Three to See

As we look back on 2021, hopefully we can be inspired with ideas for how to make 2022 even better in this wonderful community. Here are what I believe are the 10 most significant storylines of the year. 1. VACCINE DISTRIBUTION

It was a divisive issue to be sure, as many people bristled at mandates, but vaccines were highly effective at saving lives among those who were infected with COVID-19. It started in the spring, when the federal government declared vaccines to be safe. At first, demand was so high that they were made available only to those 65 and older in Florida. The Flagler fairgrounds transitioned into a vaccine depot, with volunteers leading seniors in the drive-thru distribution. Anxious to be protected as quickly as possible, some showed up early in the morning or traveled from surrounding counties. Week after week, Department of Health Officer Robert Snyder reported that nine out of 10 of those who were hospitalized with COVID-19 were unvaccinated. As delta took over as

the dominant variant here and elsewhere, hospitalizations climbed to about 100 in AdventHealth Palm Coast, which means all beds were full. For the first time in history, the entire hospital chain in Central Florida moved from red to black status — the worst. It was a crisis, and health care workers were doing extra shifts and burning out. Since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, Flagler has had 14,715 COVID-19 cases and 277 deaths. Vaccinations have been successful, with 75,749 people getting their shots, making up 68% of the eligible population. 2. SUPPLY AND LABOR SHORTAGES

We are still living with what has become known as the Great Resignation. It has puzzled economists around the country. In Palm Coast, the labor shortage led to difficulty with trash collection, as Waste Pro couldn’t keep staff at levels high enough to maintain its contracted level of service; the city fined the company more than $50,000. Homebuilders faced supply and labor challenges, and even local restaurants had to limit service due to lack of staff. But others took the pandemic as an opportunity to start new businesses. In the first 10 months of 2019, 212 new businesses were started in Palm Coast. That rose to 266 in 2020 and then soared to 467 in 2021.

3. COMMUNITY EVENTS RETURN

In the spring of 2021, Matanzas High School returned to the stage by performing “Newsies.” Other events returned after a year off throughout the summer and fall: Creekside Festival, the Tommy Tant Memorial Surf Classic, a veteran ceremony and lunch put on by the city of Palm Coast and Flagler County, and the Palm Coast tree lighting ceremony. I attended other events that returned this year as well. My kids got to go trunkor-treating again, and I marveled in my church parking lot as people mingled, laughing, catching up with friends. It’s easy to underestimate what those moments mean, but they truly define a community. I had a similarly wonderful time attending Flagler Palm Coast High School’s one-act plays at the Flagler Auditorium. The performance was one thing, but afterward, the actors beamed as they were greeted by friends and family, basking in the praise and encouragement that can only be conveyed effectively in person. And finally, my son Grant is on the Matanzas High School bowling team, and this year, the team was able to hold its year-end banquet, in which the bowlers expressed their love and affection for their teammates. Those moments were taken away by the pandemic last year. Their return helped to resurrect many people’s sense of community. 4. REAL ESTATE PRICES SOAR

Month after month, home

prices continue to rise. For those who own a house, that means their assets are worth more than they dreamed. For many who are renting, that means their bills are becoming unmanageable. This could end up being the biggest story of 2022. 5. GOVERNMENT MEETING DISRUPTIONS

In May, a man was trespassed from City Hall after he approached Mayor Milissa Holland in a threatening manner during a meeting. That prompted the city to add a security guard to City Hall throughout the week. In August, a School Board meeting had to be stopped, and the chambers were cleared, due to some audience members’ refusal to follow the rules of decorum. Put together, the tone of local government meetings has changed. Some parents reported feeling uncomfortable bringing their children to future meetings. National strife has infected Flagler County. 6. REMOVAL OF ‘ALL BOYS AREN’T BLUE’

If you ask some, School Board member Jill Woolbright is a brave advocate of parents’ rights; others call her a book banner. Either way, her request to remove an explicit memoir about a queer Black teen, “All Boys Aren’t Blue,” was granted temporarily, and Flagler Schools will review its procedures for how books are added and how old you need to be to access them. One bright light in the divisive issue is that some on both sides may feel more convinced of the power — and value — of books. 7. HOLLAND PARK SPLASH PAD OPENS

Have you seen the smiles on kids’ faces at Holland Park recently? If not, you should go and sit on a bench and watch the activity on the swings, the zipline, the grassy slide, the splash pad (when it opens again for the spring). What builds the community more than a popular park?

A dozen housing developments have been proposed, and some are under construction already, throughout Palm Coast. Will all those houses actually be built? We shall see. But plenty of trees are coming down, changing the character of many neighborhoods. Meanwhile, several restaurants have opened, as well as Aldi, and Palm Coast is clearly destined for continued growth.

10. HOLLAND RESIGNS, ALFIN ELECTED

After winning a divisive election in 2020, Mayor Milissa Holland unexpectedly resigned in 2021, signaling the end of an era. David Alfin was elected to replace her, and he has been busy, attending multiple events per week, cheering for the city’s successes, a stabilizer.

This might be higher on the list when they’re actually built, but two new hospitals have been announced. AdventHealth Palm Coast Parkway is already under construction, and Flagler Health + closed on 70 acres at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Palm Coast Parkway. After the original AdventHealth, on State Road 100, filled to capacity due to COVID-19 cases, the news of more hospitals was a relief, not to mention the hundreds of jobs that will be added to the economy. In other jobs news, Boston Whaler announced it would move into the former Sea Ray facility and bring up to 400 jobs to the community. 9. DEVELOPMENT ABOUNDS

April 29: April 22: In 1919, William Henry Deen, a local farmer and turpentine producer, built a house at 805 Moody Blvd., Bunnell. For Christmas in 1955, a doll house was built for Doc’s granddaughter, Delores, by Perry Hunt, on the Hunt family farm in Orange Mills, Florida. It was brought in as a surprise on Christmas morning, and was an icon on Moody Boulevard for close to 66 years. The doll house was moved to the Holden House Museum, April 9, 2021.

Here are the moments that define the year for FPC and Matanzas high schools.

BUCHANAN WINS STATE WEIGHTLIFTING TITLE After finishing third at the state championships in both her freshman and sophomore seasons, Flagler Palm Coast weightlifter Annie Buchanan added a second first-place medal to her family trophy case. Annie’s sister, Lexi, won the girls unlimited title in 2018. Annie Buchanan won the 199-pound championship at the Class 3A meet in February. And she didn’t just win, she dominated. She lifted a total of 450 pounds, 85 more than the secondplace finisher. Aryannah Rosa also placed for the Bulldogs, claiming the fifth-place medal in the 110-pound class. The duo helped FPC tie for seventh place as a team. Buchanan, who is now a senior, will have a chance to one-up her sister by making it two titles in a row in 2022.

Winning smile FPC WRESTLING DUO PLACES AT STATE FPC’s Blaine DeFord finished fourth at the state wrestling championships for the second year in a row. DeFord advanced to the consolation finals at 160 pounds at the Class 3A state individual bracket tournament in February. His teammate, Bryce Dodge, placed fifth at 170 pounds to help the Bulldogs place 15th as a team. Both DeFord and Dodge return for their senior season.

Matanzas star Emma Wood held Seabreeze scoreless as a pitcher —and then won the game with her bat.

WOOD LEADS PIRATES IN THE CIRCLE Emma Wood used her arm and her bat to help Matanzas’ softball team qualify for the state playoffs. Once there, she pitched a 1-0 shutout against Gainesville High School on May 6 to advance to the regional semifinals. The junior won 12 games, struck out 139 batters in 131 innings and batted .424 with six home runs. In November, she signed a letter of intent to continue her softball career at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. She began her senior year as the Pirates’ leading hitter on the volleyball team, and she is looking forward to her senior softball season. STRONG SHOWING FOR DOMONIQUE BENNETT Duane Hagstrom’s boys weightlifters joined his girls squad as a top-10 state team. FPC finished ninth at the Class 3A state championships in April. Domonique Bennett led the way with a runner-up finish in the 129-pound class. Bennett lifted a total of 470 pounds in the bench press and clean and jerk. Isaiah Rivers finished fifth at 154 pounds, and Malakai Grant was 10th at 199 pounds. SEE TOP PAGE 17

Jada Williams could play soccer in college if she wanted to, FPC girls soccer coach Pete Hald said. But a track and field scholarship seems to be in her immediate future. Williams is still the top defensive player on the Bulldogs’ soccer team, but track and cross country has taken over as her primary sports. At the Class 4A track and field championships in May, Williams finished ninth in the 1,600 meters with a school record time of 5:09.08. She was also 11th in the 3,200. A three-time state cross country qualifier, Williams finished sixth at the Class 4A meet in November with a time of 19:00 over five kilometers. She was nipping at the heels of the fifthplace runner who finished in 18:59.3. Other top finishes at the state track meets included FPC’s Marcus Freeman’s seventh place in high jump, Matanzas’ Bradyn Cox’s ninth place in discus, Candice Schweizer’s 12th place in the javelin and FPC’s Joshua Terry’s 16th place in pole vault.

graduate Robert Paxia. Paxia had led Lake Gibson to a combined 22-3 record in two seasons, but he wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity to return home. His first season was a roller coaster ride. FPC was in one of the toughest districts in the state, and the Bulldogs lost four straight games in the middle of the season. But they rebounded with shutout wins over DeLand and Matanzas. Two cancellations contributed to the Bulldogs barely missing the playoffs. They finished the season with a bowl win over West Nassau to end the year with a 6-4 record including a forfeit win. BEVACQUA STEPS DOWN After winning 239 games in 12 seasons, FPC girls basketball coach Javier Bevacqua stepped down in August. Bevacqua’s Bulldogs won four district championships, four regional titles and a Final Four appearance in 2015. He was named the 2015 Class 8A Coach of the Year by the Florida Association of Basketball Coaches. OLIVA BOWLS THEM OVER FPC’s Madelynn Oliva bowled a perfect 300 game in a preseason match in August and then led the Bulldogs to a third-place finish at the state bowling championships. Oliva finished fourth at the state individual competition after finishing 11th in 2020.

FPC HIRES ONE OF ITS OWN FPC football coach Travis Roland resigned in April to return to Mainland, his alma mater. The Bulldogs decided to replace Roland with one of their own, 2008 FPC

CRONK COMPETES AT U.S. OLYMPIC SWIM TRIAL After winning seven high school state championships during her swimming career at FPC and signing a scholarship with the University of Florida, one of the top swim programs in the nation, Micayla Cronk competed in three events at the U.S. Olympic swim trials in June. She won her heat in the 100-meter freestyle and finished 24th in the event. At Florida, Cronk finished fourth in the 100-yard free at the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational. On Dec. 4, she finished fifth in the 100-meter free at the Toyota U.S. Open. NOBLE BREAKS FORMER TEAMMATE’S RECORD In September, FPC’s Lucy Noble broke one of Cronk’s school records, the 100-yard butterfly, which had stood since 2017. It was Noble’s fifth entry into the school record books. The junior competed at the Class 4A state meet in November, finishing 13th in the 50 free and 17th in the 100 free. Noble’s teammate, Megan Hurley, dominated her distance freestyle events during the season and finished 18th in the 500 free at state. Matanzas’ Madelyn Derringe finished 13th in the 100 free at the Class 2A meet. Derringe also set a school mark with Karolina Jaronis, Aryanna DiFatta and Isabella Tietje the 200 freestyle relay. Matanzas freshman Teddy Vanderbilt broke the school mark in the 200 individual medley. GAZZOLI SECOND IN STATE Alexandra Gazzoli, a home-school student who golfs for Matanzas, finished second at the state Class 2A tournament in November with an even par 144. Gazzoli shot 2-over 74 on the first day and 2-under 70 on the second day to finish three strokes back of the lead.
