BRIEFS 13-year-old dies in motorcycle crash A 13-year-old boy from Brooksville died in a motorcycle crash in the 600 block of North Nova Road on Saturday, Oct. 10.

Police reported that around 3:29 p.m., a northbound white passenger car began to make a left turn into the Tomoka Oakwood North Condominiums when he was struck by a black motorcycle, whose driver was on the wrong side of the road. The driver, Robert Penny of Brooksville, was going northbound in a southbound lane of North Nova Road.

Penny, the victim’s father, suffered serious injuries. He was taken to the hospital. His son died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash.

The final phase of the salt marsh restoration began on Sept. 21.

The clearing of marshland at North Peninsula State Park isn’t a cause for alarm — it’s part of Florida Park Services final phase of a salt marsh restoration project that began back in 2009.

Department of Environmental Protection spokesperson Alexandra Kuchta said in an email that “restoring this salt marsh habitat will limit exotic and

invasive vegetation, promote greater tidal exchange across the salt marsh areas, restore habitat for estuary fish, shellfish and other wildlife species and increase opportunities for environmental education and outdoor recreation.”

According to the state parks website, these local marshes were impacted in the late 1800s and early 1900s when the Intracoastal Waterway was created. Since 2009, the state has completed six phases of

restoration in over 100 acres.

One of the invasive species removed during the clearing was the Brazilian peppertree, which is originally from tropical South America.

Kuchta said the contractor will begin re-vegetating the marsh once the rest of timber is cleared and debris is burned.

The park is open and no closures of public areas are anticipated.

Crane incident on Airport Road A crane flipped over and became stuck on Airport Road on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Fire Chief Richard Sievers said the driver of the crane swerved to avoid a vehicle who was starting to drift into their lane. There were no injuries.

.S. Rep. Michael Waltz went “undercover” at a local Ormond Beach manufacturer on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

As part of his “Undercover Congressman” program, Waltz took on mask sewing at FitUSA. Staff showed him the ropes and the congressman tried his hand at making his own masks.

Previously, FitUSA, whose plant is located in the Airport Business Park, manufactured sports apparel but began producing personal protective equipment in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. It produces face masks, gowns and hospital curtains, according to a press release. Its workforce has also increased to 100.

A move could be on the horizon for FitUSA’s personal protective equipment manufacturing operations, as President Troy Olson weighs an incentive package offered by the state of Georgia.

While Olson said he can’t disclose the dollar figure of the incentive, he said it is “substantially larger than what Florida has.”

Transitioning his business from apparel to personal protective equipment opened new doors for FitUSA and Olson said they recently earned a contract to produce disposable masks. That will allow him to add 350 jobs, but it is a $13 million venture including equipment, new employees and needed certifications, according to Olson.

“This is one of those projects that we need help,” Olson said. “I’m a small business trying to grow into something that the country needs.”

He said he’s hoping Waltz will help them at the state level to get that help, but without an incentive from the state, he has to “do the math” as a business owner and move the personal protective equipment operations to Georgia.

He wishes to keep the sports apparel side of the business in Ormond Beach, however, and additionally, is hoping to expand it.

“I’m going to do everything in my power to keep everything I have here because it’s my staff that has stepped up to the plate and has made the difference in PPE,” he said.

“There’s some responsibility here, and we’re asking him to help us fix it,” Gaynor said.

Board Member Mike Scudiero said the homeowners surrounding the Ormond Grande project likely would never have wanted to see that property developed. The project actually began construction in 2004 but halted in 2006 due to the recession.

“I think there’s not really another good option here that’s going to make the nearby residents happy,” Scudiero said. “I think you have to remember what the property owner’s rights are here, and you heard it — there was a time where this could have been an industrial plant.”

the project’s proposals be tabled until the Mynchenberg implements a solution to the standing water in the ditch, which he said posed a threat of flooding, erosion, transient alligators and decreased safety to the neighborhood’s children. A couple homeowners have also obtained an attorney for representation on the matter.

Ormond Lakes resident Thomas Gaynor also spoke at the meeting, saying that the standing water has been there since 2006. He’s been active on committees within the HOA since 2005, including the stormwater committee, and pointed out that Mynchenberg designed the stormwater systems for Ormond Lakes and the upcoming Ormond Grande proj-

The Planning Board unanimously recommended approval for a development order, rezoning and preliminary plat request for the construction of 60-townhome units off U.S. 1, hoping that the project engineer and the Ormond Lakes homeowners association can come to an agreement to solve the existing drainage issues affecting nearby residents.

A point of contention between the two parties is a ditch in the back of a property on Cliffside Drive, which was constructed as a solution to previous stormwater issues in 2009, explained Planning Director Steven Spraker at the meeting. Ormond Grande will not be discharging water into that ditch, according to Spraker. Project engineer Parker Mynchenberg, who is one-third owner of the project, said he’s willing to maintain the ditch regardless, as well as donate fill and pay for a portion of the piping the HOA seeks to complete.

In the video, City Commissioner Dwight Selby mentioned Ormond’s expanding commercial tax base, as the city’s taxable value for industrial and office property increased by $40 million, or 16%, in one year. He said businesses working on expansions or relocations invested over $44 million in land, buildings and machinery.

These businesses created 400 new jobs, with a combined total of $7 million in payroll.

Commissioner Troy Kent spoke about the Municipal Airport, including the acceptance of a grant by the Federal Aviation Administration for Taxiway Delta. Commisioner Rob Littleton spoke about the improvements in the North U.S. 1 corridor and Commissioner Persis mentioned the downtown improvements.

In a year marked by a global pandemic, Mayor Bill Partington said in a video address that “no statistics could ever reveal the unparalleled collaboration we have seen here in Ormond Beach.”

“Even today, there are no easy answers as we all continue to navigate this new horizon together,” the mayor said.

The video was played during Ormond’s State of the City event held on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at the Oceanside Golf and Country Club. Attendance was limited to 100 people due to COVID-19, and tables were spread out to allow for social distancing. In the mayor’s introduction, provided to the Ormond Beach Observer by the city, Partington said he is honored to serve as mayor to a city that “has weathered many a storm and come out stronger on the other side.” He said he was confident the community will ride out the COVID-19 storm together.

“We have all come together to support one another in ways we never imagined — whether it be sharing resources or completely changing business models to support the new needs of local residents and our nation,” Partington said. “Ormond Beach continues to be a community of people who persevere, who hope, and who

Dear Editor: Simply put, we need new leadership in Ormond Beach and in Volusia County. The builders with their campaign funds and bulldozers control those in power and, essentially, control us. This is the first “Letter to the Editor” I have ever submitted. I would like it to be my last. I have done my homework. I hope those of you reading this have done yours.

My recommendations to get “we the people” represented and back in control of the way our lives are affected, I am suggesting that you vote for the following individuals for a new, and clean, slate: City of Ormond Beach: n Rob Bridger — For mayor n Tim Grigsby — For Zone 1 Commissioner n Ken Smith — For Zone 2 Commissioner n David Romeo — For Zone 4 Commissioner Volusia County: n Jeff Brower — For County Council Chair n Heather Post — For County Council District 4 Representative By all means vote. It is your right to express yourself by selecting those individuals you want to represent you over the next few years. Make Ormond Beach and Volusia County green again!

Boat dock was not a waste of money Dear Editor: I strongly believe that the city made a wise investment in Cassen Park. Unlike other local cities, Ormond Beach has never been able to invite local boaters to stop, shop, dine and play in our beautiful downtown. These are visitors that will help our small businesses without adding a single car to the traffic on Granada Boulevard.

The new floating dock represents much more than dockage for 12 boats. Twelve boats are not permanently moored there. Boats come and go at all times of the day as folks come and use our downtown. Because of COVID-19, the city has not yet promoted the use of the docks to the public since its completion. No ribbon cutting or advertising has been done. Once COVID-19 is in our rearview mirror, and the boating public is made aware of its existence, I am sure many of the 40,000 registered boats in Volusia County will be tying up at our docks and enjoying our downtown. I do not believe anyone can argue that a thriving downtown isn’t important to the vitality of our entire community.

Also, to set the record straight, a grant from the Florida Inland Navigation District of $200,000 helped defray some of the costs of the dock. The rest of the money used for the waterfront project came from CRA funds. A CRA is a special taxing district. A small portion of property taxes from the specific downtown area where the docks are located are returned annually to the city by Volusia County. These dollars can only be used in the CRA district, and are not able

to be used on projects in other parts of the city.

Additionally, a large chunk of the expense was related to extending the original design for a breakwater. The longer breakwater helps protect not only the floating docks but also the hundreds of feet of fixed fishing docks, boat and kayak launches around the bridge area. Repairs to that area after Hurricane Irma cost more than $750,000. The breakwater protects that investment.

It is hard to believe that a beautiful community like ours with a great river flowing through its center has taken so long to develop a plan that will allow thousands of boaters access to all our downtown has to offer. The dock at Cassen Park is a first-class facility that will be bringing vitality to our downtown for years to come.

Fund the Police Department Dear Editor: It is inexcusable that we have a leaking roof in our police station. That doesn’t mean that we need to spend an estimated $35 million on a new 73,000-square-foot facility, located on the very edge of city limits. I want to support our wonderful police officers and our world class chief; I personally believe that $35 million dollars would be better spent on more personnel and better equipment.

The concern I have is why they want to move the police station, because of fear of flooding during a hurricane. I looked into this concern using UF’s storm surge estimator and found that it would take a direct hit of a category 4 hurricane for the police station to have 3 inches of flooding; in fact, according to FEMA, the police station isn’t in a flood zone. In the 140-year recorded history of the city, the land has not flooded. Two of our current city commissioners have publicly acknowledged that commercial redevelopment is a motivating factor for moving the station.

When I reviewed the 2019 meeting notes, they spent $30,000 to have a study completed to determine a new location for the police station.

I also saw their estimates for a new roof, new air condition and found these estimates to be outrageous. I ask myself, are they getting bids for these estimates? In the meantime, the roof is still leaking two years later. Inexcusable.

Follow the campaign dollars Dear Editor: Website examination of candidate campaign reports in the four Ormond Beach city commission races through Sept. 18: The mayor and the other three incumbents report over $135,000 in donations, most of it from developers, corporations and political action committees.

The four challengers, Rob

Bridger, Tim Grigsby, Ken Smith, and David Romeo report a combined total of over $28,000 from retirees, individuals and their own bank accounts. No money from developers, corporations, or PACs. The four incumbents received $2,000 each from downtown redeveloper Bill Jones; $1,000 each from Foundation Risk Partners in Destin; $1,000 each from A.L. Rosenbaum LLC; and $1000 each from Lewis Heaster’s BHL Inc. Three incumbent commissioners received $1,000 each from the Living Life with Purpose PAC out of Tallahassee; $500 each from Waste Pro, the city’s solid waste contractor and $500 each from the Florida Realtors PAC. Local developers backed the four incumbents with varying amounts: Paul Holub, total $7,350 from six subsidiary companies; Charles Lichtigman, Granada Plaza Group, total $4,850; and Vanacore corporations, total $5,500. A Mori Hosseini company and P&S Paving gave $1,000 each to one candidate. M. Ghyabi, a paid Ormond Beach consultant, and her attorney husband gave $1,000 each to the mayor.

On the expenditure side, two incumbents paid $2,500 total to an Ormond Beach political strategist who is an appointed member of the city Planning Board while serving as a paid spokesman-representative for the PBA police union.

These same two incumbents made generous payments to family members to distribute campaign signs. The bulk of incumbent expenditures were for multiple glossy campaign mailers.

The mailers feature family photos and portray incumbents as environmental champions preserving greenspace, water supply, and the Loop, while protecting us from COVID-19 and natural disasters. They falsely guarantee high quality of life through smart growth, planned development and low property taxes.

Rob Bridger, Tim Grigsby, Ken Smith, and David Romeo, free of corporate influence, each sent a single mailer, challenging the incumbent claims and offering the fresh ideas reported in Observer’s candidate comparisons. Rob is retired, Ken owns a small business, and Tim and David are employed by local companies. Honorable and courageous, they face a tough fight going up against the businessas-usual status quorum in an election system controlled by money. A system only voters can change.

I’ve worked hard creating the community of choice and quality of life we want and deserve. It is clear my priority is Main Street, not Wall Street ... It’s obvious my supporters wholeheartedly agree.

Dwight Selby: There is no right more important than freedom of speech. As an elected official, people frequently say and write things about me that are misleading or false. That is their right ... but it doesn’t make it right. I stand for low taxes, high-wage jobs, quality of life, protecting the environment, and I will never defund the police.

The incumbents have served us well Dear Editor: I am pleased to recommend the following candidates in this year’s City of Ormond Beach: n Bill Partington – Mayor n Dwight Selby – Commissioner Zone 1 n Troy Kent – Commissioner Zone 2 n Rob Littleton – Commissioner Zone 4 All are incumbents, and they have done an outstanding job in leading the city in recent years. They have served us well and deserve to be returned to office alongside Commissioner Susan Persis who was unopposed. As a 50-year resident, I think the quality of life here has never been better and the future never looked more promising.

All have opponents who, in my opinion, share a pessimistic and unwelcoming no-growth attitude which is antithetical to free markets and the opportunity, prosperity, liberty and most of all, respect for property rights which flow therefrom. Their opponents want to re-adopt a bevy of onerous and subjective environmental and land development regulations which the city rightly did away with some years ago. They also want to reinstate a number of useless feel-good advisory boards which do nothing but squander staff time and gum up the decision making process. Their opponents reject out-of-hand any discussion of a Hand Avenue – I-95 flyover before the full impact of the Avalon Park Daytona project has been determined and funding options evaluated.

The same misguided attitudes and policies their opponents want to re-impose are the reasons much of the land south along Clyde Morris Boulevard and Williamson Boulevard, and the land west of I-95 south of State Road 40 (where Avalon Park will be developed) was annexed into the city of Daytona Beach and not Ormond Beach. And, it’s the reason we have a police station on one of the most valuable commercial parcels in our blossoming downtown area.

Ormond Beach has seen this horror movie before: Nightmare on South Beach Street, and we don’t need an encore with different actors.

Investment capital is the lifeblood of a prosperous freemarket economy, and it flows to where it is both welcomed and well-treated. Our current mayor and commissioners understand this and it is obvious their opponents do not.

Rob Bridger: The letter recommending incumbent candidates isn’t an endorsement; it’s an indictment of our incumbent mayor’s abdication of leadership in this pandemic, his failures to grow our economy and to protect our environment. I support smart growth, not “no-growth.” Regulations/ boards proposed increase citizen participation in decision making about responsible development.

Tim Grigsby: Commissioners were elected to represent people, not money. Community values were sold to developers and out-of-town speculators contributing campaign money, totaling over $138,000 — Selby $39,675 — keeping incumbents in power. Citizen voices were ignored in the Granada Pointe tree massacre. The vote was delayed vote on the Plantation Oaks re-zoning. We need change to take Ormond back.

David Romeo: Ormond Beach, 66th on the list of Best Places to Live in America in 2005, no longer makes the top 4,000.

Teacher doesn’t need to apologize Dear Editor: In regards to the “Backpack Apology Sought” article in the Oct. 8 Ormond Beach Observer: Kudos to the gym teacher for doing what was right. No apologies are needed unless it is from the mother of the student trying to start controversy. Anyone questioning “all lives matter” in any form, whether it be verbal or written, truly has to be racist. I can’t imagine what would happen if a student came in with a back pack saying “white or yellow lives matter!”

The truth is that all lives do matter and most people do not look at the world in black, white or yellow. You are what you are, and very good people are on all sides. There are only a few who want to keep the controversy going.

The sad thing is that the education system seems to like the controversy and is promoting it. It has to end in the school systems and at home.

Please ... Let’s everyone get along, and the world will be a much better place.

UNDERDRESSED BURGLAR 7:06 a.m. — 100 block of North Yonge Street Unarmed burglary. While responding to call about a burglary in a local restaurant, police were given a heads up that there was a suspicious person nearby. The reporting officer went to investigate and found an empty car. After a few minutes, a 51-year-old Palm Coast man, clad in only an undershirt and underwear, appeared and asked the officer to jump the battery on his car, according to the police report.

Another officer found a pair of shorts across the street and asked the man if they were his.

The man said they weren’t, but put them on anyway. He told police he had been hanging out with a woman and his car ended up breaking down at that location.

Inside the burglarized restaurant, police discovered tables had been moved and smeared with ketchup. There was also ketchup on the floor and several ceramic table settings were destroyed.

Police also found a T-shirt containing a logo with the man’s place of employment at the restaurant, as well as a pair of flip flops, which officers believed could fit the man’s feet, but he refused to try them on.

He was taken to jail.

Civil service. What happens if a valet accidentally gives your car to someone else?

That’s what one 61-year-old Daytona Beach woman found out when it happened to her at a local restaurant. She and another restaurant patron owned the same model vehicle and were at the restaurant at the same time.

The patron drove off with the woman’s car without noticing it wasn’t hers, according to the police report.

The valet service arranged a ride home for the woman. Later that morning, the patron responded to the police and drove back to the restaurant to pick up her own car and drop off the other woman’s car.

A PIRATE’S LIFE FOR ME 1:30 p.m. — 1400 block of West Granada Boulevard Drunk person. A 60-year-old Ormond Beach man told police repeatedly that he was a “pirate” as he laid on top of a bicycle near a local grocery store.

The reporting officer noted that he looked like he had just fallen, but that the man said he was “relaxing and did not fall,” according to the police report.

He told police he had previously drink a fifth of rum two or three hours ago.

Because the man had no one to pick him up, he was taken to a local hospital.

Patrick Thornton, of Ormond Beach, was one of 10 CBS audio engineers who won an Emmy for their work during the 2019 Masters tournament.

O

rmond Beach resident Patrick Thornton is responsible for everything spectators hear in their living rooms when watching sports on TV. The crowd noise. The announcers. The music.

Thornton, an audio engineer for CBS, mixes all of that together from a semi-truck audio studio off the field, all the while handling communications from camera operators, directors and producers. He knows what wire belongs to what microphone, and while it can get hectic due to the multitasking, Thornton loves his job.

“I always joke and say that audio is like the central nervous system, because everything comes through audio, one way or another,” Thornton said.

On Aug. 11, the winners were announced for the 41st-annual Sports Emmy awards, and Thornton was one of 10 audio engineers recognized with the award for their work during the 2019 Masters Tournament. The Emmy for “Outstanding Technical Team Remote” is not Thornton’s first. He’s been nominated nine times since 2008, and won an Emmy as part of a larger group within CBS in the 1990s.

But, it is the first Emmy he’s won specifically for the job he performs during games, and that, Thornton said, is what makes it so satisfying.

“It’s a technical achievement award for what we do on that golf course,” Thornton said. “It’s almost magic. What you see here at home, it takes an awful lot to get there.”

SOUND BEGINNINGS

Thornton began his career in 1983 with Turner Broadcasting. He worked in shipping and receiving at the time, allowing him to meet just about everyone in the company, including founder Ted Turner. Within six months, Thornton decided that the best place to be in the company was the remote TV truck.

Not many want to get into audio engineering because of the amount of work involved, Thornton said, but as someone who loved both sports and music, it was a “no brainer” for him.

Around 1985, he started working in the industry. In the mornings, he went to college for his electrical engineering technology degree. In the afternoon, he worked games.

He’s now dedicated 35 years to audio engineering.

For the last seven years, Thornton has lived in Ormond Beach.

Charles Rembaum, a friend of Thornton, said when he found out Thornton had won an Emmy, he was shocked. He joked that he couldn’t believe it until he saw the award. He wanted Thornton to be recognized because it’s not every day a local wins an Emmy.

“To me, that’s very, very impressive, especially in a small town,” Rembaum said.

A TECHNICAL FEAT

The Masters poses an added technical challenge for all the audio engineers working the famous golf tournament, Thornton said. Sounds from the field come via telephone lines, an old school method, and engineers like Thornton need convert the sig-

nals into a digital format before transferring them to one of four trucks for mixing.

Working the Masters is an entire operation that takes about 400 crew members and 10 days to set up prior to the tournament, including camera operators and other staff, Thornton said.

The bigger the games, the more stress that is involved, he added.

It’s why for him, the games that are most fun to work are college basketball and college football.

There’s something about covering a University of Tennessee football game and hearing 100,000 people sing “Rocky Top,” Thornton said.

“That’s the kind of stuff that’s really fun about it,” he said. “You have an opportunity to be in places no one gets to be, or people would pay to be there and I’m getting paid to be there.

“I always joke and say that audio is like the central nervous system, because everything comes through audio, one way or another.”

MASONIC LODGE’S HIGHLAND GAMES The Ormond Beach Backyard Highland Games were held at the Ormond Beach Masonic Lodge on Sept. 26, benefiting the Lodge’s “Adopt a Teacher” program.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many Celtic and Highland games had to be canceled around the state. According to an email, Damon Sansom, master of the Ormond Beach Masonic Lodge and Highland Games athlete, got together with other athletes from around the state and thus, the idea of the Ormond Beach Backyard Highland Games was born.

The games included the

caber toss, hammer throw and stone throw. There were official Highland judges on hand and three world records were recorded, according to the email.

The Lodge’s “Adopt a Teacher” program gives one or more local elementary teachers financial help to supplement budget shortfalls in the classroom. The next event is planned for Dec. 12.

Audubon Florida, the state branch of the National Audubon Society, will hold its annual assembly via Zoom this year due to the pandemic.

Registration isn’t limited and the branch is able to offer an “Introduction to Audubon” session for free, according to an announcement. Subsequent workshops on Oct. 21 through Oct. 24, are available for $25.

The officers arrived in time to rescue the distressed resident and save their life.

Daytona-area condo sales are up 63%, as prices fall 3% Despite statewide shutdowns caused by the pandemic, year-to-date sales totals for 2020 are up.

Condo sales around the Daytona Beach ramped even higher in September, as prices fell.

An analysis of Daytona Beach Multiple Listing Service data by Wyse Home Team Realty showed that 201 condo units were sold around the Daytona Beach area in September with a median sales price of $227,850. That’s a few more sales than in August and it’s a marked 63% higher than last year’s sales condo sales. Sales volume also was up in both monthly and annual comparisons.

Meanwhile, MLS reports show the median condo sales price was more than 8.5% lower than in August and down 2.8% compared to September 2019. This, even as inventory of available condos remained extremely limited with only 816 condo units active during the month of September. MLS reports indicate that number is down 15% from September 2019.

Despite statewide shutdowns caused by the pandemic, yearto-date sales totals for 2020 are up, according to MLS data. All told, the number of condo sales completed during the first nine months of 2020 were 10% higher than same period of 2019. The median sales price was up 9.5% in year to date comparisons.

ber, but we did see a softening in the median sales price,” said Ron Wysocarski, Broker and CEO of Wyse Home Team Realty in Port Orange.

Daytona Beach MLS data for Condo and Condotel Sales combined:  September 2020: 201 condo/ condotels sold with a median sales price of $227,850.  September 2019: 123 condo/ condotels sold with a median sales price of $234,500.  August 2020: 198 condo/condotels sold with a median sales price of $249,500.  August 2019: 150 condo/condotels sold with a median sales price of $216,300.

 July 2020: 190 condo/condotels sold with a median sales price of $241,250.  Total Volume Sold in September 2020: $52,887,130.  Total Volume Sold in September 2019: $29,136,350.  Total Volume Sold in August 2020: $52,001,615.  Year To Date 2020: 1294 condo/condotels sold with a median sales price of $225,000.  Year To Date 2019: 1170 condo/ condotels sold with a median sales price of $205,450.

“Despite the dip in the median condo sales price overall, vacation condo sales prices around Daytona Beach remained strong in September,” Wysocarski said.
