BRIEFS Volusia County to distribute 100,000 masks As part of the Step Up Volusia program, Volusia County Government is currently distributing 100,000 face masks at local libraries and other community locations.

According to a press release, residents may stop by any of the 10 Volusia locations to pick up two surgical face masks per person. The Ormond location is the Ormond Beach Regional Library, at 30 S. Beach St. See the online version of this story for the full list in Volusia.

The initiative will be active during regular operating hours.

The face masks are provided by the state, and the county reports it has distributed 500,000 face masks to date.

Tomoka Oaks Golf Club to be sold

Halifax Plantation amendment OK’d

The Tomoka Oaks community could soon gain new neighbors, as a sale of the golf course property is pending.

In a November 2020 newsletter by the Tomoka Oaks Homeowners Association, residents were informed that a small group of local investors were in negotiations to purchase the property, which last sold in 2011 for $1.5 million. The newsletter detailed that the buyers’ plans were to develop the land into a community of single-family homes.

The Ormond Beach Observer reached out to HOA president Sergio Faenza, who indicated that the tentative closing date of the sale is early February. The residents’ main concerns include an increase of traffic, loss of charm, as well as safety issues, but that the HOA is aiming to keep communicating with the buyers to reach common ground.

“I do understand the developer’s perspective in wanting to develop the property,” Faenza said. “I would say that as a piece of private land, as long as the property owner was abiding by the law and its current zoning

The number of homes that could occupy the 130-acre property is unknown, as it is early in the process. However, it does have a current low density residential land use, allowing for 4.3 units per acre.

The golf course sale isn’t surprising, said Faenza.

“Given the fact that I see the rapid growth, I just personally figured it was honestly a

matter of time before it happened,” Faenza said.

The city’s Planning Board discussed the future of the golf course at its Jan. 14 meeting. Chair Doug Thomas, who lives in Tomoka Oaks, said building single-family homes would be a natural course of action for the new developers.

“Something’s going to go in there,” Thomas said. “Golf courses are not a viable thing anymore.”

“This is the Loop. This is what we’re trying to preserve — not just branches over the road.”

Residents at Ormond in the Pines receive first dose of COVID-19 vaccine

ednesday, Jan. 13, marked a momentous event in the lives of Ormond in the Pines residents.

Thanks to a partnership between Holiday Retirement Communities and CVS Health, the assisted living facility located at 101 Clyde Morris Blvd. in Ormond Beach received about 400 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for its residents and staff, all administered at a clinic set up inside the building.

The vaccine was administered at no cost, and for residents like 88-year-old Shirley Mariasy, it’s a positive sign of things to come.

What is she hoping for the most?

“Hopefully that we can get back to a normal healthy and more joyful life,” Mariasy said. “We’ve been quarantined for so long, and it’s been hard. I’m alone. I just want my normal life back.”

Getting the vaccine makes her feel optimistic that she will not contract COVID-19, she said. At first, she’d been a little apprehensive abouthe vaccine, she admitted. But after discussing it with her doctor, Mariasy decided to get vaccinated.

Her hope for a return to normal life is simple. Mariasy wants to participate in the facility’s group activities again and socialize with residents. Staff feels the same.

“It’s an honor to be able to participate in stopping the spread and returning our residents’ lives

back to a more normal way of life — returning to socialization, returning to being able to see their families on a routine basis, without fear of compromising someone’s health,” said Michelle Hanner, executive director of Ormond in the Pines.

A total of 8,000 facilities across the U.S. chose to partner with CVS Health for the venture, and the company stated that it expects to complete the administration of the first doses

Residents and staff alike are looking forward to a sense of normalcy, she said — but above all, the safety of their residents is paramount.

“I’m very proud to be part of the vaccine in the early stages,” Wynn said.

Volusia plans to purchase 36 acres of land in The Loop The landowner and developer of Plantation Oaks, Parker Mynchenberg, has given the county 90 days to come up with an answer.

Volusia County has 90 days to determine the fate of a 36-acre piece of land along the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail.

The land, originally slated for 76 residential lots in Plantation Oaks, was brought to the public’s attention by Ormond Beach resident Suzanne Scheiber and Spruce Creek High School student Natalie Pilipczak, who approached developer and engineer Parker Mynchenberg in the fall regarding placing the 175-foot buffer in a conservation easement, as well as asking whether the land could be sold for conservation. The asking price is $1.3 million.

It was a proposal that Mayor Bill Partington said, in an opinion piece to the Ormond Beach Observer, should be led by Volusia County. At the council’s meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 19, the council did just that by directing staff to explore options to purchase the land.

The motion, made by District 4 Councilwoman Heather Post, whose district includes the Loop,

passed 6-0. Councilman Fred Lowry was absent.

“Once these lands are gone, they’re gone,” Post said. “We don’t have the opportunity to come back.”

The item was added to the County Council’s agenda late Friday, a factor which spurred some pushback from members of the ECHO Volusia Forever PAC, who advocated for the renewal of both the ECHO and Volusia Forever programs via referendums on the 2020 election. They passed with 72% and 75% of the vote, respectively. As chair of the PAC, Pat Northey, stated the group was not commenting on whether or not they favored the acquisition of the property, but rather the fact that the acquisition had not gone through a transparent process. Transparency was promised to voters;a past concern was the council’s use of direct allocation to speed some projects along.

“We ask that you step back, take a deep breath and honor the voters’ overwhelming approval of the referendums by ensuring that transparency, process and fairness are in place before you consider any new acquisition,” Northey said.

A direct allocation of ECHO funds (not permitted under Volusia Forever) was one of the methods presented by county staff as a way to purchase the land, as the land only met three of the 18 criteria for Volusia Forever, according to staff. they wanted to take. It is unclear whether the county will explore ECHO or Volusia Forever further, as historical and archaeological significance (due to the ruins of a historic home) was highlighted

by Chair Jeff Brower.

Scheiber reiterated during her comments that the goal has always been land conservation.

She outlined various past deadlines from different grant programs that could have been utilized to purchase the land. She also presented grants that were still available, such as a recreation grant by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

“Please don’t ignore our voices,” Scheiber said. “The public is speaking.”

Brower spoke at length regarding why this piece of land, and others need to be preserved. He said the item was placed on the agenda because it was time-sensitive. The land has not yet been cleared.

“This is the Loop,” Brower said.

“This is what we’re trying to preserve — not just branches over the road.”

Ormond Beach approves Plantation Oaks amendments

Just hours after the Volusia County Council expressed a desire to explore the purchase of a 36-acre lot in Plantation Oaks, the Ormond Beach City Commission unanimously approved three amendments to the development order, one of which lifts the agerestriction within the project’s first phase.

The other two amendments were administrative zoning changes. In addition, all homes that will be built in phase one will now be single-family homes, rather than manufactured housing, which will be limited to phase two of Plantation Oaks: That section has already been cleared and has over 30 homes built. The clubhouse is part of phase two.

Plantation Oaks landowner Parker Mynchenberg said he already has a builder for the first part of phase one, and that if the amendments are approved in a second reading, homes will be built quickly.

“We’re excited about building some houses,” said Mynchenberg at the commission meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 19.

The Plantation Oaks development, located between U.S. 1 and the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail, dates back to 1986.

At the time, the National Gardens Development of Regional Impact approved 3,930 residential units on 2,009 acres. Later,

JUST ENOUGH 3:45 a.m. — 6000 block of St. Georges Road DUI. After crashing into another vehicle, a 22-year-old Jacksonville driver told police that he had “just enough drinks to go to the club,” according to his arrest report.

The reporting officer noted that the man was stumbling, uncooperative, and smelled of

alcohol and marijuana. There was an empty bottle of cognac in the car. Police bypassed field sobriety exercises and arrested him.

SICK CRIMES 9:06 p.m. — 1500 block of Hand Avenue Fleeing/attempting to elude law enforcement. Police saw a truck exit a new subdivision loaded with metal parts and a water heater. Aware of previous burglaries in the area, they followed and tried to pull it over, but the driver did not stop, and police eventually had to drive to the address on the vehicle’s registration.

Once there, they found a man who said he hadn’t driven all day, but that his 66-year-old mother might have. A second person went to fetch her and returned without her, telling police, “She said she did it; she was sick and did not want to stop.”

The woman later affirmed that she didn’t stop because she’d had a bad experience with law enforcement in the past. She did confirm that she was sick.

Police noticed a box in the truck with the new subdivision’s name. It appeared to be full of construction items. There were also other boxes with construction hardware inside. Police towed the vehicle due to its “involvement in felonious activity.”

The woman showed symptoms of COVID-19, so instead of arresting her, police completed an affidavit.

JAIL SONGBIRD 1:23 a.m. — 300 block of West Granada Boulevard DUI. A 30-year-old man from Nashville, Tennessee, was arrested for drunk driving. Once at the jail, the man sang at the top of his lungs and laughed, police reported.

Police first encountered the man when responding to a call of a possible overdose at a local fast food joint. The man was sitting inside a truck. He had previously been unconscious, paramedics told police, but had awoken and become belligerent and aggressive with them.

The reporting officer noted that the man was incoherent, seemed confused by his questions and declined to perform sobriety tests.

En route to the jail, the man alternated between being upset about going to jail and commenting on the officer’s appearance.

He told the officer that he’d placed all the fire hydrants in Daytona Beach, the city in which he believed he found himself.

when Volusia County approved the project in 2002, the density was reduced to 1,577 residential units on 1,033 acres. It originally included a 100-foot buffer on Old Dixie Highway, but the buffer was increased to 175 feet in 2012.

Mynchenberg and his partner, the late Ronnie Bledsoe, signed an annexation agreement with the city in 2015, and the land was annexed in 2019.

A handful of residents spoke at the commission meeting, and while none were adamantly opposed to the amendments, they did voice some concerns.

One said the residents that have already bought homes in phase two (the manufactured housing portion) did so with the knowledge they would be living in an age-restricted community.

Commissioner Troy Kent asked Mynchenberg about that, and Mynchenberg said that all the phases of the development are independently gated, and thus, the age-restricted portion of Plantation Oaks will be closed off to the rest of the community.

A couple of residents also asked the commission to consider closing the entrance of Plantation Oaks Boulevard onto Old Dixie Highway. However, that road was approved as part of the 2002 development order with Volusia County.

If the county purchases the 36 lots abutting the 175-foot-buffer, more land will be preserved next to the Loop, Mayor Bill Partington said, and they could direct staff to write a letter of support to the council for this decision.

“I think [the Loop] will always look beautiful because we will make sure that it does,” City Commissioner Susan Persis said.

Preserving the Nathan Cobb Cottage Dear Editor: As a native of this area, and as one who believes strongly in preserving local history, I would like to comment on the Nathan Cobb Cottage, located on Orchard Lane in Ormond Beach.

In May 2014, long-time resident and supporter of the Ormond Beach Historical Society Tom Massfeller purchased the property, paying careful attention to its upkeep, also giving private tours to those who were interested in its history. In June 2020, Mr. Massfeller passed away, leaving the cottage, and considerable financial assets, to OBHS, an organization he trusted to oversee the cottage as they do with other historic sites they administer. Unfortunately, the Ormond Beach Historical Society, within months of assuming title, has focused only on selling the property.

The history of the cottage is unique in that the structure was built from the 1896 wreck of the Nathan F. Cobb, a three-masted schooner named after a shipbuilder from Rockland, Maine. The ship, built in 1890, was en route from Brunswick, Georgia, to New York when it encountered a Nor’easter and capsized. Its cargo, two crewmen and part of the ship itself were lost in the high seas. After drifting for four days, the hull of the vessel became grounded on a sandbar approximately 1,000 feet off the coast of Ormond Beach.

Through the efforts of the Ormond Hotel manager J.D. Price, and other locals at the time, a rescue was launched to bring the stranded crew to shore. In time, much of what was salvaged from the ship’s

hull was used to build what is now the Nathan Cobb Cottage.

Today, the spirit of the Nathan F. Cobb is alive and well at 137 Orchard St., in Ormond Beach. But now, a dark cloud hangs over it as another storm approaches.

OBHS seems to have lost its way when it comes to preserving our local history. Some board members have a shortsighted view of the cottage, preferring to sell it, rather than maintain it. For those of us who care about the fate of this historical house, we strongly urge you to take a stand in favor of delaying placing ownership into private hands, and honor the legacy of Tom Massfeller.

The Nathan Cobb Cottage is an indelible link to the history of this area, and we, as citizens of Ormond Beach, need to speak up and help save this unique historical landmark.

Preservation of Nathan Cobb Cottage is the goal Dear Editor: In response to Cathy Wharton’s letter, every member of the Board of the Ormond Beach Historical Society is committed to preserving the Nathan Cobb Cottage. Some of us want the society to keep and preserve it, and others want to sell it to someone who is fully committed to preserving it and willing to sign a contract/deed that will guarantee this and give the Historical Society the “first right of refusal” when it is sold in the future. Two people have come forward to purchase the cottage, one of whom is a

board member and the other a well-known resident. Both individuals have a history of preserving historic properties, so those who opt for selling it do not want to delay sale of the property, lest the potential purchasers lose interest. They want to follow Tom Massfeller’s example and do exactly what he did: Purchase it to ensure that it is preserved.

Tom left the NCC to the Society without leaving a written document that stipulates what he would like the society to do with it. Nevertheless, he did mention to me and two other members that the society has his permission to sell it, and we are certain that he wanted to preserve it.

Both the Anderson-Price Building and the NCC have historical value that merits preservation. The AndersonPrice also has utilitarian value (i.e., many uses and the potential to fund itself through rentals) while the Nathan Cobb has limited utilitarian value because it is too small and it is located in a residential area with limited parking.

The decision regarding the NCC will be made by the entire Board of Directors. We have requested a comprehensive plan from the group that wants the society to keep the NCC, which we have not received to date. We welcome comments from all citizens, and we urge Ms. Wharton and others to join the Historical Society and address their concerns directly to the Board.

As our annual review clearly demonstrates, the society is more active in serving the community than ever.

We take seriously the fact that we have a long-term fiduciary responsibility to maintain the Society on sound financial footing.

HOLLY HILL SCHOOL RECEIVES MINI-GRANT FOR STUDENT GARDEN PROJECT Holly Hill School recently received a grant from the Florida Farm Bureau that will support a new sustainable garden project for students.

The grant has been awarded for the 2020-2021 academic year under the Farm Bureau’s statewide “Ag in the Classroom” program, according to a press release. Three teachers helped the school obtain the funding by submitting an application: STEM teacher Patricia Galbreath, Media Specialist Jennifer Samar and Teacher on Assignment Mallory Cone.

Through the “Sowing Seeds of Hope with Plants: Edible Plants and Herbs” project, students will plant seeds to make connections with the state’s life

Unfortunately, the rollout in the county has been rocky to say the least. My wife and I meet the age requirements, but were not lucky enough to get the shots here locally in Volusia County.

Filling the gap: can med-tech jobs help secure the future of Palm Coast?

Even before a global pandemic, there was an increasing need for health care workers. A 2018 report from global health care staffing consultancy Mercer determined that the U.S. needs to hire 2.3 million new health care workers by 2025 to meet the demand of its aging population.

In Florida — which has the second-highest percentage of residents 65 and older, according to the Population Reference Bureau — the need is felt even stronger. A 2020 study from RegisteredNursing.org found that Florida will have the “highest disparity of nursing supply and demand” by 2030, lacking over 57,000 nurses.

Meeting the need for this shortage at a local level is exactly what Douglas Property & Development aims to do. By creating partnerships with institutions that can educate and prepare students for medical

and technical jobs, Palm Coast can provide the healthcare services its older residents need and keep local graduates from leaving the county to find work.

Palm Coast City Council recently approved investing $2.5 million to add a regional campus of Jacksonville University to Town Center. The University of North Florida Mednexus is also building a satellite presence there to provide a pathway for students seeking jobs in healthcare and medicine.

“These strategic alliances create high-paying jobs that keep families here while meeting the service needs of the existing people,” said Jeff Douglas, president of Douglas Property Development, Inc. “That keeps the community healthy, vibrant, and growing, and takes the pressure off increases in taxes.”

While the exact design of the UNF Mednexus campus is still in the works, one of the campus’ features will be a simulation lab

provided by AdventHealth. The simulation lab will give students the opportunity to practice hands-on scenarios in crisis and high-risk settings. They’ll simulate code situations, respiratory and cardiac emergencies, psychiatric conditions, and other unfamiliar situations.

“Simulations are set up to mimic crisis and high-risk settings, in which students couldn’t normally take part in a clinical area,” said Dr. Cynthia Cummings, UNF School of Nursing Director. “This early preparation will make the nursing students more fully prepared for the critical environment in acute care that they will be entering and allow for a faster and more effective transition into the patient care setting.”

While UNF had originally hoped to start classes in early 2021, enrollment is currently planned for the fall of 2021 or spring of 2022.

JU’s Town Center campus will be the first regional expansion in the university’s 86-year history, and it will eventually become an education corridor offering mental health counseling, nursing, and pathology pro-

grams. The Palm Coast campus is currently pending approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. The first cohort of students is expected to start in the fall of 2021.

Douglas believes that by providing education for the future healthcare workforce in the area, Palm Coast can fill the gap of keeping young talent and meeting the increasing demand of high-quality healthcare. And by doing so, making Palm Coast a healthier community.

“Let’s capitalize on what we are and who we are,” Douglas said. “Obviously, our big age group is a high consumer of medical services. I’m a consumer of the health services here as well, and so is our family.

The nice thing about growth is that it’s bringing a higher class, better class, more efficient class of service. And we want firstclass service for residents for all aspects of their livelihood.”

In addition to the healthcare training and educational institutions, DPD is revitalizing Palm Coast’s Town Center with more housing, food services, office space, and entertainment.

ash on the Boulevard welcomed Granada Plaza shoppers Jan. 17 with the cool retro sounds of local band, The Click. Lyrics to the alternative band 311’s song “Amber” could be heard wafting throughout the parking lot. It was not your typical, quiet shopping center on a Sunday evening.

The inaugural affair started the first of an annual tradition, according to Ormond Beach MainStreet’s executive director, Julia Truilo. This year, the nonprofit organization is celebrating its 25th year of support for the city’s downtown businesses.

While considering options for a much needed event, Truilo decided to act upon her longterm admiration of Winter Park’s Dinner on the Avenue event and host one in Ormond Beach. Bash on the Boulevard became a reality.

Participants purchased tables for their “dining under the stars” experience, followed by a little team building with family and friends to create unique themes for their tables. These included Blue Hawaii, Fire and Ice, Great

Gatsby, Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, New Hires, New Year 2021, Ormond Fishermen, Tailgating, and Winter Wonderland.

“We just wanted to show our support for the city,” stated Fire and Ice’s designer, Georgia McCurdy.

As the beer pong and marshmallow roasting fun began to slow, Truilo thanked the revelers for their contributions, adding, “Ormond Beach MainStreet does great work in Ormond Beach along this corridor. Our district runs from A1A to Orchard, and we support all of those businesses.

The new private beach club for Latitude Margaritaville residents in Ormond-by-the-Sea will open at the end of January, Minto Communities announced on Monday, Jan 18.

The Latitute Margaritaville Beach Club includes a 2,381-square-foot open air pavilion with seating, a tiki bar for special events, as well as restroom and changing facilities, according to a press release. The club also has a pool, tiki cabana and lounging area. Latitude Margaritaville residents will be able to utilize a complimentary shuttle for a round trip to the beach club, and will have access to complimentary cabanas, beach chairs and water toys if reserved in advance.

“With the opening of the Beach Club, along with Latitude Mar-

garitaville’s many other resortstyle amenities, our residents have the ultimate range of world-class amenities available to them,” said William Bullock, president of Minto’s Latitude Margaritavillle division, in the press release. “The Beach Club is a unique amenity and a major addition to the ‘on vacation’ lifestyle found at Latitude Margaritaville Daytona Beach.”

M

a i n l a n d B u cca n e e rs boys basketball team got swarmed by the Leesburg Yellow Jackets in a tight game, losing 66-60 Friday, Jan. 15, at Mainland’s Vince Carter Athletic Center.

Both teams stalled at single digits in the first quarter resulting in a Yellow Jackets 6-2 lead.

They quickened the pace heading into the second quarter breaking for halftime with Leesburg maintaining their lead at 27-19.

Buccaneer Jalen Willis and Yellow Jacket Camerin James each topped the scoreboard for their teams at the half with 11 and 14 points, respectively.

Leesburg’s Justice Robinson gave Mainland two bonus free throws in the third quarter due to a technical foul involving Buccaneer DeAndre Newland, who hobbled off court following the incident. The Buccaneers were able to rally in the third quarter and surpass the Yellow Jackets in fourth quarter points, but even though Willis led Mainland’s charge with 27 points, it was not enough for the win.

Buccaneers are currently 7-7 for the season as they head to Jacksonville Monday, Jan. 18 to play Bishop Snyder.

Lady Bucs trap Palatka Panthers Win boosts Mainland standings to 7-5 before Crescent City game Thursday, Jan. 21.

T

he Lady Buccaneers girls soccer team beat the Palatka Panthers in a 2-0 win Monday, Jan. 18, at Mainland High School.

Missing three starters, two outside backs and their lead scorer, did not stop the Bucs from outmaneuvering the Panthers on the pitch. Less than four minutes into the game, Annabelle Dougherty scored Mainland’s first goal. Goalie Cathiann Goodwin refused all Panther attempts on goal with support from defenders Ava Dougherty and Kassie Stoner.

Utilizing the speed and agility of forward Shelby Lecates, Mainland scored another goal in the second half for the win.

“It was a good effort and aggressive play by everyone.

We were defending well as a whole which limited the other teams chances going forward,” stated Mainland’s coach James Harden.

Lady Buccaneers travel to Crescent City to play the Raiders Thursday, Jan. 21.

Last year, the Root Family Auditorium was full of guests enjoying short films. This year, to adhere to social distancing guidelines, the showing will be split into two seatings.

Is it possible to watch all these genres in one two-hour sitting? It is, if you’re watching short films.

For the third consecutive year, the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach is hosting the Asbury short film concert, an evening that provides local audiences the chance to watch award-winning short films from around the world. The concert, to take place inside the Root Family Auditorium on Saturday, Jan. 30, will have two separate shows, as well as a virtual option for those wanting to view the program from the comfort of their homes.

This year also marks a significant milestone for Asbury: It is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

“We are super excited about that, even as we are still in the midst of a pandemic, the fact that we’ve been able to get this little engine that could last for 40 years blows our minds,” said Doug LeClaire, director for Asbury Shorts USA. As the nation continues to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2020, the concert had to cancel about 18 shows, and there was a time where discussions were had about closing the Asbury short film concert.

venues like MOAS. “Instead of closing the doors, we decided to turn the cheek and become positive that things are going to get better,” LeClaire said.

“We like that feeling much better.”

This “labor of love” began in the early 1980s at a time where not many festivals featured short films, unlike today. The mission LeClaire and his partner, Rick Spencer, set out to fulfill 40 years ago remains unchanged. They want people to see what independent filmmakers are capable of.

“You’re going to see this incredible mix and have fun, and it’s fast-paced, and at the same you may learn something or you may shed a tear — it’s that type of an entertainment event,” LeClaire said. “A little bit of everything hits you in two hours.”

Planning an event during a pandemic is challenging.

MOAS Executive Director Andrew Sandall said they’ve spent the last eight months building the public’s trust in how the museum operates during COVID-19. Planning for a short film concert not only takes time and teamwork, it also takes a bit of luck.

“We’re not just planning an event, and planning the attendance and the logistics —we’re having to second guess a pandemic,” Sandall said.

In previous years, there has only been one showing of the Asbury short film concert. However, to enforce social distancing and the safety of the event’s attendees, MOAS split it into two showings.

“We’re a nice size for something like Asbury,” Sandall said.

“It’s something new that we bring to our visitor base, and our membership base, that they wouldn’t necessarily go watch in a movie theater.”

Since Asbury switches up its lineup of films everywhere it goes, no one at MOAS has seen any of the films. That’s part of the fun of the evening.

“You’re also seeing the best of the best with these films,” said Jenelle Codianne, director of marketing and public relations at MOAS. “Every single one of them is like a showstopper film that’s already won awards.”

SHORT FILMS, BIG PAYOFFS

LeClaire’s goal has always been to bring diversity to each showing.

by French director Frabrice Bracq.

It’s a 20-minute comedy about a case of mistaken identity when a man brings home a woman who is not his wife.

On the other side of the spectrum is “My Uncle Eddie,” a new eight-minute documentary short about filmmaker Todd Edward Kwaitkowski’s uncle, who has lived his whole life with cerebral palsy, and yet became a renowned painter and artist.

“If you like six of the 10, we’ve done our job,” LeClaire said.

The thing about short films, Sandall said, is that the subject matter is concise, and yet the payoffs are always big. It showcases how skilled these filmmakers are in telling a story in the fraction of the time a movie does.

“Sometimes being forced into that format really unleashes their creativity,” Sandall said. “There’s nothing flabby about them, there’s nothing overblown about them, and I think it’s one of those things where it really forces the creators to think about what is important.”
