BRIEFS Shed fire near Ormond kills 50-year-old man A 50-year-old man died near Ormond Beach on Sunday, Feb. 21, after the shed in which he was living caught fire.

The fire was reported around 7:15 a.m. in the 100 block of Seville Street. Firefighters from Volusia County, Ormond Beach and Holly Hill responded and extinguished the flames. The man had been pulled from the doorway of the shed by a witness, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire appears to be an accident. Victim’s name is pending.

Citizens donate funds to preserve the Loop

Ormond Beach is currently in the process of updating its parks and recreation master plan, last updated in 2005.

The first public meeting for the update is scheduled for 6 p.m. on March 31. The location has yet to be determined. In the meantime, citizens should expect to be surveyed soon for their opinions regarding the city’s Leisure Service facilities.

At the Leisure Services Board meeting on Feb. 10, the members expressed the importance of the survey being conducted in multiple formats, such as in-person and online, to ensure citizen participation.

The grassroots movement to preserve the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail continues, as a new partnership between local environmental nonprofit Dream Green Volusia and the North Florida Land Trust offers residents a chance to donate toward future land acquisition.

Currently, the “Defend the Loop” project is eyeing the sale of a 36-acre parcel within the Plantation Oaks development. Volusia County Government is currently investigating options to purchase the land, should

that be the will of the County Council. On Jan. 19, developer Parker Mynchenberg gave the county a 90-day deadline to decide.

Suzanne Scheiber, founder of Dream Green Volusia, said they are currently working on garnering public support.

“Anytime that the county is going to be voting to spend taxpayer money, they need to know that the public wants it,” she said.

The campaign to “Defend the Loop” started last week, and Dream Green Volusia have

distributed 200 signs to date.

As of Feb. 22, $5,590 had been raised through the NFLT website.

There is no fundraising goal at this time, but the NFLT will use the money to protect other land in the Loop, should the county not buy the Plantation Oaks lots.

“We’re trying to leave nothing on the table, so to speak. Anything we can raise with them, will just go towards that.”

ECHO grant to help PAC project?

No, the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center is not closing. However, a renovation of its lobby is in the works At the Leisure Services Board meeting on Feb. 10, a motion was made to recommend that the City Commission allocate $325,000 as matching funds to apply for an ECHO grant to help cover the costs of the project.

When asked when the PAC will reopen, Leisure Services Director Robert Carolin said there are no current plans.

“It’s not just Ormond,” Carolin said. “It’s a problem all over the US. Most of these small theaters are in limbo.”

5,000 Mounds at Tomoka State Park give insight into the Timucua tribes JARLEENE ALMENAS ASSOCIATE EDITOR

The Tomoka Mound and Midden Complex provides a lens to the past.

Tucked away in a section of the park currently not accessible to the public, surrounded by historic Oaks and sturdy red bay trees, the 12 mounds that make up the complex have given researchers a glimpse into what life was like for the Timucua people that once inhabited this area. Easily missed unless you know what you’re looking for, the mounds are more than just hidden hills in the brush.

Since the 1880s, the mystery of these mounds has sparked interest.

First came a man named A.E. Douglass, who arrived in Florida with the interest of collecting Native American antiquities in 1882. After excavating three mounds, he ended up finding 10 bannerstones buried in one of the largest of the mounds, known now by its number: 6. After Douglass, John Griffin and Hale Smith excavated Mound 2 in 1946, discovering evidence of human remains. From that point on, these mounds became associated with ceremonial burials. Then in 1979, two more men — Randolph Daniel and Jay Haviser — worked to identify more mounds within the park. They found six more.

These ancient mounds date back up to 5,000 years ago, and are some of the largest and most intact of their kind in the state of Florida. And as of Nov. 27, 2020, they form part of the National Register of Historic Places.

It’s an accomplishment, said Philip Rand, park manager for the Tomoka Basin State Parks.

“That’s a career milestone,” he said. “It’s something you’ll always be proud of.”

Thanks to the Tomoka Archaeology project, started in 2013 by Dr. Jon Endonino, an associate professor of the Anthropology department at Eastern Kentucky University, it is now known that the oldest mounds in the complex, dating from 4,300 to 5,000 years ago, are composed of earth and shell. They also show that the Timucua had a diet of turtles, shellfish and freshwater fish, evidence that the Tomoka River was at one point a freshwater river, said Charles DuToit, park manager for the Tomoka Basin State Parks between 1993 and 2009.

Four of the mounds have been estimated to be between 4,700 and 4,900 years old, and the two most recent date from 1,600 to 3,200 years old, according to the project. Of the 12, half were identified as burial mounds.

DuToit wasn’t surprised that the Tomoka Mound and Midden Complex was added to the National Register. It qualifies in all ways, he said — from the archaic evidence of technology, the craftsmanship in artifacts found and the insight it provides into the lifestyles of the Timucua people.

“There are very few sites that cover that span of time, and also the span of different environmental changes,” DuToit said.

Rand estimates that he and Zimmerman removed over 65 trees that impacted the mounds and removed over 200 yards of debris.

Much of the clearing of the tops of the mounds was done by hand.

Recently, the The Black Bear Chapter of the Florida Trail Association has been instrumental in helping to keep clearing the mounds. Aggie Armstrong, park services specialist, came to the Tomoka Basin State Parks to help recruit volunteers. The outreach of groups like the Florida Trails Association is a benefit to the park.

“I really cherish the partnerships in the community,” she said.

PREPARING THE AREA

‘THEY FELT SPECIAL’

Before Endonino began his digs, the mounds were in need of a lot of clearing. Rand, aided by Chan Zimmerman, began the work several years ago as a “side project” simply because the roads leading to the mounds were overgrown and both enjoyed walking through the area. Then in 2015, Rand and Zimmerman began removing downed storm trees and began a project to mow as much of the area as possible.

Endonino informed Rand that he would be submitting photos, a summary of his findings, and other background research for the nomination.

But it wouldn’t be the first time these mounds would be seen by others outside of the project and the park staff.

of the motivating factor to clear the area surrounding the mounds, Rand said: They wanted to give the public a chance to see them.

The event, held in partnership with Ormond Beach Historical Society, was a sold-out success.

“They felt special, because it was really the first time people had been taken back there to see the mounds,” Rand said. “...

Armstrong recalls the facial expressions of the tour participants. She could relate; before she got involved with the mounds, she had also never seen them. Marvel only grew when Endonino shared that, based on his findings, he concluded that the same species of plants seen there today were also there when the Timucua inhabited the area.

“I was excited to hear how old they were,” Armstrong said. “I think everybody on the tram was ... trying to picture just how long ago that was and the fact that it does look the same now — it’s just amazing to me.”

In the end, Rand said the Tomoka Archaeology project really was the driving force behind the complex being added to the National Register.

“Without that, we wouldn’t know what we know about the mounds,” Rand said.

DID YOU KNOW? There is a burial mound in Ormond Beach, and it was once almost lost to history.

The day was May 27, 1982. The bulldozer was ready to go.

A local couple was looking forward to building their “dream home” across the Halifax River. The problem was, in order for them to build that home, one of Ormond Beach’s oldest pieces of history had to be removed: The Ormond Burial Mound, located on the corner of South Beach Street and Mound Avenue.

According to an Orlando Sentinel article dated Jan. 7, 1983, then-Ormond Beach City Manager John Leemkuil halted work on the mound, one of the most intact Native American burial mounds in Eastern Florida, after citizens raised concerns about its removal.

It was an action the couple sued the city for (and later settled), and one that led to the preservation of the landmark.

“It was almost the mound that was not,” said Dr. Philip Shapiro, who serves on both the city’s Historic Landmarks Preservation and Quality of Life boards.

Shapiro said archeological studies estimate the Ormond Mound became the final resting place for over 100 Native Americans.

The future of River Bend Golf Club depends a lot on the Federal Aviation Administration.

The city of Ormond Beach is currently weighing its options when it comes to the now-closed 171-acre golf course property near the municipal airport, and hopes to present an overview to the City Commission within the next month regarding next steps.

A petition is floating around in the community urging River Bend be run as a municipal golf course, but the city may have its hands tied in that regard. As of Tuesday, Feb. 23, has almost 900 signatures.

Because the lease with the former tenant was terminated, the question remains whether running a golf course is a viable option at all, since golf courses are no longer a compatible use on airport property, according to the FAA. City Economic Development Director Brian Rademacher estimated the change in FAA guidance to take place sometime in the 2000s and said one factor to consider is that the city is obligated under FAA grant assurances to maintain properties adjacent to the airport under the limited uses outlined by the FAA. “With airport land, you’ve got two different uses,” Rademacher said. “You’ve got aeronautical uses and non-aeronautical uses, and in the case of the golf course, that’s a non-aeronautical use. But any activity that occurs on airport property, its intent and purpose is to generate revenue for the airport.”

Was it ethical? Mom called her brother, a priest and professor.

Would God forgive her if something went wrong? Next, she called the doctor. Did he trust the science? Lastly, mom phoned her sister. Could she and dad forgive themselves if I had to live in an iron lung, the mechanical respirator of the day?

Finally, my parents signed.

On the day of the first shot, I was undeterred by the smell of alcohol, the girl who threw up, or the crying boy. I rolled up my sleeve and watched the nurse inject me. I swaggered back to my classroom with my official Polio Pioneer card and metal pin.

Months after the third injection, the Buffalo Evening News announced what each Polio Pioneer had received: the vaccine or the placebo. I’d gotten “the water,” but I’d done my part to erase polio.

The necessity of mass vaccination was clearly proven, communicated and mandated. Vaccines (Salk and others) obliterated polio in the United States by 1979!

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, scientists worked nonstop to eradicate it. And because the vaccines went through trials quicker than ever before, some people were skeptical about safety. But as a trailblazer, I sought the first available COVID-19 vaccine without hesitation. The moment I received the first Moderna dose, I felt a surge of hope. After the second, I felt liberated, as though life might resume, albeit with precautions.

Let’s educate and persuade those folks to get inoculated and extinguish COVID-19 the way we annihilated Polio.

He explained that the FAA stance is that golf courses in proximity to airports could potentially encumber land that would otherwise be used for aeronautical purposes, and that certain hazards could impact airport operations, such as the congregation of people and the attraction of wildlife that could impact aviation safety.

Though the future use of the land is still undecided, there is one assurance: It won’t be used for residential development.

Rademacher said determinations of how to use properties take time, especially considering the size of River Bend.

“There’s different flames in the fire that have to be vetted and looked at in order to come to a better understanding, but I think we’re moving forward in a methodical fashion that will allow us to better identify what’s going on and what our opportunities are,” he said.

Scientists spent the first half of the 20th century trying to cure the epidemic that wreaked terror worldwide: life-threatening polio.

As a child who envisioned myself starring in heroic scenarios, I was fortunate to help.

Imagine my excitement in early 1954 when the golden ticket to save children globally was laid in my hands: a permission slip to be a Polio Pioneer! My second-grade teacher asked who was brave enough to get three shots that would end the monster disease.

She didn’t have to ask twice.

I rushed home from school clutching the consent form that would change history. We were going to wipe out polio!

I begged my parents to let me be a Polio Pioneer. To my surprise, my parents agonized over the decision. Mom, who’d gone doorto-door requesting dimes to fund polio research, seemed the most skeptical. Raising money was one thing, but letting your daughter be a guinea pig was another.

Children would be randomly assigned to either the group that got the vaccine or the control group, which we dubbed “getting the water.” It was the first time a double-blind method was used meaning neither families nor vac-

Volusia County Schools cancels proms for 2021, but graduation ceremonies will be held There will be no proms, graduation bashes or other large-group senior activities this year, announced Volusia County Schools on Friday, Jan. 19. However, graduation ceremonies will proceed in June with social distancing in place.

According to an announcement by the district, “high schools will plan alternatives to prom and other traditional activities to make the end of senior year special for graduates,” per Dr. Gabriel Berrio, VCS assistant superintendent for high schools.

District leaders are working with the Department of Health and are using guidance set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to make decisions regarding senior actitivies.

“There is no way to safely social-distance at a dance,” said Volusia County Health Department Administrator Patricia Boswell in the announcement.

The graduations for Class of 2021 will follow the same model used for Class of 2020 and will be held at the Ocean Center. Attendance will be limited, with up to two tickets for each senior available for purchase through their high schools. Ceremonies will be livestreamed and later posted on the district website.

Seabreeze High School’s graduation is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. on June 4; Mainland’s is scheduled at 4 p.m. on June 4.

they were willing to accommodate the wants of the neighbors, but that a site plan won’t be submitted until the land use and zoning matters are resolved. These will need to go before the City Commission for final approval.

“I’m here to represent that we’re listening,” Posey said.

“We’re happy to do it. It’s just it costs a lot to do a site plan with the uncertainty of where we go from here.”

Sheldon Schultz, president of the homeowners association for Trails South 40, said the developer approached him several months ago inquiring about merging the new development into theirs. A survey was sent to their 98 homeowners, and 68 replied. Of that number, 44 were in favor of the initial request, and 24 were against. “[Sagebrush Trail], as far as I know, are all vehemently against it,” Schultz said.

That offer to incorporate the new parcels into the neighborhood has died, for now.

One homeowner of Sagebrush Trail said he and his neighbors oppose the development because of the loss of greenspace it will represent in the city.

“All for no other reason at this present time, than to present an

opportunity for the developer to make a quick dollar,” said Alan Ferguson.

The board expressed concerns over building 18 units on the site, but Planning Director Steven Spraker said that was a maximum that would likely not be attainable after buffers, stormwater retention and other aspects of the site plan were drafted. If denied the sought-after changes, the developer could use the property as a borrow pit, as planned by FDOT. “So there was a recognition that this land, at some point, was going to have some type of impact — that it wasn’t going to be preserved in its natural state,” Spraker said.

Board member G.G. Galloway said he would be surprised if the developer could fit anything close to 18 units on the parcel. He said

that would be an issue to examine once the site plan came before them.

“I’m not worried about my vote, because we can go back and correct it if they don’t do what they say, and it can be a big fat ‘No’,” Galloway said.

In response to concerns about traffic, board member Al Jorczak said he doesn’t see it as a reasonable objection due to the size of the development. He added that the developer was asking for similar zoning and land uses to what was there before FDOT purchased the property.

“In terms of those individuals that say, ‘well, every extra car is adding to the problem,’ this is relatively insignificant compared to what the scope of the problem is and what’s coming our way,” Jorczak said.

Tying tangible experience to troubling data, five school superintendents addressed a House panel Feb. 18, with some asking for “more teeth” in a law to help find students who have gone unaccounted for this school year.

State economists estimate that 87,811 fewer students have enrolled in public schools than were predicted for the 20202021 academic year, which has been shadowed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As lawmakers try to pinpoint how much of the enrollment drop is a result of students leaving traditional public schools for private schools or homeschooling, and how many simply can’t be found, the superintendents tried to give the House PreK-12 Appropriations Subcommittee a clearer picture.

Miami-Dade County Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said 10,006 fewer students than expected enrolled in his district’s schools. He said 78 percent can be accounted for in three categories: They moved out of state, moved to another county or enrolled in private schools.

But he said the remaining 22 percent, or roughly 2,200 students, “were unaccounted for or not represented in our enrollment numbers.”Carvalho said about 900 students registered for the school year but “did not enter school at all.”

From borrow pit to townhome project?

In a 4-2 vote, the Ormond Beach Planning Board recommended approval of a future land use designation change that will allow a developer to build up to 18 townhome units on a 2.81-acre parcel near the Trails South 40 neighborhood.

The land located at 1190 W. Granada Blvd. was previously identified as a borrow pit for the Florida Department of Transportation, but in 2018, the city was notified that the state was selling the property, according to a staff report. The property has remained forested since DOT bought it in 1993 and had the land use changed from “Office/ Professional” to “Open Space/ Conservation.” In 1994, the property was rezoned from R-3 singlefamily medium density to special environmental.

Interested in building townhomes, the developer is seeking a land use change to “Medium Density Residential” and a rezoning to R-4, single-family cluster and townhouse. Board members Harold Briley and Angeline Schull voted against the land use change; Briley also voted against the rezoning at the Feb. 18 meeting, bringing that vote to 5-1.

Briley voted no because he said his preference for the parcel would be that it be used for commercial purposes, which he believes is more consistent with the area.

Attorney Joseph Posey, of Storch Law Firm, represents the developer, and told the board that they wanted to match the land use to the east of the property, which borders Sagebrush Trail of the Trails South 40 neighborhood.

When the topic of buffers was broached by the board, Posey said

Separation of church and state exists Dear Editor: Yes, Mr. Fine. There is a separation of church and state.

In the article “Florida House backs moment of silence in schools” (see brief on the right of this page), Randy Fine, R-Brevard County, states, in part, that: “There is no such a thing as a separation of church and state.” He further claims “that it is a fiction created by some people.”

However, I believe historic records show Mr. Fine’s statement to be false. President Thomas Jefferson believed in the concept of the separation of church and state. He referenced the term in an 1802 letter to the Baptist Association stating, in part, that the American people “...declared that their legislature should ‘make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,’ thus building a wall of separation between church and state.”

Indeed the Supreme Court has cited Jefferson’s letter in key cases such as the landmark 1947 case Ever-

ton v. Board of Education.

The court cited a direct link between Jefferson’s view of a wall of “separation between church and state” and the First Amendment establishment clause. That is a fact, Mr. Fine, not “a fiction.”

Defend the Loop Dear Editor: I have now lived here over 31 years. In years past, it was “Save the Loop.” We fought long and hard and the fight was successful in many many ways. Now we have a new group, and we want to “Defend the Loop.”

Before writing this letter, I searched Google for information about the Loop.

Everything was written to entice me to come to visit the most beautiful place on Earth. Winding peaceful roads with trees creating a cathedral ceiling called a hammock. Google urged me to stop on the roadside when possible to drink in the quiet beauty and listen to the birds sing. Perhaps I might take along some gear to fish in the

water along the roadside, or just sit and watch blue heron, eagles, or an occasional alligator.

Nowhere did Google entice me to look at all the new developments lining the roadway; displacing wildlife and interfering with water shed. I looked at photos published on local websites with trees reported to be as old as the ages, small parks along the way to stop and picnic, a draw bridge operating over the Intracoastal Waterway, a state park... That 32-mile loop could take an entire day of exploring if you have the time.

The Loop is the very first place I take my out-of-town visitors. I drive it every weekend just for the peace. Don’t let intensive over-building along the Loop destroy our way of life here. Defend the Loop.

Florida House backs moment of silence in schools With the proposal’s sponsor saying children growing up now “have issues” in part because “they don’t have time for moments of reflection,” a House panel approved a controversial bill on Feb. 16 that would mandate daily moments of silence in schools.

The measure (HB 529), sponsored by House PreK-12 Appropriations Chairman Randy Fine, R-Brevard County, was backed by the House Early Learning and Elementary Education Subcommittee in a 12-6 vote.

Fine argued his bill explicitly would not push religion on publicschool students, saying it would remove references to prayer in a current law that allows for “silent prayer or meditation” at the start of each school day or week. He also said the concept isn’t explicitly written into the Constitution.

“There is no such thing as a separation of church and state. It is a fiction that has been created by some people. There is no establishment of religion,” Fine said. “That is very different than the prevention of religion.”

CITY EMPLOYEE GETS KEY TO THE CITY UPON RETIREMENT Last month, the city of Ormond Beach said farewell to one of its longtime employees.

Ken White, an information systems specialist, was hired on Nov, 9, 1992 as an office assistant. Through the years, he held positions including computer operator and data processing technician.

Known as the “go-to person” in the city’s Information Technology department, according to the city newsletter, White had a vast knowledge of the city’s computer system.

He retired after 28 years of working with the city. Due to COVID-19, White had been working from home, and to make his last day special, the city planned a surprise parade.

The participants included police, fire and other vehicles.

White was also give a key to the city. “[White] was quite surprised and enjoyed every minute,” the city newsletter for February reads. “He thanked everyone for the big send off, and said that it really made his day.”

BIRDWATCHING IN OUR BACKYARD The Great Backyard Bird Count concluded on Feb. 15, and Central Park in Ormond Beach ranked third in the area for the number of different species seen, according to the Environmental Discovery Center’s Facebook page.

Four birders submitted lists to the eBird app for the event, totaling a total 49 different species found. Merritt Island and Lake Woodruff, both National Wildlife Refuges, ranked first and second with 65 and 59 species, respectively.

In a video produced by master naturalist and Halifax River Audubon member Joan Tague, a total of 308 lists were submitted to the count throughout the county, with 162 species listed.

SHOW ME YOUR BADGE Earlier this month, Cub Scout Pack 74, Den 4, visited the Ormond Beach Police Department to earn credit toward their community service badge, according to a Facebook post by the law enforcement agency.

BLACK HISTORY IN ORMOND BEACH In celebration of Black History Month, the Capt. James Ormond Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution invited community leader and local author James F. Daniel to share his experiences growing up in Ormond Beach.

Daniels arrived to the city at 11 years old in 1939 from a cotton plantation in Georgia.

Teachers, cops over 50 can get vaccinated TOM URBAN AND CHRISTINE SEXTON THE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA

Marking a significant change in Florida’s vaccination strategy, Gov. Ron DeSantis on Feb. 23 said teachers and law enforcement officers ages 50 and older will have access to COVID-19 vaccine doses in the coming days as four federally supported vaccination sites open in the state.

DeSantis has for weeks pushed ahead with a goal of vaccinating as many seniors as possible.

He said Tuesday during a news conference in Hialeah that newly announced Federal Emergency Management Agency-supported sites in Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando and Tampa, will offer vaccinations to people ages 65 and older.

But DeSantis added he will use a portion of the “tens of thousands” of extra vaccine doses the FEMA sites bring to the state to vaccinate teachers and law enforcement officers.

Florida Education Association President Andrew Spar did not know how many teachers would qualify for the vaccines. Regardless, Spar said DeSantis’ plan doesn’t go far enough to protect teachers and said the vaccines should be available across the state, not at just four locations. The Florida Education Association is the state’s largest teachers union.

“If we truly are trying to make

sure we keep everyone safe and protect the learning environment, it just makes good sense to make sure everyone who works in our schools has access to the vaccination,” Spar said. “Our educators have been on the front line, fighting to make sure kids are getting the education they deserve.

It doesn’t make sense for the governor to continue to ignore what the medical field is saying and what science is saying.”

The federal government has given approval to vaccines produced by Moderna and Pfizer to prevent the spread of the virus.

Both vaccines require two doses.

Federal officials on Friday will review an emergency use authorization request by Johnson & Johnson for its vaccine candidate.

If approved, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine would only require one dose.

Demand for vaccinations has outpaced supply, so the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention outlined a three-phase vaccine rollout plan.

The first phase, issued in early December, recommended vaccinating health care workers and long-term care residents. The second phase, issued three weeks later, recommended vaccinating people ages 75 and older and non-health care frontline “essential” workers, including teachers, police officers and grocery store employees. The CDC included vaccinating people ages 65 to 74 in a third phase, along with

younger people who have underlying medical conditions.

DeSantis, though, ignored the second round of recommendations and issued an executive order in December directing that vaccine doses be given to staff members and residents of longterm care centers, people ages 65 and older and people who hospitals deemed were high risk.

State-collected vaccination data indicates that DeSantis’s edict is being followed. Nearly 76 percent of the almost 2.7 million people who have been vaccinated through Sunday were 65 or older, according to state data.

DeSantis said his administration has been preparing to get the vaccines to law enforcement officers who are 50 or older and has contacted local police departments and sheriff’s offices.

Florida Police Benevolent Association President John Kazanjian said the new policy is a good start but that more needs to be done.

“Over here in Palm Beach County, I’ve lost four deputies under 50 years old.” Kazanjian told The News Service of Florida.

“Maybe 20% of our membership are 50 and over. The other 80 percent are under 50 years of age, and we need to get the needles in their arms.”

When the Biden administration first floated the idea of opening FEMA sites in Florida, DeSantis was critical and said the federal government didn’t need to interfere with the state’s vaccination efforts. DeSantis has reversed his position, as the addition of the FEMA sites means more doses.

JAN. 14

DEER-LY BELOVED 12:33 p.m. — 500 block of West Granada Boulevard Suspicious incident. Officers were dispatched to a wooded area near some medical offices after a caller notified the finding of what he believed to be human remains.

The reporting officer was led to the bones, which were partially covered by dirt and leaves on the ground. The officer noted they were white in color and reported they appeared to be from a large animal. The bones were sent to the medical examiner’s office, where it was determined that the bones were from a deer, or other large animal.

The case is now closed.

FEB. 1

PARKING LOT OUTBURST 7:03 p.m. — 1600 block of West Granada Boulevard Aggravated assault. As a 32-year-old Ormond Beach man was leaving a local gas station, he was confronted by an unknown man who began yelling

“fight me” at the resident and offered him $100 to get out of his car and do so.

According to a police report, the resident tried to leave and the man blocked him in with his vehicle. The resident told police the man then threatened to shoot him, and that as the man walked back to his car, he feared the man was going to retrieve a firearm. The resident was able to leave the scene and called police from a nearby parking lot.

Police spoke with the gas station attendants, who said the man was a regular and that he had been upset when they refused to sell him alcohol without an ID. The resident expressed to police that he wished to press charges.

MEMORY IS A TRICKY THING 8:09 a.m. — First block of Lake Vista Way Information. A 47-year-old Ormond Beach resident called police to report that his vehicle had been vandalized, claiming that it happened overnight and that the car had not been driven in three weeks.

Police noticed that the damage resembled such caused by a crash, but the resident insisted he hadn’t driven it, according to a police report. Police conducted an investigation and discovered the vehicle had been driven eight days prior. The resident said he didn’t remember this, but then his wife reminded him they had used the car to go to a restaurant on that day.

Thanks to a $39,500 grant from the Pabst Steinmetz Foundation, the La-Doris McClaney School of Performing Arts and Communication of BCU’s Department of Music is planning to implement a training model to increase health and wellness in targeted sectors of the community through the integration of music with Eastern and Western medicine. It’s an effort led by Dr. Rose Grace, Dr. Daniel Hollar and Dr. Diana Lee that grew out of the school’s annual “Music and Medicine” symposium, which is now in its third year.

ommunity Paramedic Caryn Prather visits people who repeatedly call 911 for non-emergency reasons — often because they’re older, lonely and so in need of even a few brief moments of human contact that they’ll make up excuses to call. The following is an edited transcript of an interview with Prather.

A: Since COVID, most of what I do now is over the phone. Our guys, or one of the fire departments, will call me and say, “We keep going out to this house; they keep calling 911.”…

They fall a lot, or we’re finding they call just because they’re lonely or they’re unable to get their medicine. And then the guys send me a text or an email

and I will call the person.

Most of the time, what I have found is that information is the biggest thing that they need: They don’t understand that they can call the pharmacy and get their medication delivered; they don’t understand that if you just stop taking it … this can cause more harm than continuing to take it.

A lot of these people don’t want to go to a grocery store — that scares them. I try to get them set up to where someone can purchase their groceries and bring them. In some cases ... either we get them set up with Meals on Wheels, or I get meals from Senior Services, and I will take it to them.

Q: What are the home visits like?

A: If they are able to come out of the door, we’ll do everything outside. ... We find that, probably more times than not, they’re just isolated, especially since COVID has happened. We have found that some of these people have not left their house in a year

Q: Perhaps you could walk me through what a typical home visit is like. How do you start the conversation?

A: I just try to get them comfortable and offer suggestions. ... It’s easier to be a little more empathetic and listen a little more when it’s not your family member — sometimes, were have a tendency to kind of brush off things with family. I will just sit and listen to them, and a lot of times, that’s just what they want.

Even people that are married and have a spouse, they just want to talk to someone and just have some human contact to make them feel like they are human again.

“Some of these people have not left their house in a year … and they don’t want family to come, because they’re scared that they might get sick or the family member might get sick.”

Q: What do you do if it seems like somebody might really need a psychologist or a psychiatrist?

A: That’s when I push the fact that you need to go to see your primary care doctor. I will make a list of questions for them, because they go in and they forget. If they have it all written down, it makes it easier.

Q: How common are the people that are calling because they’re lonely?

A: They don’t ... say they’re calling because they’re lonely. We pick up on those things because either they’ve fallen, or they call 911 and they have something very minor that needs to be

dealt with, but the bottom line is they’re just lonely. ... People that have actually no medical issue, other than being lonely — there’s probably about 40. I don’t talk to them every day, but I’ll call them here and there just to check on them, or if I’m driving in their area, I’ll stop by just to say hi to them.

Q: Is there any else you can think of that you’d like to add?

A: We try really hard to help as many people as possible, and to try to give information and give our community what they need. ... Since COVID started, community paramedicine has changed, and has gone down, it seems like, about 50 different roads. I’m hoping that we are helping to keep [patients] healthy so that hopefully, one day, people can go to the grocery store and go out and get to be around people.

Q: How has what you’ve been doing changed because of COVID-19?

… and they don’t want family to come, because they’re scared that they might get sick or the family member might get sick.

Before, they would have things where they could get on a bus and go to a specific place every day, where they would play games … and could be with people and have conversations with them. They’re not getting that now. That’s probably the saddest thing. They’re not on the computer; they’re not good on their phones. ... When we go to give the vaccines, they don’t want us to leave. They want us to stay, because they want to have someone to talk to.

Q +A SCHOOL COUNSELORS ON STUDENT MENTAL HEALTH

More students are seeking help during the pandemic JARLEENE ALMENAS ASSOCIATE EDITOR

S

tudents have faced a lot of changes in the past year.

They left their classrooms for spring break in 2020 and returned to virtual instruction two weeks later.

High school graduations were postponed to July, and when in-person classes renewed in August 2020, their schools no longer looked the same. Now, they had oneway hallways, plastic dividers on their desks, and assigned seating at lunch.

At Ormond Beach Middle School, the school counselors recognize that these new protocols — though important for the students’ safety during a global pandemic — were challenging for kids. But what they also saw was an increase in both the number of students reaching out for help with their mental health and the frequency with which they asked.

The Observer recently spoke with school counselors Tara Fatta, Lisa Gallagher and Kelle Deriggi on how students are coping with their mental health.

What are some contributing factors when it comes to students who are struggling?

Have you seen any difficulties of students readjusting to inperson instruction?

Fatta: Being confined to the house is starting to get to some students, where they don’t have the sports, or they don’t have the outlets anymore.

Gallagher: Also, contributing factors would be the increase in screen time. They’re not leaving the house, and not being able to get outside because of fear or whatever other factors a family might have.

Gallagher: We have had a lot of students go back and forth between [Volusia Live], trying to figure out what the best pattern is for them. We saw a lot more lack of motivation to get assignments completed. We have a lot of teachers complaining about that across the nation.

Fatta: We’re creatures of habit.

So students have been at home, logging on when they felt like it.

It was very difficult to have them

get back in the saddle as far as, “You need to be on time. You need to be engaged. You need to be productive.”

Have you seen challenges with mental health that are specific to middle school?

Deriggi: A lot of students were struggling with loneliness and isolation, and lack of that support network. Even though we’re back in school, they are still feeling some of that. They don’t have those connections — the teams, the sports, the activities outside of school. On campus, as much as we try to make it normal, it’s still different.

When you have a lot that are struggling on a deeper level with some depression and anxiety, because the whole world is in a pandemic, it’s a scary time for them.

Has the pandemic affected how you would approach situations like bullying or issues at home?

Gallagher: We’ve had to really explore all options and see what fits with every family. We’re the first line of defense. We do have a mental health team now that really stepped up to the plate, so if we can’t find a community agency and the student is on campus, we’ll give that child some services one way or another. At least Volusia County Schools does offer mental health counseling now, which has increased, and they’re doing a

better job in responding to the need.

What is one thing you wished parents knew about their child’s mental health?

Fatta: I know a lot of the time parents will want to “fix it.”

We’re finding, just as counselors, that they just want to be heard. My biggest suggestion to parents would be ask your child how they’re feeling, and really listen to the answer while being nonjudgmental.

Gallagher: And the kids want to feel validated.

Fatta: [Adults] forget that to a 12-year-old, the little things are big things because they don’t have that life experience to have perspective, and especially now during a pandemic, they have less opportunities to have life experiences and really have perspective.

What coping mechanisms should parents implement with their children?

Fatta: Having those conversations with your children, and also more family outings that are safe — going for a bike ride, going for walks and getting out of the house in a safe way.

Deriggi: This is new territory for all of us. It’s OK not to know what to do, and it’s OK to be confused, and it’s OK to be scared, but we’re going to get through this together. I love communicating with parents at school and being a team. I go to my friends for help and advice with my own family, and I know the three of us as counselors like to be here as support for families.

It’s challenging to get through middle school — so just that family time, that open communication, just listening — goes a long way.

Bethune-Cookman to expand ‘Music and Medicine’ CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

The symposium focused on helping musicians deal with the stresses of their profession, both physical and mental. But in the face of the ongoing pandemic, Grace said they recognized that these coping mechanisms presented to their students and fellow music educators could benefit health care workers and other frontline workers, including classroom teachers. There couldn’t have been a more urgent time to share the benefits, she explained.

“The goal really is to introduce, educate, but most importantly improve everybody’s health wellness in both their professional as well as personal lives,” said Grace, an associate professor of piano at BCU. She has also served as the founder and director of the BCU music outreach program during the past 12 years.

Grace, of Ormond Beach, first became aware of the Pabst Steinmetz Foundation last year during a conference on arts and wellness programs. At the time, she

and her team were planning their second symposium after having received positive feedback from the inaugural event. Little did she know that this year’s symposium would be virtual, livestreamed on Feb. 20. This year’s theme was “Fighting the COVID Fatigue.”

Thanks to the foundation’s grant, BCU will be able to expand this training model, made up of workshops featuring clinicians such as chiropractors, musicians, audiologists and tai-chi instructors. They hope to hold a series of comprehensive training workshops throughout the year focusing on holistic approaches to mental health support, stress reduction and efficient body usage, according to a press release.

“I really do think we are going to truly revolutionize, I hope, the lives and the state of wellness of our individuals here in this immediate community and I certainly hope within Florida and hoping beyond that,” Grace said.

SEEING IT IN ACTION

The combination of music and healing struck a chord with Grace seven years ago.

At the time, Grace, who is a pianist, had been diagnosed with a lung infection. The aftermath of the intense treatment left her in a state where she couldn’t play, and she said her cognitive abilities were weakened. But through acupuncture and tai chi, Grace was able to begin playing again.

She started to apply the same concepts of Eastern medicine with teaching.

During one exercise, she asked vocal students to sing before and after completing a tai chi routine.

The difference was “astounding,” Grace said. One student she interviewed afterward said she felt she had better control of her breath and was more focused on her vocals.

“If I didn’t actually experience it for myself and somebody told me about it, I would have told them, ‘OK, stop telling me those fairy tales,’” Grace said. “But I felt that powerful impact of it, so when I was hearing our students in some sense relating the same thing, where they felt an instantaneous improvement and freedom, and focus… it was empowering and thrilling for me to hear — that [Lee] and I could bring something so beneficial to our students, to our campus and beyond that to the community.”

A TEAM EFFORT

The power of the training model lies in bridging medicine, arts and sciences together, a press release states. As one of six grant recipients, and the only university awardee among nonprofit organizations, collaboration between the three team members is essential.

Hollar, an assistant professor of psychology at BCU who also serves as the Department Chair of Behavior and Social Sciences Studies, earned his doctorate degree from Florida State University with research interests focusing on suicide, eating disordered behavior and ethnicity among individuals of African descent. He is the project’s co-prime investigator alongside Grace.

Lee, of Ormond Beach, is the

project’s external collaborator, and is the former director of the Odessa Chambliss Center for Health Equity at BCU. During the past three years, she has worked alongside Grace to bring the symposiums to the community.

Grace said she is eternally grateful for her enthusiasm and dedication to the project.

“I don’t think I would have been able to do this as well if I didn’t have her wonderful support and collaboration,” she said.

The project will launch within the Central Florida communities, with the hopes of expanding it across the U.S. in the future.

“The sky’s the limit,” Grace said. “So we’ll see.”

Seabreeze’s boys soccer team was knocked out of the 5A final four contention with a 3-0 loss to the Stanton Blue Devils Tuesday, Feb. 23.

Both teams were energized and ready as the whistle blew for the Region 1 final kickoff. Within the first five minutes, Seabreeze’s number two scorer with 13 season goals, Noah Korfant, was taken out of the game with a knee injury. Down an experienced forward, the Sandcrabs were in for an uphill battle against the Blue Devils, known for their defensive style of play. They did not disappoint, as defender Ethan Alesch maneuvered the ball into position for a highly contested first goal.

S ta n to n co n t i n u e d i ts onslaught, scoring two more unanswered goals prior to halftime. In an attempt to offset Seabreeze’s goal deficit, coach Jon Kinsler changed the team’s tactics at halftime.

“We are going to our 3-3-4 (formation). Gabe you are going to be in the middle now with Myers,” explained coach Kinsler. “Go play.

It’s a game you love. I love it. Do you love it? Show me.”

In the last five minutes of the game, University of North Florida commit Chance Shamlou maneuvered inside the box for a cross to the middle, which was deflected

by a Blue Devils defender. Shamlou continued his runs on goal during the second half up until the very last seconds of the game, to no avail. Shamlou wrapped up the season as the Sandcrabs’ lead scorer with 15 for the season as Hogan Michael finishes as the team’s lead in assists with 10.

“Tough game tonight,” Seabreeze coach Rob Bowling stated simply. “Boys were obviously upset, but we are so proud of them. Going to miss that bunch.”

Seabreeze’s Lady Sandcrabs’ soccer team fell to the Ponte Vedra Sharks’ attack in double overtime for a 1-0 loss in the 5A state championship semifinals on Friday, Feb. 19.

The Sandcrabs and the Sharks met in a head-to-head battle with the goal of moving on to the 5A state championship. Seabreeze coaches prepared their team with intense training sessions and extensive video coverage of the class 5A No. 1 team, Ponte Vedra, to study its playing style.

The first half showcased both teams’ defensive finesse and intensity, but also highlighted many missed opportunities to score. At halftime, the board remained scoreless as each team convened to refresh strategies.

“We have to be careful with our touches, in the middle of the field, especially,” head coach Christine Goebel said. “We cannot hold the ball for too long. We found that out. The person with the ball should not dictate what everyone else does. Everyone else should dictate to that person.

With less than two minutes left on the clock, a play by the Sharks’ right wing left Seabreeze off balance, the defenders out of position and their goalie vulnerable. Ponte Vedra’s Tamlyn Parkes seized the opportunity and kicked the winning goal for the Sharks.

“Our girls did a great job against the No. 1 ranked team and handled it very well,” coach Alex Perez said. “Of course, the girls were sad but are mentally ready for what’s coming next season.”

Seabreeze goalkeeper Avery Dellinger was named Player of the Game with 7 saves in her 100 minutes of game time. The Lady Sandcrabs wrapped up the season with an impressive 9-3-2 record.

Artful connections OMAM begins art classes to help grandparents bond with grandchildren JARLEENE ALMENAS ASSOCIATE EDITOR

In this era of Zoom and social distancing, the ability to spend quality time has been a struggle for many families, especially across long distances.

But, a new series of classes by the Ormond Memorial Art Museum is hoping to help individuals, particularly grandparents, remain connected with the youngest of family members. The “Quality Time Online” series is aimed at educating adults on how to teach children different elements of art. Participants will create a project during the classes that they can then recreate with their grandchildren online.

Taught by Ormond Beach artist Colleen Flannery Caceres, the class encourages participants to format their work into a card. That way, they can mail their grandchildren a letter and exchange their creations.

“It gives them a tangible thing that they can hold on to that was from the other person,” Caceres said. “That’s really special.”

Caceres, who homeschools her own children, said she came up with the class because the pandemic has affected the ability for families to get together in the ways they used to. For many grandparents, there is a disconnect that cannot be bridged through phone calls or FaceTime. Sometimes in those conversations, you run out of things to say, Caceres said.

This class provides them with an activity to do together.

“If a grandparent has an idea,

has a full understanding of what they want to bring to the child, of what the project is, they don’t actually have to use that many words at all,” Caceres said. “Certainly art invokes emotions and feeling, and so looking at the colors and experiencing what we’re doing in art while in the company, even if it’s online, with our grandparents, it really plucks your heart strings.”

A GRANDPARENT’S PERSPECTIVE

Local grandparent Judith Hollo has taken several classes at OMAM. The January “Quality Time Online” class has been her favorite.

Caceres was very interactive, Hollo said, and gave special consideration to the circumstances surrounding Hollo’s grandchildren, of which she has 16 throughout the U.S., and tailored the class to her needs.

Several of the grandchildren are being homeschooled, and Hollo has been helping with their education, virtually, to lend a hand to their parents, who are working from home. The class gave her great ideas to keep her grandkids engaged.

“It’s a great way to connect with them,” Hollo said. “It guarantees a time slot several times a week.

Generally, if you’re not doing an activity with them, time goes by and you find out you haven’t talked to them for a couple of weeks.

The online programs, when you are teaching the kids, or doing an activity with the kids on a regular basis, it increases your time with them.”

Colleen Flannery Caceres has worked as a freelance artist for 30 years.

MAKING CONNECTIONS

One of Caceres’ earliest memories is watching her mom create art.

“I remember she would have us sit, and she would draw our portraits, and I would think, ‘When I grow up, I want to draw like my mom,’” she recalled.

That quality time may have helped her love of art blossom, but Caceres said you don’t have to be an artist to participate in the class. In fact, you don’t have to be a grandparent either. The class is open to anyone who wishes they could spend more time with a child in their life, whether that be an aunt, uncle, or even a homeschooling parent who wishes to increase their child’s exposure to art.

Hearing stories from the participants is endearing, Caceres said.

“I just adore it,” Caceres said. “I’m grateful that they’re spending time with me so we can help them better connect with their grandkids.”

AdventHealth saw another decrease in COVID-19 patients this week, the latest signal that the hospital system can resume more elective procedures as it transitions back to “green” status, Dr. Neil Finkler, chief medical officer of acute care services for the Central Florida Division, said at the Feb. 18 AdventHealth Morning Briefing.

The hospital system’s Central Florida Division tallied about 500 patients with the coronavirus Feb. 18, down from a peak in midJanuary of more than 800.

“What we are saying is we are functioning as a normal facility,” Finkler said. “We are all systems go.”

Finkler was joined by Dr. Kevin Accola, cardiac thoracic surgeon, who discussed how much is still unknown about COVID-19’s effects on the heart.

The global pandemic caused a drop in people seeking treatment for cardiac symptoms, but heart disease remains a top health concern in the United States.

Accola urged people to follow a balanced heart-healthy diet.
