DBPD reported that 73-yearold John Robert Griffin II, a former elder at Riverbend Community Church in Ormond Beach and former associate professor of air traffic management at EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University, was found to be in possession of 251 child pornography photos. DBPD officers with the agency’s advanced technology and cyber crimes unit were first notified about Griffin having and sharing child pornography through various phone apps in October 2020, according to a press release. Officers executed a search warrant the morning of Jan. 6, finding sexually explicit photos of children on various computers and phones. Some photos depicted children officers estimated were as young as 3 years old. Riverbend’s administration said in an email to the Observer that Griffin was a non-staff, nonvocational elder of the church, but was relieved of all his duties when the church discovered the allegations. DBPD stated it plans to charge Griffin with at least 30 felony counts of child pornography possession. BRIEFS DEC. 13, 2020 NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS 6:54 p.m. — 100 block of Rio Pinar Drive Larceny. An Ormond Beach woman called police after she noticed someone had beheaded her inflatable Santa Claus. Police report the woman went to plug in the Christmas decoration when she noticed its head was missing. She advised police that she had a Ring doorbell, but that it did not capture anything of note. No other decorations were harmed. The woman told police she wished to press charges if a suspect was located. DEC. 27, 2020 LATE NIGHT VISITOR 1:21 a.m. — 100 block of West Granada Boulevard Suspicious incident. A 62-yearold Ormond Beach man was getting ready for bed when he heard someone banging on his front door. As he went to answer it, the man told police it sounded like someone was pulling on the door handle, and he began yelling. Once he opened the door he saw a man running away from his residence and he gave chase. However, he lost him, and returned back home to call 911. While on the phone, he spotted a man who looked very similar to the suspect that was at his door. He asked if he had just tried to break into the house, and the suspect said, “It wasn’t me, I’m sorry.” The man noted the suspect smelled like alcohol and was slurring his words. He also had a cut above his eye and was bleeding, according to the police report. By the time law enforcement arrived, the suspect was gone. The man told police he didn’t want to press charges. DEC. 28, 2020 JOKE’S ON YOU 7:34 a.m. — 200 block of Ponce De Leon Drive Recovered stolen vehicle. Shortly after calling police to report his vehicle as stolen, a 52-year-old man reached out again and said his car had been returned by a “buddy.” Police report that the man said a friend had taken his car to play a joke on him after becoming upset when the man went to a woman’s house after a gathering. His friend thought it would be funny, according to the police report. He did not tell police his friend’s name and declined to pursue charges. COPS CORNER
