New Publix on the beachside to open soon

The city of Ormond Beach will debut new flags for First Responder Appreciation Day on Thursday, Oct. 28.

They were hoisted on Wednesday, Oct. 27, on flag poles across the city, in addition to the American flags.

“This dual flag gives us a chance to show our appreciation for the local law enforcement officers as well as our fire rescue squads all at the same time,” said Mayor Bill Partington in a press release.

“Our first responders work hard all year long and we wanted a chance to honor them in a very public way where everyone can take a moment to appreciate all they do for our city.”

roximity to an airport and available land.

Those were two things Command Medical Products CEO David Slick Sr. was looking for in 1987 when he was searching Volusia County for a place to build his new facility. The city of Ormond Beach checked all the boxes.

Command Medical Products was one of the first companies to occupy the Airport Business Park adjacent to the Ormond Beach Municipal Airport. The medical device manufacturing company started in Ormond with seven employees and has since grown to employ about 190 people.

If the airport wasn’t here, neither would be Command Medical Products, said Slick. Housing and flying its 1978 Piper PA-31-350 aircraft out of the airport is critical to the company.

“From a business standpoint, it has added dramatically to our ability to get to customer sites, to get to supplier sites, and resolve any problems or make presentations or plan for future growth, and being able to do it in one day and come back the same day,” Slick said.

In June, the City Commission unanimously approved a $45,000 work authorization to allow consultants to prepare a new supplemental environmental assessment for the proposed 600-foot extension of Runway 9/27, which runs east to west. This is a revision of the project; the original proposal was to extend the runway 1,000 feet to the west, at a cost of $3.7 million.

The reduction in scope also reduces the price by about $900,000, said Airport Manager Steven Lichliter at the Aviation Advisory Board meeting on Monday, Oct. 11. The supplemental environmental assessment is still underway, and some nearby residents who worry about the project’s impact on their quality of life are taking that as a sign there’s still time to halt the project.

CITIZENS AGAINST RUNWAY EXTENSIONS

On Tuesday, Oct. 19, several citizens rallied at the Granada Bridge to protest the runway extension project, with some belonging to grassroots group Citizens Against Runway Extensions.

Mike Rogers, whose property on Pineland Trail abuts the airport, was among them.

“The simple fact is you don’t extend a runway for any other reason other than you need to bring in, or you want to bring in, larger, bigger planes, such as

While debate over the project has ignited in the community in the last year, Rogers has been dealing with the proposed extension for much longer. His was one of the properties affected by the original 1,000-foot extension proposal. He was offered $29,500 by the city in 2020 for a 2.6 acreeasement of his property — which Rogers turned down — and with other property owners following suit, the city was unable to go through with the project. The easements were needed for a longer runway protection zone.

A big issue with the project, Rogers said, is that many people are unaware of what’s going on.

Though legal notices were placed, he said the city hasn’t made attempts to alert nearby property owners of the project. The public meetings held for the 2015 Airport Master Plan Update were attended by fewer than 40 people.

“A lot of them thought this was shot down 17 years ago, never to be done again,” Rogers said. “They’ve already had it vetoed, so to speak, once, when there was a public mandate in 2004 against this. Everybody kind of assumed that it was a done deal. ... They didn’t realize they’d snuck it back through.”

In 2004, the city began considering extending Runway 17/35, which runs north to south, but the project was ultimately voted down in 2005.

IS THE AIRPORT LOSING MONEY?

The airport’s finances have also been a recent discussion topic in the community.

The city’s budget for the 20212022 fiscal year detailed that the airport fund had an estimated beginning fund deficit of $621,309. The city expects to bring in over $2.5 million in revenue for the fund this year, but expenditures are still expected to exceed that by over $63,000, leaving an estimated $685,000

NOISE COMPLAINTS Norm Echelberry, a resident of unincorporated Volusia County, sees planes fly over his house on a daily basis.

He’s been keeping track of flight patterns and noise complaints since about 2010.

“It’s still very loud at times, especially on weekends,” Echelberry said. “In September, in one two-week period, I personally heard over 60 aircraft over my house, or very close to it, and in another two week period in September, over 40.”

The majority of the airport noise he experiences from his home is due to training aircraft, an issue he hopes doesn’t get lost in the debate over the runway extension. As he reads more about the project on social media, he said his concerns continue to grow. He can’t see how the project would benefit the community as a whole.

In a city memo from Economic Development Director Brian Rademacher to the City Commission dated June 11, Rademacher writes that the extending the runway to the west will allow planes to take off from a point father from the communities, “thus reducing the perceived impacts of noise in the residential areas east of the airport. It is commonly accepted that the primary noise complaints come from the repetitive traffic patterns most often associated with extensive Florida flight training and less often from the arrival and departure of itinerant business aircraft.”

“They say that, but there’s nothing to guarantee it because the flight schools can still land in the same place they’re landing now, instead of closer to I-95 and there’s nothing to prevent them from taking off the exact same way they’re doing now,” Echelberry said.

City Finance Director Kelly McGuire said this is standard for most municipal airports.

“Airports aren’t typically there to make dollars,” she said. “They’re there to provide a service to the community and like most of the services we offer, we’re not here to make a profit.

We’re here to just break even.”

The airport’s day-to-day operations are funded through the rent of its hangars and the golf course property, which has been shuttered since 2020. The city is working to examine possible future uses for the property and, on Oct. 5, commissioned a $57,000 land use study for this purpose.

The deficit in the airport fund reflects the amount of dollars that have been borrowed from the general fund, primarily for the purpose of covering the city’s share for Federal Aviation Administration or Florida Department of Transportation grant applications. Those dollars are then used for capital projects. In terms of airport operations, the fund is self-sufficient, McGuire said.

From 2016 to 2020, the city received $7.34 million in grants, the majority of which came from the FAA. with a match by the city of 2.5%.

“Recognize though that we may expend a dollar to get $100,000 from FAA or FDOT so it’s a good leveraging of dollars, and eventually the Airport Fund will have to pay that back to the general fund,” McGuire said.

ECONOMIC IMPACT

The city’s job is to operate and maintain the airport, said Lichliter in a recent interview with the Ormond Beach Observer.

“They lease the land to private enterprise, and then they use that land to provide aeronautical services and other business services out of the airport,” he said.

FDOT reports that the Ormond Beach airport employs 518 people, with a total payroll of $17.83 million. The direct economic impact of the airport is over $18 million, and indirect impacts total $11.9 million.

About 170 aircraft are based at the airport. Traffic in 2020 totaled 110,241 operations. The average operations served by the airport since the master plan update was conducted in 2015 is 106,208.

Lichliter said that should the runway extension project be completed, the type of aircraft permitted won’t change. There are no businesses waiting to bring in jets larger than those that are already here.

VCS raises minimum wage for substitute teachers The School Board voted 4-1 at its meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 26, to raise the hourly wage to $13.50.

Volusia County Schools has increased the hourly wages for substitute teachers, an effort district officials are hoping will help meet the current classroom needs in a year where virtually all labor sectors, including education, are experiencing a shortage of workers.

The School Board voted 4-1 at its meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 26, to raise the hourly wage to $13.50, and, to add a school-based substitute position at each school, the latter which will be eligible for health and retirement benefits, with an hourly wage of $11.50.

School Board member Carl Persis voted against, as he believed the school-based position’s wages should be higher and without benefits.

“We know that this is an out-

of-the box approach, but we also know that in order to do what is best for our kids and ensure that we have the adults on our campus, we need to think out of the box,” said Mark West, chief human resources officer for Volusia County Schools.

Prior to the increase, the minimum hourly rate for VCS substitute teachers was $9.54.

But there are some who think the district should be focusing on hiring the teachers and paraprofessionals needed to relieve current overworked staff instead.

Volusia United Educators President Elizabeth Albert said that they believe the added temporary school-based substitute position violates a settlement reached in 2012 with a former teachers union. Albert said she had sent the district a cease and desist order.

“If this is the way we want to do it, we’ll do it,” Albert said. “It can be avoided. I hope we can get an agreement because bringing someone in as a benefits-eligible employee that is permanent but temporary makes absolutely no sense.”

Kevin Pendley, the school district’s attorney, said VCS did

review the settlement from that agreement, but that it had to do with class size amendment and instances where a certified teacher was co-teaching in the same classroom as a non-certified teacher.

“It has absolutely nothing to do with substitute teachers, in my opinion, at all,” Pendley said.

School Board member Ruben Colon said the practice of offering temporary employees a choice between a higher wage and a lower wage with benefits was standard in other lines of work, such as in health care.

The wage increase is something that will be sustainable for the district, he said. West detailed that the increase is estimated to cost the district about $800,000 more a year.

“I’m hoping we’ll be able to do similar for others as negotiations go on,” Colon said.

Negotiations with VUE regarding $500 signing bonuses, and finders’ bonuses of an equal amount, for paraprofessionals are ongoing.

“We’re hopeful that we’re going to reach an agreement that’s going to offer our paras a very competitive rate of pay,” West said.

FOR A FRIEND 11:52 a.m. — 1500 block of West Granada Boulevard Petit theft. Police arrested a 52-year-old Daytona Beach man who stole six packages of jewelry polishing cloths, worth $6.98 each, from a local supermarket. He told police he had been instructed to do so by someone else.

While in the store, the man was seen putting the packages into

The reporting officer could see the wrapper to a purple blunt wrap, and after the man stepped away from the vehicle, the officer saw a green leafy substance inside the wrap. The officer asked if it was marijuana, and the man replied, “Yeah, that’s what I was trying to tell you.”

He was issued a written warning for the traffic violation. Police confiscated the wraps and marijuana for destruction.

New subdivision proposed for Airport Road and Tymber Creek Road The Tattersall at Tymber Creek project seeks to construct 143 singlefamily homes.

A new 143-lot subdivision has been proposed for the northwest intersection of North Tymber Creek Road and Airport Road, and the surrounding neighbors are concerned with how additional development may impact the area’s existing traffic and flooding concerns.

A neighborhood meeting was held at the Hampton Inn Daytona/Ormond, located at 155 Interchange Blvd., on Thursday, Oct. 21, where around 30 residents voiced their worries over the proposed Tattersall at Tymber Creek project. The developer, Paytas Homes, plans to build lots of 80 feet by 110 feet, with 22 acres of the 84-acre property designated as conservation areas due to the two wetland systems that run through the property. Thirteen acres of stormwater retention ponds have also been proposed.

The property will have at least a 40-foot natural buffer around its perimeter and two access points: one at Tymber Creek Road and a second at Airport Road.

The developer originally proposed a 146-lot development, but has since reduced the project by three lots. According to the city’s land use comprehensive plan, the property is designated for low-density residential with

a maximum of 3.47 units per acre.

Tattersall is proposing a density of 2.16 units per acre, about 35% below the maximum, said attorney Matt Watts, of Cobb Cole, at the neighborhood meeting.

“What we’ve tried to do as a starting point is go back and look at the things that were discussed in those prior applications and incorporate some of the answers that may have been lacking before in the proposal we’ve put together,” Watts said.

In 2018, the Ormond Beach City Commissioned denied a project on the same parcel. That project, known as Marshside Village, was planned to be a 144-lot subdivision. It earned a 3-2 rec-

ommendation by the city’s Planning Board due to citizen traffic concerns, seven isolated lots in the development’s fourth phase, and a developer “agreement” with activism group CANDO 2 during a highly politicized election season.

The denial ended up in court, but on June 9, 2020, A Volusia County Circuit judge ruled to uphold the commissioners’ vote.

That wasn’t the first time a development proposal was denied for the 84-acre property; In 2013, the commission denied a proposal due to small lot sizes.

With the property’s proximity to Pathways Elementary, neighbors — particularly those living

off North Tymber Creek Road — still fear that the subdivision will increase the traffic in peak times.

“You can’t get out at all,” said one resident. “That’s today. Now, when you add 143 homes, you’re going to compound that problem.”

Flooding was also discussed, but the project’s environmental team assured residents that the stormwater ponds would retain the water that usually floods onto Airport road by providing 50% more stormwater storage than the site currently has by nature.

The Tattersall project is tentatively scheduled to be heard by the Planning Board on Dec. 9.

LET TERS Daily COVID cases have dropped Dear Editor: Every day it’s the same thing.

Wear masks, masks work. This is usually followed by citing some sort of study. Well, we’ve been in this thing for long enough to have real-world results and data to see if these “studies” have proven correct.

At the end of August, the experts predicted if we didn’t have strict mask mandates at schools, stadiums, etc., we would see a massive outbreak.

After a month and a half of mask-optional schools, stadiums packed with unmasked students high-fiving each other, and less mask requirements on businesses, the daily case rate in the U.S. is down 55%.

We were told Florida was an anti-science epicenter of a coming COVID apocalypse due to our governor’s reckless decision to let adults make their own decisions regarding masks.

During that same time period, the daily case rate dropped 85%, and Florida now has one of the lowest rate per population of any state in the country.

Please do as you choose — get vaccinated, wear a mask, stay at home, etc. But, the continuous insistence that you’re doing this based on “science” and those who don’t are being irresponsible just does not stand up to the data.

Is Ormond Beach ‘thriving?’

Dear Editor: I don’t know where the mayor lives. In his recent 2021 “State of the City” address, our mayor spun a “tale of two cities” asserting that Ormond Beach is “thriving.” Does he live in the city I know?

Held in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce, the annual luncheon marked another year of misleading self-congratulations. The City Commission video touted a year of accomplishments and new businesses in a “thriving” economy. No mention was made of hundreds of empty storefronts and vacant lots on our main arterial road-

ways.

At this Oct. 12 luncheon, one of the “Awards for Civic Engagement” went to S.R. Perrott, a beer distributorship that received $180,000 in economic incentives from the city to assist its relocation to north U.S. 1.

On the beachside, the city gave $114,000 in grants and incentives to Lucky’s Supermarket, an enterprise that closed its doors after only 10 months.

A “thriving” city does not witness the closing of its two public golf courses and, the loss of its beachside hospital, now gone four years, with no plan for an emergency room replacement.

Daytona Beach Shores opened its new emergency room on July 1, in partnership with Halifax Hospital. Ormond Beach cannot be “thriving” when we see ambulances rushing east over the Granada Bridge.

Our “thriving” city just raised our property taxes by 4.7%, and raised water and sewer rates 1.8%. Our road surfaces on North A1A and Nova Road are washboards; City side streets are cracked and crumbling; and Granada Boulevard traffic is frequently gridlocked. Instead

of addressing these critical infrastructure issues, our city will now spend $2 million to add decorative pavers to downtown sidewalks that rarely see pedestrians.

Our city “leadership” continues to push, for the benefit and “convenience” of the very few elite, plans for runway extensions for its “never thriving” municipal airport. The Ormond Airport is now carrying a $621,000 debt for funds “borrowed” from the city taxpayer general fund. Extension of airport runways to accommodate larger corporate jets will exacerbate noise issues, air quality, safety and environmental issues that erode the quality of life for residents of the 36 subdivisions in Ormond Beach under its flight overlay.

Lastly, in the context of our lost historical buildings such as our church on North Beach Street, sacrificed for a parking garage, and loss of our environmental greenspace sold for money, Ormond Beach can no longer be considered “thriving.”

One Daytona announced on Wednesday, Oct. 20, the grand opening of Stoked Poké, a new restaurant that will offer poké bowls, acai bowls and other fresh eats.

The lifestyle and entertainment destination located across from Daytona International Speedway also announced they’re welcoming a new restaurant and a retail store. The new businesses are expected to open between the end of the year and the first quarter of 2022.

The announcement of these new additions comes only months after the reveal of multiple restaurants, a boutique, a photography studio, the expansion of a medical spa, and a new 122-unit luxury apartment complex at Icon One Daytona.

“We continue to grow, our tenant numbers are stronger than ever, and we couldn’t be happier,” said Roxanne Ribakoff, president of One Daytona. “We believe our centralized location has played a big role in the success of our latest additions. One Daytona is committed to advancing the community, that’s why we place a big emphasis on small business owners.”

Stoked Poké will open on Thursday, Oct. 28. Located across from CMX Luxury Theatre and GameTime, Suite D-440, the food truck gone brick-and-mortar will offer indoor and outdoor seating to customers looking for fresh, healthy eats. Stoked Poké will offer a mirrored menu from their Port Orange location and will be adding more unique fresh plates in the coming months.

Foodies can stop by to try their dishes from Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“I’m super pumped to be opening at One Daytona, we have been working hard for the past few months to get everything ready and it’s finally happening,” said Eric Jackson, owner of Stoked Poké. “We can’t wait to have people come out to our new location and try our food. We are super Stoked to share this exciting new adventure with the community.”

BurgerTen is another new restaurant that will be opening soon at One Daytona. The ghost kitchen concept that started out at Dahlia Mexican Kitchen during the COVID-19 pandemic is going brick-and-mortar after only a year, a goal they were able to accomplish due to the success experienced at their Shoppes at One Daytona location.

Located at the north end of Daytona Boulevard, Suite D-400, they’re expected to open at the end of 2021.

There are three jets stationed at the Ormond airport. However, because of the runway’s length, they cannot take off with a full tank of fuel and maximum occupancy.

Rademacher’s June 11 memo states that the extension “will actually help reduce operational limitations from the business class aircraft that currently use the airport and improve overall safety.”

The memo also states that the initial environmental assessment for the runway extension project estimates a maximum of 622 small jet operations annually, or about 1.7 operations a day. (An operation, the memo details, is a takeoff or landing.)

THE EXTENSION TO THE EAST

Rogers feels like the memo to the commission is misleading.

“I’m not even convinced that those jets will come in, but my point is, that’s what they have in their reports,” he said.

If the runway was unsafe as is, the FAA would have shut the airport down a long time ago, he added. The city is focusing on the

600-foot extension to the west for the time being because staff is aware that adding in the 400-foot extension to the east, as detailed in the 2015 master plan update, would stop the project.

In an email between city consultant Hoyle Tanner and Associates and the FAA, the consultant is advised that the city could not proceed with its supplemental environmental assessment if the 400-foot extension to the east was planned to occur within the next five years. If that was the case, the assessment would need to be stopped, and a new one would have to be done to include both the 600-foot extension to the west and the 400-foot extension to the east.

The FAA’s email was in response to Hoyle Tanner and Associates stating it was the city’s intent to eventually extend the runway 400 feet to the east.

Lichliter said an extension to the east is not under consideration at this time. Should the city proceed in that direction, the extension would be included in the next airport master plan update in 2025.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

Command Medical Product’s eight-seater plane can’t fly to its customers in the Northeast, but the company does use it to fly around the state. Should the run-

way be extended by 600 feet to the west, as the city is planning, Command Medical Products might acquire a jet in the future.

“They are not noisy airplanes,” Slick said. “In fact, the corporate airplanes leave first thing in the morning, one takeoff, and they’re back late in the afternoon, and land.”

Even if more corporate airplanes come to the airport after the extension, which Slick said is the hope, traffic would not increase to the numbers some people are saying it will. If the number of jets tripled, that would mean the airport would house nine jets. The existing jets run between once a month and up to twice a week.

There are three companies located in Ormond Beach specifically for the airport, he added. All employ over 100 people. Command Medical Products alone has an annual payroll of $7 million.

“In the next five years, if you got one more Command Medical Products because of the proximity to the airport, it would be worth all of the things that we’re talking about right now,” Slick said.

Since the city started looking into extending the runway, the trees that buffered Rogers’ property from the airport have been clearcut, he said. Traffic remains as it has always been, but now he can hear some planes when he’s outside.

But it’s not the present traffic that concerns him.

“Right now, I don’t have much of a noise issue or problem, and I never really have, but of course, that will all change when you come closer with a runway toward my property, plus you’re bringing in all the additional jet aircraft,” Rogers said.

Mainland pushes Pine Ridge to limit in volleyball district championship The Bucs upset Seabreeze in the semifinals to advance to the district title game for the first time in 14 years.

ainland High School is known for its football and basketball programs, both of which have provided the trophy case with state championship hardware.

The volleyball team has never even won a district championship. But it came so close on Thursday, Oct. 21.

Down two sets to Pine Ridge in the District 4-5A championship game at Seabreeze High School, the Bucs won the next two sets before losing 15-13 in the fifth and final frame.

“These kids played with a lot of heart and hustle,” coach Lauren Valle said.

Mainland beat No. 1 seed Seabreeze in four games in the semifinals Wednesday, Oct. 20, to advance to the district championship for the first time since 2007.

“We’re definitely trying to change the culture, not just being a school for football and basketball,” Valle said. “We’re not a team that relies on true volleyball players. We have tremendous athletes.

We rely a lot on our basketball girls and our track girls.”

two district seeds, Seabreeze and Pine Ridge, close during the regular season.

“We definitely made big progress this year,” said senior Alexa Wilson, who led Mainland with 22 kills against the Panthers in the marathon match.

But despite taking the runnerup spot in the district, Mainland did not advance to the state playoffs. The four district champs and the next four highest-ranked teams in the region move on.

Seabreeze (19-7) took the final at-large spot and was scheduled to play Panama City Mosley in a regional quarterfinal match on Oct. 27.

“I’m proud of how we grew this season after starting 0-4,” Seabreeze coach Sara Swayze said of her squad, which has just one senior starter in outside hitter Chloe Womack.

The Bucs would have needed to win the district title to advance.

After losing the first two sets by two-point margins, they rallied to win the next two, 25-20 and 25-22, to force a fifth set.

“It’s always been our mindset that we can’t give up when we’re down,” Wilson said. “We just decided to fight as hard as we could until it was over.”

BOWLING into the BEYOND Seabreeze’s Spencer Mosher celebrates his 18th birthday with a bowling scholarship BRENT WORONOFF STAFF WRITER

S

pencer Mosher moved to Ormond Beach three years ago, hoping it would help him secure a college bowling scholarship.

It was a good plan. On Oct. 18, three days after his 18th birthday, the Seabreeze High School senior signed a letter of intent to bowl for Concordia University Ann Arbor (Michigan). Mosher will receive an athletic and an academic scholarship to attend the school, where he intends to major in radiology technology and prephysician assistant studies.

“I reached out to them my junior year,” he said. “The academics are unbelievable, and they have a young, talented bowling program.”

Mosher said he already feels like he’s a member of the Cardinals’ team, which will graduate just one senior in 2022.

“Not a day goes by that someone on the team doesn’t text me,” he said. “It’s nice to go on an official visit and meet the guys on the team, and know they’ll still be there when I start school.”

Sandcrabs advance to state for the second straight year. He’s been among the top three bowlers in Volusia County all three years he’s been at Seabreeze.

He said he moved from Ocala before his sophomore year to improve his chances of getting a bowling scholarship. His previous school, St. John Lutheran, did not have a bowling team, and he knew several of the Seabreeze bowlers from tournament play.

“I bowled against them all the time, so I knew Seabreeze had a really good bowling program,” Mosher said. “And I knew they had the AICE program, which sets you up for college.”

His father, Craig, retired from the Marion County Fire Department, and his mother, Melody, retired as an ER nurse, and the they moved to Ormond Beach.

A left-hander, Mosher, has been one of the top bowlers in the county for the past three years.

“He was a good bowler when he came here, but he’s really honed his skills over the last three years,” said Seabreeze bowling coach Paul Shuler. “He’s team player, he’s a hard worker and he’s a team captain.”

Shuler said in his 10 years as the Sandcrabs’ coach, Mosher is the first Seabreeze bowler to receive a college bowling scholarship.

Mosher has advanced to the Junior Gold Championship in each of the past four years.

“I won my first-ever tournament, and that showed me I had a chance to got to a higher level,” he said.

waves First in the EDP League and fifth in the state, the Ormond Beach Soccer Club’s girls’ U18 team attribute their success to practice, confidence and great teamwork.

Ormond Beach Soccer Club’s U18 girls’ team proved they were undaunted playing in the EDP Florida League U19 age bracket by coming home champions with five wins and one tie. The Waves finished first after playing Florida Prime in their final game and winning 5-0 at the Rivertown Fields in St. Johns County, Saturday, Oct. 16.

Their players range in age from 15 to 17. Facing players who will be turning 19 next year did not seem to faze goalie Avery Dellinger, who had a clean slate all season.

Three goals were scored on the team the entire season after Dellinger was hit in the eye and required stitches.

“My keeper keeps us all together,” team captain Patricia Perez said. “Even though a lot of us get negative in the middle of the game, she does a glove clap and everyone knows to pick it up.”

dro Perez and has been playing since 3 years old. Being yelled at in Spanish by her mother and English by her father from the sidelines has been standard procedure during her 13 years of playing.

“I think he pushes me to the point where I don’t want to have him as a coach because he knows when I get in that head space, I’ll play better,” she said. “I think it’s made me a better player, but don’t tell him that.”

Coach Perez was born in Uruguay and played professional soccer for the Uruguay National Football Team from 1991 to 1998, Penarol Club from 1994 to 1998 and Club Atlético Progreso from 1998 to 2000. He followed his passion for soccer when he moved to the United States where he tried out for the Jacksonville Lyons and played for the team until he retired in 2018. The Ormond Beach Soccer Club gave him his first chance at coaching in the USA in 2006. He has been coaching the Waves since 2013

Mainland wins critical game; Seabreeze clinches district title

and will continue as he coaches the Seabreeze High School girls’ soccer team in the upcoming season.

“It takes time,” he said. “It’s a long process. When I decide to coach, I know that whatever team I’m coaching, I’m going to be coaching a long time. You can’t win every game and you can’t have a great team in a year.”

On Sept. 25, the team traveled to Auburndale to participate in a State Cup Tournament prior to wrapping up their season. Team Boca Blast, ranked first in the state, shut out the Waves, but the referees and coaches picked Dellinger as the Player of the

Game. The next day, they faced off against the No. 2 ranked team — the Indialantic Force —in 92 degree heat, with injured players and a changed formation.

Dellinger had five saves and the game went scoreless for a tie. The Waves are currently ranked fifth in Florida.

“Playing the No. 1 and 2 ranked teams gave us a lot of experience to take into the next season,” Perez said. “Ninety-five percent of the players are Seabreeze players, so this year will be completely different. Before it was like, ‘We play Seabreeze, no big deal.’ Now it will be, ‘We want to beat Seabreeze.’”

Bucs topple New Smyrna Beach, and the Sandcrabs finally get a playoff spot.

While Mainland got the win it needed, Seabreeze clinched a playoff spot for the first time since 2007.

Eddie Whipple rushed for over 150 yards with two touchdowns as the Bucs defeated New Smyrna Beach 40-21 on Oct. 22.

Mainland (4-4 overall, 2-1 in District 6-6A) was ranked seventh in the region in RPI before its critical district victory at New Smyrna and needs to remain among the top eight to make the playoffs for the 28th straight year.

The Bucs have two regular-season games remaining including their final home game, Thursday, Oct. 28, against Groveland South Lake. Mainland’s strength of schedule should be an advantage in the final RPI rankings, even if it loses on Nov. 5 at Jacksonville Bolles.

Seabreeze, meanwhile, is guaranteed a home playoff game on Nov. 12 after clinching the District 7-5A championship. In his third season with the Sandcrabs, coach Pat Brown has turned around a program that went 1-10 in 2018.

Blake Boda passed for 220 yards and four touchdowns in just one half of action as the Sandcrabs (5-4, 3-0) thrashed Pine Ridge 54-0 on Oct. 22. Dimitri Campbell had two touchdown catches.

Seabreeze hosts Atlantic on Oct. 29 in its final regular-season game and then has a week off to prepare for the playoffs.

ith several locally owned restaurants located in Ormond Beach’s downtown district, residents and visitors alike may have trouble picking just one dining destination. But, two local women have come up with a solution: A food tour.

Fun Coast Food Tours held its first official tour in Ormond Beach on Friday, Oct. 21. The company is the brainchild of Ormond Beach residents Linda Webster-Dubea and Michelle Lamb. Lamb recently moved to Plantation Bay from Brevard, North Carolina, and as she was making a list of fun things to do in her new town, her friend Webster-Dubea noticed a food tour was missing.

“Her family, every time they vacation, that’s what they do,” Lamb said. “They search for food tours to go on to learn about the town and taste different foods from the restaurants.”

Thus, their business was born.

The pair began planning and researching food tours in March, and with their shared experience of working in the Cocoa Beach Chamber of Commerce 15 years ago, they have been

able to get six local eateries to participate: Rose Villa, 31 Supper Club, Ormond Garage, The Grind Gastropub and Kona Tiki Bar, Frappes Italian Grille and Gold Leaf Coffee Co. Each walking tour will take participants to four restaurants.

As their business grows, Lamb said they hope to add more restaurants to their list of stops.

Lamb, who previously worked as a contracted meeting planner for NASA and the European Space Agency, said food tours are a fun way to experience a variety of restaurants while getting to know the community. As a new resident, she said she’s looking forward to getting more involved and making friends, especially as she’ll be the one conducting each tour.

“It’s so much easier to talk and get to know people when you’re enjoying good food,” she said.

At each tour stop, the restaurant will get to showcase a dish for the participants to sample, in the hopes of enticing them to dine at their establishment at a later date.

BIZ BUZZ RETURN TO WORK REMAINS SLUGGISH While slightly above the national mark, Florida’s unemployment rate inched down to 4.9% in September as workers appear to have become more selective about jobs.

The state Department of Economic Opportunity on Friday, Oct. 23, estimated the state’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate was down from 5% in August. The rate was down 2.3 percentage points from September 2020, when the state was completing its reopening after COVID-19 pandemic closings that began in March 2020.

The new rate, which measured employment in mid-September, represented 517,000 Floridians out of work from a labor force of 10.59 million. The number of unemployed people was down 13,000 while the size of the labor force had grown by 50,000.

While the state has ramped up efforts since May to push people back into the labor force, it has also seen the number of people leaving jobs, over issues including pay and benefits, jump from 193,000 in September 2020 to 264,000 in the latest report.

Adrienne Johnston, the department’s chief economist, said people leaving jobs for other opportunities is a sign they are confident they can find better work.

“While we are seeing an increase in people quitting since last year, what is really interesting about that is that they are quitting but they are still saying they are looking for work,” Johnston said. “Traditionally, this is considered to be an optimistic sign.” not seasonally adjusted, unlike the statewide rate.

Housing market: rising median prices, all-cash sales In September, single-family existing home sales paid in all cash increased by 38.5% year-over-year.

Florida’s housing market reported higher median prices, a rise in all-cash sales and constrained inventory levels in September compared to a year ago, according to Florida Realtors latest housing data.

“The September data shows that while median prices are well above their year-ago levels for both single-family and condotownhouse properties, the rate of price growth month-to-month has slowed down quite a bit over the past few months,” said 2021 Florida Realtors President Cheryl Lambert, broker-owner with Only Way Realty Citrus in Inverness. “Of course, demand and a lack of inventory continue to put rising pressure on home prices. If mortgage rates start to increase more in the coming months, as many analysts predict, that could ease the intense demand we’ve been seeing.”

The statewide median sales price for single-family existing homes in September was $355,000, up 18.3% from the previous year, according to data from Florida Realtors Research Department in partnership with local Realtor boards/associations.

Last month’s statewide median price for condo-townhouse units was $255,000, up 17.2% over Sep-

tember 2020. The median is the midpoint; half the homes sold for more, half for less.

Closed sales of single-family homes statewide last month totaled 28,302, down 1.3% yearover-year, while existing condotownhouse sales totaled 11,845, up 4.9% over September 2020.

Closed sales may occur from 30to 90-plus days after sales contracts are written.

In a continuing trend, the share of closed sales that were all-cash purchases rose last month compared to the previous year. In September, single-family existing home sales paid in all cash increased by 38.5% year-overyear, while all-cash sales of condo-townhouse units rose by 22.9%.

On the supply side of the market, new listings and inventory remained restricted last month, said Florida Realtors Chief Economist Brad O’Connor.

“New listings of single-family homes only increased by 2.2% year-over-year in September, the lowest increase since February 2021,” he said. “New listings of condos and townhomes, meanwhile, declined on a yearover-year basis for the first time since January, down by 7.3%. This slowdown in new listings relative to the pace of sales has resulted in our levels of inventory stalling out.”
