Reflecting on 2022: What will you remember most?
I can’t wait to see what 2023 has in store for us, Ormond Beach.
It’s that time of year again, when we reflect on what 2022 has brought.
Here at the Observer, it’s been a year of change. We transitioned our pages to a broadsheet size. We celebrated our 10th anniversary here in Ormond Beach. We saw a couple familiar faces in the office say their goodbyes, and in turn, welcomed new ones onboard.
This year, we have published over 1,200 stories in the Ormond Beach Observer. I’m not sure how many words, but I can safely say it’s probably a whole lot.
It’s always a bit of a challenge to pick out which stories to highlight in our annual timeline. For a small town, Ormond Beach, you certainly have a lot going on.
But, here are some of the ones that stood out the most for me:
Ron Rice, both of whom impacted the community in different ways, and are undoubtedly missed; the tremendous impact to our coast caused by both Hurricane Ian and Nicole; the opening of the Ormond Memorial Art Museum’s renovated building; the abrupt transition of Volusia County Schools’ superintendents; and, of course, the 2022 elections, which brought the city three new commissioners.
Votran route adjustments made permanent
The Volusia County Council recently decided to make Votran’s temporary route adjustments permanent in response to a driver shortage.

2023 is bound to bring more change. We’ll have our reporter notebooks at the ready.
After approval from the council earlier this year, Votran enacted route reductions in three phases, according to a county press release. The route changes, which are now permanent, are as follows:
All Saturday routes operate on a 60-minute frequency throughout the day.
Routes 3, 4, 11 and 60 operate on a 60-minute frequency during nonpeak times.
Routes 7, 10 and 20 operate on a 60-minute frequency throughout the day.
“Our staff held six public meetings, two of which were virtual, allowing residents to voice concerns of how the change in routes is impacting them,” Votran General Manager Kelvin Miller said. “With our driver shortage, we had to find ways to still deliver a quality service, but with fewer resources.”
The county stated that Votran will continue to assess the needs of its riders and propose route adjustments when appropriate.
Davidson & Destination Daytona, said in an email. Her father, Bruce Rossmeyer, was one of the founders of Camp Boggy Creek.
“We started the ride and raising money for Camp Boggy Creek before the camp was even built,” she said. “My dad loved helping kids.”
The 28th annual Bruce Rossmeyer Ride for Children raised over $414,000 on Dec. 11 for Camp Boggy Creek, a nonprofit camp designed for children with serious illnesses.
The ride is usually held on the first Sunday in October, but this year, the police-escorted ride had to be postponed due to Hurricane Ian, Mandy Rossmeyer, marketing director for Teddy Morse’s Daytona Harley-
The Rossmeyer family raises money for the event through sponsorships, fundraising pages, donations and rider participation. The ride, which had 354 preregistered riders and about 50 who signed on the day of the event, began at Destination Daytona and finished at Camp Boggy Creek in Eustis, Rossmeyer said. The event featured live entertainment and a silent auction.
The Ride for Children committee is chaired by John Hamlin.

CRIME REPORT
Man sentenced to life in prison for murder of Daytona woman
A Volusia County grand jury on Dec. 20 sentenced a 53-year-old man to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after 25 years, for the 1991 murder of Daytona Beach woman Linda Lois Little.
Michael Townson — who is already serving a life sentence in Brevard County for a 2007 murder — was indicted in October after he admitted that he had killed Little, 43, who was last seen on Oct. 11, 1991 and reported missing three days later, according to a press release.
Townson told detectives he was in Daytona Beach for his birthday in October 1991 when he met Little at the 701 Club bar inside the old Texan Hotel in Daytona Beach. The pair left in his car and got into an argument, and Townson admitted he “backhanded” Little and choked her. Once he realized he had killed her, he said, he drove to Georgia and left her body behind a dumpster.
Her body was never located.
Townson was serving a life sentence in Brevard County for beating a woman to death with a steel pipe in her Titusville home in 2007.
“This defendant is a confessed serial killer. It is gratifying to solve a cold case such as this,” State Attorney R.J. Larizza said. “I hope the plea brings peace to the family during the Christmas holidays.”

D’OH! A DEER!
4:42 a.m. — First block of Box Elder Court
Information. Police were dispatched to the home of an 81-year-old Ormond Beach man after a burglary alarm went off, but the culprit turned out to be the four-legged kind.
The man told police that he had heard a loud noise before the alarm went off, and police saw that the glass door leading to a back room had been knocked down, according to an incident report. Suspecting the home had been burglarized, the reporting officer called for a second unit. The residence was cleared, and police noted that the damage was only present in the back room of the home, with paintings and paint brushes scattered on the floor along with the broken glass.
That’s when an officer noticed deer prints on the ground leading up
on the door and all over the room.
Another officer said he had seen a deer when he turned onto the street.
Officers concluded that the suspect in this case was, indeed, a deer.

MISSING CRASH?
5:54 p.m. — 700 block of Airport Road, Ormond Beach Aircraft crash. Police were dispatched to the airport after a pilot reported seeing a Cessna plane crash in the Ormond Beach area northwest of the airport. But did a plane actually crash?
According to an incident report, several law enforcement units patrolled the area, and the reporting officer spoke with a nearby aviation company employee who said only one aircraft had flown from the airport to St. Augustine, and that the trip had been successful.
Employees at the airport tower said they had no knowledge of an aircraft crash.
Law enforcement officers in Flagler County were also contacted. They didn’t report any crashes, either.
Air One was used to try to locate the aircraft, flying from Daytona Beach to Ormond Beach, but found nothing.
During the investigation, a resident flagged down deputies and told them they had seen a “big cloud of gray dust” on Leeway Trail and Arabian Trail, but nothing was found. Other residents said they heard a crash or saw a “big puff of smoke” in the same area.
There were no reports of unaccounted planes.
AUG. 2 ‘TRYING TO CONNECT WITH GOD’
8:14 p.m. — Ormond Beach Loitering or prowling. Someone noticed a man pulling on the door handles of a church van in a church parking lot.
A police officer found the man in the woods nearby, according to the officer’s account in an arrest report.
The man “stated that he was a man of faith, and was trying to connect with God,” the officer wrote in the report. “The defendant stated he was pushed by God to the van.”
The officer tried to get the man to elaborate on why he’d approached the van, but the man “just stated that’s where God pushed him,” according to the officer’s report.
The officer arrested him.
OCT. 14 ERRATIC WITH PURPOSE? 10:10 a.m. — First block of South Beach Street, Ormond Beach Fleeing/attempting to elude law enforcement. An officer was walking to his motorcycle when he heard the sounds of a car crash nearby.
He then saw an SUV that appeared to be “executing doughnuts in the roadway” before turning toward City Hall, according to a police report.
Once in the City Hall parking lot, the SUV came around the corner on the two driver-side tires while its driver, a 52-year-old man from Daytona Beach, hung out of the open car door. The officer shouted for him to stop. But the man, still hanging out of the door, just said “OOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOO,” as written verbatim in the police report. He continued to
speed off, striking a parked car’s driver-side mirror then jumping over two curbs and sidewalks before crashing into a tree line.
The officer arrived to the crash and found the vehicle empty, but still running. Police began searching the scene and examining other cars in the parking lot for damage when the reporting officer found the man lying face down. The man was placed under arrest.
The man said he had struck a stop sign when leaving the parking lot and had been trying to get it “unstuck” by driving erratically — hence, the doughnuts in the road. Officers found a syringe containing fentanyl inside his car.
NOV. 6 TRAIL ERROR
6:11 p.m. — 700 block of Airport Road, Ormond Beach Information. Police responded to a local park after a man in a Jeep got stuck while trying to drive down a mountain bike trail.
The 43-year-old Ormond Beach man told police that he had just finished building the Jeep and thought the trail was open for utility vehicles, according to an incident report. He didn’t realize it was a mountain bike trail. The reporting officer noted that the man’s Jeep was stuck in the mud with a tree lodged in the front right bumper.
The man tried to remove the Jeep, but broke its winch in the process, sinking the vehicle in the mud. Eventually, he was able to get the winch working, and safely removed the Jeep from the trail, the report states.

Year in Sports: Mainland revives championship memories
BRENT WORONOFF ASSOCIATE EDITOR
HARRELL CARRIES BUCS
Entering the state football playoffs, Mainland was seeded fourth out of eight teams in its region.
The Bucs wound up winning four straight playoff games to advance to the state championship for just the second time in school history.
The Bucs battled until the end in a 32-30 loss to Lake Wales in the Class 3S championship game on Dec. 16.
Ajai Harrell was a one-man wrecking crew in Mainland’s five playoff games, scoring a total of 14 touchdowns playing a variety of positions.
In the final, Harrell ran for 195 yards and three touchdowns and caught nine passes for 139 yards.
While Harrell is graduating, the Bucs will return a ton of talent next year, including four-star receiver James Randle and three-star safety Zay Mincey.
“We’ll be back,” said coach Travis Roland, who was the leading tackler on the Bucs’ only state championship team in 2003.
BOWLERS FALL JUST SHORT OF REPEAT
Seabreeze’s girls bowling team came within seven pins of defending its state championship.
A year after winning the title, Sandcrabs settled for runnerup honors at the bowling championships on Nov. 3.
Space Coast High School won the last Baker game by seven pins to defeat Seabreeze 3-2 in the title match.
“I’m very proud of the girls,” Seabreeze coach Paul Shuler said. “They were able to get back into the finals, which was pretty impressive.”
The Sandcrabs won the district championship for the second year in a row.
CHANDLER EXCELS ON TRACK
Seabreeze’s Ella Chandler ran the 800 meters in two finals at the Class 3A state track and field championships on May 13. She finished among the top four both times.
Chandler finished fourth in the 800-meter run with a personalrecord time of 2:13.70.
Seabreeze track coach Jenna Meyers-Sinett said Chandler was “gassed” after that run, especially after running her first lap in a blistering 1:03.
But Chandler returned to run the anchor leg in the 4x800 relay and led the Sandcrabs to a third-place finish.
Arianna Roy, Mackenzie Roy, Nickole Dane and Chandler blew their PR out of the water with a time of 9:24.85.
“Pretty much all of their splits were PR’s,” Meyers-Sinett said.
THIRD PLACE FOR COBB, SEABREEZE GOLFERS
DECEMBER 29, 2022
Year in Review SPORTS
Mainland’s football team and Seabreeze’s girls bowling team fell just short of winning state championships, but 2022 was a good year in sports for the two high schools.
Seabreeze junior Amelia Cobb tied for third place individually and led the Sandcrabs to a third-place team finish at the Class 2A state golf championships Nov. 15-16.
Sandcrabs have memorable finishes on the track, in the pool, on the golf course and on the bowling lanes.

Sandcrab Kylie Watson works on her juking prowess.
Cobb shot even-par 72-72—144 to finish third at state for the second year in a row. She had four birdies over a six-hole stretch on the front nine during day 2.
Sophomore Riley Fletcher finished 12th overall with a 153.
“I think Amelia had a little more confidence coming into the tournament this year,” Seabreeze coach Cory Flickinger said. “Her goal was to win it. She was happy with the results, but she has high hopes to win it next year.”
He finished sixth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22 seconds and fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a personal record 59.01 seconds.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been that stressed my whole life,” Orchard said standing on the blocks for his last event, the 100 breaststroke
“The adrenaline
me.”
Orchard, who is not a year-round swimmer, steadily improved his times during the season, which is his selling point to be a walkon college swimmer, his coach, Samatha Fabulich, said.
“It’s amazing what he does not being a year-round swimmer and training for honestly about two months,” she said. “It shows how much potential he has.”
