City votes 3-2 to demolish church property

No change to VCS mask policy

Three years after purchasing the former Ormond Beach Riverside Church property at 56 N. Beach St., the Ormond Beach City Commission has doubled down on its decision that the church must be demolished.

Despite Ormond MainStreet asking for a six month grace period to explore ways to restore the 1976 structure, and both Salty Church and Congregation B’nai Torah expressing interest in the building, the commission voted 3-2 at its meeting on Tuesday, May 4, to tear down the building and construct a new shell parking lot for 59 vehicles. Mayor Bill Partington and Commissioner Dwight Selby voted against, wishing instead to pursue avenues to save the building.

Selby said that way, they could see if, as a community, they could reimagine how the property could be used.

The city purchased the property, which includes a riverside parcel, in 2018 for $729,000. The parking lot is estimated to cost an additional $125,579, according to city documents.

YEARS

he Halifax River Yacht Club is steeped in tradition — both old and new — and on May 15, members will celebrate its 125th anniversary.

The club boasts being the oldest continuously operating yacht club on the East Coast that has kept its original location. It’s at 331 S. Beach St., having been founded in 1896 in Daytona Beach. From a champagne toast accompanied by a harpist, to dinner and jazz, the anniversary celebration will be the club’s biggest event of the year.

After 2020’s coronavirus impacts, being able to celebrate the club’s anniversary made Commodore Terri Parsons say, “Hallelujah.”

“I’m just very, very proud to be a part of it — a tiny little snippet of it,” Parsons said.

Parsons, a member since 2005, has been at the helm of the yacht club since Jan. 1, as commodores all serve one-year terms.

She is the third female commodore since the club was founded, though Parsons said she doesn’t pay that much mind. A big part of the anniversary celebration is paying tribute to all the commodores that pushed the club forward, in times of war, sickness and economic downturns.

All living commodores, including 2020’s commodore, Chris Brown, will be lined up in the lobby on May 15 to greet members.

The yacht club is about growing leaders, said Kelly Wagner, past first lady and president of the Halifax River Yacht Club Commodore’s Association Associates.

Wagner, of Ormond Beach, said her role is to embrace and support new commodores, just like she and her husband, Glenn, were when he was commodore in 2016.

“It’s significant having a female leader during COVID times, and still has her passion for the club, it’s very touching,” Wagner said.

125 YEARS OF HISTORY

The club’s creation began on Jan. 8, 1896. A group of 13 sailing enthusiasts met, with Sumner H. Gove presiding as president.

It was on that day that the men unanimously decided they would name their club the “Halifax River Yacht Club,” and they elected their first commodore: Victor Vuillaume.

The Halifax River Yacht Club boasts being one of the oldest on the East Coast.

who gave permission in March 1896 to construct a pier and connect it to the seawall in front of his property. The pier was completed later that year, and the first meeting in the new clubhouse was held on Feb. 10, 1897.

The club’s membership continued to meet in that clubhouse, which gained new additions and was renovated over the 110-year period, until a new clubhouse was built in 2007 on the land that previously was the parking lot for the club. The original clubhouse was removed afterward and replaced with additional docks.

But, the club is more than just a building, as its history wall highlights.

The majority of its original members lived and worked within a few blocks of the clubhouse, and by the turn of the century, club activities happened year-round.

Members met for boating purposes of course, but also to socialize. They held banquets and balls in the Opera House across Beach Street, picnicked at Silver Beach and Ponce Inlet, and cruised the Tomoka River.

Membership increased after World War II in the late 1940s and 1950s, and a women’s restroom was finally added in 1959.

While membership fluctuates every month, April having seen an increase of 10 members, Parsons said they do have 91 members just from Ormond Beach.

Some notable members of the early days include builder Charles Ballough, businessman Charles Burgoyne, Procter and Gamble co-founder James N. Gamble.

A FAMILY

The club remains active in the community. Every year, it raises funds for charity through its annual Christmas boat parade and hosts toy drives. The Commadears, a group of women within the club, also collect items to donate to the Beacon Center, an organization that helps victims of domestic abuse.

The club doesn’t forget about its own either. Parsons said that, even though the yacht club closed for a few months due to COVID-19, the membership raised enough funds to make sure none of their staff members missed a paycheck.

“There’s a lot of camaraderie, and that’s what I’m most proud of,” Parsons said.

The club is always looking to grow its membership, particularly among the younger crowd, which is one of the reasons Parsons is hoping to start a new singles group and expand their business outreach.

The Halifax River Yacht club is a family, Wagner said. No boat necessary.

When she joined in 2005, she and her husband didn’t know anyone in the area. Recalling the inclusion she felt when they joined brings Wagner to tears. She remembers the joy she felt when, at her first ball, she was told that they weren’t alone — that they did have friends.

“This is a place where people feel like they’re family,” Wagner said. “We don’t always agree, but we agree on one thing: our beloved yacht club.”

After two months of citizens arguing for and against shortterm rentals before the Volusia County Council, members will make a decision on whether or not to amend the county’s ordinance at the council’s next meeting on Tuesday, May 18.

The council was supposed to appoint two more members to its newly formed Short Term Rental Advisory Committee at its meeting on Tuesday, May 4, but the council voted 6-1 to eliminate the short-lived committee instead.

County Councilman Ben Johnson made the motion, saying that the committee was supposed to help in case the short-term rental bills passed legislature. However, the House and Senate bills never made it out of committee, and he was ready to make a decision.

“We’ve heard arguments pro, con, all the way around,” Johnson said. “... I myself don’t really need to hear the same arguments again the next time.”

The current ordinance requires a minimum of 30-day rentals for single family homes and condos in county residential zones. If the council decides to amend it at its next meeting, a new ordi-

nance would have to go through the Planning and Land Development Regulation Commission before coming to the council for approval.

For the past few meetings, several Bethune Beach residents, all clad in matching green shirts, have ardently spoke against short-term rentals in their neighborhoods. Ricky Schrader said there is a reason the prior council referred to these rentals as hotels and motels — there is an unpredictability to account for when living next to one.

“When people choose to live in a neighborhood, they are seeking a certain way of life,” Schrader said. “One filled with a spirit of community, where people get to know and trust each other. People have a sense of security when they know who lives next door to them.”

But short-term rental owners have not yet given up. Steve Murray, who owns a vacation rental in Bethune Beach, said he paid $45,000 in property taxes last year in addition to $10,000 in tourist development taxes, and that short-term rentals play a critical role in Florida’s tourism industry.

“You can remove homes from the supply in Volusia, but the demand will remain, and until the supply is replenished, tourists will take their money to the other counties where they are appreciated,” Murray said.

Lawsuit: Ormond man’s contract wasn’t renewed because he warned schools about software costs

A lawsuit between the Volusia County School Board and a former school district employee over claims of unlawful retaliation is still active in court.

Alex Kennedy, an ex-assistant director of applications and infrastructure at Volusia County Schools, was informed his position was going to be eliminated in May 2020 after 13 years with the district. Kennedy, an Ormond Beach resident, believes this was retaliation for speaking out against Oracle Fusion, the new financial system the district has been working to implement since 2017 after the School Board voted to approve a $6.2 million agreement with CherryRoad Technologies.

Kennedy said he knew early on that the software implementation would run over budget and that staff would have a lot of difficulty with it, and he continuously advised his district superiors of this until his termination.

“It’s just shameful when you have someone like myself saying, ‘This is going to cost you millions and millions dollars more than you expect,” Kennedy said. “‘Why

would you do this?’ And then they don’t renew my contract.”

DISTRICT RESPONSE

VCS declined to comment due to the pending litigation, but district spokesperson Kelly Schultz said in an email that “the Oracle system was properly vetted and approved of by the School Board in 2017 as the most appropriate ERP system available to meet the Request For Qualifications.”

The Oracle Fusion Enterprise Resource Planning software implementation’s first phase was originally scheduled to go live on July 1, 2018, though that didn’t take place until July 1, 2019, district documents show. The second phase of implementation was planned to go live on Jan. 1, 2019, but as of now, this has not happened. An update by the district at its Jan. 26 meeting pushed the go live date to July 1.

Barring one-year renewal agreement costs with CherryRoad Technologies, the district has spent over $2 million on change orders since 2018.

Recently, the district’s chief financial officer’s name was removed from the VCS website.

Schultz said VCS does not comment on personnel matters, but that “this is the time of year when decisions are made regarding appointments and non-reappointments.”

2020, he asked the School Board that his complaints of whistleblower retaliation be heard by the Division of Administrative Hearings, but his request was refused.

He filed the lawsuit on Aug. 31, 2020, and on Oct. 21, attorneys representing the School Board filed a motion to dismiss his complaint “for lack of subject matter jurisdiction and failure to state a claim upon which relief can be granted,” according to court documents.

Then, on Nov. 10, 2020, the School Board approved an investigative report by GrayRobinson — the same firm currently representing the board in the lawsuit, though under different attorneys — which concluded that the School Board did not engage in “waste, fraud or financial mismanagement” as Kennedy claimed to the Department of Education, who forwarded his complaint to the to the school board for investigation.

Kennedy said he spoke out against the Oracle system because his staff were faced “with a daunting task” in trying to make the software work. The right thing to do would have been to bring in a third-party auditor to look at the system and speak with the staff members themselves who are struggling to implement it, without fear of retribution.

“My concern is my case gets dismissed or it doesn’t go further, and it continues to enable them to do this to other people,” Kennedy said. “That’s the big thing.”

L ETT ERS Saving Ormond Beach Union Church Dear Editor: Thank you so much for writing the article about the Ormond Beach Union Church. Remembering that OBUC was the first Protestant church on the west side of the river and that her many years of preaching religion to the many old timers of our area paid off for our community.

Sadly, many of the old timers have passed on now, so they cannot give thanks to those of us who are still here, enjoying the church’s existence. Now, I only hope that the “powers that be” will read all the past history about OBUC and include it in whatever they decide to do to the church. The church would be great as a veteran museum in that area, instead of where that museum was moved to in Holly Hill, where few people even know of it.

Just think — since the city is allowing the MacDonald House to be refurbished and open to the public, how many people would love to see the church that John D. Rockefeller patronized while living in his home across the bridge, next to the MacDonald

TOMB RAIDER 11 p.m. — 700 block of West Granada Boulevard Destroy or remove tomb/monument/gravestone. A 32-year-old Daytona Beach woman was charged with a felony after she was seen kicking headstones, statues and flower vases at a local cemetery.

When police arrived at the scene, the woman was walking south from the cemetery towards Granada. The reporting officer asked her to stop, according to the arrest report, but the woman continued to walk away and said “she did not have to stop and she was not going to let him harass her today.”

The woman then began to run away from the reporting officer, and was later detained by a second officer. The damage to the cemetery was estimated at $500.

The woman was taken to jail.

Set the record straight on submerged parcel Dear Editor: To further expand on pub-

According to the incident report, the resident’s neighbor witnessed the suspect enter the yard and knock on the door.

When no one answered, the suspect then took the lawnmower, a lawn bag and placed them in the back of a Fiat.

The resident estimated the mower was worth $200-$300.

He wished to press charges.

CAUTION: CONTENTS MAY BE HOT 1:33 p.m. — 200 block of East Granada Boulevard Information. Police responded to a coffeehouse due to an incident involving spilled coffee.

According to the police report, an employee told the reporting officer that, as she was handing a coffee to a customer in the drive-thru, the lid came off and coffee spilled. The customer said the “very hot” coffee spilled onto his hands and the leg of his child, who was riding in the passenger seat.

He declined medical attention and police didn’t spot any visible injuries. The man said he fully intended to sue the coffeehouse.

lished comments, we have floated (pun intended) a lot of ideas about a possible use for the parcel while sitting in the Cassen Park Rotary Gazebo looking out over our submerged parcel. One of them, perhaps after a sip of rum, was a replica of the “Real McCoy” rum runner taking folks out for a dinner cruise. My partners and I could be accused of being dreamers but have lived, raised families and operated our businesses in Ormond Beach for decades. We know one thing for sure: Cassen Park is a treasure. A big waterfront restaurant is not in the picture. Calm down.

I’m a native of St. Petersburg where the downtown pier is an icon known worldwide. We’ve been fortunate to have visionary private investment in our downtown district. Ormond Beach has made an investment in public docks. Our “Ormond Landing” makes sense with whatever uses are deemedcompatible to complement the city’s efforts to draw boaters and visitors to Main Street and the waterfront.

BRIEFS Volusia County Schools to screen student athletes for cardiac health Student-athletes from Volusia County Schools will for the first time be offered free electrocardiogram screenings in addition to the annual state-required sports physical for middle and high schoolers, through a partnership with AdventHealth.

Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death among high school athletes, and the goal of the screenings, approved recently by the Volusia County School Board, is early detection and treatment of heart abnormalities.

“Cardiac screening has the potential to save the lives of student-athletes, and we are very excited to start the program this summer, through our partnership with AdventHealth,” VCS Superintendent Dr. Scott Fritz said.

The ECG screenings will be offered free of charge at the AdventHealth sports physical event for students in June. The cardiac screenings, which can detect heart rhythm abnormalities, are voluntary for the 2021-2022 school year, but will be required for student-athletes beginning with the following year (20222023 school year).

“Through our historic partnership, AdventHealth has pledged to be a leader for best practices in sports medicine, delivering protocols and providing medical support that ultimately improves the health and safety of our student-athletes here in Volusia County,” said Erik Nason, sports medicine manager for AdventHealth.

One in 300 student-athletes is estimated to have an undetected heart condition that puts them at risk. Including heart screenings as part of student physicals, along with quick access to Automated External Defibrillators, are among the best practices for preventing catastrophic sportsrelated injury, according to the Inter-Association Task Force

Registration for AdventHealth’s free sports physicals for student athletes for the 2021-2022 school year will open May 3. The free event will be held June 3-5 in the Rolex Lounge of the Daytona International Speedway.

In addition, families have the option of going to their personal physician for the physical and cardiac screening. For those who miss the free ECG screenings at the AdventHealth event, Who We Play For will also offer multiple ECG screening events at VCS’ 10 high schools for about $20.

“I tell them, ‘Go ahead and get vaccinated,’” Monson said. “It’s not going to be harmful to them.

It will give them protection. Many have underlying conditions like cancer or inflammatory bowel disease where they are vulnerable.”

Dr. Duane Davis, chief physician executive of the AdventHealth Institutes and a lung transplant surgeon, emphasized that vaccination is critical as the community seeks to move out of the pandemic.

W

hat does it mean to be a professional? One definition is that you’re paid for what you do. Like most community theaters, the Flagler Playhouse doesn’t pay its actors and gives only a small stipend to the directors. But new artistic director Paul Prece, of Ormond Beach, likes to think of it as an approach.

“You always work professionally,” he said. “You do what you do based on the practices of the professional theater.”

Prece, who retired from the university life in 2017 so that he could live near the beach, didn’t intend for his retirement to be a “step into my casket.” He answered an ad when the playhouse was looking for its next director, and he was quickly brought in by the Board of Directors, which was impressed by his 30 years of experience in all levels and roles of theater.

He and Jerri Berry, who is now the president of the Flagler Playhouse, joined the board together in July 2019. They met with the Ormond Beach Observer at the playhouse, in downtown Bunnell, in April, as preparations were underway for “Talking With …”, the first performance since before the pandemic.

Why is live theater important in a community?

Prece: It’s a living art form.

The performance is happening in front of the audience only once. I had a friend who was a songwriter, and he wrote a song called “Live Music Only Happens Once,” which is sort of the same idea. It may have been performed 25 times in a row, but each time it’s different.

It’s a shared experience among audience members, as well as the actors on stage. If the cast is six people, sometimes we call the audience the seventh actor. We rehearse, and the last step is we ask an audience to attend. You want to hear the sighs, the cries, the laughter, because that also affects the actors.

Berry: Theater is a way to bring people together, to share experiences, share the story.

That’s the reason I got involved in theater — to be in something

bigger than myself and meet people with a similar passion.

There have been certain shows that I have met people that I have felt like an extension of myself, like family members almost. We get very close, and it happens in almost every show.

As an audience member, it’s a totally different vibe watching live theater. You can be part of the show.

Prece: At the end of a pay, you applaud as the actors come up to take their curtain call. It’s because they know the actors are live, they’re saying, “Thank you for doing this for us.”

The first show, “Talking With …” is a series of monologues. Are monologues challenging for actors, or do they like having the stage to themselves?

Berry: It’s different in that you

don’t have anyone else to play on; it’s you, all by yourself. If you mess up, you have to figure out in your own head how you’re going to get out of this and back

MEET PAUL PRECE, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Originally from a small town about 40 miles west of Boston, Paul Prece recently relocated to Ormond Beach after having worked at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, for more than 30 years.

During his tenure he served as artistic director and teacher.

His directing ranged from classic, modern and contemporary to musicals and theater for young audiences.

Prior to academia, he worked as a director, actor, stage manager and tour manager for professional, dinner, summer stock, repertory and children’s theater companies around the United States. He holds an MFA in theater from Florida State, and a Ph.D. from University of Kansas in Theory and Criticism and African and African American Drama.

If you’re talking to the audience in the monologue, they are like another player.

Prece: You should learn as much about a play as you perform it as you do rehearsing it. You let the audience lead you.

One of the most intimidating aspects of theater to me is memorizing all those lines. How do actors do it?

Berry: I do have a trick, and it’s

one that Paul actually taught me.

It’s worked!

Prece: I don’t use the word “memorize” ever. I say, “Learn your words.”

Berry: Work on one paragraph at a time. It’s more about getting the meaning of the words. Then you add a second paragraph, and a third.

Berry: A sense of pride. It’s not

always easy, even for a somewhat confident person. There’s not a day that the nerves don’t get to you. So there’s a sense of accomplishment. There’s a sense of community with the backstage crew, with everybody — and the audience.

Prece: We use the word “ensemble,” which means “together,” in French.

Every single show you do is a singular experience.

Berry: It’s the one thing that I do just for me because I just genuinely like it. I have fun.

Prece: Some people who are shy, when they get on stage, it opens them right up.

I think people do it because it’a special thing. You meet people who have common interest.

It’s an avocation on this level.

There may be some people who aspire to greater things, but this is where they get their sea legs, where they get to practice.

Let’s talk about management styles. What is your secret to getting the best from performers and other volunteers?

Prece: Just learning their

language. Every single person in the play speaks a different language, tones of voice, how we communicate. With some people, you have to say, “Just say it faster,” and they get it.

And with others you have to say, “Do it like you’re a squirrel running across the street.” They understand that imagery.

Berry: As an educator, I’m going to tell this kid the same thing as I tell that kid, but in totally different ways.

Prece: It’s learning how they accept it. For some people, if you are kidding, you have to (wink).

You don’t have to intimidate or scream. If that’s what you think you have to do, that has something to do with your upbringing, I guess. You attract more flies with honey than with vinegar.

Pathways Elementary was recognized at the Volusia County School Board meeting on April 27 as part of the district’s monthly School Spotlight.

Pathways Principal Holly Bailey, Music teacher Jessica Palmer and a group of students shared their school’s efforts to feed and grow minds and bodies through its gardening/STEM focus, a press release reported. Students performed a song titled, “Plant a Tree,” and read “If You Plant a Seed” by Kadir Nelson. They also gave School Board members a plant for National Arbor Day.

The Volusia County School Board recently honored business leader Craig Conway with the district’s Generous Support award for his support of the annual Teacher of the Year program, the FUTURES Foundation for Volusia County Schools and public education.

Conway is the owner of Daytona Kia, Daytona Mitsubishi and Diamond Motors and Marine in New Smyrna Beach, according to a press release. He has provided a new vehicle for the Teacher of the Year to drive at no cost for the last 12 years. He also donates cash for the program.

Conway has also served as a board member for the FUTURES Foundation since 2015.

Volusia County’s search for a new emergency management director led all the way to Monroe County and the home of the Florida Keys — where they know a thing or two about emergency preparedness.

On Tuesday, April 20, the County Council confirmed Helene Wetherington, disaster recovery director for Monroe County, as Volusia’s next emergency management director.

Wetherington replaces former Emergency Management Director Jim Judge, who retired in January.

Her start date is May 17.

Wetherington brings more than 20 years of expertise to the job in local, state, federal and international emergency preparedness, planning, response and recovery.

She has been the disaster recovery director for Monroe County since 2018, where she has been coordinating long-term recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. Wetherington’s expe-

rience includes serving as assistant director of the Palm Beach County Division of Emergency Management and a planner with the Florida Coastal Management Program. Between 2014-2016, she served as the disaster management advisor to the Caribbean Overseas Territories for the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

“We’re very lucky to have attracted such a great candidate,” County Manager George Recktenwald said.

Wetherington has been an instructor of FEMA courses and for various educational institutions, and is certified as an emergency manager by the International Association of Emergency Managers and an assessor for the national Emergency Management Accreditation Program.

“It’s a pleasure to be able to pick up on this program and hopefully enhance it in some areas,” Wetherington said. “I hope we can build a stronger, better and safer Volusia County.”

BRIEFS HYDRO4 team wins four gold medals The Volusia Flagler Family YMCA’s HYDRO4 swim team recently competed at the SCY Swimming Championships, which are held

by USA Swimming — the national governing body for the sport of swimming in the United States.

The team earned one high point award, four gold, three silver, and one bronze award. The team of 19 swimmers included nine first time qualifiers, who ended with a combined 17th place finish with 400.5 points. This is the most points and highest placing of any swim team from Volusia or Flagler counties in at least the last 12 years. Every swimmer contributed to the scoring with a top 16 finish (individual or replay).

“I am very excited about the growth of our team across all the age groups,” said Corey McMeeking, head coach for the Volusia Flagler Family YMCA HYDRO4 swim team. “We have really tried to create a fun, positive team atmosphere built around consistency and hard work. As a result, the kids are excited about coming to practice, being a part of the team; and the results are obviously starting to show. The coaching staff all look forward to continuing to build on these results and taking the team to another level.”

ainland and S e a b re e z e high schools’ track teams competed in the Class 3A-Region 1 track and field regional state qualifier Saturday, May 1, at Orange Park High School in Orange Park.

Mainland had a total of 23 athletes participate. Head coach Terrance Anthony thought 10-12 had a chance to make it through to the state championship but on the day of the meet, some of his runners suffered injuries.

Buccaneer Cydney Wright placed first in the 100 and 200 meter dash with times of 11:69 and 23:46 respectively, qualifying her in the top seed for the championship in both events. Due to a timing equipment malfunction, Wright was forced to run the 100 meter dash twice but the results remained unchanged. Currently, Wright is ranked fourth in the 100 meter dash and second in the 200 meter dash in Florida.

Ella Chandler will be representing Seabreeze in the 800-meter run at the championship. Chandler qualified with a 2:14.81 placing her second in the upcoming meet. Fellow Sandcrab Tyler Smith qualified in the javelin throw with a distance of 46.62.

Smith picked up the javelin two months ago.

“During track practice, Tyler asked if he could try it,” coach Matt Coleman said. “I told him, ‘Sure.’ He picked up the javelin and threw it. I couldn’t believe it.

I told him there’s no going back.

Now you have to practice throwing.”

Both teams had many standout athletes competing during regionals. Buccaneer Theodore Lockley ran eighth in the highly competitive 100-meter dash with a time of 11.06 while running in multiple events. Sandcrab Kimberly Collins, while participating in the pole vault, long jump and triple jump, placed sixth in the high jump with a 4’9.75”.

thew Deakin singled on a ground ball and remained on base as Gabriel Bridges hit a sacrifice bunt, advancing him to third.

Pitcher Jonathan Campbell then hit a single, driving Deakin in for a final score of 5-2.

Mainland High School’s assistant athletic director, Terrence Anthony, spoke to the Buccaneers following the game.

“You guys have come a long way,” Anthony said. “Some of you are football players that haven’t played since, well, I don’t know.

Some of you have never played but now’s the time to do it. This is a game. It is not life or death.”

Median home sales price skyrocketed in March There was a 6% increase in total home sales and a 24% increase in the median sales price, compared to March 2020.

An analysis of Daytona Beach Multiple Listing Service data by Wyse Home Team Realty showed that 519 existing single-family homes (detached) were sold in the Daytona Beach area with median home sales price of $310,000.

That’s a 6% increase in total home sales and a 24% increase in the median sales price, compared to March 2020. Total sales volume was up by 38% in year-over-year comparisons.

In monthly comparisons, MLS reports show the median home sales price rose nearly 13% over February and home sales rose 26.5% during that time.  March 2021: 519 sales, $193,280,398 sales volume, $310,000 median sales price.  March 2020: 488 sales $139,698,293 sales volume, $250,000 median sales price.  February 2021: 410 sales, $141,072,756 sales volume, $275,000 median sales price.

with Pat Sajak, she mentioned she is a sixth grade teacher who recently learned American Sign Language and now teaches it to her students. She was inspired to learn by members of her family and a former student who are deaf.

“I am thrilled beyond belief and I’m so grateful for this opportunity,” Trammell said. “It’s amazing.”

The first person she planned to tell of the win was her husband, Dave. Immediately following the taping, Trammell called him to share the news.

The couple plans to tour some Latitude Margaritaville communities in May to solidify their plans. In total, Trammell won $398,690 in cash and prizes including a trip to Margaritaville Vacation Club St. Thomas.
