The next phase of Ormond Beach’s parks and recreation master plan update has begun, and the city is asking residents to provide more feedback via an online survey.

The third phase of visioning entitles collecting citizen responses from ideas that emerged from the 1,100 survey responses Barth Associates, the consultant, collected in the second phase

of the update process.

The survey includes images of which type of natural areas residents would enjoy more, the type of adult fitness and wellness programs they would like to see more of, as well as which city parks are in the most need of public wi-fi access.

The next public meeting for the master plan update is scheduled to take place next

month at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the South Ormond Neighborhood Center, located at 176 Division Ave. The current parks and recreation master plan is 15 years old.

Local anti-litter campaign Dream Green Volusia has announced the creation of “Keep Volusia Clean,” a campaign that aims to garner public support for the county and cities applying anti-litter solutions and promotions.

According to a press release, the organization will host presentations across Volusia County showcasing proactive examples and ways to pay for solutions to littering.

Additionally, the organization recently received a $3,300 grant from Surfing’s Evolution and Preservation Foundation. The funds went toward the installation of a watergoat, a marine debris collection device, in the canal behind Sica Hall in Holly Hill.

Planning Board to meet next week The Ormond Beach Planning Board will meet on Thursday, Aug. 12, and they will discuss four different items.

They are: a land development code amendment for virtual golf centers; a special exception to allow outdoor display and sales at Southern Mower Sales at 148 N. Yonge St.; a land development code amendment for off-road recreational vehicle courses; and a land development code to allow food trucks to operate in residential community centers.

Volusia County Schools held a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, Aug. 2, to celebrate the beginning of construction for the new Beachside Elementary School at 1265 N. Grandview Ave. in Daytona Beach, the former Ortona Elementary school site. The new school is a result of the consolidation of Osceola Elementary with Ortona, a decision made by the School Board in August 2020.

According to a VCS press release, the new Beachside Elementary School will serve up to 765 students in a campus that will span 95,000 square feet, and will include a two-story classroom building, two playgrounds and an outdoor learning space, as designed by BRPH. Construction will be done by Ajax Construction, with an opening scheduled for late 2022.

“This ceremony marks the beginning of our journey to a beautiful new school facility and campus for our children of Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach,” said Lynn Bruner, the former Osceola Elementary principal who will be Beachside Elementary’s principal. “We’re excited to have a modern educational environment designed for today’s learning, with upgraded technology and security.”

“We can’t be more proud to have that responsibility and that enjoyment, because every neighborhood deserves a really good school,” she said.

Leek, who, along with his wife, grew up and currently resides in Ormond Beach, looked back fondly at his own education by VCS. “The greatest thing about any school is that it has the opportunity to be the centerpiece of a community,” Leek said. “That’s what you’re building here.”

VCS Superintendent Scott Fritz said that when the consolidation of Ortona and Osceola began, he met with both principals to ensure a seamless transition for the students. Until the new school is built, all students will attend classes at Osceola Elementary.

“We just know great things are going to happen,” Fritz said.

“What’s so cool is you only get one time to have a first day, but that first day is going to be here for years. This is the first group of Sea Turtles that we’re going to have, and these Sea Turtles are going to be telling that story for years.”

The creation of Beachside Elementary is a product of a vision that shows local students matter, said Henry. The mayor added that education is a bridge.

“There’s no bridge quite like it,” Henry said. “It has the capacity to bridge communities, and in this case, literally, to bridge two cities. It has the capacity to connect families to their dreams and to their hopes, to their aspirations.”

With the 2021 Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday having begun Saturday, July 31, prompting parents to take care of their students’ shopping needs, here is what you need to know about Volusia County Schools’ new dress code.

After a unanimous vote on Tuesday, July 27, by the School Board, uniforms are no longer required to be worn by students.

VCS had established a uniform dress code in 2016 by way of a 4-1 vote, with only current Board Chair Linda Cuthbert voting against. She’s the only board member who voted in 2016 who remains in office.

Cuthbert said she had always been against uniforms because of the enforcement issues they involved. That’s why she said she insisted on streamlining the district’s new policy.

“If it’s easier to enforce, it’s easier for our kids to follow,” Cuthbert said. “It’s easier on the referral list. We just want everything covered so the attention is on the textbook and the teacher and the learning, and not in “what do you have on?’”

Based on the district’s new updated policy 217, here is an overview of what your student can and cannot wear: Allowed: n Upper garments that are long enough to clearly overlap the belt line or stay tucked in during normal movement. n Pants, shorts or skirts that reach at least the mid-thigh.

Waistband must be worn and secured between the hips and the waist, covering all undergarments. For children in sixth grade and above, if a pant has visible belt loops, it must be worn with a belt. Pants cannot have tears. n Shoes that “are safe and appropriate for the learning environment.” No flip flops, and students have to wear athletic shoes in all PE classes. n Coats, jacket, sweaters and other outer garments when necessary due to weather. If the jacket or coat has a good, the student can’t have it on while inside. They can’t be “overly baggy.”

Not allowed: n Hats, caps, visors, hoods, bandanas, sunglasses or other head gear, unless a student receives administrative permission due to a medical or religious necessity, or an exception made for a school-related event. n Clothing, jewelry, haircuts, tattoos, buttons or other attire that is offensive, suggestive, disruptive or indecent. n Clothing that exposes the torso or upper thighs.

Currently, there is only one unaccompanied refugee minor program in the state of Florida, and it’s located in Miami and run by the Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Miami.

The Observer reached out to the organization to inquire if it encountered any zoning issues when setting up the program, but did not receive a response in time for publication.

Spraker said city staff has not contacted other jurisdictions to see how they have handled zoning laws in regards to unaccompanied refugee minor programs.

“Each jurisdiction has established uses for the individual zoning districts,” he said. “There is a process by which to seek the use as a planned development rezoning through the public hearing process. This application has been handled as any other use that is not allowed in a zoning district.”

City staff, he added, does not have the authority under the land development code to allow uses not identified in the zoning district.

The public hearing process is not an option the federal government will agree to undergo, Johnson explained, as it could put the undocumented children in danger by revealing the building’s location. She feels that the city is declining to assist in the federal government’s mission to find a comfortable and safe space for these children.

“Due to this program, it doesn’t fit in the paradigm of all the structures that you have, and down south treated it as such, but Ormond Beach will not,” Johnson said.

A part owner of an assisted living facility in Ormond Beach is among those who are trying to answer the call, but she has encountered a significant hurdle: the city’s zoning laws.

Tara Johnson was approached in May by the ORR for the chance to convert her 110-bed assisted living facility into housing under the unaccompanied refugee minor program. She thought the building would be perfect for the initiative; the property is secluded, and it has a classroom, common areas, and even an in-house barbershop for the children. The work is already done; the rooms just need occupants.

The property — the Ormond Beach Observer is not disclosing its address to protect undocumented children in the event that they are housed there in the future — is zoned B-7 Highway Tourist Commercial. The city’s position is that using the property to house undocumented children is not identified or allowed within that zoning district.

But Johnson argues that this isn’t a regular foster group home.

“This does not even fall into those guidelines,” she said. “The issue we have is over there where they have thousands and thousands of children, and we’re just trying to help.”

two options for moving forward: 1) If she believes that Planning Director Steven Spraker made an error in the interpretation of the property’s use, she can file a $300 appeal to the City Commission; or 2) she can go through a Planned Business Development zoning process.

“The Planned Business Development zoning process is the only process that would allow the property owners to introduce uses not identified in the zoning district, through a public hearing process,” Shanahan said.

Under a B-7 zoning district, a building can be utilized in 13 different permitted uses, among them an assisted living facility, adult day care center, an office, funeral home, school, and transient lodging. Spraker, who also responded via email, said transient lodging would not apply to Johnson’s request because the city’s land development code states the property would have to be “licensed by the state as a hotel, motel, timeshare resort, bed and breakfast, executive suite or similar use.”

When asked if Johnson’s facility could qualify as a “community residential home,” a conditional use in the B-7 zoning district, Spraker said “No, the described use does not qualify as a community residential home.”

The city’s code states that a community residential home means a “a dwelling unit licensed to serve residents who are clients of the Department of Elderly Affairs, the Agency for Persons with Disabilities, the Department

AdventHealth peaks ‘above any previous waves’ of COVID-19 impact

Officials of AdventHealth’s Central Florida Division reassured citizens Friday, July 30, that the health care system is equipped to handle the region’s unprecedented COVID-19 surge and implored those who are unvaccinated to get a vaccination now.

Hospitalizations among the seven-county area, including Flagler and Volusia counties, surpassed 1,060 Friday, July 30.

By Tuesday, Aug. 3, that number rose to about 1,200.

“We have peaked above any previous waves and it is straining our system, physicians and team members,” Neil Finkler, the division’s chief clinical officer, said in the July 30 briefing.

“None of these patients thought they would get the virus. But the delta variant has proven to be so highly contagious that even the young and healthy – including the pregnant – are filling up our hospitals.”

FRIED AIMS FOR GREATER TRANSPARENCY IN COVID REPORTING Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried plans to have her department release daily reports on COVID-19 cases, deaths and hospitalizations because the Florida Department of Health — under her political foe, Gov. Ron DeSantis — has switched to providing such information once a week.

Fried, the only Democrat holding a statewide office and a 2022 candidate for governor, said she is still working on how the information will be provided, through press conferences, news releases or online posts.

But with the delta variant of the coronavirus driving up case numbers in Florida, she told reporters Wednesday, July 28, that the “people of Florida need and deserve access to regular timely updates as it re-

“For the most part, it’s a tale of two cities,” he said.

He said breakthrough infections among the fully vaccinated do occur but they tend to be milder cases of shorter duration that don’t require hospitalization.

“We’re here today to implore our community, if you have not been vaccinated, please vaccinate now,” he said.

Finkler said in this recent surge, 99% of COVID deaths have been among the unvaccinated population.

Other than through her megaphone as a statewide elected official and as head of the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Fried has little direct control over the state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fried said she isn’t calling for lockdowns or mandatory mask mandates, which she did a year ago. But she said she intends to provide data submitted by county health departments to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the White House Health Equity COVID-19 Task Force.

The Florida Department of Health in early June scaled back from releasing daily reports to weekly reports, as new cases and hospitalizations dropped.

Also, the weekly reports provide less detailed information than the daily reports, which were posted for much of 2020 and the first half of 2021.

HOSPITALIZATIONS KEEP RISING Halifax Health has triple the amount of admitted COVID-19 patients now compared to the last surge in January, said Dr. Margaret Crossman, the hospital’s chief medical officer, during the County Council meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 3.

Crossman informed the council that Halifax Health currently has 150 admitted COVID-19 patients in its Daytona, Port Orange and Deltona facilities combined, 50 of which are in critical care. Of those, 25 require a ventilator.

In the prior surge, the hospital saw a maximum of 55 patients total in the hospital’s three facilities.

The only change for elective surgeries — which were suspended at Adventhealth

But Johnson and Finkler said it is hard to predict how long the surge will last. The rate of positive COVID tests at AdventHealth’s Centra Care clinics is at or near its peak of 26%.

“Centra Care’s typically been the canary in the coal mine for us, a predictor (for hospital admissions),” Finkler said. “We think we are going to see increased admissions at least for the next week, if not two.”

The doctors urged people in need of a COVID test to avoid emergency rooms unless they are having trouble breathing.

Finkler said there has been a change in the demographics of COVID patients. The average age, he said, is now in the 50s with about one-third under the age of 50. He said pediatric cases increased early in the week, driven by the contagious Delta variant, and urged parents to consider having their children wear masks in the classroom when school resumes.

Black status will remain in effect at least until next week, AdventHealth officials announced.

“Black Status allows us to redeploy clinicians and nurses,” Johnson said. “Whatever we ask of our nurses and physicians, they say yes. But they are exhausted. We see the faces. We see the regret.

We see the despair.

“We see the goodbyes,” she added. “At that point it’s too late to wear a mask or get a vaccine.”

DeSantis’ office has said the administration does not plan to return to daily reports.

Meanwhile, DeSantis on Wednesday raised money for his political committee through an email that blasted Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a favorite target of conservatives.

Also, during an appearance at a conservative policy conference in Utah hosted by the American Legislative Exchange Council, DeSantis mocked new mask guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

On Tuesday night, DeSantis accused the CDC of being ideologically driven as he appeared on the Mark Levin Show.

“So much of this is not science Mark, it’s political science,” DeSantis said. “And that’s what I think the CDC unfortunately has been operating under now for many, many months.”

VIDEO EVIDENCE 2:00 p.m. — 1300 block of West Granada Boulevard Suspicious incident. A 50-yearold Palm Coast woman asked to watch the surveillance footage from a local cafe chain restaurant after she claimed her purse had been stolen from the establishment.

The woman, whom the officer noted appeared to be irritated with him, stated that she believed to have left her purse on the table she had been dining at. The officer checked with the cafe’s manager, who reported no purse had been turned in. Later when the footage became available, the officer saw that it showed the woman leaving the cafe — and she had her purse.

The officer called the woman and informed her of his findings.

According to the police report, the man told officers that his account had been compromised a week prior and that he had been unable to access it until the social media platform solved the issue. During that time, the hacker sent money requests via the app to the man’s friends and family.

His bank advised that his funds had been transferred to a bank account from Jamaica. Thankfully, the man was able to get his money back.

AdventHealth’s Central Florida Division currently has about 1,200 admitted COVID-19 patients in its hospitals in Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Lake, Polk, Volusia and Flagler counties. Of that figure, about 300 are in Volusia’s hospitals.

Like at Halifax, about 90% of admitted COVID-19 patients at AdventHealth are unvaccinated.

Both hospital systems have transitioned to virtual visits only for COVID-19 patients, with exceptions made for obstetrics and pediatric patients.

Dear Editor: Health issues aside, I did not bother to attend the recent meetings, especially the one where the mayor called a special meeting regarding the fate of the church on North Beach Street. I feel bad for those of you who gave of your time in good faith, for good causes.

But, I have learned over the past four years that there is no justice in this town. If you reflect back on the various issues that came forth to a City Commission vote, you will see that the commission (and their developer friends) won out every time — no matter what what the citizens presented, or how many showed up to the meetings. Do you remember: 1) New Britain Avenue; 2) Granada Pointe a) the Wawa, b) the car wash, c) the traffic light at Granada/Tomoka Ave, and d) do not forget the clearcutting issue that preceded these three; 3) the floating dock; 4) the expensive palm trees on Granada Boulevard; 5) the infamous “OB Life” debacle.

Now, the demolition of the church to build a parking lot? I would wager that this lot will be primarily used by the restaurants (especially valet) around the corner on Granada Boulevard — certainly not for the immediate local residents (unless they are known

to throw some humungous parties). Lest we forget the fact that the total cost of this eventual parking lot will be in excess of $1 million, taking into account the original cost of $729,000, “incidentals” during the interim, demolition and eventual construction of the slab.

As stated above, this dominance by your City Commission is nothing new. In fact, if you look back at the Nov. 7, 2019, issue of the Ormond Beach Observer, you will note a similar theme in my letter , “Commission is the root of the problem.”

We, the good guys of Ormond Beach, will just have to face facts — we live in a community dominated by a population of five!

And we have yet to deal with the “Hand Avenue Extension” issue, which, if allowed to pass, will be the demise of Ormond Beach.

Larger aircraft and corporate jets Dear Editor: In regards to the city stating they will not allow larger planes: The Oct. 10, 2017,

Observer reported, “In other airport developments, Mannarino said the extension of the east-west runway to 1,000 feet to allow larger planes is still in the plans.”

Go to page 10 and 11 in the Environmental Assessment report. Look up the user needs, the aircraft models used and their size.

It is all about bringing in bigger aircraft and selling fuel.

Page 8 of same report states: “With typical fuel capacities exceeding 800 gallons each and jet fuel burn between 140 and 225 gallons per flight hour the loss of future fuel sales revenue alone is significant. Just one hour flown by each of the 622 expected aircraft will require almost 100,000 gallons of jet fuel.”

Page 4 of minutes from August 24, 2015, public meeting states: “Mr. McDougal [of Hoyle, Tanner & Associates] stated that the heliport at the airport was designed for an aircraft that was 12,000 pounds and 48 feet long. He noted that something else could land there, but that was what it was designed for. He explained that the same provision applied to the runway in that a larger aircraft could land on a ‘B-II’ runway but noted that the pilot would have to be cautious, realize his risks and possibly need some ground handling guidance as he taxied in because the obstruction

The Volusia County Council is updating its public meeting rules ordinance, and among the changes is a time restriction for public participation on items not on the agenda at the start of each meeting.

Per a 3-2 vote at the council meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 3, (Councilmen Ben Johnson and Fred Lowry were absent) the time for public input will be limited to one hour. Councilwoman Heather Post and Chair Jeff Brower voted against.

“I don’t think it’s unreasonable to allow that time at the beginning of the meetings,” Post said. “If there’s a lot of public comment, we can always discuss and change things around a little bit.”

response to the argument presented by the rest of the council members that a lengthy public comment session — such as the two hours that occurred during the short-term rental debate in mid-May — negatively impact speakers and attorneys representing items scheduled in a meeting’s agenda. “We certainly are not denying them any time to speak, it’s just trying to get it organized so we can also conduct business afterward,” Wheeler said.

The new ordinance, to be brought back by county staff in September, will also give guidance on the use of videos in lieu of speaking during public participation.

In addition, businesses providing aeronautical services such as aircraft maintenance have seen increased demand for services by operators of larger aircraft.” Page 6-13: “However, there is a latent demand from some airport users operating larger aircraft to extend runway 8/26 in order to reduce operational restriction or to allow ‘larger general aviation aircraft’ use of the airport.”

Also, future operations are forecast to increase annually with or without an extension. Read and research, please.

Once it is done, don’t waste your time looking back at what you’ve lost.

he Ormond Beach Police Department hosted its annual National Night Out event themed “Red, White and Blue,” at the Nova Community Center on Tuesday, Aug. 3.

The free event, held nationwide in over 15,000 communities, is meant to promote a community and police partnership. According to a press release, National Night Out “enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. It furthermore provides an opportunity to bring police and neighbors together.”

This year’s event featured a photo booth, rock-climbing wall, bounce houses, music and live performances.

Recently, Flagler Animal Services (Animal Control), which works within Flagler Humane Society, was called out to rescue an injured raccoon. The curious raccoon had been injured while trying to free himself from a crab trap — yes, a crab trap.

The young male raccoon’s left eye was punctured to the point where the eye was not salvageable. He needed surgery. Surgery on wild animals, especially a raccoon, isn’t commonly performed. Although any warmblooded animal can host the rabies virus, it is a bit more common in raccoons, so most hospitals won’t see raccoons. Sick or injured raccoons are most often euthanized.

This little guy was so young though, and otherwise healthy.

We began to call around to see if a hospital or rehab facility that specialized in wildlife would care for him.

Dr. Thomas Freiberg to the rescue.

I messaged Tina Freiberg, Dr. Freiberg’s wife. Between Dr. Freiberg and his wife, they have the love and compassion of a thousand people. They will do anything to help an animal in need. I sent them a photo of the injured baby. They simply said, “Can you have him here by noon?”

So, yes, FHS employee Jaden Donald rushed the injured raccoon down to Freiberg’s Healing Paws in Ormond Beach.

baby. Freiberg performed surgery to remove the painful and useless eye. The raccoon’s recovery began immediately. Jaden picked the raccoon up that afternoon and volunteered to care for the baby until a facility was found that would be willing to accept the raccoon who we named “Tommy” after Dr. Thomas Freiberg.

Tommy is doing quite well. He drinks out of a bottle and eats bananas, but his favorite food is grapes. He snuggles under his blankets and plays with cat toys. Jaden is handling him as little as possible so that he can remain as wild as he was born to be.

At this point, the plan is for Tommy to go to The Ark Wildlife Care and Sanctuary. He may never be able to live as a completely wild animal, as he would be susceptible to predators and other dangers like traffic since he only has sight on one side. He may remain at the sanctuary where he will have space to act out normal behaviors yet still be protected.

Thanks to Dr, Freiberg and his amazing staff, Tommy has a chance at life.

The program runs from May to August, with many students returning during their winter break in December and January.

Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA to be accepted in to the 18-week program.

Marlena Pigliacampi was the top-scoring candidate for the Gunther and Lee Weigel Medical School Scholarship, according to an announcement. She will be attending Marshall University’s Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine in the fall.

The Gunther and Lee Weigel Medical School Scholarship is only open to current and former scholarship recipients of the Elks National Foundation. This year, the foundation awarded 10 $22,000 scholarships to students entering their first year of medical school.

he Museum of Arts and Sciences hosted a ’70s-themed birthday celebration for its 50th year of successful operation at the Nova Road location in Daytona Beach Sunday, July 25.

Dense green vegetation surrounded the path that led visitors to the museum nestled in the Tuscawilla Preserve. The white and tan block building rose out of the foliage with a warm welcoming glow emanating through its open glass frontage.

Classic cars crowded the courtyard, setting the tone for the event with a 1971 black and gold Chevy Chevelle SS parked in their midst.

The muscle car was at the height of production the same year the museum had its grand opening.

Andrew Sandall has been the executive director of the museum for over nine years, which is nearly a third of his 30-year career working with museums. He is a native of England but has spent over half the time in his profession as a resident of the United States and now calls Florida his home. When Sandall arrived, the museum was already established but he has been instrumental in its modernization. During his tenure, the Cici and Hyatt Brown Museum of Art was built along with the restoration of the L. Gale Lemerand Wing after it flooded.

“I think it’s such a great time for reflection,” Sandall said. “It seems like we’ve been here longer in some ways, but when you actually put a number on it, it’s staggering to think what we have achieved and what we’ve got here.

I don’t think people even know a time when there wasn’t a MOAS in town because we’ve been such a fixture in the community.”

Volunteers greeted guests as they signed in. MOAS members were free with nonmembers paying $5. DJ Jukebox Bully Danna Alencar played a wide array of top oldies from the decade while people perused the various museum galleries and exhibits. Patrons were offered a list of event happenings which included guided tours of the Tuscawilla Preserve, “That 70s Star Show” and “Sounds of the 70s Laser Show” in the Lohman Planetarium. That afternoon, the 1971 president Leila Gosney and the current president Katherine Hurst Miller kicked off the birthday cake cutting ceremony followed by happy hour.

grow from 45,000 square feet to its current 102,000 square feet.

Due to the foresight of the museum operators in the mid-1960s, they were able to secure 10 acres in Tuscawilla Park, which became the facilities third location while serendipitously rescuing the preserve from urban development.

MOAS currently owns the entire 90 acres of the preserve.

“What’s really good about a place like this is that it’s an oasis,” Zacharias said. “It’s the last refuge for plants and animals that are native to this area. It’s a stopover place for a lot of birds that are migrating from north to south and south to north. It’s also a chance for people to see what the environment was like when the first people came here.”

Sandall believes that the key to staying relevant is by listening to what the community needs the museum to be and to continue to be a valuable resource. This fall, Volusia County Schools will be utilizing the museum for science education. MOAS benefactors Lowell and Nancy Lohman recently donated $340,000 to provide museum passes for all fifth and eighth graders, approximately 10,000 students. According to the school district’s website, the school board approved a formal agreement between VCS and MOAS to establish the new field study program.

Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry is well aware of the museum’s value within the community. He has officially decreed July 25 as the Museum of Arts and Sciences Day.

Volusia erects beach panel telling the Housing sales, median price story of infamous 1896 shipwreck and new listings rise in June VOLUSIA COUNTY COMMUNITY INFORMATION

It was a maritime tragedy on the high seas that ended in December 1896 with three deaths and the grounding of a massive, 167-foot schooner on a sandbar just off the coast of Ormond Beach.

Two members of the crew perished after the enormous ship nearly capsized and drifted at sea for several days, rocked by treacherous waves and winds. Accounts of the event document the bravery of local residents who rushed to the beach to help rescue the remaining crew from the disabled vessel. One of the responders lost his life during the rescue efforts.

The wreck of the Nathan F. Cobb in the turbulent, stormy waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the resulting loss of life was a major calamity. But it’s also a part of local history, now chronicled in a striking interpretive panel that the county erected this week at the Cardinal Avenue beach approach, not far from the site where the ship ran aground.

With its cargo of crossties and lumber, the triple-mast schooner sailed out into the Atlantic on Dec. 1, 1896 from the port of Brunswick, Georgia, headed north to New York. An Atlantic gale battered the ship and the

high surf and winds pushed it south towards Florida. On Dec. 5, 1896, the craft ran aground off of Ormond Beach, going on to become a local, legendary tale of tragedy and heroism.

The Volusia County Coastal Division helped bring the story of the Cobb to life with an outdoor interpretive panel produced by Tom Baskett, Volusia County’s public historian, based in the Parks, Recreation and Culture Division. Measuring 42 inches by 24 inches, the display combines photos and text exploring the Nathan F. Cobb’s wreck and the ship’s background. The panel is made out of custom, high-pressure laminate with a beveled edge and matte finish.

The vibrant graphic displays are fade-resistant. On view by a beach approach that averages

more than 10,000 vehicle entries annually, the display includes an 1890 photo of the Cobb’s launch in Maine, plus a remarkable image of the grounded ship at Ormond Beach and a historical shot of a house on Orchard Lane built out of wood salvaged from the wreck. The cottage still stands today.

Remnants of the shipwrecked craft remain buried below the sandy ocean bottom close to the shoreline, and a sign on the beach along the surf just north of Cardinal Avenue warns swimmers to keep their distance for safety reasons. In fact, the sand-covered hull has made an occasional appearance at very low tides.

“From her hopeful launching in Maine to her tragic end here, the Cobb furnished a maritime drama,” states the panel’s text.

Florida’s housing market continued the same trends as previous months, with more closed sales, higher median prices and more new listings compared to a year ago, according to Florida Realtors latest housing data.

“Coming out of a record spring home-buying season, the state’s housing market continued its strong gains in June,” said 2021 Florida Realtors President Cheryl Lambert, broker-owner with Only Way Realty Citrus in Inverness. “Of course, the impact of the pandemic last June is still a factor to consider when looking at the comparison data. In a positive sign, new listings for singlefamily existing homes in June rose 21.6% year-over-year, while new listings for condos-townhouse properties increased 10%.”

Closed sales of single-family homes statewide in June totaled 34,165, up 23.6% year-over-year, while existing condo-townhouse sales totaled 16,155, up 79.6% over June 2020. Closed sales may occur from 30- to 90-plus days after sales contracts are written.

The statewide median sales price for single-family existing homes in June was $351,000, up 24.5% from the previous year, according to data from Florida Realtors Research Department in partnership with local Realtor boards/associations. Last month’s statewide median price

For now, though, the numbers continue to astound,” he said.

Another trend to consider, O’Connor added, is that over the past few months, the share of closed sales that are all-cash purchases has been on the rise compared to recent norms.

“Over in the single-family category, 31% of closed sales were all-cash this June, compared to 19% a year ago and 22.4% in 2019,” he said. “The last time Florida had more than 31% single-family cash sales in June was in 2015, when the state was still working the last foreclosures from the Great Recession out of the system.”

On the supply side of the market, inventory (active listings) remained extremely tight in June.

Single-family existing homes were at a very low 1.2-months’ supply while condo-townhouse inventory was at a 1.8-months’ supply.

fficial practices began for Florida high school football teams on Monday, Aug. 2, and Mainland High School Buccaneers joined their ranks at 9:30 a.m. in the blistering heat.

ment. Mainland is his alma mater, where he was part of the 2003 state championship team and Wilson’s defensive coordinator from 2012 to 2016.

Even while he was a coach at Flagler Palm Coast High School, he thought it was pretty cool that Wilson got to coach his alma mater’s team, Roland said. Now, he’s in that same position.

“It’s a different feeling being back as head coach,” Roland said.
