Man found dead in vehicle on U.S. 1

Ormond Beach City Manager Joyce Shanahan and City Attorney Randy Hayes earned near-perfect evaluation scores by the City Commission in their annual performance reviews, which were discussed at the Oct. 20 meeting.

Shanahan received an average score of 4.95 out of 5 and Hayes received an average score of 4.96 out of 5. Shanahan was judged on skills including leadership, decision-making, financial management and community relations, while Hayes was reviewed on skills including his management style of the city’s legal department and intergovernmental relations.

Both are longtime employees of the city. Hayes was hired on April 1, 1993, and Shanahan was hired on Feb. 2, 2009.

Shanahan, who turned down a city manager position with the city of Naples in 2018, thanked the commission for its review, saying that it’s a privilege to work with Hayes and that she doesn’t run the city alone. The commission and city staff has “made this a crown jewel of Florida,” she said.

Police found a 61-year-old Robert Rhodes, of St. Petersburg, dead inside his SUV parked outside the Love’s Travel Stop, located at 1657 N. U.S. 1, on Oct. 13.

Police determined he had been living out of his car, according to the police report.

FAITH promotes affordable housing FAITH pushes for $7 million affordable housing public trust fund, gains candidates support JARLEENE ALMENAS ASSOCIATE EDITOR

A coalition of religious congregations is seeking to establish a public trust fund of $7 million to bring affordable housing to Volusia County, and, during a virtual candidates forum on Monday, Oct. 19, they asked for the support of all those running for a seat on the County Council.

The Fighting Against Injustice Towards Harmony nonprofit, also known as FAITH, is no stranger toward providing housing to those in need; it’s been active in helping the homeless since 2011, according to the FAITH website, and played a role in bringing First Step Shelter to Daytona Beach.

FAITH is made up of 30 congregations, including Ormond’s Christ Presbyterian Church, Tomoka United Methodist, Community Unitarian Universalist and Unitarian Universalist Congregation.

This isn’t a new venture for FAITH, as it’s been calling for the creation of a local affordable housing trust fund since last year.

The organization states Volusia needs 16,000 affordable residential units to solve the housing issue.

Rev. Caitlin White, director and campus pastor of the Stetson Wesley Foundation, said FAITH is committed to seeing each of these 16,000 families have access to affordable housing. The “powers that be” may tell them it’s not

possible this year due to the pandemic, White said, or they may say they can’t make promises, but she maintained that the time to address affordable housing is now.

“I can be mistaken, but if there was a more critical moment than this one to ensure a booming, equitable economy and to create a vibrant community that we can all afford to live in, not just work in, I’m afraid I just can’t think of one,” White said.

CANDIDATES VOICE SUPPORT

The candidates present during the forum were County Council Chair candidates Deb Denys and Jeff Brower, District 2 candidate Danny Fuqua, and District 4 candidates Heather Post and Barbara Bonarrigo. Incumbent County Councilwoman for District 2 Billie Wheeler was unable to attend due to a family emergency.

They were asked three questions. First, if they would support and advocate for an affordable housing trust fund, to which all answered yes.

Second, they were asked if they would support and direct county staff to identify a new sustainable revenue source to bring in $7 million for the fund. Post and Bonarrigo said yes; Denys initially said no, but changed to a yes after explaining that she supported directing county staff toward the cause but that she could not commit to a $7 million figure.

Brower said no, believing that the trust fund should not be spearheaded by government, but rather, taken on by a private entity.

rom inside a barn filled with 200 VIPs at the 2A Ranch, just north of the Volusia-Flagler county line, Pastor Jearlyn Dennie’s prayer was broadcast outdoors to the crowd that was slowly making its way through security for a chance to see Donald Trump Jr., son of the president, on Oct. 17.

“Father, we give you thanks for making America great,” said Dennie, who is also chairwoman of the Flagler County Republican Executive Committee. Her voicing rising in enthusiasm, she called Trump the “appointed one” and thanked God for healing Trump of COVID-19.

She closed her prayer, and U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz echoed her in praising Trump.

“He is on fire,” Waltz said. “He truly has done more in four years than Biden’s done in 47. ... The only responsible thing to do is give this man four more years.”

The grand finale was the appearance of Trump Jr., looking fresh, energetic. He stood on the stage in the barn wearing a lavender button-down shirt and jeans and beamed an infectious smile.

To laughter and cheers, he praised his father and roasted Joe Biden, joking that Biden could never draw a crowd as large as even 200 people. “Joe couldn’t even make it out of the basement,” Trump Jr. said. “But he doesn’t have to leave the basement; the media will campaign for him.”

Whittin will soon fly to visit her mother, who has been in the ICU since April 24 with COVID-19. But Whittin said she still felt comfortable being at the rally. She said she didn’t wear a mask around her friends but planned to put one on when she was in the crowd.

“I take every precaution necessary,” Whittin said. “I don’t want to put my mom in harm’s danger, but we also can’t stop living. As long as we all take precautions, we will be safe.”

The Daytona Beach International Airport will utilize $1.7 million of its coronavirus relief dollars to provide financial relief to its impacted airlines and other passenger-reliant tenants.

These funds, accounting for 8.1% of the county’s $21 million in coronavirus relief funds by the Federal Aviation Administration, will offset revenue for the airport’s tenants by waiving certain fees and providing rental credits.

Apart from Delta and American Airlines, tenants such as rental car companies, food and beverage and parking will benefit from the financial accommodations, which were approved by the Volusia County Council at its Oct. 20 meeting.

Rick Karl, county director of aviation and economic resources, said that when the COVID-19 pandemic first impacted air travel, they began speaking with the airlines on how to best help them.

Karl said they demonstrated to Delta and American Airlines (two of the three airlines servicing the airport currently) that they were willing to be their partner.

“Without airline service, we don’t have an airport,” said Karl to the council.

He attributed their collaboration as a reason why American Airlines announced it would offer daily seasonal service to the Philadelphia and Dallas/Fort Worth airports.

That’s not to say that air travel to Daytona Beach International Air-

port has recovered. Data shared with the council shows that the number of passengers was down 61.2% in August 2020 compared to August 2019. But, it has gotten better, as Airport Director Karen Feaster said the airport hit “rock bottom” in April. The number of total passengers was down 93.5% compared to April of 2019, with April 4 seeing only 68 passengers in and out of the building.

For the month of September, Feaster said the number of total passengers was “only” down 47.6% compared to September 2019.

“It sounds very strange to say we’re only down 47% but in these strange times, that’s positive,” Feaster said.

The airport issued a press release shortly after the County Council approved the financial accommodations for the tenants, in which Feaster said the accommodations meet the intent of the FAA’s coronavirus relief package to keep airports in “reliable, safe operation to serve the aviation industry, the traveling public, support the economy and to keep airport and aviation workers employed.”

The press release also states that a 2019 Florida Department of Transportation report found that the airport has an economic impact of $2.09 billion.

County Councilman Ben Johnson said the airport has been thriving but that the coronavirus has triggered unprecedented times.

“These have been long-term partners and we need to keep them,” Johnson said. “Otherwise what happens is we’re going to lose them out of the airport. It’s going to be an empty shell. We cannot take care of our passengers and guests coming through that airport if we don’t do something about this.”

School district is asking struggling virtual students to return to brick-and-mortar Volusia County Schools is still working toward a reduction of ‘hybrid’ Volusia Live classes for the second quarter grading period.

About two-thirds of students in middle school and high school enrolled in Volusia Live are failing at least one class.

Data shared by the school district at the Volusia County School Board meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 13, shows that 65%, or 3,619 out of 5,533 students in high school enrolled in the county’s livestreamed classroom learning model have a D or an F grade in at least one class. At the middle school level, that number is slightly higher — 67%, or 2,778 students out of 4,158, have at least one D or an F grade.

The numbers of failing students decreases to 33%, or 2,001 out of 6,004, at the elementary level.

With this in mind, coupled with the fact the Volusia Live model was only approved for one semester, the school district is reaching out to the parents of the affected students and asking them to consider returning to brick-andmortar.

“The idea for them returning is that the sooner they’re back

in brick-and-mortar, the sooner we’re able to provide intervention for those students face-toface,” said Gabriel Berrio, Volusia County Schools assistant superintendent for high schools.

The district is also in the middle of revamping Volusia Live at the middle and high school levels to reduce the number of classrooms where teachers are simultaneously instructing both brick-andmortar and Live students. At one Volusia high school, these hybrid courses account of 95% of classes, with less than 1% of classes being “pure” Live classrooms.

An overhaul of classes of the Volusia Live model cannot be completed before the end of the first quarter grading period, Nov. 2, so as not to affect student’s credits, and would only be in effect for the second quarter since the Volusia Live model will end for all students on Jan. 22, unless the governor’s emergency order regarding schools is extended, and the district is not expecting this to occur.

“We can’t force a parent to bring a child to school, nor do we want them to go anywhere else,” Colon said. “So I think we’re going to have to be prepared to expand Volusia Online to ensure that those parents are covered.”

According to the Volusia Online website, 8,988 students are currently enrolled in that learning model.

School Board member Carl Persis asked to see the data for students enrolled in brick-andmortar with a D or an F in at least one class to compare with the Volusia Live data, as well as the data for kids with a failing grade who are currently enrolled in a hybrid course.

“I think the more data we really have before we jump to a conclusion, there may be some other factors here that could help us with some of these decisions down the line,” he said.

One issue that could arise with students transitioning to Volusia Online from Volusia Live midyear is that Volusia Online follows a different educational curriculum, School Board member Jamie Haynes pointed out. A transition like that could create a learning gap in a student’s education.

BRIEFS Police Department reaccredited The Ormond Beach Police Department has been officially reaccredited by the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation, announced the city on Thursday, Oct. 15.

This makes OBPD one of “only 30%-40% of accredited police departments out of more than 385 law enforcement agencies in Florida,” the press release states. The accreditation renewal process happens every three years. OBPD was first accredited in 2002. It lost its accreditation in 2012 due to issues with its evidence room, but was reaccredited in 2014 and has passed review each time since.

“Our department continues to grow professionally and to do our jobs at a consistently high level,” said Police Chief Jesse Godfrey in the press release. “We are committed to the accreditation process and the transparency and accountability that it brings under the philosophy of the 21stcentury policing model.”

The CFLEA audits standards including role, responsibilities and relationship with other agencies; management and administration; use of force reporting; and traffic law enforcement.

“Accreditation benefits include everything from an increase in public confidence, higher crime prevention, and an assurance that recruitment, selection, and promotion processes are fair and equitable, to a raised morale and pride from the state and local recognition of professional competence,” the press release states.

Dear Editor: The proposed Hand Avenue Extension would bridge eight lanes of I-95 and require another bridge over the Tomoka River, a Florida Outstanding Waterway with environmentally protected buffers. This idea was first proposed more than two decades ago and still enjoys unanimous support from Ormond Beach city commissioners, despite its removal from the county road priority list. The estimated price tag, now at $50 million, continues to rise.

The Ormond Beach mayor and city commissioners have touted the Hand Avenue Extension as necessary to relieve additional traffic gridlock on Granada Boulevard when 10,000 planned homes (Avalon Park) are built west of I-95. (Keep in mind, many Ormond residents already use Hand Avenue as an alternative to Granada Boulevard.) The commission’s theory is highly questionable in that most eastbound traffic using the proposed extension will likely turn left on Williamson, Clyde Morris, or Nova, still ending up on Granada Boulevard, as there is no bridge to the beach on Hand Avenue.

Additionally, east of Nova Road, Hand Avenue turns into a residential road with a 25-mph speed limit. Right now, most Daytona residents living west of I-95 use LPGA as their main east-west artery.

The Hand Avenue Extension will make access to Granada easier for those residents, present and future.

A more likely rationale for the Hand Avenue extension is the opportunity to accelerate commercial and residential development of lands west of I-95, and to enhance the marketability of those properties.

The Ormond Beach City Commission needs to abandon the charade of Hand Avenue traffic relief and embrace more practical traffic solutions for West Granada, where the commission continues to approve new commercial development.

Fact-checking candidate mailers Dear Editor: Glossy mailers from developer-financed incumbents keep filling mailboxes with misleading information.

Claims made on radio talk shows and in public forums have also raised eyebrows.

Mayor Bill Partington: 17 years in office Claim: “Spearheaded creation of Ormond Beach Environmental Discovery Center.”

Fact: The Discovery Center was the brainchild of a former commissioner, the late Joyce Ebbets. A half-mile directly north of the Discovery Center, development waivers obliterated 23 acres of environment on a migratory bird flyway, clearcutting a forest for a Wawa and carwash.

Claim: “…conserving our greenspaces and celebrating our environmental heritage.”

Fact: Voted to weaken our wetland and development rules, abolished the citizen environmental advisory board

and development review board, denied citizen request for a tree advisory board.

Claim: “…provisions in place to protect our residents and community from any health threat…”

Fact: Failed to mandate masks in public against universal recommendations from medical science. Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach, DeLand, Palm Coast, other cities mandated masks.

Zone 1 Commissioner Dwight Selby: 4 years in office Claim: “Has led the charge to keep city spending in check…Fought to save you every penny” Fact: Voted to buy a church for $780,000, a boat dock for $1.3 million, 105 Medjool palm trees at $5,000 each; advocates $50 million Hand Ave. extension over I-95 and Tomoka River.

Claim: “fighting to convert aging, hazardous septic tanks, reducing north peninsula dependence” Fact: North peninsula is in county jurisdiction. The conversion was rejected by both county and city residents.

No leadership to convert 800 septic tanks still functioning in Ormond Beach.

Zone 2 Commissioner Troy Kent: 17 years in office Claim: “Hand Avenue extension will relieve traffic on Granada Boulevard.”

Fact: $50 million overpass at I-95 will actually funnel more traffic onto Granada.

Claim: “Proud of the job I’ve done decreasing taxes during a pandemic.”

Fact: Going to rollback saved only $14 or less for most homeowners. In election year, tax reduction significant only for wealthy, high-priced homes and large commercial properties. Revenue shortfalls from pandemic estimated at hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.

Zone 4 Commissioner Rob Littleton: 4 years in office Claim: “Police officers and firefighters important to maintaining a safe and healthy community.”

Fact: Failed to support a mask mandate to protect first responders and other essential workers.

Claim: “Police station should be moved out of flood zone to free up commercial real estate.”

Fact: The police station, 20 years old, on land that has never flooded, reduces traffic.

Bill Partington: “Fake facts” in an opinion letter by my opponents don’t concern me. Ormond residents know I’ve worked hard to create a government that is more efficient, more effective and more accountable. In working for cleaner safer and healthier neighborhoods I’ve created a meaningful track record of results, solutions and success.

Dwight Selby: Fact: I have consistently supported low taxes and Ormond has the lowest tax rate in East Volusia.

Fact: Health Department rated Ormond-By-The-Sea as three

of five worst areas for septic tanks in Volusia. I will never stop fighting for clean water, safer aquifer, and a nutrientfree Halifax River.

The rebuttal to endorsements Dear Editor: On Oct. 5, Terri Kolaska submitted a letter and was advised it would appear in the Oct. 8 edition of the Ormond Beach Observer. Granted, the general public has no say in the matter of letters being published. But, being told it would be printed, one would just assume ...

Anyway, it did not get in print until the Oct. 15 edition as it was “bumped” for an article by the publisher, John Walsh, whose article was posted online 2 1/2 days after Terri’s letter was posted. Her letter was written and submitted to promote her choice of candidates for city and county political positions. Curiously, Mr. Walsh’s article contained a similar intent, but with a completely different cast of characters. Let’s examine some other oddities about Mr. Walsh’s article.

1. He states that “The following endorsements...are my personal views.” Not only does he state “we” four times in just the first two paragraphs, the article is entitled “Observer supports candidates...” Who is “we”? I thought this to be “personal.”

2. Bottom of second paragraph: “My views are...culmination of conversations with friends...” etc. Terri (and I) had conversations with numerous local people also, probably not in the same social circles as Mr. Walsh’s contacts. But, through Terri, our contacts deserved to have their voices heard, too, in a timely manner.

3. Walsh supports the Hand Avenue Extension as does the current city commission. This will destroy Ormond Beach and the wetlands west of I-95 to Tymber Creek Road.

4. I have been informed that the challengers for the mayoral and City Commission seats were never informed that the answers to the interview questions were going to be used as a comparative measure between them and the incumbents for election guide comparison — the result of short answers to questions from Mr. Walsh.

5. Walsh endorses Deb Denys for county chair. Denys did not even respond to questions for the “Election Guide” interview.

6. Walsh’s article over 500 words. Terri’s “letter” less than 200 words. (Note: Maximum 400 words for a letter) 7. Walsh lives in Palm Coast, yet is giving advice to you folks in Ormond Beach as to whom he wants you to vote for.

Walsh is the publisher — so, I guess he can do all that.

Vote for Bridger, Grigsby, Smith, Romeo, Brower and Post. All votes matter.

John Walsh Endorses Ormond Incumbents Dear Editor: The Ormond Beach Observer, reporting on our city government with a high level of professionalism, is crucial to the local democratic process.

During the 2018 election campaigns, Publisher John Walsh earned respect with his sincere written apology for giving discounts and reserved political ad buys to incumbents and their PACS. He was cleared by the Elections Commission of any wrongful intent.

The Observer endorsed the incumbents in the 2018 election, and Mr. Walsh recently gave his personal written endorsement to the four incumbents running in 2020, explaining his decisions were rooted in his inherent support of growth for business, advertising, and jobs.

He agreed with the mayor and commissioners on major issues, including the Hand Avenue extension, their partnerships with developers, and the adoption of state wetland regulations that replaced Ormond’s strong standards.

Mr. Walsh explained that he compared the Observer candidate questionnaire answers with his own and endorsed the incumbents when those views aligned. A logical methodology, but the endorsement came as a surprise to the challengers who weren’t called in for interviews and were led to believe the newspaper would not be making 2020 endorsements. When they were sent the questionnaire, challengers were not told the publisher would use their answers in deciding his endorsements.

Not that a more transparent process would have led to different candidate answers or different publisher endorsements.

Each of the six questions limited candidate answers to twenty-five words. This narrow scope allowed little context and ignored other key questions. Has the commission acted responsibly in the pandemic to protect vulnerable citizens and essential workers? Should Biketoberfest vendor permits have been granted? What is the city doing about vacant storefronts and small businesses struggling to survive outside the downtown CRA zone? Are elections fair when incumbents receive tens of thousands of special interest dollars from corporations, developers, and PACS? Clear conflicts of interest can be found in every incumbent campaign report. The challengers, struggling to get their messages out, have refused all corporate money.

Some have had to invest personal funds to pay campaign bills.

Despite the disappointing endorsements, the Observer must be commended for publishing the candidate comparisons that provided a level playing field for challengers, and for printing reader’s editorials that allow all voices to be heard.

Ormond Beach is fortunate to be served by this gem of a community newspaper.

CHECK BY MAIL 3:53 p.m. — 200 block of Williamson Boulevard Fraud. A 56-year-old Ormond Beach man wrote a $53 check to a medical provider. His wife deposited it into the drop box outside of the post office.

Four days later, when he checked his bank account, he saw almost $3,500 had been withdrawn from his account.

According to the report, the man reviewed the check image and saw that it had been altered.

Police took note of the name the check was changed to be made out to, and provided the man with a victim’s rights pamphlet and case number. The man wished to pursue charges.

The bank reimbursed him for the fraudulent withdrawal.

Volusia emergency visits with COVID symptoms

his belongings and move to the parking lot where he would issue a trespass warning. The man then cursed at the officer and told him to both leave him alone and arrest him.

The officer, according to the police report, told him he didn’t want to arrest him but the man said he wanted to know “how the arrest procedure was done.”

The officer walked away, leaving the man with a fellow officer, and ran the man’s name through the trespass warning system. The man had never been trespassed from any of the city parks.

When he approached the man again, the officer noted he was in a better mood, but ultimately, the man refused to sign the trespass warning when advised he couldn’t return to any park for six months. He laid back down on the bench and cursed at the officer. He was taken to jail.

DON’T BE SUSPICIOUS 1:50 p.m. — 100 block of Emerald Oaks Lane Suspicious incident. An officer was dispatched to a local subdivision after receiving an anonymous tip that a truck was using a fire hydrant to fill its water tanks.

While the officer was unable to find a truck in the area, he did find a pressure washing company van. The officer asked the employee if he hooked up to the water hydrant by any chance, and the employee said he had, but that he had “cleaned a tank out,” according to the police report.

The employee said he hooked up to the hydrant because there was too much pressure on his tires and he needed to let some water out of the tanks. The officer thought his statements seemed to be “nonsensical” but because the caller who notified law enforcement was anonymous, and there were no witnesses to speak with, he had no evidence to support a criminal charge, the report states.

During a COVID-19 news briefing on Thursday, Oct. 15, Holly Smith, communications manager for the Department of Health in Volusia County, said that the county is starting to see a new increase in daily coronavirus cases.

Though the 14-day positivity remains below 5%, as it has since Sept. 24, Smith said the county is seeing clusters of new cases being reported in households.

In addition, the free COVID-19 testing site at the Volusia County Fairgrounds has started to see a “significant increase in the number of people having symptoms.” Previously, Smith said that testing site had seen more asymptomatic individuals seeking a COVID-19 test. As of the time of the press conference, a total of 7,000 people have been tested a that site, said county Emergency Management Director Jim Judge.

As of Oct. 20, Volusia County has seen a cumulative total of 12,038 cases of coronavirus and 310 deaths. According to data released by DOH, the positivity rate for the last seven days has ranged from 3.10% to 8.71%.

Beginning Monday, Nov. 2, the COVID-19 testing site will relocate to 1000 Live Oak St. in New Smyrna Beach, according to a county press release. The site is located behind the city’s library.

It will offer self-swab PCR testing and operate from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week until Nov. 30.

The site will close on Nov. 26 and 27 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

LEADING Ormond Beach resident named by NASCAR Foundation as finalist for humanitarian award

Charlene Greer has dedicated the past nine years to volunteering with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Volusia/Flagler.

rmond Beach resident Charlene Greer tells people she has a full-time volunteering job.

For the last nine years, Greer has donated her time and efforts to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Volusia/ Flagler, and for the past two years, has served on its Board of Directors. Working with children has been a calling of hers, she said, and investing in their futures is more rewarding than any sum of money.

“I always say that my payment far outlasts a paycheck,” Greer said. “Paychecks come and go, but my payment is eternal and lasting.”

Greer is one of four finalists for the NASCAR Foundation’s 10thannual Betty Jane France Humanitarian award, as announced in a press release on Oct. 13. The award, named in honor of the foundation’s founder, is presented every year to a NASCAR fan who has done exceptional volunteer work on behalf of local children, according to the press release. To date, 36 finalists have been recognized with $1,575,000 for the causes they represent.

From now until noon on Nov. 4, the community is able to vote for the finalist of their choice to receive the award by visiting NASCARfoundation.org/Award.

Each finalist is guaranteed a minimum donation of $25,000 from the NASCAR Foundation, but the overall winner will receive $100,000 for their cause.

“These finalists are incorporating NASCAR and the excitement of the sport into the important work they do — enriching children’s lives,” said Mike Helton, the NASCAR Foundation chairman, in the press release. “Each one of them is exceptional and I think our fans will have a tough choice voting for just one.”

Greer grew up in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Each year on Labor Day, she and her family spent the day at the Darlington Raceway, and since her brothers participated in motorsports, she recalled they spent a lot of time at racing events.

Then every Sunday, after they came home from church, her family would turn their TV on.

They’d eat fried chicken, green beans and mashed potatoes while watching NASCAR. “That was a very real lifestyle,” Greer recalled. “That’s how I was brought up.”

NASCAR continued to play a big role in her life. Her first date with her husband took place at the Greenville-Pickens Speedway in South Carolina.

In 2008, she and her husband moved to Ormond Beach.

Four years later, once her twin boys had graduated high school, she got involved with the Boys

and Girls Club after getting connected while volunteering for the annual Jeep Beach event.

A former teacher, working with children was a natural fit for Greer. Not every child is given the same opportunities, she said, and lending them a helping hand and encouragement is important.

“They need to know that they are important and that they are worthy of the time and the talents and the gifts that we invest into these kids,” she said.

With the Boys and Girls Clubs, Greer helps to organize and fund its annual Honor Roll Banquet, an opportunity to help recognize the kids that are acing their classes at school. This helps encourage them to keep up their studies, Greer said.

Hearing her name mentioned in the same sentence as Betty Jane France’s is an honor, Greer said.

The Ormond Beach resident added that it’s also overwhelming since there are many people doing good deeds in the community.

She’s nominated alongside a Tennessee man advocating for an organization that provides free running and sports prosthetics to lower-limb amputees; a Georgia man who represents a volunteer pilot organization for children and adults needing transportation for medical care; and a Virginia man who represents a foundation that builds playsets for children battling pediatric cancer.

“In this day and age, it’s sad that that’s overshadowed by so much going on in the world, but to be one of four people chosen to represent the good that is still happening is beyond words and extremely humbling,” Greer said.

“It’s an honor just to be mentioned.”

Greer, who also played a pivotal role in creating a nonprofit entity for the Jeep Beach event, feels it’s important to give back to the community we live in.

“One day this community is going to take care of me, so it’s my responsibility to take care of the community,” she said.

t’s pumpkin season at Tomoka Christian Church.

A total of 2,000 pumpkins of all shapes and sizes were unloaded on Oct. 12 by volunteers, and residents have the chance to pick out and buy their favorite in the patch until Oct. 30.

The church’s pumpkin patch has been held annually for at least 10 years, and it serves as a fundraiser for the church’s global shortterm mission trips.

Meaghan Massy, short-term missions director at Tomoka Christian Church, said this year’s pumpkin patch wasn’t as easy to put on due to COVID-19, but that they pushed

through because they knew the community would appreciate it and support the fundraiser.

“I think it’s even better to see because of what is happening and people are still showing up to help,” she said.

They also like to provide photo opportunities for families so the experience is fun for everyone, Massy added. Running the patch is the best part.

“You get to see people you normally wouldn’t get to to meet, and just walking out and being part of their family tradition — that’s fun,” Massy said. “I love it.”

Tomoka Christian Church’s pumpkin patch is open 3-7 p.m.

Monday to Friday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday to Sunday.

ORMOND INVENTOR MAKES FINALS

The college will use the funds to support its rapid credentialing programs designed to be completed in one to 18 weeks to assist unemployed, underemployed or furloughed workers.

Qualifying participants could also complete a program at little to no cost.

DSC will offer nine programs, both credit and non-credit, and the college expects about 450 participants to enroll in training through May 2021. The programs include office support, HVAC installer, firefighter and correctional officer tracks. Bryson Pritchard

Ormond Beach resident and Stetson University School of Business Administration senior Bryson Pritchard has been selected as one of 10 finalists in the 2020 Collegiate Inventors Competition for his dyad syringe invention, announced the university recently in a press release.

Pritchard, an entrepreneurship and professional sales student at Stetson, is a critical care technician in the intensive care unit of Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach. FBH LAUNCHES HOMEWORK HELPLINE On Sept. 21, Food Brings Hope launched its inaugural virtual homework helpline, one of several initiatives conceptualized by Founder and Chair Forough Hosseini to provide the nonprofit’s TeenZone program students with access to tools and resources necessary to do well in school even during a pandemic, according to a press release.

Students can log in to a Zoom meeting where they will work in small assigned breakout groups with a teacher or peers. The helpline is currently operating solely for FBH TeenZone students in Volusia County middle schools from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Monday to Thursday. FBH seeks to expand this model, the press release states. Teachers on the helpline are primarily focused on math and science.

DSC will offer nine programs, both credit and non-credit, and the college expects about 450 participants to enroll in training through May 2021.

CRUISIN’ FOR SCHOOL SUPPLIES Tony Cassata’s fifth-annual “Cruisin’ the Hill for School Supplies” is coming to Holly Hill’s City Hall lawn from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31, and this classic vehicle event has brought in over $50,000 in school supplies for the two schools in Holly Hill, according to a press release.

Last year, the event helped to fill a school bus with supplies. Money is also raised by Cassata’s event partners, O’Reilly Auto Parts and Chassis Crafters. Other companies participating include Best Price Trailers, Daytona Bolt and Nut and Bob’s Space Racers.

The Lady Sandcrabs, who are currently 5-0 against Volusia County schools, had their usual lineup, including rising star, Kara Beissel who on Oct. 10 and 11 earned a silver medal for block 1 and a gold medal for block 2 at the FYBO Junior Gold Championships at Boardwalk Bowl, Orlando.

After struggling with some of the match play, she eventually went on to take the U15 Championship. Additionally, Kara was declared the FYBO Bowler of the Year.
