Christmas events canceled in the city

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, several annual Christmas celebration events in the city of Ormond Beach have been canceled.

This includes the Home for the Holidays parade, Breakfast with Santa and the Casement’s Guild Christmas Gala. The Casements will still be decorated inside and outside, however, and visitors are invited to tour the house throughout the month of December. The house is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

City Manager Joyce Shanahan informed the commission of these cancellations at the meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 4.

“I know this is really awful,” Shanahan said. “I hate to be the bearer of these types of news.”

Instead of the usual tree lighting ceremony, the city will hold a virtual event where the ceremony will be uploaded on Facebook. As a replacement for the annual parade, Shanahan said the parade committee, city staff and Ormond MainStreet are working to develop a multiple-day “drive-thru”

Volusia County Council Chair Ed Kelley was recently appointed to the governor’s local government efficiency task force.

Kelley, a former Ormond Beach City Commissioner and mayor, has also been involved with the Volusia Water Alliance, Volusia Council of Governments and the River to Sea Transportation Planning Organization, according to a press release.

The Home for the Holidays parade is put together by the parade committee, and they recommended against holding it this year.

“It’s really difficult to stage all of those bands and floats to have the parade,” Shanahan said. “We just can’t do it. Nobody else in the surrounding area is really having parades.”

Kent said he was disappointed the discussion didn’t take place during a commission meeting.

“I would have like to have heard how the other elected officials feel about it,” Kent said. “I know other communities didn’t go with a parade, and I was disappointed in those decisions, but I thought, ‘That’s not my community.’”

Because the Ormond Memorial Art Museum is closed for the upcoming renovation project, its annual Starry Starry Night event has also been canceled.

City to buy new street sweeper The City Commission approved a $281,170 purchase of a street sweeper at its Nov. 4 meeting, replacing a 2015 vehicle that has cost the city 50% of its purchase price in repairs and maintenance.

According to the agenda documents, the 2015 street sweeper is “severely rusted due to the corrosive nature of street sweeping debris.” Its numeorus repairs and maintenance issues have resulted in downtime, and the vehicle is out of warranty.

The funds to purchase the new street sweeper come from the current capital improvement project budget for stormwater maintenance plus the added funds from the auction of the 2015 vehicle.

he city of Ormond Beach hosts a Veterans Day luncheon every year, and despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 was no exception. It just looked a little different.

This year’s Veterans Day celebration by the city’s Leisure Services Department was held in a drive-thru format at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center parking lot on Tuesday, Nov. 10.

City staff members and local elected officials helped to hand out cards and boxed meals the city purchased from Publix. The parking lot was decorated with several and signs thanking veterans for their service.

Retired U.S. Coast Guard Barry duMoulin also took part in the city’s Veterans Day celebration.

Mayor Bill Partington and City Commissioners Rob Littleton and Dwight Selby take part in the celebrations.

Citizens aim to buy land in Plantation Oaks

Local veterans were celebrated.

With protecting the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail on more residents’ minds following the proposed Plantation Oaks amendments, two locals have come up with an idea to expand the 175-foot buffer in one part of the development.

Ormond Beach resident Suzanne Scheiber and Spruce Creek High School student Natalie Pilipczak met with developer Parker Mynchenberg on Oct. 22, and they asked him to place the buffer in a conservation easement. Additionally, Scheiber and Pilipczak asked if he would be willing to sell the land for 76 lots in the northeast portion of phase 1 as conservation, since the land backs up to the buffer and has not yet been cleared.

Mynchenberg was open to the idea and gave Scheiber and Pilipczak 90 days to negotiate for the land, according to the residents.

Mynchenberg was not able to be reached for comment in time for publication.

The residents are hopeful that through a city, county and nonprofit partnership, along with grant assistance, the land could be purchased. A maintenance program would also have to be established.

“It may not happen, but longterm even if it doesn’t happen now, I don’t see us giving up because this was possible when many people said it wasn’t, and I think longterm we agree that there’s still possibility,” Scheiber said.

Scheiber has presented the initiative to both the Ormond Beach City Commission and the Volusia County Council. She asked elected officials to consider adding a conservation easement overlay to the comprehensive plan.

City Planning Director Steven Spraker said in an email that Mynchenberg has yet to submit a new site plan for Plantation Oaks with the conservation easement, but noted that the meeting between Mynchenberg and the residents was recent. A conservation easement would further enforce that the buffer be left in its natural state, he explained.

Pilipczak began a petition titled “Help Save the Ormond Loop” back in June. It’s been signed over 61,000 times. The Loop, a Florida and national scenic byway, is loved by residents all over Volusia County, she said.

“It’s one-of-a-kind,” Pilipczak said. “There’s nothing in this area for miles that’s anything like the Loop.”

Scheiber said she appreciated Mynchenberg’s willingness to work with them.

“This isn’t about stopping [development],” Scheiber said. “It’s about making something work for the community and making the property more valuable in a sense and helping the wildlife.”

W

hen U.S. Army recruiters showed up at the Ormond Beach home of the Postells in 1986, they asked to see George Postell.

Problem was, the recruiters didn’t specify which George Postell they were looking for. His son wasn’t home, so Army veteran George Postell Sr. answered the door. The pair laugh about that memory now, but back then, George Postell Jr. had some explaining to do. He hadn’t told his parents he had enlisted.

“I didn’t want him to go into service nowhere during that time,” Postell Sr. said.

His son nodded. “It was some turbulent times when I went in.”

His parents wanted him to pursue football (he played at Seabreeze High School), but Postell Jr. always knew he would eventually enlist in the military.

If he had to do it all over again, he would.

The father-son duo are two of the featured veterans in this year’s Hometown Heroes banner program by the city. Their faces, along with 103 others, will line the Granada Bridge in November.

Father-son duo are two of 105 Hometown Heroes of the Korean War. At the time, he was working as a bellhop in a beachside resort. He left Ormond Beach and went to Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and later to Fort Bliss, Texas, where he completed basic training.

“It was my first time away from home, and I didn’t know what to think about it,” Postell Sr. said.

Though his time in the military was short — he served 1953-1955 and was stationed in Japan — he does have fond memories of friendship between fellow soldiers. He had been trained as a gunner.

Decades later, when Postell Jr. joined the Army, he spent most of his time deployed in the jungles of Honduras and Panama. He recalls one instance when a sergeant came up to him and asked him to please call his mother when he returned to the U.S. Postell Jr. was a combat engineer attached to a rapid deployment unit, and they were always ready to be deployed anywhere on a moment’s notice.

His mom is very persistent when it comes to her children’s welfare, Postell Jr. said.

“She kept calling the base because we had this thing— I would call my mom every Sunday, and I hadn’t called her,” Postell Jr. recalled.

“She kept calling to find out where I was, and they couldn’t tell her.”

thing he did when he returned to the U.S. was call his mom back in Ormond Beach and let her know he was OK. After his four years in the Army, he re-enlisted for another 20. However, due to an injury sustained while training for his jumpmaster certificate, he was medically discharged shortly after his second tour in Honduras.

CELEBRATING VICTORY

Both Postells, as well as several members of their family, worked for the city of Ormond Beach. Postell Sr. retired from the city’s sanitation department, and Postell Jr. ran the gymnastics program for 24 years. They both participated in the banner program last year. It was an easy decision, seeing as they’re both passionate about celebrating

veterans and their hometown.

Veterans Day is a day to remember the sacrifices made by the men and women of the armed services, Postell Jr. said. It’s about celebrating the belief to stand up for what you believe in.

“I stand behind all the men and women that have served before me and are serving now, and are going to serve,” Postell Jr. said. “It’s a great country. It’s worth fighting for.”

Postell Sr. said he served the country with pride, and appreciates the sacrifice made by the military men and women that enlisted after him during turbulent times. Many volunteered and weren’t drafted, and gave everything for their country and returned wounded, he added.

That needs to be respected more.

“Veterans Day is victory,” Postell Sr. said.

Ormond Beach resident recalls 40 days in Vietnam

If you see a veteran, John Reeves asks that you remember to say, ‘Thank you.’

rmond Beach resident John Reeves arrived at the Da Nang Airport on May 1, 1968.

He remembers how busy it was.

There were helicopters, airplanes and bombers. He was 19 years old and fresh out of the Marine Corps boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina.

“I still remember walking down the steps … and there were all these green bags on the side of the tarmac,” Reeves recalled.

“I’m going, ‘I wonder what that is.’ I finally figured out that they were bodies.”

Reeves’ time in Vietnam was short. He was in combat for 40 days before he returned to the United States.

Having enlisted shortly after graduating from high school in his small town of New Jersey, he knew that if he didn’t go to college, he would likely end up being drafted for the U.S. Army. But, he wanted to be a Marine.

“I’m a big supporter of our country, and I was back then, and so it seemed like the right thing to do at the time,” Reeves said.

His father, a World War II veteran who served in Europe, wasn’t keen on the idea of his son enlisting, but Reeves said his family was supportive of the decision.

to the need for recruits, Reeves became an infantryman for the Marines.

His short time in the service was harsh. Reeves didn’t get to know a lot of people — too many were getting hurt, he said.

“In those 40 days, you didn’t have a whole lot of time to really think about stuff,” Reeves said. “We were always pretty much on the move.”

On June 10, 1968, Reeves was in ambush, and he was shot. The bullet went through one side of his left forearm, exited out the other side and shot through his right

shoulder. The injury eliminated the use of his right arm, and he was transported back to the U.S. for rehabilitation before he was medically retired from the military.

Reeves was awarded with a Purple Heart medal, a recognition he says shows his service is appreciated by his country. A now retired insurance broker, Reeves is a member of local chapters of the Marine Corps League, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign wars and the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

As Veterans Day approaches, Reeves said all veterans have one thing in common: They did what they thought was right.

“It’s just one day,” Reeves said.

“If you meet a veteran, just say thanks.”

Security First donates computers to elementary schools The local insurance company also donated 100 cellphones to the Beacon Center.

Security First Insurance donated over 300 pieces of technology on Monday, Nov. 9, to two local elementary schools in need of technology for virtual student learning.

A total of 117 Chromebooks, 90 Dell desktop computers and 132 monitors were provided to Osceola Elementary and Ormond Beach Elementary, according to a press release. OBE Principal Shannon Hay said that the donation by Security First will give children in families without a computer access to school learning platforms from home, including iReady and Waterford.

“This partnership is evidence that Security First Insurance Company cares deeply about our children and understands the achievement gaps caused by access and opportunity,” said Hay in the press release.

Incoming House Speaker Chris Sprowls on Thursday, Nov. 5, rolled out a leadership team and committee changes, including a new committee — led by Ormond Beach representative Tom Leek (District 25) — that will be directed to look at the state’s response to the coronavirus pandemic and plan for future emergencies.

Palm Coast Republican Paul Renner, who is in line to succeed Sprowls as speaker in November 2022, was named Rules Committee chairman. Spring Hill Republican Blaise Ingoglia will chair the Commerce Committee, and Lakeland Republican Colleen Burton will chair the Health & Human Services Committee.

Sprowls, a Palm Harbor Republican, takes the gavel on Nov. 17. He sent a memo to House members that named a dozen leaders for the next two years and outlined changes such as creation of the Pandemics & Public Emergencies Committee.

“Florida is facing challenges, but I am confident that if we continue to govern with the same conservative principles that have served us well in the past, we will have more than enough to fund education, health care, and our public safety while also protecting the taxpayers and consumers that elected us,” Trumbull said in a prepared statement.

Leek will chair the Pandemics & Public Emergencies Committee and the Redistricting Committee, which will oversee the once-adecade reapportionment process for legislative and congressional seats. Redrawn districts are expected to be in place for the 2022 elections.

The press release states that Security First, which is headquartered in Ormond Beach, felt a responsibility to support the local community as it faces current challenges during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“Ormond Beach is our home-

broadly at emergency management and how we can prepare Florida today for future threats,” Sprowls wrote in the memo to House members.

Democrats have pushed since spring for lawmakers to be called back to Tallahassee to address the economic and health impacts of the virus. With the pandemic causing massive damage to businesses and tax revenues, state economists have estimated lawmakers will be working with a potential budget shortfall of about $2.7 billion for the 20212022 fiscal year and $1.9 billion for the following budget year.

The Democrats’ calls for a special session have been rebuffed by Republican leaders, who in part have repeatedly said the state budget is bolstered by federal assistance, expanded budget reserves approved during the 2020 legislative session and cash-conserving vetoes by Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Sprowls’ announcement of his leadership team and the committee changes came two days after Republicans added to their overwhelming House majority in Tuesday’s elections. Lawmakers will hold an organization session Nov. 17 to formally swear in members and leaders, with the 2021 legislative session starting in March.

Florida’s employment improves First-time unemployment claims continue to drop in Florida as the leisure and hospitality industries sluggishly revive during the coronavirus pandemic.

Applications for jobless benefits in Florida decreased from 33,542 during the week that ended Oct. 24 to 28,702 during the week that ended Oct. 31, according to a U.S. Department of Labor estimate released Thursday.

The decrease came at the end

of the first month after Gov. Ron DeSantis lifted statewide coronavirus business restrictions that, in part, had limited the numbers of people who could dine in restaurants. DeSantis on Sept. 25 also prohibited local governments from closing restaurants and collecting fines from people who don’t wear face masks in public.

While unemployment claims have gone down recently in Florida, the state, like other parts of the country, has seen an increase in cases of COVID-19. As of Tuesday, Nov. 10, Florida had reported 852,174 cases since the pandemic started.

Cruises given OK to resume A sign of good news for the travel industry is the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Nov. 6 gave the cruise ship industry a framework to resume operations, lifting a “no sail” order in effect since mid-March.

Still, most fleets aren’t expected to return to operations until next year.

PortMiami, Port Canaveral, and Port Everglades are three of the top cruise ports in the world, with large passenger ships also operating out of the Port of Tampa Bay, the Port of Palm Beach and JaxPort.

Democrats to take a ‘long, hard look’ after losses Florida Republicans dominated the Nov. 3 elections from the top of the ballot on down, leaving Democrats searching for answers after more than two decades of GOP control of the state.

In a victory that by Sunshine State standards was a landslide, President Donald Trump defeated Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden by more than three percentage points in Florida, more than doubling the edge he held over Democrat Hillary Clinton four years ago.

Republicans upset two incum-

bent South Florida congresswomen, flipped five state House seats and could pick up a seat in the state Senate, making a mockery of Democrats’ hopes to cut into the GOP’s legislative dominance.

The across-the-board losses leave Democrats and their state party in shreds as they begin to gear up for mid-term elections in 2022, including a gubernatorial election.

Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, Florida’s only statewide elected Democrat, acknowledged that Florida Democrats “suffered some hard losses” on election night.

“Our party needs to take a long hard look at what went wrong in the election, and how we move forward,” she said in a prepared statement. “As leaders, we must do better, and we must all work together to mend our fractured political system.”

Nursing home residents can now leave and return Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration, which has made a concerted effort to scale back restrictions enacted because of the coronavirus, wants to make it easier for residents of long-term care facilities to reunite with families for the holidays — even it means forgoing COVID-19 testing.

The DeSantis administration last week provided answers to questions that nursing homes and other senior centers have about the state’s visitation policies, including whether residents can leave for the holidays and whether they have to be tested when they return.

They don’t.

Ormond Beach resident opens coworking space in Daytona Kyle Altes said remote working has shown many the value of having a workspace away from home.

Working from home can be distracting, isolating and less than inspiring, and one Ormond Beach resident has created a business to solve that problem: He’s opened a local coworking space.

Foundry Coworking located at 728 Fentress Blvd. in Daytona Beach is a shared space where remote workers can set up shop for a day, or rent a dedicated desk or office space. Owner Kyle Altes has seen this concept in cities like Seattle, Denver and Atlanta, and decided to bring it to the community. With so many more people working remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he said he believes many people will realize the value of having a dedicated workspace.

“It’s almost ironic that we need something that’s a little less convenient than our house,” Altes said.

Membership options range from $12 daily passes to $95 a month for use of the building’s main atrium, as well as from $250 a month for a desk space to $1,295 a month for an executive office space.

MONEY GRAB 4:08 p.m. — 100 block of South Nova Road Disorderly conduct. A Daytona Beach man entered a local tag office only to realize he dropped $100 in cash when he got out of his car. He immediately ran back outside to get the money, instructing his passenger to also look for it. As the pair searched, a 31-year-old Kissimmee woman walked over, picked up the cash and pocketed it, according to police report.

The man’s companion yelled that the woman had the money and the pair confronted her. The woman said they couldn’t prove the money was his and walked away.

Police found the woman inside a nearby restaurant. She told police that she worked two jobs, had her own money, and other statements the reporting officer noted “were irrelevant to the investigation.” The officer asked her how much money she had in cash, and she replied that she didn’t feel like she had to tell him.

The man told police he didn’t want to pursue charges if the woman gave him his money back. The woman denied having his money, but according to the report, agreed to send the man $100 using

Cash App. She was arrested for disorderly conduct and during a search of her belongings, the money was found and returned to the man.

She was released at the scene with a notice to appear in court.

A VERY BAD DAY 4:01 p.m. — 1400 block of West Granada Boulevard Information. A 62-year-old Ormond Beach man was involved a motor vehicle crash at a local grocery store parking lot and told the 911 dispatcher that “if he pulled out a gun and shot someone we would get there quicker.”

According to the report, police arrived at the scene and asked the man if he was armed due to his statement. He was patted down for weapons (none were found) and told police there was a revolver inside the vehicle. Police located it and ran its serial number in their system. It came up as stolen, but it turned out to be a mistake in the system.

Officers received a notice that the stolen gun entry was no longer valid, as it had been returned to its owner.

Officers released the man and returned his gun.

NOT-SO-BRIGHT IDEA 9:26 a.m. — 1500 block of West Granada Boulevard Petit theft. A 68-year-old Daytona Beach man was arrested after he stole 37 items from a local supermarket by skip-scanning at the selfcheckout.

The items were worth $116.26 and he only paid for $25.44. He told police that he was on a fixed income and that money was tight. He said it was a “stupid mistake” but that he had come up with the idea on his drive to the supermarket.

Because he had no prior criminal history, he was released with a notice to appear in court. He was also trespassed from the business.

Altes family since it was constructed in 1986. The idea to turn it into a coworking space was born in 2018, but it wasn’t until a year later that Altes finished setting up the space. Design and aesthetic is a passion of his, and he’s filled the Foundry Coworking with designer furniture from the 1950s and 1960s.

“I want to go into a space where someone put thought into the actual design of it, and that it the last thing that seems to be on the mind of most business complexes and business buildings,” Altes said.

The furniture pieces come from across the country, and go hand in hand with another company of his that sell these pieces.

Since he was a kid, Altes said he’s enjoyed creating spaces.

He also loves community and believes people often work more efficiently when able to feed off each other.

“The future is definitely going to be co-op — it’s shared, and that’s why Uber has been so successful,” Altes said. “I think at our core we realize that in order to maximize the use of our things, we share.”

‘Art is a necessity’

New outdoor art festival coming to One Daytona Nov. 14-15

A

new fine art festival is coming to town, featuring 90 artists and artisans from across the country.

The inaugural Brushes, Bites, and Blues festival at One Daytona, presented by Brown and Brown Insurance and in partnership with Gallery500, is taking place 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday Nov. 14, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sunday, Nov. 15. This free outdoor festival will have both juried and non-juried showcases, and the stage at Victory Circle will have a DJ and live blues entertainment. The festival also features a student art exhibit with Volusia County Schools, where approximately 30 students have works on display inside Gallery500.

“We are happy to host one of the only outdoor art festivals in the area this year and welcome the community to enjoy the weekend featuring artists from across the country,” said Gallery500 owner Lesa Kennedy, in a press release.

“We believe Brushes, Bites and Blues will offer an exciting cultural experience for area residents and visitors.”

Ormond Beach resident and artist Barbara Saunders has been involved in the festival’s organization since the start. She and a committee of other artists have long wanted to host an art festival at One Daytona, believing that its layout would be perfect for such a use. Now that the festival is finally happening, Saunders said she’s excited.

“We feel like there are people who are really yearning and aching to get out there and get back into a place of community where you’re feeling like there’s a sense of normalcy,” Saunders said.

The festival is encouraging attendees to maintain social distancing and wear masks when indoors. Hand sanitizing stations will also be available throughout One Daytona.

‘ART IS A NECESSITY’

Ormond Beach Kathleen Lusby is one of the juried artists taking part in the festival. She’s been making art since she was a child.

Primarily an oil painter, Lusby’s heart lies with creating portraits of people and animals. She said she’s always been drawn to portraits because of the challenge to capture personalities with paint, and, the challenge in portraying their likeness both technically and emotionally.

Lusby completes a lot of posthumous portraits by commission.

She finds that when she paints a person’s eyes, an emotional attachment is created.

She said she’s thrilled to participate in the festival, and that it’s an honor to have been invited to showcase her work. These kinds

of festivals bring so many different artists together, she said.

Lusby used to think purchasing art was a luxury, but now, she has a different perspective.

“I believe that art is a necessity for anyone, whether it’s photography or painting, arts and crafts,” Lusby said. “I mean it brings so much joy to people’s lives.”

Saunders will also be showcasing her work during the festival as a non-juried artist. She was involved in the art world for a long time — she taught, worked as a museum curator, represented artists — before she decided to dedicate herself to creating her own art. Like Lusby, she is mainly an oil painter, but dabbles in other mediums such as watercolors and pastels.

world, and she never feels more inspired than when painting outdoors. Plein air works translate to better connections, Saunders said, and with the world losing more of its natural beauty every day, she feels more motivated to paint outside of a studio.

“We’ll take a peek at something and a couple months later, all of that is gone, and so in a way plein air painters are chronicling sort of lost Florida and I like being a part of that,” Saunders said.

There’s something about looking at an art piece highlighting a mundane stretch of land, she

explained.

“You’re looking at it through the eyes of somebody who had an emotional experience looking at it themselves,” Saunders said.

“To me, that becomes a little bit more human and it’s a little bit more emotional. Maybe, on those beautiful occasions, you look at something in a painting and you say, ‘Oh my gosh, they captured it exactly how I feel about that when I look at that.’ That’s comforting — everything is about feeling like you’re connected.”

‘ANGEL’ RECEIVES NATIONAL HONOR Ormond Beach resident Barbara Eaton Brown, known as “Angel” Brown, has received the “One Person Can Make a Difference” award for 2020 from Network 1:27, a national child care association affiliated with Churches of Christ, according to a press release.

Brown’s service spans 60 years, most of it as a volunteer.

She was also a foster parent and became the co-founder of Christian Homes for Children Inc., a nonprofit that donated and raised funds to construct homes in south Florida for families in need. Over a 40-year period, the organization aided over 1,300 children, 300 of whom were adopted by their foster parents.

Brown also provided seminal guidance for the creation of the Extra Mile Learning Center, which helped to reduce the school failure rate among foster children. Upon her retirement, Brown and her husband George have operated the Volusia

house on John Anderson Drive was the top real estate transaction in Ormond Beach and Ormond-by-the-Sea for the week of Oct. 4-10 in the Multiple Listing Service. Michael and Lynda Helton, of Ormond Beach, sold 714 John Anderson Drive to Robert and Stacy Rikeman, of Ormond Beach, for $2.6 million Built in 2008, the house is a 4/5 with two halfbaths, two fireplaces, elevator, boat dock, boat house, swimming pool and 7,648 square feet.
