City staff members weighed in on the topic during the second and final OB Life: Westward Focus community workshop, held at Calvary Christian Church on Thursday, Dec. 2. With a physical attendance of 28 people and 103 online, according to the city, the workshop — modeled after the city’s 2018 civic engagement series — outlined the city’s water and sewer service agreement with Daytona Beach, future improvements to Leisure Services on the west side of the city and how Avalon Park will impact fire and police.

Ormond Beach to set new zone boundaries

The Ormond Beach Police Department was the recipient of an almost $12,000 donation by a Portuguese businessman and former consul of Portugal to Florida to help the department acquire and train a new K-9 after the recent death of K-9 Kane.

Caesar DePaço, who is also the founder and CEO of Summit Nutritionals International Inc. in New Jersey, has a history of supporting K-9 units in law enforcement, according to his webpage.

School Board member a ‘star’ Volusia County School Board member Linda Cuthbert was among two statewide school district leaders in Florida recognized for their leadership by the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations at the 76th-annual joint conference of Florida School Boards Association and Florida Association of District School Superintendents on Dec. 1.

Cuthbert, a past chair of the School Board, received the “2021 Star: School Board Member of the Year” recognition because of her history with the FUTURES Foundation, according to a press release.

“Volusia County has been extremely fortunate to have Ms. Cuthbert and her tireless leadership and talent for more than thirty years as an educator and now school board member,” said Heather Bond Vargas, FUTURES Foundation board President, in her recommendation letter.

“She is a star and the world should know it!”

In the last 10 years, Ormond Beach’s population has grown by a little under 5,000, and local officials are deciding how these new voters should be split among their zones.

In 2010, according to a city memo, population totaled 38,139. Population totaled 43,080 in the 2020 census, which marks an increase of 13% or 4,941 people, and an annual average growth rate of 1.3%. The most growth occurred in Zones 1 and 3, both of which include neighborhoods west of I-95.

With a target population for each commission zone of 10,770, the City Commissioners decided at their workshop on Tuesday, Dec. 7, that

an option with the least amount of change for the majority of the voters was the way to go.

The commissioners decided on “Option 6,” which shifted 479 residents living between Airport Road and the Tomoka River from Zone 3 to Zone 1, as well as 999 people living between Sanchez and Domicilio avenues.

“It has the fewest number of changes,” Commissioner Dwight Selby said. “It impacts the fewest number of zones. ... It respects geography, and I think it would be very effective.”

Commissioner Troy Kent pointed out that his zone — which saw

the least amount of growth in the last decade — likely wouldn’t grow much in the next 10 years. Yet, under “Option 6,” his zone would be one of the lowest in population count, which could trigger major changes in the next redistricting process, as Zones 1 and 3 continue to grow.

“I just think it’s probably the wisest choice,” Kent said.

Commissioners agreed to shift a section of North Beach Street (from Granada up to Cameo Circle) to Zone 2, adding 103 residents. The commission will review a resolution of intent to adopt the new boundaries at its Jan. 4. The first reading of the ordinance will occur on Feb. 15.

“We were just throwing different ideas out there, and this one stuck. We’re going to continue to do this event for many years to come.”

With shopping carts — and the Ormond Beach Police Department’s giant Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle — decorated with tinsel and balloons lined the outside of the Walmart at 1521 W. Granada Blvd. on Saturday, Dec. 4, shoppers exiting the supermarket stopped and stared, with some of the more curious onlookers asking what was about to transpire.

But when the pink Astro Skate bus arrived, preceded by several patrol vehicles and their sirens, the answer became clear: It was time for the fifth-annual Shop with a Cop. Since 2017, the Ormond Beach Police Department has partnered with Walmart to provide local kids, chosen by their schools, with a special holiday shopping spree. Per a grant provided by Walmart, each child gets $100 to spend in the store.

A total of 25 children participated this year, and for Ormond Beach Police Chief Jesse Godfrey, every year marks a more rewarding experience than the last.

“Every kid I’ve had for the last five years has never once put themselves first,” Godfrey said. “They always put their family members first, as far as what gift they’re going to give.

This year was even more rewarding, because not only did this young lady that I had buy for her entire family, she actually thought of one of her teachers.”

The experience made Aydin Bennett, a fifth grader partnered with Capt. Chris Roos, feel special, said Aydin’s grandmother, Patty Black.

Aydin had a tough year in 2020 with his family life, and while his grandmother said that has been resolved, being able to see him have a positive experience with law enforcement made her emotional.

“I’m so proud,” Black said. “Just

Walmart store manager Mark Rogers said the event is one of the best ways to reach local children and provide them with a positive law enforcement experience. This is the 15th year he’s been part of the event, which has taken place at different stores where he’s worked over the years.

“For the most part, it just takes people who care, and it’s something I believe is a great benefit of working for Walmart, because Walmart

wants to do things for the community,” he said.

Shop with a Cop is one of the ways OBPD works to connect with the community, and Godfrey said there’s a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes. Each officer that participated volunteered for the assignment, and to him, that shows their dedication to the city.

“I’ve never seen it like this before,” Godfrey said. “To include, we have the staffing shortages that we talked about, so for them to come out despite all that, again that moves me too — my own employees. I’m very proud of them, and I’m moved by what they do and how they represent the city and the department.”

“The Avalon Daytona project will move forward,” Finley said. “The agreement that we have provides that in the event Ormond Beach is unable or unwilling to serve as the utility provider, Daytona Beach will serve as the utility provider.”

result of a 2002 legal dispute after 2,890 acres owned by Consolidated Tomoka Land Company, Inc. was annexed into the city of Daytona Beach. Per the agreement, Ormond Beach will provide Daytona with utilities at a wholesale rate, and Daytona will serve as the retail provider.

Daytona Beach will be responsible for paying water impact fees equivalent to Ormond Beach’s, as well as finance any improvements needed to Ormond Beach’s water transmission system that are not covered by impact fees.

Ormond Beach is also beginning its process to update its consumptive use permit from the St. Johns River Water Management District.

The permit dictates how much water Ormond is able to withdraw from the state’s aquifer.

“That permit is set to expire I think in 2024,” Finley said. “We knew that with the importance of this project, the magnitude of this project, it was important for us to get a head start on that.”

MORE PEOPLE, MORE PUBLIC SAFETY RESOURCES NEEDED

The area west of I-95 in Ormond Beach falls within Ormond Beach Police’s patrol zone 7, which experienced 2,950 calls for service from January to mid-November of this year. In comparison, citywide, OBPD reported 78,273 calls for service for the same time period.

Godfrey said that with the construction of Avalon Park, his department is planning to add more officers and remap patrol zones based on calls for service. OBPD is also anticipating more traffic-related incidents, though numbers currently are not alarming. From January to midNovember, there have been 47 crashes from Breakaway Trails to the I-95 interchange, the majority of which didn’t result in injuries.

And with more people moving into the area as a result of the project, Ormond Beach Fire Chief Richard Sievers said the proposed station to be built within Avalon Park will be a benefit to the community. Currently, Fire Station 94 at 2301 Airport Road — the city’s western station — has one of the lowest call volumes in the city. Over the last five years, Sievers said it has averaged about 1,200 calls every year.

During the Q+A portion of the workshop, one resident asked if the city is looking to increase salaries for first responders. City Manager Joyce Shanahan said agreement negotiations with the city’s collective bargaining units are beginning soon.

“We are trying our best to keep morale up and continue to respect and honor those that protect and serve our community, and I’m sure we’ll be able to come to an agreement that is acceptable to everyone,” she said.

Florida gas prices are slowly adjusting to the recent crude oil price plunge. Sunday’s state average has slipped to $3.30 per gallon, after declining 4 cents during the past week. That downward trend is likely to continue this week, unless oil prices suddenly rebound.

Crude oil prices plummeted after Thanksgiving, on concerns about how the omicron variant could impact global fuel demand.

The price of US crude dropped 13% after Thanksgiving and remained down all last week. Friday’s closing price of $66.26 per barrel is 15% below the price on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

It’s also 21% below the 2021 high of $84.15/b - which was recorded nearly four weeks ago.

House Democrats want the state’s next spending plan to be more “people-centered” as Gov. Ron DeSantis prepares to send a full budget proposal to the Legislature.

Democrats said during a conference call Tuesday that they expect the Republican-controlled Legislature during the 2022 session to produce a “generous” budget because it will be an election year. But they said working-class Floridians will see few direct benefits without increased funding for affordable housing, nursing and education, along with other changes to address increasing property insurance rates and revamp a tax structure that prioritizes corporations.

Rep. Anna Eskamani, D-Orlando, said the focus of the new 20222023 budget, which is expected to total about $100 billion, should be on benefiting a greater number of Floridians.

“Folks called Florida a low tax state. Unfortunately, it’s also a low benefit state, meaning that the Floridians who pay much of their income to taxes, they don’t see the improvements in affordable housing, they don’t see the access to social safety nets, health care,” Eskamani said. “They don’t see action on climate change. They don’t see action on mental health or substanceabuse prevention or paying teachers better. So, we want to make sure that not only do we fight for a more equitable tax system, so that the money that comes into our coffers from those everyday people actually goes right back to them.”

DeSantis is expected this week to release his budget proposal, which will serve as a starting point as lawmakers negotiate a final spending plan during the session that starts Jan. 11.

The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Criminal and Civil Justice on Wednesday, Dec. 1, unanimously approved a measure (SB 342) to expand the clearing of the records. The bill faces one more committee before heading to the Senate floor for a full vote. Gov. Ron DeSantis vetoed a similar proposal passed by state lawmakers during the 2021 legislative session this spring. The revamped version of the bill, intended for consideration during the session that begins Jan. 11, includes a tweak aimed at garnering the governor’s support, according to bill sponsor Keith Perry, R-Gainesville.

“The caveat is we’ve added in that forcible felonies are not allowed in this, and that is the difference between this bill and last year’s bill,” Perry, chairman of the subcommittee, told the panel Wednesday. Perry said he is confident that lawmakers will approve the measure and that DeSantis will support it because the revised bill addresses the governor’s objections.

The pandemic entrepreneurs Locals become business owners as COVID-19 shifts the economy JONATHAN SIMMONS NEWS EDITOR

Dr. Michael Lynch’s field isn’t especially social-distance friendly: Lynch is a physical therapist.

But when the pandemic hit and appointments plummeted at the home health company he worked for, Lynch — aware that some patients were avoiding physical therapy because they were concerned about COVID-19 exposure — believed he could reassure them.

And he has, creating a new business called Mobile Therapy Services that offers offering in-home physical therapy. He wears an N-95 mask, double-masks, and in some cases adds a face shield.

Some patients prefer to see him take a COVID test in front of them and then wait until it comes back negative before he enters their home.

“I probably get COVID tested, on an average week, three to five times, sometimes twice in one day,” he said.

“Rapid tests — lots of them.”

But success has followed. “One patient turned into two, and two turned into 10, and it’s been going strong ever since,” he said.

Lynch, an Ormond-by-the-Sea resident, serves Flagler County and Volusia County. That’s sometimes meant long days, with 100-some miles of driving and 10-12 patients.

But, he said, “I’m definitely in a better position than a lot of business people, because I can be mobile.”

NEW BUSINESS OWNERS

Lynch isn’t alone: Many locals who lost regular work or found their lives in other ways upended during the pandemic have reacted by forming their own small businesses.

City government business tax receipt records bear this out.

Palm Coast has seen notable increases — about a 25% uptick from 2019 to 2020, then about a 75% increase from 2020 to 2021 — while Ormond’s have held about steady with pre-pandemic numbers.

Although people haven’t been returning to conventional work at the rate expected since pandemic stimulus payments ended, there are many ways for workers who’ve lost their jobs to make up the income, said Greg Blosé, president and CEO of the Palm Coast-Flagler Regional Chamber of Commerce.

“There are different, alternative types of work for you to continue to earn the type of living that you did before the pandemic,” he said.

Some people have turned to Uber, DoorDash, and other gig work, while others go out on their own, he said.

“A lot of these super small businesses — one-employee deals,” Blosé said.

A PIVOT

Elizabeth Owens’ path fits that pattern. She’d been working at the Palm Coast Walmart, and her husband had worked for Coca Cola, when the pandemic hit.

His hours were reduced. She was seeing people laid off. Then, last November, she saw an ad for an ice cream truck.

“And I was like, ‘I want this — I need this,’” she said.

The family renovated the truck in their driveway until spring — redoing the floors, painting it, adding an extra freezer.

“Totally did a 360 on it, and we started taking it out,” she said.

Owens usually starts in Palm Coast with her husband, then works her way north selling ice cream until she gets toward St. Augustine, where she’s been storing the truck.

If not for the pandemic, she said, she probably wouldn’t have started her own business. Now, she’s looking into getting two more trucks by next summer.

Her children, ages 9 and 5, have learned something, too. “It’s taught my kids about entrepreneurial business,” she said.

Her 9-year-old son has been wanting to start his own business selling light-up toys like light wands.

“He came to us with a whole business plan,” she said.

DINING DURING COVID

COVID-19 has made the past year and a half difficult for restaurants.

But in the midst of the pandemic, Mike Wehde and his family, who already own the Waffle Cone ice cream shop in Flagler Beach, decided to create a new one.

“We had a lot of walk-up traffic, so about a year into the pandemic, my son from San Francisco moved back,” Mike Wehde said. “His strategy, working with us, was to create another takeout place: outdoor seating, outside, in the safe air. ... Holly and I were very entrepreneurial, so why not make the most of a pandemic?”

And so, about half a year ago, the family created the Sunshine Crepes & Bubble Bar in Flagler Beach.

Wehde and his wife, Holly, own the business, and their sons, Dillon and Dakota, are general managers.

Dillon Wehde had been a photographer shooting weddings and product photography in San Francisco when the pandemic cut back his wedding photography work, he said.

So Dillon came back to Flagler County, where he’d grown up, and got to work with his family renovating the shopfront that would become Sunshine Crepes.

Locals were welcoming, he said.

just walk in and say, ‘Are you guys open yet? We’re so excited!’” he said.

CHALLENGES

The uncertainties of the pandemic can make business planning tough.

For instance, Lynch just bought a specialized laser for use in his therapy practice — a major expense.

“It’s a huge risk doing that, because now we have a new [COVID-19] variant that might shut everything down again,” he said. “It’s a nerve-wracking time to invest in your business.”

Owens saw delays getting paperwork approved, and found it tough to schedule a health inspector to inspect the ice cream truck.

The Wehdes have had trouble finding workers and have been fighting supply chain issues.

Dru Williams opened his business during the pandemic, but not because of it.

Like Owens and the Wehdes, though, his business is social-distance friendly, and he was able to move forward with it despite the upheaval caused in the economy by COVID-19.

Williams had started planning to form a small business offering boat charters and boat, jet ski and paddle board rentals after he and his wife, Kelly, decided to move to Palm Coast from South Carolina to take care of Kelly’s mother, who has Alzheimer’s.

The move from Charleston meant leaving his position at a boat dealership there and finding new work.

He bought some boats before he

But it worked out for his new business, Crescent WaterSports.

“Being on a boat is about as much social distancing as you can do, and with everything shutting down, I think it was a relief for a lot of people to get out on the water and see the dolphins and the manatees and not have to worry about wearing a mask inside, and who you’re going to offend,” he said.

He has regulars who book every three weeks, which helped the fledgling business in its first few months.

“And then when summer hit … our boat rental business started doing extremely well.,” Williams said.

The Wehdes have also noticed that people are eager to get out in the open air with friends and family.

“People are so happy to get out and eat outside,” Mike Wehde said. “It’s been beautiful weather, and it creates a lot of smiles.”

GRANT FOR HOMES On Friday, Dec. 3, Homes Bring Hope announced that JPMorgan Chase made a $100,000 grant in support of the nonprofit agency’s mission.

According to a press release, Homes Bring Hope — founded

by Forough Hosseini, senior vice president of ICI Homes and longtime philanthropist — aims to “help people break the cycle of generational poverty through homeownership and home equity.”

“It is wonderful to have the support of JPMorgan Chase in our efforts to help people transition from paying rent to actually owning a home and building equity, which economists agree is a major factor in triumphing over poverty,” Hosseini said. “This grant will enable us to help as many as 15 families who don’t qualify for a mortgage amount paralleling the total cost of the house they want to buy. It will transform lives. It will have a major effect on our community and set the stage

Coast Guard Station in Ponce Inlet, which covers the waters up through St. Augustine, and is responsible for a 28-member crew. He is rated as boatswain’s mate, specializing in the operation and command of large ships and small boats to execute the Coast Guard’s primary missions of search and rescue, as well as federal law enforcement on local waters.

Previously, Alley has received three Coast Guard Commendation medals, two Coast Guard Achievement medals, two commandant’s letter of accommodations, among other personal and service awards.

He is a permanent cutterman with nine years of sea time.

Alley has two children, Jackson and Jaycee, and all attend Salty Church. Alley also recently got engaged to Caley Falknor Hayes, of Ormond Beach. The two plan to marry at Bailey Riverbridge Gardens.

APPLIANCES STOLEN 8:39 a.m. — 200 block of Cypress Trail Drive Burglary. Police responded to a subdivision under construction after several appliances were stolen from a home.

According to the incident report, the building company’s superintendent called in the theft and explained that the applianced had been delivered a few days prior and left in the garage because the home was locked. The garage was missing one of the doors due to a mistake, the report states.

The superintendent told police that when he arrived at the home, a cooktop and vent hood had been stolen, valued at $596. A neighbor told the superintendent that he spotted a “lifted black Ford F-350 with a large Trump flag and American flag in the bed” stopped in front of the home the night before. The neighbor said they sped away as soon as they were spotted, and described the truck as “junky,” according to the police report.

PROWLING WITH NO SHOES 1:34 a.m. — Intersection of Hand Avenue and Harbour Lights Drive Loitering or prowling. A 37-year-old Ormond Beach was arrested after he was seen walking in the yard of a residence near a parked vehicle.

man to stop after he activated the lights on his patrol car. The officer noticed the man had a woodenhandled flat-bladed tool in his hand, similar to a small chisel, and the object was secured. The man had socks on, but no shoes, and the officer asked him what he was doing in the neighborhood. The man replied that he had lost his keys and was out looking for them, and that his car was parked down the street.

The officer pointed out that it was very late in the night, and the man said he drank a lot of coffee and didn’t realize what time it was.

The man later changed his story and said that his friend had his car, but couldn’t provide proof that he’d been in contact with this friend. He was taken to the police department, and once there, made “nonsensical statements and had conversations

with people who were not there,” the report details.

MORE ANTISEMITIC GRAFFITI FOUND 8:41 a.m. — First block of West Granada Boulevard Vandalism. The investigation into antisemitic graffiti and decals appearing in various spots in the city continued as more stickers were located on businesses in the downtown district.

According to a police report, the decals were found on windows and signs. A resident who was scraping stickers off herself flagged police down and reported other areas in the nearby park that were vandalized in the same way. Stickers were also located in the area of North Nova Road and Wilmette Avenue.

Due to the pandemic, most of the world can agree that 2020 was a rough year. But for Fletcher’s Irish Pub owner Bill Fletcher, it was way better than 2019.

After a routine scan, in the summer of 2019, Fletcher received the news that he had tumors lining his abdomen, just two weeks before he was planning to leave on a family trip to Ireland. Maybe he could wait until after the trip to start cancer treatment?

The doctor said no. The trip was canceled.

Fletcher began aggressive chemotherapy treatment for about 10 weeks but kept it quiet around the community.

THE INAUGURAL EVENT

When he introduced the concept of a live-shaving event to raise money for childhood cancer patients, eight of his loyal customers agreed to do it, too. The initial goal for 2020’s Shave for the Brave was to raise $10,000, and the total swelled to $15,000. Fletcher asked his children for ideas of how to spend the money, and they suggested something entertaining to do while in the hospital, such as Nintendo Switch game systems and iPads, so that’s what they did.

THIS YEAR’S EXPANSION

Whereas the inaugural Shave for the Brave relied on fundraising teams only, this year, business sponsors lined up to support the cause. As of Dec. 3, eight teams of four have already raised $26,000, and

there are 43 business sponsors. Fletcher is confident the total will exceed $30,000.

“It makes me feel proud, very humbled,” he said.

The main attraction — the live shaving — will begin at 2:30 p.m. and end around 5:30 p.m. Approximately 40 people will be getting shaved by a professional local barber, and anyone is welcome to shave the day of the event, for a $100 donation.

All proceeds raised will go to Volusia and Flagler families with children fighting cancer, or to support other Live Like Cameron events.

“We were just throwing different ideas out there, and this one stuck,” Fletcher said of Shave for the Brave. “We’re going to continue to do this event for many years to come.”

One day in Indianapolis, he enjoyed his favorite shrimp cocktail, or, as he would say, his “final meal,” before his last surgery in October 2019.

Since then, Fletcher said he has lived a healthy lifestyle and continues to run his pub, but he felt a deep desire to help others in similar situations. He knew a Palm Coast family, the Fullings, who had a foundation called Live Like Cameron, to honor the memory of their son, and he asked if he could put on a fundraiser to help them. Fletcher’s first Shave for the Brave event took place a year ago; the secondannual event is set for Dec. 12.

aroline Chanfrau is meticulous with her weekly schedule.

She has to be.

The 17-year-old dancer with the European School of Performing Arts in Ormond Beach rarely has a moment to spare. She dances five nights a week, plus all-day Saturday at the school, on top of being student body president at Father Lopez Catholic High School and completing all her regular school work in a way that has her on track to graduating at the top of her class.

And this weekend at the Peabody Auditorium, the Ormond Beach resident will star as the sugar plum fairy in the European School’s production of “The Nutcracker.”

“Being able to have a part like this is really special because it’s challenging me in a lot of ways,” Chanfrau said. “I haven’t really danced like this before. I’ve done partnering

and I’ve done solo work, but having to do back to back to back nonstop stuff, is definitely a challenge, but it’s really fun.”

Chanfrau has been dancing with the European School since she was 2 years old. Her older sister danced at the school first, and Chanfrau recalls watching her and wanting to follow in her footsteps.

And she did.

Now, 15 years later, her chapter with the European School is coming to a close as she experiences her last year. Despite Chanfrau’s intense schedule, she is still one of the best dancers in the studio, said Michelle Boutros, artistic director at the European School.

“She loves what she does and you could see that even from how she walks into the studio,” Boutros said. “… It’s like home for her.”

BORN TO BE A LEADER

Dancing has always been an integral part of Chanfrau’s life — a creative outlet that gives her an escape. It’s therapeutic, she said. When she’s dancing, she doesn’t have to worry about her other responsibilities.

“Having to be here six days a week really makes me try and manage my time other places and makes me really focus on what I want,” she said. “It’s a really big commitment, so I have to be sure it’s something I like doing.”

But once Chanfrau decides she wants to do something, she commits. She joined the swim team in her sophomore year, and, each fall since, she’s had practice straight after school before coming to the dance studio for a few more hours of hard work. Though swimming is not her favorite activity, she still gave it her maximum effort. This fall, she was captain of her swim team.

has always been really important in my family, and I’m very fortunate to go to a school like Father Lopez, so it’s very important to me to take advantage of everything that’s around me,” Chanfrau said.

She’s always been like this, said Boutros. Though she recently became the artistic director for the European School, Boutros taught at the studio three years ago, and Chanfrau’s work ethic has remained steady.

“She was born to be a leader, and so I’m not surprised at her progress, and, in a way, it’s almost an expectation for her,” Boutros said. “She puts it on herself, and she meets it.”

Chanfrau takes dance seriously, her director continued, and goes out of her way to help others in and out of the studio. A few years ago, Chanfrau and a friend began volunteering her time to teach a monthly dance class at Hope Place, a homeless shelter for families in Daytona Beach. It’s an experience Chanfrau said gave her a new appreciation for dance.

“Whenever I would go in there, it broke my heart,” Chanfrau said. “They would be so excited about learning the simplest things that I’ve been doing since I was 2 years old. It made realize how privileged I am to be here and be able to do this every day.”

Boutros has been teaching for 25 years, and Chanfrau has never failed to impress her.

“To see someone reach the pinnacle of their art form, and still be humble, is so refreshing,” Boutros said. “Now, has Caroline reached her pinnacle? No, not yet, of course.

She’s only 17 years old, but always humble. She’s always kind.”

BALLERINA FOR LIFE

There were only 21 girls, and many were from top ballet schools or had played lead roles, like Clara in “The Nutcracker,” for the New York City Ballet’s production.

“And then it was me, from Ormond Beach,” Chanfrau said. “It was definitely a very big learning experience, but I think that I kind of realized that I loved ballet in a very different way than they did. It wasn’t my whole life, but it was a specific joy that I had.”

Once in college, Chanfrau doesn’t know yet if dance is the professional path she will take. She’s looking forward to exploring her options and taking all sorts of different classes to find what she likes. A daughter of two local lawyers, she has a feeling she may follow in their footsteps. But dance will continue to be a part of her life.

She’s appreciative of having been able to grow up in the European School. Sometimes, it may not have felt that way, especially when the frustration of not getting a step sets in, but Chanfrau said dancers need to look at the “bigger picture.”

“I feel like every little girl wants to be a ballerina, and so I think that everyone needs to remember that desire that they had when they were little, or their dream, and not focus on all the setbacks,” Chanfrau said.

“Just remember why they love it all the time.”

The Casements holidays begin C

hristmas cheer was abundant on Friday, Dec. 3, as celebrations for the The Casements Guild’s 43rdannual Christmas Gala commenced.

The gala brought families together at Rockefeller Gardens to enjoy face painting, cookie decorating, train rides and live music. Children could also write and mail letters to Santa before taking a photo with him and Mrs. Claus. The theme for this year’s gala was “The Jewel of Ormond Beach,” reflected in the decor adorning the outside of Rockefeller’s winter home.

The Casements will remain decorated through the end of the month, in addition to the 15th-

annual Holidays at The Casements event at 6 p.m.

Thursday, Dec. 16, which will feature dessert, music and an open house.

TRIBUTES Bernard H. Strasser 1930-2021 Bernard H. Strasser, 91, of Ormond Beach, FL went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, November 10, 2021.

Bernie grew up in Norwich, NY and graduated from Norwich High School in 1947. He was King of the Prom and a basketball and track star. He earned his undergraduate degree from Arizona State and then volunteered for the draft for the Korean War. He rose quickly through the ranks in the Army and became a Sergeant. After he was honorably discharged he attended the Wharton School of business and earned his MBA. He went on to work for General Electric as an accountant but decided this wasn’t for him. He then attended Duke University and earned his Law degree. He was a practicing attorney for 56 years in Volusia County.

While attending Duke University he met Irene Abernethy and they were married in 1958. Within a year of being married they decided to move to Florida and have lived in Volusia County ever since. Mr. Strasser has always been involved with many civic organizations,

Rotary Club; Chairman of the Salvation Army Daytona Beach Advisory Board; President of the Board of Directors of the ACT Corporation; President of the Volusia County Bar Association; Florida Bar; and an Elder and Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church. He was honored with numerous awards from Volunteer of the Year for Halifax Habitat for Humanity, United Way Volunteer of the year and a Paul Harris Fellow Award from the Rotary Club. He will be greatly missed within the community, civic and law organizations.

He is survived by his wife, Irene Strasser, sons, Drew Strasser (Lori) and Brian Strasser (Rosalind),

His service was held. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be given in his name to Halifax Habitat for Humanity and the Salvation Army-Daytona Beach. Condolences to the family may be shared at www.dalewoodwardfuneralhomes.com.

The Seabreeze boys soccer team’s pregame chant rang out in the cold night air Tuesday, Nov. 30, at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex as an all-senior starting lineup hit the pitch on senior night.

Foreign exchange student Mathias Skaaning and third-year varsity player Michael Suzanne scored two goals in the first 11 minutes. Frazer Cross kicked the final goal, boosting the ’Crabs to a 3-2 win over Orange City University.

Seabreeze has regained its footing after opening the season with two losses against tough opponents Eau Gallie and Ponte Vedra. The Sandcrabs (5-2) have since won five in a row, including a 3-0 victory over Mainland on Dec. 3.

Seabreeze is rebuilding after last year’s graduations left a big gap in the defense with the departure of major playmakers Chance Shamlou and Noah Korfant.

“We were dealt some strong opponents to start,” first-year head coach Jon Kinsler said. “However, we competed and had chances to win both. I did not have to make many adjustments, just needed more consistency

Kinsler brings years of elite playing and coaching experience. He played for Seabreeze and then Division 1 Georgia Southern University.

He finished his career playing semiprofessionally for USL2, formerly known as PDL, with the Baton Rouge Capitals.

He has been coaching competitive teams for the Ormond Beach Soccer Club, was also as an assistant coach for Seabreeze and has coached at Father Lopez High School.

“It feels great being back and handling the program at full capacity,” Kinsler said.

With one returning starter on the back line, Kinsler is relying on defenders Jake Vollinger, Matthew Vail and halfback Brian Dunlop to play much bigger roles, while looking for more scoring from Cross and Skaaning.

Coaches continue to work with goalkeeper A.J. Cole on communicating and directing the players consistently. Cole’s size and his ability to make big saves with a lot of chaos in the box has been increasingly beneficial as the season has progressed. The junior had 11 saves through his first three games in his first year playing full-time on the varsity squad.

New to the coaching staff this year is former Seabreeze player Jordan Bowling. He is in the unique position to be able to work with his father, assistant coach Rob Bowling, and coach his youngest brother, player Peyton Bowling. He hopes to bring a player’s perspective to the team as he is closer to the their age and continues to play soccer.

“I think Jon brings more of an overall tactical perspective,” he said.

“Rob brings the wisdom. He’s the life experience guy. I try to bring a little more first-hand direction, because I played on their team and still play.”

Calder, Seabreeze go down fighting in loss to Flagler Palm Coast

The game was out of reach for Seabreeze. But the basket was not for Sandcrabs sophomore Jordan Calder.

Going into the fourth quarter Dec. 6 at Flagler Palm Coast High School, the Sandcrabs trailed 68-38 and sharpshooter Calder had been held to two points.

Calder decided to go down fighting.

“I told myself I need to start shooting some 3’s. That’s what I’m good at,” he said. “So, I started shooting.”

Calder hit three 3-point shots in the fourth quarter and finished with a team-high 11 points in Seabreeze’s 78-51 loss.

“It was harder to get open 3’s against their man defense,” Calder said. “I felt I had to create space for myself using jab steps and stepbacks.”

Seabreeze fell to 0-4, but Calder feels like he is finding a groove. He also hit three 3-pointers and scored 13 points against Father Lopez on Dec. 2.

to keep knocking them down, and as the season progresses, I feel like I’m going to get into a rhythm.”

FPC jumped out to a 20-9 lead in the first quarter and went up 42-17 at halftime.

The Bulldogs (2-3) hit 12 3-pointers, with Rya’sir Jefferson and Alex Aviles combining for nine from long range.
