VSO gains reaccreditation For the 10th time, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office has been reaccredited, following a long review of the agency’s policies, procedures and operations by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, according to a press release.

“This latest seal of approval confirms to me that our Sheriff’s Office is providing some of the best law enforcement service in America,” Sheriff Mike Chitwood said. “The men and women who come to work here every day continue to make me extremely proud, and from what I hear in the community, the residents of Volusia County feel the same way.”

The press release states the accreditation is a significant one, as it comes following the implementation of Amendment 10, which separated the department’s operations from county government.

In addition, in 2021, VSO launched a new training academy and negotiated a new union contract with increased pay for deputies.

FDOT study for I-95 interchange underway

Holiday garbage pickup schedule

In August, the Florida Department of Transportation began the first phase of a long awaited transportation project in the city of Ormond Beach: improvements to the I-95 and U.S. 1 interchange.

FDOT is conducting a $2.8 million Project Development and Environmental study for the one-mile segment of U.S. 1, and according to the state department, this study is meant “to accommodate existing and future travel demand and improve safety at the interchange and along U.S. 1.”

A press release addressed to local government officials details that improvements would enhance operational and safety needs while improving traffic flow and better serving regional trips at this interchange, which was designed and built sometime in the late 1950s to early 1960s.

FDOT expects the study to take about two years to complete. The design of the project is expected to cost $3.3 million, and is budgeted for summer 2022. For Ormond Beach Mayor Bill Partington, who serves on the River to Sea Transportation Planning Organization, the project is a long time coming.

“It’s a safety issue as much as anything,” he said. “If you’ve ever been in that area, it just doesn’t function well. It was designed at a time where there was so much less traffic.”

City Commissioner Dwight Selby served on the TPO for four years prior to Partington, and said this project was “a constant drumbeat” for him.

It’s a “very dangerous, old interchange,” and now that funding has been secured for the first two steps of the process, Selby is confident the project will move forward steadily.

“The good news is that the process has started, as opposed to when we were just talking about it, trying to

Both Selby and Partington credited the city’s transportation consultant, Maryam Ghyabi, with raising awareness of the need for the project at the state level.

Skies were gray and the weather looked foreboding, as the Riverfest Seafood Festival kicked off its weekend return on Saturday, Nov. 20, after a COVID-19 hiatus was imposed the previous year.

“We were a little bit nervous about the weather at the beginning of the weekend,” said Becky Parker, Ormond Beach Mainstreet’s event organizer. “But I thought people would come out regardless. As we saw with the Celtic Festival, it was packed. Everybody was just ready to be out and about.”

This was Parker’s seventh year helping to organize the event that has been well-attended for 12 years.

Approximately 100 volunteers were utilized over the course of the weekend to setup, run the children’s events, offer vendor support, man beverage booths and break down.

Family members usually join together when volunteering for the festival.

Parker’s father flies in to Ormond Beach three times per year just to assist with anything she may need for the city’s annual festivals.

“I’ve heard people say, ‘Don’t go around Becky during festival time; you’ll get dragged into volunteering’,” she said as she laughed.

Over two dozen vendors packed the Rockefeller Gardens with a variety of savory food offerings ranging from Seashore Seafood’s lobster mac-n-cheese to Greg’s Seafood & BBQ’s frog legs basket along with a multitude of sweet treats including Jeremiah’s Italian Ice and fried Oreos.

Greg Lewis, the owner of Greg’s Seafood & BBQ, started his business 15 years ago after his uncle, John Watson, taught him everything he knew about becoming a food vendor. Lewis assisted Watson when he would travel to Jacksonville to cook at the NFL Jaguars’ home games.

Currently Lewis works for the city of Ormond Beach in the stormwater department during the week and on weekends, travels to Tallahassee, Miami or anywhere his mobile restaurant is requested.

“Yes. I work a lot,” he said. “Usually seven days per week. I love it. I love this festival. Always a great turnout.”

Vintage music and draft beer offerings created a haven for adults to enjoy each others company along the picturesque Halifax River. Kids also had a chance to enjoy outdoor activities at the Kid Zone under the Granada Bridge and by participating in the Kid Fish clinics at Fortunato Park where they were giving out free fishing poles. Parents could stop by to chat with Delores Cope at the Early Learning Coalition bus to discuss educational options for their children while the kids played at the interactive stations.

Travis Konarik and his wife, Kristy Knight, were the first volunteers to setup the Kid Fish clinics seven years ago. In the past, Fish Florida donated fishing poles along with grants which would be used to obtain 300 poles to be given out at the festival. This year, the poles arrived late, which made it necessary for Ormond Beach Mainstreet to purchase them in time for Konarik and Knight to put them together at their house.

The late arrivals will be used for next year’s clinics.

Veteran Thad Harris, owner of the Harri Axe—a mobile axe throwing business, had a line at his booth. His trailer consists of an axe throwing cage large enough to accommodate two throwers simultaneously.

Harris had reached out to Ormond Beach Mainstreet to participate in his first event — the Celtic Festival and followed it up with the Riverfest.

Siblings Noah and Samantha Stevens were excited to see Harris again.

After a few rounds of axe throwing rivalry, the two said it was fun and would get their parents to stop the car if they saw the cage during their travels. The brother and sister were all smiles as they walked away.

Ormond Beach pastry chef to appear in new Disney+ ‘Foodtastic’ series Alejandra Galan will appear in the series’ Avengersthemed episode.

Alejandra Galan is no stranger to baking TV shows.

A past contestant on shows like the Food Network’s “Chocolate Meltdown: Hershey’s After Dark” and “El desafío de Buddy: Latinoamérica,” the Latin American version of the “Next Great Baker,” Galan is familiar with the standard premises of these type of shows. But when an opportunity with Disney arose, the Ormond Beach resident was in for a unique experience.

Galan, who is a pastry chef, will be competing in the Disney+ original series “Foodtastic,” which will premiere on the streaming service on Dec. 15. The show is hosted by actress Keke Palmer, and features global food artists creating sculptures and scenes using only food.

Produced by Endemol Shine North America, Flour Shop founder Amirah Kassem and NYC’s City Cakes founder chef Benny Rivera serve as food experts on the series.

But it’s not your average cooking show. Galan said viewers should expect a lot of surprises along the way.

“I was very grateful to have the opportunity to be chosen as a person from Latin America, and to have the experience to live like a theme park in a baking environment, because that’s what it was,” Galan said. “It was magical.”

DESIGNING MOMENTS

A native of Colombia, Galan’s love of pastry began when she was young. Her parents own a cheesecake factory in the country, and she said she knew early on that she wanted to follow in their footsteps.

In 2010, she opened her own bakery in Bogota, Colombia, and nine years later moved to the U.S. Prior to studying to become a

pastry chef, Galan did work as an industrial engineer. But she dreamed of being an artist, and found that with food, she could do both. Plus, Galan said playing with food is much more fun.

“What I love is to design moments,” she said. “So if you go to a party — someone’s birthday, or something — and that moment when you give them your incredible cake or whatever you made for them and they don’t believe that is actually edible, that’s completely priceless. And that’s something that they’re never going to forget.

It’s a moment you actually design, more than the cake.”

Galan will appear in the Avengers-themed episode, in which teams were tasked with coming up with a creative idea to showcase two Avengers saving a city from an attack.

The only problem was that Galan had never seen any of the movies in the Marvel Cinematic Uni-

verse franchise. So her first order of business was making sure she knew everything she could about the Avengers by watching all of the movies. Her favorite Avenger? Iron Man. ‘ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE’

The “Foodtastic” set provided contestants with endless ingredients and equipment, which Galan described as “heaven for a chef.”

Being on a Disney show was a dream, she said. Growing up, traveling to Disney World from Colombia to visit the theme parks was special, and now as an adult that lives within driving distance of the parks, Galan said she turns into a child every time she visits. Plus, “Foodtastic” is the only show she’s ever seen where food of all kinds are incorporated, and she’s excited to see the creations made by competitors in other episodes.

After all, like Galan, they were all placed into teams with strangers

where the only thing they had in common was their passion for food.

“It was a huge challenge, but I would take from that, that anything is possible,” Galan said. “That was actually the name of my team — anything is possible.”

Since moving to the area in 2019, Galan said people have welcomed her and opened doors for her which have led to this opportunity. She thanks them, and said she has seen how this community help others grow, especially within the food industry. Though she doesn’t have her own bakery here yet, she said that is the future plan.

“I believe if I was still in Colombia, this opportunity would have never happened.”

Promise fulfilled Jewish Federation upholds Gloria Max’s legacy with Thanksgiving turkey distribution With the help of volunteers, about 260 turkeys were handed out to local families in need.

As volunteers with the Jewish Federation aided in handing out bags of fruit, vegetables and sweets outside the nonprofit’s Jerry Doliner Food Bank on Tuesday, Nov. 23, they wished families a “Happy Thanksgiving.”

One man, after having placed a bottle of juice into his shopping cart — already full with food — smiled at a volunteer and said, “It’s thanks to you.”

The Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler Counties has annually given away turkeys and groceries to families in need for Thanksgiving, and this year was no exception. A little over two months after the death of the organization’s executive director, Gloria Max, volunteers banded together to make sure her mission to feed the less fortunate in the community lived on.

keep it going,” said Marvin Miller, president of the Jewish Federation. “With Janice taking over and operating the food bank side of it and all the volunteers you see out there, that made it worthwhile, that made it go. They all stepped up, which was wonderful.”

Janice Sumner is the nonprofit’s executive secretary, and she said it’s “wonderful” to be able to able to carry on Max’s legacy.

Prior to joining the Jewish Federation, Sumner said she had always wanted to do social work in the community. She just never had the chance to do so, and Max gave her that opportunity.

“To be able to carry that on is just fabulous,” Sumner said.

About 25 volunteers helped distribute 260 turkeys at the Jerry Doliner Food Bank, located at 470 Andalusia Ave. People were already lined up outside the food bank well before the giveaway was scheduled to start, and both Miller and Sumner fielded phone calls from people advising they were running late, and to please hold on to their turkey until they could arrive at the food bank.

It was business as usual for a Thanksgiving turkey distribution.

“We’re a small part of the community, the Jewish Federation,” Miller said. “It makes us feel so good to reach out to so many families.”

The Jewish Federation’s Jerry Doliner Food Bank helps feed about 200 people a week in the community, regardless of race, religion or ethnicity. It’s a labor of love, said Miller, as the nonprofit absorbs all of its administration costs to make sure 100% of donations go toward helping the community.

“The public knows what we do, and they support us,” he said. “They know we’re here, and this Jewish Federation is supported by a big part of the Christian community, so it’s wonderful to work together with them, and that’s the rewarding part: helping each other.”

Sumner attributes the Jewish Federation’s success to the community’s support. Every dollar received is put to good use, she said.

“The continuation of that support has been invaluable and will remain invaluable,” Sumner said. “... Gloria used to say that we could not do what we do without you, and it’s true.”

LETTERS Say no to the Ormond Beach runway extension Dear Editor: I would like to rebut the misinformation included in letters in the Nov. 8 issue of the Ormond Beach Observer regarding Ormond Beach Airport runway.

Neither of the writers live within the area which is most impacted by near constant noise of airplanes.

This may explain why they are not part of the “vocal reactionary element” that opposes the extension which will make the noise problem worse. It doesn’t bother them, so why should they be concerned?

Condescending remarks will not make us go away.

The flight schools at the airport

Observer are currently training pilots to fly small, light aircraft. Those pilots will require additional training to fly larger, multi-engine and jet aircraft. What better place to do it than Ormond Beach, with a newly extended runway? These larger planes are louder than the majority of what we have now and will fly in larger patterns between touch-andgo practice. This means that they will impact a larger area and more Ormond Beach residents with their noise.

Will this happen? There is nothing to stop it. A local developer is already building new hangars to accommodate them.

Even if the flight schools do not move to larger aircraft, the longer runway will be accompanied by a

longer taxiway, which will facilitate a greater frequency of training flights.

One writer claims, “The corporate jets are quieter, will take off further away from any residential area, and they don’t take off and land all throughout the day!” A little research will show that this is a false statement; the corporate jets produce louder and more piercing noise than the majority of the light planes using the airport today. The reason for the extension is that the larger aircraft need the extra runway to take off. They will certainly be using all that length, so they will not be taking off farther away. And the bulk of the people affected by the noise are not those immediately adjacent to the runway; they are the

thousands of people living in one of the 34 subdivisions that the planes fly over. If the flight schools do include the larger planes, then they will be flying throughout the day.

Having more flights will increase the chances of a crash into a neighborhood, and bigger planes will cause more damage on the ground if that happens.

Please tell your city commissioner that you oppose the extension of the Ormond Airport runway.

K-9S HONORED WITH PURPLE HEART MEDALS On Nov. 17, Sheriff Mike Chitwood and Georgia nonprofit organization Irondog K9 International honored K-9s Endo and Ax for their actions responding to an armed carjacking incident in Deltona in September.

Endo and Ax were each shot while working to apprehend the fleeing suspect.

Both K-9s received the Purple Heart from the Sheriff’s Office and a Medal of Honor from Irondog K9.

The Purple Heart is the retiring K-9 Endo’s second since 2016, when he was shot in the neck while responding to a domestic disturbance call with his handler, Deputy Brett Whitson. K-9 Ax has been back on duty with his handler, Deputy AJ Davis.

In presenting their medals at this morning’s ceremony at the Deputy Stephen Saboda Training Center, Chitwood recounted how one of the first messages he received following the carjacking incident was from Irondog K9, offering to cover the dogs’ medical bills.

“It was this incredible, heartwarming email saying that whatever your organization needs, whatever Endo and Ax need, we got you,” Chitwood said. “We got medical bills, we got training — you tell us what you want.”

Irondog K9 International has contributed more than $25,000 to Volusia Sheriff’s Office K-9s and handlers since the September incident, including about $4,000 in medical bills, $4,200 in first aid kits and more than $18,000 for a 3-day K-9 medic training class for every single VSO K-9 handler. The class is underway now.

“Our job is to support these law enforcement K-9s and their handlers, and we are so excited to be able to be here for them,” said Irondog K9’s Mitzi Nash.

Irondog K9 International is a 501c3 organization that supports K-9 teams across the country by providing equipment like first aid and trauma kits, sponsoring training events like this week’s seminar, and paying for on-duty injury vet bills.

Last week, the Sons of the American Legion Ormond Beach Post 267 donated $500 to Halifax Hospice.

This is part of the group’s effort to donate to local organizations throughout the year to help veterans and the community.

Ormond Beach author Sarah Beliza Tucker recently received the Mom’s Choice Awards Honoring Excellence Seal of Approval for her series, “The Adventures of Harry and Friends.”

The MCA evaluates products and services created for children, families and educators, a press release states. The organization is based in the U.S. and has reviewed thousands of entires from over 55 countries. To be considered for an award, entrants must submit three identical samples of their work to be evaluated before sent to the MCA Executive Committee for final review and approval.

The testing samples of “The Adventures of Harry and Friends” will be donated to schools, libraries, hospitals and nonprofit organizations.

Just in time for the holiday, the Rotary Club of Daytona Beach West packed 25 Thanksgiving meals for families in need at the club’s last meeting as part of their Thanksgiving Basket Brigade.

Rotarians came together and brought in food and gift cards for the cause, and boxes were delivered on Saturday, Nov. 20 to families’ doorsteps, according to the club’s Facebook Page.

RAISING FUNDS FOR BREAST CANCER The American Legion Auxiliary Unit at Post 267 hosted a breast cancer fundraiser on Oct. 23, and raised over $10,000, according to an email.

The fundraiser has a German theme and was called “Breast-toberfest.” Members presented a check to Jennifer Peludat of the Think Pink Fund of Halifax Hospital for $10,205.

A CALL FOR LOCAL ARTISTS The Volusia County’s ECHO Gallery Committee is inviting qualified organizations and individuals to submit a proposal for a new exhibition at the ECHO Gallery at the Ocean Center, located at 101 N. Atlantic Ave. According to a county press release, all works submitted should depict the art of sports photography within Volusia County. The deadline for submissions is March 18. Selected works with credits will be displayed for about 45 consecutive weeks. FIRE IN THE HOLE 12:15 a.m. — First block of John Anderson Drive Vandalism. Police suspect three young men used fireworks to vandalize the men’s restroom at a park, causing about $500 worth of damage, according to an incident report.

Two witnesses who were walking in the park saw the men get out of a dark-colored four-door car and run toward the bathrooms, the report details. A few minutes later, they ran back to the car and witnesses heard them say they had to leave “quickly.”

The witnesses decided to investigate because of the men’s strange behavior and discovered the men’s restroom was filled with smoke and that the toilet had been shattered.

Police responded to the scene and noticed “shredded bits of blue paper” scattered over the bathroom as well as a scorch mark on the sink.

The reporting officer determined it looked like the men, suspected to be between 18 and 20 years old, tried to shatter the sink and toilet using fireworks.

chapter’s youngest member at its November meeting.

Lauren Weber is a senior at Mainland High School and is dualenrolled at Daytona State College.

NEW PATIENT REGISTRATION 12:17 p.m. — 1400 block of West Granada Boulevard Fraud. A former employee of a local medical spa is suspected of altering about 20 patient records by changing their names in their system after she quit her job.

According to a police report, the 39-year-old employee had been called in to the office to discuss a negative performance review when she announced she wished to give her two-week notice.

Later that night, management was made aware of negative social media posts about the business that “were vulgar and defamatory.” The next morning, the employee was seen coming into the building where she collected more of her things before leaving. While there, a front desk employee noticed that there were patients scheduled whose information had been altered. For example, one name was changed to “Lollipop Kid.” The employee also changed her own name in the system to “Donnie Darko.”

Police report the investigation is ongoing.

REPEAT OFFENDER 9:06 p.m. — Intersection of Main Trail and North Nova Road DUI. Police arrested a 72-year-old Ormond Beach man for drunk driving who claimed he could have been arrested for the same crime 27 times in his life. He had two prior DUI arrests and no convictions.

According to the arrest report, the man was seen speeding westbound on Main Trail after he crashed into the pedestrian crosswalk signal at the intersection of North Nova Road.

A witness who saw him bleeding after the crash said the man told her not to call police.

Another witness said the man almost crashed into him on Nottingham Drive. The car was smoking and the man hit a trash can as he drove away, according to the witness.

When the reporting officer made contact with the man, he noticed that the man was visibly intoxicated.

The officer asked the manto perform field sobriety exercises, and the man claimed he had numerous balance issues, but didn’t disclose what these issues were. “They are what they are,” he told the officer, according to his arrest report.

He was taken to jail.

his holiday season, Ormond Beach has its very own gingerbread house.

Rose Villa Southern Table and Bar, located at 43 W. Granada Blvd., has transformed into a “Gingerbread Fantasy” by way of a decorative light display, and from now through Jan. 9, it will offer locals the chance to decorate their own gingerbread houses. It’s a unique experience the restaurant is excited to offer, said Pat Sullivan, Rose Villa operating manager, as there aren’t many opportunities to decorate a gingerbread house while inside a house decorated like a gingerbread house.

Sullivan thought of the idea shortly after last year’s holiday season when he saw Rose Villa from across the street. He thought to himself, “The restaurant looks like a gingerbread house.” With COVID-19 having impacted how people celebrated in 2020, he knew he wanted to innovate and implement new ideas for this Christmas season.

“I was thinking to myself, ‘Christmas is going to be big in 2021. Let’s try something different,’” Sullivan said.

To celebrate the first “Gingerbread Fantasy” display, artist Perago also created a painting of the decorated Rose Villa onsite.

A FAMILY ACTIVITY

On Friday, Nov. 19, the first day of the Gingerbread Fantasy display, one Ormond Beach family got to be the first to decorate a gingerbread house.

Katie and Matt Hoffman and their 7-year-old son, Carter, have decorated gingerbread houses at home in the past, and when Katie Hoffman saw on Facebook that Rose Villa was looking for families to participate, she contacted the restaurant. She informed Carter of what they would do, and he worried that the gingerbread house would fall apart. They always do, Carter told his mom.

“I’m like, ‘No, they’re already going to have the house together. So you just decorate it,’” Katie Hoffman said. “Because that’s the fun part.”

As Carter focused on piping icing onto the house, laughing as it slid off before he could place candies, his father Matt Hoffman said it’s always enjoyable to see him unleash his inner artist.

“He’s such a creative kid, and it’s so much fun to see where he takes things,” he said.

Decorating a gingerbread house is available daily from 10 a.m. to noon by reservation only. It costs $99 and groups of up to 16 people will be accommodated. Rose Villa has 800 gingerbread houses ready to be assembled and decorated.

The holiday display was installed in two days by B Morrow Productions, a design production company that does displays for resorts, museums and theme parks. Producer Erin Pyne said the team installed over 10,000 lights.

“It’s just a great opportunity for us at B Morrow Productions to come and transform the beautiful Rose Villa into a gingerbread house,” she said.

Beyond the lights decorating the historic home, which served as a bed and breakfast for rich and famous visitors of Ormond Beach starting in 1901, the Gingerbread Fantasy display consists of topiary snowmen, themed glass windows, lollipops and gingerbread men — one of which sports a handlebar mustache in homage to local developer Bill Jones, who restored the house in 2007.

Jones stopped by the restaurant on the first day of the display and praised the idea.

“It brings out the kid in me,” he said.

Jones, who has restored and built many of the buildings in Ormond Beach’s downtown — including 31 Supper Club, the Ormond Garage and the Pumphouse, which is under construction — said restoring Rose Villa was a project that took almost three years. He and his team restored original fixtures and doors and brought the house back to its former glory.

Jones said he fell in love with Ormond Beach in 1986 when he moved from the state of New York.

“Slowly but surely,” he said he’s been working to transform the downtown into a place where mom-and-pop businesses thrive.

“I figured, let’s build something,” Jones said. “Let’s make a downtown out of it. I’ve been trying to do that with the help of all these guys.”

ave you ever seen blueprints as art?

The Ormond Memorial Art Museum hosted a twoday workshop on Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 17-18 in the museum gardens, where a group of six locals learned the cyanotype process, which according to the museum’s webpage, is one of the oldest photographic printing processes. It can be used to capture blueprint-like

works of botanical specimens or copy drawings, and the process involves exposing treated paper or cloth to UV light to produce a cyan-blue print.

The workshop was led by Catherine Cross Tsintzos, a North Carolina artist who focuses on environmental and social issues, as well as traditional fine art and sustainability.

Seabreeze’s girls soccer players weren’t just playing for themselves against Flagler Palm Coast on Saturday, Nov. 20. They were also playing for dozens of their predecessors.

The Sandcrabs’ 5-0 victory at FPC’s Sal Campanella Stadium was their first against the Bulldogs in 11 seasons.

“This is a big deal for us,” said Emily Myers, who scored two goals for Seabreeze (2-2).

“This year, we were really prepared for this game,” Myers said. “We came in knowing that whoever scored the first goal, that’s where the momentum was going.”

Sure enough, after an even battle for much of the first half, sophomore Kylie Watson scored off a drop ball in

the corner, and, minutes later, Myers made it 2-0 with a shot that curved into the upper left corner of the goal.

Myers then made it 3-0 early in the second half off a corner kick.

“Our objective is to score at the beginning and end of each half,” Myers said.

The game was the finale of the FPC Soccer Showcase, although officially it was not part of the event.

The game was rescheduled from Nov. 15 and added to the weekend’s slate after Showcase participant Vero Beach had a conflict and could not play a second game.

“They weren’t part of the Showcase,” FPC coach Pete Hald said of the Sandcrabs. “But the way they played, they should have been.”

The Showcase featured three reigning state champs in Bartram Trail, Ponte Vedra and Lakeland Christian. A fourth Showcase team, Jacksonville Bolles, lost in the regional finals last season but had won state championships from 2018 to 2020.

said, besides providing a showcase for area soccer connoisseurs, is to increase the strength of schedule for the Bulldogs and other participating teams.

Strength of schedule is one of the criteria for rankings that decide atlarge berths into the playoffs after the season.

On the first day of the Showcase, Ponte Vedra defeated FPC 4-0, handing the Bulldogs (3-2-1) their first loss of the season. FPC played the two games without several injured players. Freshman goalkeeper Saige Strickland was playing in her first varsity games after starter Kaitlyn Holley suffered a concussion against DeLand on Nov. 16.

The win was the second in a row

for the Sandcrabs, who shut out Gainesville 4-0 on Nov. 16 for their first victory.

“We’ve been picking up momentum,” said Seabreeze coach Eli Freidus.

That was evident during the contest as Seabreeze dominated the second half, with Isabella Castillo and Nickole Dane adding goals.

“Our defense was on point. Our midfield was winning all the balls,” Seabreeze goalkeeper Avery Dellinger said. “I had nothing to do in the second half.”

Since 2010, Seabreeze had tied FPC several times and lost some close games, including a 1-0 decision last season, but the Sandcrabs had not won in 18 straight contests between the two Five Star Conference rivals.

“This is just the beginning,” Myers said.

“We’re looking forward to a really good season,” Dellinger added.

The Sandcrabs will have a tough road match against Ponte Vedra on Monday, Nov. 29. FPC (3-2-1) will try to regroup again host Orange City University on Nov. 29.

Seabreeze girls basketball team storms Pine Ridge with a 45-28 win The Sandcrabs girls basketball team turned up the heat and won Nov. 19, at Pine Ridge High School, in Deltona.

Look out, lady ballers, the Sandcrabs have a faster lineup that should be here for the next four years.

After a loss to the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind on Tuesday, Nov. 16, senior Ocean Summers led the charge against the Panthers the following Friday with 16 points resulting in a 45-28 win for Seabreeze on the Pine Ridge High School courts in Deltona.

“We started off slow tonight,” Sandcrabs’ head coach John Rogers said. “I benched a couple of players for disciplinary reasons. Once I put the starters on the floor, they turned the game around.”

Rogers changed the trajectory of the team from placing last in districts during their 2018 season to placing fourth when he started coaching the varsity in 2019. Last season they finished 12-7 but lost a district game to Matanzas, putting them in third behind the Pirates. His plan for this long 24-game season is to focus on the “second season”—the district playoffs.

Summers, who is sporting a new flower tattoo on her right shoulder, has been hitting the weights and working on her sprints in preparation for her last year playing high school ball. As the team captain, she knows the importance of leading by example.

sync up and do the same thing,” she said. “My goal is to go as hard as I can, get as many wins as I can and then go to play college ball. I’m not sure where I want to go. I just know I want to go to school for nursing.”

Two freshmen dominated the ’Crabs full-court press: Keeva Heggins and Ylan Phan. Heggins has played since the sixth grade, and Phan has been playing competitively for two years. Per Rogers, both bring heart and hustle to Seabreeze’s game.

“The plan is to win, to hustle and put it all on the court,” Heggins said.

After Thanksgiving break, the Sandcrabs will face off against Matanzas, on Nov. 30, at home.

Flagler Beach will hold a First Friday event at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 3 in Veterans Park, with the city’s Starry Night lights show following at 6 p.m. with the lighting of the Flagler Beach pier, Mayor Suzie Johnston said on the radio program.

This year, the city is adding a new feature: “Deck the Chairs,” which adorns the city’s life guard towers.

Flagler Beach will hold its annual “Holiday at the Beach” parade on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 1 p.m. The holiday parade in 2020 was canceled due to COVID-19, and this year’s parade will be slightly shorter in length than previous parades, as a precaution for the delta variant.

Flagler Beach Mayor Suzie Johnston stated: “This year will be magical in Flagler Beach, as we have all been

waiting to return to normalcy.

The Starlight Festival will look a little different from previous years. Instead of a parade, the floats will park along Central Park. Guests can view the floats at their leisure while merrily strolling through Town Center. The new layout will only require one street to be closed and

will give visitors the freedom to come for the fun and leave when they are done.

All live entertainment performances will be scheduled in front of the Christmas tree in Central Park. This gives proud friends and relatives a designated time to come and cheer for their entertainer.

Celebrating Hanukkah in Palm Coast MARYLYNNE NEWMARK GUEST WRITER

Unlike Holy Days such as Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur that are fervently observed by Jews around the world, Hanukkah is a festive funpacked holiday.

Hanukkah, which means “Dedication,” commemorates a jubilant victory in 164 B.C. when the Maccabees, a small band of Jewish warriors, defeated the great Syrian army that had invaded Judea and destroyed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.

In the cleanup process after the Syrians left, it was discovered that the highly refined oil needed to keep the Eternal Light glowing near the Holy Ark had been defiled and poured out. It would take eight days to purify a new supply. Matisyahu, the high priest, noticed a minute amount of oil remaining in the meniscus of one jar. He instructed that even this small amount of oil should be lit by the ark for as long as it would last. The significance of the victory became even more joyous as those few drops of oil kept the Eternal Light burning for the full eight days that were needed to complete the purification process.

So, the story of these miracles of Hanukkah were passed down thousands of years from generation to generation signifying that The Holy One, Blessed Be He, was with the people, reminding us that great miracles happened there and still can happen everywhere.

This year, beginning Sunday, Nov. 28, celebrations will commence around the world with Jewish families lighting the first of their eight candles, eating yummy oily foods like potato pancakes (latkes) and jelly doughnuts (sufganiyot) along with brisket or chicken dishes. Although it is traditional to give charity and gifts of holiday money (Hanukkah gelt), kids today receive toys, books, dreidels and other joyful playthings.

Hanukkah-in-a-Box pickup at Temple Beth Shalom on Sunday and Monday, Nov. 28 and 29. The box includes latkes prepared by Rabbi Rose Eberle, her family and temple members along with sour cream and appllesauce, as well as doughnuts, chocolate Hanukkah gelt and some other surprises. However, Hanukkah-in-a-Box must be pre-ordered at the Temple Beth Shalom office (386-445-3006) with a donation payable to the temple for $18 per box

by Friday, Nov. 20.

Also at Temple Beth Shalom on Sunday evening, Nov. 28 at 7 p.m., Rose will host a communitywide Menorah Lighting Service during which attendees are invited to bring their own Menorahs to light the first night candle together as a temple family. The temple choir will sing Hanukkah songs that are traditional, as well as humorous upbeat songs introduced in recent years by comtemporary Jewish vocalists.

Attendees will be encouraged to join in. Refreshments will follow. To protect members, proof of vaccination is

required. Masks are optional for the vaccinated.

On Monday, Nov. 29, at 5 p.m., Rabbi Levi Ezaqui, of Chabad of Palm Coast, will welcome crowds to European Village for a Grand Menorah Lighting on a specially built 8-foot high Menorah. Mayor David Alfin and Sheriff Rick Staly have accepted an invitation to attend.

“This is a special outdoor celebration for everyone to enjoy,” says Ezaqui. “There will be fun for all. We will have live entertainment with music and a spectacular comedy magic show on center stage. Kids can enjoy riding around the village on our mini-train. There will be face painting, balloon twisting, as well as visiting with the small animals from alocal petting zoo.”

In addition, Ezaqui says that Starbucks will be on the premises to warm the soul while attendees enjoy free latkes and doughnuts supplied by event sponsors Palm Coast Pharmacy and Virtual Homes Realty.

“We welcome the entire Palm Coast community to share in the fun

of this fabulous holiday,” says Ezaqui. “Our event is open to everyone.

There is no charge to attend.”

Celebrations do not stop there. On Wednesday night, Dec. 1, Rebbitzen Tzivie Ezaqui will host a Ladies Hanukkah Party for Fourth Night Fun as Barbra Gary, local certified ZenTangle instructor will awaken artistic skills while leading attendees through a process of ZenTangle artistry to create unique Hanukkah Menorahs. Continuing in the holiday spirit, the Men’s Club of Temple Beth Shalom is sponsoring a Hanukkah Shmoozer for members on Thursday, Dec. 2 at 10 a.m. At this event, bagels, cream cheese and lox will be served along with (you guessed it) jelly doughnuts.

“As much fun as we have during Hanukkah,” says Robert Arkin, president of Temple Beth Shalom, “there is a deeper message behind this holiday. The Maccabees were a handful of men, but they were determined and had faith they could succeed. With only a few drops of oil, the high priest said that whatever we had would be a dedication of renewal until we could produce what we could.

“They had determination, faith and trust in The Almighty. As a result, miracles happened. Looking back at history,” continued Arkin, “perhaps determination, faith and trust is a formula that could apply to solving some of the fractured issues confronting us today. Who knows?

It might bring on some prime time miracles.”

Palm Coast’s Priscilla Nets will join Linda Cole, “The Queen of Jazz,” and Flagler Broadcasting General Manager David Ayers for live coverage of the 38th-annual Palm Holiday Boat Parade, considered the largest boat parade in Central Florida. Coverage on KOOL-FM, 100.9, begins at 6 p.m.

Marked by festive parties and gatherings all along the Parade route, the parade will be accompanied by boats from the Flagler Sheriff’s Office, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Service, and TowBoatUS. Grand Marshalls will be Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly and David Alfin, Mayor of Palm Coast.

Departing from the Cimmaron Basin, the parade will pass the Tidelands, Marina Cove, the Hammock, Yacht Harbor Village, and the Palm Coast Legacy Vacation Resort. It will then proceed under the Hammock Dunes Bridge along St. Joe’s Walkway and Canopy Walk, pass by Island Estates, Waterfront Park, and Grand Haven before dispersing at the Clubhouse Waterway.

This year spectators will not have access to parking at Waterfront Park due to a city construction project to enhance water-based activities.

Parking is available near European Village for viewing along St. Joe’s Walkway, Canopy Walk, and at Waterfront Park.

Promotional assistance for the parade has been provided by the Florida Inland Navigational District, Flagler Broadcasting, and the Palm Coast Observer.
