Goodbye 2021, Year in review: Best of Cops Corner hello 2022 COPS CORNER FEB. 16

And just like that, another year has flown by.

I don’t know about you, but 2021 oftentimes felt like an extension of 2020 for me. We’re still dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, still adjusting to what that looks like on a daily basis, and still, at times, pining for a “normalcy” of years past. But as they say, the show must go on. For us in the news business, that meant making sure you knew what was going on in your community, the decisions your local elected officials were making and the notable, and at times inspiring, things your neighbors were doing, no matter what else was going on in the world.

And in that regard, 2021 delivered.

In this year’s timeline, you’ll see highlights of what has occurred in Ormond Beach in the last 365 days. Here are some that stand out to me: The grassroots movement that led to the preservation of 36 acres of land in the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail; the battle to save the Ormond Beach Union Church building from demolition, which though unsuccessful, brought citizens together for a cause; and seeing The Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler County keep their mission alive after the loss of their executive director Gloria Max. I am looking forward to seeing what 2022 has in store for our city.

Whatever next year brings, I can assure you readers of one thing: The Ormond Beach Observer will ensure you stay informed.

RETURN TO SENDER 12:38 p.m. — First block of South Beach Street Suspicious incident. A New Smyrna Beach man sent the city a package containing 10 wooden gift shop souvenirs and a note claiming them to be items sent on behalf of prisoners and those pardoned by former President Trump, according to a police report.

A city employee notified police about the package and the “nonsensical note,” and police responded in order to examine the package. The reporting officer noted the souvenirs were wrapped in paper towels and secured with rubber bands.

Each was signed by the man, was numbered, and displayed a different name or storefront. The note stated that the man had recently lost or moved storage units and was sending the items to government officials.

The city employee said the package would be returned to the sender.

APRIL 1

UNOFFICIAL ENFORCER 4:20 p.m. — 100 block of Northbrook Circle Burglary. A 75-year-old Ormond Beach woman faces a felony burglary charge after she reached inside a 19-year-old man’s vehicle and smacked the back of his head with two fingers over him parking in a “No Parking” zone.

Police report that the woman said she informed the man that he couldn’t park there and that he and his passenger were being disrespectful. The woman did admit to reaching inside the vehicle, but said she tapped the victim on the back of the head “after he was being smart with her,” the report states. Police

told her that she should not be enforcing parking issues as that was their job.

The victim told officers that he had been waiting for his sister to get out of school when the woman showed up. He said she was “being very rude” so he decided to ignore her. That’s when she put her hands on him, he told police, adding that she walked away smiling. He told police he wished to pursue charges.

Police advised him not to be in the neighborhood in the future to avoid “instigating the incident,” and informed him of the designated pick-up area for students.

JULY 21

EATING WHILE DRIVING 1:35 p.m. — 100 block of Ocean Shore Boulevard DUI. A 70-year-old Daytona Beach woman was charged with driving under the influence after police report she caused a three-car crash, which she said occurred because she got distracted as she tried to eat a pizza while driving.

There was a large pizza in the front passenger seat area “that was obviously disturbed in relation to the crash,” the report details. The woman first struck a parked vehicle in the city roadway, and the second vehicle was impacted enough to strike the third vehicle parked in front of it.

The woman had a large bruise on her forehead, but police noted she seemed unaware of this injury. As she appeared confused, the reporting officer asked her a few questions, to which the woman gave the wrong reply. One of the questions asked was about who the president was, whom the woman replied was “Mr. Bush.”

She was asked to complete a series of field sobriety exercises, which she failed. Police asked her if she had been taking any medications, and the woman provided the report-

ing officer with a list. Out of her concern, the report states, the woman was transported to the hospital.

OCT. 31

ALL HALLOW’S EVE 8:56 p.m. — 2000 block of John Anderson Drive Suspicious incident. Halloween is a time for spooks, but for some campers, things got a little too realistic.

Deputies and police officers responded to an area near Tomoka State Park after receiving reports about a man screaming for help just west of the intercoastal waterway.

The reporting officer was flagged down by a camper who said the man sounded like he was in distress and that his cries appeared to be coming northeast of his campsite. The camper told the officer he tried to find the man, but never saw him.

A second witness staying in a nearby campsite said it sounded like the man was off in the distance, maybe a quarter to a half-mile northeast from the recreation center.

Officials combed the area by boat, jet ski, air and on foot but found nothing.

The man was later taken to jail.

NOV. 14

FIRE IN THE HOLE 12:15 a.m. — First block of John Anderson Drive Vandalism. Police suspect three young men used fireworks to vandalize the men’s restroom at a local park, causing about $500 worth of damage, according to an incident report.

Two witnesses who were walking the park saw the men get out of a dark-colored four-door car and run toward the bathrooms, the report details. A few minutes later, they ran back to the car and witnesses heard them say they had to leave “quickly.”

The witnesses decided to investigate because of the men’s strange behavior and discovered the men’s restroom was filled with smoke and that the toilet had been shattered.

A high school team state championship and an individual state championship highlighted the 2021 sports year in Ormond Beach. Here are five of the top sports moments: THE WRIGHT STUFF

Mainland High senior Cydney Wright won the Class 3A state championship in the 200-meter run on May 7 at the state track and field meet.

Wright also finished third at state in the 100 meters. She ran a 23.68 in the 200, just off her personalrecord time of 23.46, which ranked 16th in the nation in 2021. She ran 11.72 in the 100. Wright, who is now a freshman on the Stanford University track team, was also the regional champ in both events.

Seabreeze’s Ella Chandler and Father Lopez’s Victoria Woods also placed in the top five at state. Chandler finished third in Class 3A in the 800 meters with a time of 2:14.57.

Seabreeze won the girls state bowling championship on Nov. 4. Stacey Spaulding (pictured above), Madison Kuenning, Breanna Hess, Sofia Allem and Kara Beissel had a flawless run through the Baker tournament, beating Bell Creek Academy 3-2 in the final. It was the Sandcrabs’ first state bowling title in school history.

SANDCRABS SHINE ON GOLF COURSE Seabreeze sophomore Amelia Cobb shot a 2-over-par 146 to finish third at the Class 2A state golf championship in November and led the Sandcrabs to a fourthplace team finish. It was the best individual and team finish in school history. Mainland’s Loa Johannsson finished seventh at the state tournament with a 151.

BACK IN THE PLAYOFFS While Mainland stretched its football

playoff streak to 28 consecutive seasons — the most in the state among public schools — Seabreeze won its first district title in 14 years.

With Mainland coach Travis Roland returning to his alma mater, the Bucs overcame a rocky start to win a wild-card spot to the Class 6A playoffs, where they lost a close first-round game to district champ Orlando Jones, 35-28.

After the season, Mainland running back Isaiah Gordon signed a letter-of-intent with Marshall University. Gordon graduated early and will enroll at Marshall in January.

Seabreeze coach Pat Brown, who took over a 1-9 team in 2019, led the Sandcrabs to a 6-5 record and an automatic playoff spot after compiling a perfect 3-0 district record.

Linebacker Jeremy West led the Sandcrabs with 12.5 sacks on the season.

KINGSTON SHORES

SEABREEZE SOCCER TEAMS While the Seabreeze boys soccer team advanced to the Class 5A regional finals in February, the girls team suffered a crushing doubleovertime loss to eventual state champ Ponte Vedra in the regional semifinals. Seabreeze held the Sharks scoreless for more than 90 minutes before Ponte Vedra scored with 2:40 left in the second overtime to win 1-0.

Seabreeze’s boys team finished with a 14-3-2 record, beating Ponte Vedra 2-0 and Gainesville 1-0 to advance to the regional finals as one of the final eight teams in Class 5A. Both soccer teams sparkled on defense all season, with the boys recording 10 shutouts and the girls compiling seven clean sheets in 15 games.
