‘Seminole Pointe’ earns initial OK A proposal for a development of 420 new homes and almost 90,000 feet of commercial space at a site north of the intersection of U.S. 1 and Seminole Woods Boulevard won the City Council’s initial approval at a July 19 meeting. The council voted 4-0 in favor of a rezoning required for the development to move forward. One council member, Eddie Branquinho, recused himself from the vote because of prior interactions he’d had with the developer. The proposed development had also earned the planning board’s unanimous support at a meeting on June 14. The homes would be “horizontal multifamily” units such as duplexes and triplexes, and the rezoning shifts the boundaries between the commercial and multifamily areas of the site, making the multifamily section bigger. The developer expects to complete the residential section of the development first, and must submit a master site plan or technical site plan to the city for approval before construction can begin.

Branquinho: Walkout a stunt Eddie Branquinho was back on the Palm Coast City Council dais the morning of July 19, saying that he’d been pulling a “stunt” for publicity when he walked out in the middle of a council workshop on July 12. “It was never my intention to leave,” he said in an interview July 19. “The only thing I did, in the middle of a workshop, I walked away in protest of what was going on. And if you think that didn’t work — your own newspaper put me first page, FlaglerLive put me right first page, the radio station, front and center ... and even the candidate forum, that came up. If you don’t think that made my point, then I don’t know what would, because that’s the whole idea behind it — bring the attention to my cause.” Branquinho had walked off the dais the previous week in the midst of a discussion about a proposed survey that would question citizens about their opinions on multifamily housing. But, speaking July 19, he said he’d considered staging such a walkout before — when the council had voted, over his objections, to increase its own salaries. “I was going to revolt a little bit against that, but you only have one chance of doing something like this, pulling a stunt like this and throwing a little hand grenade,” he said. “So I decided to do it with the so-called ‘affordable,’ non-affordable housing.” Branquinho consistently votes against apartment complexes, saying he believes people don’t want them in Palm Coast and that he

believes more apartments would lead to more crime. He was at odds with his colleagues on the council July 12 as to whether his proposed questions on multifamily housing should make up their own stand-alone survey or be rolled into a larger survey on the city’s Comprehensive Plan. Branquinho wanted a standalone survey for the multifamily housing questions. Other council members thought they should be included in the broader survey. Mayor David Alfin had been saying that there seemed to be a council consensus in favor of including the questions in the broader survey when Branquinho interjected, “I don’t belong here. I’ll rethink my future today. Because I don’t belong here. I don’t want to do this to the people of Palm Coast. I don’t belong here, and I’m going to think with my family as to what I want to do.” Then he turned to the mayor and said, “Let me think about my future, sir, and I’ll have an answer for you by the end of next week.” He added, “I’m here on the side of [the] people. And if you think anything different than what I’m thinking, then you’re not on the side of the

people, you’re on the side of something else.” Branquinho is not running for reelection, but said on July 19 that he’d regretted not running for mayor after former Mayor Melissa Holland resigned, and that he hasn’t ruled out running for mayor in the future. “Only the future will tell, but I’ll tell you one thing,” he said. “If I want to come back into office, and I don’t want to move out of my house, that’s the only job available out there, in the city — and I don’t want to use the city as a trampoline to go anywhere else.” Branquinho’s walkout prompted limited reactions from his colleagues at the time. Alfin had spoken of it only to tell City Clerk Virginia Smith to note it in the meeting record. Councilman Ed Danko, who’s clashed with Branquinho in the past, spoke briefly at the end of the July 12 workshop, calling the walkout “unfortunate” and “a bit childish.” Branquinho said he didn’t want to respond to that charge in order to keep the council going in a “more professional direction.” He said he’d gotten “an outpouring of love” after the walkout from constituents who supported it.

Palm Coast property taxes may be going up this year, even though the tax rate won’t: The City Council on July 19 voted 5-0 to set the city’s maximum millage rate at 4.6100 mills, or $4.6100 per $1,000 in taxable value. That rate is the same as this year’s current rate. But it’s also a 14.85% increase over the rolled-back rate — the rate that would bring the city the same dollar amount of tax revenue as it received this year — because inflation has pushed home values up 19.7%. The rolled-back rate would have been 4.0138 mills. The City Council can shift the maximum millage rate down before it sets a final rate for the coming year, but it can’t increase it over the rate set July 19. Councilman John Fanelli asked city staff about setting a millage rate somewhere between 4.6100 and the rollback rate — for instance, he said, something around 4.2 mills or 4.3 mills. That would be possible if the council cuts back the city’s proposed $52.7 million general fund budget, which would be 7.1% higher than this year’s budget. Councilman Ed Danko said the city needs to look for things to cut. “I’ll go ahead with this millage rate today, but I really want to urge everyone to start looking for some places to make some cuts,” Danko said, “because that’s what folks are having to do at home. ... I’ve gotten so many calls from people that just have urged me to push for the full rollback, because they’re hurting. They’re on fixed incomes, a lot of our residents, so it’s tough for everyone. It’s tough for our city. It’s tough for our residents, but I really seriously think we need to look for more cuts.”

‘I run the county’

Mullins mentions status as elected official during traffic stops

Pulled over by a state trooper who clocked his red convertible Ferrari speeding down Interstate 95 at 92 mph in a 70-mph zone, Flagler County Commissioner Joe Mullins told the trooper, “I run the county.” It was the second time in just over two weeks that Mullins, 51, mentioned his status as an elected official to state troopers who stopped him for driving about 20 mph over the limit. Stories about the traffic stops, with accompanying Florida Highway Patrol dash camera footage, were first posted by FlaglerLive.com. Asked for comment, Mullins on July 17 emailed the following statement: “I received a speeding ticket, paid my fine and completed traffic school. I never asked for any favors. I regret how I spoke to the officer. I fully support and love law enforcement and look forward to winning my upcoming election and servicing Flagler County for four more years.” JUNE 19: ‘I RUN THE COUNTY’

The June 19 incident occurred at about 8:45 a.m. near mile marker 287 in Flagler County. The trooper who pulled Mullins over that day told him that he’d usually give a warning. “Normally, I give warnings, I give breaks,” the trooper said, “but it looks like you’ve been written a warning already.” The trooper was telling Mullins that the ticket would be payable within 30 days and that there are three ways to pay when Mullins interrupted him, saying, “I run the county, so I know how it works.” “You run the county?” the trooper replied. “Yeah, I’m the chairman of the County Commission,” Mullins said. The trooper then continued explaining how Mullins could pay the ticket, saying, “I just have to explain your options. I don’t want any miscommunication.” JUNE 2: ‘I’M OVER THE STATE’

The previous stop had occurred at 7:47 p.m. June 2 on Interstate 4 in Seminole County, where two Highway Patrol vehicles stopped Mullins’ Mercedes SUV. When Mullins pulled over, he handed one trooper his County Commission business card. Video from the traffic stop recorded the two troopers speaking to each other as they walked back to their vehicles to run Mullins’ information. “He said he’s a county commis-

sioner,” one said. “Yeah, well, he’s getting a ticket,” the second trooper said. “He wasn’t stopping when he saw me,” the first replied. Part of the second trooper’s next comment was inaudible because of traffic noise. He continued, “I figured he might be one of those people who stops and then floors it to take off. ... What county?’ “Flagler, I think it was.” “Whatever — doesn’t matter.” “Thing was, there’s two vehicles on him, he didn’t even stop.” “No — he didn’t even slow down. Again, that’s why I came after you as well. And you could hear the, you could hear his exhaust ticking. His car was like really hot from going really fast.” “Yeah, that was the surprise of my life.” Mullins’ traffic citation states that he was driving 89 mph. The speed limit was 60. The troopers walked back up to Mullins’ car, and Mullins began speaking, most of his words drowned out by traffic noise in the dash camera video. At one point, a trooper said, “Are you ready to leave, sir? Are you ready to leave?” Mullins kept talking. The trooper told him that if he didn’t leave, he’d be getting another ticket. “If you get out of this car, you’re going to jail,” the trooper told him. “... Stay in the car. Stay calm. ... You’re aware this is all being audio and video recorded, right?” “The way you drove is, also,” Mullins said. “Absolutely,” the trooper said. “And I’m telling you, as an elected official ... I’m over the state, I’m telling you,” Mullins said. “You’re over the state?” the trooper replied. “You can record that all you want. That was very dangerous, what you did,” Mullins said, speaking of the way one of the troopers had pulled beside him on the shoulder of the road before backing up behind him. “Alright, are you ready to leave?” one of the troopers said. Mullins pulled away. ‘I AM ASKING FOR LENIENCE’

In addition to the stops in Flagler County and Seminole County this year, Mullins has also been cited for speeding in Seminole County (in 2021, for driving 85 mph in a 65-mph zone), in Duval County (2018, 64 mph in a 55-mph zone), St. Johns County (2016, 65 in a 55-mph zone) and Nassau County (2015, 79 mph in a 70-mph zone).

After the stops in Flagler County and Seminole County this year, Mullins wrote letters to the judge in each case asking that points not be assessed on his license. “I lost track of time and while taking calls and dealing with traffic knowing I was behind schedule, I was not paying attention to my speed nor the limit,” he wrote to the judge in the Flagler case.

He wrote a similar letter in the June 2 Seminole County case. In both letters, he wrote: “I am asking for lenience as I am gladly to pay in full the amount owed but would like the assessed points and my record not to be noted if possible.” After the 2016 stop in St. Johns County, which occurred before he became a commissioner, Mullins did not pay the fine on time, and sought Flagler County Clerk of Court Tom Bexley’s assistance to avoid a license suspension. Bexley forwarded the St. Johns County Clerk of Court’s Office a letter by Mullins in which Mullins asked that the court withhold adjudication and not assess points on his license. According to reporting by FlaglerLive, Mullins had also asked for Sheriff Rick Staly’s intervention after receiving the 2016 ticket, but was rebuffed. The footage and reports of Mullins’ June 2022 traffic stops are seeing wide circulation — appearing in publications as far away as the U.K.based Daily Mail, as well as national and local U.S. papers — less than two months from the Aug. 23 primary elections. Mullins is being challenged in the District 4 Republican primary by Leann Pennington. The winner of the primary will face NPA candidate Jane Gentile-Youd in the general election. On July 9, Mullins posted photos to his campaign Facebook page, showing his campaign signs in Palm Coast yards. “A great day knocking on doors and dropping yard signs in the F-section!” the text of the post said. As of the morning of July 17, there were 420 comments on that post. Almost all were from people denouncing or mocking Mullins’ behavior during his recent traffic stops. BRIEFS DeSantis focuses school board races Emphasizing that school board elections have a “significant impact” on families, Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday, July 15, focused on his support for candidates who align with his education agenda as he helped kick off an event held by the conservative group Moms for Liberty. Flagler School Board candidates Jill Woolbright and Christy Chong were among DeSantis’ statewide endorsements. Moms For Liberty, founded by two former Florida school board members, gained prominence by railing against school board policies such as mask requirements during the pandemic. It drew about 500 people from across the country to an inaugural “summit” over the weekend. The governor’s campaign in June launched an online questionnaire designed to gauge school board candidates’ alignment with his educational priorities as part of an effort to build a roster of candidates for potential endorsements. “We have drawn a very clear line in the sand that says our school system is for educating kids, not indoctrinating them,” DeSantis said, eliciting applause. Florida Democratic Chairman Manny Diaz and other party officials held a news conference to respond to DeSantis’ remarks, blasting the governor’s efforts to shape the makeup of school boards. “It isn’t about the kids. It’s about an obsession with power. And the clearest example of that … is the fact that they are actually putting up Republicans to go against Republicans. They’re not just challenging Democrats. If there’s a Republican that they don’t like, like in Miami for example, they are actually finding candidates to go against their own people,” Diaz said.

State seeks to curb derelict vessels Owners of boats at risk of becoming derelict would be able to rid themselves of the vessels at no cost under a state program. State lawmakers this year increased funding for the removal of derelict vessels from $3.5 million to $8.2 million, after earlier giving law enforcement more authority to address at-risk vessels that have no effective means of propulsion and have taken on water or are on the verge of becoming unanchored. The commission also anticipates receiving money through the American Rescue Plan Act stimulus law to help with removing derelict vessels. The Vessel Turn-In Program would be open to people who in the past 18 months received notices three times for at-risk conditions. The people couldn’t owe money on the boats. For participants in the program, the commission will declare vessels a public nuisance.. The commission is currently handling 730 derelict-vessel cases.

Experts condemn state’s plan to ban Medicaid coverage for transgender care National medical and legal researchers have issued a report condemning Florida health officials’ plan to block Medicaid coverage for genderdysphoria treatments, saying the move lacks “any persuasive scientific or medical justification.” The state Agency for Health Care Administration in June rolled out a proposed rule that would prevent Medicaid reimbursements for treatments such as puberty-blocking medication and hormone therapy for transgender people, justifying the proposed rule with a report. Seven scientists and a Yale law professor have countered with a report that said the state study’s “conclusions are incorrect and scientifically unfounded.” The critical report was released by Yale School of Medicine researchers and professors at other universities. The state of Florida’s report “looks very scientific on its face,” Yale law professor Anne Alstott told The News Service of Florida. “But if you dig in and really look at their sources, an unbelievable amount of their sourcing is to opinion pieces, letters to the editor. They cited a student blog and one of the quote-unquote experts that they hired is a dentist,” said Alstott, one of the authors of the report criticizing the state’s proposed rule.

The Flagler Youth Orchestra strings program received its funding for an 18th season. And new student dress codes for elementary and secondary students were approved. A month ago, both of these Flagler County School Board items seemed cut and dried. But at the July 19 board meeting, the FYO funding seemed controversial, yet it really wasn’t. And the dress code had been discussed, workshopped and advertised for nearly a year, only to be

passed under an air of uncertainty. The board passed the dress codes it had advertised over a month ago with one exception. Graphic art on shirts will be allowed for elementary school students, but not for middle and high school students. The board approved the secondary school dress code it had recommended at its June 9 meeting by a 3-2 vote. That came after it had defeated the same motion minutes earlier. With 78 comments on the school district’s “Let’s Talk” webpage recommending graphic tees, the board discussed deleting General Rule 3 that states: “No garments shall have graphics, slogans or statements,” for secondary students. That change would have been coupled with banning graphics along with insignias

and logos related to “drugs, alcohol, violence, gangs, weapons, (and) sexually suggestive or offensive topics deemed inappropriate by administration.” Board member Jill Woolbright said the deans, who enforce the dress code, would be forced to decide what’s inappropriate. She made a motion to keep the secondary school dress code as presented, with no graphics allowed. Board Chair Trevor Tucker, who was not in favor of changing the dress code used this past school year, voted against the motion, along with Colleen Conklin and Janet McDonald. After further discussion and another failed motion, McDonald suggested giving the dress code as presented a year to see how the deans feel about enforcement. With McDonald changing her vote, the motion passed. With elementary school parents generally in favor of T-shirts with cartoon designs, the board voted unanimously to delete General Rule 3, allowing graphics. The board also passed the elementary and secondary Code of Student Conduct. The meeting opened with passionate pleas for the board to approve $70,000 in funding for the FYO strings program. That would cover most of the $87,585 needed to pay the salaries of program director Cheryl Tristam and six music instructors. Nineteen people spoke on behalf of the program. Among them were current and former students in the program, parents, music instructors and Flagler County Tax Collector Suzanne Johnston, who said there are tip jars for the FYO on the counter

at the Tax Collector’s Office. At the July 5 School Board workshop, Tristam estimated that 3,000 to 3,500 students participated in the program during the past 17 years. The show of support was organized after McDonald, during a previous workshop, sounded like she was not in favor of funding the after-school program for another year. At the workshop, McDonald said, “My real concern is we don’t have equity in the budget with this. I don’t know any other outside program that gets special compensation in not only salaries and transportation but the use of facilities at no cost. … Our kids (during the school day) do not get music all the time, and do not get movement all the time and art all the time. They have to separate and take turns having that exposure. So, if we can’t support access during our day program, how can we say we can invest in this over and over?” But the funding passed with the consent agenda, 5-0, and McDonald said her workshop comments were misconstrued on social media. “I was not intending anything to happen to the Flagler Youth Orchestra,” she said. “I’ve supported (the FYO) every year.” She said she would like to see more opportunities for students to get music and art education during the school day. “A lot of kids don’t have these advantages. A lot of kids don’t have the spark in their lives.” Woolbright, who had said at the workshop, “Just because we’ve done something for 17 years, doesn’t mean we don’t change,” said at the business meeting that she was very thankful to hear the testimony of the FYO supporters. “I’m glad you came out tonight. I’m sorry you felt you had to,” she said. “I get comments about disparity of how we fund after-school programs, (but) this board member was never going to defund.” Conklin and Cheryl Massaro suggested the board come up with a multi-year agreement next year, so they don’t have to debate the issue again.

Construction workers unearthed a human bone while building an emergency exit for the Toscana development off Old Kings Road the afternoon of July 18. The bone was sent to the University of Central Florida’s anthropology department for testing, which confirmed that it’s human. It’s not an archeological find, Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly said. “At this point, we don’t know if it’s a homicide, if it’s a suicide; it could be a missing person, it could be a homeless person,” Staly said on Tuesday, July 19. Flagler County Sheriff’s Office detectives, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Medical Examiner’s Office all responded. Detectives were still on site as of the afternoon of July 19, and may be for days. “It’s a very time-consuming, labor-intensive process to see if there are other human bones or remains that can be located,” Staly said. Detectives are sifting though mounds of dirt, and will be trying to identify the person who died. It wasn’t clear if the person had died in the location where workers found the bones, or if the construction process might have moved them, Staly said. Workers recently shifted large amounts of dirt to build a retention pond and install utilities. The body was found in an area that was recently, near New Leatherwood Drive at the development’s southern end. SUSPECT TELLS DEPUTY TO TURN OFF SPOTLIGHT 12:12 a.m. — Interstate 4 at mile marker 127, Daytona Beach Fleeing and eluding. A deputy was driving east in the middle lane of I-4 when a car sped past in the right lane. The deputy paced the car at 120 mph, then turned on lights and siren for a traffic stop. The car pulled over, but, as the deputy walked toward the car, the 20-year-old driver “stuck his entire head out the window and looked back” at the deputy, and told the deputy to turn off his spotlight, according to the deputy’s report. The deputy explained that the light was for safety. The driver revved the car and fled, but deputies had his tag number. Police officers arrested the driver in his Ormond Beach home.

A 48-year-old pastor molested a 15-year-old boy in the back seat of a car at the Matanzas Woods Golf Course after arranging a meeting with the teen through the gay dating app Grindr, according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office report. The pastor, Alphonso Joseph, describes himself as “Overseer Alphonso Joseph” on his Facebook page, which features photos of him in clerical robes. FCSO deputies arrested Joseph after finding him and the boy in a car at the golf course at 10:25 p.m., according to Joseph’s arrest report. The deputies had been responding to a noise complaint about loud music at the golf course when they came across Joseph’s Camry. When a deputy approached and shined a flashlight at it, deputies saw that the car was shaking. They found Joseph and the boy in the backseat, pulling up their pants, according to the report. Deputies spoke to the two separately, and discovered that the teen was 15. The teen said that he’d met Joseph on Grindr and that Joseph had performed a sex act on him in the car. Joseph at first said the two had been “just chillin’” in the car and that he’d taken off his shirt because it was hot out. But he later admitted to performing a sex act on the boy, telling deputies that the 15-year-old had said that he was 18. Deputies arrested Joseph. He is charged with lewd and lascivious battery on a victim 12-16 years of old.

‘Operation Meth Side Story’ busts 18 suspects Deputies raided suspected drug dealers’ homes the morning of July 14, arresting 13 people and seizing large amounts of fentanyl in western Flagler County after a 2.5-month investigation. They arrested one other suspect later in the day and one the next day and have warrants for three more. Other suspects were arrested earlier in the investigation, or were already in jail on unrelated offenses and now face additional charges, , according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office news release. The investigation — which the Sheriff’s Office dubbed “Operation Meth Side Story,” focused on drug dealing in Bunnell and the Mondex area. The FCSO’s Special Investigations Unit and the P.A.C.E. Unit conducted the arrest sweep. They seized $31,000 cash and enough fentanyl to potentially kill more than 98,000 people, given fentanyl’s estimated lethal dose of 2 milligrams. They also found heroin, cocaine, THC oil, methamphetamine, and cannabis. “These drug dealers are now finding out what happens to poison peddlers in Flagler County,” Sheriff Rick Staly said, according to the news release. “These 18 poison peddlers have faced more than 159 felony charges combined over the course of their criminal life. These poison peddlers have been convicted 51 times. If you are a drug dealer in Flagler County and we didn’t get you this time you, better watch over your shoulder as we are coming for you next.” Suspects range in age from 21 to 66 and have 51 previous convictions between them. One of them, Twain Slater, has been charged with 20 felonies and 19 misdemeanors in Flagler County alone, mainly for narcotic-related arrests. The following suspects are still wanted: John Nicolicchia Jr., Sale of Methamphetamine Adam Giddens, Sale of Fentanyl Christopher Smith, Sale of

Cocaine and Unlawful Use of a Two-Way Communication Device. “As a result of the hard work of our Special Investigations Unit, this operation led to getting these drug dealers arrested for poison peddling in our community, and seizing deadly drugs. Hopefully, Operation Meth Side Story will save some lives,” Staly said. “If we are still looking for you, I suggest you turn yourself in, as it’s only a matter of time before we find you and take you to the Green Roof Inn.” The FCSO is asking for tips about the whereabouts of the three remaining suspects, John Nicolicchia Jr., Adam Giddens and Christopher Smith. FCSO places third in policing challenge The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office’s Motor and Traffic Unit has placed third out of 34 agencies in the Florida Law Enforcement Traffic Safety Challenge. FCSO Community Policing Division Chief Jon Welker, CPD Commander of Special Operations Scott Vedder, CPD Sgt. Adam Biss and Sgt. Chris Ragazzo attended the recognition event last week in Orlando, and Sheriff Rick Staly attended the award presentation to accept the award on behalf of the FCSO, according to an FCSO news release. “Being invited to this training was a great opportunity to learn and interact with other traffic units, and placing third in the state of Florida is a great honor,” Vedder said, according to the news release. The FCSO provides FLETSC with statistics for policies, participation initiatives, enforcement and traffic safety effectiveness, and was nominated for its collaborative efforts. The annual challenge is an effort of the Florida Law Enforcement Liaison Program, sponsored by the Florida Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The FLETSC paid for the FCSO to attend the training.

Chelsea Hawk, a longtime Palm Coast resident and political activist for progressive causes and candidates, died July 18 after she was injured in a July 17 car crash on Interstate 95 in Volusia County. One of her three children also died. Hawk, 39, was moving to Daytona Beach with her partner, Jared Upshaw, and their

three children when the crash occurred. Upshaw, 46, was driving south in the family’s minivan near mile marker 268 and tried to exit onto State Road 400, but lost control of the vehicle while making the sharp turn, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. The van left the roadway, struck the sign for mile marker

268, continued onto the grass and plunged into a retention pond, sinking into about 7 or 8 feet of water, according to the report. Hawk, Upshaw and their 13-year-old daughter were taken to Halifax Medical Center, with Hawk in critical condition and Upshaw in serious condition. The 13-year-old girl was treated for minor injuries and discharged. The couple’s 12-year-old son and 10-year old son were both airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital. The 12-year-old boy was in critical condition and later died, while the younger son is stable, according to the report.

Sea turtles are nesting in unusually high numbers in both Volusia County and Flagler County. In Volusia County, mother sea turtles have deposited 1,106 nests — a record high, according to a news release from Volusia County’s public information office. Of those nests, almost half are in New Smyrna Beach. Volusia has historically seen about 500 nests from May 1 to Oct. 1, but had 984 in 2019, 902 in 2020 and 780 in 2021, according to the news release. In Flagler County, volunteers had recorded 767 nests as of July 13 — about double the typical number, according to a post on the Flagler Turtle

Beachgoers can help make the hatchlings’ journey to the ocean less dangerous, Volusia County Protected Species Manager Jennifer Winters said. “We ask beachgoers to make sure the beach is dark, clean and flat at night so hatchlings can find their way offshore to the floating sargassum seaweed where they will spend the first portion of their lives,” Winters said, according to the news release. With the coming of summer thunderstorms, hatchlings will face “washback season” as the storms sweep them to shore with floating seaweed. Lacking the energy to return to the water, washbacks stranded on the beach may be eaten by predators or die from dehydration, according to the news release. They’re hard to spot in the seaweed, Winters said.

“If you find a washback or hatchling on the beach that is in imminent danger, do not put it back in the ocean,” Winters said, according to the news release. “Instead, contact Beach Safety for further instruction. These animals are often exhausted and can barely lift their heads to breathe. Holding them in water or putting them in the ocean can be fatal.” Here’s what to do if you find a washback turtle, according to the Volusia news release: Ensure it’s out of harm’s way. Do not take it home. Provide shade over the turtle and determine your location. The address, building name, street name or GPS location are most helpful. Immediately notify Beach Safety at 386-239-6414. Between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., call the Volusia Sheriff’s Office at 386-248-1777, Ext. 6.

at the City Council meetings you've seen, there's a multifamily rezoning available that the city has to vote on, and tens of people, sometimes, will come up and say, "Please do not rezone this to multifamily, because I live right by there, and I do not want multifamily right next to me." You're on the City Council. The city staff is telling you this is all legal; you have no justification legally to deny it, but you know that some of these people are saying, "We do not want this next to us." What do you do? ALAN LOWE: First let me go back

to the beginning of the question, then I will answer your second. I think the government's role is to smartly manage development — and within existing zoning. I'm not a big proponent of rezoning, say, commercial into residential. We just discussed, a minute ago, about future companies coming here, and do we present affordable housing for those workers? It's difficult to have companies coming here if we rezone all of the commercial property into residential property — be it multifamily or whatever type. So I think there needs to be a balance drawn somewhere, and I think economic development — we need to promote a positive business atmosphere so that we know what businesses might come here, so that we can then plan for the affordable housing. ... One thing that we do have in our favor coming up is the property west of Route 1. That property ... it's not currently under a master plan, and there's no reason why we couldn't take specific areas

out there and rezone it for affordable housing. ... Maybe we can have zoned areas that won't affect existing neighborhoods, where we can have a one-car garage and a smaller home that reduces the price enough to make it attainable. To your question, if it's legal and there's no way around something, I would defer to the to the ... city attorney, that they can give us direction on that. And if there's no way around it, there's no way around it; I'd rather the city not be sued. DAVID AYRES: Sims ... if the

developer would come to you, and you're on the City Council, and say, "Hey, I want to start a tiny house community out west, where it is affordable." ... Maybe somewhere between tiny and mid-size, like cottages that don't have to have two-car garages and 100-foot lot lines and things like that — would you as a councilman ... be open to listen to developers come forth with communities that don't look anything like Palm Coast right now? SIMS JONES: I would be for it.

Because any area, if you just lock yourself in one type of housing or the way the area looks, you are taking away from that area. So I would be open to other sizes of buildings, multi-floors or multi-apartments, because there are people who don't want a house. There are people who don't want the responsibility of mowing a lawn and whatever; they just want something that they can go to, live in and be happy with. So we have to look at those people also, the same as we look at everybody else. So I would be for it, yes, and then if in another area, in one of these types of housing, there are people who are willing to move in, I would be all for it.

And we know from a recent city presentation that the city needs to spend a lot more money to repave its roads than it's currently doing. ... There's pressure to give raises to city employees to keep the staff together. Do you foresee having to raise taxes in the city? And, if not, then what would you think we can get more efficient on, or what part of the budget would you cut?

But rather, when the government has the ability to grant zoning variances and dedicate certain land to certain projects, we have to keep in mind what is coming to Palm Coast. For instance: hospitals, distribution centers. If those types of things are coming, and we know that ground is going to be broken, say, in three years, we have to plan for that as far as housing is concerned. Our workforce deserves to live and play in Palm Coast. There's no doubt about it. What we have to make sure is that we're abiding by the Comprehensive Plan that's been put in place, we're abiding by the Strategic Action Plan that has a very good vision for our city, and we are providing proper housing — not overdevelopment, but the proper amount of housing based on the workforce that's going to be needed to run those companies and those facilities. And when we engage in that, that's called "smart growth."

have to make sure that our Sheriff's Department, Fire Department, paramedics, are fully funded, because that is the safety net that we have as a city. So, I'm aware that Sheriff Staly currently is looking for, I believe, it's five additional deputies. With the population increases we

have coming, I see no reason to not look for a way to supply the funding for those five additional deputies. We have to stay ahead of the curve of population. If we fall back, it's a fix-after-failure situation, and it's going to cost far more.... We have a huge road maintenance shortfall that needs to be made up somewhere. We're going to have to take some hard stances on different issues, and we may have to make some cuts in different ways — perhaps the pickleball court amenity, like I've talked about, although now it doesn't come out of the general fund. But issues that do affect the general fund, we might have to cut back on those for a short term in order to supply road maintenance repair. THERESA CARLI PONTIERI:

... In the current budget workshop that was just this week, the Flagler County Sheriff's Office has asked for five more deputies. Also, the Fire Department has asked for two more

firefighter-EMTs, and we're going to need an apparatus, because you have to order those two years out in order to get them when you need them. So we do have to be proactive in how we're spending money. I'm a fiscal conservative. I want to scrutinize our budget and look at how we can pinch every single penny within the confines of the money that's being brought in. I will do everything in my power to not raise taxes. Furthermore, I think if we can cut some red tape and some bureaucracy, that's where we can save some money. There's way too many industries and businesses that are going to Bunnell to open, rather than opening right here in Palm Coast, because we've got a little too much red tape, and that costs money: Red tape costs money. So that's definitely a way that we can cut taxes. SIMS JONES: I wouldn't raise any

My name is Alan Lowe, and I'm a 39-year resident of Palm Coast. I moved here in 1983 to go to work for my dad. Of those 39 years, I have been a selfemployed local business owner for 35 of them, and I have lived in District 2 not for a month, not for a year, not for five years, but 33 years in the district that I intend to represent. I've had public meetings at my home. I've rented rooms here at City Hall, the Community Center and had public meetings here. So I know very much what is wanted and what the direction of our city that you people would like to go. I will continue to have meetings, public meetings, town halls, whatever you would like to call them after I'm elected to City Council. I am an outside-of-the-box thinker. I have two patents to my name — one of them in mechanics, one of them in marine biology. I've had a writeup in National Geographic magazine. So, well rounded on all the various subjects that are pertinent to our city. So I look forward to your vote. My name is Sims Jones, and I'm a retired New York City firefighter. I'm the pastor of God's Love Ministry, and I've been living here in Palm Coast since 2006, and I'm involved in a lot of things in the community. I'm on a number of different boards. I work with senior citizens, I work with youth, and I'm just an allaround guy. So I'm just here to let you know that I'm here for each and every one of you. I'm not a big talker, because I save that for when I'm preaching on Sunday. So I don't want to do a sermon tonight. So I just wanted to say thank you for your vote ahead of time. I'm going to do the greatest job for you, and I'm going to make you all proud that you elected me your City Council member. ...I have always served people — as a firefighter, as a pastor, I listen. And one of the number one things people want other people to do is listen to their problems, help them figure a way out of it, help them get through it. And that’s what I bring to the City Council: I bring back the fact that you are important, and I’m going to make sure what you feel, what you think, how you feel things should be done is going to be heard. I’ve heard too many times when people have gone before a City Council meeting, and it was like they were just overlooked, things were said and then were just discarded. I’m not going to be that way. I’m going to actually listen to you. I’m going to hear you, and then I’m going to do what you would have me do. When you elect me, you’re not electing me for me, you’re elected me for you. So what I bring, is I bring you everything that you want, everything that you feel, how you want, how you feel the city should be. That’s what I’m going to bring to the City Council for you. I am your mouthpiece. I am a your liaison. I am the person that you called to be here to speak up for you. It’s not about me. It’s all about you.

My name is Theresa Carli Pontieri. I am an attorney of almost seven years, very happily and luckily married to my firefighter husband who was, at first, reluctantly supportive of me getting into politics, but he's come around — so, thankful for that. I am so humbled and honored to be able to have the opportunity to represent every single one of you in what I think is absolutely the best city, in the best state, with the best governor, in the best country in the world. It's already been such an amazing experience going door to door, talking to so many people, figuring out what's really on your minds and what you really talk about on your couches and around the dining room table. And I look forward to getting to know every single one of you and representing those interests as we move forward. ... Every day, all day long, what I do is fight for other people — their legal rights, their goals. As an attorney, that is literally what I do, all day every day. I get to walk into courtrooms and fight for what other people are legally entitled to. I’m used to that. And I’m also used to having to engage in compromise, having to read Florida statutes, municipal codes, contracts. That is in my blood at this point, and I thoroughly enjoy it. So, I come with a skill set and an experience that other people currently actually on the dais don’t have and that my opponents don’t have. And I don’t say that to prop myself up unfairly; that is absolutely the truth, and it’s something that is desperately needed, because that’s what we do every week when we’re on the dais. ... And Mr. Lowe is absolutely right: We are growing, and we have to think about the future. And in doing that, it takes anticipation. It takes knowing what statutes and codes and contracts, the repercussions and the results of those are not going to be just in the moment, but what is going to happen in the future, and to anticipate those possible changes. So that is a skill set and experience that I can bring and use for your benefit.

BRIAN MCMILLAN: I’d like to hear ... something specific about your background and your experience that may have some sway on how you would handle yourself on the City Council or how you would be a good representative. ALAN LOWE: ... I have seen Palm Coast go from, I think it was about 3,500 to 5,000 population when I moved here, now we’re pressing 100,000. I know people are complaining about different things, and I’ve seen it all the way through. So what I bring to City Council is a knowledge of the past, an understanding of the present and a view towards the future, and that future would be what you want. I don’t think there’s sufficient representation right now at City Hall. ... I’ve stood at the podium I don’t know how many times over the last few years. I’ve been to the majority of City Council meetings, I know what’s going on there, and I have actually had three wins now at City Council as a concerned citizen. DAVID AYRES: Alan Lowe ... Being here for so long, how is that an advantage? ALAN LOWE: It gives me the advantage because I understand the direction of the city, and I understand the direction that the people out here want the city to go. ... I understand the direction that the city should go. I've seen before the overpass of 95 was here, and the benefit that it brought. I was here before Walmart, all those things were here, and I saw the benefit that they brought. It gives me the ability to see when something comes in, or when an idea is brought forward for something, looking back in history, the benefit that it would bring or the issues that it would bring.

DAVID AYRES: You’ve got lots of friends, great pastor, you’ve touched a lot of lives. But being a City Councilman can be a pretty nasty job, and you’ve seen some pretty nasty situations that probably haven’t happened in your church, would that be truthful to say? SIMS JONES: I would say no, because these happened in the church just like they happen out here in the real world. Things do happen in the church. But... you deal with situations. ... And I’ve always been around looking at the whole situation. So, whatever is coming up, whatever somebody’s going through, I look at that whole situation, and then I deal with it accordingly. Everything is looked at individually. I don’t put things into a bucket or paint everything with the same brush; I have to look at it individually. This way, with me on the City Council, whatever comes before the City Council, I’m going to make sure I look at every aspect around it and deal with it the best way we can for the citizens of Palm Coast.

DAVID AYRES: Theresa, I heard you say that you’re an attorney; you go into a courtroom, you fight for people’s rights. But as a City Council person, you’re kind of more of the judge. ... How will that change the way you approach things, from being an attorney, maybe, on the other side? THERESA CARLI PONTIERI: I’m going to respectfully disagree with you. I think that I am an attorney advocating and fighting for my district, and everybody that is up there has a district they’re representing, and I represent all of Palm Coast, but I have to keep a special frame of mind for my specific district; I’m being elected to represent what they need and what they want. ... But at the end of the day, whatever decision I make, I will be very transparent with our citizens and explain exactly why that decision was made.

Closing remarks BRIAN MCMILLAN: If you had to

give one last pitch, why should we vote for you? ALAN LOWE: ... As a concerned

citizen, as I mentioned earlier, I'm also a tenacious fighter, and I have fought at the podium in City Hall, time and time and time again, dozens of times, for the citizens of Palm Coast. I don't think we need increased taxes to put a burden on fixedincome people when we have this hyperinflation going on. You know, people are happy that gas prices are dropping below five bucks in some areas — what kind of insanity is that? Not too long ago, it was below two bucks. So I have stood at the podium as a concerned citizen, I have made three wins that are identified as a concerned citizen, and I have brought your voice to the podium in City Hall. And when you vote me in, I will be your voice in City Hall. Please vote Alan Lowe.

THERESA CARLI PONTIERI:

Quickly, I just want to touch on the commercial atmosphere that we currently live in, because I agree that we need some bigger businesses here. But anybody who has worked or been a developer or a builder, the number one thing you look at — how many roofs are going to shop in my business? So we have to really look at the Comprehensive Plan, we have to look at our Strategic Action Plan, and most importantly, the city has to communicate to the citizens what that plan is. And that is something that I really, really want to improve on. I want to have town halls, I want to have the opportunity for citizens to ask these types of questions and to engage. Because if you look at the Comprehensive Plan, there is a plan to bring in some of these high-level commercial businesses, but you can't get them in the door to spend money in our city if we don't have the people for that ROI, for that return on investment, to be there.

You can't be in a silo. This takes a full, comprehensive approach. It takes looking at things from the forest and not getting lost in the trees, and we really need somebody with that type of outlook, that type of perspective, and that type of business mind — and keeping in mind also what's best for the citizens, keeping in mind all of these things and looking at this as a comprehensive forest and not being lost in the trees. Thank you so much for putting this on, and also thank you all for being here. I just want to leave you with this: I'm a fighter. I've always been a hard worker. I always say I'm never the smartest person in the room on at least one subject, but I don't get out-worked. I will work hard for you, I will be prepared for City Council meetings, I will read the literature that's put in front of me. I won't make decisions based on emotion. I will make them based on fact — fact-based, researched decisions that benefit our community.

SIMS JONES: Well, I'm just going

to say that I'm you — I am you. You elect me, you have a voice. You elect me, and I will do the very best I can for you. I can't say that enough, because I believe the greatest thing in Palm Coast is the people of Palm Coast. And I think that the people of Palm Coast have not been represented the right way by the City Council. So I want to be that representation on the City Council for you, so that you no longer will feel that you're not being represented, you no longer feel that you don't have a voice, you no longer feel that how you feel things aren't getting done. Because with me on the City Council, you will get what you want done, because I will not be working for me, I will be working for you — plain and simple. I'm all about you: For the people, by the people and of the people.

LETTERS Mullins abused power Dear Editor: With both amusement and disgust, I watched a Florida Highway Patrol dash cam video of Commissioner Joe Mullins being pulled over for going 92 mph in his red Ferrari. Mullins actually brazenly told the patrolman, “I run the county,” while flashing his commissioner business card, which he seemingly believed

was some sort of “get out of jail free” card. That is a clear and classic example of abuse of position and a wrong-headed sense of entitlement. That was the disturbing part of the video. This is money going directly to the school district, to be spent at their discretion. just spent over a year being extremely vocal in opposing a hefty increase in impact fees for the school district. Let me explain the difference. Impact fees are imposed on new construction across the board. There are impact fees for the fire departments, parks, roads, utilities and schools. These fees have distinct designations for these funds: expansion. Hence why the fees are connected to new construction. In 2021, the Flagler County School Board voted to double the school impact fees. There were increases across the board, none of which we opposed, including an increase for the schools. We opposed the 100% increase, but stated at the start that we’d be in agreement with a 50% increase. Studies over the past decade have shown a flatline in student population. The one thing that school impact fees can be used for is growth, or, as we like to refer to it, butts in seats. They can buy land on which to build schools, they can build a school, they can expand an

existing school. Although we continue to see a large increase in the number of homes built in Flagler County, those increases are not leading toward an increase in students. I work for a home builder, and in the 30 contracts for new homes we have signed in the last two years, only one of my clients has schoolaged children — and they’re homeschooled. And if we’re dead wrong, and out of nowhere, the increase occurs in the next several years — we did approve a 51% increase, and the School Board has $30 million sitting in an impact fee fund and over $13 million in real estate. I imagine you can see why we opposed a 100% fee increase. All that said, let’s talk about the half-penny sales tax that’s up for reelection. This money is up for grabs. That is incredibly rare when it comes to money given to schools. There is almost always a designation (like impact fees) on where the money can be spent. Sometimes it’s technology, teacher salaries or a specific program. But this money? This can go towards crayons and glue or new carpet or desks or bonuses or new security measures or additional SROs or technology. Four years ago, when this sales tax came up, the education community pushed for it with a goal of getting our county to a one-to-one technology status. That means that every single one of our students from grade three and up has their own tablet or laptop. Do you know what a big deal that is? We were pioneers in this program, and have seen the success of our students through it. Supporting this halfpenny sales tax will continue this program, and, according to the plan released from Superintendent Cathy Mittelstadt, will also go towards other technology, safety, buses, renovations and energy efficiency upgrades. As a reminder, the impact fee can affect none of the above items. As Flagler County Commissioner Joe Mullins stated, “It’s in the public’s hands.” So even if you disagreed with our fight against the 100% increase in school impact fees, this decision is yours. The public alone has the deciding vote on this. Not the Home Builders Association, not the county commissioners, not the School Board. They’re asking you, and I’m suggesting you get out and vote to support it. I promise you will not miss it. The students are our future. I am the product of the Flagler County School District, the daughter of a teacher with 30-plus years in Flagler, and the mother of a student currently enrolled in the district. I know firsthand what undesignated money can do for a school system. So, on behalf of the Flagler County Home Builders Association, and of my dad and my children, I urge you to support the half penny sales tax which will appear on your ballot in November. Water ways Smithsonian exhibition Water/ Ways comes to African American Museum DANNY BROADHURST CONTRIBUTING WRITER

“It is a community event and is intended to bring people out in our community, and hopefully we get people out of town as well,” said Meshella Woods, curator for the AACS.

The African American Museum and Cultural Society of Florida is hosting Water/Ways, a traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum on Main Street program, though Sept. 3. The exhibition opened July 9 with a ribbon cutting ceremony at the AACS Cultural Center Founders Gallery and is presented in partnership with Florida Humanities. The Smithsonian exhibition highlights the significance of water as an environmental necessity and an important cultural element, according to the news release. “Water is an integral part of everything. It flows through all that we do,” said Sybil Dodson-Lucas, AACS board member and cultural director. “Bringing this exhibit, I think it is going to put a keener focus on what we all have, but what we may not all appreciate.” Art by local professional artists is included with the exhibition, which also showcases images from the Flagler Beach Photography Club and art by students from Matanzas High School. Matanzas’ history, science, English and art classes have also created projects for display. “There are a lot of pieces that go with this,” said AACS Curator Lauren LaBeur, of the St. Johns River Water Management District, shows off an interactive display on water use and pollution, while volunteer Sophia Dempsey assists.

The 1970 graduating class from Bunnell High School held its 52nd reunion and a turning-70 big birthday bash at the Hilton Garden Inn on Saturday, July 9. Of the 52 members of the graduating class, 19 attended the event, according to a news release. The class was the final graduating class to attend the old Bunnell High School building: It caught fire a few weeks after the 1970 graduation, and students shifted to Carver High School until Flagler Palm Coast High School was constructed. “We all enjoyed seeing one another again, some after 52 years, and shared many wonderful memories,” Janet Newton, who organized the event, wrote in the news release.

The Museum of Arts and Sciences has appointed Tabitha Schmidt as its next executive director, succeeding Interim Executive Director Maria Hane and former Executive Director Andrew Sandall. “After a nationwide search we have unanimously selected Tabitha Schmidt as our choice for the next Executive Director of the Museum of Arts and Sciences,” said Katherine Hurst Miller, president of the MOAS board of trustees president. Schmidt will start her duties in early September 2022. She comes to MOAS after serving as the CEO of the Powell Gardens, Kansas City’s botanical garden, for the past six years. Vince Carter sat at a table in the lobby of the Vince Carter Athletic Center at Mainland High School and signed autographs for one of the age groups at the Vince Carter Youth Basketball Academy. After everyone in the group received an autograph — some on their camp T-shirts — he accompanied them outside, where a camp photographer was waiting to take a picture of the former NBA player with the group of kids. When they were done, another group filed out of the gym for autographs and a photo with the man who acquired the nicknames “Vansanity,” and “Air Canada” early in his 22-year pro basketball career. Carter has hosted the camp since he entered the NBA

in 1998. Because of COVID restrictions, it was canceled the past two years. This year, being the first year back, the camp, which had always been a full week, was abbreviated to three days. “Since we missed two years, we knew we wouldn’t get as many campers,” said Carter’s mother, Michelle Carter, who is the executive director of Vince Carter’s Embassy of Hope Foundation. “I was thinking 60 or 70.” Instead, 124 kids between the ages of 7 and 17 participated in the camp held July 15-17. There were 24 campers from Ormond Beach, eight from Palm Coast and two from Bunnell. Campers also traveled from Chile, Nova Scotia, Arizona, Colorado, Texas, Mississippi, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and towns and cities throughout Florida. Many campers return year after year. Triston Smelt, 16, of New Smyrna Beach, participated for the fifth time. Abby Steele, 28, of Huntington, West Virginia, was a camper from age 7 to 17, and then began coaching at the camp at 18. “I’ve been coaching here ever since,” said Steele, who is an athletic trainer. After the campers got their autograph and their photo taken with Carter, Mainland’s most famous alumnus addressed the entire group. Every dream, he told them, takes hard work to fulfill. “It’s easy to say you want to be a professional person. I want the kids to understand that they have to give that effort to make it,” Carter said. Carter was an immense talent when he entered the NBA — one of the best dunkers and high flyers in league history — but it was hard work that kept him in the league longer than anybody else. He was 43 when he retired in 2020.

“It’s just about willingness and drive. I was still motivated to play regardless of my age. It was what I wanted to do, what I loved to do,” he said. “That’s why I told these kids, ‘Giving your all will take you a long way,’ because I’m living proof of that.” If he was step slower than he was in his prime, he made up for it by being a good influence on his teammates, he said. BUSIER THAN EVER

When he was a rookie, he never thought he’d play for so long. “For some reason I wanted to play 15 years,” he said. “I said that because some of the greatest players who played at that time played 12 to 14 years. So, I thought if I can get up to 15 years, that’s saying something. And once I got to 15 years, I want to play two more, play two more, play two more. I finally got to year 22 and it felt right.” Though he’s been retired for two years, he’s busier than ever. “People think he retired from everything,” Michelle Carter said. “He only retired from the NBA, not life.” He’s currently a basketball analyst with ESPN. He also broadcasts the Atlanta Hawks games. The Hawks were his eighth and final team, and he still makes his home in Atlanta. He also recently finished a season of Vince’s Places, a streaming series on ESPN+, produced by Peyton Man-

ning’s Omaha Productions. During the series, Carter told stories from basketball’s history and visited with some of the game’s greatest players. Now, he has a podcast, “The VC Show.” His competition these days is golf. He competed in the American Century Celebrity Golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, July 6-10, finishing tied for 70th with actor Miles Teller. “I’ve been working hard at it, trying to be a decent golfer, a single-digit golfer,” he said. “That’s my activity. That’s what keeps me sane.” Once in a while he’ll pick up a basketball and shoot a bit, but the former NBA dunk champ doesn’t play anymore. “I don’t miss the game as far as playing. Kids still ask me to dunk. That would hurt me now,” he laughed. “It’s still there, it’s just now I’m on the other side. I stay grounded. No more flights.” Carter’s camp is like a family affair. Most of the coaches — including Joe Giddens, Carter’s high school teammate and now Mainland’s head boys basketball coach — have been with the camp from the start. Alison Pate is a relative newcomer. She’s only coached at this camp since 2012. But she began coaching for Carter at his New Jersey camp in 2007 when he played for the New Jersey Nets. Carter’s wife, Sondi, is the camp’s fitness coach. His 5-year-old son, Vincent, is the youngest camper.

Matanzas: Fries to Junior Allcoach girls wrestling Stars go to state

Faith Diane Sanchez of Palm Coast, FL passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on June 28th, 2022 at the age of 82.

When Faith retired at the age of 68, she and her husband Ralph decided to make their new home in Palm Coast. As members of the Hammock Beach Resort they enjoyed getting together with family and friends for various festivities. During Faith’s leisure time she enjoyed playing tennis and Mahjong with the girls. She was loved so much by all, and is greatly missed. Faith’s celebration of life will be held at the Hammock Beach Resort, Palm Coast, FL. on July 23, 2022 from 2-4 PM.

Faith started her nursing career at Broward General Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, FL working in the ICU unit and then entered an advanced nurse training program where she excelled and was voted Nurse of the Year.

Faith was born in White Plains, New York. She grew up in South Florida, and eventually settled in her beloved home in Palm Coast, FL. Faith is survived by her husband Ralph Sanchez of forty one years. Brother Larry Breslin of Palm Coast, FL., daughter Kim Lawrence of Boca Raton, FL., two sons, Tim Rode (Sheri-lyn) of Live Oak, FL., and Larry Barwick (Lori) of Gainesville, FL., two stepsons Mike Sanchez (Dina) of Collinsville, OK., and Jason Sanchez (Preeta) of Overland Park, KS. She was a loving grandmother to 12 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Faith started her nursing career at Broward General Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, FL working in the ICU unit and then entered an advanced nurse training program where she excelled and was voted Nurse of the Year. Faith practiced for many years at Broward General Hospital and then moved to North Ridge Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale where she accepted a position as a Cardiac Nurse Educator. Over the years Faith was promoted to the Regional Director for all of Tenet Hospitals for the state of Florida.

The age 13-14 team won the Section 3 title on July 16.

Mike Fries is officially Matanzas’ new girls head wrestling coach. Unofficially, his role won’t change too much. As an assistant coach with the Pirates last season, Fries coached both the boys and girls wrestlers. He’ll continue to do that. “We ran both programs as one last year,” he said. “... It’s a co-ed sport up until duals.” Matanzas is one of a few high schools in the state that has a separate head coach for boys and girls wrestling. John White began the girls program in 2018, two years before it became state sanctioned sport. At the Florida High School Athletic Association’s first girls state wrestling championships this past season, Matanzas finished in third place, one point out of second. And freshman Tiana Fries, Mike’s daughter, became the school’s first girls state wrestling champ. White stepped down as head coach after the season to spend more time with his family and concentrate on his job as the Pirates’ head dean. Boys head coach T.J. Gillin said Mike Fries deserves a lot of the credit for the team’s success in 2022. “He pulled girls out of the hallway, and made them love wrestling,” Gillin said. The girls team had 18 firstyear wrestlers this past season, and returns 22 wrestlers, including four who placed at

state: Tiana Fries (110-pound champ), Mariah Mills (third, 105 pounds), Isabella Tietje (sixth, 135 pounds) and Christina Borgmann (eighth, 120 pounds). “We’re convinced we’re the program to beat now,” Gillin said. Mike Fries is the only high school wrestler in VolusiaFlagler history to reach the state finals in four seasons. It’s an achievement he’ll try to help his daughter match. He was a two-time runner-up and two-time state champ at FPC from 1996-1999. He was Seabreeze’s head wrestling coach for three seasons before joining Matanzas. Jeremiah Marschka will continue as an assistant coach, and Gillin and Fries plan to hire three more assistants. “This might sound arrogant, but we think we have the best coaching staff in the state of Florida, and it’s going to stay that way,” Gillin said. With two full teams, the Pirates are outgrowing their wrestling room. But they have a plan for that too, to expand in the future into a larger room with two mats, Fries said.

The Palm Coast Little League Junior All-Stars (ages 13 to 14) won the Section 3 baseball title to advance to the state tournament July 22-24 in Hudson, Florida. “This was a total team effort. All 13 boys contributed to us winning,” said coach Jason Walaskay. The Palm Coast squad handily defeated San Mateo/Arlington in two games — 16-2 and 25-0 — in a best 2-out-of-3 on July 16 at Indian Trails Sports Complex. Only those two Little League organizations in the section had teams competing in the junior division. “When you get above the 12-year-olds, there is a lot of competition from other leagues (for players to participate),” said Walaskay, who has coached youth baseball for over 20 years. “We have a great bunch of kids. I think we have a very good shot at winning state,” he said.
