Bird flu arrives in Volusia County The Marine Science Center is temporarily halting all sick and injured bird intakes after receiving three birds that tested positive for avian influenza last week, a Volusia County press release stated.

The birds — two royal terns and one lesser scaup — were euthanized. There is a low risk of transmission to humans and, to date, there have been no known human infections in North America. Still, the Marine Science Center has closed its avian areas to the public until further notice.

“This was a difficult decision, but we had to take these steps to protect our current resident and patient birds,” said Chad Macfie, manager of the Marine Science Center. “We’re also ramping up our cleaning and safety protocols to help prevent the introduction of the virus into our facility.”

The center currently houses 18 permanent birds and 18 which are undergoing treatment and rehabilitation.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission advises the public against handling sick or dead wildlife and to prohibit the contact of domestic birds with wild birds.

Antisemitic flyers delivered to Ormond homes

Police Explorers seeking support

Antisemitic flyers accusing the Jewish community of being behind “the COVID agenda” were distributed by unknown persons to homes on Riverside Drive on Monday, Feb. 21, according to Ormond Beach Police.

An incident report details that a resident called police around 9:40 a.m. after he spotted a suspicious vehicle while walking his dog. The witness said that the driver of the vehicle, a silver Jaguar convertible “with a loud exhaust,” kept stopping and revving his engine, reversing and then driving forward again. The witness thought this was odd behavior, as Riverside Drive is a one-way street and the driver and passenger, described as a Black man and woman, didn’t park or pull into anyone’s driveway.

No one police spoke with saw the pair throw the flyers, encased in plastic bags and weighed down with rice.

“It’s hurtful,” Ormond Beach Police Chief Jesse Godfrey said. “And it makes me sad, not only as a police chief, but as a human being that we have this small segment of our society that wants to spread their hate.”

The flyers, which Godfrey said have also been delivered to homes around John Anderson Drive, claim that “Every single aspect of the COVID agenda is Jewish,” and lists names of people who hold leadership positions within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other medical and pharmaceutical organizations, stating they were all of Jewish faith and “celebrating their role in COVID.” The bottom of the flyer read, “These flyers were distributed randomly without malicious intent,” and includes a QR code for an antisemitic video platform website run by the Goyim Defense League, “a loose network of individuals connected by

their virulent antisemitism,” according to the Anti-Defamation League.

The ADL website states that the organization “espouses vitriolic antisemitism and white supremacist themes via the internet, through propaganda distributions and in street actions,” and that they engage in antisemitic stunts and schemes to “troll” or harass Jews.

Unfortunately, Godfrey said there are no laws to address the people spreading the flyers because they are protected by the First Amendment. But, he said OBPD is communicating with other law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, and said they are doing everything possible to hold the individuals accountable, but that there are no direct threats at this time.

The chief said he didn’t want to give the hate speech organization more publicity, as that would give them the illusion of power to make an impact.

“One thing we need now more than anything is stability, and quite a few people said that. To have another changeover or to not give this man who’s worked so hard the reassurance that he has a job next Dec. 3 is ludicrous.”

One resident wrote an email to elected officials about the flyers, calling it a “most disturbing situation.”

Laurel Robinson wrote that she was reaching out to draw their attention to them. “As democratically elected officials sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United States, and those who seek this office, I call on you to condemn these distributors who flout freedom of speech to promote a vicious cycle of hate.”

This is not the first antisemitic incident in the city of Ormond Beach in the recent months.

In December 2021, two men were arrested for a series of vandalism acts consisting of stickers with antisemitic content placed in several areas of Ormond Beach. The city reported over $2,000 in damages and labor.

Both men were released on bail.

The city of Ormond Beach recently announced that it had received a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States. The city announced on its Facebook page that this is the 28th consecutive year it has received the award.

Ormond Beach Fire honors Fire Chief Sievers’ retirement

Ormond Beach Fire Chief Richard Sievers loves a good quote.

So naturally, during his last achievement ceremony as the city’s fire chief at Fire Station 92 on Monday, Feb. 21, Sievers shared a couple regarding change, since that is what the department is experiencing at this time with his retirement, and that of Deputy Fire Chief Tom Bazanos. Four new firefighters took their oath of office at the ceremony, two received their badges, and eight were promoted.

Change is not always bad, Sievers said. He repeated the words of Winston Churchill, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom: “To improve is to change. To be perfect is to change often.”

“That’s exactly what we’re doing in fire service,” Sievers said. “Actually, in the entire city. In your life, every single day, it’s always changing.”

Battalion Cmdr. Dave King will serve as the city’s interim fire chief upon Siever’s departure on Thursday, Feb. 24. Sievers, who dedicated 44 years of his life to fire service, will be returning to the city of Deerfield Beach, where he has been hired as its emergency manager.

Sievers began his career in fire service in 1979 with the city of Lauderhill, where he became fire chief in 1999. He also worked for the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the Fort Lauderdale International Airport, Lauderdale by the Sea, Cooper City and Deerfield Beach before becoming Ormond Beach’s fire chief in 2018.

According to a proclamation presented to him by City Commissioner Susan Persis, Sievers’ accomplishments durng his time as fire chief include establishing replacement schedules for large expenditures such as bunker gear and fire trucks, with the first two added to the city’s fleet in 2021. He was also responsible for the relocation and upgrade of the city’s emergency operations center to Fire Station 92, where he and Bazanos spent the first 10 weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic monitoring situations and implementing policies.

vehicles and coordinated the transition to upgrade the radio systems in the city.

King, who postponed his own retirement to aid the department in the transition of chiefs, said he has “huge shoes to fill.” An Army veteran, he has been with the department for 23 years, and, forms part of the Ormond Beach Civil Air Patrol. King thanked City Manager Joyce Shanahan for the opportunity to serve as interim fire chief and said Sievers’ leadership and guidance brought about many changes and advancements in the department.

“Chief Sievers is a great simplifier,” King said. “He has the ability to cut through argument, debate and doubt to offer a solution that everybody can understand and agree upon.”

King also said it was a pleasure to work with Bazanos for the past 17 years. Bazanos is retiring after 38 years in fire service, 21 of which he spent with Port Orange Fire and Rescue.

Bazanos said that he feels blessed to wrap up his career with Sievers as his fire chief, calling him an “energizer bunny” who is always thinking of and presenting new ideas.

“He’s in line with what

everybody thinks a good fire chief should be,” Bazanos said.

Shanahan thanked both Bazanos and Sievers for their service, and said they are leaving behind a legacy of a united and strong Fire Department.

Former Seminole County Commissioner files to run in District 4 race

Michael McLean, of Daytona Beach, is the fourth candidate seeking to represent District 4 on the Volusia County Council.

The newest candidate so far in the Volusia County Council District 4 race is a former Seminole County Commissioner.

Michael McLean, of Daytona Beach, filed to run on Feb. 11, and he is the fourth person who has entered the race for the open seat in the 2022 elections. Incumbent District 4 Volusia County Councilwoman Heather Post is running for the atlarge seat. City Commissioners Troy Kent, Rob Littleton and Ormond Beach business owner Ken Smith are the other three candidates.

McLean — who owned an insurance firm for over 20 years and currently owns a governmental and business consulting firm called McLean Strategies LLC — served on the Seminole County Commission from 2006 to 2010. Prior to that, he was a commissioner for the city of Lake Mary from 2000 to 2006.

His decision to run for the Volusia County Council began with the failure of the half-cent sales tax.

In 2001, Seminole County passed a one-cent sales tax referendum with 72% approval, and Volusia’s failed referendum surprised him.

But what surprised him most, he said, was that it failed due to a lack of trust.

“I really think we need to re-install a sense of trust in Volusia County local government, where the voters feel that the people they’re putting

up there are best to look out for their interests,” McLean said. “They may not necessarily agree with every decision that’s made, but it concerns me when folks are talking about lack of trust in their elected officials, and I like to think that maybe I can do a little bit there.”

He hopes his experience as a previous county commissioner could be an asset to Volusia County due to his knowledge of managing large budgets as both a government official and business owner, and familiarity dealing with growth and development issues.

“Dealing with the developers, their goal is to make money and there’s nothing wrong with that,” McLean sad. “You just have to be sure that the development is smart, planned and appropriate.”

Volusia County to levy inmate fees To help defray costs associated with feeding and housing inmates, most counties in Florida — at least 50 out of 67 — charge jail inmates with booking or subsistence fees, and in some cases both. And now, Volusia County will be joining them.

Volusia County already charges inmates a medical co-pay: $8 for a sick call and $4 per medication. The county’s Corrections Division, which operates two jails, recommended the imposition of additional inmate fees. On Tuesday, Feb. 15, the Volusia County Council agreed, directing the county to start assessing a one-time administrative booking fee and a daily inmate subsistence fee as well. The council decided to set the booking fee at $30 and the daily subsistence fee at $5. Both fees are specifically provided for under Florida law.

Volusia County Corrections Director Mark Flowers told council members on Tuesday that there’s no way to know for sure how much money inmate booking and subsistence fees will generate. But he said any amount will help lessen the burden on taxpayers.

“Right now, what I can promise you is we’re not collecting anything,” Flowers said. “So something, in my opinion, is definitely better than nothing.”

Councilman Danny Robins called the fees reasonable, particularly in light of the cost to incarcerate inmates.

“It can become very costly,” Robins said. “I think you’re being more than reasonable.”

Florida statutes exempt subsistence fees for inmates who perform various jobs within the jail. Additionally, while money can be withdrawn from an inmate’s cash account at the jail to pay the fees, inmates will be provided a grievance process to present reasons why they shouldn’t be collected. Inmate fees that go unpaid for more than three years will be forgiven.

WRONG KIND OF ALCOHOL 4 p.m. — 400 block of Chelsea Place Avenue Resisting an officer without violence. A 30-year-old Ormond Beach man was arrested after he caused a disruption in his neighborhood by yelling and screaming he was going to kill people, causing his neighbors to come outside and call 911. The man also chased a delivery driver and threatened to steal his packages and van.

When the reporting officer arrived at the scene, another officer was already trying to speak with the disorderly man. The reporting officer spoke with the man’s father, who said the man was drunk, and shared that when he drinks beer “he is fine,” but that he becomes “belligerent” when he drinks hard liquor.

The man was yelling about his mother’s death, which according to his arrest report occurred a few years ago. Police report he turned toward the tailgate of his truck and slammed his head on it, falling down to the ground. Officers struggled to put him in handcuffs, as the man continued to pull his arms away, and one officer used his taser to do a dry stun to get him to comply.

He was taken to the hospital, and once medically cleared, transported to jail.

FEB. 14

VALENTINE’S DAY CELEBRATION 11:54 a.m. — Intersection of South Nova Road and Forest Lane DUI. Police arrested a 55-year-old Daytona Beach woman who was seen swerving within her lane as she drove, and when asked if she had been drinking, replied with, “Yeah, I had one. It’s Valentine’s Day.” According to her arrest report, the woman was coming from a local chain restaurant, and had leftovers on the front seat of her vehicle.

The reporting officer asked her to perform a series of field sobriety

exercises, and she agreed. She failed the exercises.

The woman was taken to jail.

FEB. 16

SECOND OFFENSE 2:17 p.m. — 200 block of Ormwood Drice Battery on a law enforcement officer. Police were called to a local condominium after the property manager saw a 39-year-old Daytona Beach man acting strange by the pool area. The man was waving his arms around, climbing bushes, throwing garbage around from the trash cans and dancing in the flower beds.

When officers arrived at the scene, the man jumped over the fence and ran southbound on the beach to the next condominium. Police found him and observed how he looked into the windows of vehicles; the man told police he was trying to find the keys to his car, according to his arrest report.

Officers were attempting to contact one of his family members over the phone when the man ran into traffic, crossed the street and entered a residence’s backyard. Police chased him and instructed hm to stop running multiple times before he was tased.

The man obtained one of the taser probes and tried to punch an officer with it in his hand, and in the process of being detained, kicked another officer in the leg. He was transported to the officer for medical clearance, during which he kicked a third officer in the head.

The doctor who assessed him believed he was having a psychotic episode as if he was under the influence of narcotics.

A family member told police the man had a similar incident occur to him last week with a neighboring police department. He was taken to jail.

Volusia County Schools Superintendent Scott Fritz’ future with the district will be up for discussion in a workshop on March 22, where School Board members will decide whether they wish to renew his contract, to be followed by an official vote later that evening at a meeting.

This decision was made after a two-hour discussion at the board’s meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 22, during which 12 members of the public made impassioned pleas both for and against extending the superintendent’s contract, as well as raised questions about the agenda item, stating the district had not properly noticed it. The extension of Fritz’s contract was listed as a discussion item, but School Board attorney Ted Doran informed them at the beginning of the conversation that a motion could be made and voted on, leading to School Board member Linda Cuthbert making a motion to renew Fritz’s contract for three more

years.

Fritz was hired in December 2019, and his contract will expire in December 2022, if not extended.

Volusia United Educators President Elizabeth Albert expressed her frustration with what she described as another example of how the district is moving forward with lastminute agenda changes and items being misrepresented to the public.

“The public looks at what’s put out, and we’re pulling the rug out from underneath them,” Albert said. “So it just is, again, a lack of transparency. It continues to break trust, and I just can’t imagine how you might think your employees and the other members of the public who are watching interpret these actions.”

School Board Chair Ruben Colon said that his wish for the agenda item was just for the board to discuss the extension of Fritz’s contract, not to take action that evening.

“I’ll take ownership of not having realized what this conversation would become, and so we did not advertise it to the public as an agenda item that we were going to be yes- or no-ing,” he said. “If that was the case, it would have been under board action items, which typically come with public comment.”

the board, and speakers came prepared to speak on whether the board should retain Fritz, or terminate his contract.

Some parents, several wearing Moms for Liberty apparel, said Fritz has ignored concerns brought forward by parents and gone around the School Board members in situations like the LGBTQ Health Awareness Week — where a board resolution to establish this in April 2021 died and was later brought back in a subsequent meeting as a district recognition — and the student mask policy established at the end of August 2021 when COVID-19 cases increased in schools. One speaker said Fritz verbally insulted parents when he said not vaccinating or masking your children was “bad parenting.”

Parent Rebecca Sarwi said Fritz’s support of a mask mandate was the last straw.

“I could no longer trust the school system or entrust my children to be in their care while in school, having disregard for the law and disregard for parents’ rights,” Sarwi said.

Others spoke in favor of Fritz and said he has worked hard to improve the district, citing improved graduation rates, an increasing number of students graduating with certifications, and the implementation of his strategic plan. One asked why the board was considering not extending his contract when Fritz was named one of 19 Superintendents to Watch by the National School Public Relations Association.

Food Brings Hope Founder Forough Hosseini said that Fritz was a “visionary” and that the board should give him the chance to move the district forward.

“Keep changing superintendents,” Hosseini said.

“Who do you think is going to

apply for a job that the superintendent keeps getting fired every two years? He is the man who’s going to take us to the next level.”

Prior to Fritz, the late Tom Russell served in the position from 2015 to 2019 until the board voted to fire him over communication concerns with the board. Margaret Smith was the superintendent before Russell. She resigned in 2015, two years before she planned to retire, after she clashed with a previous School Board member.

Cuthbert has been on board under the leadership of all three. She urged the board extend Fritz’s contract to allow him a chance to carry out his strategic plan. Though Fritz was hired in 2019, he has yet to serve an entire year as superintendent due to COVID-19 and a bout with cancer.

“One thing we need now more than anything is stability, and quite a few people said that,” Cuthbert said. “To have another changeover or to not give this man who’s worked so hard the reassurance that he has a job next December 3 is ludicrous.”

Some board members wanted to evaluate Fritz’s contract after his evaluation in July, but that brought the fear that the district would not have enough time to find another superintendent if the board decided against renewing his contract.

School Board member Jamie Haynes said she wasn’t comfortable in voting that evening, but said the district can’t discredit their employees’ thoughts of the working conditions.

“If you want to know where I stand tonight, I have to look at where are we going?” Haynes said. “Where have we been?

What is working and what is now, and I’m not prepared to extend his contract.”

House targets fatherhood ‘crisis’ As the House speaker decries a “fatherhood crisis” in the state, the House on Feb. 16, passed a wide-ranging measure that seeks to bolster fathers’ parenting skills.

The House unanimously passed the measure (HB 7065), which deals largely with the Department of Children and Families and proposes changes that would prioritize resources for fathers and help for current and former foster children.

A main part of the bill would direct the department to contract for the creation of the “Responsible Fatherhood Initiative.” The department would contract with an entity to launch a website and distribute other materials that would inform fathers on effective parenting.

House passes $105.3 billion spending plan

What would be a record $105.3 billion spending plan bolstered by federal stimulus money was approved Wednesday, Feb. 16, by the Florida House, helping set up negotiations with the Senate on a final budget for the 2022-2023 fiscal year.

The House voted 102-14 to approve the proposal (HB 5001), after Democrats objected to shifting $200 million away from 12 school districts that required students to wear masks last year amid the COVID-19 pandemic and called for more money to go to affordable housing and health care.

But with the state flush with cash from stimulus money and higher-than-expected tax collections, Republicans touted the spending plan.

The budget proposal,

among other things, would boost overall funding for public schools and includes a pay increase of 5.3% for state workers.

Rep. Ben Diamond, a St. Petersburg Democrat who voted against the plan, said the state has $10 billion available because of federal pandemic assistance and can do more to help people struggling to afford housing, along with increasing educational and health care services.

House passes 15-week abortion limit

Florida House members early Thursday morning, Feb. 17, passed a bill that would prohibit doctors from performing abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, one of the most hotly debated issues of the 2022 legislative session.

The Republican-dominated House approved the measure (HB 5) in a 78-39 vote along almost straight party lines after nearly six hours of debate.

Rep. Rene Plasencia, ROrlando, crossed party lines to vote against the measure, while Rep. James Bush, DMiami, voted for it.

The at-times tense floor session also saw a group of protesters removed from the House gallery for chanting in opposition to the bill.

The proposed 15-week limit on abortions resembles a Mississippi law that is under review by the U.S. Supreme Court — a case that is widely seen as a challenge to the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling on abortion rights.

“Every time unconstitutional bans are passed, they have been challenged in the courts. Legislating unpopular and unconstitutional bans on abortion is an irresponsible diversion from real life,” Rep. Yvonne Hinson, D-Gainesville, said. “Because real life is reality, not some figment of your imagination of what perfect life might look like.”

Donna was born in Batavia, NY, on February 5, 1954. She spent much of her childhood on her family’s dairy farms and amongst her large extended family.

She remembered those years as the happiest part of her childhood. As a teenager, Donna moved to central Florida where she graduated from Edgewater High School in 1972. She loved the ocean and being outdoors, and as a young woman was an active surfer.

She met her husband in Altamonte Springs, FL. They married in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, and later moved to Toms River, NJ, where they raised their daughter, Lisa.

Donna’s greatest passion in life was helping animals and children. For many years she worked as the office administrator for the Cattus Island County Park in Toms River. Eventually she left that job because she was constantly taking in stray

animals (including a den of baby raccoons). She then found her life’s work assisting troubled teenagers as a paraprofessional teacher’s aide.

Donna loved taking care of others, and she truly shone at her favorite occupation; as a mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her mother, Genevieve Bower, brother Donald Galbraith and sisterin-law Linda Galbraith, her husband Michael Spaventa, daughter Lisa Wilson and son-in-law Brett Wilson, three beautiful grandchildren who were the light of her life, and many beloved cousins throughout Florida and Upstate New York.

She will be fiercely missed.

A memorial service will be held February 24th at 11:00am at Rodeo Lakes 125 Rodeo Rd, Ormond Beach, FL 32174.

LETTERS Troy Kent’s claims and proposals Dear Editor: As a longtime supporter of off beach parking, and as a member of the citizens group that worked with the Trust for Public Lands to make the Ormond Beach Andy Romano Beachfront Park happen, I must take issue with claims by Zone 2 City Commissioner Troy Kent that he was heavily involved with the creation of our beachfront park. Some history, after years of inaction from our city, the people of Ormond took the bull by the horns and voted to raise their taxes to get a park. Mr. Kent was strongly silent in his support for this project. It is true that once the people voted for the park, the city did take over and name and develop the park as they wanted to.

I also want to question Mr. Kent’s proposal to open up all the beach ramps to solve our beach access problem. This is something he’s been pushing for a long time and I just don’t think he ever goes to the beach to see that most of the year, especially the busy summer months, only four-wheel drive vehicles can drive onto the soft sand. What is the point of opening

beach ramps when you cannot drive onto the beach? I challenge Mr. Kent and anyone else who supports his proposal to wait until July and try driving two-wheel drive only from Milsap ramp to Granada on the beach. Give us a notice and have the Observer’s photographer there to witness what will happen.

Editor’s note: Commissioner Troy Kent asked to respond to Charles Wilkes letter. Here is his response: “Wilkes says that he was part of a citizen group that worked with the Trust for Public Lands. I ask, what group was that? I, too, worked with a citizen group to make this beachfront park happen. It is called the Ormond Beach City Commission.

I held ‘Coffee with Commissioner Kent’ every month to hear from my constituents about this wonderful idea. I personally met with the Trust for Public Lands on several occasions and helped them partner with the city so we could have the crown jewel of all beachfront parks in the state.

“I advocated for the city to buy the old Days Inn and create a beachfront park. I fished with Andy Romano weekly and am proud to say that Andy became one of my closest friends. I brought up the naming of the park after him. My

fingerprints are all over the park’s design, from the surfboard racks, family-style restrooms, barbecue grills, playground and splash pad.

“I, too, want more off-beach parking, but let’s face it, prices for land on the beachfront are currently astronomical. We already have the best parking area: on the beach, but when the ramps are closed, we are shut off from our beach.

Does the sand get soft in July? Yes! Should four-wheel drive vehicles be allowed to access the beach when the sand is soft? Again, I say yes. We can disagree on issues, but please don’t lie about my hard work and years of dedication to making our community better.”

Free will for women is dead Dear Editor: If you have been following what’s happening in the Florida Legislature this past week and listening to the governor’s “campaign” press conferences, then you know that your elected officials have trumped the American Medical Association’s Code of Medical Ethics by legislating what is best for women’s health.

This isn’t about whether or not you believe in abortion. It’s about other people (mostly men) determining that women, in consultation with a licensed healthcare professional, no longer have the ability to establish

the most appropriate healthcare and mental health options for themselves.

Now that we’ve been stripped of that choice, what’s next? Perhaps politicians will decide to legislate that women can no longer attend college or that women don’t have the right to vote. Maybe bureaucrats will dictate how women can dress or who women can love.

Maybe women won’t be able to have a bank account or a credit card in their name without their husband’s approval. Sound far-fetched?

Brush up on your history lessons, please. History is repeating itself.

Soon, we’ll all be back in the kitchen, barefoot, pregnant, and ironing the men’s shirts, while the pot of stew is simmering on the stove.

Enough is enough. It’s no longer about your political affiliation. It is about taking away women’s rights and civil liberties. Please vote these people out of office before they take back the rights that you believe are yours as part of our free country.

BANK OF AMERICA DONATES $45,000 TO SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK Bank of America announced on Friday, Feb. 18, that it donated $45,000 to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, a dollar figure that amounts to 180,000 meals, in support of the food bank’s mission to address food insecurity in the region.

A press release states that, in Central Florida, Feeding America projects that 13.8%, or one in seven people, and 20.1%, or one in five children, live in households

that were potentially food insecure in 2021. Earlier this year, Bank of America announced it would make a $100 donation to local hunger relief organizations and food banks for each employee in Orlando who received a COVID-19 booster shot or vaccine who also notified the bank before the end of January.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Bank of America has donated over $353,000 in funding to Second Harvest Food Bank.

It started with one dog.

Her name was Sophie, a husky quarantined at the Southeast Volusia Humane Society and slated to be euthanized the following day.

Kathy Blackman walked into the shelter determined to provide them with healthy pet food, and walked out with Sophie. In 2008, aware of the dire situation faced by many animals, she founded the Sophie’s Circle dog rescue.

Stepdaughter Madeline Tyser remembers when she was a senior in high school and the nonprofit was just getting started. Blackman was running the business out of her house with a couple of volunteers.

Tyser would model her t-shirts.

“It’s so cool to see how it’s grown,” she said. “It’s a known name in the community. Everyone knows what Sophie’s Circle is and what is does.

It’s really special.”

The annual Rainbow Bridge Walk is one of many events held to support the nonprofit organization in their efforts to help homeless and

abused animals. Vendors, volunteers and musicians all participate knowing that their efforts and proceeds go entirely to the rescue.

A total of 25 vendors and approximately 300 supporters attended the seventh-annual event. Blackman said this had been the most successful yet with 10 sponsors and $9,500 raised.

“The feedback has been great,” Blackman said.

Professional photographer Lisa Waldman set up a cloud-like backdrop at the event and invited attendees to get their portraits taken with their pets. She did not start rescuing until she got involved with Sophie’s Circle, and now has two dogs from the nonprofit.

“I do a lot of the photos for their website because they are fosterbased and don’t have a shelter to go to,” she said. “I love it. It’s for a good cause.”

Harry Cepura was manning his neighbor Nancy Keck’s Seaside Wraps booth while she sang and played guitar with the band, Tie-Dye Road. He was there to participate in the Granada bridge walk to honor his deceased dogs.

“My wife and I are walking with our sheltie Murphy,” said Cepura, teary-eyed. “We are walking for Alfie and Molly, our two shelties we lost last year. They were 16 years old.”

Walkers honor the pets they’ve lost by walking over the Granada bridge at Sophie’s Circle seventh-annual Rainbow Bridge Walk.

Tutus on a ‘Twosday’ Pine Trail highlights all-2’s date with a flash mob

What better way to celebrate “Twosday” than with a bunch of tutus and twins?

t 2:22 p.m. on Feb. 22, Pine Trail Elementary students and staff celebrated the rare date of all 2’s with a special flash mob dance party.

Sporting tutus, paired up with a “twin,” or both, the “Twosday” celebration was a fun way to mark the occasion, and one Principal Tami Fisher said she hopes the students will remember as they grow up.

From performing their organized dance moves before their school peers, to dancing the “Macarena” side-by-side with their “Twosday” twins, the students were all smiles as dismissal approached.

‘Proud of my guys’ Buccaneers’ bid for regional semifinals dashed in 3-point loss

uccaneer fans packed the Vince Carter Athletic Center on Feb. 17 as Mainland’s boys basketball team took on Tallahassee Godby in the Region 1-5A quarterfinals.

Mainland fell just short of advancing to the next round of the FHSAA playoffs, losing in the final seconds to the Cougars, 49-46.

The Bucs ended their season at 15-10. Godby (22-5) advanced to the region semifinals against Jacksonville Riverside.

“I am proud of my guys,” said Mainland coach Joe Giddens, who returned to his alma mater in 2017 and ended the season with a 90-43 record.

“They played hard tonight.

They made some young mistakes, but next year, they’ll know. We’ll take two to three weeks off and get right back in the gym.”

Team captain Nick Antoine led the Bucs with 19 points in his final basketball game with

his Mainland teammates.

Godby shooting guard Tajden Davis had 18 points and 11 rebounds.

The Bucs will be losing three seniors this year — Antoine, Jonathan Campbell and Jordan Porter. The remainder of his team will return next season.

Campbell, a four-sport athlete, heads off to run track and play baseball for the Bucs.

Even though his basketball career has ended, he is looking forward to helping the Bucs’ younger players who will be returning next year.

“I’ll be giving them life tips,” he said. “Never take it for granted, and leave your heart out on the court. It’s about being a leader, helping them keep their head on and not losing their cool.”

The Mainland Buccaneers baseball team lost 17-2 to the Matanzas Pirates in their season opener on Tuesday, Feb. 22.

Mainland’s pitcher Anthony Chirco and short stop Jonathan Campbell scored one run each. Due to the lack of pre-season games, coach A. J. Mallory put three pitchers to the test during the opener — Chirco, second baseman Ty Moak and Joey Scudiero.

“Rough start, yes,” he said. “We did not have any pre-season games so I’m not upset. We are learning.

Like I told them, this is new Mainland baseball. They have to get used to playing hard which will turn into us winning. I expect us to get better day-by-day.”

Mallory graduated from BethuneCookman University in 2007 with

a degree in public relations. Before becoming Mainland’s head coach last season, he worked for the NewsJournal Center, the Daytona Beach HOG and the indoor arena football team, the Daytona Beach Thunder.

At the end of the game, Mallory advised his players to take it one game at a time.

“Every game is the game,” he said.

“We have to play like it’s the game.

Forget all the others. We take care of that one. We can’t change this one today.”

Win or lose, Buccaneers always prep the field after the game and Jonathan Campbell always has a smile on his face.

“I was very impressed by the whole operation... I just turned 78 years old and they made everything so easy!!!”

While the major leagues are in a lockout, baseball season has begun in Volusia County.

Seabreeze lost its opener, 8-1, at Spruce Creek on Feb. 21. The Sandcrabs were back in action Feb. 23 in a home game against DeLand. They play at Father Lopez on March 1 and then host the Green Wave on March 3.

Father Lopez opens at Deltona on Thursday Feb. 24 and then plays it home opener the next day against Mount Dora Christian Academy. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Mainland, which gave up 12 runs in the third inning of 17-1 loss to Matanzas on Feb. 22, hosts Taylor on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 4:30 p.m.

Zombieland: Mainland wrestling revived

Three Sandcrab wrestlers win district titles

When Matt Lawrence re-started the program five years ago, wrestling was a distant memory at Mainland High School.

It hasn’t been easy resurrecting a sport from the dead. Five years ago, the Bucs had to roll out mats from the 1990s. They’re still using them.

“They’re not in great shape,” Lawrence said. “They weren’t stored properly. But we make do.”

Indeed. Piece by piece, Lawrence is putting Mainland wrestling back on the map.

Last year, the Bucs had three regional qualifiers. On Feb. 16 at the District 4-2A tournament at Matanzas High School, Mainland qualified nine of 10 wrestlers for the regional meet Feb. 25-26 in Tallahassee.

The girls team, meanwhile, is establishing itself as one of the better programs in the region in the FHSAA’s first year sanctioning the sport for girls.

Three Mainland girls qualified for the state championships at the Region 1 tournament Feb. 19 in Panama City, led by region champ Jah’Mya Hill.

Hill won the 155-pound title. The junior improved to 24-5 on the season with a pin in the championship match against West Port’s Jayden Dodge.

Hill will be joined in Kissimmee March 3-5 by Abby Couillard (27-10),

Seabreeze finished second at the District 6-1A wrestling tournament Feb. 16 in Mount Dora, qualifying nine wrestlers for the regional in Palm Bay. Three Sandcrabs won district championships: Freshman William Sites (16-10) at 106 pounds; sophomore Hayden Herndon (17-7) at 145 pounds; and junior Pedro Sierra Bonilla (27-7) at 220 pounds.

The Sandcrabs also had three runners-up in junior Wyatt Sites (22-11) at 126 pounds, senior Joseph Kent (27-8) at 132 pounds and junior Jackson Pruett (4-6) at 195 pounds.

Brogan Kelly (170 pounds), River Gray (113 pounds) and Aiden Hedge (152 pounds) all placed fourth.

Wrestling may never reach the level of football or basketball at Mainland, but a wrestling banner or two might be joining those other sports soon at the Vince Carter Athletic Center.

Chandler takes first in 800 meters Seabreeze participated in the Flagler Pinnacle Preseason Classic track and field meet at Flagler Palm Coast. Ella Chandler had a solid day, winning the girls 800 with a time of 2:20.44 and finishing second in the 600 in 1:43.39.
