Tomoka Oaks golf course sells for $2.6 million

National Police Week 2021

Another golf course is lost in Ormond Beach as local developers closed on the Tomoka Oaks Golf Club property, which sold for $2.6 million.

The property was purchased by businessmen Carl Velie and Ray Barshay, and a third partner, who wish to construct single-family homes. The land is zoned for low density residential, and of the 551 lots in Tomoka Oaks, 178 of them border the golf course.

In an email, Velie said he was familiar with the property, having played tennis at Tomoka Oaks and lived in Ormond for most of his life.

“Obviously, we want to build a project that will reflect positively on the neighborhood,” Velie said.”But at this time, we do not have any specific design criteria or have we determined the number of lots to be developed.”

Jim Rose, a resident of Tomoka Oaks and chairman of the homeowners association golf course committee, said that at this point, their focus is on mitigating the effects of new development in their neighborhood.

The developers are hosting two meetings, at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on May 20, at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center.

A golf course is not an economically viable use of the property, Velie said, and he hopes the meeting allows them to develop in a way that takes concerns into account.

“We believe it is important to hear the thoughts and concerns of our neighbors,” Velie said. “Though we have had a number of meetings with individual residents or small groups of residents, this meeting, before the engineers develop the plan is crucial so that the engineers can incorporate designs that will mitigate as many of the neighbors’ concerns and still produce a viable project.”

Prepare for hurricane season Volusia County is urging residents to prepare for the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season, which starts June 1.

“Being ready for any potential emergency situation is all about making advance preparations,” said Volusia County Public Protection Director Joe Pozzo in a press release. “The time to start planning is before the storm season gets here.

The time to plan is now.”

Preparations include things like developing an evacuation plan, stocking a disaster supply kit and ensuring homes are storm ready.

The 2021 legislative session ended Friday, April 30, with a traditional hanky-dropping ceremony in the fourth-floor rotunda of the Florida Capitol.

Lawmakers took up a wide range of issues during the 60-day session, along with passing a budget for the fiscal year that will start July 1.

Here are 10 big issues from the session:

BUDGET Buoyed by billions of dollars in federal stimulus money and rebounding state tax revenues, lawmakers passed a record $101.5 billion budget for the upcoming year. The budget includes such things as bonuses for first responders, providing services to more people with developmental and intellectual disabilities and addressing effects of rising sea levels. Also, lawmakers scrapped proposed cuts in Medicaid funding for hospitals and nursing homes.

COVID-19 Lawmakers passed a measure aimed at shielding businesses and health-care providers from lawsuits related to people getting sick or dying from COVID-19.

Also, they approved making permanent a ban on COVID-19 vaccine “passports.” Gov. Ron DeSantis in early April issued an executive order to prohibit businesses from requiring people to show they had been vaccinated to gain entry.

EDUCATION As part of a more than two-decade effort by Republicans to expand school choice, lawmakers passed an overhaul of school-voucher programs. In part, the plan would increase an income threshold so that a family of four making nearly $100,000 a year could qualify for vouchers. In higher education, the Senate considered controversial changes in the Bright Futures scholarship program before largely backing away amid an outcry from students and other opponents.

Ten big issues from the 2021 Florida Legislative session ELECTIONS Despite fierce opposition from Democrats, the Republican-controlled Legislature passed a wide-ranging elections bill that includes placing new restrictions on voting by mail.

Supporters said the bill, which addresses issues such as the use of drop boxes for mail-in ballots, is needed to ensure election security and integrity. But Democrats contended that it is designed to place barriers to voting and likened it to measures aimed at Black voters in the Jim Crow era.

INSURANCE After years of debating the issue, lawmakers approved ending Florida’s no-fault auto insurance system. Under the bill, motorists would no longer be required to carry personalinjury protection, or PIP, coverage. They would have to carry bodily-injury coverage. Also, lawmakers approved changes in the property-insurance system, including allowing larger annual rate increases for customers of the state-backed Citizens Property Insurance Corp.

PROTESTS DeSantis quickly signed a controversial law-andorder measure that was sparked by nationwide protests last year after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The law creates a new crime of “mob intimidation,” enhances riot-related penalties and makes it harder for local officials to reduce spending on law enforcement. But opponents said the measure is rooted in racism and would give police too much leeway to arrest peaceful protesters.

WHAT DIED IN SESSION? From abortion restrictions to vacation rentals, many high-profile bills died Friday when the Florida legislative session ended. Here are 10 issues that did not make it through the Legislature.

ABORTION The House overwhelmingly passed a bill that would have prevented doctors from providing abortions that women seek because of tests showing fetuses will have disabilities. The bill about so-called “disability abortions” threatened criminal penalties against doctors, but the Senate did not take it up.

ALIMONY A long-running debate about overhauling Florida’s alimony laws will have to wait at least another year. While the House approved alimony changes, the controversial issue stalled in the Senate.

The proposal, as in the past, sought to eliminate what is known as permanent

TOLL ROADS SOCIAL MEDIA After former President Donald Trump was blocked from Twitter and Facebook early this year, Republican lawmakers passed a plan to crack down on social-media companies. The plan, a priority of DeSantis, includes barring social-media companies from removing political candidates from the companies’ platforms and threatens hefty fines. Critics questioned the bill’s constitutionality and described it as a “big government” move.

TAXES In a major win for business groups, lawmakers passed a plan that will require out-ofstate online retailers to collect sales taxes on purchases made

by Floridians. The roughly $1 billion a year generated by the change will be used to replenish a depleted unemployment trust fund. Later, it will be used to offset a cut in a commercial rent tax. Florida businesses have long argued online retailers enjoyed an advantage because they didn’t collect sales taxes.

Two years after then-Senate President Bill Galvano pushed through a law to build and expand toll roads, lawmakers largely scrapped the plan during this year’s session. That included nixing the idea of building a toll road from Collier County to Polk County. Lawmakers, however, decided to move forward with projects such as extending Florida’s Turnpike west from Wildwood to connect with the Suncoast Parkway.

TRANS ATHLETES After the issue appeared dead in the Senate, lawmakers in the final days of the session passed a bill that would ban transgender female athletes from competing on high-school girls’ and college women’s sports teams. While bill supporters said transgender female athletes could have a physical advantage, opponents said the bill targets youths already at risk for suicide, ostracism and bullying.

HUTSON’S POST-SESSION WRAP UP This session, Sen. Travis Hutson’s Educational Opportunities Leading to Employment bill (SB 366) passed, requiring some students to be covered by workers’ compensation insurance in a work-based learning opportunity. In addition, his bill to increase the minimum age to purchase and possess tobacco and nicotine products from 18 to 21 (SB 1080) was signed by the governor.

Also, the Operation and Safety of Motor Vehicles and Vessels bill (SB 1086), which strengthens protections for springs and allows for easier removal of derelict vessels, also passed. He also secured $400,000 in funding for Volusia County Water resiliency.

DATA PRIVACY Business groups breathed easier Friday with the demise of a bill that would have given consumers more control over personal data collected by companies.

The bill, backed by House Speaker Chris Sprowls, R-Palm Harbor, faced heavy opposition from an army of business lobbyists.

MEDICAL MARIJUANA More than four years after Florida voters broadly legalized medical marijuana, lawmakers let die a proposal that would have limited THC

potency in smokable mairjuana and other cannabis products. THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the main psychoactive component in cannabis.

PENSION SYSTEM An effort by the Senate to overhaul the state retirement system fizzled as it was not taken up by the House. The Senate proposal would have blocked new government employees from enrolling in the traditional pension system and required them to enroll in a 401(k)-style plan.

TERM LIMITS A renewed attempt by the House to impose eight-year term limits on county school board members died in the Senate. The proposal, which has emerged repeatedly in recent years, would have asked voters in 2022 to pass a constitutional amendment to limit the terms of school board members.

UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS After massive job losses

during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Senate backed increasing unemployment benefits from a maximum of $275 a week to $375 a week.

But the House did not take up the proposal, which also faced opposition from Gov. Ron DeSantis.

UNION DUES Public-employee unions staved off attempts by Republican lawmakers to place new restrictions on union dues. The proposals included adding a step in which government employers would have had to confirm with workers that they want dues taken out of their pay before the deductions could start.

VACATION RENTALS Bills aimed at further restricting local governments from regulating vacation rental properties did not make it through the House and Senate. The issue has long been controversial, as cities and counties have fought the additional restrictions on their authority.

Optional school mask policy moves forward The policy, if approved, would be in place in time for summer school.

Following a failed motion to repeal the school district’s face covering policy, the Volusia County School Board voted 4-1 at its meeting on Tuesday, May 11, to advertise amendments that would make masks optional in time for summer school.

School Board member Jamie Haynes was the sole vote against, having made the motion to repeal the policy instead. Since that morning’s workshop, she had expressed that while she favored masks being optional in schools, she did not wish to have a district policy in place.

“I know you made it optional, but I still feel it should have been repealed, and it should have been parental choice,” Haynes said.

“So that’s where I stand on it.”

Haynes initially abstained from the voice vote, unbeknownst to the rest of the board, but during the board members’ final comments, she said she wished to clear up the record that she did not vote for or against advertising the amendments. However, because it was a board action item, and Haynes had no conflicts of interest, she was instructed she needed to cast a vote. She voted against.

ASKING FOR A SIGN 2:15 a.m. — 700 block of South Nova Road DUI. Police arrested a 52-year-old Daytona Beach man after receiving a call that he was slumped over in his car with the horn beeping for over an hour.

The reporting officer found the man sleeping in the driver’s seat of his running vehicle, noting he appeared “sloppy, unbalanced and reeked of consumed alcoholic beverages,” according to the arrest report. While the man completed one field sobriety exercise after he was informed that the reporting officer would be conducting a DUI investigation, the man declined to complete any more beyond that. Seeing as he failed his first exercise, the man was placed under arrest.

Once at the police station, the man declined to speak, but while being transported to jail, asked if he could speak freely. The officer said he was welcome to, and the man said, “You got me, I really did pull over because I knew I shouldn’t have been driving,” according to the arrest report.

The man said he believed he hit a curb and took that as an indicator he shouldn’t be driving.

Graduation ceremonies will be held June 3-6 at the Ocean Center. Health and safety guidelines will be in place, the district states, and all in attendance are required to wear face coverings and socially distance as much as possible.

School Board member Ruben Colon said they have done what the governor and the state’s education commissioner have asked districts to do: Work with the local health departments.

“At the time when [the governor] rescinded everybody’s mandate, he didn’t include schools,” Colon said. “He chose to do that.

The commissioner and the governor could have stricken every mask mandate with the stroke of a pen, and they did not ... leaving us once again in the middle.”

Colon said he is hopeful that COVID-19 conditions will improve as more people get vaccinated, especially now that Pfizer is able to be administered to children ages 12 and up. But, Colon said, if this doesn’t happen, the mask issue will likely resurface.

SPEEDSTER 4:01 p.m. — First block of John Anderson Drive Narcotics. A 30-year-old Daytona Beach man excused his reckless driving to police by saying that his truck was malfunctioning and he was taking it to a repair shop.

Police were flagged down by a

motorist traveling south on John Anderson, who advised that a truck was driving off the road and running stop signs. Police witnessed the driver run a stop sign themselves. The reporting officer estimated the man was driving at between 50 to 60 miles per hour.

Once a traffic stop had been initiated, police noted the man’s pupils looked like pinpoints, and, that he was swaying. When asked for his license, the man said he had one only for business purposes. Police discovered his license was suspended, and that there was no business purpose condition or hardship license under the man’s name.

He did pass the field sobriety exercises, but during a search of his truck, police found two Xanax bars. He was taken to jail.

MIXED EMOTIONS 5:20 p.m. — First block of South Yonge Street DUI. A 56-year-old Ormond Beach woman was arrested after she was involved in a car crash while under the influence.

The woman told police she was fine multiple times, and while the crash investigation was being conducted, would search through her car as if looking for something, though police asked her not to do that. The woman continuously ignored their request and would become very talkative, but her words were mumbled and slurred to the point the reporting officer could not understand her.

She was “very carefree, sleepy, crying and apologetic,” the report states.

The woman admitted to drinking three beers and “some other drinks” while she dropped her family on the beach. She was taken to jail.

‘One big happy family’ First African American Community Celebration held at SONC JARLEENE ALMENAS

Joe Daniels has lived in Ormond Beach since 1939.

Growing up, the African American community was small, but tight-knit. If they weren’t family by blood, they were family by association, and recently, as he reminisced on old days past, Daniels realized that there were many of those family members he hadn’t seen in a long time. Due to the pandemic, some of them were unable to leave their nursing homes, or others, sheltering in place at their homes.

He couldn’t remember a time where the community, particularly those living in the historically-black Sudan and Liberia communities, hadn’t been able to share in each other’s company. He decided that needed to change.

“Ormond Beach, we are one big happy family,” Daniels said.

“We’re unified. We love one

another, we get along fine and we’re just a nice community.”

Daniels, by word of mouth, started gathering individuals to help put together the first African American Community Celebration at the South Ormond Neighborhood Center on Saturday, May 8. They put out flyers, handled transportation needs for the honorees that needed help getting to SONC, and got together a crew to cook lunch.

Mayor Bill Partington also recognized the city’s oldest minister with a proclamation. Apostle

C.R. Freeman, 86, established the Church of Jesus Apostolic Faith at 131 S. Washington St. 42 years ago, making him a pivotal part of the local African American community.

Partington said everyone in Ormond should be aware of the contributions, struggles and history of its black community.

“You have a rich history in Ormond Beach, and that rich history should be celebrated,” Partington said. “That’s the whole purpose of today — that’s why today is a wonderful event.”

My two cents on Tomoka Oaks Dear Editor: I would love to see the Tomoka Oaks Golf Course survive as a golf course or public space. I live in Tomoka Oaks and have been connected to it for more than 50 years.

Unfortunately, the time has passed for that to occur.

The acquisition cost is out of reach. The residents and the association should have been addressing this years ago when the golf course designation expired, and when the zoning changes for development were being done. We were asleep.

The property is the best undeveloped tract of acreage in Ormond Beach. We should recognize that any developer wants to maximize their profit, limit the risk of failure, and loss of investment.

At least two of the investors in this project have deep ties to Ormond Beach, so they have a vested interest that perhaps others would not have.

This project will be part of their legacy. One of them has several businesses here, and the businesses I am familiar with are well managed. So that gives me hope that this project will turn out better than some are projecting.

The traffic issue is not solvable, and will probably result in a traffic light at the entrance of Tomoka Oaks. Shunting

traffic through the existing subdivision should not even be considered, as it would hurt property values, totally change the nature of the neighborhood, and be dangerous for children.

The density of homes allowed is high, and would be out of character with the surrounding neighborhood.

Are there scenarios that would work that could reduce the homes per acre, and still allow the zoned number of living units?

What about using the clubhouse site and some of the land there for three-story townhomes or other forms of multifamily housing? How many multifamily units would it take to get the single family home density down to three per acre and still allow the total number of homes the parcel is zoned for?

Would it be feasible to put utilities underground? This would protect trees and add value to property. Are there suitable areas with trees for small community green spaces that would protect some of the natural features? This would also add value.

The development should be part of the Tomoka Oaks subdivision.

These are the things we should be talking about.

Why a National Day of Prayer?

Dear Editor: Americans don’t need the government to tell them when and how to pray through their National Day of Prayer. Unfortunately, our citizens are told to do just that on the first Thursday of May, every year.

As a result, local governments cross the line and promote NDP religious events and lend their name to endorse them, clearly violating the First Amendment Clause of the separation of church and state.

Religious freedom allows Americans to decide which religious prayers to say —if any — and when to say them. Take government influence out of our religious freedoms. Put an end to the NDP and its task force.

Shift focus to traffic policing Dear Editor: All this talk about development. I see it in carefully worded letters to the editor, walking the thin line between a developer’s entitlement to maximize his or her investment and the obvious negative impact it would have on traffic and infrastructure here in

what was, when I moved here almost 10 years ago, a beautiful and laidback community.

Now Granada Boulevard, off which I live, is very much like Interstate 95. Sirens wail as police and emergency vehicles respond to accidents all day long. Speeding is routine, the norm. Go the speed limit and you are risking your life. Cars and trucks pass you, doing 60 or more. Obey traffic laws, signal lane shifts like the law requires, and you are daring cars and trucks to cut you off.

And believe me, they do.

I thought traffic on Granada might ease up after the snowbirds left, but this isn’t the case.

We have allowed the mindset here in Ormond Beach to devolve into one debate after another about rezoning and allowing further development.

We are being played for fools by our city commissioners, all supported heavily by developers.

We have already lost the fight to overdevelopment, my fellow citizens. It’s time to shift the entire conversation away from further trafficadding consequences to our lost cause and towards the necessary costs it will take to improve policing and pedestrian safety, especially traffic policing.

She is a single mom who dedicates her time to serving on the Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, instructs at the Teen Driver Challenge Program, and recently launched a fellowship of Christian Police Officers.

Mason is known for going above and beyond to assist students at whatever school she is assigned to and creating safe learning environments and positive interactions between herself and students. She regularly fundraises for families in need and can always be found helping her fellow officers or community members.

JANET WOODS is a dedicated volunteer with the 9463 Foundation and South Florida Rest, organizations that

support first responders in Florida. She’s been making personalized quilts and hand delivering them to families of fallen officers in conjunction with the 9463 Foundation as a volunteer for close to ten years. “I don’t think there’s a quilt I make that doesn’t have a tear drop on it,” she says. A retired legal secretary, she moved to Florida ten years ago and ever since she has been volunteering at the foundation and also with South Florida Rest (aka Canteen), an organization that hydrates firefighters and police officers while on call at emergency scenes. “We bring water, Gatorade, snacks and food to first responders who are at the scene of an accident, a fire, a SWAT call or wherever they need us,” she says. When she’s not making quilts or helping hydrate first responders, she’s sewing masks. Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic she made more than 9,300 masks and donated them to police and fire agencies, hospitals and others all over the country with patriotic or specific meaningful fabrics.

BETHANY KEIME is a self-proclaimed heart warrior from Cutler Bay. At 17 years of age, the Florida native was a senior in high school with a promising dance career and her whole life in front of her, when she was diagnosed with the number one killer on school campuses and leading killer of student athletes: hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Her life changed forever when she fatefully learned that hers would be a lifetime of medication, testing, and treatments, including having a defibrillator implanted into her chest. Seven years later, she came to terms with the diagnosis and decided to do something positive about it. She launched the HeartCharged Instagram page to spread awareness, built her own website, and created her own 501C-3 nonprofit, HeartCharged. She puts on community heart screenings, donates defibrillators, and speaks at schools. And she’s even helping to change the law. “We just got a law passed in Florida to get CPR and AED training for high school students, which can prevent death from sudden cardiac arrest,” Keime says. “Next year, we’re working on getting heart screenings for all kids in Florida. Many heart conditions have no recognizable symptoms. With screenings, deaths can be prevented

DREW ROGERS is the Operations Fire Chief at Marion County Fire Rescue (MCFR) in Ocala. A firefighter for 20 years, he’s made it his mission to inspire and mentor others who may be headed down the wrong path. “I joined the fire service from a little bit of shaky background,” Rogers says.

“I wasn’t sure where I was going in life and at times, like a lot of kids, I made some bad choices, but becoming a firefighter changed my life, and I want to do that for others.” He’s been instrumental in operating the mentorship program at MCFR; he secured funding and support to build a 7,000 square foot gym to help cadets stay fit to pass their physical ability tests and for his crew to stay mentally and physically fit; and he works tirelessly with students at the fire career academy to help them find a career path they can stay on for life. “A lot of our chiefs are great at many things – analytics, spreadsheets, power point presentations. For me, the biggest thing I am good at and enjoy the most is building a culture of wellness and community to support our firefighter family in whatever ways possible.”

Kaneshia Stokes, a School Way Cafe employee at Ormond Beach Middle School was celebrated by Volusia County Schools, No Kid Hungry and the Florida Division of Food, Nutrition and Wellness, for recently helping a coworker who was choking. Stokes quickly took action and performed the Heimlich maneuver, saving her coworker’s life.

“I thought I heard a voice that told me to look, and when I looked, she was on the ground,” Stokes recalled. “... I just darted out and did what I had to do.”

Stokes, who has worked for School Way Cafe for the past year and a half, has never been formally trained to perform the Heimlich maneuver, but she is a mom of five. Her youngest child is special needs, and she’s always on high alert for choking hazards.

As someone who is used to helping others, but not being in the spotlight for it, Stokes said the recognition felt overwhelming. From the moment she walked into the OBMS cafeteria, wearing a red cape around her neck as she was greeted by students, Stokes was visibly emotional. She wiped tears from her eyes throughout the entire ceremony.

VOLUSIA TEACHER FINALIST IN STATE Volusia County Schools’ Teacher of the Year has been selected as one of five finalists statewide for Florida Teacher of the Year, a press release announced.

Frank Garaitonandia, the art teacher at Citrus Grove Elementary School in DeLand, became a teacher 16 years ago. He is a graduate of the University of Florida and started teaching at Citrus Grove in 2014. Garaitonandia is a Cuban immigrant who believes “there is no greater creative act than sparking a child’s mind,” according to the press release. He was named VCS Teacher of the Year in January from a field of 71 nominees.

The Florida Teacher of the Year will be announced on July 22 in Orlando.

Gary P. Williamson, 56, passed away on Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at Advent Health Hospital. He was born on June 11, 1964, in Daytona Beach, Fl. He graduated from Seabreeze High School in 1982. Gary was passionate about cooking, working at several local restaurants as a Chef. He worked in construction for many years. He also worked at Igloo Air for 10 years. Most recently, he was employed at Lowe’s for the past year and a half. Gary loved fishing and competing in fishing tournaments.

Gary was predeceased by his parents Eleanor and Richard. He is survived by his sister Colleen Williamson Bradley (Robert), his brother Richard Kerr Williamson III, one niece and three nephews.

or the first time, the Ponce Inlet jetty was home to the 11th-annual May Day Memorial Surf Classic, which took place on Saturday, May 8.

Flagler Beach had always been the location of the event, but the lure of Ponce’s high performance waves and the organizational logistics brought about a change of venue for the event that brings awareness to heart health.

Haley Stephens, the event creator, was 14 when her mother died of heart disease at the age of 48. Stephens’ mom, Dollie Sue Watson, was an intensive care

unit nurse at the Halifax Health Medical Center and had suffered her first heart attack in 1998 at the age of 20. Stephens, at age 18, was still mourning the loss of her mom when she started the competition.

“I knew I could either feel sorry for myself or I could make a difference, and I wanted to make a difference,” Stephens said. “So that was the start of the surf competition. It has turned into this celebration of life and love and community and togetherness, celebrating not only my mom but all of our moms.”

Stephens said that it was an acci-

dent that the surf classic fell on Mother’s Day weekend. She had lost track of the day throughout the years and picked the second weekend in May for her first surf memorial, which ended up being Mother’s Day weekend.

“Without moms, there would be no groms,” event announcer Travis Ajay said. “I have been doing this event for all 11 years and announcing for about 20. I helped Haley get it started. She’s my best friend.”

A total of 106 competitors, increased sponsorship and a whopping $8,586 in fundraising to be donated directly to the Halifax Health Foundation in memory of Dollie Sue Watson were this year’s record breaking numbers in comparison to the event’s previous 10 years. The proceeds are earmarked for the Center for Cardiology.

Professional surfers were sprinkled among the locals competing at the surf classic. Model and “Baywatch” actor Eros Exarhou placed first in the mens pro division while teenager Delaney Spruill placed first in the womens’ pro division. Stephens is also a professional surfer, but she is mom to 2-year-old Mason and went out with the surf moms. Last September, she placed first in the women’s shortboard division at the ESA Easterns Surfing Championships.

“I hope that one day, if Mason would like to surf, I will support him,” Stephens said. “But my reason behind continuing with competitive surfing is to set a positive example for Mason to never give up doing what you enjoy doing and always try your best.”

Mainland sprinter Cydney Wright, who was one of the top sprinters in the area this year, proved that she was also one of the top sprinters in the state after making two podium finishes at the FHSAA 3A track and field championships on May 7.

Wright won the 200m in a time of 23.68 and was third in the 100m in a time of 11.72.

Teammate Isaiah Gordon finished 12th overall in the boys shot put, ending the competition with a throw of 15.01m.

Seabreeze junior Ella Chandler finished third in the girls 800m, crossing the line in 2:14.57. Fellow Sandcrab Tyler Smith competed in the javelin throw, finishing ninth with 43.51m.

For Father Lopez competing in 1A, Victoria Woods finished fifth in the girls high jump after clearing a height of 1.49m.

Seth Augustynowski, Brendan O’Quinn, Colin McDonnell, and Andrew Gazzoli finished eighth in the boys 4x800m relay with a time of 8:25. Augustynowski would go on to finish ninth in the 3200m with a time of 9:49, a new personal best.

Prior to the pandemic, The Salty Mermaid had to close for a month after Hurricane Dorian.

While the storm didn’t directly impact the shop, the front window shattered as Shumate and a few others were boarding it up in preparation. They had to move all the art to the back of the shop, and after the storm, wait a month for the glass to be replaced.

A resin artist herself, Shumate said one of her favorite things about coming to work is being surrounded by beauty. She doesn’t have a long commute either — she lives a few houses away from her shop.

The Salty Mermaid has become more than just a business though.

Shumate said that, in the past two years, she has created many friendships with her featured artists and regular customers. And, she still thinks Ormond-by-theSea is the “most perfect place.”

“Everybody that comes in has a smiling face,” Shumate said. “They always say this is their happy place and they can just walk in and instantly feel stress free. It’s just a really nice way to go to work.”
