Brewery/restaurant to open soon Surf shop owner sees synergy

among East Granada businesses

The historic Ormond Garage has been repurposed.

You’ll be able to enjoy a freshly-brewed beer, but you won’t be able to get your car fixed at Ormond Garage Brewing, a restaurant and brewery soon to open in the former Ormond Garage at 48 W. Granada Blvd.

Business owner Keven Wakefield hopes to open in early July and has hired a brewer who previously worked at Persimmon Hollow Brewing in DeLand.

The building was constructed in 1919 as an extension of the larger and more famous Ormond Garage on East Granada Boulevard that burned down in 1976.

The board approved the request unanimously.

Wakefield also owns Grind Gastropub and Kona Tiki Bar and his landlord is Wivigeco Inc., owned by Bill Jones, who has refurbished several buildings in the West Granada Boulevard area.

Jones also owns the garage, and it has been restored in recent years.

Ormond MainStreet Director Julia Truilo supported the signage request in a letter to the Planning Board.

“The Ormond Garage is a building that speaks volumes about Ormond Beach’s past,” she wrote. “It is a direct connection to the nascent racing culture that began here in the early 20th century. Unlike its wooden brother on East Granada, it has survived the ups and downs of history and remains one of the town’s visual icons.”

Dorian Burt, project coordinator for Jones, said in the special exception request that Jones has received a state Department of Historic Preservation Award for the restoration of the building.

The Ormond Beach Planning Board unanimously approved a special exception for an outdoor display of surfboards at Granada Surf Shop, 220 E. Granada Blvd. at their June 13 meeting.

Dave Mongeau, who owns the shop along with wife Rebecca, said the surfboards have been a big help in attracting attention to his business.

Planning Board members said it was a good example of how special exceptions can help a business.

“This is the exact reason we can’t rid of special exceptions,” said board member G.G. Galloway.

Al Jorczak said it shows how a small thing can improve a business.

After the meeting, Mongeau said foot traffic has improved a lot for businesses on the south side of Granada Boulevard in the last two years. He pointed to Donnie’s Donuts, Preppy Beach and Tomoka Brewery as attracting customers.

“This corner was forgotten for a long time,” he said.

Unfortunately, there are no pedestrian crosswalks between State Road A1A and Halifax Drive, and Mongeau sees people running across the busy thoroughfare from Granada Plaza.

“I want to help out those in my own backyard,” he said.

The name carries a bit of history. There was a Granada Surf Shop in that location around 1980.

Granada Surf Shop has a large selection of locally-shaped boards, as well as boards from California.

Drive-thru DRAMA Chelsea Place residents oppose drive-thru plans.

The newest addition to Shoppes on Granada, located east of Lowe’s Home Improvement, may be a Starbucks with a drive-thru, similar to the one being constructed on the beachside. The Starbucks on West Granada Boulevard would relocate to the site.

This identity of the planned business at that location was not known until the June 13 Planning Board meeting where officials considered approval of a special exception allowing a “drive-thru restaurant” in Phase Two of the development. That area of Granada Boulevard is zoned commercial, but a drive-thru restaurant requires a special exception.

At the meeting, Chelsea Place residents protested increased traffic, and Planning Board members indicated they might vote against approval of the special exception, also because of traffic concerns.

Roger Strcula, of Upham Inc., engineer for Ferber Construction Management LLC, had said that the developer did not want to reveal the proposed drive-thru because he did not have a letter of intent signed by the company. But after much of the negative discussion, he came forward to reveal it was a Starbucks, and this seemed to ease the minds of the Planning Board members.

“I don’t compare a restaurant with a Starbucks,” said board member Harold Briley.

The Planning Board voted to approve the special exception in a 3-2 vote after two hours of resident and board comments. The City Commission will make the final decision in one reading on July 30.

with a limit for a 2,400-squarefoot building and Lori Tolland seconded. The size limit was added to prevent the building of a larger business with more traffic impact.

Strcula said the proposed building is too small for a McDonald’s, for example.

The only no votes were from Chairman Doug Thomas and board member Angeline Schull, who had both said traffic is a problem in the area.

RESIDENTS OPPOSE EXCEPTION

Five Chelsea Place residents spoke at the meeting, saying they already have a hard time pulling out onto Granada Boulevard. They said they have to wait until the stop light at the Lowe’s entrance is red for traffic to clear, but now people exiting Shoppes on Granada add traffic even when the light is red.

Too much traffic also prevents them from accessing the median cut-thru at their exit, forcing them to travel east before making a U-turn to go west.

“I can’t believe there’s not another use that would generate a profit,” a resident said, adding that noise is also a factor.

“I’m tired of hearing the dumpsters being emptied,” he said.

One resident said the city should consider a wall to keep noise and uninvited people from entering Chelsea Place.

Board member G.G. Galloway pointed out that Chelsea Place has continued to grow, and residential adds to a busy Granada Boulevard.

“Which came first, the chicken or the egg?” he asked.

at the meeting said it’s not fair to ask them go out of their way and use the south exit. They also said Hand Avenue will probably also see more traffic and development in the future.

After it was revealed that the restaurant may be a Starbucks, Thomas, in an unusual move, asked the residents at the meeting if they would like to appoint a spokesman and speak again.

After a break, two residents spoke, saying that they still opposed the special exception because it would stay with the property, and someday a fastfood drive-thru could be built.

They said they would prefer that the city leave the zoning as it is, with no special exceptions that could increase traffic.

The board members added the limit on square footage to alleviate some of the concerns.

A traffic study in the meeting packet showed that FDOT believes Granada can handle the traffic flow. Strcula said FDOT is working on synchronization of the stop lights on Granada to improve the traffic.

Thomas said they had been hearing about the improved synchronization for a long time and asked Planning Director Steven Spraker when FDOT will finally work on it. Spraker said he expected 2020, but had no new information.

Thomas said he was suspicious of traffic studies that allow more and more development.

“At some point you have to say wait a minute,” he said.

Council green-lights $12 million loan for Daytona Beach International Airport

The CenterState Bank loan will be repaid using airport revenue.

WILL THE COUNCIL PLACE THE COUNTY CHARTER ON THE BALLOT? During the County Council workshop on Tuesday, June 18, Councilwoman Heather Post suggested placing the Volusia County charter on the 2020 ballot, because if the county loses a legal battle over Amendment 10, the document will contradict the constitution.

The County’s Home Rule Charter was first approved by voters in a special referendum in 1970, and was created by a 21-member citizen committee, according to the county website. It provides the framework for how government operates in Volusia, but the county argues that Amendment 10 — which requires elections for the sheriff, tax collector, property appraiser, clerk of court and the supervisor of elections — violates the charter.

Post said that, because the amendment passed, perhaps the council should see that as an indicator that the charter is no longer compatible with the current population.

“I think change isn’t always bad,” Post said.

The rest of the council disagreed. Councilman Fred Lowry said that would mean assuming that people voted to change the charter when they voted for Amendment 10.

“I think you’re making a quantum leap there,” Lowry said.

Councilman Ben Johnson said that before the charter, the county was run by “non-professionals,” and that if the county were to revert to that, Volusia could be “turned upside down.”

“If we’re not past that now in 2019 and you have fear of us reverting back to that, we have bigger issues to deal with,” Councilwoman Barb Girtman said.

For the charter to be placed on the ballot, it would first need to be repealed by the council with a two-thirds vote.

The Volusia County Council unanimously approved a $12 million loan agreement at its meeting on Tuesday, June 18, for renovations at the Daytona Beach International Airport.

The tax exempt loan by CenterState Bank will be used for improvements to the airport’s domestic terminal, including updating the technology and replacing the escalators, plus cosmetic work. Rick Karl, director of the Daytona Beach International Airport and the county’s Aviation and Economic Resources department, said the loan will be paid back using revenues generated at the airport, and not with taxpayer money.

“These improvements are badly needed,” Karl said.

The airport brings in an annual economic impact of $2.1 billion to the community, he added.

County Manager George Recktenwald said it was the right time to do all the improvements, as the technology upgrades would likely “mess the place up.” He said the county needed to also stay competitive with its airport.

“It’s important that we offer all the latest and greatest for our airlines that are there and any others that we wish to attract,” Recktenwald said.

Earlier this month, Silver Airways announced it would be suspending service between Daytona Beach and Fort Lauderdale, starting on July 1.

money, but that the first impression for visitors coming into the city was important, especially as the county courts more industries and businesses.

Daytona Beach resident John Nicholson asked if all the improvements were needed, because $12 million was a big figure. Technology upgrades are needed, he said, but he questioned the need for other improvements. The fact that the airport is old doesn’t mean it needs to change, he said.

“If this is one or two or three or four million dollars that you don’t need, I ask you to look at it very carefully,” Nicholson said.

“I’ve thought for years that it’s a shortcoming in the city that should be overcome, and that they should have something that’s theirs,” Boehm said.

He’s looking forward to the day the field is built and the first game is played there.

Boehm said it was gratifying that the Leisure Services Advisory Board felt he had done enough work with youth sports and recreation to merit that having the field named after him.

“It’s something of a lifetime achievement award, I guess you could call it,” Boehm said.

The city of Ormond Beach has dedicated the future girls softball field at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex in the name of former City Commissioner Rick Boehm, an advocate for quality leisure services in the city and for having equal facilities for girls.

A proclamation from the June 1 dedication and groundbreaking ceremony detailed Boehm’s role in the city’s youth sports and recreation activities. Boehm began serving on the Leisure Services Advisory Board in 2004, and was elected to the City Commission in 2010. He retired from the commission in November 2018 and has since returned to serve on the Leisure Services Advisory Board.

The proclamation states that Boehm has campaigned for recreation interests in his various roles, including advocating for a more accessible playground for physically impaired children and helping form a Pop Warner football league.

“It was a really great day for Ormond Beach all the way around,” Mayor Bill Partington said. “You couldn’t choose a better person to honor.”

The city has never had a designated regulation women’s softball field, Boehm said. The girls and adult women who play the sport in the city have always had to use to the softball quad in the Sports

YOUR TOWN FUN RUN AIMS TO PREVENT DROWNING Local organization Urban Surf 4 Kids is partnering with Sunshine Health for its first-annual First Responders Fun Run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, at the Daytona Beach Bandshell.

This outreach program works with orphan youth and foster kids, and uses water sports to teach kids how to have fun, as well as give back to their communities and neighborhoods through service projects. The upcoming Fun Run aims to help prevent drowning, and Urban Surf 4 Kids is collecting up to 10,000 signatures for the #EveryFosterYouthSwims petition to enact a law that every child in foster care or who is considered at-risk would be required to learn how to swim, according to a press release. The organization is also hoping to raise $42,000 to provide swim lessons and water therapy programs for every foster youth in the county.

The organization was started

by DeBora and Wesley Stewart while on vacation.

“We definitely want to stay and impact the community;” said DeBora Stewart in a press release. “Consistency and longevity is the very core of what we do and strive to do.”

Through Wesley Stewart’s enthusiasm for paddle boarding, surfing and love of water, and DeBora Stewart’s experience of being a former administrator for Hospice, the Florida chapter of Urban Surf 4 Kids was born. The first chapter was started in San Diego.

Two of the children taking part in the event are 13-year-old Rozeanna and 10-year-old Hunter Wolfe Dienst, of Ormond Beach.

They are active participators of Urban Surf 4 Kids events, and are children coming from a single parent home, which the organization also benefits.

“I have no fear of the water,” said Hunter Dienst in a press release. “It’s fun. I feel confident, like I can do anything. I love [Wesley Stewart]. He’s almost like a

BIZ BUZZ $1.4 MILLION SALE ON A1A An 8.1-acre residential development project in Ormond-by-the-Sea, previously known as Elena by the Sea, was sold for $1.4 million. The site, located on the west side State Road A1A just north of Beau Rivage Drive, was previously entitled for 30 single-family lots but was never developed.

The buyer, Lake Pointe Villas LLC, intends to develop the community starting later this year, according to SVN Alliance, who negotiated the sale.

Based on a line in a book

by Alice Strickland, the site has been rumored to be the gravesite of victims of the shipwreck of the City of Vera Cruz 139 years ago off the coast of Cape Canaveral.

The ocean’s currents carried bodies north, scattering them as far as St. Augustine.

However, no evidence has been found, and the bodies could have been buried anywhere along the coast.

LETT ERS ‘Careless driving’ brings no penalties Dear Editor: The Ormond Beach Observer states that there was only one fatality in 2018 in Ormond.

The accident that caused my husband‘s death last year was on State Road A1A in the section they consider Ormondby-the-Sea. Was that the one death? Are you sure?

While in Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach, my family shared the waiting room with the family of a young woman who also died of injuries.

Her injuries were due to an automobile running into her while walking on the sidewalk.

Another death to add to the tally for 2018.

Did you know you can kill someone in Florida using your vehicle and walk away without a fine or a ticket? A 31-year-old female, A.Z., drove her sister’s Volkswagen Tiguan into my husband. She slammed into the back of John while he was at a dead stop on his motorcycle.

A.Z. was not speeding, but the impact (posted speed limit 45 mph) was enough to cause his death.

Nearly a year later, the only eyewitness did not show up to court. A.Z. did not show up to court; however, her representative did. Her ticket for careless driving was dismissed.

The reason for the dismissal: She was not granted a speedy trial. Keep in mind that A.Z. could’ve just as easily gotten off because the witness did not show up. The woman who killed my husband walked away from the accident without a fine or a ticket. A clean slate, as if it never happen, as if my husband’s life did not matter.

This does not feel like justice to me.

My new understanding of careless driving is that it is one of the easiest tickets to get out of in the state of Florida.

Careless driving is not criminal. Just a traffic violation.

Careless driving is an accident without intent. Careless driving needs a witness or it needs you to confess to the accident.

Careless driving typically has a fine between $160 and $500.

Careless driving is four points on a driver’s license. Careless driving is the catch-all ticket for an accident that was not seen by others.

Did you know? If the trooper did not see the accident, what he says is not admissible in court. Anything that driver of the vehicle says to the trooper is not admissible in court. The driver does not have to participate in any further investigation other than the original questioning at the site. Phone records cannot be subpoenaed, because this was not a criminal case. Distracted driving is careless, not reckless, which would be criminal. So in short, it is not criminal to kill with your auto in Florida. Simply retain an attorney immediately and say you don’t know what happened.

I agree with Mayor Bill Partington. Speeding, distracted driving, and recklessness are major causes of accidents.

People need to be more alert while driving. Drivers need to understand they are driving a lethal weapon. If we do not have enough of a police force to process these accidents, drivers will continue to get off without a judgment.

Where do we go from here?

WRONG INFORMATION 11:02 p.m. — Intersection of West Granada Boulevard and South Nova Road Drugs. A 24-year-old Ormond Beach man on probation for drug possession was arrested again after police found nine full boxes of cannabis oil in his vehicle.

The man claimed he had a medical marijuana card, but it was neither on his person nor inside his car. Initially, he said he had gotten the boxes from a local dispensary, but then said the boxes were from Colorado.

The boxes stated the product was actually manufactures in California, police noted.

Police had pulled the man over after seeing him turn abruptly at the intersection.

When asked for his license and registration, the man told them his license was suspended until Tuesday.

Police conducted a search on the vehicle and found pills and a vape pen.

The man was taken to jail.

DETECTIVE GRANDMA 2:42 p.m. — First block of Sycamore Circle Suspicious incident. An elderly DeLand woman called police to let them know that an Ormond Beach man could be conducting a fraudulent AC Business.

She’d discovered that the man had told her several lies about himself.

The woman told police that the man lied about his age — he said he was 12 years older — and had said that he was a Navy Seal veteran with shrapnel in him. When he missed an

appointment to install an AC unit, the man allegedly told the woman that it was because of his daughter’s graduation, and claimed she was the school’s valedictorian.

The woman then called the school to verify, and found out his daughter wasn’t the valedictorian.

The woman said she believes the man preys on the elderly for contract work and payments, and just wanted to make local law enforcement aware.

JUNE 4

MOBILE FASHION THIEF 6:37 p.m. — 1400 block of West Granada Boulevard Petit theft. A 52-year-old Ormond Beach woman in a motorized wheelchair told police she forgot she had a dress behind her back after she stole it and other clothing items from a local department store.

The store’s loss prevention officer saw the woman enter the fitting room and exit with one item in her hand. The rest appeared to be left in the fitting room, according to the report.

But when the loss prevention officer checked, he saw that multiple items were missing.

Once the woman was stopped by police, the loss prevention officer pointed out there was merchandise sticking out from under her seat.

Police asked the woman to stand, and she did so, revealing the rest of the stolen items. She was taken to jail.

Man of leisure Ormond Beach Leisure Services’ Gerry Pitchford: 27 years of youth sports.

ot much has changed in the past 27 years for Gerry Pitchford, the athletics supervisor for the city of Ormond Beach’s Leisure Services department. The city added field maintenance to his list of responsibilities four years ago, but for the most part, his daily routine remains consistant.

Work begins before sunrise when he walks through the doors of the Nova Community Center at 6 a.m. almost every day.

He meets with his field maintenance team, planning out what their tasks are to be at each of the city’s numerous parks for the day. Then, he sets up the sports programs. He usually doesn’t leave the community center until well past 7 p.m. And he does all of this without a secretary.

He’s all by himself.

Despite the apparent monotony, he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Twenty-seven years is a long time to be anywhere,” Pitchford said. “But I’m where I want to be. I think of what people do every day for a living and how miserable they are. At least I get to go do something every day that I’ve always had a passion for. It never gets old or boring.

“If you don’t enjoy it and have a passion for it, you’re going to get burned out really quickly.”

Before moving to Ormond Beach, Pitchford was living in Carbondale, Illinois. He was a coach for Southern Illinois University’s baseball team, where he played for the Salukis from 1983 to 1986. He was also in charge of the school’s intramural sports.

He was hired by the city almost immediately after moving to Ormond Beach. He knew he wanted to start a volleyball program. He played the sport competitively when he lived up north and described it as his second love — behind only baseball.

He wanted to start an indoor volleyball league for adults, but no one signed up. So he started conducting youth camps, instead.

“I love working with kids,” he said. “I would rather work with kids than adults any day.”

The most current camp is from 6 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 11 to Aug. 1. There are about 45 girls from 9-17. His camp in the fall is attended by about 70 girls.

At the camp, which is hosted on the courts of the Nova Community Center, the girls learn the basics: serving, hitting, digging, blocking and positioning. Scrimmages and other game formats are also played.

camp for so long that he’s now teaching the children of some of his former students.

The greatest joy he’s received from coaching, however, is seeing his students improve and move on to bigger and better things.

He’s watched dozens of girls go on to play in high school for Flagler Palm Coast, Matanzas, Seabreeze, Mainland and Spruce Creek. He still attends as many of their games during the fall season as he can.

“I love teaching the ones who really have the desire, who want to get so much better,” he said.

“To see those kids grow, and see where they end up is the satisfaction of it all.”

Daytona Stadium assembles new management team

Bucs basketball competes in USF tournament

Daytona Stadium, part of the DME Sports Venue Portfolio, has a new management team, according to a news release. DME Sports co-owner Dan Panaggio recently introduced the new leadership duo and outlined the new operating structure.

Tyler Savin was made the director of operations, and Connor Rand was made the business development manager.

These two new, dynamic leaders will be running all aspects of Daytona Stadium sales and operations.

Savin comes from St. Leo University in Tampa, where he spent the last 3.5 years as the assistant director of facilities and operations for athletics.

Rand, a Seabreeze High School graduate born and raised in Ormond Beach, returns home after working for Polk County Tourism and Sports Marketing, where he was the sales and event representative for a wide variety of sports programming.

Mainland defeated George Jenkins 71-68 on Sunday, June 16, in the final game of the University of South Florida’s high school basketball camp. Brandon Cordero went 9-for-10 from the 3-point line and scored a game-high 31 points. Taron Keith scored 16 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished out 3 assists.

ichael Blavis couldn’t focus during his graduation c e re m o ny.

The speeches and announcements for Seabreeze High School seniors came and went, and as his time to collect his diploma and shake the hands of faculty in front of his classmates, friends and family arrived, Blavis was only fixated on one thing: What if he tripped?

While a common concern for many graduates during this milestone, it ran deeper for this 18-year-old. Blavis had spent years of his life working toward this moment, and on May 31, six years after having a cancerous tumor removed from his brain, Blavis stood up from his wheelchair and walked across the stage.

“Honestly, it felt kind of weird,” Blavis said. “But it felt good.”

His mother, Lynette Johnson, was at the end of the stage, taking photos, and was so overwhelmed with emotion she mistakenly didn’t record Blavis with her video camera. It’s a day she’s likely never going to forget, though.

“He was the star,” Johnson said.

“Everybody just started standing up. The students stood up. It was a wave of red standing up and cheering.”

THE DIAGNOSIS

Blavis’ journey to the stage wasn’t an easy one. It started in middle school.

Johnson and Blavis first moved to Ormond Beach from New Jersey six years ago. Everything was an adjustment for both of them. It was a new city; Blavis was going to a new school and had to make new friends. Around Christmas that year, Johnson said Blavis started complaining about nausea and double vision. He told her he was falling asleep in classes.

A few visits to the doctor later, the symptoms were chalked up to Blavis having trouble adjusting to all the changes.

Then summer came, and Johnson sent Blavis back north to the same summer camp he’d attended for the previous five years. But the symptoms remained.

It wasn’t until they came back home and Blavis had a back-toschool health checkup that doctors discovered what was wrong.

Blavis underwent a simple vision test, and his eyes twitched.

Immediately, the doctor wanted to send Blavis to get a brain MRI. “I thought, ‘Well that’s a little drastic for an upset stomach,’”

Johnson recalled.

A few days later, Johnson took Blavis to Twin Lakes Imaging Center after school. She waited for a long time, she remembered.

Eventually, the doctor came out and told her he had something to show her.

Blavis had a tumor the size of a golf ball between the back of his brain and the brain stem.

The doctor told them there was a surgeon waiting for them at Florida Hospital for Children in Orlando, and to grab a few changes of clothes before heading down there because they were going to stay for some time.

Blavis’ father flew down from New Jersey, where he was still working to sell the family house, and the surgery was done. Doctors had reassured Johnson that many kids had undergone the same procedure and were up and moving within four weeks. However, she was informed of a rare side effect called cerebellar mutism where the child’s mobility and speech diminishes after surgery.

“I was just terrified,” Johnson said.

The surgery took six hours, and she remembered Blavis gave her a thumbs up before being taken into intensive care to recover. However, when his medicines were gradually reduced in the days following, Blavis couldn’t talk or move.

He could barely squeeze people’s hands, Johnson said.

She knew her son’s brain was functioning, though, because he could understand what she was saying and would signal “no” and “yes” with his eyes. They later

would discover that along with the cerebellar mustism, there had been some nerve damage during the surgery.

Blavis’ lungs failed, and he was given a feeding tube. What followed was a year of physical therapy and chemo.

Then, Blavis’ dad had a stroke in New Jersey. It was the stress, Johnson said. Her husband was in intensive care for about four months, and there were times when she thought she was going to lose him, but she couldn’t be there with him. Blavis was in no condition to travel.

Though his father’s condition improved and was able to come down to Ormond Beach, he died two years ago.

“So Michael had to live through that, too — seeing his dad sick and losing Dad,” Johnson said.

SMILING THROUGH IT ALL

Blavis never lost his sense of humor.

When he was given an iPad to communicate, the first thing he asked for was a Coca-Cola. He couldn’t eat or drink anything, but that didn’t stop him from asking.

Constantly.

Eventually, he was given a Coca-Cola flavored ChapStick, but it wasn’t quite the same, Blavis recalled.

He dressed up on Halloween that year in the hospital. He decided he was going to be Honey Boo Boo. He spelled it out for his mom on the iPad. Then, at home, he dressed up as a zombie, calling himself “the Rolling Dead.”

REACHING FOR THE DIPLOMA

Blavis didn’t want to fall behind in school. He was homeschooled for about four months and was able to get back on track with his peers, returning to school at the end of eighth grade. Still, things were tough. Blavis was shy; the social aspect of school was hard on him.

“Everyone else had hair, and all this stuff, and I was, I guess, just in the wheelchair,” Blavis said. “ ... But it was all good. I eventually just kept going through.”

Blavis felt different; he was constantly late for classes, had to leave early to avoid the hallway rush in between classes, and couldn’t use the elevator on his own.

However, Blavis persisted and graduated with a B average.

After graduation, Blavis and his family celebrated at Sloppy Joe’s at Oceanwalk. There was a double rainbow over the water, Johnson recalled, and despite what everyone said at the time, she doesn’t think it was a coincidence.

“Michael, that’s Daddy saying how proud he is,” Johnson recalled saying.

Recently, Blavis passed the written test for his driver’s permit. Other than sleeping in during the summer, Blavis said he will be attending Daytona State College in the fall to study computer science.

Graduating from high school still feels like a dream.

“I’m still at home like, ‘Wow, I forgot to do my homework,’” Blavis said. “And then I realize it’s all over, you know? Feels great, though.”
