A new riding stable coming to Ormond?

A historic building in the downtown district is in the middle of an exterior improvement, as the Highlander Corp. is installing decorative clay tile at 15-23 W. Granada Blvd.

Known as the Buschman Building, it is home to Frame of Mind and Goldleaf Coffee.

Highlander Corp obtained a $50,000 building improvement grant from the city’s community redevelopment agency, which is constituted by the commission.

Buschman Building

King’s View Farm LLC seeks a special exception to operate a riding stable in Ormond Beach.

The Ormond Beach Planning Board will review five items at its Dec. 10 meeting, including a land use amendment for a rural property west of I-95 and a special exception for a new riding stable.

Regarding the latter, the property in question is located at 2415 Durrance Lane and owned by Jordan Huntley of King’s View Farm LLC. The special exception seeks to allow the boarding of five or more horses as well as permission to teach

horseback riding lessons.

The facility plans to provide full boarding, training and care services for up to 20 horses.

As for the land use amendment, and zoning map amendment, for the property at 2341 W. Granada Blvd. is slightly unusual because it applies to only a portion of the property, as 0.32 acres is under city jurisdiction and the remainder is located in unincorporated Volusia County. According to the accompanying agenda

documents, the subject area was never given a land use or zoning designation. The western part of the property was developed in 1996 for a telecommunications facility.

Also on the agenda are a land development code amendment for the North U.S. 1 interlocal planning and municipal service area and the annual update of the city’s Capital Improvements schedule of the comprehensive plan.

Civil Discourse, a group aiming to find solutions to local problems through community conversations, is active once again.

The group held its first Zoom meeting on Dec. 7, where panelists including local engineer Parker Mynchenberg and permaculture designer Jenny Nazak spoke on looming traffic issues. Finding that more education is needed on the planning process for developments, Civil Discourse plans to tackle the topic at its next meeting on Monday, Dec. 14. Contact billdenny105@ gmail.com

The Ormond Beach Police Department received $100,000 from the Ormond Beach Police Foundation, a result of a gift donation by a local anonymous citizen, and the foundation is hoping to raise enough dollars in the community to match the donation.

The foundation was originally founded in 2012 by four former Ormond Beach mayors: the late circuit judge Dave Hood, Volusia County Council Chair Ed Kelley, Volusia County School Board Member Carl Persis and former state representative Fred Costello. It was then called the Ormond Beach Community Foundation, and at the urging of the late construction firm head Chuck Strasser, it aimed to address a wide variety of local needs such as providing community internet access to help students, finding paying summer jobs for interns and aiding the Halifax Habitat for Humanity effort, said Kelley at a press conference at the police station on Monday, Dec. 7.

The foundation was renamed to the Ormond Beach Police Foundation a few months ago to focus on supporting law enforcement. Kelley, Persis and Costello still serve on the board of directors, where City Commissioner Dwight Selby serves as president.

“As a community, if we value public safety, we’ve got to step up,” Selby said. “We’ve got to do this. We’ve got to figure out how to properly fund and support law enforcement so that they know that they’re valued, because what they do is extremely important to us.”

WHAT THE MONEY WILL BE USED FOR

Selby said he is hopeful the community’s match goal will

be reached quickly to help fund several of the department’s wish list items for 2021, including night sights for all officer weapons, ballistic shields, and more education and training for their officers.

Police Chief Jesse Godfrey said the department is already planning to send Lt. Thomas Elkin to the Southern Police Institute for a command officers development course, as well as bring in a deescalation trainer for their officers. The department is excited, Godfrey said, as the amount of funds was “historic” in what has been a year marked by an ongoing pandemic, national social unrest and weekly protests at the Granada bridge.

“It’s been a very challenging year for us and this is probably the brightest spot in the year,” Godfrey said.

THE LEGACY OF HOOD AND STRASSER

Kelley said he’s glad the nonprofit has morphed into what it is today. Taxes can only fund so much, Kelley said, and this effort goes along Hood’s philosophy of “leaving the community better than you found it.”

“There’s nothing that we could do that could positively impact our entire community than what we’re doing today.” Kelley said.

There’s always a need in the police department and these funds will go a long way to meet those needs, Persis said. His only wish was that Hood and Strasser could both be present to see their efforts come to fruition. Hood died in March 2019, and Strasser in January 2015.

“When we started, we never knew where this was going to go, but we knew we wanted to do something good, right?” Persis said. “And we wanted to help, and now we’re going to get there.”

Volusia County Schools is preparing to continue remote learning modalities for the spring semester, with plans needing to be submitted to the Florida Department of Education by Dec. 15.

Families with Volusia Live students will be contacted the first week of January to determine whether they will stick with the virtual option, or whether they will return to brick-and-mortar.

Total enrollment in Volusia Live has decreased by about 42% since August, district data shows, as numbers fell from 15,087 to 8,673 as of Dec. 1.

Volusia County Schools Superintendent Carmen Balgobin, who updated the School Board on the enrollment numbers at its meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 8, said the district will continue to issue progress reports regarding the performance of these students.

A new part of the education plan that will be submitted to DOE includes an intervention plan for failing students. Parents of these students who do not wish to return to brick-and-mortar will have to sign a written acknowledgment detailing they want to keep their child in Volusia Live despite their lack of academic progress.

Patty Corr, assistant superintendent for middle schools, said Volusia Live does work for some, but for others, there is worry regarding their academics.

“That’s concerning, not just because we have accountability at the end of the year,” Corr said.

“It’s concerning because of the ripple effect of the learning loss that we are expecting to see as a result of our students not being face to face.”

Back in October, the district shared that almost two-thirds of secondary school students and one third of elementary school students enrolled in Volusia Live had a D or an F in at least one class. That number has since decreased in both elementary and high school as many students returned to brick-and-mortar.

However, in middle school, the percentage has increased.

Another concern come spring semester involves students enrolled in Volusia Online.

Though 85% of students currently enrolled in that modality plan to remain through the next semester, 15% are returning to brick-and-mortar. Volusia Online follows a different curriculum map, and transitioning students are often behind their brick-and-mortar classmates in some lessons, and ahead in others.

School Board member Jamie Haynes said that, apart from the 15% already planning to return, once the second semester starts the district should make sure the remaining students don’t transition. It can be disruptive to the classes, Haynes said.

“We as teachers have always been used to, ‘You get a kid. You lose a kid,’” Haynes said. “OK, but it’s been like a revolving door this year.”

A TEAM EFFORT

When City Manager Joyce Shahanan told the City Commission at its Dec. 1 meeting of Mihalko’s award, she indicated he would be humble about it.

“He will tell you that it’s a whole department effort, but we really appreciate all of his work on that,” Shanahan said.

She was right. Mihalko stresses that it’s due to the entire team that they’re able to close cases.

The strength of law enforcement lies in being able to work together.

“You cannot be the lone wolf, the one-man army,” Mihalko said. “You are a part of the team, and if you don’t have that, you will never do successful cases like this. You can’t.”

Every Batman needs his Robin.

Mihalko said you need a good team to make a good case, and afterward, keep those good cases closed. Everyone on the team has strengths and they bear the grim aspects of their job together.

On his upper right arm, Mihalko sports a tattoo of the Joker’s face bisected by the Bat Signal.

“Greatest hero and the greatest villain going at it,” he said.

If Ormond Beach Police Detective Ryan Mihalko isn’t at the station, he doesn’t have to worry about missing a case. The files will be waiting for him on his chair.

Mihalko, who has been in law enforcement for 12 years, loves his job. He knew for a long time that he wanted to be a police officer, having always liked the idea of standing up for others. As a detective on the small police force, he has a lot of freedom to do investigations. He travels where the cases demand, and spends hours working on a variety of different kinds of cases, from credit card fraud all the way up to homicides.

Investigations come with a lot of work.

“On the road, at the end of the day, your cases are done,” Mihalko said. “You go home, tomorrow’s a fresh day of calls. Here, the pile always is there.”

He has a couple of arrests warrants taped up on his cubicle, one of which is from the 2019 Ormond Beach child homicide case he investigated. It’s one of the cases that contributed to him winning Volusia County’s Crime Stoppers Officer of the Year.

His cubicle is decorated with superheroes, namely Batman.

Mihalko said he’s a nerd at heart,

Mihalko remembers responding to the June 2019 call for Daemon Scott, a 5-month-old boy who died at the hospital from injuries police believe to have been the result of child abuse by his parents, both of whom were charged and arrested for his death.

He originally thought he was responding to a child neglect case, but when he arrived at the scene, he recalls that something didn’t feel right. He was warned that Scott was very injured, but still, the image is burned in his brain, he said.

“It was by far 100% pure, uncut nightmare fuel,” Mihalko said.

As a father himself, this was the most difficult case he’d ever worked. When you think of working a homicide, Mihalko explained, you think about crimes of passion or perhaps rival criminals. You don’t think of a child meeting that fate.

The second case that earned him the recognition of Officer of the Year was the sexual battery of a young woman at the River Grille in Ormond Beach in February of this year. The suspect turned out to be a registered sex offender, someone Mihalko described as a “serial rapist.” That case necessitated the help from multiple agencies to close.

With cases like this, Mihalko recognizes the need to take care of his mental health. He tries not to bring his stress home with him, but if he does, his wife is his rock.

When he’s not spending time with his daughter, helping solve

her crises when she gets locked out of her iPad, Mihalko decompresses through video games and cooking. His wife bought him a cookbook for their anniversary.

“Just the little things, and it keeps you grounded,” Mihalko said. “It helps push you through, because you can’t dwell on it.”

VICTIMLESS CRIME? 9:41 p.m. — 100 block of North Nova Road DUI. A 52-year-old homeless man was arrested for drunk driving, and while he was being

transported to the station, he told police that “there could be someone getting killed right down the street, but you’re arresting a drunk.”

Police pulled the man over and noticed he was “mildly sluggish, but cooperative and friendly,” according to the police report. The officer could smell the scent of alcohol coming from his breath and when he tried to speak with the man, the man would become distracted and stop looking for documents requested by the officer.

The man completed the field sobriety exercises, and though he failed several, insisted that he had passed and that he had committed a “victimless crime.”

He was taken to jail.

COPS CORNER

DRUNK THREATS 5:18 p.m. — Intersection of I-95 and State Road 40 Grand theft. While under observation at the police department following a vehicular crash caused by her drunk driving, a 35-year-old woman frequently screamed at officers that it was time to go and that her father was going to castrate them.

Police arrested the woman, who had been found asleep behind the wheel after a crash.

She only woke up when speaking with officers, according to the police report. Police started the field sobriety exercises, but because she was having issues standing without assistance, the officer determined it was unsafe to continue with them.

Her husband arrived at the scene and advised that he didn’t recognize the vehicle she was in. He said he had received a call from his wife while she was shopping where she told him that she couldn’t find her car. She sounded drunk, the husband said. She was eventually taken to jail.

Later, police found the car’s owner, who said she dropped her keys while at the shopping center and that when she went back to the car to look for them, her vehicle was no longer there. She said she wished to press charges.

Volusia County cases per day

A DAY’S DETOUR 2:03 p.m. — Intersection of Ocean Shore Boulevard and Rivocean Drive Attempting to elude law enforcement. A police officer was diverting traffic due to a call about a nearby drowning when a vehicle almost hit his patrol car. The car then appeared to try to drive around the officer’s car, and the officer attempted to stop him by smacking the front passenger windshield area.

The driver then fled the area, ignoring other officers’ request to stop, according to his arrest report. The officer later tracked him down and detained him.

The officer asked the driver, a 63-year-old Ormond Beach man, why he didn’t stop when he was advised to do so, and the driver said his foot slipped off the brake and that’s why he almost hit the officer. Afterward, he said he was too scared to stop, and claimed he didn’t hear the other officers’ requests.

He was taken to jail.

Save what remains of the Loop Former Ormond Beach mayoral candidate says the Loop has not yet been saved.

species had been done in the previous 10 years. No scientific analysis was done to determine what buffer width would be necessary to protect the huge live oaks. Despite the support of thousands of Ormond residents, “Save the Loop” failed to prevent the Plantation Oaks intersection that ripped out 700 feet of old-growth tree line, becoming a precedent for a subsequent equal-sized Old Dixie Highway intersection for Halifax Plantation South.

History contradicts the mayor’s assertion in his editorial that the Loop is “well-saved within guidelines allowed by law and property rights.”

That’s just political gobbledygook. Property rights do not include the automatic right to any rezoning that adversely impact adjacent properties, in this case the scenic public road that is the Loop. Community volunteers attempted to “Save the Loop” with no help from Mr. Partington or the Ormond Beach city government. He now, once again, abdicates city leadership when he says the county should take the lead on Loop issues by using Volusia Forever funds for the costly purchase of undeveloped, still forested Plantation Oaks lots.

The city’s recent Plantation Oaks annexation failed to negotiate environmental protections, tree preservations, or lot reductions as a condition for approval. Why was there no public referendum on such a large-scale annexation?

The planned 1,576 manufactured homes get city water, sewer, police, and fire services while paying no property taxes. The development gets the valuable “Ormond Beach” brand. What did the city get in return besides water and sewer revenue? The Plantation Oaks property adjacent to the Loop clear-cut thousands of trees, requiring tons of fill and a dozen mega-sized retention ponds, high impact development that directly contradicts recommendations in Ormond’s Land Development Code and fails to meet our city’s high standards.

The mayor’s claim of

commitment to “our beautiful natural environment” is contradicted by his long record of weakening our wetland and development rules, and by subsequent specimen tree desecrations at Granada Pointe and Sterthaus Drive. Again, and again, approvals of new commercial developments have trampled the rights of adjacent property owners. The Planned Business Development process allows development rules to be bypassed with waivers and exemptions negotiated with city government. Recently, the mayor and the City Commission rejected a request for a Tree Advisory Board that was made by a respected citizen group in our community. Having such a Board is an Arbor Day Foundation requirement for having its “Tree City” designation.

Over the years, our local leaders have squandered one opportunity after another to negotiate for preserving our environment and small city quality of life. Contrary to the mayor’s assertion, the Loop has not been saved. The Ormond Beach environment – its wetlands, waterways, and its tree canopies – remain in serious peril.

I’m asking our mayor and City Commission to work collaboratively with our newlyelected County Council chairman, our re-elected District 4 County Council representative and our state Legislature representative to develop a comprehensive strategy for the Loop.

The 175-foot buffer along Old Dixie highway shouldn’t just be a buffer, but protected as a conservation easement. Our city’s Planning Director and staff have had a listing or inventory of parcels around The Loop that could be subject to future development. That’s a starting point for targeting expenditure of federal, state and local funding to purchase available parcels for environmental preservation into perpetuity.

There’s so much to do. Let’s not squander another opportunity. Together, let’s save what remains of the Loop.

Dear Editor: I was one of the recipients of the Jewish Federation’s Jerry Doliner Food Bank turkey giveaway. I am a single mother of four children. I have always worked, but I lost my job due to the pandemic.

I was overwhelmed by what the food bank gave us.

We received a 5-pound bag of oranges, 5-pound bag of tangerines, 5-pound bag of apples, 5-pound bag of potatoes, three large stalks of celery, pastries, cakes, bread, bagels, grapefruit, peanut butter, cereal, macaroni and cheese and noodles. Also, a bag full of essentials for Thanksgiving — stuffing, corn, green beans, mushroom soup, broth, gravy, rice, fruit cocktail and yams. We got a 19-pound turkey and 2.5 pounds of bacon.

I had to show ID for myself and my four children. We received a list of people who gave funds for this project. I

Plantation, the Harley shop, a Dollar General, a RaceTrac gas station, McDonald’s and a couple of hotels — which, half of those can be torn down.

They are major eyesores and bring in the wrong crowd if anyone chooses to investigate.

But seriously, what about a grocery store and maybe a bank? When you’re on that side of town, you have to go clear across town to pick up groceries or do any banking. Seriously, I can’t figure this town out. And, if you are sitting on a side street off U.S. 1, you’re waiting a good three to four minutes before the lights change, even if there is no one coming down U.S. 1. So frustrating.

Mayor Partington’s Nov. 26 editorial falsely claims the Loop has been saved. In his editorial, I find it regretful that he is dismissive of public input – equating citizens’ valid concerns about the fate of the Loop to misguided concerns in a “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” comedy movie. Over 61,000 people have signed an online petition to save the Loop, and over 11,600 Ormond Beach residents voted in November for a platform to save what remains of the Loop.

As a 17-year city commissioner, the mayor knows the Ormond Beach community’s 2003 “Save the Loop” movement tried to stop the Plantation Oaks intersection at Old Dixie Highway. Previously, Ormond Beach, as “a substantially affected party” had petitioned the county in 1983 (resolution 83-14), in 1986 (letter from Ormond Beach city attorney), and in 1990 (resolution 90-159) to “pursue a method of limiting access” by disallowing intersections and honoring “the city’s strong recommendations that traffic flow (of the National Gardens Trust Project) be directed south to U.S. 1 and away from Old Dixie highway/North Beach Street.”

In November 2002, the County Council approved Plantation Oaks without the detailed traffic studies required by the development order. Density calculations were omitted, and the Development of Regional Impact lacked a full accounting of units to be developed in each phase. No study of protected

Everything is crammed to the west Dear Editor: The traffic is so horrific around Williamson and Granada that you can’t go anywhere. They built all those new apartment complexes before they built the roads so now what? Oh yeah, they are building more apartment complexes. When are they going to do something about the roads? People are blocking intersections through the lights because they don’t want to sit through another red light. Something has to be done about this mess that has been created.

I have proposed a citizen committee to review and prioritize sensitive environmental/recreational lands for a bond referendum for potential purchase by the city in partnership with other land preservation groups. A majority of the commission as well as many residents have heartily agreed. This process will give voice to our residents as we look at possibly spending millions of dollars to purchase private property in Ormond Beach for conservation purposes.

In closing, I encourage anyone who is serious about preserving the loop to join and/or donate to the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail. This devoted group of volunteers have worked hard to protect this 30+ mile loop of road covering some of the most beautiful natural scenery in the State of Florida.”

Clara and the prince The performances of ‘The Nutcrackerin the Round’ took place at the Ocean Center last weekend.

The Volusia Civic Ballet took audiences on a journey full of holiday magic, colorful characters and the classical music of Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky as it presented “The Nutcracker in the Round” at the Ocean Center.

Featuring Ormond Beach residents Joy Perry as Clara and Tanner Noronha-Weeks as the Nutcracker, the show told the story of the traditional ballet in a new format, and graced the stage with three performances on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 5-6. With a cast of over 90 performers from 18 dance studios, including Dayesi Torriente and Arian Molina Soca form the Pennsylvania Ballet, audiences were able to watch the full-length production from all sides of the circular stage.

Seats were sold in pods of two, three and tables of eight to comply with social distancing restrictions. There was also a Children’s Sugar Plum Tea at 6 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday, where children ages 3-12 were able to enjoy sweets as some of the Nutcracker characters made an appearance.

Joy Perry and Tanner NoronhaWeeks have both been participating in the Volusia Civic Ballet’s performance of “The Nutcracker” for several years.

For Perry, landing the lead role of the ballet is something she’s always worked toward. This was her eighth year participating in The N u t c ra c k e r, and it was the 13-year-old’s turn in the spotlight.

“It’s kind of scary, you know, but it’s exciting,” Perry said. “I’m really honored that they picked me.”

She didn’t land the role without hard work. Perry has danced since she was 4 years old. She attends dance practices six days a week. Part of what inspires her is watching and learning from the previous principal dancers, as well as the guest artists.

“When I see them dance, it’s just

like this passion that they have that flows through everybody that loves to dance, and I think that’s what motivates me to do it every week and push my body,” Perry said.

Noronha-Weeks, who played Clara’s love interest — an apprentice of mysterious magician Uncle Drosselmeyer turned Nutcracker in Clara’s dream in the ballet — has performed in the annual Nutcracker performance a total of six times. The Spruce Creek High senior said he goes back every year for the younger dancers. He remembers the older kids doing the same for him at their age.

“Not many boys dance, so it’s cool to fuel their passion while they fuel mine,” said NoronhaWeeks, who is 17.

A LOVE OF DANCE

Both dancers with South Beach Dance, the local teenagers are passionate about their talent.

Perry hopes to dance at ballet conservatory someday. Getting there might mean choosing dance over hanging out with friends sometimes, Perry said, but those are sacrifices one has to make to dance on the stage. She loves to perform.

“If it’s something you really want to do, it’s worth it in the end,” she said.

Noronha-Weeks wrote his college essays on being a male ballet dancer. It’s not easy, he said, but he’s had wonderful teachers help him build confidence along the way. One was the late Barbara Janisaitis, one of his former instructors at South Beach Dance.

Having been put in dance classes at 6 years old by his parents, and hated it, it was Janisaitis who helped him fall in love with the art form.

Now, he dances 20 hours a week while working two jobs and attending school. He’s waiting to hear back from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where if accepted, he hopes to pursue an engineering degree.

Without all the staff and teachers aiding the ballet this year, the show would not be possible, Noronha-Weeks said.

In a year where many holiday events have been canceled, the Volusia Civic Ballet decided the show had to go on.

“It’s also a time where people need something to look forward to, and I feel like the Nutcracker will be that this holiday season,” NoronhaWeeks said.

Aside from ballet Tanner Noronha-Weeks, loves to tap dance. He performed during the Mr. Spruce Creek competition.

iving in New York City for 19 years meant that one of Julia Truilo’s favorite traditions was strolling Fifth Avenue during the holidays and enjoying the many department store window exhibits. That delightful memory along with the fact that she strongly believes in reading to children, planted the seedlings of the Holiday Story Stroll.

The concept evolved after Truilo, executive director of Ormond Beach MainStreet, met with Cultural Center Coordinator Siobhan Daly and librarians Christina Wells and Kathryn Pase. COVID-19 restrictions forced them to question what they could do during the holidays that would e n co u ra ge people to get outdoors but be able to Julia Trullio socially distance. The Holiday Story Stroll was the perfect solution.

After deliberating, they picked the “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” Pase illustrated the storybook pages while Daly and her staff installed reusable display cases around the center grassy area of Rockefeller Gardens.

“It was great to see these three institutions come together to give a gift to the community,” Truilo said. “It reminds us that our ‘small-town vibe,’ our ability to know and work with one another whenever the opportunity arises is one of the things that makes Ormond Beach a special place to live.”

Today, the Holiday Story Stroll is an alternative to some of the activities that have been canceled this year.

Families can sing “The Twelve Days of Christmas” together as they walk the Rockefeller Gardens.

Patronis was in Gainesville on Tuesday, Altamonte Springs and West Palm Beach on Wednesday, and has at least two more appearances next week where he will continue to decry the threat of “trial lawyers” looking to cash in on the crisis.

“We’re already seeing trial balloons go up as litigation is developing, with McDonald’s, with Walmart,

So far, 21 states have enacted some sort of liability shields for businesses against coronavirusrelated lawsuits.

‘BEST ACCOUNTING FIRM FOR WOMEN’ Stetson University alumna Suzanne Shaw Forbes is the managing partner at James Moore Certified Public Accountants and Consultants, and

her firm was recently recognized as the best accounting firm for women in 2020 by Accounting Today, the university said in a press release.

Forbes was encouraged to pursue an accounting degree by a high school mentor because she excelled in math. She later worked part-time for a local certified public accountant while dual enrolled in college courses. By the time she arrived at Stetson in 1984, she was only a few credits short of an associate’s degree, according to the press release.

She graduated with a master’s degree and a CPA license after three years. In 1987, she began working at James Moore Certified Public Accountants and Consultants, and became a firm partner in 1995.

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION Valrie Chambers, an associate professor of accounting at Stetson University, was appointed to the Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Task Force of the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

“I’m passionate about social justice and believe that the accounting profession should evolve with our society,” said Chambers, who was appointed to FICPA’s board of directors in January. “Diversity and inclusion creates a stronger and more trusted profession. I believe there are opportunities to expand diversity and inclusion within the accounting profession in Florida.

LATITUDE MARGARITAVILLE FOUNDATION DONATES $5,000 TO FIRST STEP SHELTER The Latitude Margaritaville Daytona Beach Community Foundation recently awarded First Step Shelter with a $5,000 donation on the National Day of Giving, Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Each year, the foundation reaches out to local nonprofits and organizations, who then complete an application asking for monetary help. The residents of Latitude Margaritaville then decide which ones they want to support, said Latitude Margaritaville resident Michael McLean. This year because of COVID-19, and the need many organizations found themselves in

as a result, all 13 nonprofits that applied received a $5,000 donation.

At each new home closing, buyers donate $100 to the foundation, and Minto Communities matches the donation. With over 3,000 homes planned for Latitude Margaritaville Daytona beach, this will generate funds exceeding $600,000 for the foundation, according to a press release. Aside from First Step Shelter, other recipients included Food Brings Hope, Friends of the Marine Science Center, the Ormond Memorial Art Museum and the Halifax Humane Society.

Seabreeze Sandcrabs fall to Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs

eabreeze Sandcrabs hosted Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs in Tuesday night’s non-conference varsity basketball game. Sandcrab shooting guard Nick Grubel scored 7 points in the first quarter closely following Bulldog D. Neal’s 9 points. After several quick turnovers forced by Flagler Palm Coast, the first quarter deficit increased to 25-13 in the Bulldog’s favor.

Seabreeze scored 10 points in the second quarter, holding Flagler to 16 points but it was not enough. Flagler Palm Coast continued to dominate in free throws and the boards overall, finishing with an 8158 win over Seabreeze.

The ‘Crabs, now 0-4, host Atlantic on Friday.

1908 house in Ormond sells for $1.15 million A

house on two acres on the Halifax River was the top real estate transaction in Ormond Beach and Ormond-by-the-Sea for the week of Nov. 1-7 in the Multiple Listing Service. Nancy Bradley, of Ormond Beach, sold 502 S. Beach St. to Ziche LLC, of Holly Hill, for $1.15 million. Built in 1908, the property includes a 4/3 house with a fireplace and 3,608 square feet along with eight cottages. It sold in 2005 for $1.04.
