Comission split on Biketoberfest permits

Will the city of Ormond Beach issue special event permits for Biketoberfest?

That decision remains to be determined, as the City Commission voted 3-2 to continue its Aug. 18 discussion on the matter until its next meeting on Wednesday, Sept.

The city hasn’t issued a special event permit since March 16 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and city staff recommended this continue until the end of the year or until the governor moves forward with phase 3 of the state’s reopening plan.

However, as the 14-day positivity for COVID-19 is trending downward, some commissioners felt the city should issue permits for itinerant vending during Biketoberfest. City Commissioner Dwight Selby, who along with Commissioner Rob Littleton voted against postponing a decision until September, said he was concerned about the negative financial impacts on local businesses if permits aren’t issued. Their decision will likely not impact the attendance of Biketoberfest, he said, but it could impact

City seeks COVID-19 relief The commission approved submitting a list of pandemicrelated expenditures to the county for reimbursement under the Volusia’s CARES Acts municipal subrecipient program, which the county has designated up to $15 million for distribution.

Ormond’s share maxes out at just over $1.5 million, and the list of items to be purchased, dependent on county approval, include webcams for virtual meetings, hands-free soap dispensers and ultraviolet room sterilizers.

ealth care workers at AdventHealth Daytona Beach got a special salute by the Daytona International Speedway as NASCAR and Verizon held a hauler parade and lunch on Thursday, Aug. 13.

Led by DIS President Chip Wile in the Speedway’s Official Pace Car, the “NASCAR Hauler Salute to Health Care Heroes” featured more than 10 NASCAR industry haulers, according to a press release. These haulers travel to racetracks across the U.S., providing supplies and resources for the sport. As the haulers drove by the hospital and honked their horns, health care workers waved in the rain.

“Throughout this pandemic, AdventHealth’s response and heroic efforts have been nothing short of amazing,” said Wile, according to the press release.

“With our partners at Verizon, we’re proud to recognize those efforts and salute the heroes who go above and beyond caring for the wellness of our community.”

That weekend, for the first time, NASCAR’s top-tier series competed at the Daytona Road Course.

The event’s catered lunch for more than 750 AdventHealth Daytona Beach employees was from 4 Rivers Smokehouse Daytona and Jersey Mike’s.

Deborah “Deb” Denys and Jeff Brower will face each other again in November as the County Council Chair race heads to a runoff.

Denys had resigned her County Council District 3 seat in order to run for the position of chair.

Brower took the most votes in the three-way nonpartisan primary, winning 44.84% of the vote to Denys’ 40.23%. The third candidate in the race, Gerard Witman, earned 14.93% and will not advance to the general election.

Races with more than two candidates head to a runoff when no candidate earns greater than 50% of the vote. The top two voteearners will compete in November.

In the County Council District 3 race, Danny Robins won with 55.53% of the vote, while Gary Conroy earned 35.35% and Johan “John” D’Hont earned 9.12%.

The three-way nonpartisan School Board race for the District 2 seat will also proceed to a runoff, as candidate Anita Burnette earned 48.23% of the vote, incumbent Ida Wright earned 38.97 and Andre Grant earned 12.8%.

Will Roberts won the race for tax collector, beating David Santiago 59.97% to 40.03%.

The office of tax collector is a new one in Volusia County: It was necessitated by the passage of Florida constitutional Amendment 10 in 2018.

Judicial Circuit Public Defender, Matt Metz won with 38.42% of the vote, while Anne Marie Gennusa earned 32.54% and George Burden earned 29.05%. Because all three candidates are Republicans, there is no runoff.

In the Circuit 7 circuit judge races, Mike Orfinger beat challenger Anna Handy by 55.52% to 44.48% for the Group 6 seat, while Alicia Washington beat Bryan Rendzio 52.18% to 47.82% for the Group 27 seat. The Group 14 race will head to a runoff between Dan Hilbert, who earned 36.91% of the vote, and Joan Anthony, who earned 33.66%. The third candidate in that race, MaryEllen Osterndorf, had earned 29.44%.

Chris Miller beat Nora Hall 58.27% to 41.73% in the 7th Circuit Group 6 county judge race.

A state appeals court on Monday, Aug. 17, rejected a challenge by Volusia County to a 2018 constitutional amendment that addressed county offices of sheriff, tax collector, property appraiser, supervisor of elections and clerk of circuit court. The voter-approved amendment, in part, prevents counties from abolishing the offices and requires that the offices be elected.

Volusia County for decades has operated under a charter that established county departments whose leaders performed the jobs, according to the ruling by a three-judge panel of the 1st District Court of Appeal. The sheriff, property appraiser, supervisor of elections and clerk of circuit court have been elected, but the tax collector has been appointed.

The county filed a lawsuit after the 2018 constitutional amendment passed, arguing, in part, that the changes should not apply to its already-existing structure.

But a Leon County circuit judge ruled against Volusia County last year, and the appeals court agreed that the changes were not improperly retroactive.

“This amendment is not ‘retroactive’ in the sense of reaching back in time to invalidate what

went before or to attach new legal consequences to actions already completed,” said the opinion, written by Judge Susan Kelsey and joined fully by Chief Judge Stephanie Ray and partly by Judge Scott Makar. “This amendment effected a prospective change, giving the county a deadline of Jan. 5, 2021 to comply, expressly beginning ‘with respect to the qualifying for and the holding of the primary and general elections for county constitutional officers in 2020.’ The amendment required the county only to alter its future structure for county constitutional offices, which makes the amendment prospective and not retroactive.

The amendment attaches no new legal consequences to the county’s 1970 charter amendments or its past actions or operations consistent with those provisions.”

Volusia’s COVID-19 positivity rate is trending down The rate has stayed under 7% since Aug. 12.

Volusia County’s 14-day COVID-19 positivity rate is dropping.

During a COVID-19 briefing on Friday, Aug. 14, Patricia Boswell, Florida Department of Health county administrator, said the positivity rate is now at 6.97%, down from 7.4% last Friday.

“We’re moving in the right direction — down,” Boswell said.

“But the numbers are still much higher than we’d like to see and much higher than they were, let’s say mid-June, when the 14-day positivity rate on June 15 was 2.3%.”

FDOH reported 8,608 cumulative cases of coronavirus in Volusia County, an increase of 67 from Tuesday, Aug. 18. State data shows hospitalizations amount to 8% of all cases, and the 171 deaths total 2% of all cases.

‘New world, new skills’ CareerSource Flagler Volusia CEO says digitizing is key to building back the economy JARLEENE ALMENAS ASSOCIATE EDITOR

As of the end of July, about 53,000 people in Volusia County have filed for unemployment this year, with over 1,000 more filing weekly, said Robin King, president and CEO of CareerSource Flagler Volusia during a Zoom into Eggs and Issues virtual event on Thursday, Aug. 13.

“This number is important to me because a percentage of them will become the new talent pipeline,” King said.

The pandemic’s impact on the workforce was one of the topics targeted during the Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce morning event. While King said it’s too early to talk about potential consequences of the changes to the workforce as situations remain fluid due to the coronavirus, she said it is clear there has been a great impact to the global economy.

And with that have come big changes in the workplace, with employers and employees needing to adapt quickly to new working conditions — specifically an enhanced focus on remote work and the need to digitize companies — as well as developing new working behaviors.

“I was speaking to a local financial adviser last week who

used the words, ‘tossed out of the office to work from home,”’ King said.

Every industry has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the hospitality and food service industries taking the hardest hits. On the other side of the spectrum, manufacturing, construction and educational services have been the least hit industries during the ongoing health crisis.

In addition, King said some industries are booming. She cited a Florida Trend article that reported the cyber security industry continues to hire employees, and that communication platforms are emerging during the pandemic.

Take Zoom, for example, the very medium through which the Eggs and Issues event was held.

When speaking about trends in the workforce during the pandemic, King cited statistics from an April Gallup poll, which states the percentage of employers who offered a flexible work schedule or remote work options grew from 39% in midMarch to 57% by the end of that month and early April.

The poll also states that 62% of Americans worked from home during that time, and, that three in five workers would prefer to

continue working remotely as much as possible once health restrictions were lifted.

“Those who say that all their staff are going to be coming back within the next year might have to take a look at how they’re going to attract the future workforce,” King said.

The overarching theme, King said, of the current needs of the workplace is, “New world, new skills.” With the rapid ongoing changes, hiring professionals will need to seek remote workers with self-motivation, independence and adaptability.

“All those were important skills before — they become critical,” she said.

While digitizing businesses is the first key to building back the economy, King said the second key is investing in the wellbeing and needs of the workforce.

“That is the key to our economic recovery,” King said.

The event also featured School Board Member Linda Cuthbert and Interim Volusia County Schools Superintendent Dr. Carmen Balgobin, who gave an overview on school reopening measures.

POLLING RESULTS A poll conducted during the event, which was virtually attended by about 30 people, found that: n 86% said some of their employees were working remoting at this time, as compared to 14% who said all employees were working remotely. n 50% said employees were scheduled to return to the office in the next month, and conversely, 50% said employees would return in the next six to 12 months. n 88% considered themselves to be a “safe employer” during the pandemic; 13% said they were unsure.

With schools reopening on Aug. 31 in Volusia County, and Aug. 24 in Flagler County, AdventHealth doctors said the best way to dampen what could become a third wave of COVID-19 infections is by continuing to take precautions.

During a morning briefing on Thursday, Aug. 13, Michael Keating, chief medical officer at AdventHealth for Children, said that the community let down its guard after the first wave and “paid the price” for it. Not following the guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control, both

in and out of the classroom, could place students, faculty members and their family at risk.

Taking precautions, such as wearing masks, social distancing and frequent hand washing, shouldn’t fall only in the hands of students and their families, he added. Teachers should also be making sure they’re setting an example, and Keating said children attending brick-andmortar schools should speak up if they notice their teachers are not following CDC guidelines.

“Do the right things all the time,” Keating said. “It should become a way of life right now.”

Dr. Angela Fals, medical director of the weight and wellness program at AdventHealth for Children, said the community has had to adapt quickly to all the changes implemented due to the coronavirus, and that continuing to be flexible is important.

Censys Technologies, of Daytona Beach, announced in a press release that it closed on $2 million of seed funding, an investment led by venture capital firm Kirenarage Partners that “will provide growth capital to serve more enterprise customers, unmanned aerial systems service providers and government organizations with innovations in remote sensing solutions.”

The investment comes at a time when the drone marketplace is accelerating, the press release states. Censys Technologies, which employs many Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University graduates, is an integrated drone solutions company.

In the last year, Censys has gathered a $60 million sales pipeline, won a $250,000 aerospace technology grant from Space Florida, and took second place at the Florida Venture Forum Aerospace Capital Conference.

ANNIVERSARY QUILT ON TOUR Ormond Beach resident Claire Sadowniczak, whose quilt celebrating the 100th anniversary of the women’s suffrage movement was chosen to tour the U.S. with other quilts in honor of the milestone, was recently made aware that her quilt will be displayed in the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky.

The exhibition will be on display from Sept. 1 through Oct. 16, and will be filmed as part of the museum’s “Walk through tours,” and will be available to view online. The quilts will then be displayed at the Winona, Minnesota in November.

LETTERS Glass shouldn’t be in a landfill Dear Editor: The city of Ormond Beach recently stopped accepting glass as recyclable. This bothers me greatly. For over 26 years, I have been paying for recycling, and that included glass containers.

Then I find that not only will glass no longer be accepted, but all along it was not being recycled but sent to the dump.

I would also like to review the contract with the recycler and see if the contract allows them to stop accepting glass. Some communities still accept glass.

Why is that the case if there is no market for the recycled glass? I suspect that the recyclers want to only recycle products that make a larger profit for them, but I think they should take the less profitable products as part of the contract.

I have no experience with the recycling industry, and I don’t think we should consider sending our waste to other countries like China to deal with. The manufacturers should bear the cost of recycling or charge a deposit like many communities still require. I remember when I was a kid, we did many fundraisers by collecting discarded drink bottles along roadsides and returning for deposit to be washed and reused.

I think we could look at other uses for used glass containers like reuse at home, crush for landscape material, grind into concrete pavement or use to replenish eroded beaches. There are beaches where discarded glass has been placed that have become tourist attractions for their unique beauty. It is very easy to sterilize and reuse for food storage containers and is safer to use than plastic.

Let’s put together a team of concerned people, engineers, scientist and entrepreneurs to come up with creative ways to recycle and reuse glass so we can continue to use it cost effectively and safely into the future and to help the environment.

BRIEFS Man arrested after hitting protestor A 62-year-old Belleview man involved in a counterprotest across the Granada Bridge was arrested by Ormond Beach Police on Wednesday, Aug. 12, after he struck a Black Lives Matter protestor.

James Casselman was counterprotesting with a group of mainly supporters of President Donald Trump, his arrest report states.

OBPD Public Information Officer Keith Walker said a small group has been protesting on the bridge for the last couple of months without incidents, but that on this day, about 100 people, both local and not, showed up for both protests in total.

The protests started at 5 p.m., and later in the evening, many of the counterprotestors left. Walker said the BLM group then crossed the street. At the time, around 7:14 p.m., there were only a handful of counterprotestors left, including Casselman, who got into a verbal altercation with the victim. Casselman was holding a yellow flower close to the victim’s face. The victim swatted the flower, and Casselman slapped him.

Casselman told police he got hit with the victim’s megaphone first, but police determined this to be false. Walker said before Casselman’s arrest, a 17-year-old with the BLM group argued with the counterprotestors. She spit on one, but the person didn’t press charges. Cassselman was taken to jail for simple battery.

A vision for growth west of I-95?

Should there be a committee tasked with creating a vision for the west side of Ormond Beach?

At least one Planning Board member thinks so. During her comments at the end of the Planning Board meeting on Thursday, Aug. 13, member Angeline Schull said that, with the growth happening west of I-95, she would like to see a group tackle that corridor and create plans and objectives to guide development, similar to what Ormond MainStreet does with the downtown.

“I don’t know how MainStreet got started, but it would be nice to have a group that focused on that area,” Schull said. “That’s where we’re growing.”

Planning Director Steven Spraker said someone would have to “champion” that initiative, and explained that the goals, policies and objectives for development in that corridor are already in the city’s comprehensive plan, which was updated after the OB Life community meetings in 2018.

Spraker also said there has been “relatively little growth” in Ormond west of

I-95 since 2010. The parcel for the proposed Tymber Creek Aparments project is one of the last, accounting for about 30 of the approximate 40 acres still available for development. The land north of Hunter’s Ridge is unincorporated Volusia County, and to the south is the city of Daytona Beach. Avalon Park Daytona, he pointed out, is a whole different ballpark.

“Your guiding document, like the MainStreet guiding document, is your comprehensive plan and your land development code, which already establishes what they can and can’t do,” Spraker said.

Staff, however, would be happy to work with any group interested in undertaking a vision for that corridor, he said.

In that same vein, Planning Board member Harold Briley asked if there was a possibility to establish a community redevelopment area in the southern portion of U.S. 1, also known as South Yonge Street, in Ormond Beach.

Spraker responded that the city conducted a blight study in that area about four to five years ago, and that the chances the county could issue a CRA are low. A new CRA today needs project-specific improvements, he said, similar to what went on at Ormond Crossings.

residential and commercial, and Spraker said it would be difficult not to encroach into residential areas, something city staff has no desire to do.

“So you’re kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place,” he said.

Planning Board member G.G. Galloway said a group conducted a study on U.S. 1 from Edgewater to Destination Daytona, and the findings suggested there is more blight along that highway in comparison to the beachside.

He suggested that Spraker bring up the discussion to other city planners.

“We seem to forget that U.S. 1 was our interstate in the ’20s, ’30s, ’40s, and ’50s, and it’s really bygone,” Galloway said.

“Until the cities and the county get together and do something, it’s going to be like that for a long time.”

CHARGED FOR CHARGING 1:36 a.m. — 600 block of South Atlantic Avenue Loitering or prowling. Police arrested a 30-year-old man who was charging his phone at an outside electrical outlet belonging to a closed business.

The reporting officer noticed the man laying on the side of the building, concealed in the dark. The officer asked what he was doing, and according to the report, the man replied “very sarcastically, ‘You can see I have my phone plugged in here.’” The officer told the man what he was doing could be considered theft.

The man became agitated and started gathering his things. He declined to provide any identification and eventually gave police a fake name. He was taken to jail.

CHICKEN WING RAGE 12:30 p.m. — 200 block of West Granada Boulevard Battery touch/strike. A 60-yearold Daytona Beach man was arrested after he threw chicken wings at a fast food employee while in the establishment’s drive-thru and issued threats to hurt him. Police report that the man got angrier when the employee shut the drive-thru window and refused to give the man a refund for the chicken wings.

The employee told police that around noon, he received a phone call from a man asking if they had chicken wings. The man put in an order, and, when the man arrived in the drive-thru, he

paid and received his order.

The report states that the man then returned to the drive-thru speaker box and started yelling.

The employee asked him to pull up to the window so he could speak to the manager, which was when the man began hurling his meal at the employee. Afterward, the man tried to enter the dining room, but it was locked due to COVID-19.

About 15 minutes, later the man called again and threatened to shoot him and shoot all the black employees, the report states. The employee called police, and soon after the reporting officer arrived, the man called again and threatened to put “bullets in the heads.” The man was eventually apprehended outside his home, and denied any involvement in the incident.

He was taken to jail.

SPITTING IN ANGER 3:56 p.m. — 300 block of West Granada Boulevard Battery. Police arrested a 40-year-old man who spit on a woman during a verbal altercation inside a local grocery store.

According to his arrest report, a store employee called police after she saw the man swing a shopping cart at a woman and a toddler and spit in their direction. The woman told police that, while shopping for cupcakes with her daughter, the man began yelling at her, using derogatory racial language, despite her being white. During the altercation, he spit on her, and it landed on her hand.

The man left the store and was apprehended in a nearby gas station.

He was taken to jail.

C

arl Forster spends his working hours driving on A1A. For about the last six years, Forster, of Ormond Beach, has had the chance to transport locals and tourists along Votran route 1, which goes from the transfer plaza at Daytona Beach to Silver Beach Avenue, and all the way up to Bass Drive in Ormond-by-the-Sea. He believes it’s the best route of all; he gets to see the ocean every day.

Because of his route, Forster is known to some as A1A Carl, a nickname he laughs off in good humor.

“I just enjoy driving,” Forster said. “I enjoy helping people. It’s just a great job.”

Forster is one of 20 drivers with Volusia County’s public transit sytem who earned a safe driving award this year by the National Safety Council, a nonprofit safety advocate organization. According to a recent county press release, the criteria includes a minimum of 15 years or 250,000 consecutive miles driven without a preventable collision. The recognition of these bus drivers “was even more impressive given the additional considerations and responsibilities of serving the riding public in the age of COVID-19,” the press release states.

“Having this many award recipients is indicative of how many excellent employees we have,” said Elizabeth Suchsland, Votran’s assistant general manager of operations and mainte-

nance, in the press release. “Even with all that’s going on, our drivers are out there providing not only a safer health environment, but also a safe physical experience riding public transit with Votran.

These awards were extremely well-deserved.”

SAFETY FIRST

For Forster, safety is the most important thing to keep in mind as a Votran driver. It’s ingrained in their training, he said.

Like many, one of his pet peeves is seeing people texting and driving on the road. He sees it constantly.

“You really have to be careful, because people are just driving everywhere — in front of you, around you, in your lanes,” Forster said. “It can be scary sometimes, but I try to make the best of it and constantly be alert. You have to be on your toes at all times.”

Regarding safety during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Forster said all drivers are wearing masks, buses are being sanitized often, and passengers are practicing social distanc-

ing. Everything so far has run smoothly, he said.

DECADES OF DRIVING

Forster has lived in Ormond since 1988. He never saw himself driving a bus for a living, and got started after he saw an ad in the newspaper that Votran was hiring. That was 26 years ago.

Over the years, he’s had the chance to meet new people and hear their stories. He also has plenty of regulars, some of whom fall asleep on the bus from time to time. When that happens, Forster makes sure to wake them up at their stop.

And when he’s not working, Forster likes to exercise, garden and spend time with his wife of 30 years, Andrea, whom he’s known since he was 13 years old.

Forster is the only Ormond Beach resident among the 20 drivers who earned the National Safety Council award. The recognition was an honor.

“It felt good, you know, to accomplish something over the years,” Forster said. “You appreciate it.”

Some of them started playing together at 10 years old, losing most of their games. But they stuck together and ended up winning five state championships in travel softball tournaments, playing together for about a decade as the Lady Renegades.

The greatest mark of success, though, in coach Kent Zweifel’s mind, is that just about every player who wanted to play at the next level is now playing or committed to a college team, representing Ormond Beach on softball diamonds all around the United States.

“You have to work hard,” Zweifel said, “but it was still about having fun, and that’s what made our team stay together. You can play this game and get burned out if it’s not fun.”

The team learned it was elite when it finished third place in the nation in the 12u Babe Ruth World Series. Even then, though, Zweifel knew his players weren’t winning with pure athleticism but by playing together as a team.

“These girls played for each other,” he said. “It was a family.”

Among the players on the team was Zweifel’s daughter, Shea.

Before that, Shea Zweifel said, “I couldn’t tell if it was inside, middle, outside. I just saw a yellow ball, and I swung for it.”

Now, Shea Zweifel bats fifth and is a catcher-outfielder for her junior college team, University of South Carolina-Salk.

“It’s definitely a boost of confidence,” she said, referring to the feeling she had when she first got contacts. “You feel like you can hit, you can play on the team, you’re just as good as everybody else.”

Shea Zweifel also recalled that her father was supportive of all the players on the team. She remembered that he would stick up for them and argue for better calls from umpires, occasionally getting thrown out of the games.

“We always wanted to play harder for him and make sure he knew we respected him and appreciated him for fighting for us,” she said.

Another player who appreciated Coach Zweifel’s enthusiasm and leadership is Randa Motsinger, who is now a first baseman at Division-I North Carolina Central University.

“Coach seems like a dad,” she said. “I had two knee surgeries in my career, and I remember being in the emergency room, and I called him first — before I called my dad,” she added with a laugh.

“He really cared. He would do anything for you. He’s the reason that we’re all where we’re at.”

Florida’s housing market reflected the impact of coronavirus pandemic and economic turmoil in the second quarter of 2020, particularly during April and May: higher median prices and more pending inventory, but fewer closed sales and fewer new listings compared to 2Q 2019, according to the latest housing data from Florida Realtors.

Closed sales of single-family homes statewide totaled 68,675 in 2Q 2020, down 19.2% from the 2Q 2019 level; closed sales of condo-townhouse properties totaled 22,571, down 33.9% compared to 2Q 2019. Closed sales typically occur 30 to 90 days after sales contracts are written.

Quarterly data figures normally offer a good look into prevailing economic and market trends, according to Florida Realtors Chief Economist Dr. Brad O’Connor. “This year, however, has been a notable exception, with the state of the housing market shifting rapidly from week to week,” he said.

O’Connor added: “For example, we were only down a little over 4% year-over-year in new pending sales of single-family homes during the second quarter, but this masks the fact that we were down 35% (new pending single-family home sales) in April, only to see a phenomenal

bounce-back recovery of 2.3% in May and over 23% in June.

“All indications are that Florida will continue to see home sales surge through the end of the summer, with our biggest near-term issue being a severe lack of singlefamily inventory.”

The statewide median sales price for single-family existing homes in 2Q 2020 was $277,500, up 4.7% from the same time a year ago, according to data from Florida Realtors Research department in partnership with local Realtor boards/associations. The statewide median price for condotownhouse properties during the quarter was $207,000, up 6.2% over the year-ago figure. The median is the midpoint; half the homes sold for more, half for less.

According to Freddie Mac, the interest rate for a 30-year fixedrate mortgage averaged 3.23% for 2Q 2020, down from the 4.0% average recorded during the same quarter a year earlier.

Anne Merriman grew up watching “Wheel of Fortune,” and this year, she got the chance to spin the wheel on TV herself.

Merriman, a Holly Hill resident and Realtor with Adams Cameron and Co., appeared on an episode of the game show on Aug. 7, where she placed third and took home $4,500.

The show taped back in February, though she’d been waiting to be called in for about a year. It all started when the “Wheelmobile” came to Cape Coral in 2018, where Merriman had been living at the time. She recalls that there were about 10,000 people there for every day of the audition event.

Merriman was called to audition on the second day, and then about a month later, received a letter calling her back for a second audition.

Another month passed, and Merriman received another letter telling her she had made the show, and would be called to Los Angeles anytime in the next 18 months.

That phone call came the day before Valentine’s Day this year, and Merriman was told she had two weeks to arrive in LA. “Then we had to plan a family

vacation in two weeks,” Merriman said. “It was great.”

She and her family took in the sights, stayed on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, and Merriman got to see the handprints of two of her favorite actors: John Wayne and Marilyn Monroe.

When it came time to tape her show, Merriman said the nerves hit the minute she hit the stage.

She describes herself as very outgoing, and not shy at all.

That changed when the cameras started rolling. Merriman said her daughter teases her about it, saying she was surprised her mom didn’t end up calling out a number rather than a letter during the game. Merriman said she was just hoping she didn’t throw up on national TV. “I definitely realized that I am not meant to be on TV,” she said laughing. “I’ll stick with real estate.”

All in all, Merriman said it was a fun experience. She also got to meet Vanna White, the hostess of “Wheel of Fortune.” She came backstage to greet the contestants before the show. And though she didn’t win on TV, she still beats her family when they play “Wheel of Fortune” on the PlayStation.

Merriman never thought she’d get the chance on the show, but when the opportunity presented itself, she knew she had to try.

“Even if you think it’s impossible, go for it,” Merriman said.
