BRIEFS Ormond Hotel damaged by fire Two rooms in a hotel in Ormond Beach were damaged after a fire broke out on Monday, May 31.

The Ormond Beach Fire Department responded to Ocean East Resort Club at 867 S. Atlantic Ave. at 7:40 p.m. after a witness reported seeing a fire in a trash can, which spread to nearby rooms. Guests were evacuated from their rooms as fire was extinguished. It is suspected that the fire was due to discarded smoking materials deposited into plastic trash bins.

Residents oppose runway extension

No hope for Union church building?

The Ormond Beach Municipal Airport runway extension project took one step forward after the City Commission unanimously approved a work authorization at its meeting on Tuesday, June 1, for consultants to prepare a new environmental assessment, that will cost the city $45,000.

In 2018, the city received funding from the Federal Aviation Administration to complete an EA to extend the runway 1,000 feet to the west.

Now that the city is planning for only a 600-foot extension in that direction, since staff was unable to procure easements for the original project, a supplemental assessment is needed.

The item was initially placed in the meeting’s consent agenda, which would have barred public comment, but Commissioner Rob Littleton pulled it, and eight people spoke — five against and three for, though there were at least a dozen residents present who opposed the extension.

Pineland Trail resident Mike Rogers questioned why the FAA would decline to fund the SEA, when the agency funded the first one. He also referenced a recent email from the city’s consultants, Hoyle,

Though citizens continue to plead that the city reconsider demolishing the existing church building at 56 N. Beach St., it is unlikely the City Commission will reconsider it’s 3-2 vote to build a parking lot in its place.

At the commission meeting on Tuesday, June 1, Commissioner Dwight Selby asked City Attorney Randy Hayes what the protocol to reconsider the vote would be like.

Seeing as he and Mayor Bill Partington both voted against the demolition, neither are allowed to bring the matter back up. The motion to reconsider would have to come from one of the yes votes: Commissioners Troy Kent, Rob Littleton and Susan Persis.

Hayes confirmed that, since a contractor has already been selected for the project, reversing the vote would complicate matters. Partington said the decision on the demolition has been made, but that the city should abide by the same building standards it requires and not construct a shell parking lot.

The airport runway 9/27 extension projects is moving forward.

Tanner and Associates, asking two environmental specialists to help them create justification for the SEA. “Maybe it’s just me, but if your own consultants have a hard time justifying it, maybe you should consider not doing it at all,” Rogers said.

Rogers also brought up the 400-foot extension of the runway to the east, which is part of the same 2015 Airport Master Plan update option that includes the 600-foot extension to the west.

The city didn’t address whether this remains a future intent. Notably, the master plan update states the option “creates significant environmental impacts to the east of the airport and is the most expensive alternative,” estimating costs at $6.5 million. An east extension would also require Airport

Road to be realigned.

The commissioners did, however, clear up that commercial airliners would not use the airport, a rumor they said was spreading on social media. Commissioner Dwight Selby also said city staff should not be “attacked” over the extension.

“You’re just doing your jobs and for people to besmirch your reputations, it’s not appropriate,” Selby said.

Resident Mike Jiloty, a president of a local marketing consulting firm, said he could attest to the benefits of having an airport. In fact, Team Volusia actively promotes the Ormond airport, he said.

“It’s an important port of entry for our community and I think it will play an increasingly important role in the evolution of Ormond Beach,” Jiloty said

“Growth needs to be productive. It needs to add to the community, not drain.”

Plantation Oaks preliminary plat The City Commission also unanimously approved a preliminary plat for Plantation Oaks’ Phase 1A. This consists of 121 singlefamily lots on 100.91 acres, according to city documents.

A final plat will later come before the commission for another vote.

spoke of courage, pride, determination, selflessness, dedication to duty and integrity — all qualities he said were fundamental for those in military service.

“On this day, we remember the fallen and the liberties and freedoms we enjoy thanks to the sacrifices of so many generations of men and women made on our behalf,” said McKittrick, an Ormond Beach Vietnam War veteran who served from 1968 to 1994.

This year’s celebrations may look a little different, with fewer public events held, but McKittrick said that, while fun, sometimes the activities cause them to lose sight of what Memorial Day is all about: a somber day to reflect on those who lost their lives fighting for America.

He recalled some lost in recent years in Afghanistan and Iraq, and paid tribute to his friend Marine 2nd Lt. James McGarry who lost his life in Vietnam.

It’s up to us, McKittrick said, to keep their memories alive.

“We are all duty-bound to remember our fallen, to tell their stories, and to care for their families who need our support when struck by tragic loss,” he said.

McKittrick also highlighted the veterans that remain with us today, and said that as a nation, we need to ensure the survivors also get the mental health and medical support they need.

In addition to McKittrick’s remarks, the city event — jointly presented by the Memorial Day Remembrance Committee and American Legion Post 267 —also featured music by the Daytona Beach Concert Band, a wreath laying ceremony, and presentation of American Legion’s Patriot of the Year award. Mayor Bill Partington also issued a proclamation.

“We gather this morning to honor, to remember and to pay our respects,” Partington said. “We honor the fallen and all those who serve, but especially the fallen on this day. We remember their sacrifice, their service and we respect the responsibility that each of us have as Americans to honor their ultimate sacrifice by living the best possible life in order to create a great society.”

said there were a lot of question marks regarding the pandemic, but the church already had the money for the project lined up.

Members had pledged funds in the beginning of the year and remained supportive.

“Our pastor said this is something that we know that we’re supposed to do,” Woods said. Calvary’s pastor is Jim Raley.

Bright colors. A playground. Dedicated classroom spaces. A brand new theater space.

Calvary Christian Center completed its $1.5 million renovation of its Kids Center last fall, and on Saturday, May 29, the church is finally celebrating its grand opening. Where there once stood a large open space with a stage, the church’s former sanctuary, has been evolved into a space to better suit the church’s purpose.

“We just wanted to have a building that looked like it was made for kids,” said Jennifer Woods, Calvary Kids pastor.

The project was a long time coming. The kids center was moved to the current building in 2010 when the new sanctuary was built, and Woods said they were thinking about renovating the building back then. But it wasn’t until four years ago that they began the process. The church broke ground on October 2019.

And then came 2020. Woods

open at that time due to COVID-19, which is why the church decided to wait to celebrate the center’s grand opening. The children are excited, Woods said, since they walk past the indoor playground every Sunday.

Having dedicated classroom spaces has helped with the ministry portion as well, she added.

It adds a more intimate learning environment and lessens distractions.

Children, including Wood’s own, have a hard time going home every Sunday, she said. That’s how she knows they’ve achieved their purpose: building a space that the kids are safe, having fun and can grow their relationship with God. “We can only say, ‘Look what God has done,’ because there’s so many challenges that came with 2020,” Woods said. “But it really brought hope that you could see something beautiful happening in the midst of a lot of crazy things happening.”

$70 million bond? New sales tax?

As the Volusia County Council begins to draft its five-year road program, questions about funding sources arise.

As critical road infrastructure needs increase in Volusia, and officials explore ways to fund them, several members of the County Council expressed interest in pursuing a $70 million bond during a workshop on Tuesday, June 1.

The workshop, centered on infrastructure, outlined future projects such as widening Hand Avenue to four lanes from Clyde Morris Boulevard to Nova Road, replacing the Main Street bridge and widening Taylor Road to four lanes from Forest Preserve Boulevard to Summer Trees Road. Of the 11 identified critical projects, the $6.2 million Hand Avenue widening project ranked third in priority, which was calculated using project cost, road capacity and volume.

Volusia County engineer Tadd Kasbeer told the council that the county plans to present future projects to the public for input to bring back a new five-year road program. If the council decides to pursue a bond to help fund these projects, he said they could get more “buying power” as the money could help leverage grant funds as well. That’s what Volu-

sia did with a $65 million bond in the 2003-2004 fiscal year, and Kasbeer said the county was able to get over $85 million worth of funds for projects.

“Yes, you may have periods where the economy slows down but that actually works to a certain extent in your favor because you have money in the first place, now you’re buying power improves,” he said, adding that impact fee revenue could cover the bond’s burden on taxpayers.

Another option presented to the council was an infrastructure sales tax. A half-cent sales tax referendum failed in May 2019, and officials began discussions to revive it later that fall during meetings by the Roundtable of Volusia County Elected Officials.

The county now estimates the sales tax would have brought in $19 million for the 2021-2022 fiscal year if it had passed.

County Councilwoman Barb Girtman said her district voted for the sales tax, and that aside from a bond, they could also pursue other funding revenue streams.

Councilman Ben Johnson quickly jumped in to state that, if the sales tax is brought back, it needs to be a citizen-led initiative.

“That was one of the biggest problems we had with that,” Johnson said.

Chair Jeff Brower pointed out that many people thought the sales tax revenues would benefit new development rather than fix the existing infrastructure issues.

Wrong or right, that was the perception, he said.

The decision to move management of the ECHO and Volusia Forever programs to the resource stewardship division comes as the county prepares to ramp up both programs now that voters have renewed them for another 20 years.

County Councilwoman Heather Post said that it was important to think about messaging. Telling the citizens they didn’t understand the sales tax is the wrong approach, she explained.

Girtman agreed, and said that clarity will be needed.

“I think it would really take advocacy from the public about what they want.”

NOT QUITE ESCORTED 2:40 a.m. — 600 block of Seabreeze Boulevard Disorderly conduct. A 24-yearold Ormond Beach man was arrested in Daytona Beach after he caused a disturbance, becoming physical with security while frequenting a local establishment.

The man did leave the establishment, but jumped a wall as he did so, engaging security again.

A crowd gathered in the area and there was a struggle by police to detain him.

He was taken to jail.

OBSTRUCTING THE ROAD 9:59 p.m. — Intersection of North U.S. 1 and Airport Road DUI. Police arrested a 39-year-old Palm Coast man who was driving a motorcycle while drunk.

According to his arrest report, police were dispatched to a local gas station after a worker reported that the man was causing a disturbance and threatening employees. He left the gas station on his motorcycle, and was later found by police in the middle of the intersection, with his motorcycle “dumped” in the roadway. The officer spotted an unopened can of beer protruding from his pocket, and would later discover it had been stolen from the gas station. The man told the officerthat he would be “honest” and admitted to having two beers and a shot of liquor while at a bar.

The man failed all the field sobriety exercises. He was taken to jail.

The club’s President-Elect Katie Widdison and her mother Anne lent their time in the village’s kitchen, and as part of the club’s February Service project, the members donated board games and DVDs to Give Kids the World. The club also donated $200 to help the village reopen after the pandemic.

POP-UP ART Ormond Beach artist Hailey Nolin will debut a new collection of four abstract paintings during the Ormond Memorial Art Museum’s pop-up exhibit at 9 W. Granada Blvd., which opens June 1.

“When I started thinking about this collection and the direction I wanted it to go, I wanted to embody the different shades of our Florida waterways while focusing on conservation and beauty,” said Nolin in OMAM’s June newsletter. “Considering both of those topics, I decided to

create these pieces using only water and diluted acrylic paints and mica powders in layers. Each piece barely has any medium on it since so much water has been added, and that’s the whole point.

These paintings embody the thought that beauty can come from even something very little while using resources conservatively.”

Nolin’s goal is to “bring the community together through art and show appreciation for our beautiful waterways.” The exhibition will run through June 28.

T

he Mainland Buccaneers football team traveled to Dewey O. Boster Sports complex in Deltona to face off against the University Titans in the last Volusia-Flagler spring football game Friday, May 28.

The highly anticipated matchup was new Buccaneers head coach Travis Roland’s first time leading the team. The Bucs lost to the Titans, but Roland remains hopeful for the season.

“Glad we got out of the spring game healthy,” said Roland, who is also a Mainland alumnus. “You know, I think we have a very young football team, so we had a lot of guys in their first night starting; hearts are beating outside their shoulder pads. So just happy we got out of here healthy. It’s going to be a fun season.”

he Ormond Beach Middle School girls basketball team defeated Hinson 19-18 in a 20-minute single half game on Monday, May 24.

According to an email, OBMS hosted Hinson for the Eastside playoff. Both teams were were 11-1 going in, having split their two games.

The OBMS team advanced to the county championship game at DeLand High School on Tuesday, May 25.

Titans turned it around the end of the quarter with a 27-yard catch by Noble Thomas Jr. As both teams taunted one another, Roland paced the sidelines calling plays, motivating his players and offering the referees insight to the official rules of the game. It was an opportunity for Roland to start players who would not ordinarily do so and get a feel for his team in a game scenario.

During his postgame pep talk, Roland knew his guys were upset.

“Means it means something to you,” Roland said.

att Graifer, known professionally as The Young Professor, doesn’t like making five-year plans.

“It’s unrealistic,” he said. “If you asked me five years ago, I would have never thought any of this would be happening.”

Graifer is quickly becoming a well-known voice in the local entertainment world, including his new role as emcee of the Daytona Tortugas games.

He was first recognized for his voice when he was in junior ROTC, he said. “They pulled me out and told me I would be the commander for our group,” he said. Later his team entered a national competition, and he took second place.

That was 2004. After JROTC, Graifer was the keynote speaker at his masters graduation, where he gave a speech titled, “Your Playlist for Success.” Embracing public speaking, he became a college professor in exercise sciences — until he was laid off.

By this time, Graifer had a wife and four children to provide for.

To make extra money, he started hosting trivia nights in the area.

Now, it’s a Palm Coast tradition: Every Tuesday at 7 p.m., for the last four years, The Young Professor has been hosting trivia nights at The Brown Dog, as well as other local bars, restaurants and events. While doing these trivia nights he was always told that his voice sounded great and he should get into sports announcing.

“As a simple question to myself, my wife and I wrote down things we wanted to do as a couple, in our home, and in our professions,” he recalled.

“I wrote down on that piece of paper: ‘start announcing in wrestling or sports.’”

Graifer has been a fan of pro wrestling for years, and the wrestling gods repaid him. A few months after he wrote his goal on that paper, an ad was posted by the wrestling school in Daytona Beach. The ad said, “We’re looking for a new ring announcer. You need

to be available on Saturdays, and you can’t suck.”

Graifer was available on Saturdays. He hoped he wouldn’t suck.

“I submitted a tryout video to the local wrestling company, and within days I was asked to come and try out,” he said. “I showed up that Saturday; I walked in 15 minutes before the show, and they gave me the card with all of their names, and they told me to go and get their information, their names and their cities. I did the gig, and afterwards I got paid, which I wasn’t expecting, and they asked me to keep coming back.”

For three and a half years now, Graifer has continued to go back.

This has led to traveling to more shows and trying out for larger, nationally recognized wrestling companies.

Graifer is now a full-time teacher at Matanzas High School, which is where his wife also works.

This season, he is the emcee for the Daytona Tortugas, a minor league affiliate with the Cincinnati Reds.

“This is a massive opportunity for me,” he said, marveling at his good fortune, with apparently a gift for public speaking but no formal training in it. “I’m just some guy that grew up poor, in a not-so-awesome town in New Jersey, moved here, and didn’t really have a plan. I have just found ways to continue using my voice to entertain people.”

HOW TO ASK GOOD INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

Matt “The Young Professor” Graifer has learned some trick for asking good questions, as he has gained experience doing live interviews with pro wrestling stars at regional and national conventions.

1. Walk in overprepared: Do your homework by Googling the interview subject, and prepare more than you think you will need.

2. Fill in the gaps: Don’t just ask the same questions as other interviewers have asked. Contribute something new to the body of knowledge about your subject, through your interview.

3. Interview before the interview: Avoid embarassing moments by reviewing the material with the subject before you go live.

New gym tailored to women opening in The Trails in August Delta Life Fitness members are called the Delta Sisters.

A new gym is coming soon to Ormond Beach.

Delta Life Fitness will be opening this August inside The Trails Shopping Center at 306 N. Nova Road. The operation, according to franchisee Bobby Wise, who will be transitioning from the Daytona location to the Ormond one, has taken the best aspects of U.S. Marine physical training and tailored them to create over 200 workout programs for women.

Delta Life Fitness is “built for women,” Wise said. It originally began with the founders, Josh and Christen Cherry, who are longtime friends of Wise. It was then called Delta Bootcamp and was much more similar to a CrossFit-style gym. As the operation expanded and moved from licensing concept to franchiseowned, the workout regime and

atmosphere have changed substantially.

Now, the fitness center no longer has Olympic lifting and barbells. Rather, the courses are structured with proprietary 30-minute classes, involving four bases and two stations. The stations, torching and toning, refer to high-cardio and heavier weight exercises respectively.

Courses are all instructor-led with an all-female staff. There is also a kid’s room for members to drop off their children while they workout.

Wise described the social benefits of the franchise as well. He mentioned the members, called Delta Sisters, participating in monthly outings at other locations and how close of a bond they form. One of their events is the annual Little Black Dress Gala.

“The girls pick a goal weight, do a six-week challenge with us, and then I rent out the LPGA Country Club and host a formal dining event with DJ and awards ceremony and the ladies show up with their husbands and celebrate all their hard work,” Wise said.

In March, the United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties kicked off the Fill the Gap Match Campaign that challenged the organization to reach a goal of $300,000.

Thanks to the support of hundreds of individual donors, Intracoastal Bank, and Root Organization, the Fill the Gap Match Campaign exceeded the goal and raised over $314,000. Due to the campaign’s success, UWVFC will be increasing its annual funding by nearly $100,000. This money will go toward funding 23 valuable and resourceful programs at 18 agencies within Volusia and Flagler counties.

“It is because of the generous donors and their belief in the impact that the United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties has on our community that we were able to increase our funding to the community this year,” said board chair Kim McBee of Foundation Risk Partners. “Dealing with a pandemic has not been easy for any business, and many of our nonprofits are feeling the strain on their services. This funding will allow these organizations to focus their attentions on providing great quality programs and serving those who need these integral resources.”

The 2021-2023 grant cycle opened in November 2020 and closed in March 2021. Twentyfour agencies submitted a Letter of Intent and all were invited to submit a proposal for funding.

applications in the process for a total of $2.221 million in requests.

All applications are reviewed by the Community Impact Cabinet, a group of subject area experts with knowledge in fields related to the United Way’s focus areas of Education, Financial Stability, and Health. The volunteers review the applications individually and then score them as a team based on five main categories: quality, alignment, accountability, systems change, and social return on investment. Based on the team reviews, the CIC recommends a slate of programs for funding to the UWVFC Board of Directors. For the 2021-23 grant cycle, the UWVFC Board of Directors approved funding for 23 programs for a total of $1,237,100.

In the most recent Community Impact grant cycle (2019-21), 21 programs were funded for a total of $1.144 million.

Daytona Beach area home sales remained sky high in April.

An analysis of Daytona Beach Multiple Listing Service data by Wyse Home Team Realty showed that 527 existing single-family homes (detached) were sold in the Daytona Beach area with median home sales price of $295,000.

That’s a 45% increase in total home sales and an 18% increase in the median sales price, compared to April 2020, when all but the state’s most essential businesses were shut down to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Total sales volume was up by nearly 68% in year-over-year comparisons.

“Given the situation we were facing during April last year, it’s no surprised we surpassed those numbers in April,” said Daytona Beach Area Realtor Ron Wysocarski, broker and CEO of Wyse Home Team Realty in Port Orange.

“The real estate market continues to move at a frenzied pace in Volusia and Flagler Counties.”

The inventory levels of available homes listed for sale in the Daytona Beach area fell another 1.2% from March to April, according to MLS data. And the number of available homes in April was 46% lower than it was in April last year.

Wyse Home Team Realty also analyzed data for key areas where home buyers shop. The reports show more home buyers closed deals during April in Port Orange, where sales and the median sale price rose. Sales and prices fell slightly in the mainland areas of Daytona and on the beachside.

New Smyrna Beach was home to the highest the median sales price at $422,500.
