BRIEFS Chateau Mar sold for $3.1 million Another beachfront resort in Ormond Beach has been sold to new ownership.

Volusia County Property Appraiser records show that Chateau Mar Beach Resort, located at 507 S. Atlantic Ave. was sold by Beachfront Hojo LLC to 507 Ormond Beach LLC — a company with a mailing address out of Smyrna, Georgia — for $3.1 million in December 2020.

The sale of the 51-room contemporary boutique hotel was facilitated by the Atlanta arm of Collier International’s National Hospitality Team, according to a press release.

The Chateau Mar hotel was built in 1968 and was recently renovated. It reopened in May 2020.

“Hotel numbers should see a spike in the second half of this year, but we also expect distressed hotel sales to increase as well,” said Helen Zaver, of Colliers International’s National Hospitality Group.

A neighborhood meeting for a new assisted living facility in Ormond Beach is scheduled for 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11.

Volusia County is continuing to explore avenues to purchase a $1.3 million, 36-acre parcel of land found within the Plantation Oaks development by the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail.

Deputy County Manager Suzanne Konchan updated the County Council on this undertaking at its meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 2. She said there is a “considerable amount of staff activity” as they look at the possibility of acquiring the land, originally slated for 76

residential lots, using different funding sources. One such source is ECHO; Konchan said the county is updating a study to later present to the Historic Preservation Board.

“Because of the 90-day timeline that we’re working under, we are trying to put together funding resources that we know could be obtainable within a short period of time.”

In addition, she said the county is examining the possibility of using impact

fees to buy the property as well as looking at every grant application staff finds, and is sent by members of the public.

New Smyrna Beach resident Rebecca Chaffee spoke at the start of the meeting and outlined several of these grants, including grants from the Trust for Public Land in Florida, the Land and Water Conservation Fund, and the possibility to turn the Loop into a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Suicide and mental health of police officers aren’t often discussed. But Ormond Beach Police Chief Jesse Godfrey said his department is going to change that, starting with a long overdue recognition.

Almost 15 years after the death of Evidence Custodian Royden Pearson, officers gathered in the department’s training room on Wednesday, Jan. 27, to honor the legacy left behind by his 25 years of civilian service to the force.

Pearson, who began working at OBPD in 1981, died on April 19, 2006. He was a 20-year Navy veteran who served as a medic during the Vietnam War, and his actions earned him the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and a combat action ribbon. Once employed with the city, he began his career patrolling the beach and later became a community service officer before he took on the role of evidence custodian.

A memorial plaque, unveiled at the ceremony, now adorns a wall near the officer entrance to the Police Department.

Why did the department choose to recognize him now?

Godfrey said it was never too late to do the right thing.

“When we post this plaque at the end of the hallway, it’s down

there to honor him, but it’s in a public place for our officers to see it every day when they walk in so they’ll never forget him,” Godfrey said.

“One of the things we don’t like to talk about is police suicide, or first responder suicide,” Godfrey said. “And he was a member of our family ... We have to do better as first responders to be able to number one, talk about it.”

Many of the officers who spoke during the ceremony shared heartfelt memories of their time with Pearson, a member of the former Ormond Beach Union Church.

One was Capt. D.W. Smith, who said Pearson was one of his first bosses when he was hired 25 years ago. He said Pearson turned a “Gen X whippersnapper” like him into the disciplined officer he is today. Then, directing his comments to Officer Robert Pearson, Smith said he saw the same attention to detail, dedication to service and willingness to go above and beyond as Roy Pearson had.

“That was always your dad’s spirit, and he lives on through you,” Smith said. “I’m proud to have worked with your dad, and I’m very proud to work with you.”

He thanked those who attended the ceremony, and said that he was glad this recognition came to fruition, giving special thanks to Community Service Officer Shannon Champion for her help. He always believed his dad should’ve been recognized a long time ago, he said, and it had eaten away at him over the years.

Godfrey assured those in the room that something like this would never happen again, as long as he was chief and the younger officers in the room were still in the department. Programs are in the works to be implemented to prevent tragedies like Pearson’s,

Sgt. Michelle Willis said moving forward, they don’t want anything tragic like Pearson’s passing to occur within their department.

She spoke of resources available to officers regarding wellness, both financial, physical and mental health-related, and encouraged officers to reach out for help when it is needed.

“We see tragedy, and we see all the things that we know that we have to handle, and we handle them each in a different way, but there may come a time where that heaviness is too much,” Willis said.

When she began her career with OBPD, Willis said Pearson was already working in evidence. She also held fond memories.

“I can tell you that there was not a day, or an interaction that you ever went with Roy that he didn’t make you smile,” Willis said. “I don’t think ‘just smile’ does it justice — I’m talking belly laugh. I can see his smile. That’s what resonates in my memory from him.”

Volusia eyes transition to state’s preregistration system for COVID-19 vaccine slots by Feb. 15 Residents may still preregister now.

Appointments will be made using Eventbrite or by calling the Citizens Information Center a 866-3450345. Registration opens at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 3.

County Councilwoman Heather Post urged residents to preregister now on the state website.

“The fact that the county is not actively assigning those registrations for another week or two certainly does not mean that you cannot get in queue,” Post said.

“And it’s not going to delay you getting your vaccination if you go ahead and sign up now.”

Currently, only individuals 65 and older, longterm care facility staff and residents, health care personnel with direct patient contact, and individuals deemed extremely vulnerable to COVID-19 are eligible to receive the vaccine through the state preregistration system. “[The system] we have now has been very frustrating for our citizens and we want to alleviate that as much as we can,” Pozzo said.

In-season beach ramps now open

Summer lifeguard tryouts to begin

Thanks to sunshine and clear skies, vehicular beach access ramps converted to the inseason schedule Saturday, Jan. 30 — a few days earlier than the traditional Feb. 1 transition. The Crawford Road beach ramp in New Smyrna Beach will remain a Pass Holder Only Express ramp to allow quick access to those with a current annual beach pass.

In-season, 23 vehicular beach access ramps operate daily from Ormond Beach to New Smyrna Beach, with multiple entry lanes at heavily trafficked locations. To view the in-season beach ramp map, visit Volusia.org/beachdriving.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, beachgoers are asked to refrain from gathering in large groups and continue to observe social distancing guidelines.

Pass-holders are reminded that annual passes are valid for 365 days from the purchase date, rather than by calendar year.

Additionally, annual pass-holders who purchased their pass prior to March 20, 2020, received 57 days added to their pass to compensate for the days that the beach ramps were closed to vehicles due to the coronavirus outbreak.

If an annual pass holder visits the beach or inlet park within 30 days of their current pass expiring, the toll attendant will provide notice on when the pass is planned to expire. The pass holder will have the option of renewing their pass on the spot or the next time they visit the beach or inlet park.

Volusia County’s Beach Safety Division is hiring lifeguards to help keep beachgoers safe this summer. Upcoming tryouts are mandatory for those interested in a position.

Swim tryout dates and locations are from 8 a.m. to noon Feb. 27 and March 13 at the Ormond Beach YMCA, 500 Sterthaus Drive, Ormond Beach, and 8 a.m. to noon March 6 and 20 at the Port Orange YMCA, 4701 City Center Parkway, Port Orange.

Applicants must be at least 16 on or before June 1 and be able to swim 500 meters freestyle in under 10 minutes, swim 50 yards freestyle in under 30 seconds, and run a half-mile in under 3 minutes, 15 seconds. Candidates considered for hiring will undergo a background check, physical and drug screening.

Starting pay is $12.74 per hour.

There is a $500 incentive for lifeguards if they meet criteria specifying number of weekend work days over their first summer.

Those who wish to participate in the selection process must attend one of the 2021 tryouts, as well as Volusia County Beach Safety’s lifeguard recruit class (mandatory 48-hour ocean rescue training). Additionally, participants must attend a 40-hour first responder class and CPR course or provide proof of equivalence.

While Volusia County is not yet actively using the statewide preregistration system for COVID-19 vaccinations, officials say the public should still sign up for future use.

Public Protection Director Joe Pozzo said at the County Council meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 2, that they are currently awaiting access to the platform, having applied on two separate occasions (Jan. 15 and Jan. 21). He clarified misperceptions that Volusia opted out of participating in the Share Care system. In a press release issued by the county on Feb. 1, it explained that transitioning to the platform “is not an immediate process and requires changes to both the registration process and on-site operations.”

Changes include receiving tablets from the state, as well as new training for staff, Pozzo explained to the council.

“Our plan, if we can get everything in place, is to put that system online for the week of Feb. 15,” he said.

The myvaccine.fl.gov site was announced on Friday, Jan. 29, and offers preregistration for the vaccine in all 67 counties in Florida.

Ormond’s financial push to save Osceola ASSOCIATE EDITOR

The city of Ormond Beach is vowing to commit up $1.8 million to save Osceola Elementary.

Though the Volusia County School Board decided in August 2020 to close Osceola Elementary in favor of merging the student body with Ortona Elementary to the south, Ormond Beach is seeking a second chance. As it stands, a new school is planned to be constructed at the Ortona site to house the combined 600 students, and last month, the School Board began discussing the logistics in moving Ortona students into a “portable city” at Osceola’s campus during Ortona’s construction.

But Ormond Beach city commissioners hope that with School Board member Anita Burnette now on the board, other members could reverse their decision. City Manager Joyce Shanahan already told the School Board the city would pay for any needed stormwater work, and now it is ready to bear the full cost of housing all estimated 400 Osceola students at Ortona in portables, which could total somewhere between $1.5 million and $1.8 million, according to discussion had the commission meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 2.

Osceola’s percentage of disadvantaged students is technically lower at 71%, but with double the student population at 406, that comes out to about 288 students.

Mayor Bill Partington said that every factor points to saving Osceola. He said when Ormond residents voted to approve the school district’s half-cent sales tax, they were doing so in favor of improving their neighborhood schools, not closing them.

“What benefit is that to Osceola Elementary School?” Partington said. “Extinguishing it from the face of the Earth?... I think it was a lie for the people who voted for that half-cent sales tax, who thought they were going to get some upgrades to their schools.”

School Board member Carl Persis was asked to speak before the commission to give them a rundown of how the board arrived at the decision, and what Ormond Beach could do next. Persis was the lone vote in August against choosing Ortona.

If both schools were located in Ormond Beach, Osceola would still be the right choice, Persis said.

“I am hopeful that when they see some of the new information, that maybe one — just one — will say, ‘I see this differently now than I did then.’” Persis said.

The city will hold a special meeting Monday, Feb. 8, to pass the resolution on committing city funds to saving Osceola Elementary. The School Board was scheduled to hold a workshop on the subject on Feb. 9, but it was canceled Feb. 3.

BRIEFS Volusia County Schools: fill out free and reduced meal application

Fewer Volusia County Schools families have completed the Free and Reduced Meal Application this year, and that could negatively impact federal funding for public schools with a high poverty ranking.

To ensure those schools continue to receive federal Title I funding, it is imperative for families to fill out the Free and Reduced Meal Application no later than Friday, Feb. 12. Even if those families are not sure they qualify to access free/reduced-price meals, they should complete an application.

It’s easy to apply online and takes only a few minutes, and the application is available in English or Spanish. The application is at: https://www.vcsedu. org/schoolwaycafe/free-and-reduced-meal-applications. (If you don’t have access to a computer, all schools will have a computer available for you to fill out the application.)

The Florida Department of Education, through which the federal funding flows, will determine the Poverty Ranking of all public schools based on applications completed by the Feb. 12 deadline. The Poverty Ranking will determine which schools qualify for Title I funding for next school year.

Currently there are 44 Title I schools in Volusia County.

Kent, who attended Osceola Elementary as a child himself, remarked on Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry’s comments on equity during the Jan. 26.

School Board meeting, where he claimed Ortona students would be more adversely impacted should the School Board change their mind and choose the Osceola site for a new school.

Ormond Beach has equity issues, too, Kent said.

Both Osceola and Ortona are Title 1 schools, meaning they both receive additional resources from the state due to its number of economically disadvantaged students.

According to 2018-2019 data by the Florida Department of Education, Ortona’s disadvantaged students accounted for 82.9% of its 203 students. That comes out

ark Geallis has a vision.

For the past 12 years, he has been working to find solutions to end homelessness in Volusia County.

It’s a mission that led him to serve as the executive director of Halifax Urban Ministries for three years before becoming First Step Shelter’s first executive director prior to the shelter’s opening.

Now, he is working toward an initiative he hopes will help those homeless individuals who simply need an affordable place to live: a tiny home RV village.

Homeless 2 Home residents would pay an incomebased rent of between $250 and $400 monthly, according to the initiative’s website. Geallis states the plan is to acquire “properly zoned land or acreage away from densely populated residential areas” to eventually support a minimum of 30 units at the start, with the opportunity to grow up to 150 units. He aims for the village to be funded 100% by donors, foundations and the revenue generated by the residents themselves.

“Homeless 2 Home wants to create a village where people of extreme low income can live with dignity, stay permanently if they choose and form a sense of community,” Geallis said.

The Ormond Beach Observer recently spoke with Geallis about Homeless 2 Home about his vision.

Q: What motivated you to begin Homeless 2 Home now?

A: That’s kind of a funny story.

I thought I retired last year.

Between starting my own Social Security and COVID, I stayed home for a year. Years ago, I was a website developer, so I started making some websites, and I had the Homeless 2 Home domain name purchased a couple of years ago and never did anything with it. I threw up a website with my vision, and it got some traction on Facebook and got some media to begin calling, and it’s kind of taken a life of its own in the last month.

Q: Why choose tiny homes and RVs for the village?

A: As I was taking a road trip in between homeless service positions three or four years ago, I visited Community First Village in Austin, Texas. It is a wonderful model of what I’d love to do.

They had about 200 residents at that time. They’re now in Phase II and growing to 400 residents, but they have a mix of tiny

homes and RVs. They have many shared community things like a big cookout area, a small outdoor theater where they watch movies together. They have a general store where some of their residents can work and others sell their art and things like that…

I just loved what I saw there. It was faith-based, and the people that put it together have done it without government funding, which also attracts me.

Before [First Step Shelter], I worked for a purely faith-based organization, and that’s more of the way to follow my heart.

I think when government gets involved too deeply, it just mucks things up and slow things down and too many strange regulations come into place which stifle creativity and innovation, and my idea is certainly innovative for the poor and homeless.

Q: Do you have a specific location you would like to build the village?

A: I have been thinking that, even though there’s 16 munici-

palities in Volusia County, I would look for some unincorporated area of Volusia County that is not in a municipality, so that I don’t have to go through the regulation and registration with both the county and a municipal government. But, some people have suggested, and some people from local municipalities have reached out and said they would like to talk. So maybe Daytona Beach is a possibility.

I hope to find a parcel of land that’s either in a more industrial area, blighted area, or out in the country so to speak that will not rile up the neighbors and can be embraced by the neighbors, hopefully.

Q: What objections from citizens are you expecting to have to address?

A: The objections are going to be [about] where it’s located, and I hope to find a location that will minimize the objections. The other objection that we always have when dealing with the poor and homeless in our community is people who say things like, “Oh they should just get a job. Why should I help them? I work hard myself.” And those objections really aren’t valid in this project.

Q: How has your nonprofit background prepared you to take on this initiative?

A: Very well, I think. It’s let me understand the objections of the negative people. It’s showed me how to deal with government and high-level donors, and most of all, it’s shown me the different gaps in services throughout the community that become causes of homelessness and continue to keep people homeless, whereas I know this is a big piece of the puzzle to end homelessness for a select group of people.

Q: When did you realize that your heart was in helping the homeless community?

A: I came back from a mission trip to Haiti, and I was on the beach watching this huge fireworks display that I had read cost us $70,000-$80,000 as a community, and that same day I had driven along Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Boulevard and through some of the rougher neighborhoods in town, and God just laid it on my heart that

my mission field was going to be right here in my own backyard. That as a community, our priorities were kind of messed up. Taking care of fireworks but not taking care of the poor among us, and that’s the day I decided to focus on this. I started my own little outreach feeding the poor and homeless at City Island Park. It was illegal. I am of strong faith, and one day, the police came and busted our little homeless initiative that me and another friend, Jeremy, did down there in the park each week.

The next day, Halifax Urban Ministries called me and asked me if I wanted to come onboard to their staff. I took that as affirmation from God and direction that I no longer had to be an outlaw serving the homeless folks, but I could get onboard with a thriving ministry and do things within the law.

Q: What is one thing that you want the public to know about Homeless 2 Home?

A: I want them to know that this is something that is desperately needed in our community, not just for homeless people who have economic issues, but for elderly people and disabled people. People over 50 are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population over the last two years, and I think COVID is only going to increase those numbers. I call it the silver tsunami. I think we have thousands of homeless elderly people about to hit the streets, and I believe that Homeless 2 Home ...is going to be a model for the future to do similar communities right here in Volusia and Flagler County, and hopefully, communities like this will spring up all across the nation.

Save the Loop. The clock is ticking.

Dear Editor: Once again, the Loop is threatened because of development that looks forward but forgets to look backward. Development that does not consider the Loop’s importance to the area. The Loop is a unique, scenic drive enjoyed by locals (I call it my “Happy Place”) and visitors alike, but it is also environmentally sensitive and historically important.

Currently, a homegrown developer with a local’s appreciation of the area has offered a tract of 36 acres that would provide a much needed buffer between Old Dixie Highway and upcoming development. However, there is a very short window of opportunity

for commitment.

I repeat: Very short.

The county must move quickly, applying for numerous available grants. The grassroots group Dream Green Volusia has been encouraging the county to make this purchase happen since last summer. Dream Green has determined the land is available, the purchase price is reasonable and, as is usually the case, that the clock is ticking. We all need to contact our representatives on the County Council and encourage them to recognize value in the purchase of this vital piece of land and pursue outside funds that are set aside for just this kind of thing.

Save Osceola Elementary School Dear Editor: The Volusia County School Board hired BRPH Architects to compare the sites of both Ortona and Osceola Elementary Schools. Ortona scored a 28 and Osceola a 27. On what factors was this study based?

Studies are only as good as what information is requested.

Did the study include any of the following to be taken into consideration?

1. Number of families having to change schools 2. Ability of future growth 3. Centralized location 4. Registered sex offenders near the schools These factors are critical in making this decision.

Osceola has 406 students vs Ortona that has 203. Osceola

has 13 acres vs Ortona that has 11. Over five school years, Osceola’s population has declined 6% vs Ortona that has declined 11%. In a one mile radius of each location, Osceola has three registered sex offenders versus 13 around Ortona.

In closing, based on the information above, Osceola is clearly the right location for Elementary students on beachside. Less students and families would be displaced, there is more room for future growth, and it is a safer location to educate our children.

It’s no secret that Palm Coast is slowly, but surely, becoming a more popular place to live.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the population in Flagler County grew by 20.3% (or 115,000 people) between 2010 and 2019, and even during a global pandemic, 240,256 people still moved to Florida in 2020. If these trends tell us anything, it’s that Palm Coast will need to provide more housing - and fast - to keep up with incoming residents.

In addition to bringing more medical jobs and larger educational institutions to the city, Douglas Property & Development President Jeff Douglas knows that ample housing is another necessary piece of the economic puzzle.

“There’s simply no place to live,” he said. “If you get hired

by ACI or Coastal Cloud or another group wants to relocate here, you’ve got to have immediate housing, and it just didn’t exist.”

Until now, that is.

In 2019 DPD facilitated the

development of 321 apartments in two complexes located in Town Center: Central Landings and The Palms at Town Center.

And more housing projects are in the works.

Paytas Homes will have 208 single-family homes under construction by the end of 2021 in a new neighborhood called The Gables at Town Center. According to their website, the specifics of these residences will be comparable to their other Palm Coast developments, ranging between 1,800 - 2,800 square feet with pricing starting in the high $200,000’s.

Toll Brothers is currently undergoing the permitting process for 160 single-family and paired villa homes. According to Douglas, the overall goal is to provide more housing options for current and future residents.

“If you want the village lifestyle, it’s going to be a little denser. If you want more space, you’ve got the C section. If you want to walk everywhere, Town Center is your place. You have choices.”

Another key demographic that is in desperate need of choices is those who required affordable housing. Flagler

County Administrator Jerry Cameron says that unless someone can get into a two- or three-bedroom residence for $800 a month, it doesn’t qualify as affordable housing.

“For the average entry-level person just going into the workforce, it will be a long time before they can afford $1,200 a month,” Cameron said. “And when you’re heavy in tourism, you have a workforce that tends to be in the low-end of the income spectrum. Those guys need a place to live.”

Douglas agrees.

“You want someone to be there when you need medical services, food preparation, or help at Publix,” he said. “Where are we going to put those people?”

Because of the lack of affordable housing in the area, Cameron said Flagler county is

currently developing an affordable housing ordinance that will provide developers with incentives to meet that need.

“The affordable housing issue in the county doesn’t respect boundaries. It’s ubiquitous,” Cameron said. “Flagler County, in the last decade or so, has been a very rapid growth community. In those cases, affordable housing tends to fall behind while middle and upper-income homes are selling as fast as you can build them.”

Douglas says that the families who want more property and space have plenty of options. It’s up to developers to create those same options for other lifestyles, income levels, and family sizes.

“You’ve got these big lot communities, which is great,” he said. “We’re trying to springboard off of those projects to fill the other [housing] gaps that need attention.”

HITCHING A RIDE 8:31 p.m. — 1300 block of West Granada Boulevard Information. A 30-year-old Ormond Beach woman was lined up in her vehicle in the drive-thru lane of a local dining establishment, about to pay for her food, when she noticed a man walk past her car near the window.

According to the incident report, the woman rolled up her window out of caution. Soon thereafter, she received her food and was about to drive away, when the same man stepped in front of her car. The woman told police the man stared at her for a minute and began to reach down as if to unbuckle his belt.

She looked away, and when she looked back, the man was no longer there. She could not be sure if the man did anything in her presence.

Police found the man in a nearby parking lot. He told officers he was walking to Daytona, and after a records check concluded he had no warrants or trespass warnings, police gave him a ride to Clyde Morris Boulevard and LPGA Boulevard.

UNWANTED ART 10:05 a.m. — 2000 block of West Granada Boulevard Vandalism. A Christian preschool was vandalized with vulgar language and “miscellaneous doodles,” a crime that the director of the school told police could have happened anytime during a span of four days.

The incident report states multiple picnic tables, signs and walls were spray-painted with phrases including “hi” and “smoke break.” The director told

police their cameras in this area had been out of battery for a while and would not be helpful.

She suspected “neighborhood juveniles” were the culprits, and said the church did not wish to press charges.

NO TRESPASSING 10:47 p.m. — First block of Thompson Creek Road Criminal mischief. Police arrested a 55-year-old Ormond Beach man who caused over $1,000 in damage to garage bay doors at a local business.

The man was seen on surveillance video walking to a locked privacy fence, where he pulled a fence post away from the building to enter the area. Police note that the fencing is approximately 8 feet tall and that it was clearly marked with “No Trespassing” signs. The damage to the garage bay door appears to be caused by someone trying to pry it open, according to the police report.

The man told police that he went through the fenced area to access a dumpster after his car broke down. He said the fence post was already pulled away from the building and that he thought there were woods on the other side of the fence, and that when he realized this was not accurate, he turned around and left.

He denied attempting to open the garage bay doors, but he was still taken to jail.

OBMS teacher named Mathcounts Coach of the Year

or Ormond Beach Middle School math teacher Natalie Demchak, the title of “coach” comes with a lot of algebra and geometry.

Demchak has been coaching Mathcounts, a nationwide middle school math competition, for 12 years. The quiz bowl-style competition is something her Mathcounts team practices for

every year starting around labor day. There are tryouts, timed tests and of course, lots of math, but when competition day rolls around in February, Demchak’s team is ready. So is she.

“I always love the competition day, because then I get to see the other coaches from the other schools and the guys that help out and volunteer through the Florida Engineering Society,” Demchak said. “We’ve kind of all become kind of like a family.”

In fall of 2020, Demchak was named the 2020 Florida Mathcounts Coach of the Year by the Florida Engineering Society. She had been nominated by the Daytona Beach chapter, and according to a Volusia County Schools press release, the nomination noted her team’s consistent Top 4 finishes at the chapter level competition. It also recognized Demchak for her passion for mentoring students, reflected in their enthusiasm to compete every year. Demchak received a plaque and $750.

That plaque arrived at her house unexpectedly. When she received the box in the mail, she had no idea what it was, nor where it came from. She then noticed the name, recognized it as someone from the state level of Mathcounts, and wondered if the box contained T-shirts.

Demchak opened it, and instead of T-shirts, she found a letter and a plaque congratulating her on the recognition. It was certainly a surprise, as she said she never thought she would ever be considered for such an award.

“I just thought, ‘Me? Really, me?’” Demchak said. “So I’m still kind of in shock.”

teacher growing up, but once she got to high school, people would tell her that she would make a great educator. At the time, Demchak was giving horse riding lessons, and while doing so, realized she was good at explaining concepts to others.

“It was kind of a discovery as I went through,” Demchak said. “It was not something that I always knew I was going to do. I kind of feel like I maybe fell into it by chance, but I’m definitely glad I’m here.”

While she was an elementary education major in college, she has never actually taught at the elementary level. It’s always been middle school, and she’s thankful for this. She loves teaching middle school students. “[Demchak] is a warm, accessible, enthusiastic, and caring Mathcounts coach,” said OBMS Math Chair Kristen Pirkey, co-coach for the school’s Mathcounts team, in the district’s press release. “She always engages the students in learning in a fun way while encouraging healthy competition. Students feel safe to take risks because she makes her classroom a safe learning environment. I am continuously impressed with the amount of time and energy she puts into making sure all students at Ormond Beach Middle School are successful.”

team of students have had to learn how to navigate this new platform. Less kids also tried out, a result of the lower in-person student enrollment, Demchak said.

Still, the competitive spirit lives on.

“Whether or not those kids are in the same math class or not, I think they almost look for each other to try to compete even outside of the Mathcounts,” Demchak said. “So I think they’ve built some friendships maybe they wouldn’t have had without it.”

And inside the classroom, Demchak likes to see the ‘aha’ moments in her students, particularly from the ones who are already good at math and have that perception that there’s no way Demchak can show them something new.

“They come in like, ‘Oh I’ve already seen that. I already know how to do that. Oh that’s really easy,’” Demchak said. “But when we get to things that are hard and they get it and they’re somewhat impressed by it — I just really love those moments.”

Volusia County Schools Superintendent Dr. Scott Fritz returned to work on Monday, Feb. 1, following a medical leave, ready to lead VCS for the second half of the 20202021 school year and beyond.

An experienced educational

leader with a strong track record of success, Fritz joined VCS in December 2019 and served through last July until a cancer diagnosis. He received treatment and has fully recovered.

One of his first priorities will be the presentation of a new strategic plan to the School Board this month. The new plan’s goals focus on student learning and social-emotional health to ensure every student reaches his or her full potential. Metrics are tied to each goal, and progress will be monitored to drive improvement.

“This has been an unusual year, but we are focused on students and their success and well-being despite of those challenges,” Fritz said. “We must be strategic in creating a culture that engages all

students in high levels of learning every day. Our journey has already begun, but there is more we can and will do to increase achievement for all our children.”

Fritz said he is grateful to his colleagues and community for their support during his illness.

“I am indebted to Deputy Superintendent Dr. Carmen Balgobin for her leadership during my leave, and thankful to the School Board for guiding us so effectively through this challenging year,” he said. “I am honored to lead this great school district and am happy to be back at work alongside the thousands of dedicated professionals who serve the children and families of our county.”

DAR CELEBRATES ITS LOCAL ESSAY WINNERS The Capt. James Ormond Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently honored its two local student essay contest winners.

For this year’s essay, students in fifth through eighth grade were asked to imagine living in Boston and, after witnessing the Boston Massacre,

describe their families’ discussion and what role it played in organizing the colonists against the British king and parliament. The winners were Hinson Middle School eighth graders Olivia Kane, who won second place, and Tilanna Peterson, who won first place.

UNITED WAY’S GIVING CAMPAIGN

As the need for services increases, and charitable giving decreases due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties has been tasked with finding creative ways to fund those services.

In response, United Way has launched the Fill the Gap Match campaign. Leadership donors — including two anonymous donors and the Root Organization — are committed to matching up to $150,000 in donations to United Way between Feb. 1 and March 31, according to a press release.

“We are optimistic that gifts from the community will help us reach the $300,000 figure, which will help ‘fill the gap’ in support of critical services.” said Courtney Edgcomb, president of United Way of VolusiaFlagler Counties. “We are grateful to the donors whose matching gifts are stimulating giving at such a critical time.”

The Ormond Beach Police Foundation presented Officer Keith Walker with a $500 check on Friday, Jan. 29, in honor of his retirement after 25 years of service with OBPD. Walker most recently served as the department’s training coordinator and public information officer. According to a press release, the Ormond Beach Police Foundation aims to provide the department with financial resources for training, equipment and technology that goes beyond the city’s budget.

It also offers financial support to families of fallen officers and special recognition for outstanding service.

LIONS SERVE COMMUNITY DURING JANUARY Taking all COVID-19 precautions, members of the Ormondby-the-Sea Lions Club have stayed active during the month of January, according to a club announcement.

Six members participated in the Lions Club’s quarterly Adopt-A-Highway and Adopta-Beach programs, and they cleaned sections of A1A and the beach. In addition, on Jan. 23, the club held its annual gently-used book and yard sale benefitting the St. Brendan’s

Catholic Church Outreach program. Thanks to the generosity of the Ormond-by-the-Sea community and visitors, the club was able to donate $700, plus bags of groceries, to help fill the food pantry at St. Brendan’s Church.

The Lions Club meets at 6:30 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of every month at Alfies Restaurant, located at 1666 Ocean Shore Blvd. For more information, call 4414421.

ady Buccaneers girls basketball team celebrated Senior Night with a 53-48 win against the Apopka Blue Darters on Friday, Jan. 29 at the Vince Carter Athletic Center.

Mainland’s Isys Grady out tipped Apopka’s Dh’nizia Turner for the jump ball but Apopka’s starters hit the court running, controlling the game immediately. Six minutes into the first quarter, the Buccaneers were held to 4 points to the Darters’ 15. Bucs finished the quarter with a 17-12 shortfall. Both teams battled in the second quarter holding each

other to single digits forcing a 21-21 tie going into half-time.

Senior Jymea Jackson kicked it up a notch for the Lady Buccaneers with 12 points and 4 rebounds while fellow senior, Grady, followed it up with 10 points and 5 rebounds. Mainland finished with the win and an astounding 18-1 season.

“No one thought we would end the season 18-1. But it was possible,” said head coach Brandon Stewart.

For Stewart, Deepak Chopra’s quote expressed it the best: “When you allow yourself to be unpredictable, you step from the known into the unknown, where anything is possible.”

Stewart will be losing five players this year: Isys Grady, Jymea Jackson, Lauren Troutman, Hendley Welch and Jacqueline Williams, all graduating seniors who have contributed to Mainland’s nearly perfect season. Lady Buccaneers head into 6A District 4 playoffs on Wednesday, Feb. 3.

Lady Sandcrabs dominate Panthers in playoffs

T

he Lady Sandcrabs dominated the Pine Ridge Panthers with a 40-22 win in their first game of the 5A District 4 playoffs, Wednesday, Feb. 2.

Seabreeze went into the playoffs minus their top scoring point guard, Tonila Jackson. The Sandcrab standout will remain on COVID-19 quarantine throughout the playoffs. Also missing was head coach John Rogers’ entire staff, but the absences did not affect his team’s ability to play cohesively.

Shooting guard Sarah Randolph tipped the jump ball to Jasmine McGee, starting a Sandcrab points frenzy, including Deandra Rogers’ 3-pointer. The Lady Sandcrabs started the second half with a 19-11 lead.

Seabreeze poured on the points in the third quarter, holding the Panthers to a 2. Leading scorers Randolph (15 points) and Aline Braun (9), made up the difference for Jackson’s absence helping Sandcrabs to pull off the win.

“We did it. Short-handed. Understaffed. Missing our high-scoring point guard. From the beginning of the season, we have been fighting adversity,” Rogers said. “We came together. This is the first time in years that we have won a playoff game.”

house in Breakaway Trails was the top real estate transaction in Ormond Beach and Ormond-by-the-Sea for the week of Dec. 2026 in the Multiple Listing Service. Dalia Fulop, of Ormond Beach, sold 10 Little Tomoka Way to Alan Schumacher, as trustee, for $530,000.
