Citizens plea for delay in church demolition

Daytona Truck Meet’s effect

A group of Ormond Beach residents are still fighting to delay the demolition of the 56 N. Beach St. church.

In May, the City Commission voted 3-2 to demolish the church and turn it into a shell parking lot. The city purchased the property in 2018 for $729,000, and the parking lot is estimated to cost $125,579. Community members and organizations — including Ormond MainStreet — have continuously asked the commission to delay the church’s demolition for six months to allow them to find a way to redevelop the property.

Only Commissioner Dwight Selby and Mayor Bill Partington voted against demolition.

In order for the vote to be reversed, a commissioner who voted in favor of the demolition would have to change his or her mind and call a special meeting.

“I can assure you if I was on the other side of that vote, that I would have flipped my vote, just in respect and because I want the community to have the conversation,” Selby said.

Citizens have since started an email campaign.

The Daytona Truck Meet took place from Friday, June 11 to Sunday, June 13, and in that time the Daytona Beach Police Department and assisting agencies performed 1,111 traffic stops and issued 940 citations.

That is a 1.68% decrease in traffic stops and a 13.1% increase in citations compared to 2020’s event held in September.

The agencies who assisted DBPD in policing the event include the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, Volusia County Beach Safety and Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

Ormond Beach Police did not have any details that targeted the event, but over the weekend, they did issue 87 citations, 100 warnings and 17 trespass warnings, according to the OBPD’s public information officer.

commissioners, according to the city. The church is undergoing a rodent abatement process, to last about 30 days. A demolition permit has not been issued.

For resident Rita Press, a longtime community activist, the commission owes the citizens the courtesy of hearing them out.

“It’s disrespectful to the citizens of this community when you do it during COVID, no one knows about it, and won’t give us six months to explore options, and there are a great deal many options to be explored,” she said.

Among the parties interested is Salty Church, which has proposed covering

the cost to waterproof the building, renovating it, with a vision to lease it from the city to restore it as a church.

Linda Williams, founder of Civil Discourse and Common Ground, said Civil Discourse isn’t taking sides on the issue, but wants to bring the community together to figure out a best use for the church.

A Civil Discourse meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 22 at Salty Church, at 221 Vining Court, to discuss the church.

Press said there is enough parking in the downtown and that it’s not a good use of taxpayer dollars.

“Once [the church] is gone, it’s gone forever,” Press said.

VCS to get rid of uniforms?

The Volusia County School Board will review eliminating its uniform dress code at its next meeting on Tuesday, June 22. If the board chooses to proceed in this direction, the district would advertise the proposed amendments for a future public hearing.

Lowe couldn’t see anything.

“At that point, as I like to explain it, I feel like my life died on that operating room table and a new person came out,” Lowe said. “I say that because everything I ever loved, everything I dreamed of for the future, was literally taken from me. Except for two things, and that was my faith and my family.”

They are the only reasons he battled through those hard days, he said.

“My family is why I kept fighting and my faith is how I did it,” Lowe said.

NEW BEGINNINGS

THE LOWE DOWN Kevin Lowe lost his sight at 17, but through podcasting, people are able to see others the way he does.

“I have no idea what they look like — who they are in a sense, so it’s like meeting them for the first time and getting to know them for who they actually are versus what my brain may form an opinion about,” Lowe said.

Lowe was 17 years old when doctors discovered he had a brain tumor in the crosshairs of his optic nerve. It was pressing against his carotid artery and, had doctors not found it then, Lowe was told he would have had, at most, six months to live.

“It was big,” Lowe said. “They compared it to the size of a plum.”

The news had come at a time when Lowe said his life was really good. He was in his junior year at Seabreeze High School, had a great group of friends, and loved his raised Ford F-150 with all his heart. He and his friends used to go mudding in the field where the AdventHealth Daytona Beach hospital is now located.

But throughout his life, he had always had medical issues. The tumor, which Lowe in line with his sense of humor named Bob, was the root cause.

Everything was supposed to be fine after the tumor was removed, Lowe recalls. He was told he would be out of school for three weeks, and he and his family even threw a going away party for Bob. “It’s one of those things where everything is alright until it’s not,” Lowe said.

He doesn’t remember his time in the hospital, but his family told him that it became apparent a couple days after the surgery that

or most, the year 2020 will forever represent a global pandemic. But for Ormond Beach resident Kevin Lowe, 2020 was a year synonymous with vision.

In October of 2020, Lowe marked the 17th anniversary of the year he lost his sight. Like many, he had big plans for 2020.

He was going to take a cruise with a large group of friends and family to “redefine vision.”

But while things did not go according to plan, 2020 did mark a new beginning for Lowe: the start of his own podcast.

In May of 2020, Lowe launched “The Lowe Down with Kevin Lowe,” a podcast he hoped would serve as a source of inspiration and motivation for others by featuring people who overcame challenges in their lives and went on to be successful.

Since then, Lowe has released over 40 episodes and added a blog to accompany his podcast. What sets him apart in the industry is the one thing he hoped to one day find a cure for — his blindness.

What is cool about podcasting, he said, is that it allows people to see the world and others the same way he does.

FAITH AND FAMILY

One of Lowe’s first goals after losing his vision was to graduate with his class at Seabreeze High School. For the remainder of his junior year, he began learning what he needed to in order to navigate his new life. He learned braille and how to walk using a cane.

He did make it back to Seabreeze at the start of his senior year for one class each morning. That was enough to allow him to be part of his class and when it came time, he walked across the stage with his classmates.

“I think looking back at it now I can see where that was probably the first critical step in showing me, and at the time I didn’t even realize it, that I could still accomplish things even with what happened to me,” Lowe said.

He learned to hate the word “accept,” as he would often hear it from others regarding his loss of vision. In his mind, his blindness was temporary. It was “living a life of buying time until I got to see again,” he described it.

But at some point, something changed and Lowe decided to stop waiting and just live.

“I still have faith that one day I’ll see again,” Lowe said. “At this point, I’ve come to realize most likely it won’t be until I’m in heaven. Until that day happens though, I’m going to live out this life to the best that I can possibly do.”

‘EVERYBODY HAS A STORY’

Lowe is a believer that everything happens for a reason. He is sure that his first 17 years of life — where he flitted from one interest to the next and traveled with his family to destinations like Alaska which some never get to see in their lifetime — were all in preparation for what was to come.

Now, he believes he’s meant to share his story, and other people’s stories, through his podcast, which was born out of his travel agency, Better Days Travel. He opened that in 2013.

The podcast has since evolved beyond his travel agency, and was recently featured in podcastguests.com. Within 24 hours of that happening, Lowe received over 100 responses.

“I think everybody has a story inside them, and even though a lot of people think they don’t and think that their life is boring, it’s totally not true,” Lowe said.

Face coverings are now optional at Volusia County Schools and district facilities following a unanimous vote by the Volusia County School Board on Monday, June 14.

The vote, which amended the current mandatory district mask policy, took place in a special meeting, and the change was effective immediately. In addition, the policy strikes any disciplinary action toward students not wearing masks but does allow students, teachers, and staff to continue to wear a face mask or shield if they would like to do so.

The policy also states that, should COVID-19 conditions escalate, and upon receiving guidance or direction from state officials, the superintendent will notify the board should the policy need to be reconsidered.

In a press release, VCS stated that the “Volusia County School Board will continue to monitor best practices outlined by the CDC and governmental health agencies.”

In the past, School Board member Ruben Colon had expressed reservations about lifting the mask mandate, but at the meeting, he was hopeful for the future.

He said he spoke with the health department that day and that Volusia’s 14-day positivity rate was 4.09%, with 51% of eligible residents having received at least one dose of the vaccine.

“I think we’re getting to the other side,” Colon said. “For that reason, I gladly will support this.”

BRIEF DeSantis backs moments of silence in schools Touting the measure as a way of allowing students to “reflect and be able to pray as they see fit,” Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday, June 14, signed a bill that will require public schools to hold moments of silence at the beginning of each day.

DeSantis signed the bill (HB 529), which will institute one- to two-minute moments of silence in public school classrooms, at The Shul of Bal Harbour, a Jewish community center.

“The idea that you can just push God out of every institution and be successful, I’m sorry, our Founding Fathers did not believe that,” DeSantis said.

When the law goes into effect July 1, public-school principals will be required to direct firstperiod teachers to institute moments of silence. Rep. Omari Hardy, a West Palm Beach Democrat who voted against the bill, accused the Republican sponsors of misrepresenting the intent behind the measure.

“The Republican who sponsored the bill said that it wasn’t about prayer in school. (Of course it was!) But when you question their motives, or their honesty, it’s called a personal attack & deemed out of order. No. The Republicans lie, and we need to call them on it every time,” Hardy said in a tweet Monday.

Q+ A WITH ZONE 1 CITY COMMISSIONER DWIGHT SELBY

It’s an interesting time in the city of Ormond Beach, said City Commissioner Dwight Selby.

A parks and recreation master plan update and new impact fee study are in the works. The city could receive as much as $9 million dollars of federal funds.

Conversations regarding the relocation and construction of a new joint police department and emergency operations center are coming soon.

With several issues impacting Zone 1, which Selby represents, the Observer spoke with the commissioner on Monday, June 14, to get his opinion on some of the latest hot topics. From the church at 56 N. Beach St. to reclaimed water, here is what Selby had to say.

Is there a project that you’re hoping is included in the upcoming budget?

Dedicated funds for police and fire vehicles. A dedicated millage rate or a dedicated revenue source. Right now, we have 60

police cars and we’re buying about six a year. That means, basically, we don’t get rid of a car until it’s 10 years old. We shouldn’t be asking police to be out in a 10-year-old cruiser.

I think public safety is too important to mix up with vehicles that are used for the other operating departments in the city.

What is an issue you’re keeping an eye on in your zone?

The single biggest threat to quality of life in Ormond Beach right now is Avalon Park, and while it’s not directly in my zone, it will impact the entire city.

There’s still a lot that I don’t understand about the city’s responsibilities. I’ve seen the preliminary plat and that only causes me to have more questions, so the thing I’m keeping my eye on is Avalon Park.

I’m working diligently and met with the city manager recently and staff is waiting on a couple of consultant reports before they’re willing to call the first workshop on that.

What are your thoughts on relocating the police station and building an EOC?

This a multi-prong topic, but let me just say the EOC I think is really critical. Had we gotten the

storm surge that was anticipated from one of the recent hurricanes, our EOC would have been underwater. Our police station would have been underwater.

Hard to imagine, but that’s the case. So we had to move it out of the police station. We moved it to the fire station on Nova Road, and that’s OK there, but it really isn’t adequate. I just think the citizens of Ormond Beach deserve better.

Another issue is the repurposing of the existing site. It’s not the highest and best use of that site. It’s got a lot of frontage on Granada and then behind it of course is a parking lot part of the police station, and there’s that huge public parking lot that fronts on Tomoka [Avenue]. When you factor all of that in, you have a large site in the middle of our downtown that fronts on three streets. I just think that there’s a commercial use that could be a huge asset to the downtown. So that’s a secondary benefit of considering the topic.

they also need to do a rodent elimination and that’s like a 30-day process.

That pushes the time table into early July before the actual demolition could begin. In order for the demolition not to commence, somebody who voted for demolition would have to make a motion to reconsider, and a special meeting would have to be called for the consideration of that because our next City Commission meeting is July 20.

With more growth coming to the North U.S. 1 corridor, is the city preparing its infrastructure? How so?

We’re underway right now with an expanded sewer line and water line up U.S. 1, and my understanding is that water line loops through Ormond Crossings.

Also, new sidewalks are going in with that U.S. 1 beautification project and the new interchange at I-95 and U.S. 1. It’s in its Planning Design and Environmental

Is the demolition of the 56 N. Beach St. church a done deal?

The latest is that the contractor is doing an asbestos study, and

(phase) which I had been pushing on that for years at the TPO, and with the help of Maryam Ghyabi, we got that moved up dramatically.

What is something that you’d like to get accomplished in the next year?

I’d like to see us get to a point where we have sufficient reclaimed water storage where we don’t pump one gallon of water into the intercoastal waterway. We’re still permitted for up to a million gallons a day, and during the dry season, we don’t do any. It’s all used to irrigate lawns primarily. But in the rainy season, we are pumping it into the river because we don’t have enough above ground storage.

Even though it’s one notch below potable, it’s not there. I think we can get there. I think we’ve got to be really diligent about it.

WINNING THE LOTTERY 10:33 a.m. — 1500 block of North U.S. 1 Larceny. A 35-year-old transient man lucked out in an unexpected way after he stole two lottery tickets from a local gas station convenience store.

Surveillance video showed the man approaching the counter and reaching between the lottery ticket dispensers to grab two tickets. As police were on the scene, the man walked across the parking lot. The reporting officer ran toward him, at which point the man tried to quickly walk away before being instructed to get on the ground.

He was placed in handcuffs and put in the rear seat of the officer’s patrol car. He admitted to stealing and added that the tickets were not winning tickets.

As he spoke with officers, the store manager wasn’t sure if he wanted to pursue charges, and disclosed he didn’t want to be “inconvenienced,” the report states. He asked a “multitude of hypothetical questions” about court and plea deals, after which he said he did want to pursue charges. However as the officer was completing the arrest paperwork, the manager changed his mind and the man was released.

DRUNK LITTERER 10:15 p.m. — First block of West Granada Boulevard Disorderly intoxication. Police arrested a 26-year-old Port Orange man who was causing a disturbance at a city park while drinking and screaming obscenities at people.

According to his arrest report, as officers approached a gazebo in the park, they saw the man screaming. When the man became aware that police were approaching, he began to throw his alcohol and trash into the river. The reporting officer ran up to him and yelled at him to stop.

He was taken to jail and issued a trespass warning for all city parks.

Cici and Hyatt Brown Hall for Health and Innovation breaks ground at Stetson University The hall is a result of Stetson’s largest-ever single charitable gift, to the tune of $18 million, given to the university by Cici and Hyatt Brown, of Ormond Beach.

The plans had been neatly outlined for some time. Nonetheless, the excitement was palpable while the festive pomp and circumstance of the event was undeniable.

On Friday, June 11, ceremonial shovels dug into dirt, marking the official start of construction on Stetson’s Cici and Hyatt Brown Hall for Health and Innovation.

The two-story, 40,000-squarefoot building — the result of Stetson’s largest-ever single charitable gift — will create a science complex for students studying the health sciences, environmental sciences and other fields. The spaces and experiences will allow ideas, learning and interests to converge and evolve into discoveries and innovative pedagogy.

The building, to be completed for the Fall 2022 semester, will connect to the Sage Hall Science Center through internal glass walkways. As part of the construction activity, Sage Hall is being renovated.

“After more than three years since Cici and Hyatt Brown made their generous gift to this project, we are thrilled — and I mean thrilled — to gather today to officially commence the construction of the new Cici & Hyatt Brown Hall for Health & Innovation at Stetson University,” said Stetson President Christopher F. Roellke.

Roellke spoke to an audiPRINT ence that included enthusiastic Stetson students, faculty, staff, administrators and members of the university’s Board of Trustees, along with representatives from Volusia County govern-

ment and the firms performing the construction work.

At the podium, Elizabeth Skomp, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, followed with words of thanks regarding the generosity and vision of the Browns, as well as the promise of tomorrow for students.

“Taken together, Brown Hall and a renovated Sage Hall will create a powerful science-focused complex that comprises unique spaces to promote experiential learning, plenty of collaborative spaces for students, enhanced faculty grant-seeking potential, and expanded resources for students in the areas of pre-health and health-professions advising,” Skomp said.

President Emerita Wendy B. Libby recalled the day she and Provost Noel Painter first visited the Browns to discuss possible new giving opportunities. She remembered the date: Sept. 29, 2017.

There were four proposals. The Browns, of Ormond Beach, indicated a willingness to “do something,” but at a later time. That day came the following spring.

As good fortune for Stetson would have it, Cici Brown, a trustee, chaired a facilities committee meeting and heard about plans for a new science center that would

cost $18 million. The original cost was believed to be $15 million.

Ultimately, the Browns agreed to $18 million, announced on April 9, 2018.

“I had never met a donor who gave more than I asked for, except Hyatt and Cici Brown,” Libby said.

Then it was time for ceremonial photos — with shovels and more smiles from the leading principals who made Brown Hall happen.

Afterward, in characteristic style, Cici Brown thanked others for making the effort to attend the ceremony.

“It’s been a long time coming and it’s going to happen,” she said.

“And we’ve had the best team to put this together.”

Hyatt Brown, in his own thoughtful and lighthearted manner, said the dollars weren’t a gift, but instead an investment in Stetson, where he has served as a trustee since 1981. “[Cici and I] don’t make contri-

butions. We make investments,” he said, pointing to the eventual returns of “better education for those who are coming in the future.”

“The nice thing about Stetson is that it is, and it is going to be even more, successful in the future,” Hyatt said. “So, the people who are products of this educational institution are going to be proud that they went to Stetson.”

Roellke closed the ceremony by calling the day “very momentous in Stetson University’s history.”

“The Cici and Hyatt Brown Hall for Health and Innovation is a big, big deal,” Roellke said. “It is a big deal for Stetson. It is a big deal for DeLand. It is a big deal for Volusia County. It is a big deal for the state of Florida. And, of course, it is a huge deal for our students and our faculty who are going to occupy this first-rate facility to solve some of our most pressing challenges.”

‘There he goes again’ Former Ormond Beach mayoral candidate opposes police station relocation

In the Observer’s May 27 edition, there’s an article highlighting our mayor’s desire to revisit a feasibility study for construction of a new police department. My fellow citizens, with respect to our mayor’s position regarding the need for a new police building, I am compelled to evoke Ronald Regan’s famous line from his 1980 presidential debate: “There he goes again.”

There he goes again — cities across America are calling out for policing reform. But, while we need to be ensuring our Ormond Beach Police force’s sworn officers have the training, personnel and innovative technology resources needed to implement community policing, our mayor is calling for a new building.

There he goes again — focusing on bricks and mortar and developers’ interests, and not the real issues. As the article indicates, the police chief is in agreement for the need for a new facility. Let’s not forget that the chief serves at the pleasure of the commission — so of course he will support having a new building.

There he goes again — prioritizing developers’ interest and not working to maintain a stable law enforcement work force and presence in our city.

There’s a retention-rate/turnover issue for sworn officers in Ormond Beach. I have per-

sonally spoken with several frontline officers. They’re not wanting a new police station; they’re wanting to reduce turnover by having salaries and benefits that are comparable to other county and local city jurisdictions.

There he goes again — with a small fortune already paid to a consultant, our city’s mayor is pushing the City Commission to move ahead with plans to relocate the police station from its central location on West Granada Boulevard. Relocation of our police station building would not only be a disservice to our city’s beachside and center-city residents, it would present a logistical problem for our police officers. On a ride-around with an officer, I learned that our city’s police officers at the end of shift have to refuel their police cars, themselves, at the city’s Public Works facility on Orchard Avenue.

There he goes again — regarding the costs. As reported, the projected costs for a new “combined use” building would be $34.9 million; while fixing the existing building would cost $500,000.

That’s not “new math” that’s fiscally irresponsible, but maybe not to developers anxious to acquire the existing police department property on Granada for further commercial development.

Dear Editor: At the June 1 City Commission meeting, Rob Littleton explained he had pulled the airport runway agenda item for public discussion only because he “did not want it to seem this item was being railroaded through.”

Sounds like he believes public hearings are only for show, with citizen voices tolerated only to keep up appearances.

Pause demolition of Union Church Dear Editor: On June 10, I emailed the mayor and commissioners endorsing a six-month delay in the demolition of the historic Union Church at 56 N. Beach Street first proposed by Ormond MainStreet over two months ago. I presented my thoughts, which included the following reasons in support of a pause: Why the rush to demolish?

Since community focus on the church issue was overshadowed by the pandemic, primary interest was selfpreservation in many respects.

Now, our community is in a better position to address the issue.

A fundamental issue is what is best for our community: Is it better to raze the church for a parking lot to enhance developer and business interests at the expense of sacrificing some of our history? This linkage is certainly evidenced by the adjacent AndersonPrice Building, the nearby Bailey Riverbridge Gardens (which contains the historic Pilgrims Rest Primitive Baptist Church), the Casements, and

new air conditioning system.

Citizens were also told the current police station site was flood-prone and unsuitable as a command center during weather emergencies.

Well, not too long ago the City Commission approved construction of a gas station with underground gas storage on Granada in this same floodplain.

It doesn’t make sense, but there he goes again — the current 20-year-old police station building is far from becoming obsolete, with a state-of-the-art indoor firing range and extra space that became available when the city eliminated the dispatch center and outsourced to Volusia County to provide that service.

The current police building site has never flooded, and all city buildings require regular upgrades of their HVC systems.

Some months ago, in a radio interview, a city commissioner revealed a more probable reason for the police station relocation proposal when he touted the current site as a great opportunity for commercial development that would enhance the downtown.

The police station generates almost zero traffic, but a commercial center so close to U.S. 1 would add greatly to traffic at one of the most problematic intersections in the county.

It seems clear that our mayor and City Commission continues to divert citizens’ tax dollars to advance the agendas of commercial interests.

Moving the police station is a very costly, bad idea.

History and culture-oriented people will attest to the enhancement of quality of life issues, which also have great economic value. One letter writer in last week’s Observer made the point that many churches in our country are repurposed for other uses.

With the church situated in a choice location next to the Halifax River, is it prudent to undervalue the use of this location with a parking lot?

While it appears that additional parking will be more desirable in the future, the issue seems to be moreso location. When additional parking becomes necessary, options to consider are exploring potential use of the properties west of the church and even converting the city-owned Lincoln Avenue Park into a parking lot.

Has the best use of the church and/or property been evaluated by an independent urban planner entity, free of any governmental, development, or political pressure?

Have the repair costs for the church been developed independent of any direct or indirect governmental, development, or political influence?

that the intentions behind wanting to examine the need for a new facility for our officers has sinister implications is not only just wrong, it is insulting. This is not about developers’ interests and never has been. It is about the safety and quality of life of our police force and the future of their training and work space needs, which are still being assessed.

Our growing police and fire departments deserve an emergency operations facility that reflects that with the space to accommodate all of their needs.

As a citizen who strongly believes in our police department and as a part of a commission that continues to focus budgeting dollars on public safety, it seems like something worth talking about. That’s Ormond Beach; that’s who we are.

I wouldn’t be doing my job as mayor to just dismiss a study that revealed: “The total cost of renovating existing facilities would be upwards of half-amillion dollars and still will not meet the needs of its personnel, nor will it meet FEMA standards for an EOC.” Due to lack of space at the current police station, the men and women of our police department currently sleep in campinglike conditions during an EOC activation, on small camp cots with limited space for the entirety of the storm.

I appreciate Mr. Bridger’s opinion as a citizen and have noted it accordingly with our plans for future public outreach.

One can easily recall the indomitable group that was formed to preserve the Casements, which is such a quintessential part of the quality of life in our community.

f you could spend a semester of school at sea, would you?

For one Seabreeze High School rising sophomore, the answer was easy. Of course she would.

Hunter Moody, of Ormond Beach, knew nothing about sailing when she signed up to spend almost three months aboard topsail schooner Harvey Gamage for the Sailing Ships Maine Spring Semester at Sea program earlier this year. The academic program by the nonprofit offers math and nautical science, environmental history, maritime literature and other courses for its high school trainees. Under the direction of Capt. David Goldman and Capt.

Pamela Coughlin, the 10 trainees completed a 2,500-nautical-mile sailing expedition that took them around the eastern coast of the U.S. “I’m the type of person if there’s an opportunity or anything like that, then I would just

do it,” Hunter said. “I’m very adventurous. I just never really thought there was a program like that, but once I heard about it, I was like, ‘I really want to do that.’”

She learned about the program from her aunt, who lived on sailboat for three years. On March 12, Hunter and her fellow trainees stepped aboard the Harvey Gamage.

“Every member of the crew— including the trainees — has had an opportunity to feel the joy of coming together as a cohort or pod that allows them to work together on a tall ship in the same way that people have for centuries,” said Coughlin in a press release. “We took an extremely cautious approach and it worked.”

LIFE AT SEA

On an average day at sea, the trainees all had different watches to perform. During their watch, they would log the weather and engineering details about the ship.

When docked, they would often visit museums and parks and observe nature in its untouched state, something Hunter said is a rare sight to see.

From wild horses on Cumberland Island in Georgia to seeing the mountains appear on the coastline, Hunter said the sights rendered her speechless. It was beautiful, she said.

One day, she remembers, they visited a swimming hole in Maine, and the water was a chilling 40 degrees. They had the opportunity to swim in it.

“That’s one of the things that I’m so glad I did, but it was very cold,” Hunter said.

She also celebrated her 15th birthday aboard the Harvey Gamage. The cook baked her a cake, and the other trainees made paper decorations and planned a party for her, all the while trying to keep it secret aboard the 131foot schooner. It was a calm day at sea. They played music on the

deck and danced. Hers was one of three birthdays celebrated during the expedition.

Though she was missed at home, her father Brad Moody said he knew that Hunter was enrolled in a good program.

‘BEST TIME IN MY LIFE’

The Harvey Gamage returned to Portland Harbor in Maine on June 2, and Hunter returned home.

While she can’t say she would live in a sailboat for years like her aunt, she said she will miss life at sea. Thankfully, the program has kept a blog of all the dispatches written by trainees during the semester, detailing events like the “Schooner Olympics” and seeing the Statue of Liberty at sunrise.

One day, Hunter said, she wants to work in a field that involves a lot of travel. A world photographer, perhaps.

For now, there are a few things Hunter said she will take away from this experience: the bonds made with the other trainees, the sights they saw together and the hard work they all put in.

“As one of the captains said, it was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, but it was also the best time in my life,” she said. “It was one of the things he said a lot.”

On Thursday, June 10, Holland Financial, Inc., a locally owned financial services company, donated $5,000 to American Legion Post 267 in Ormond Beach through its PlanStronger Together initiative.

“The American Legion sponsored and supported me when I was part of the Boys’ State program as a high-school senior in 1986,” said David Holland, founder and CEO of Holland Financial.

“It’s only fitting that I can give back to them today.”

PlanStronger Together is the firm’s charitable giving program, which supports local public service organizations through monetary donations and in-kind services. The donation to the American Legion was the first contribution presented this year, with a target of $20,000 allocated in total for the program.

Holland Financial is starting its 25th year of operations in July 2021.

QUILTS FOR VETERANS The Racing Fingers Quilt Guild of Ormond Beach makes and donates redwhite-and-blue “honor” quilts to the Veterans Court of Volusia County.

The guild was invited to make these quilts by Remembering Vets, which presents the quilts to the graduates who complete the court’s program. Linda Derryberry, the manager of the guild’s honor quilt program, said that a special graduation ceremony was held on June 4 for two graduates and for many who graduated with COVID-19 restrictions in place.

“It was a wonderful occasion, celebrating the men and women who had done the hard work and gotten back on the right track, the military personnel we had lost in wars, and the veterans each of us lost,” Derryberry said. “There were tears a few times, and laughter, and a recommitment to what everyone does to help those veterans who need us.”

Ormond Beach native Brian Kelley, of the Florida Georgia Line, is releasing his debut solo album on June 25.

According to a press release, Kelley’s “Sunshine State of Mind” album consists of 17 tracks and is inspired by his “open ocean and white sand way-of-life.”

“They say write what you know and this is the first time I really wrote for me,” said Kelley in the press release. “These songs are my babies, y’all.

This project came from a real place — my experiences as a kid in Florida, getting away, and finally moving back — and it’s just been a very life-giving thing for me. I hope fans get to know a little more about me, hear my voice, and that ‘Sunshine State of Mind’ takes you on a dreamlike vacation as soon as you hit play. Welcome to Season One.” Kelley co-penned and coproduced the project alongside Corey Crowder. The album is now available for preorder.

State Education Board backs controversial history guidelines DeSantis has made a major issue of targeting critical race theory, which is based on the premise that racism is embedded within American society and institutions.

Backing Gov. Ron DeSantis’ campaign against critical race theory, the State Board of Education on Thursday, June 10, approved a rule that places controversial guidelines on the way U.S. history is taught in public schools.

The board, meeting in Jacksonville, voted after members of the public squared off on the rule, with some saying it would whitewash history and others saying it would prevent Marxist theory from being taught in Florida classrooms.

DeSantis has made a major issue of targeting critical race theory, which is based on the premise that racism is embedded within American society and institutions. He appeared by video at the beginning of Thursday’s meeting to urge board members to approve the rule.

“We need to be educating people, not trying to indoctrinate them with ideology,” DeSantis said.

But Ben Frazier, president of the Northside Coalition of Jacksonville, said the plan is a “Republican political propaganda campaign” and said teachers need to be able to teach the truth about slavery and other racial issues.

The rule, in part, says teachers “may not define American history as something other than the creation of a new nation based largely on universal principles stated in the Declaration of Independence.”

It also says teachers facilitating discussions can’t “share their personal views or attempt to indoctrinate or persuade students to a particular point of view” that is inconsistent with state standards.

Before giving final approval Thursday, the board adopted additions that, in part, included references to instruction on the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. Also, the additions more specifically addressed that critical race theory should not be taught.

Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran supported the changes proposed by board member Tom Grady, saying they would help provide clarity to teachers.

“It’s a great, transparent way for teachers to understand exactly what this board is saying and to be able to read it and to know they are protected,” Corcoran said.

Opponents of the rule argued that it is designed to prevent teachers from giving a full picture of issues such as slavery, lynching and segregation. Speaker Wells Todd said the rule was an attempt to censor teachers.

“Teaching the facts will bring the country together, not divide the country,” Todd, a member of groups such as the Jacksonville Progressive Coalition, told the board. “And the only reason that I can see that y’all don’t want that to happen is because you are ashamed of the history.”

he high school girls’ 6v6 soccer league kicked off on Saturday, June 12 at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.

Organizer Jim Lundy welcomed four area teams to the soccer fields: the Seabreeze Sandcrabs, DeLand Bulldogs, Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs and Pine Ridge Panthers.

A 6v6, or 6-a-side, game consists of six players per team on the pitch at one time as opposed to the maximum of 11 in regulation games. It is a fast-paced, strategy-based game that is a welcome change for the players. Rules are modified to accommodate the field size. In Saturday’s games, no slide tackling was allowed and offsides does not exist in 6v6 soccer.

“This is why I do this,” Lundy said. “The girls do so much, all the time but this is a chance for them to do something fun and different in their sport. Once they figure it out, it gets competitive.”

The FPC Bulldogs said they are always ready to play. Coach Pete Hald said his team does not practice for this league, but they do meet.

“We are in the weight room for 90 minutes [three times a week],” Hald said. “On Wednesday nights we meet to play indoors and usually have about 30 girls. Last Thursday was our first night of free play and there were about 20 girls that showed up.”

Teams will play doubleheaders beginning Saturday, June 19, followed by two additional game days to establish seeding for the league tournament later in the summer.

Ronald “Ron” Allan Hertel, Jr. announced that he has recently launched his own law firm, Hertel Legal PLLC. The firm is located at 140 S. Atlantic Ave., Suite 201, Ormond Beach, in the former five-story Security First Insurance building.

Hertel graduated from the Florida International University College of Law in 2006, launching his legal career in downtown Miami by litigating cases such as cruise line dissolution, multimillion dollar probate/trust litigation, and international shipping disputes. In 2009, he returned to Flagler County with his wife and first child. He rose to become managing partner of the civil litigation department of the largest law firm in Flagler County.

rmond Beach manufacturer Future Foods Enterprises has recently expanded its distribution to a national level, and leading the helm is a celebrity chef that has been featured on several culinary reality shows.

Chef Robyn Almodovar joined Future Foods and its People and Our World plant-based protein product line as its corporate chef seven months ago. Future Foods is now distributing its product through Dot Foods, which according to a press release, sells to approximately 4,100 distributors in the food industry.

With more people changing the way they consume proteins, and with more public interest in the plant-based industry, Almodovar said this is the direction culinary arts is heading.

“When I found out about Future Foods and PAOW, I said, ‘Wow, I am far from a vegan, or a vegetarian, way far — the complete opposite — so this is a great change for me to go to,’” Almodovar said.

I didn’t. I’ve always known that I liked to cook. I didn’t know I wanted to be a chef until late informercials on Le Cordon Bleu when I was in cosmetology school kept on going when I was 24, and I was like, “Maybe this is a calling.”

I know that the way Future Foods pumps my passion is because this is something new and exciting. I’m able to see how this product is taken from a soy bean and crushed down into a powder and mixed with two other ingredients to form an amazing product.
