Thirteen more homes? Planning Board says no Palm Coast E-section development, by ICI Homes, was already approved for 58 residential units. SIERRA WILLIAMS STAFF WRITER

An application to increase a development in the Easthampton neighborhood has been recommended for denial by the Palm Coast’s Planning & Land Development Regulation Board. The board recommended denial in a 6-0 vote, with one member absent from the meeting. Developer CP and HG Residential Lots LLC — a subsidiary of ICI Homes — has approval to build 58 dwelling units on the 37-acre lot through a 2012 settlement agreement with Palm Coast. The property is located along Eric Drive and Easthampton Boulevard, and is an infill project, meaning it’s on a lot within existing neighborhoods. The application was to increase the number of units by 13 and reduce the minimal lot size to 5,500 square feet from 8,250 in the East Hampton Master Planned Development. The request was also to reduce the internal lot widths and the interior building setbacks. ICI Homes representatives said that the change is because it is more expensive to build housing now because of a change in market conditions. The additions would make the project “more feasible,” representative Dick Smith said. Planning Board Chair Sandra Shank said that is not

enough. “Financial feasibility is not enough to warrant deviating from what is required for them to be able to meet the consistency of the land development code,” Shank said. The settlement agreement stemmed from a 2004 lawsuit. A change to the city’s comprehensive plan redesignated the land to City Greenbelt from Flagler County’s residentiallow density, reducing the density from 1-3 units per acre to just 1 unit per acre. ICI Homes’ John Stowers said the settlement agreement gives the developer the ability to request changes, and costs have increased dramatically to construct homes since 2012. “It’s not about re-trading a deal,” Stowers said. “It’s about the evolution of the marketplace.” Many residents showed up to protest the additional units, stating the infrastructure, specifically the water, capacity was not there to support the increase in size. But, city planner Michael Hanson said that, as of now, Palm Coast has the capacity to handle the requested increase. Shank said there are other, evidence-supported reasons to deny the request. She and her fellow board members listed several, including the incompatibility with surrounding neighborhoods and a lack of a secondary entrance or exit to the neighborhood for emergencies. The developer’s application would require a modification to the settlement agreement, which only the Palm Coast City Council can approve. The council will review the item, and the planning board’s recommendation for denial, at a later council meeting.

NEWS BRIEFS Inmate sentenced to 8 more years after stealing A Putnam inmate who stole from a Palm Coast home in April while on an inmate work crew has been sentenced to eight additional years. Jay Working, 34, had just 14 days left on his original sentence at Putnam Correctional Institution. Working pleaded no contest, a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office press release said.

A Palm Coast man accused of stealing another man’s bicycle from a gas station claimed he mistakenly grabbed the wrong bike because he was drunk. Though the suspect said the victim could have the suspect’s bike, the suspect was still taken to jail for theft. The stolen bicycle is valued between $100-$250.

now live. The upgrade has been in the works for a couple of years. It was identified as a goal in early 2023 during a City Commission strategic planning workshop, going out to bid later that year. In March 2024, the City Commission approved an almost $210,000 contract with Granicus, a software company headquartered out of Denver, Colorado. Of the total contract amount, $130,325 accounted for the website redesign, a one-time cost. The remaining funds in the contract — $79,645.73 — were slated for video streaming, voting configuration and subscription fees, with set 5% increases for future years, according to the staff report. Video streaming for City Commission meetings has not yet been implemented. Assistant City Manager Claire Whitley announced the

man who was found asleep at the wheel while at a turn lane with a green light. Several cars were honking their horns and flashing their lights at the driver, who failed to move his car through several light cycles, according to a police report. The reporting officer then approached the window of the car and noticed the driver was asleep. The officer knocked on the window, but he didn’t wake up. He only came to, the report states, once the officer opened the door and turned off the car. The man told the officer that he had come from a friend’s house and had a couple drinks there. “I made a mistake,” he said, according to the report. He refused to participate in field sobriety exercises or provide a breath sample. During a search of his car, police found drug paraphernalia. He was taken to jail.

Bunnell man flees Flagler deputies, caught with weed

A Bunnell man is in the Flagler County jail after he fled from deputies to avoid going to jail. An FCSO deputy attempted to pull over Byrone Lord, 22, on Old Dixie Highway near Bunnell when Lord was caught driving 59 mph in a 35 mph zone. Instead of pulling over, Lord accelerated into oncoming traffic and turned onto U.S. 1, according to a

CRASH AND FLEE 10:33 p.m. — 900 block of North Halifax Drive, Ormond Beach DUI. A 50-year-old Ormond Beach man was arrested after he crashed into a road sign and a tree while driving under the influence, and left the scene. Police report that they received a call about a suspicious vehicle at a local church. The caller believed they were being followed, but later asked law enforcement not to respond after losing sight of the vehicle. About three minutes later, police were notified of the crash. Witnesses saw him fleeing on foot and refuse orders to stop from law enforcement. The man was apprehended but refused to speak to officers. He was deemed a flight risk and thus did not complete field sobriety exercises, according to his arrest report. Police suspected he

Deputies also found a purse Lord had discarded that contained another 12 grams of marijuana.

A BIT OF EVERYTHING 8:40 p.m. — Intersection of State Road 100 and Seminole Woods Boulevard, Palm Coast DUI. A Palm Coast man who was found unconscious behind the wheel of his car at an intersection later told deputies had taken “a little bit of everything” when asked if he’d taken any narcotics. Law enforcement officers on their way back to work after a holiday event found the driver slumped, unconscious in his running car at the intersection, according to an arrest report. Because the driver did not respond to any attempt to wake him, one police officer used their baton to break two windows to place the car in park. The man was arrested.

‘We’re hoping for a Christmas miracle’ Ormond Beach wildlife sanctuary at risk of eviction seeks community donations. JARLEENE ALMENAS MANAGING EDITOR

The future of an Ormond Beach wildlife sanctuary is now uncertain, as the property housing dozens of injured, orphaned and non-releasable animals faces foreclosure — even though the nonprofit has never missed a month’s rent. Samadhi Wildlife, a nonprofit wildlife rehabilitation organization, moved into 289 Pine Woods Drive in Plantation Pines on July 1, 2024. It’s a 2-acre property where nonprofit founder Dawn Barbone and her partner, Jesse Heilman, have constructed numerous enclosures housing different native Florida species, from raccoons to opossums, deer and squirrels. And to be able to continue their mission, Samadhi Wildlife asked the community to help raise $100,000. A GoFundMe was created on Dec. 14. Less than 10 days later, over $104,000 had been donated to Samadhi Wildlife. The nonprofit thanked donors in a Facebook post on Dec. 20. “Your generosity is protecting this land, these animals, and the future we are fighting so hard to save,” Samadhi Wildlife stated. “In the heart of this Christmas season, your support has been nothing short of extraordinary. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for believing in us and for showing up when it mattered most. In total, the nonprofit will need $400,000, but since it’s a significant sum, Barbone said to the Observer that they’re asking for donations in phases. “Samadhi Wildlife is a self-

less organization,” Barbone said. “We do nothing but give back and we take nothing. Now in this critical time where our future is uncertain ... we need the community to give back to us, and we need them to stand behind us in our mission to help save these animals who have nowhere to turn. They have no other options.” THE MISSION

At any given time, Samadhi Wildlife houses between 50 to over 100 animals. Many of them come to them in significant states of trauma, brought over both by members of the public and local law enforcement agencies, such as Florida Fish and Wildlife, Ormond

“I knew that was my calling. I knew that I had to be the voice for the animals that couldn’t speak. I had to be the hands to heal them when they can’t get medical care anywhere else.” Tommy, an African Sulcata tortoise.

Beach Police and the Volusia Sheriff’s Office. “We are one of the only rehab facilities that actually gives the traumas a second chance,” Barbone said. “Most rehab centers will take in healthy, viable animals, like healthy orphans, that are easy to rehab and return back to the wild.” So when a citizen notified them in November that the property they were renting was being foreclosed, the situation became an emergency for Samadhi Wildlife. On Oct. 8, Carrington Mortgage Services filed a lawsuit against the property owner, Tyler Breeden. The lawsuit alleges that Breeden stopped paying his mortgage since Aug. 1, 2024, a month after Samadhi Wildlife began renting the property from him. As far as the courts were concerned, Breeden lived at the property and did not have a tenant. “We don’t exist,” Barbone said, adding that Breeden has collected $45,000 from them for rent since they moved in. After notifying the clerk, the nonprofit was instructed to submit a copy of their lease and contact the mortgage company.

Samadhi Wildlife hopes to use the community’s donations to purchase and secure their current location. If this is not feasible, Samadhi Wildlife will use the funds to relocate. “That’s going to be huge,” Barbone said. “A lot of [the animals] need to be heavily medicated, just to be moved.” Volunteer Colleen Anderson discovered Samadhi Wildlife after a doe was hit by a car in her neighborhood, leaving her fawn orphaned. “Her fawn was running around our neighborhood crying for three days,” Anderson said. “Nobody could catch her, but we started making phone calls. It took a long time. Everybody was turning us away.” When she found Samadhi Wildlife, they took in the fawn, which at that point was dehydrated and malnourished. “Dawn immediately started giving her IV fluids and antibiotics and showed her a lot of love, care and attention, and introduced her to other fawns that were here,” Anderson said.

BARBONE’S CALLING

Helping animals has long been a part of who Barbone is. Since she was little, she said she’s felt a connection to animals. There are many organizations that help domesticated animals, such as dogs and cats. Those resources aren’t as readily available for wildlife. “We are destroying their habitats,” Barbone said. “We are solely responsible for the habitat destruction, yet these animals cannot turn to us because there are no government funds.” It’s why Samadhi Wildlife, she said, runs entirely on donations. “I knew that was my calling,” Barbone said. “I knew that I had to be the voice for the animals that couldn’t

speak. I had to be the hands to heal them when they can’t get medical care anywhere else.” Barbone’s entire life, Anderson said, has been dedicated to this mission. If the community can come together to help, Samadhi Wildlife can continue to help save animals, she added. “We’re hoping for a Christmas miracle,” Anderson said.

The City of Ormond Beach Parks and Recreation Department hosted its 19th annual Christmas event at The Casements on Thursday, Dec. 18. The celebration featured a festive open house, with The Casements decorated for the holidays, and visitors greeted by Santa and Mrs. Claus.

One of the highlights included a showcase of trees decorated by 20 organizations from around the city, such as the Capt. James Ormond Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, The Casements Camera Club, and the Environmental Discovery Center. Outside, the Daytona Beach Concert Band performed for guests, who enjoyed complimentary food and drinks throughout the evening. Before the band’s 7 p.m. performance, harpist De Luna performed inside as attendees strolled among the holiday decorations. The event also included a gift shop offering a variety of festive decor pieces.

When Father Jose Panthaplamthottiyil was first named the lead pastor at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, in 2019, he asked his parishioners what were the most important problems to solve. One problem stood out to Pamela Cowles: having only 15 minutes available for confession per week, for the whole parish. “I said, ‘If it’s not important for the priests, then it won’t be important for the parishioners to come,’” Cowles recalled. “And you know, he almost immediately turned it around. Now, he does a half hour before every Mass.” With six Masses every week, that’s three hours of confession with multiple priests, or about 12 times as much access as there used to be. Attendance at confession, he said later, is one of the most important signs of spiritual strength. “People need to be reconciled to God,” Father Jose, as everyone calls him, said to me. “We need to provide the opportunity to do that. When priests are available, people come. We don’t have any free

time, relaxing.” Cowles explained why confession is so important for her personally: “We know we have our loving father, and we know that we have a relationship — that he forgives us — but it’s the graces. The graces that we receive through the sacrament strengthens us to be better people and not commit the same sins over and over again. The confession strengthens you.” AT MASS

Father Jose was celebrated on Dec. 17, with a Golden Jubilee Mass, representing his 50th year in the priesthood. Over 1,100 people attended the noon Mass, on Dec. 17, at the church at 4600 Belle Terre Parkway, Palm Coast. Sunlight began to filter through the stained glass windows, depicting saints, high on the walls. A larger-than-life statue of the resurrected Jesus, arms outstretched, is suspended about 20 feet above the ornate altar. Near that alter, Father Jose was presented with a robe with gold print, called a chasuble, to remind him of his first day at the altar, as a symbol of the love of his parish. Father Jose accepted the gift and said: “For this day of joy, my heart is deeply grateful as I stand before you to celebrate 50 years of priesthood. When I look back on my journey, I see

only God’s mercy, guiding me. Every assignment, every person and every moment of these 50 years has been his gift to me.” Many other Catholic church leaders were in attendance, as well as family members who traveled from around the country. “Your presence today is one of the greatest blessings I could receive,” Father Jose said. “I rejoice because I am sharing this moment with all of you. … Let us remember that every step of our journey depends entirely on the mercy of God. With humble hearts, let us now ask God to forgive us our sins and prepare us to celebrate his holy mysteries.” The Mass proceeded, with Joshua Shanty, a grandnephew of Father Jose; and Rooha Shanty, his grandniece; reading from the Bible. Deacon Mike McKenna presented the gospel proclamation, followed by the homily, or sermon, delivered by Rev. Timothy Lindenfelser. “The Lord is near,” he said. “And we can sense his presence in many different ways in our life. But in no small way, we sense that the Lord is near in our beloved brother and pastor, Father Jose. Father Jose, just in his presence, his mannerisms, exudes the love of Christ. He exudes that welcomeness.” Lindenfelser said Father Jose’s goal is to build “communities of love” and to help others know they are children of God and are therefore always loved. He praised Father Jose’s work as a writer. In addition to writing 23 books, Father Jose also was a newspaper editor and has written a

weekly inspirational column, published in a daily newspaper in India called Deepika, for 40 years. Father Jose also received degrees in India, as well as Notre Dame and the University of Illinois. “In all his years as a journalist, he sought to give and reinforce us to know that the Lord is working, that indeed God is forgiving sins, miracles are happening,” Lindenfelser said. “Miracles are happening. … They don’t make the news, they’re not on television, they don’t often make it on social media, but God is working.” Father Jose spoke during the Mass as well, reflecting on his call to the priesthood, as a young man. He entered the seminary at the unusually young age of 14. “[God] chose me long before I was aware of his call,” Father Jose said. “... The Lord chose me to proclaim not my word, but his word. To offer not my wisdom, but his truth. … And to do all this not by my strength, but by the unfailing power of the Lord’s grace. … All the glory belongs to God. … I trust completely in his mercy.” He expressed gratitude “to God, who called me, sustained me, forgave me, carried me, and continues to lead me.” AFTER MASS

Pamela Cowles’ husband, Ron, is the head greeter at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. He converted to the faith in 1985, after his wife praying for him for 15 years. In his view, Father Jose’s impact is felt in the greeting ministry — not because there are more people involved, but because they are taught to be more welcoming. For Father Jose, author of “A Welcoming and Inviting Parish,” a people who want to spread the gospel must be friendly. And greeting is just one of the many ministries that have started or expanded since Father Jose came to town. The bulletin lists 36 prayer and devotional groups, 33 service groups, and seven support groups — including support groups led by Pamela Cowles, for bereavement and Alzheimer’s caregivers (email her at healthministry@seaspcfl.org). After the Mass, as I was talking to the Cowles, Father Jose was busy embracing one parishioner after another,

posing for photos, and looking directly into the eyes of everyone who wanted to speak with him. I stopped him for a moment to congratulate him and thank him for inviting me. I was about to leave, but I should have known that wouldn’t be the end of his attempts to make me, and others, feel welcome. He asked that we pose for a photo, and then asked that I attend the lunch celebration afterward, where the entire congregation was served lunch, across the parking lot in the hall and in overflow areas. Among the speeches and praise for Father Jose at the lunch were comments offered by Robert Snyder, Sylvia Reyes, Jess and Luz Socrates. Knights of Columbus leaders Greg Gully, Joseph Paul and Ramon Marrero recognized Father Jose’s impact in strengthening the parish, and his kindness and friendship. Finally, Father Rob Trujillo, who lives with Father Jose, said Father Jose’s favorite scripture is, “I can do all things in Christ, who strengthens me.” “We know Jesus has strengthened him,” Trujillo said. “... Tonight, we do not simply mark the passage of time, we celebrate God’s … mercy, God’s providence, made visible through the ministry of Father Jose. … As Father Jose reminds us, a priesthood jubilee is not about personal accomplishment, but about gratitude.” Then Trujillo noted that Father Jose wasn’t even in the room to hear the speech. “I hope he’s listening; I spent time on this thing,” he joked. In fact, Father Jose was moving in and out of the hall, visiting the crowds in the overflow areas before being brought back in to receive a gift delivered by Trujillo: a congratulatory framed photo of Pope Leo IV, sent from the Pope. After his own remarks, Father Jose was back to his parishioners, one on one, shaking hands and embracing them — Father Jose, the diminutive man with a broad toothy smile, the leader and writer with decades of education and leadership experience in India as well as the United States, who is seemingly able to make time for everyone.

or Beachside Elementary teacher Jordan Kalkhurst, there is no other career that could top the everyday interactions he has with students. “There is truly no other job in the world that gives you the same feeling as walking down the hallway and having dozens of kids with huge grins come running up for high fives and hugs,” Kalkhurst said. “Those moments never get old.” That extends to the cafeteria room, which can be a “wild place” on an elementary campus, he said. But some of his fondest memories come from working breakfast duty and greeting the hundreds of students as they start their day. “It’s such a fun way to begin the morning, and it reminds me why I love what I do,” he said. Kalkhurst is an ESE support facilitator at Beachside. This year, he’s also working as a part-time behavior support teacher for elementary students, providing specially designed instruction in reading, math and social skills. This is his fourth year teaching, having graduated from Daytona State College with his bachelor’s degree in Exceptional Student Education in 2021. In addition to being named Beachside Elementary’s Teacher of the Year, Kalkhurst was also chosen as a Top 5 district finalist for the recognition. “Being nominated for Teacher of the Year is honestly one of the coolest things that has ever happened to me,” Kalkhurst said. “It’s a huge honor, and I’m proud to carry on the legacy of the amazing Beachside TOTYs who came before me. The

whole experience has felt special from the very beginning, and it’s something I know I’ll remember for the rest of my life.” As he’s still early in his teaching career, he said he sometimes has moments where he second-guesses himself and wonders if he’s deserving. But the love and support he’s received from the people around him, especially his ESE team, is something Kalkhurst said he’ll carry with him long after this experience is over. Growing up, his dad worked for Scholastic, and Kalkhurst spent a lot of his childhood traveling around the U.S., and internationally, helping build reading rooms and hand out books at schools in need of resources. Meanwhile, he also got to meet many teachers and principals, and their passion for their students inspired him. “Those experiences made a huge impression on me,” Kalkhurst said. “For as long as I can remember, I’ve felt excited about the idea of becoming a teacher myself, and it’s something I’ve always wanted to do.” Knowing he can make a difference in his students’ lives keeps him motivated. “Showing up for them every day, loving them through the good moments and the tough ones, and

helping them become the best versions of themselves is what drives me,” he said. “I love my students and seeing them try their hardest makes everything worth it.” Being a father to a 1-year-old son has also added a new layer of motivation, Kalkhurst said. When he’s not in the classroom, he’s spending time with him, his wife and his parents. “I want my son to be proud of me and to grow up thinking his dad is the best (and coolest!) teacher ever,” he said. “That thought pushes me to keep showing up and giving my all!” A big sports fan, Kalkhurst loves watching college sports (he’s a fan of the University of Florida Gators, where he’s studying for his master’s degree) and has recently been interested in NASCAR. His advice to students? Mistakes don’t define you, and “This too shall pass.” “I try to remind my students of that when they’re having a tough moment or feeling overwhelmed,” Kalkhurst said. “Whatever they’re facing — a mistake, a bad day, a hard situation — it won’t last forever. Between learning from mistakes and remembering that hard moments pass, I hope they walk away knowing they’re stronger and more capable than they think.”

The Spruce Creek High School alumna went on to graduate with her bachelor’s degree from Troy University in Alabama, and later got her master’s in special education from Nova Southeastern University. She’s now been teaching for 26 years. This year, she was named Teacher of the Year for Pathways Elementary, where she teaches kindergarten. How did the nomination make her feel? “I was overwhelmed and shocked by the kind words,” Sampson said. In becoming a teacher, Sampson followed in her mom’s footsteps. Her mom taught high school and Sampson said she loved it and made

it look fun. Sampson started her education career teaching special education. Her favorite thing about being a teacher, she said, is seeing the moment a student finally gets a concept they have been working on. It’s what keeps her motivated — “When a struggling student makes big gains from the start of the year and becomes more confident in themselves,” she said. When she’s not working, she loves to spend time with her husband Wayne and her family. Sampson also loves to read and helps to take care of her mother. After obtaining her master’s degree, Sampson got the chance to speak with that one teacher from third grade. She showed the teacher her degrees. “She had no idea who I was or why I was telling her this but I made my point,” Sampson said. So her advice to students is not to give up. “You have the power inside of you to go far,” she said. “It might take you a little bit longer but if you try and do your work you will go far.”

t was through volunteer work that Annisa Clute discovered she loved being in the classroom. For much of her 20s, Clute worked as a bookkeeper and income tax preparer, but she often volunteered at her children’s school. It was there, she said, that she discovered the joy in supporting students, engaging with them and watching their excitement as they learned something new. Her son’s first grade teacher took note and encouraged her to pursue teaching as a profession. That, combined with Clute’s passion for working with children, motivated her to go back to school at 30 years old. “Choosing to become a teacher has been incredibly fulfilling, and I’m grateful every day that I made this career change,” Clute said. She graduated with her

bachelor’s degree in early childhood education and her master’s degree in special education from The College of St. Rose in Albany, New York. Clute began teaching in 2009, and since then, has taught multiple grade levels, including ESE, VPK, kindergarten, first grade, second grade and fourth grade. Clute is currently an ESE Support Facilitation teacher at Champion Elementary, where she was named Teacher of the Year. The nomination is an honor for Clute. “This recognition is incredibly meaningful because it reflects the dedication, time, and hard work that go into supporting students every day,” she said. “I also recognize that I would not be the teacher I am today without the support, collaboration, and mentorship of the exceptional educators and staff I have had the privilege to work with over the years. This nomination reinforces my commitment to the profession and reminds me how fortunate I am to be part of such a strong educational community.” The greatest takeaway from this experience, she added, is

Ormond Beach Elementary that the work she’s doing is meaningful and effective. “Validation is an incredible motivator, especially in a profession where we often question whether we are doing enough to support our students,” Clute said. “... Seeing our work through someone else’s perspective reminds us that even the seemingly simple moments can have a profound impact. Knowing that we can make a difference in a child’s life is truly the greatest reward.” Her favorite part of being a teacher is the connections she builds with her students. As an ESE Support Facilitation teacher, Clute works with students in kindergarten through fifth grade with learning disabilities by providing targeted instruction and interventions in English Language Arts and math. “I have the privilege of watching them grow and develop over the years, and I am able to support them as they overcome challenges that may impact their learning,” Clute said. “There is nothing more rewarding than witnessing their ‘lightbulb’ moments when a new skill finally clicks or sharing in the pride they feel when they achieve something they’ve worked hard for.” If she could share one piece of wisdom with her students, it would be for them to understand the importance of education and hard work. “Success rarely happens overnight — it is the result of dedication, persistence, and a willingness to learn,” Clute said. “The effort you invest now may not always feel significant in the moment, but it truly pays off later in life. Your education opens doors, and your work ethic determines how far you go once those doors open. Keep striving, stay focused, and remember that you are building the foundation for your future.” When she’s not in the classroom, Clute enjoys spending quality time with her family, traveling to new places and relaxing at home.

eslye Grossmann is goal oriented. H av i n g p rev i o u s ly worked in finance, the Ormond Beach Elementary Teacher of the Year said that she strives to surpass all goals laid out by the district. It’s what keeps her motivated as an educator. Grossman is in her 22nd year of teaching in elementary school. She’s currently teaching fourth grade. “My favorite thing about being a teacher is watching the smiles of children while they are learning,” she said. “So

much is expected of fourth graders and when they understand the material, it gives me such a great satisfaction.” Grossman, a Mainland High School grad, originally went to school for marketing, obtaining a degree from the University of Florida. She took a break from her finance career to take care of her three daughters, and when she was ready to go back to work, she decided to become a teacher, using a Transition to Teaching Grant. “I did a lot of volunteering and substitute teaching, as I wanted to be close to them,” Grossman said, referencing her daughters. “I grew into the love of helping other children learn.” Being named OBE’s Teacher of the Year makes her feel very honored, she said, adding that it’s helped her recognize that she is a great leader and

the nomination validates her growth and dedication. “I work so hard and am so passionate about making sure all children in my class learn to the best of their ability, and this recognition of this is very rewarding,” Grossman said. Grossman will be retiring from teaching in September 2026. When not in the classroom, she spends most of her free time with her husband and her three daughters’ families. They take trips to the mountains every year to hike, bike, shop and be outdoors. Grossman also stays active by playing pickleball and working out at the gym. Her advice to students? “I tell my students that no matter what life has dealt them, they have the ability to become anything they want to be,” Grossman said.

ara Giunta fell in love with working with children as a volunteer with the Special Olympics when she was in high school and college. She set out to become a special education teacher, but her father talked her into pursuing a business degree instead. So Giunta switched majors and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Penn State University. But she was never happy with her job, Giunta said. “I got married, had kids and stayed home for years,” she said. “When my oldest started elementary school and my youngest was in preschool, I

became the super volunteer who spent every free moment at school. I was on the PTA board and volunteered in the classrooms and was even trained in a phonics program so that I could go to various classrooms and do phonics groups.” The love of teaching and being at school led her to working in education, as she originally intended. Giunta started working as a paraprofessional in 2013. A year later, she became a teacher, in math and science for sixth and seventh graders. “While teaching, my strength was building relationships with students and being the teacher they wanted to go to for help,” Giunta said. “I decided my passion was working with students and their emotions and supporting them academically, behaviorally and emotionally.” So she went back to school for her master’s in psychology and became a school coun-

And now, she’s also been named her school’s Teacher of the Year. “The nomination makes me feel honored to represent Pine Trail, as so many of the amazing teachers at Pine Trail deserve this too, and I am lucky to be considered among them,” Giunta said. “It also makes me feel gratitude toward the students, my colleagues and community who recognize the impact I have made. I have poured my heart into the students and school, and this nomination says my efforts matter.” Her favorite thing about being a school counselor is being a trusted adult for students — the one they can talk to when they’re scared, confused, angry or just need a listening ear. “I like being able to make a difference early and knowing that my support now can shape a child’s entire educational journey and selfimage,” Giunta said. Her advice to students comes from her grandmother. “My grandmother always used to tell me, ‘You are enough, just as you are,’ and I have instilled that in my own children and my students,” Giunta said. “I also want to share that ‘Your feelings are real and they matter.’” When she’s not working at the school, Giunta enjoys reading, walking, cooking, the beach, and spending time with her family, friends and four dogs. She also enjoys paint-by-number activities and scrapbooking.

hat makes teaching a rewarding career? For Jacqueline Chartier, it’s seeing students outside of school light up with recognition and a smile when they spot her. “I have the chance every day to blend creativity, communication, and problem-solving skills while I teach and model for young and energetic minds that will shape the future,” Chartier said. “My favorite thing about being a teacher is when students come back years later to share how I have influenced them.” After all, it was her own teachers growing up that inspired Chartier, Tomoka Elementary’s Teacher of the Year, to pursue a career in education. Her third grade teacher wrote one of her recommendation letters for college. Chartier has now been teaching elementary education for 26 years. “I had some incredible teachers in my past that motivated and inspired me to become an educator,” she said. “They were kind, encouraging, supportive, and motivating. I wanted to be the same kind of teacher for my students.” Chartier teaches fourth grade math and science. She

loves being involved in school activities and is part of the Tomoka Elementary Leadership Team. She is the fourth grade team leader, runs the school’s social studies fair and spelling bee, and provides after school tutoring for students that speak English as a secondary language. Originally of Danbury, Connecticut, she moved to Florida to attend college and earned her degree from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg. She has worked for Volusia County Schools for 25 years — she taught for one year in Connecticut — and previously taught at Chisholm Elementary, Samsula Elementary and Cypress Creek Elementary. Being nominated as Tomoka Elementary’s Teacher of the Year is a privilege, Chartier said. “To have my peers recognize my passion for my profession is truly such a rewarding and humbling experience,” she said. One thing she is taking away from the experience is

the support and love she has received. “To see the teachers and staff that I admire every day nominate me for something that represents us, as a school, is an unforgettable experience,” Chartier said. “The praise and positivity I have felt from my colleagues, from our PTA, from our families, our students, our school district and our community has been nothing short of incredible.” When she’s not in the classroom, Chartier loves to spend time with her family — her husband Russ, son Devon and daughter Caimhe. A cat lover, Chartier has four in her household. She also enjoys hot yoga, reading, enjoying the sunshine at the pool or the beach, traveling and finding new local spots to explore. Her advice to students? “Challenges make us strong; struggles give us perseverance, but always looking for the silver lining, in situations and in others, is what matters the most,” Chartier said.

hen it comes to being a teacher, Caitlin Spencer followed in her mother’s footsteps. Not only was her mother an elementary school teacher for over 25 years, she was nominated in her district in North Carolina as Teacher of the Year. Spencer said she would have been thrilled to hear that her daughter had achieved the same at Hinson Middle School. Spencer’s mother died unexpectedly in January, making this experience bittersweet. “Truly, this nomination is an honor, but a painful one,” Spencer said. Spencer has been an educator at the middle school level since 2018 and is currently teaching seventh grade science. Teaching, she said, is a definite way to master the concepts and ideas that solve problems efficiently and effectively. It’s how her brain works, Spencer said. “Embedding that passion for understanding the world is something I look forward to conveying to my students daily,” she said. There are many things she enjoys about being a teacher,

here was once a time when Nancy Parris thought her professional career would be in music. A percussionist, she began her college career as a music major. But life, Parris said, got in the way and when she found

herself needing a full-time job, her sister Debbie, who worked for Volusia County Schools, steered her toward education. For 23 years, Parris worked as a paraprofessional. “From there, with a lot of inspiration and motivation from friends, family and teachers, I went back to school and became a teacher several years later,” said Parris, a graduate of the University of Central Florida. “I am so grateful to be a teacher, and I don’t take a single moment for granted.” She’s spent the last 14 years as a teacher, now currently at

Spencer said, but her favorite is figuring out what makes her students become engaged and excited about science. Spencer added that she’s challenged daily by her students, but it’s part of the fun of teaching. Motivation constantly oscillates, she said, but the better boundaries are established and the more she finds ways to support herself, the more successful her students become. That’s a goal she strives for daily. Teaching is a part of who she is. “Why did I become a teacher? I have always been a

teacher because I was raised by a teacher,” Spencer said. “I never decided. I am.” There are many pieces of wisdom she would love to share with her students. As her students are in middle school, her best piece of advice is to “show up and try,” and “get out of your own way.” When she’s not at Hinson, Spencer’s life revolves around her children — chauffeuring them and volunteering for fundraisers. Spencer also enjoys cooking, baking and boating, and loves to hike and push herself outside her comfort zone.

It’s an opportunity to represent her colleagues — and the teaching profession as a whole. “I am very proud to be a teacher as, in my opinion, it is the most important profession of all,” Parris said. “Without teachers to educate adolescent minds there would be no other professions.” She strives to offer her students challenging real-world lessons that promote collaborative learning, designing them in a way to encourage student engagement, she said. “I have an animated personality, so teaching gives me an opportunity to share my quirkiness with my students and create a classroom where students feel welcome and have fun learning,” Parris said. Her favorite thing about teaching is that her students love to come into her classroom every day. “They seem very excited to be there and eager to learn,” she said. “I especially love it when they walk away knowing something new that they can apply to life.” When she’s not working, Parris enjoys playing pickleball, fishing, relaxing with friends and playing with her two mini dachshund girls, Charley and Jacy. Her advice to students? “Hard work does pay off,” Parris said. “Great things can be achieved with great desire!”

ainland High School Math Coach Steven Clem wants his students to never stop learning and never give up on themselves. Challenges, he said, are not roadblocks. “They’re stepping stones to growth,” Clem said. “Every mistake is an opportunity to improve, and persistence will take you farther than talent alone. Believe in your ability to learn, and you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish.” A graduate of Daytona State College, this is Clem’s second year as a math coach at Mainland and seventh year in education. He decided to become a teacher because he discovered how much he valued training and working with others to help them learn something new or master a skill. Before working in education, Clem was in the restaurant industry. But over time, he said, he realized teaching allowed him to combine his love for learning and his desire to help others succeed. Being named Mainland’s Teacher of the Year makes him feel “truly appreciated and grateful,” he said, adding that it was a wonderful surprise. “It reminds me that every effort, big or small, mat-

ters,” Clem said. “Even the things we do quietly, without expecting recognition, can make a lasting impact. This experience reinforces the importance of embracing the moment and appreciating the difference we make in the lives of students and colleagues every day.” Some of his favorite things about teaching are that every day brings new opportunities and successes, and that no two days are the same. He loves being in an environment where learning is the focus, and seeing students get excited about discovering something new or accomplishing what they once thought was impossible is fulfilling, he said. His belief that challenges create opportunities for growth keeps him motivated as a teacher. “I’ve always been driven

by problem-solving and the idea that every obstacle has a solution,” Clem said. “When things get tough, I see it as a chance to learn, adapt, and improve, not just for myself, but for the students and teachers I support. To me, it’s important to give my best each and every day, knowing that I’m doing everything I can to make a positive impact. I strive to approach my work in a way that reflects my faith and values, doing things as I believe God would have me do them, with integrity, compassion, and purpose.” When he’s not working, Clem enjoys spending time with his family — his wife, his son and daughter-in-law — and learning new skills like building or repairing things. He also loves to play with his dog and be outdoors, where he enjoys walking, biking, kayaking and sailing.

ecoming a teacher was not Chris Palau’s original career plan. A former employee of Silver Springs Natures Theme Park in Ocala, she wanted to one day work in the education department at a zoo. But when the park became a state park, Palau moved to Daytona and began working at Seabreeze High School in 2014. She started with the Seabreeze Orchestra and Band Association Colorguard. Four years later, she moved to the front desk. Then, the attendance office the next year. “During that time, I got to know the students, staff, and the overall rhythm of the school, and it sparked something in me that I didn’t even realize I was missing,” Palau said. “Multiple people kept encouraging me to use my teaching degree, and after a lot of thought (and some gentle pushing), I finally decided to step into the classroom in 2021.” That’s when she realized how much she loved teaching. “Teaching allowed me to connect with students in meaningful ways, support them through challenges, and help them see possibilities they didn’t know they had,” Palau said. “It quickly became more than a career shift — it became something deeply

fulfilling, something I didn’t even know I needed.” She’s currently a high school Support Facilitation teacher for biology and environmental science, and also serves as an IEP case manager. She’s been teaching now for five years, and the nomination of Teacher of the Year makes her feel humbled and honored. It’s also made her realize it’s OK to be recognized. “To be recognized by my fellow teachers, the people who see the early mornings, the long days, and the work that often happens quietly behind the scenes — means more than I can fully express,” Palau said. The support of her fellow Seabreeze faculty and staff has been one of her major motivators. They’ve seen her at her

best and worst moments, she said. Like, when she unexpectedly lost her husband. “My life experiences have helped me to motivate the students to succeed not just academically but in their lives,” Palau said. “The unexpected can happen at any time and sometimes students just need someone to listen not just teach. When students know you care about their well-being, not just their grades, their confidence and engagement soar.” That’s why Palau also cosponsors the Seabreeze Closet, which helps supply students with personal care items and clothing, from socks to prom dresses. In her five years of teaching, Palau said she’s learned a lot — about education, of course, but also about resilience, empathy and students potential. Seeing them overcome challenges and go on to succeed is one of the most rewarding experiences for Palau. Her favorite parts of being a teacher are those success stories. “Seeing their pride in themselves — and knowing I played even a small role in helping them believe in their abilities — is something I will never take for granted,” Palau said. The Ormond Beach Historical Society hosted its 18th annual Tour of Homes on Saturday, Dec. 13, beginning at the Anderson-Price Memorial Building. President Mary Smith opened the building early in the morning as volunteers and local craft vendors prepared for the event’s 9:30 a.m. opening.

The Tour of Homes, conceived by Joyce Benedict and produced by more than 80 volunteers, is one of Ormond Beach’s most cherished holiday traditions. The tour offers a rare opportunity to visit some of the Ormond Beach’s most beautiful properties, blending historic residences with striking modern homes. This year’s featured locations included the Nathan Cobb Cottage, the Ormond Yacht Club, and Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery, all opened to the community to celebrate the area’s rich history. Participants checked in at the Anderson-Price Memorial Building to receive wristbands and tour booklets, with complimentary shuttle buses running throughout the day. A new Fortune 1,000 company could be filling in the empty storefront in International Speedway Square in Daytona Beach. The shopping plaza was recently purchased by DLC Management, a national company that owns retail centers, as part of a $429 million, multistate acquisition in Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Texas, according to a DLC Management press release. DLC CEO Adam Ifshin told the Observer that the Daytona Beach property was included in the purchase. “This is a high quality asset in a market that we know very well, a market that we’ve sought to invest in for a very long time, and it’s anchored by tenants with whom we have large, significant pre-existing relationships,” Ifshin said. Ifshin said DLC is in talks with a “named, household brand, Fortune 1,000 company” to fill in the storefront that use to house a Conn’s HomePlus before the company went bankrupt. Ifshin said he could not provide much information about the prospective tenant but said it was a company DLC does a lot of business with. “We hope to be able to announce prior to the end of the first quarter of 2026 who that is,” he said. “It’s going to

This is DLC’s first property in Daytona Beach but, Ifshin said, DLC is familiar with the market of a Florida retail center through its other Florida properties. The Daytona Beach property is DLC’s 10th Florida property. Ifshin said the Daytona Beach property is what DLC calls “secondary markets,” that are not as large as markets in New York or Miami, but are still driving traffic. DLC regularly likes to invest in these secondary markets, he said. “We like to go to markets

that have special drivers of traffic,” he said. The International Speedway Square has a unique driver of traffic through the draw of the International Speedway and the growing college campus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The International Speedway Square has a variety of shops already installed in the plaza: Haverty’s Furniture, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Michaels, Five Below, Total Wine, Shoe Carnival and more. All the guys here have done a fantastic job working hard over the last couple of weeks to get the

Ormond Beach resident Danyelle Stalk was the first person in line for the opening. She had been in line since 1 a.m. “I like that it’s a new location,” she said, adding that she lives near both Ormond stores. “... For me it’s good either way, but I like that it’s going to be brand new.” Stalk decided to attend the opening thanks to her friend, Danyelle Rodrigue, whose mom used to wait in line for store openings with Rodrigue’s grandmother. They’re continuing the family tradition: Rodrigue’s mom and stepdad were just a few spots down in the line of shoppers. “We made it like a little fun thing,” Rodrigue said.

The Volusia Flagler Advanced Practice Nursing Council recently donated over $1,000 worth of toys to Bunnell Elementary and Palm Terrace Elementary. This is part of the organization’s annual celebration of giving back to the community, said board member Tina Carlyle, of Ormond Beach, in an email to the Observer. She and Sharon James purchased the gifts for children, using funds raised during the council’s annual summit. “The Volusia Flagler Advanced Practice Nursing Council makes it a big deal annually to give back to the community,” Carlyle said.

Future Chipotle on Palm Coast Parkway could open next summer Palm Coast’s future Chipotle that will be located on the southwest corner of Palm Coast Parkway and northbound Belle Terre Parkway could open over the summer of 2026. During a technical site plan application review at the Palm Coast Planning Board meeting on Dec. 17, a representative for the property owner said the contractor will be ready to begin construction after New Year’s Day, with an estimated completion of June or July. The previous building on the site, which used to be a Squirrel gas station, has recently been demolished. The property has been vacant since 2011. According to the Dec. 17 meeting documents, the new Chipotle building will be 2,400 square feet in size and include outdoor seating and a drive-thru area for customers to pick up their mobile orders. According to the technical site plan, the developer will be upgrading the southwest corner of the property to include two benches and a pre-cast fountain at the intersection corner. Other improvements will include improving the radius of the turns into the corner

property. The gas tanks underneath the lot had previously been filled in with a sand mixture approved by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the representative said, and the new property owner — who purchased it in 2023 — has the appropriate closure permits in hand.

Palm Coast Dunkin’ celebrates reopening after remodeling Dunkin’ celebrated the grand re-opening of one of its Palm Coast locations after a remodeling. The franchise location, at 7 N. Old Kings Road, Suite 7, had a holiday-themed celebration on Sunday, Dec. 21. The Dunkin’ location had giveaways, face painting and family-friendly holiday entertainment. The franchise is owned by ranchise network Nova King Inc., which owns and operates nine Dunkin’ locations in Florida. The 2,300-square-foot restaurant location has been remodeled with a modern design to help “create an approachable, positive and energetic environment,” the press release said. It employs 23 crew members and will be open from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Included in the renovations is a new “innovative tap system” to serve Dunkin’s signature cold

beverages, such as coffees, iced teas, cold brew coffee and nitro infused cold brew coffee, the press release said.

FPC moved to northern football district for 2026 The Florida High School Athletic Association 202627 football classifications and district assignments have been finalized. The only change locally from the frist draft is Flagler Palm Coast moving from a Volusia County district to a district with five opponents from Jacksonville and St. Johns County. FPC won’t be in the same district with Mainland as originally configured. Instead the Bulldogs will be in District 1-6A with Atlantic Coast, Creekside, First Coast, Sandalwood and Tocoi Creek. Class 6A is now the largest classification, for schools with enrollments over 2,400. Orange City University will be the fourth team in District 2-6A with DeLand, Mainland and Spruce Creek. Matanzas will likely accumulate the most miles on its district road trips. The Pirates will be in District 3-5A with Gainesville Buchholz, Ocala Forest, Oakleaf in Clay County and Ocala West Port. Seabreeze will be in District 6-4A with Orlando Bishop Moore, Deltonak New Smyrna Beach and Winter Springs.

Nya Williams wins two Five Star lifting titles

Flagler Palm Coast placed third in both competitions at the Five Star Conference girls weightlifting meet Dec. 17 at DeLand High. Nya Williams was the Bulldogs’ only conference champ, winning both the Olympic and traditional competitions at 119 pounds with a total lift of 335 pounds for both. She had a 145-pound snatch lift and 145-pound bench press to go with a 190-pound clean and jerk. FPC’s Lillian Ames (139 pounds) placed second in both competitions. Cali Weehunt (154) was second in Olympic and third in traditional. Brianna Long placed second in traditional at 169 pounds. Arianna Almeida (199) was second in traditional and fourth in Olympic. Kelsey Coyne (169) and Angelis Rosa (110) placed third in Olympic. Alexcia Liliavois (101) was third in Olympic and fifth in traditional. Lynnsie Jones (183) place fifth in both competitions. Mainland’s Cheylin Grant (unlimited) placed fourth in traditional and fifth in Olympic. Seabreeze’s Camila Arellano (129) placed fourth in both competitions.

The South Atlantic Amateur Championship — the Sally — is turning 100. The women’s amateur golf tournament at Ormond Beach’s Oceanside Country Club began its century run in 1926. The Oceanside Country Club was already 19 years old by then. If you want to get technical, there has not yet been 100 Sally tournaments. Because of World War II, they didn’t hold a tournament in 194346. So, the upcoming tournament may be the 97th Sally, but it has survived 100 years, and it’s considered the oldest amateur golf tournament anywhere in the world hosted at the same location. “That’s male or female,” notes tournament chairman Chuck Grant. “A lot of people keep saying it’s the oldest female tournament, but it’s both genders.” The Sally will celebrate its 100th anniversary Jan. 5-10, 2026. The Member-Sally tournament will be Jan. 6 with the Sally scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 7, to Saturday, Jan. 10. Of course, a lot has changed in 100 years. As the tournament has gotten older, the field has gotten younger. Lexi Thompson, who has 11 career LPGA tournament victories including one major, won the Sally in 2009 when she was just 13 years old. Gianna Clemente won in 2023 when she was 14 and the top-ranked junior player in the nation. Now 17, Clemente announced on Nov. 5 that she is turning pro. Daytona Beach News-Journal columnist Ken Willis has been covering the Sally since 1986. Back then, he said, it was kind of a mixture. “You had some college players, but you had these lifetime amateurs like Lancy Smith and Carol Semple Thompson and Leslie Shannon and that group that were more or less winning,” Willis said. “In the 21st century, you’ve been seeing a lot of college players and a bunch of high school-age players and even young-

er. I mean, they’ve had some hot shots come in there that were 12 or 13 years old.” Players from all over the world come to play the Sally. It used to be part of the Orange Blossom Circuit that included two other Florida tournaments. It was natural for college players to come down on their winter break and play the circuit to prepare for their spring season. In recent years, three to five players from a college program will enter the Sally together, Willis said. “There have been several schools you would see, like the University of Florida might have three or four girls here, or FSU, or Wake Forest,” he said. Ohio State golfer Kary Hollenbaugh won the past two years. Future LPGA stars Christie Kerr, Grace Park, Brooke Henderson, Lexi Thompson and Jessica Korda have won the Sally. Jessica’s younger sister, Nelly Korda, and the winningest LPGA golfer of all time, Kathy Whitworth, played in the Sally. World Golf Hall of Famers Patty Berg (1938 and 1939) and Babe Zaharias (1947) won the Sally and each turned pro the following year. There have been 31 Sally champs who have turned pro. Then there were the lifetime amateurs who came down from up north year after year. Lancy Smith won the Sally six times from 1970 to 1989. Tish Preuss won four out of five years from 1965 to 1969. “In the ’90s, when they started cutting it off at a certain level of play, a lot of the women who came to play in the Sally every year now couldn’t get into it because they

weren’t good enough golfers,” Willis said. “I remember some of them were irritated because they came and they treated it as a social week. And the people running the golf tournament wanted to keep increasing the level of competition.” Grant, the tournament chairman, now reserves 12 spots for Sally veterans, an exemption they’ll keep until they stop playing golf, he said. And once they retire, those spots are given to locals kids. “A club member may know a good young golfer who we’ll invite,” he said. They rest of the 96-player field comes from the junior golf and college rankings. “We’re focused on making it the best tournament it can be,” Grant said. Pat Meyers, an Ormond Beach resident, won the tournament in 1976 at the age of 21. She spoke at the Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce After Hours event, celebrating 100 years of the Sally, hosted by Halifax Health on Dec. 10. “The first year I played was probably 1973. I was young, in high school,” Meyers said. “That was a big deal to be able to get into the Sally if you were a golfer. You would read about it in the paper. It was always on my calendar that, one year, I was going to play in the Sally, and I ended up playing in it for three or four years. When I finally won it, it has marked my career.” She turned pro the year after she won and played on the LPGA Tour for 12 years. Another goal, she said, would have been to remain an amateur and try to get on the U.S. Curtis Cup team. She

said because there were Curtis Cup players in the Sally, she knew she could compete at the highest level. Meyers was asked why the Sally has had such staying power. “No. 1, it’s a class tournament,” she said. “And No. 2, you have the support of the people who run it, who put all the work in behind the scenes. You certainly have the recognition nationwide. And the town’s always been so receiving. Back in the day, businesses would have Sally specials, some little thing that just shows the contestants that the people here really care, and that does bring a player back whether they play well or not.” Email brent@observerlocalnews. com.
