Florida Park Drive reopens after five months

Florida Park Drive reopened on Wednesday, Nov. 23, after almost five months of work.

While the main road has reopened for through-traffic, Farraday Lane to Fawn Lane remains closed because additional electrical work is needed, a city of Palm Coast press release said.

Of Farraday Lane’s two entrances, the southern entrance near Island Walk shopping plaza will remain closed, and the northern entrance will be open.

The city had closed the intersection of Farraday Lane and Florida Park Drive for a utility project, building a new lift station, the press release said. The new station, on Farraday Lane, replaces the station on Florida Park Drive.

The new location will limit traffic obstructions when crews perform routine maintenance, making it safer for them, the release said.

The project was delayed when Hurricanes Ian and Nicole caused power outages, and Florida Power and Light was helping restore power.

The last step of the project required FPL to provide power to the lift station, and FPL was able to do so on Nov. 23.

Feet to Feast 5K draws over 600 people Fire Department Honor Guard goes to state Capitol

The Feet to Feast 5K was a heartpounding success on Thursday, Nov. 24.

The 5K, held on Thanksgiving Day, had 640 registrations and 617 par ticipants and was held at the Day tona State College Flagler Campus in Palm Coast. Every participant received a medal and T-shirt, and top runners for each division won a pie.

Jared Dawson, recreation special ist for the city of Palm Coast, said that the participation this year was unlike anything he’d seen since he began organizing the race.

“We’re used to events growing each year, but this year it just explod ed,” Dawson said. “And I’m thankful for that. I’m glad it’s an event that people want to sign up for.”

The race began at 7:45 a.m. on the east side of the campus. Participants attended a reception afterwards.

The race had several community partners, including AdventHealth, the race’s largest sponsor, Dawson said.

“We’ve been lucky to have some great community partners,” Dawson said.

The top runner overall and for the men was Justin Gilliam, 17, of Palm Coast, with a clock time of 16 min utes and 7 seconds.

The top female runner was Shan non Hickey Jones, 37, of Ormond Beach, with a 17 minute and 52 sec ond run time.

Gilliam placed first overall, and Jones placed fourth. In the second and third overall spots were Chris tian Norfolk, 16, and Sean Gilliam, 19, also of Palm Coast.

Participants were able to sign up for one of two Feet to Feast 5Ks: the

There

In the 65-59 bracket, Nancy Coye, 68, placed topped for the women, and Joe Riello, 66, placed for the men.

“It was a great morning for the race — the weather was just right,” Daw son said. “Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun. I really enjoyed being the one to hype everyone up at the start line.”

The Palm Coast Fire Department Honor Guard presented the nation’s colors at the state Capitol on Tuesday, Nov. 22, for the Florida House of Representatives’ 91st Organization Session.

The honor guard was there on the invitation of Florida State Rep. Paul Renner.

Palm Coast Mayor David Alfin accompanied the members of the honor guard — Firefighters Gabriel Bertola and Jesus Cordova, Lieutenant Patrick Juliano and Battalion Chief Tim Wilsey — to Tallahassee, according to a press release from the city of Palm Coast.

Palm Coast Fire Chief Kyle Berryhill said that representing Palm Coast at the Capitol is a highlight for the honor guard.

The honor guard was able to meet Gov. Ron DeSantis and U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio while in Tallahassee on Tuesday, the press release said.

Renner, who was elected speaker of the House of Representatives, has represented Flagler, St. Johns and Volusia Counties since 2015.

He previously invited the honor guard to the House Designee Ceremony in September 2021, when he was formally elected as House speaker, the press release said.

The Palm Coast Fire Department Honor Guard was established in 2001, the release said, and represents members of its department, their families and the city’s residents.

The honor guard presents a positive image of the department by performing as a “well-trained professional unit at local and national events,” the release said.

New member, new board

Leann Pennington and Greg Hansen are sworn in; commissioners elect new chair and vice-chair.

Leann Pennington was sworn in as the new Flagler County Commis sioner for District 4 on Tuesday, Nov. 22.

Commissioner Greg Hansen — who won reelection for his District 2 seat — also took the oath of office during the special County Commis sion meeting in the board’s cham bers. The board then elected a new chair and vice-chair.

Hansen, who has served as vicechair since November 2021, was the only nominee for chair and was unanimously elected to the posi tion. Commissioner Andy Dance, likewise, was the only nominee for vice-chair and was unanimously elected for that position.

County Judge Melissa Distler swore in Pennington and Hansen individually, and a reception was held after the chair and vice-chair elections.

For future meetings, Hansen said, the county needs to address its water problem; beach and shoreline issues need solutions, as does the flooding problem along the Intracoastal.

Hansen also said he is concerned about building up the county’s reserve funds, but his first priority is spending the taxpayers’ money wisely.

“The most important thing we do is spend the taxpayers’ money and

do it smart, be very smart about it,” Hansen said. “And I think that’s our number one task, and it’s number one in my mind all the time.”

Pennington said she understands she will have a learning curve on the commission, but is eager to tackle issues like bringing broadband to the western side of the county.

She hopes to help open a better dialogue between the commission and residents.

“I am looking forward to good dialogue, being friendly with one another but working through the issues, and hopefully we can start doing some workshops,” Penning ton said.

Pennington thanked her fellow commissioners for their warm wel come and thanked the supporters and family members who came to the ceremony. It took a lot of work to get here, she said.

“It just feels really right and good,” she said.

Flagler Beach water, sewer fees to rise by 8.5%

The commission also faced criticism for not communicating clearly with residents.

The Flagler Beach City Commission voted 3-2 on Nov. 17 to increase the city’s water and sewage fee by 8.5%, then confirmed the increases to water and sewage, stormwater and sanitation in another 3-2 split.

Commissioner Jane Mealy pro posed the 8.5% increase to water and sewage fees, and Chair Ken Bryan and Commissioner Deborah Phillips voted with her. The 8.5% applies to water and sewage fees; sanitation was increased 8% and stormwater fees by $4. The combined increases will raise residents’ bills by $10.52.

The commissioners had discussed the fee increases at the Oct. 27 hear ing and agreed on an 8% hike, but Mealy said she was concerned that 8% wouldn’t cover costs, so she pro posed an additional 0.5% increase.

“We had a great concern last time about making it sufficient,” Mealy said.

Mealy said that if inflation goes down, “maybe we could have a very low number next year.”

Commissioners Eric Cooley and James Sherman voted against the additional increase.

Starlets participate in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Four members of the FPC Starlets colorguard and dance team performed in the iconic parade.

Four Flagler Palm Coast High School Starlets participated in the 96thannual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City on Thurs day, Nov. 24.

Vanessa Arredondo-Alamilla was selected to perform with the col orguard as a member of the Macy’s Great American Marching Band, while Abby Perez and Olivia DeCruz were selected to perform as danc ers with the Macy’s Great American Marching Band. Tianna Leadon was selected to be a dancer with the Spirit of America Dancers.

Arredondo-Alamilla, Perez and Leadon are captains of FPC’s Star lets team.

“All four traveled to New York City for the week to learn choreog raphy and sightsee while creating

memories for a lifetime,” said Lauren Albert, the Starlets’ head coach.

Albert and JV coach Ashlyn Wilk erson accompanied the three Star lets who performed with the Macy’s Great American Marching Band.

The four students and their two coaches were able to sightsee while they were in New York.

They went up to the Top of the Rock — the observatory deck at Rockefeller Center — and saw “Alad din” and “Michael Jackson the Musi cal” on Broadway.

This was Albert’s second year serving as a chaperone at the parade. She accompanied Starlet Kayla Idzi or in 2019. In 2018, Starlet Alyssa Santore performed in the parade. This was the first year that four Fla gler Palm Coast Starlets performed at the parade.

“These girls raised most of the fee to attend by working jobs over the summer and during the school year while also juggling school and practice hours,” Albert said. “We are super proud of them and how well they represented FPC, but also their team.”

“There was a consensus,” Cooley said. “I’m not OK with changing it to even higher.”

The hike is a result of inflation raising the cost of materials, and the 0.5% should ensure those costs are covered, Bryan said. The costs, how ever, should start trending down, City Manager William Whitson said.

“Eight-and-a-half percent is a 40-year high,” he said. “We don’t anticipate it going to continue along that track.”

The public comment section of the Nov. 17 meeting lasted for over two hours. Some residents had specific problems, but many concerns shared a common theme: a lack of commu nication from elected leaders.

“We need more information,” said Carol Fisher, a resident of Fla gler Beach. “The city needs to figure out how to get this information out there.”

The Flagler Beach Police Depart ment’s Facebook page is residents’ only source for information, Fischer said — but just for road closures and other safety information. For other information, like questions about FEMA or city projects, residents don’t have a clear source to go to, she said.

The issue was brought up so many times that Commissioner Deborah Phillips asked staff to add it to the agenda for another meeting so that the commission can discuss it at a workshop.

Commissioner Jane Mealy said that the city does have its own web site and it works with FBPD to update that Facebook page.

“We all have phones, we all have emails,” Mealy said. “I’m not sure what this additional communication will look like.”

Commissioner Eric Cooley said two communication projects were in the last two years’ strategic plans, and were budgeted for this year but kept being put off.

“We agreed during budgeting that we were going to have a member of staff functioning as a public infor mation officer — hasn’t happened,” Cooley said. “We agreed we were going to have a newsletter — hasn’t happened. The money is there for both of them.”

Flagler Beach resident Scott Fox, of Lantana Avenue, called the city’s work environment “toxic,” saying that employees are unable to air con cerns to superiors.

While most of the commissioners seemed confused about Fox’s com plaint, Cooley was not.

He said he’d been expressly told before that employees cannot bring operational concerns to commis sioners without first going through their supervisors.

“They’re forbidden to talk to us,” Cooley said.

Conklin questions response to shooting threat

of a threat at Indian Trails alarmed parents on the last day before Thanksgiving break.

On Friday, Nov. 18, rumors circulated about a possible new shooting threat at Indian Trails Middle School. Days later, a parent of a student at the school told Flagler County School Board members that she was still fearful.

The Flagler County Sher iff’s Office arrested an ITMS sixth grader on Wednesday, Nov. 16, and charged her with sending Snapchat messages in which she threatened a mass shooting at the school, according to a press release by the FCSO.

By Nov. 18, the last day before Thanksgiving break, rumors began circulating that the student who had been arrested was back in school and that there were new threats with other students involved.

At 8:30 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office posted a statement on its Facebook page that the student who had made the threats was still in custody and that there were no new threats to the school or to students. The post also stated that there was an increased law enforcement presence at the school “due to a previ ous threat that was handled by FCSO earlier this week that has recirculated on social media.” ITMS then delivered a robocall to parents.

During public comments at the School Board’s Nov. 23 workshop, a parent said, “Things are circulating. Whether it’s true or not, kids

are scared, parents are scared.” She said that rumors claimed there was a “hit list” that con tained names of students and a staff member.

Tom Wooleyhan, the dis trict’s safety specialist, immediately contacted the Sheriff’s Office and was told that there was no evidence of such a list.

“It is critically important that we are provided with a detailed update,” Board Vice Chair Colleen Conklin said in her closing comments.

“It’s a very dangerous thing when rumors or innuendo are repeated when they are not possibly based on facts, and I think it is critical, if it’s any possibility, I for one would like to know if what we just heard is fact or fiction, because if there is not a hit list, if there are not children on a list somewhere ... it needs to be publicly stated so the rumor could be put to an end.”

Wooleyhan said he was comfortable saying that there is no hit list.

On Nov. 18, rumors began circulating early on social media. A parent posted on the Flagler School Parents group at 8:10 a.m. that her child had texted her about an announcement saying that if a fire alarm goes off, students were to stay and hide in their classrooms. Another parent later commented that she didn’t understand why the school took so long to com municate to parents.

“This is the third day that something is happening and only now we’re getting a call,” the commenter said.

Superintendent Cathy Mittelstadt said it was a dif ficult time, but staff worked through it and did what they needed to do.

“Safety is first,” Mittel stadt told the board. “Every principal will tell you when

they walk on their school site, or every (district) direc tor when they’re with their department will tell you it’s always an awareness of safety first before they can execute any operations of the day. As a board member, you will receive priorities on factual information we can share with you. Much of that cannot be shared beyond that detail. We appreciate you trusting us.

“It’s unfortunate that there are social media platforms out there that hear one thing and say something else. By the time it got to the seventh person, the story’s complete ly different than what was heard,” Mittelstadt added. “I cannot control that false mes saging out there. But I assure you as a superintendent, safe ty is a priority, and when there is an event on our campuses or within our departments, you will be notified immediately.”

UPDATE ON MATANZAS EXPANSION

With three new board mem bers taking their oaths of office earlier in the day, the agenda for the Nov. 23 work shop provided information on the Matanzas High School expansion project, a citizens oversight committee and the district’s progress on achiev ing the six goals of its strategic plan.

Architect Patrick Rauch said the district will advertise for bids for the $18 million Matanzas project in January, with bids due in April. Fol

lowing two workshops, final board approval is scheduled for June 20. Construction is scheduled to be completed by January, 2025.

Dave Freeman, the district’s chief of operations, said a spe cial board meeting, scheduled earlier than June 20 to vote on the project, could knock a month off the planning pro cess.

“We think we are still within budget, but we have a lot of long-lead items,” Free man said. “If we can cut off a month and get those longlead items ordered, we’ll be closer to finishing on time.”

The project includes a new 20,000-square-foot addi tion connected to Building 5, which will house a state-ofthe-art media center, a new construction lab and class rooms; a new central energy plant and updated electrical transformer; and a new mul tipurpose metal building for PE classes and athletics next to the current field house. Building 4, where the media center is currently located, will be converted into a new, larger cafeteria.

With the expansion, the school will accommodate 366 more students.

The district is looking for parents, community members and business partners to join a citizens oversight commit tee that will focus on how the district spends funds from the half-cent sales tax that voters recently approved for another 10 years.

Volusia School Board members sworn in

Three members of the Volu sia County School Board were sworn into office for a new term on Monday, Nov. 28.

Board members Ruben Colon and Jamie Haynes were recently reelected for a sec ond four-year term. Jessie Thompson was elected to rep resent District 3 on the board, succeeding former board member Linda Cuthbert, who did not run for reelec tion and was recognized dur ing the organizational session for her eight years of service on the board.

“She has served Volusia County diligently for a num ber of years with a lot of heart

Residential burglary, criminal mischief. Vandals broke into a rental property and spray painted profanities and graf fiti on the walls, causing an estimated $3,000 in damage.

Police officers spoke with the driver, a 27-year-old Flagler Beach woman who consented to a search of her Jeep. Officers found a partially empty bottle of a strawberry margarita-flavored wine cocktail as well as three open bottles of lemon-fla vored vodka.

Loitering or prowling. An officer noticed a car parked in front of a closed business in a “known drug area,” accord ing to a police report. The car was occupied by a 27-year-old DeLand man, his partner and their child. When the officer shone a light into the car, the man ran across the street to a home.

The property manager came to check on the home and found graffiti on the back side and interior. The van dals had removed a screen from a bedroom window and presumably entered the house that way, an incident report said. Among other graffiti text, the individuals had sprayed, “Stop Locking my Home,” with profanity at the end.

Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies planned to contact the previous tenants about the vandalism, the report said.

The reporting officer noted that the woman’s eyes were glassy and bloodshot, and that she appeared disoriented and had trouble answering questions about her where abouts before the crash. He asked her to perform field sobriety exercises, and she at first refused, saying she was taking a new medication which would affect her ability to complete the exercises, according to the report.

When officers told her that her refusal may be used as evidence against her in court, she agreed to do the exer cises. She failed them, and after being arrested, became combative, according to the report. She kicked officers and was pepper sprayed.

The woman was taken to jail.

NOV. 16 WAITING IN THE SHADOWS 3:30 a.m. — 100 block of South Yonge Street, Ormond Beach

Two other units arrived. The man was seen standing in the shadows in the home’s front yard, the report states. The man eventually entered the home.

As police were speaking with the man’s partner, the man came out of the house and agreed to speak with of ficers. He said they had been visiting friends at the home. He gave officers permission to search him, and officers discovered that he had an open warrant. They asked him to place his hands behind his back.

The man pulled away and ran, but was caught. When asked why he fled, the man said he was “just scared of law enforcement” and didn’t know he had a warrant, the report states.

The man and his partner could not dispel officers’ con cerns about why they were parked in front of the closed business. The woman later told police she had taken the man to the area because he wanted to buy drugs.

The man was taken to jail.

CRIME REPORT

Man jailed after allegedly kissing underage girl

A 55-year-old sex offender was arrested at 11:30 p.m. Nov. 19 after allegedly kissing a girl under the age of 10, violating his parole for a second time.

Suspect David Futch, ar rested in his camper on a property in the 1800 block of Beech Boulevard in Bunnell, was already on probation for failing to register, his arrest report said. A woman called police on Futch when a third party told her that Futch had kissed her daughter.

The daughter confirmed that Futch had kissed her, the report said. She told deputies she was alone in the camper with him, showing him her Pokémon cards, when he shut the camper door and kissed her on the lips, telling her “I love you,” the report said.

The girl said she then heard a friend call her name from outside the camper, and she left, the report said. The girl told her friend about the incident, and the adults at the property’s main residence were made of aware of it and told the girl’s mother.

When confronted by police, Futch denied having kissed the girl on the lips but said he kissed her goodbye on the cheek and forehead and had done so several times before, according to the report.

Futch was arrested and faces a misdemeanor battery charge and a felony violation of parole charge.

Woman recorded while using Publix restroom

A man snuck into the wom en’s restroom at a local Publix on Nov. 18 and took video of a woman using the toilet, the woman reported to police.

The incident occurred at a Publix on North Ocean Shore Boulevard.

The woman told deputies

that she was using the bath room when she noticed that the shoes in the stall next to her were very large and fac ing toward the toilet, rather than away. She began to feel uncomfortable and was get ting ready to leave when she saw that the person in that stall was holding a cell phone over the stall wall, pointing towards her.

The woman yelled at the person to stop. The person removed the phone, and the woman left the restroom. The suspect, a man, left the rest room after her and ran toward the exit. The woman called 911 and tried to follow him.

The woman and a store manager gave detailed de scriptions of the man to FCSO deputies. The man has since been identified, according to a post on the FCSO’s Face book page.

Flagler County Fire Rescue has been providing mutual aid since Saturday, Nov. 26, to Florida Forest Service and Department of Environmental Protection staff fighting a 4-acre brush fire in Favoretta.

The fire started about noon on Nov. 26 at Arrow Materi als, a company that collects brush to convert to mulch.

“We are doing everything we can to get a handle on this so that it isn’t a lingering problem for neighbors in the area,” Tucker said.

Ron Rice home lists for $6 million

This is the first time the late Hawaiian Tropic founder’s home has been put on the market.

Hawaiian Tropic suncare company founder Ron Rice loved to entertain, and his Ormond Beach home reflects that.

The 12,000-square-foot oceanfront home was listed for sale for the first time on Nov. 18 for $5,999,900. Com plete with a disco dance floor, three pools — one of which is indoor and connected to one of the outdoor pools — and an indoor/outdoor bar and lounge, the home is a person ification of Rice, said listing agent Bill Navarra, broker and owner of Realty Pros Assured.

“I think Ron was a born entertainer,” Navarra said.

“And I think he would want whoever takes over the home to entertain in it, and enjoy it and just celebrate such an amazing home and really cel ebrate such an amazing man.”

Many celebrities have

stepped inside the home at 175 Ocean Shore Blvd.: John Travolta, Paul Newman, Tim Allen, Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan and Bill Clin ton are among those who have attended Rice’s parties over the years.

Rice, who died at 81 in May, had the home built in 1987. It features four bedrooms — two of which are direct oceanfront “owners’ suites” with pri vate views — and five baths, unique woodwork through out the living and entertain ing areas, a three-car garage, a downstairs guest suite with access to the pool deck and a kitchen with a wraparound breakfast bar, which was built in the ’90s. For many years, the house didn’t have a kitch en, Navarra said, since Rice put so much of his focus on entertaining.

Navarra had worked with Rice for many years before his death.

The main living area, he said, shows who Rice was.

“It’s very eclectic, but Ron was a world traveler, and there’s so many pieces, local and then from worldwide,” Navarra said.

The living area also has photos of former Hawaiian Tropic pageant contestants,

to be sold separately. What stands out to Navarra the most, though, is the disco dance floor, which features lighting and electronics by the team that designed the New York City nightclub Studio 54.

All of the rock and stone in the home’s exterior was brought by Rice from his home state of North Carolina.

Navarra said he’s never had a listing garner as much attention as Rice’s home. The listing was recently featured on Mansion Global’s website.

It’s a piece of Ormond Beach history, he added. Rice was part of the Ormond Beach community, and not just another client for Navarra — he was a friend, one Navarra enjoyed sitting and meet ing with for the past 12 years, Navarra said. Rice used to call him Brother Bill; he loved to give nicknames.

The property merits a unique buyer, Navarra said.

“It’s on an amazing piece of property in an amazing loca tion,” he said. “So the prop erty itself, without the celeb rity involvement to it, has an amazing value on its own, and then adding the fact that it was owned by a celebrity, I think, just increases it expo nentially.”

Development degrades Palm Coast’s beauty

Dear Editor:

Unfortunately, it’s time to point out that the aesthetics of Palm Coast are degrading substantially and at an accelerated pace, due to things like litter, traffic and wanton development. If there is not better control, property values across the board will suffer.

This is somehow lost on the current City Council, and particu larly the mayor, who, in my experi

ence, is much less responsive than previous leaders of the city and is proving to be more a realtor than a mayor.

At a meeting last September, the mayor, appearing before a welcom ing clutch of about 55 local realtors and asked what he was going to do for fellow realtors, replied, accord ing to FlaglerLive, “The city within its current city limits has 27,000 additional unimproved acres of land or another 10,000 acres of land, which would naturally annex in to the city of Palm Coast for utility purposes. So this initiative I’m promoting would double the geographic footprint of the city of

Principal, Assistant Principal of the Year announced

Marcus Sanfilippo is Flagler Schools’ Principal of the Year; Donelle Evensen is the Assistant Principal of the Year.

When Superintendent Cathy Mit tlestadt gathered the “prize patrol,” made up of her cabinet, to award the Flagler Schools Principal and Assis tant Principal of the Year, they didn’t have to go far.

The 2022-23 Assistant Principal of the Year for Flagler Schools is Donelle Evensen, assistant principal at Bunnell Elementary School. And the 2022-23 Principal of the Year for Flagler Schools is her boss, Bunnell Elementary Principal Marcus San filippo.

“BES is making significant strides coming out of the pandemic, and Marcus and Donelle are two of the reasons this is happening,” Mittel stadt said. “The two of them have also worked together to re-engage the people of the Bunnell area with their community school, and that involvement is paramount to achiev ing success.”

Evensen and Sanfilippo are no strangers to Flagler Schools honors.

Sanfilippo was the 2007 District Teacher of the Year when he was a teacher at Buddy Taylor Middle School. He was named the District Assistant Principal of the Year in 2015, when he was at Indian Trails Middle School.

Evensen was the 2019 District Teacher of the Year when she was at Rymfire Elementary.

This is Sanfilippo’s seventh year leading Bunnell Elementary. How did he get here? It’s been a journey,

FLAGLER COUNTY UNEMPLOYMENT

RISES FROM 3% TO 3.2%

The unemployment rate in Flagler County changed little after Hurricane Ian, according to a news release from the Palm Coast-Flagler Regional

he said.

“I think just being part of a great team, the team here at BES with the wonderful support of our assistant principals, support from the district, and just being under other great leaders, having people model what it means to be a leader and then just trying to exemplify that and live that out within the district,” he said.

Evensen is in her fourth year as assistant principal at Bunnell Ele mentary.

Reflecting on this honor, she said, “My goal as an assistant principal is to be supportive and be there for the teachers and students as much as possible in order to help them reach their potential. This is just a little validation that I’m on the right track.”

Both Evensen and Sanfilippo are graduates of Flagler Palm Coast High School.

They will represent Flagler Schools in the statewide Principal and Assis tant Principal of the Year program.

Palm Coast.”

Let that sink in. Let also sink in that he referenced what he calls “the frontier” — a vast swath of land on the west side of U.S. 1 — on track to add 12,000 homes and 3.15 million square feet of commercial space in two huge developments alone. This says nothing about all the lots being developed and projects planned or underway else where in the city.

In short, the current government is looking to the short-term and dollar signs than long-term value, dead set, it seems, on making Palm Coast a sprawling little metropolis, with ever larger government and tax

LOCAL BOYS SCOUT TROOPS OPEN CHRISTMAS TREE LOT

Parents and scouts from Boy Scout Troop 281 and Scouts BSA Troop 4281 were looking for ways to help the Scouts earn their way through the programs, especially to help cover the ever-increasing costs of attending summer camp. The solu tion lay a few hundred miles north: the Frasier fur tree farms of North Carolina.

On Tuesday, Nov. 22, Scouts, fami lies and volunteers unloaded 500 trees and set up a massive Christ mas tree lot at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Palm Coast.

“For a number of years, our Scout parents have worked long hours at a concession stand during the Dayto na 500,” said Troop 281 Scoutmaster

income — not the green gem that enticed so many of us here. “This initiative provides it and we are only one of four large swaths of land left on the entire east side of Florida that presents this opportunity,” he intoned — unsurprisingly, to vigorous applause from the realtors. “We have a star alignment at the moment.”

Mr. Mayor, you are not the “real tor in chief.” You were sworn in as mayor of us all. A “star alignment”— or a hoodoo star?

Jason Wheeler. “We wanted a signifi cant fundraiser that the Scouts had a direct hand in, since youth cannot work the concession stands at the track. That’s when we thought about Christmas trees.”

Cinnamon Bitzer is the committee chairperson for both troops. When her family lived in Tallahassee, the Scout troop they were affiliated with ran a successful tree lot. She sees potential here.

“It’s an excellent opportunity for our kids to get their hands dirty, work on their entrepreneurship skills and offer a needed service to our community,” she said. “We think the people in Flagler County will want to help our local youth.”

The lot opened Wednesday, Nov. 23. As of Nov. 26, it is open seven days a week — 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays, noon to 8 p.m. on Sun days and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The lot is located at Trinity Presby terian Church, 156 Florida Park Drive North.

Trees start at $80.

Florida Department of Economic Opportunity data showed an increase from 3% in September 2022 to 3.2% in October 2022, according to the news release.

“Thankfully, Hurricane Ian did not have a significant impact on local jobs,” said Greg Blosé, president and CEO of the chamber. “Flagler County did see an increase in the number of unem ployed residents and a slight decline

in the number of local jobs in Octo ber 2022. Overall, Flagler weathered Hurricane Ian well, from an economic perspective.”

The number of Flagler County residents who are employed declined by 246, from 49,562 in September 2022 to 49,316 in October 2022, ac cording to the news release.

The number of job-seeking residents rose by 74, to 1,604 in October 2022.

Blosé said Flagler County unemploy

“Looking ahead, the Chamber will continue to monitor national, state and local economic data in reference to a potential recession in 2023,” he said. “Unfortunately, inflation remains his torically high and Floridians’ outlook on the economy remains dim, accord ing to the latest Florida consumer sentiment data.”

YOUR NEIGHBORS

Ready, set, glow

Palm Coast Vice Mayor Eddie Branquinho stood in front of the dark Christmas tree in Central Park at Town Cen ter and called to the kids and families crowded around.

“All right,” he said, “you’re all going to say, very loud, with me: ‘Santa, where are you?’”

The dense crowd of children and families called back, “Santa, where are you?” And like a Christmas mir acle, Santa appeared on a sleigh of flashing lights — or, rather, a Palm Coast fire truck.

Santa, it seemed, had been delayed by the traffic of Palm Coast resi dents coming to see the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and the Rotary Club’s Fantasy Lights Festival. Once he arrived, Santa and Palm Coast City Council members all gath ered around the giant light switch. Moments later, Central Park was alight.

“The Tree Lighting Ceremony and the Fantasy Lights Festival have truly

become holiday traditions that city employees and residents look for ward to every year,” Palm Coast City Manager Denise Bevan said in a press release.

The Nov. 26 ceremony marked Palm Coast’s 11th-annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and the Rotary Club’s 17th-annual Fantasy Lights Festival.

Attendees circled the pond, tour ing the animated light displays fea

turing Christmas carols and winter themes.

The light displays are a self-guided tour around the pond, with a stop available at Santa’s Village for kids to meet Saint Nick himself and take a train ride. Palm Coast Parks and Recreation also set up two crafting booths for kids at the entrance.

“We have 50 animated light dis plays [this year],” Jeanette Loftus said.

Loftus was the Rotary Club dis trict governor for the JacksonvilleOceanside district from 2018-2019.

Jared Dawson, recreation special ist for the city of Palm Coast, said the Tree Lighting Ceremony is probably the city’s most photographed event.

“[Tonight] went really well,” Daw son said. “It’s about people coming out and having fun and taking pic tures.”

Admission to the lights festival is free.

The lights will be on from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. every day through Dec. 30.

The train ride for kids, Loftus said, will be full-time after Dec. 9, and only on the weekends until then.

Motown & Mo’ returns on Dec. 3

Carlos Ann Butler started the Motown & Mo’ show in 1998. It has been going strong ever since.

The 2022 show, “Motown & Mo’ Home for the Holidays,” will be at performed at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at Flagler Auditorium. Tickets are $30 ($25 for groups of 10 or more). Order at bit.ly/3OG2xNE.

The show raises money for college scholarships awarded to local students through its nonprofit, City Lites Inc. Over 50 cast members are involved in the show.

“We always get a good crowd,” said Jimmy Sims, the show’s director and the president of City Lites. “The community looks forward to it, because we put them back in time.”

The show mainly consists of music from the Motown era of the ’60s and ’70s, along with skits and comedy, Sims said. But it also includes music from the ’80s, ’90s and 2000s — that’s where the Mo’ comes in.

“I get transported to when I was 16,” said Marva Jones, who is on City Lites’ promotions team and whose husband, William “B.J.” Jones, has been in the show since 2007.

“People get up and dance,” Marva Jones said. “They’re doing the work onstage and we’re having a ball in the audi ence.”

Motown & Mo’ had been staged on the third weekend in October until 2017, when it was moved to December because of the auditorium’s schedule. There was no show in 2018 because of renova

tions at the auditorium, and the show was also canceled in 2020 because of the pandem ic. It returned last year.

The final acts are holidaythemed, but they are still Motown classics, B.J. Jones said. This year, one act will impersonate the Temptations performing “Silent Night.”

Sims said the cast and crew rehearses for three months.

“We sit down, download music people hear,” Sims said. “We play it, critique it, and decide who might be the person to do this part. We’re always on the lookout for new material. We try to bring a dif ferent slant each year.”

At the beginning of the show, the cast members hon or former Motown & Mo’ cast and crew who died during the previous year. This year, they will honor Donna Decina with a song. Decina, an origi nal Motown and Mo’ member, died in September.

The majority of the per formers and crew have been involved with the show for years, Sims said. They include retired schoolteachers, doc tors and CEOs.

“We’re all volunteers,” Sims said. “The majority are

retired. We’re getting old. We can’t make those moves like we used to. But we also have a few young people in their early 30s. Young people don’t usu ally want to make that com mitment. But when we get that commitment, it’s game on.”

Butler, who was a teacher before she retired in Palm Coast, had put on a similar charity show in Peekskill, New York. She died in 2016. Sims became director in 2011.

B.J. Jones, 79 and City Lites’ treasurer, first saw the show in 2006, at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center.

“I said, ‘I have to get in that cast,’” he recalled. “I had done some choir singing and a little community theater when I lived in Cleveland. I’ve always enjoyed singing. I told (But ler), ‘I’d like to join your cast,’ and she said no. But the next year, Jimmy Sims called me and asked if I was still inter ested, because one of the per formers was sick.”

B.J. Jones sang Wilson Pick ett’s “Mustang Sally” that year. This year, he will be per forming a Ray Charles song. He will also be one of the Pips when Ruthie Sanders per forms as Gladys Knight.

Triple threat

In his first year on the track and field team last season, Flagler Palm Coast’s Gerod Tolbert finished fourth in the triple jump at the Class 4A state championships.

Now, in his first season of var sity basketball, Tolbert is making an impact in that sport too. Primarily a football player, the senior stepped right off the football field onto the basketball court and into the start ing lineup.

“He is an athletic kid,” said FPC basketball coach Derrick Williams. “He runs, jumps and plays hard. Toughness is something you can’t necessarily teach.”

Tolbert scored a team-high nine points in the Bulldogs’ home opener Monday, Nov. 28 — a 55-39 loss to Spruce Creek. He would have scored more had he made a few more free throws. He repeatedly split the Hawks’ zone to get to the basket and draw the foul, but went just 1 of 12 from the free throw line as his inex perience showed.

“Every free throw he missed did not bother me one bit whatsoever, because I understand he is coming out of football,” Williams said. “He hasn’t even played basketball, and he’s giving us everything he has.”

Tolbert last played basketball on the JV team as a freshman.

“This is my senior year. I wanted to play all three sports,” Tolbert said, adding sheepishly, “I have to work on my free throws.”

Williams said he recruited Tolbert last summer.

“I was trying to get one of the best athletes in the school. Last year we couldn’t play as fast as we can now with Gerod,” Williams said.

Matt Rodriguez also scored nine

points for the Bulldogs. The junior guard connected on three 3-point ers. Jameer Clark scored eight points, hitting two 3-pointers.

Spruce Creek, playing its first game of the season, trailed 12-11 after the first quarter. But the Hawks ramped up the pressure to take a 24-19 lead into halftime and then held the Bull dogs to just two points in the third quarter to take a 15-point lead into the final eight minutes.

“I think my young guys didn’t handle the pressure,” Williams said.

FPC (1-3) opened the season by splitting two games in Valdosta, Georgia, Nov. 21-22. The Bulldogs were scheduled to play three more games in their first week back from Thanksgiving break.

They lost to University 50-48 on Nov. 29 and are scheduled to host first-year school St. Johns Beach side on Dec. 1 before wrapping up the week Dec. 3 in Daytona Beach for a game against DME Academy Blue.

Un-four-gettable: Mainland advances to state football semifinals

Ajai Harrell scored four touchdowns as the Bucs defeated Jensen Beach to advance to the final four for the first time in eight years.

Travis Roland was not altogether happy with his first season as Main land High School’s football coach last year. The Bucs lost five games and were eliminated in the first

round of the playoffs. Roland wanted to get the Bucs back to playing Main land football.

They have.

Mainland thumped Jensen Beach 45-10 on the road in the Region 3-3S final on Friday, Nov. 25, to advance to the state semifinals for the first time since 2014.

“It was awesome. It feels amazing for us to get ourselves one step away (from the championship game) and to know that in our classification, we’re one of four teams still playing,” Roland said. “A lot of people started off playing, and now it’s down to four.”

The Bucs (10-3) will travel for the third week in a row on Friday, Dec. 2, to take on Fort Myers Dunbar (10-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The winner will play Lake City Columbia or Lake Wales in the Class 3S title game in Fort Lauderdale the weekend of Dec. 15-17.

Senior Ajai Harrell scored four touchdowns at Jensen Beach to give him 11 in the past five games and 25 for the season.

“Ajai is making himself one of the greatest we’ve ever seen,” Roland said. “He’s putting himself in that crazy, crazy, crazy upper strato sphere of Mainland football greats that play on the offensive side of the ball. I’m just proud of him. He’s the guy that sets the tone for us all the time with his leadership in the weight room, in the classroom and practice and conditioning.”

Harrell set the tone against the Falcons, returning the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown. He went on to score three rushing touchdowns, including an 89-yard dash to put the Bucs up 16-0. Har rell now has 12 rushing touchdowns and 12 receiving touchdowns and one return for a score.

“The energy was there from the beginning,” Roland said. “And (Har rell’s kickoff return) just made the energy go through the roof.”

Roland said using Harrell at both wide receiver and running back has helped the senior’s production as well as that of Mainland’s other elite receiver, James Randle.

“Now is the time we want to make

sure our best players are getting the ball,” Roland said. “I think we’re able to get Ajai and James and the ball in different ways, because when Ajai’s at running back, our running game goes up to a different level. And that makes (defenses) have to load the box, and now James is getting one-on-ones. And we all know that James is very difficult to handle one on one.”

Randle caught a 59-yard touch down pass from Damarcus Creecy with two seconds left in the first half to give Mainland a commanding 30-10 lead. Harrell’s second touch down run of the third quarter forced a running clock the rest of the way. The Bucs’ 35-point margin of vic tory was their second largest of the season.

“We were able to put together a complete game. I think it was prob ably our best defensive performance of the year,” Roland said. “(Defensive lineman) Ramon McCollough had three sacks and a forced fumble. His play over the last month or six weeks has just been astronomically amaz

ing.”

Dunbar upset Naples 14-7 to advance to the state semifinals for the first time in school history. The Tigers held Naples’ vaunted running attack to 145 yards.

“They’ve really got some athletes. They’re a school that traditionally flies around and plays with a lot of energy, so we’ve got to match that,” Roland said. “I’m sure their place is going to be rocking, because they’re the only guys in town that will be playing. So we’ve got to be prepared to match the energy that they’re going to bring.”

Roland played on Mainland’s only state championship team in 2003. Now the Bucs are two wins away from adding a second title to the school’s record book.

“Everybody sets out to win a state championship. And you always talk about how hard you’re going to work,” Roland said. “And so, I think for these kids to see that they can dedicate themselves to a goal and see it come to fruition, it makes all the hard work worth it.”

SIDELINES

Former FPC track star joins coaching staff

Early in the school year, when Flagler Palm Coast High School needed to add a female PE teacher, Principal Bobby Bossardet asked Dave Halliday if he knew anybody. Halliday asked for a day or two to think about it.

This was a chance for Halliday, the Bulldogs’ head cross country and track and field coach, to add a female track coach to his staff.

“We have desperately needed a female on the staff,” he said.

But he couldn’t think of anybody until one of his assistants mentioned the obvious: Alycia Williams — the most accomplished female track athlete in county history.

It turned out to be a perfect match. Halliday has been the head coach of the four teams for 14 of his 19 years at the school. This was a chance for a woman to take over the girls track team, with Halliday concentrating on the boys team while still directing the overall program.

Williams had been the head track coach at Hickory Ridge High School outside of Charlotte, North Carolina. She led two relay teams to national titles at the adidas Nationals in June. She wasn’t thinking about leaving the area where her twin sister, Alyce, is also a teacher and track coach. But Halliday’s inquiry came at the right time.

“He randomly sent me a text in October, ‘Hey, do you want to come back home?’ You know what? It worked out perfectly,” she said. “My lease was up. My parents still live here. My kids would get to spend time with their grandparents. So, it was just better to come home.”

Williams has been at FPC

for about three weeks, and she said everything has been seamless. She said she knew about half of her co-workers coming in.

The Williams twins graduated from FPC in 2001.

Alycia owns school records in the 100, 200, 400 and 800.

Alyce owns school records in the long jump and triple jump.

Alycia won state championships in the 400 and 200 her junior year, setting a state record in the 400. In her senior year, she got pregnant but still finished second in the 400 to Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas’ Sanya Richards, who went on to win the 2009 world championship and the 2012 Olympic championship in the 400 meters.

Alycia and Alyce went on to run track at George Mason University and Florida State. The twins were co-captains at FSU, and Alycia was an AllAmerican in the 4x400 relay.

The Bulldogs’ track and field teams began offseason conditioning this week.

Williams said she has been impressed with how organized the teams are. She is not the only new coach with the program. Longtime Spruce Creek throws coach Paul Spegele is now FPC’s throws coach. And former FPC and Bethune-Cookman University football star Jimmie Robinson will help Williams coach sprinters.

Robinson and Spegele are both also assistant coaches with the football team.

“Every event coach has a common goal of how can we just be great,” Alycia Williams said. “At the coaches’ meetings, everybody’s receptive of what the other coaches are saying. We have people that are jumpers and sprinters — both of our programs work together. I think that’s rare. I haven’t seen that. When I say

we’re organized, we’re very organized. We’re hitting the ground running.”

Having coaches like Robinson and Williams returning to FPC provides the kids with role models they can relate to, Halliday said.

“The kids can see they’re from here and say, ‘They were just like me,’” Halliday said.

“Getting Alycia is a win for the program. I know she can coach, and once we talked, she was really excited.”

Stetson ID Camp

Former Flagler Palm Coast and Stetson University soccer player Nate Monsanto will be one of the coordinators at Stetson’s Men’s Soccer ID Camp on Dec. 3-4, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for high school-aged players.

Monsanto said when he was in high school the ID Camp helped give him the opportunity to play for the Hatters.

Stetson’s head coach, Emmett Rutkowski, and his assistants Jaime Ibarra and Eduardo Jimenez are the other coordinators.
