What makes a community great?

Here at the Ormond Beach Observer, we try to be your eyes and ears for every important moment — every commission decision, every communitywide event, every story at the center of our town. Inevitably, a lot of the same names reappear in our pages on a weekly basis. We report on the “newsmakers,” the elected officials, business leaders and community philanthropists.

But there are those whose names don’t often make it in print. They work behind the scenes, making sure different aspects of our city run like clockwork. This week, we shine a spotlight on those individuals to celebrate them for their impact on the community.

They’re our Standing O’s, nominated in most cases by last year’s nominees.

This year, all of our Standing O’s are women — strong women who are part of the backbone of Ormond Beach in their fields, which include service, public safety, health, history and the arts. Their stories, a little insight into their giving souls, are included in the pages of this edition.

So are the stories of our local Teachers of the Year — men and women who educate the next generation and impart words of wisdom.

In this edition, let’s remember what’s at the core of our community: people.

And whether she is keeping track of construction debris contracts, working with other division managers or answering questions for residents before and after a hurricane, she sees that all her “small tasks” make a difference.

“I found that I was good at what

Her husband has been on the mend from a surgery for the last couple of weeks, and she’s been realizing how important it is to live “every day as if it is your last.”

“You have to live in the moment,” Roeper said. “You have to enjoy every day and be thankful for every day.”

Kyra Altes didn’t know she would become a therapist when she decided to be a fitness instructor, she says with a laugh. She offers Pilates, aerial yoga and barre, and she finds herself getting to know her clients and helping them keep a positive, upbeat attitude as she helps them achieve their wellness goals.

“You become a friend,” she said.

Bridget Bergens, of Ormond Beach, called Altes an amazing person.

“She truly cares and helps her clients improve their quality of life from the inside out,” she said.

Altes is renovating a space in the Trails Shopping Plaza for her business, Fluid Fitness, at 268 N. Nova Road.

Previously, she was at Anytime Fitness and now works with clients one-on-one until her new place becomes ready, hopefully by the end of January.

Altes first became a Pilates instructor and later learned aerial yoga and barre to help clients improve strength, balance, flexibility and range of motion so that they could lead a fuller and happier life.

“I want to not just give a workout, but help them do the things

they want to do, such as pick up their grandchildren without their back hurting or walking without knee pain,” she said.

Her biggest joy, she said, is when a client overcomes a limitation and can return to doing something they used to do.

She also wants to know how a person is feeling mentally. For example, if a person is stressed, some deep breathing or fluid movement might help them relax.

The inner self is important. If a client is saying negative things about themselves, she reminds them what they have accomplished. It’s also helpful for a client to have a quiet time, even if it’s just five minutes to think about how they feel. When a person feels better physically, they also are more apt to socialize, which helps the mental state.

She’s had some clients for sev-

eral years.

“They are like family to me,” she said. “It’s been really sweet.”

She also likes her clients to know each other to build a community.

One of her favorite quotes is by the inventor of Pilates, who said, “change happens through movement and movement heals.”

One of her Pilates students, Bill Voges, of Ormond Beach, had spinal surgery, and the doctor told him Pilates would be a good exercise for rehabilitation, but to get a one-on-one coach because he needed personal attention.

“I was blessed to find Kyra,” he said. “She helped me gain flexibility. She’s very encouraging. A very positive person.”

One conversation with Joyce Pepin is all it takes for her passion for public service to shine through.

She and her husband, Mike, have lived in Ormond Beach for the last 40 years, and getting involved in the community has become second nature. Both members of different local Rotary clubs, they incorporate philanthropy into their real estate company as well; each closing, Pepin

donates a portion of the proceeds to the charity of her customer’s choice.

“We really believe in giving back — not only our time and talent, but a treasure to the community,” Pepin said.

In 2016, Joyce Pepin started the Rotary Club of Downtown Ormond Beach, serving as its president for the following two years. She had been a Rotarian for a long time. Back then, she was a member of the Daytona Beach West Rotary Club. While on a cruise, she casually made a comment about the need for another Rotary Club in Ormond Beach.

Three months later, the Rotary district governor-elect took her up on that.

on May 1, 2017, and has tackled a variety of service projects locally, including helping clean up Granada Boulevard; painting classrooms at the Pace Center for Girls; hosting fundraisers for local causes; and aiding Ormond Beach Elementary in many different ways — building an outdoor classroom, tending to the school gardens and conducting a Reading Buddies program to help third and fourth graders with literacy.

That latter effort has resulted in a drastic improvement on the students’ reading scores.

Pepin said seeing the progress in the students was “icing on the cake.” The Rotary Club is also starting a project with the city early next year to bring multigenerational ADA-compliant fitness circuits to all four parks at the base of the Granada Bridge. “[Rotary’s] motto is service above self,” Pepin said. “I mean, that’s really what it’s about.”

She and her husband, who are both graduates from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, also serve as the Daytona Beach area Alumni Network leaders, helping to plan social events and encourage donations. They also help freshmen move in every year.

Pepin also belongs to a local Tri Delta alumnae organization that performs philanthropy for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and she helps out the St. Brendan Catholic Church whenever she can.

It’s her abundance of energy that drives her love of service, she said, even though she’s trying to learn to dial it back.

ting involved,” Pepin said.

She hopes her enthusiasm is contagious. If she talks to someone about Rotary, she estimates a 90% chance they’ll want to become members. When she’s out showing customers homes, she tries to wear her Rotary pin.

Over the years, she’s sponsored more than 20 people into the club.

A philosophy she lives by is: If you’re going to do something, do it really well — be that volunteering or something else entirely.

“Whatever you do, do it all in,” Pepin said.

Bonda Garrison loves a good story.

Reading the tales of real people, seeing the similarities and differences in the way they lived compared to the lives of people today — it’s like reading a novel, she said.

The outgoing Ormond Beach Historical Society president has spent almost 20 years learning the town’s stories. She joined the society’s Board of Directors in 2004 and has been working alongside the rest of the board to preserve these stories for a new generation.

“People always talk about Ormond Beach as having character and having a sense of place, a sense of belonging, and I really believe that has a lot to do with the history that’s here,” Garrison said.

When she moved here in 2001 after she and her husband retired, Garrison saw an article in the newspaper about the His-

torical Society hosting a lecture about the city’s history. Garrison had been a history major in college, and thought it would be a great way to get to know Ormond Beach, so she attended.

There, she met Don Bostrom and Alice Strickland. Bostrom’s grandfather, John Andrew Bostrom, was the first to settle on the beachside, and Strickland is still considered today to be one of the town’s historians. Both have since died, but meeting them and cultivating a friendship led Garrison to get involved.

Since then, she’s gotten to know many in the community, seeing their contributions and how Ormond Beach works as a community.

“Almost everything that happens, happens because of volunteers — especially in a small

town,” Garrison said.

The Historical Society has been battling to preserve the MacDonald House for years. Now, things seem to be moving in the right direction.

The society is partnering with the city, which owns the house, to apply for an ECHO grant to restore the exterior. So far, the society has contributed $100,000. With help from the grant, Garrison said, they’ll be able to do the repairs.

Then, it’s on to restoring the inside of the home with the hope of turning it into a welcome center and museum of Ormond Beach history. It’s not just a cultural decision: It’s a business move, Garrison said, adding that studies from around the state show that people who travel to a city for cultural reasons tend to spend more money and stay longer than those who simply come for the beaches.

“Bonda has been a leading person in promoting the History Happenings public educational programs via the Historical Society as well as serving in a leading role in the effort to save the Stout-MacDonald House and convert that historic structure on East Granada Boulevard into our city’s historical museum,” said Philip Shapiro, past president of the Historical Society.

Ormond’s history is very diverse, Garrison said. It was at the forefront of early settlements in Florida, has Native American history due to the Timucua Indians, and of course, it’s the birthplace of speed.

Making a museum row with The Casements and the Ormond Memorial Art Museum is the end goal. Garrison said she is just one of many working toward it.

She joked that there are only two things she won’t do for the Historical Society: She won’t be the treasurer, and she doesn’t want to weed the Three Chimneys site.

Her life philosophy?

“What would Jesus do?” Garrison said. And: How can she make a positive impact on other people, show them love and kindness, and do that in her community? Also, she said, “how do you handle Plan B?” “Because invariably, things in life don’t go exactly the way you plan it, and how you handle what happens instead is what’s important,” Garrison said.

She’s like the Energizer bunny.

That’s how Gloria Max, executive director of the Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler Counties, describes volunteer Marta Weisberg.

As social services chairwoman, Weisberg’s main responsibility is to maintain the food inventory for the Jerry Doliner Food Bank, which distributes food to those in need.

Eleven years ago, she started volunteering for the organization, and noticed what it was paying for food items.

“Let me go out and price shop,” she told Max back then. “I can get things at a better price.”

She now scours the ads and deals with store managers to get the most for the money available, which all comes from donations.

Shopping economically is something Weisberg, 82, learned

long ago. Her husband, a dentist, had to retire early because he lost vision in one eye. Taking care of four children, Weisberg had to get the most from their grocery dollars.

She also had to figure out a way to bring in money for the family, so she started a pastry business in 1980, baking for a local caterer and a restaurant near their Ohio home. Her specialties were cheese cake and black bottom cake. The couple moved to Florida in 1986.

Now, Weisberg’s baking experience helps in her volunteer work. She makes as many as 400 cookies for the annual community-wide Shabbat.

“Her cookies are yummy, they really are,” Max said.

She bakes throughout the year, arranging birthday parties for Max; her husband, Ray; and their assistant. As many as 45 people attend the parties.

“She’s just a really good person,” Max said. “We couldn’t do without her. She’s always there for us.”

Weisberg said she believes strongly in the work of the federation, and that God meant for her to be here. She had a stroke

at age 59 and a heart attack at 68.

“God allows me to live for a reason. I hope to keep working,” she said. “I feel fortunate that I’m still functioning.”

Max said the organization could not operate without the contri-

butions of the volunteers, which currently number about 45. They are of all races and religions.

There’s a lot of camaraderie, Max said, and they get along like family.

Those are five words Crime Scene Technician Victoria Lancaster lives by. She says them to

the Ormond Beach police officers all the time, often referring to the work the department puts in to solve crimes and keep the city safe. But she also applies it to her daily life.

“You got one life to live, so live it to your fullest,” Lancaster said.

evidence started in Marion County 10 years ago. Solving cases is a team effort, she said, but her role can “make or break” a case. It’s up to her to collect all items that could be valuable evidence, and either process them at the scene or bring them back and examine them in the lab.

It’s a hefty responsibility, as that evidence can later be presented in a courtroom to determine someone’s innocence or

guilt. With each new case, Lancaster tries to learn something new and improve.

She didn’t always want to work in this field. Lancaster — who is originally from Scranton, Pennsylvania — actually wanted to be a pediatrician at first.

Life led her to discover her love of working in criminal justice, though she didn’t end up in her dream job right away. She started as a corrections assistant at the

Marion County Jail and was later moved to classifications, where she did a lot of paperwork.

Then, when a position in crime scene investigations opened, she applied.

Over the years, it’s the cases with children that stick in her mind. A particularly hard one happened in Marion County — five children died in a fire. That was her first case involving a child death investigation. One of the children was her daughter’s age at the time.

“It’s just one of those things where you learn to disassociate yourself from things,” Lancaster said.

Lancaster thinks of the victims all the time. OBPD’s active outreach programs also help keep her positive. She loves that the department hosts programs like Science on Patrol, the Five-0 club and Coffee with a Cop. Lancaster is also an advisor with the Explorer’s program.

Each Monday night, she spends three hours with the Explorers.

“Whether it’s teaching them about crime scenes or just helping,” Lancaster said, “it’s good for me because I learn more about the police end of it that I didn’t know.”

Business owner helps boost the downtown.

Julia Truilo, executive director of Ormond MainStreet, said she can go to Victoria Jones with a wacky request, and Jones always responds with enthusiasm. Like the time Truilo asked her to provide an art spinner for Granada Grand Festival of the Arts.

“She and her staff made one from an old bicycle pedal,” Truilo said, smiling at the memory.

Truilo also recounts Jones making art décor for events at Ormond Memorial Art Museum and Gardens.

Jones, who owns Frame of Mind Custom Framing and Art Gallery, at 23 W. Granada Blvd., has a passion for making the downtown an arts district and a vibrant business community.

“She has been very active in helping build the downtown merchants organization and has helped create events that bring people to historic Ormond Beach,” Truilo said.

It was Jones and a couple of other gallery owners who started the Art Walk, now happening the first Saturday of each month.

Jones said that she now believes Ormond has an arts district.

“It’s been a long journey,” she

said.

Jones said there are more creative people in the area than some might think: She pointed out how fast Arts on Granada filled up with local artists when it opened.

Having an arts district means artists have an outlet for expression, and residents don’t have to drive out of town to experience art and music.

“You can tell by attendance at art and music festivals that there is an interest,” she said.

Being a business owner, Jones is also active in boosting MainStreet. She organized Small Business Saturday with 50 businesses exhibiting their wares outside Frame of Mind.

Her energy is also evident in her own business. The biggest part is framing, and she is expanding into helping customers arrange art and lighting in their homes.

Her current project is a room in Frame of Mind called “The Space,” for pop-up meetings. Noting that many people conduct business in the Gold Leaf Coffee Co., located in Frame of Mind, The Space provides a meeting room.

“It’s part of an outreach to the community,” she said.

Jones studied art and photography at Daytona State College.

While there, she worked in a framing shop. Now her art, photography and framing skills are coming together at Frame of Mind and to the benefit of the community.

Jordan Sears aims for success in last high school season Sears, a Gardner-Webb commit, wants a state title in his final year of high school.

After every grueling practice, Buccaneers point guard Jordan Sears grabs a spare ball and walks to the top of the 3-point line at Mainland High School’s basketball gym. He shoots until he makes it, until he sees the ball rip through the net.

Only then is he satisfied.

The memory of one particular miss haunts him. It’s what drives him to shoot this shot every single day.

By now, it’s been well reiterated.

In the Buccaneers’ Class 7A regional semifinal game against Auburndale on Feb. 26, Mainland was down 49-47. Sears, with the seconds ticking off the clock, dribbled the ball up the court and pulled up from the top of the 3-point line. His shot rimmed out as the buzzer sounded, and the Buccaneers were eliminated from the 2019 state playoffs despite a 27-2 overall record.

“I think about that shot every day,” Sears said. “I know when that time comes again, I’m going to be ready.”

Last season was Sears’ first at Mainland. He’d been with his previous high school head coach since he was a little kid. A former transfer from rival Atlantic High School in Port Orange, Sears fell in love with his new school, his new coaches and his new teammates.

“We’re so connected,” he said.

“Everyone treats each other like family. We love one another so much.”

Sears was the Buccaneers’ leading scorer. Only now, however, in his senior season, is he the clear leader of the team, which has its sights set on going deeper into the playoffs in head coach Joe Giddens’ third season at the helm.

Sears — a dynamic scorer, willing passer and aggressive defender — will play an important, if not the most important, role in achieving that goal.

Last season’s playoff loss, his first taste of the playoffs since his freshman year at Atlantic, made a little clearer what he has to do to be successful.

“I know what to do now,” he said. “I know how to lead my team a little bit better. Next time we’re there, we’ll be more prepared.”

Sears, who has played the game since he was 3, has always played with a chip on his shoulder. He has giant aspirations for his basketball career. The first step was earning a scholarship from a university.

wasn’t going to receive any offers. However, he picked up his first offer this past summer from hometown team Bethune-Cookman.

But he was also extended an offer from Division I program Gardner-Webb. He vis-

ited the school’s campus in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, in August and felt a familiar feeling.

“It felt like it does here at Mainland,” he said. “It felt like home.”

He’s been committed to the school for the past few months now, but he still won’t settle.

The fire to succeed and push this team deep into the playoffs is still burning.

“You have to play like you want it more than anybody else,” Sears said. “Even now that I’m committed to a school, I still have that chip on my shoulder.”

Being nominated for Teacher of the Year was “everything [she] thought it would be,” Johns said, and she feels honored to receive the recognition from her school’s staff.

“To be recognized by your peers is an accomplishment that I will always treasure,” Johns said.

Her favorite thing about teaching is making music with her students.

“Everything is new to them and challenging and fun,” she said. “To see the looks on their faces when we create something in class is just priceless.”

If she could share one piece of wisdom, it’s that she hopes her students always believe in themselves, even if others don’t.

“You never know what you might accomplish simply by trying,” Johns said.

Ida Sierra Bonilla didn’t choose teaching. It chose her.

But it didn’t happen right away.

The Hinson Middle School math teacher first went to college for business. She worked long hours in the groups and conventions department of a big hotel — which was great, she recalls. Until she became a mom.

Wanting to be more involved in her sons’ lives, she left the hotel industry and evaluated other career options. In the meantime, she volunteered with her oldest son’s school PTA, chaperoned field trips, helped with fall festivals and even became the football team mom. After she became a substitute teacher, she decided to pursue teaching, a career she had been familiar with since she was young. Her mom was a teacher, and because of that, Bonilla said, she grew up in a classroom.

“Teaching fit me like a glove,” Bonilla said.

It’s an amazing feeling to be recognized by peers, she said of the Teacher of the Year nomination. But it is also humbling and brings with it an added sense of responsibilit — especially, Bonilla said, with new teachers coming

Amy Airgood was in ninth grade when she decided teaching would be her path in life.

She’d had the chance to go back to her elementary school and get a firsthand experience of what a career in education would be like, by planning and teaching a science lesson to a group of second and third grade students.

Now, Airgood is in her 34th year of teaching.

“I enjoyed seeing the student engagement and excitement,” Airgood said. “I felt I was making a difference in the education of those students and decided that I wanted to continue this for the rest of my life.”

Airgood teaches fifth grade math and science in Ormond Beach Elementary, and this is her seventh year as an educator in Volusia County. Airgood said she was honored to represent her school as its Teacher of the Year and humbled that her colleagues believe in and support what she does for students.

“Teachers are so important to our children, our overall society,” Bonilla said. “There are so many dedicated, responsible, inspiring educators that it’s hard to think that one can be recognized over others. I push to be better in my craft because of all of these teachers. My hat goes off to them.”

Her favorite thing about her job is the ability to impact students, to encourage them to strive for academic and civil excellence.

It’s the relationships she’s able to build with students and peers that inspire her.

If she could share one piece of wisdom, it would be to enjoy every learning process in life and be open to new ideas.

“I believe that education, formal or informal, is the opportunity for every student to reach their full potential as human beings,” she said.

In middle school, Kellee DeRiggi knows, two days are never the same.

DeRiggi began her education career 20 years ago in a middle school setting, and as Ormond Beach Middle School’s Teacher of the Year, the eighth grade guidance counselor said, she strives to do her best every day to help students with academic achievement, career planning, and social and emotional development.

After all, seeing a counselor interact with students is what inspired her to make the switch from teaching.

Cam Blass, who was an eighth grade counselor at the time at OBMS, had asked DeRiggi for permission to use her classroom for her Girl’s Circle group.

“I was completely awed,” DeRiggi said. “She had such a rapport and trust with her students.

She had built an understanding and compassionate group out of girls who normally would not ‘fit together.’”

So, DeRiggi went back to school and earned her master’s degree.

She’s wanted to teach for as long as she can remember. As a child, she loved sitting at her

That’s something Leah Graf tells her students every day. She wants them to believe in themselves.

“You might not always succeed but you have to give it your all and try,” Graf said.

Graf was nominated as Pathways Elementary School’s Teacher of the Year, and when she first heard the news, she was in shock.

Once that passed, Graf— who is in her 24th year of teaching — said she felt very humbled, as she’s had “the privilege of teaching alongside some of the best teachers in Volusia County.”

The Texas native started out teaching fourth grade, followed by first and second grade. She’s currently back to teaching first grade. Graf finished her college career at Daytona Beach Community College, now Daytona State University, and the University of Central Florida, where she graduated with her master’s degree in Reading K-12.

She grew up wanting to be a teacher. Just like her own teachers impacted her, Graf said, she wanted to do the same for her students.

There are a lot of things she loves about her job.

“I have learned more from my students than I have taught them,” DeRiggi said. “I love their view of life. I love that for 7.5 hours a day, they are loved, cared for and safe.”

She appreciates her fellow educators and said she loves that they “never give up on the kids.” She loves accepting and giving hugs, and providing students with second chances.

DeRiggi takes her position as a role model seriously; she wants her students to never give up and to visit her any time.

“I love being that person when there is no place to go,” DeRiggi said. “Being an educator is a profoundly challenging and rewarding job, and I simply cannot imagine doing anything else.”

Graf has taught at two schools: South Daytona Elementary and Pathways.

She said her favorite thing about teaching is watching her students grow. Many things are out of her control when her students are not with her, she said, but when they’re in her classroom, she can teach, love, guide and listen to them.

“The students who feel safe, in all ways, make such growth,” Graf said. “I love seeing this happen.”

Graf has been married to her husband Brian for 21 years, and they have three children: twin daughters currently attending the University of South Florida and a 16-year-old son who attends Mainland High School.

Teaching wasn’t a profession that had crossed Stefanie Larkin’s mind when she graduated from Mainland High School in 1993.

In fact, she went to college for a different major. It wasn’t until after she graduated that Larkin realized she wanted to go in another direction. That path led her to a paraprofessional job at Ormond Beach Middle School, but she didn’t intend it to be permanent: It was just a job to tide her over until she decided what she wanted to do.

That was 22 years ago. The teacher she worked with had a lot of faith in her, entrusting her to help special education students improve their reading skills.

“I treasured the relationships that I built with them and the rapport that was established,” Larkin said. “I continued soaking in knowledge and continued working with students as I was attending college once again. I haven’t looked back ever since.”

Now, she’s been a classroom teacher for 18 years. Larkin, who is Pine Trail Elementary’s Teacher of the Year, currently teaches fourth grade. Her favorite core subject to teach is math.

Ray Grimard loves seeing his past students come back to speak to his class in uniform. Having served in the U.S. Navy, he said, he’s a strong advocate for students joining the armed forces after graduation.

“As a veteran, it is a very proud moment,” Grimard said.

He’s been teaching for 26 years now, though looking back to his own high school years in New Hampshire, Grimard said, it hadn’t been a career option he considered at the time. He didn’t like school, he said, and he wasn’t the best student.

“Truth be told, I wanted to be an attorney, but after volunteering in the law library in the New Hampshire prison system and seeing the result of young men who grew into their 20s (many doing long stretches of time) I thought that maybe working in the ‘preventative’ side instead of being an advocate on the ‘corrective’ side of the equation might be a better path,” Grimard said.

“Plus, teachers had summers off.

So teaching became the path.”

“I treasure when students come back to see me when they are seniors or have graduated college,” Larkin said. “I’ve gotten emails from former students letting me know that they will always remember me or that they chose to become a teacher because of me.”

If she could share one piece of wisdom with her students, it would be to always remain teachable, no matter how much you think you know. Larkin quoted Ralph Waldo Emerson, who said: “A great man is always willing to be little.”

He said he’s humbled and honored to be recognized as Seabreeze’s Teacher of the Year, but that the recognition makes him uncomfortable. He’s never been one for the spotlight.

If he could share one piece of wisdom with students, it would be to learn everything you can.

“Learn the basics,” Grimard said. “Memorize mathematic timetables and units of measurement, read as much as you can, work with your hands as well as with your head, know history, understand how the government works ... ” Also, put your phones away.

“The mind is powerful,” Stephenson said. “Therefore, when someone believes in you and gives you the confidence that you can accomplish what others say is impossible, your mind can overcome obstacles and accomplish ‘impossible’ tasks.”

At times, she continued, test scores or state mandates can be discouraging. However, that’s when perseverance becomes important.

“Endurance and grit to work through challenging tasks will get you where you want to be,” she said.

Stephenson, a Spruce Creek High School alumna, graduated from the University of Central Florida with a bachelor’s in elementary education, and later with a master’s in educational leadership from Grand Canyon University in Arizona.

The Tomoka Elementary Teacher of the Year is currently an academic coach. She has been teaching in Volusia County for

eight years, six of which she spent as a classroom teacher. This is her second year at Tomoka.

Her path to becoming a teacher started with her mom, who taught for 27 years. They used to play “school” together. Later, as a high schooler, Stephenson joined a program called “Wee Hawks” that allowed students to teach early childhood education.

That, she said, solidified her interest in teaching.

“Ever since I was a child, I knew I wanted to be involved in work that makes a difference and impacts the world in a positive way,” Stephenson said. “I feel that teaching is the best profession for that.”

She said she feels honored to be named Tomoka’s Teacher of the Year, and that she works with “incredible people every day who inspire me to be better.”

Her favorite thing about being a teacher is the meaningful relationships she builds with students, their families and fellow educators.

“It is neat to see the gratification that comes when you have spent an abundant amount of time planning a lesson and the kids are fully engaged and excited about the content,” Stephenson said. “Watching them grow throughout the school year and beyond is inspiring and satisfying.”

Her favorite thing about teaching is meeting new students and watching them grow. She also loves having fun inside jokes.

If she could share one piece of wisdom, it would be to never stop trying to be the best student and person you can be.

“Being an overachiever is a good thing,” Walker said. “One of my favorite teachers, and coach, says it perfectly when he addresses his football team: ‘If you want to end up different than others later, you must do things different than those now.’”
