Temple Beth Shalom (40 Wellington Drive, Palm Coast) hosts a Menorah Lighting Service on Sunday, Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. Rabbi Rose Eberle invintes attendees to bring their own Menorahs to light the first night candle together as a temple family. The temple choir will sing, with refreshments will follow. To protect members, proof of vaccination is required. Masks are

optional for the vaccinated. On Monday, Nov. 29, at 5 p.m., Rabbi Levi Ezaqui, of Chabad of Palm Coast, will welcome crowds to European Village for a Grand Menorah Lighting on a specially built 8-foot high Menorah. Mayor David Alfin and Sheriff Rick Staly have accepted an invitation to attend.

At the kickoff to the drive-thru on Nov. 19, at Daytona International Speedway, Speedway President Frank Kelleher presented the AdventHealth Daytona Beach Foundation a ceremonial check for $29,776, as a result of the success of the traditional event a year ago. Back for its fifth year at the World Center of Racing, Magic of Lights will provide six weeks of magical spectacles, dazzling displays, and more than 1 million twinkling, sparkling lights. Flagler Beach will hold a First Friday event at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 3 in Veterans Park, with the city’s Starry Night lights show following at 6 p.m. with the lighting of the Flagler Beach pier, Mayor Suzie Johnston said on the radio program. This year, the city is adding a new feature: “Deck the Chairs,” which adorns the city’s life guard towers.

Flagler Beach will hold its annual “Holiday at the Beach” parade on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 1 p.m. The holiday parade in 2020 was canceled due to COVID-19, and this year’s parade will be slightly shorter in length than previous parades, as a precaution for the delta variant. Flagler Beach Mayor Suzie Johnston stated: “This year will be magical in Flagler Beach, as we have all been

waiting to return to normalcy. I am very excited for the Holiday at the Beach Parade, and I know the residents and visitors are too. Celebrating Hanukkah in Palm Coast MARYLYNNE NEWMARK GUEST WRITER

Unlike Holy Days such as Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur that are fervently observed by Jews around the world, Hanukkah is a festive funpacked holiday. Hanukkah, which means “Dedication,” commemorates a jubilant victory in 164 B.C. when the Maccabees, a small band of Jewish warriors, defeated the great Syrian army that had invaded Judea and destroyed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. In the cleanup process after the Syrians left, it was discovered that the highly refined oil needed to keep the Eternal Light glowing near the Holy Ark had been defiled and poured out. It would take eight days to purify a new supply. Matisyahu, the high priest, noticed a minute amount of oil remaining in the meniscus of one jar. He instructed that even this small amount of oil should be lit by the ark for as long as it would last. The significance of the victory became even more joyous as those few drops of oil kept the Eternal Light burning for the full eight days that were needed to complete the purification process. So, the story of these miracles of Hanukkah were passed down thousands of years from generation to generation signifying that The Holy One, Blessed Be He, was with the people, reminding us that great miracles happened there and still can happen everywhere. This year, beginning Sunday, Nov. 28, celebrations will commence around the world with Jewish families lighting the first of their eight candles, eating yummy oily foods like potato pancakes (latkes) and jelly doughnuts (sufganiyot) along with brisket or chicken dishes. Although it is traditional to give charity and gifts of holiday money (Hanukkah gelt), kids today receive toys, books, dreidels and other joyful playthings. Communitywide celebrations begin here in Palm Coast with a

Hanukkah-in-a-Box pickup at Temple Beth Shalom on Sunday and Monday, Nov. 28 and 29. The box includes latkes prepared by Rabbi Rose Eberle, her family and temple members along with sour cream and appllesauce, as well as doughnuts, chocolate Hanukkah gelt and some other surprises. However, Hanukkah-in-a-Box must be pre-ordered at the Temple Beth Shalom office (386-445-3006) with a donation payable to the temple for $18 per box by Friday, Nov. 20. Also at Temple Beth Shalom on Sunday evening, Nov. 28 at 7 p.m., Rose will host a communitywide Menorah Lighting Service during which attendees are invited to bring their own Menorahs to light the first night candle together as a temple family. The temple choir will sing Hanukkah songs that are traditional, as well as humorous upbeat songs introduced in recent years by comtemporary Jewish vocalists. Attendees will be encouraged to join in. Refreshments will follow. To protect members, proof of vaccination is

required. Masks are optional for the vaccinated. On Monday, Nov. 29, at 5 p.m., Rabbi Levi Ezaqui, of Chabad of Palm Coast, will welcome crowds to European Village for a Grand Menorah Lighting on a specially built 8-foot high Menorah. Mayor David Alfin and Sheriff Rick Staly have accepted an invitation to attend. “This is a special outdoor celebration for everyone to enjoy,” says Ezaqui. “There will be fun for all. We will have live entertainment with music and a spectacular comedy magic show on center stage. Kids can enjoy riding around the village on our mini-train. There will be face painting, balloon twisting, as well as visiting with the small animals from alocal petting zoo.” In addition, Ezaqui says that Starbucks will be on the premises to warm the soul while attendees enjoy free latkes and doughnuts supplied by event sponsors Palm Coast Pharmacy and Virtual Homes Realty. “We welcome the entire Palm Coast community to share in the fun

of this fabulous holiday,” says Ezaqui. “Our event is open to everyone. Celebrations do not stop there. On Wednesday night, Dec. 1, Rebbitzen Tzivie Ezaqui will host a Ladies Hanukkah Party for Fourth Night Fun as Barbra Gary, local certified ZenTangle instructor will awaken artistic skills while leading attendees through a process of ZenTangle artistry to create unique Hanukkah Menorahs. Continuing in the holiday spirit, the Men’s Club of Temple Beth Shalom is sponsoring a Hanukkah Shmoozer for members on Thursday, Dec. 2 at 10 a.m. At this event, bagels, cream cheese and lox will be served along with (you guessed it) jelly doughnuts. “As much fun as we have during Hanukkah,” says Robert Arkin, president of Temple Beth Shalom, “there is a deeper message behind this holiday. The Maccabees were a handful of men, but they were determined and had faith they could succeed. With only a few drops of oil, the high priest said that whatever we had would be a dedication of renewal until we could produce what we could. “They had determination, faith and trust in The Almighty. As a result, miracles happened. Looking back at history,” continued Arkin, “perhaps determination, faith and trust is a formula that could apply to solving some of the fractured issues confronting us today. Who knows? It might bring on some prime time miracles.”

PALM HOLIDAY BOAT PARADE SATURDAY, DEC. 18, 6 P.M.

Palm Coast’s Priscilla Nets will join Linda Cole, “The Queen of Jazz,” and Flagler Broadcasting General Manager David Ayers for live coverage of the 38th-annual Palm Holiday Boat Parade, considered the largest boat parade in Central Florida. Coverage on KOOL-FM, 100.9, begins at 6 p.m. Dec. 18. Marked by festive parties and gatherings all along the Parade route, the parade will be accompanied by boats from the Flagler Sheriff’s Office, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Service, and TowBoatUS. Grand Marshalls will be Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly and David Alfin, Mayor of Palm Coast. Departing from the Cimmaron Basin, the parade will pass the Tidelands, Marina Cove, the Hammock, Yacht Harbor Village, and the Palm Coast Legacy Vacation Resort. It will then proceed under the Hammock Dunes Bridge along St. Joe’s Walkway and Canopy Walk, pass by Island Estates, Waterfront Park, and Grand Haven before dispersing at the Clubhouse Waterway. This year spectators will not have access to parking at Waterfront Park due to a city construction project to enhance water-based activities. Parking is available near European Village for viewing along St. Joe’s Walkway, Canopy Walk, and at Waterfront Park. Promotional assistance for the parade has been provided by the Florida Inland Navigational District, Flagler Broadcasting, and the Palm Coast Observer.
