I

t’s been an incredible year for Palm Beach Symphony. We were elated to welcome world-class soloists sponsored by our Impresario Society.

Our renowned Music Director Gerard Schwarz also continues to achieve new heights of artistic excellence with the Symphony, as is evident by the fantastic concerts from this past season.

Our subscriptions and memberships grew by 21% from the previous year. Over 450 guests enjoyed our 21st Annual Gala: A Standing Ovation, surpassing attendance of all previous Galas. Not only that, but our 6th Annual Holly Jolly Symphony Fête luncheon saw 370 guests in attendance, and our Swings for Strings Golf Invitational sold-out.

Thanks to people like you, Palm Beach Symphony can continue to perform inspiring Masterworks concerts with the finest orchestral musicians in South Florida and deliver excellent community outreach programs for Palm Beach County. Families throughout South Florida enjoyed the third televised Sounds of the Season broadcast as we expanded our partnership with CBS12.

In the fall of 2022, the Symphony performed Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf as part of the Dale A. McNulty Children’s Concert Series to thousands of students in Palm Beach County. It was narrated by twotime Grammy-Award winner Jon Secada.

As board chairman, James Borynack took the helm this season with clarity, dedication, and excellent board governance. The combined efforts of the growing board, staff, and volunteers will forge forward grand plans for a phenomenal celebratory 50th anniversary in the 202324 season.

OVERVIEW Palm Beach Symphony, founded in 1974 as the first professional orchestra in Palm Beach County, only performing a few concerts each season with a part-time conductor and volunteer staff, has seen remarkable development, including new milestones in community outreach, music education, programming, and fundraising.

In its 49th season, the Symphony continues its strong momentum of growth under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer David McClymont. Music Director Gerard Schwarz is leading spirited performances of Masterworks concerts with an orchestra that reaches 90 players, the mark of a major symphony orchestra. Recognized by The Cultural Council for Palm Beach County with a 2020 Muse Award for Outstanding Community Engagement, Palm Beach Symphony also continues to expand its education and community outreach programs.

Children’s concerts, student coaching sessions and masterclasses, instrument donations, and free public concerts have reached more than 72,000 students in recent years.

Palm Beach Symphony attracted more members, subscribers, and single ticket buyers to its blockbuster season of world-class concerts with renowned artists. Performances at the Kravis Center were crowd pleasers, with thousands attending in-person at Dreyfoos Hall. Our partnership with CBS 12 of Sinclair Broadcast Group continued hosting the Sounds of the Season holiday concert broadcast, which reached nearly 100,000 people.

We recently introduced a new membership group called the Impresario Society that plays a leading role in the Symphony’s efforts to deliver spirited Masterworks concerts with world-class guest artists.

Through these patrons’ combined support, the Masterworks Season provided inspiring classical music performances by virtuoso soloists with first-rate orchestral musicians conducted under Maestro Gerard Schwarz’s baton.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit cultural arts organization, we are committed to enhancing the communities in which we perform. Palm Beach Symphony dedicates its efforts to expand its reach, bringing classical music to people of all ages, backgrounds, and life experiences.

ur community outreach events serve as the cornerstone of our efforts to reach Palm Beach County’s broad and diverse community.

At Palm Beach Symphony, we believe in the power of music to create meaningful connections.

That’s why we offer a variety of community outreach programs that allow us to engage with members of the community beyond our concert venue. From mini-concerts throughout Palm Beach County to memorable experiences in hospitals and awarding scholarship prizes to artists, we utilize the power of music to impact the lives of those we serve positively. As the season advanced, the Symphony engaged in many opportunities in collaboration with valued community partners – the Related Group, Cultural Council for Palm Beach County, Downtown Development Authority, West Palm Beach Arts and Entertainment District, Norton Museum of Art, Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach, Braman Motors, Lugano Diamonds, and Hospital for Special Surgery, just to name a few - allowing us to offer these excellent programs that vastly enrich our community.

EDUCATE The Paul and Sandra Goldner Conservatory of Music

alm Beach Symphony creates impact through The Paul and Sandra Goldner Conservatory of Music. It provides music education initiatives that are constantly evolving to deepen and extend student learning opportunities. The program has positively affected more than 60,000 students in Palm Beach County in recent years.

Partially funded by a matching grant along with corporate sponsors and individual gifts, the Symphony offers vital music education programming which includes its Dale A. McNulty Children’s Concert Series, artist-in-residence programs, teacher resources, donated instruments, scholarships, awards, and inschool concerts.

Dale A. McNulty Children’s Concert Series Peter and the Wolf

I

n the fall of 2022, Palm Beach Symphony and Maestro Gerard Schwarz performed a newly imagined version of Sergei Prokofiev’s musical masterpiece, Peter and the Wolf, featuring two-time Grammy-Award winner Jon Secada as narrator. The Symphony performed for thousands of students at the Dolly Hand Cultural Arts Center and The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. A family concert was also held at Eissey Campus Theater.

Eudora’s Fable: THE SHOE BIRD

I

n the fall of 2021, Palm Beach Symphony presented Eudora’s Fable: The Shoe Bird, based on Eudora Welty’s book The Shoe Bird, collaborating with the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County and the Young Singers of the Palm Beaches.

The production of the musical fable, filmed by a multiple Emmy Award-winning American director, reached thousands of students and families nationally through a collaboration with PBS Broadcasting.

This competition was created to honor Mary Hilem Taylor, Felicia’s mother, and help ease the financial burden for young music students across South Florida. Palm Beach Symphony awarded three winners with a total of $25,000 in cash prizes and a side-by-side performance opportunity with the Symphony’s principal musicians.

Lisa Bruna B-Major Award Every musician starts somewhere, and through the Lisa Bruna B-Major Award, Palm Beach Symphony gives advanced-level instruments to high school seniors planning to pursue a degree in music. In 2023, the Symphony awarded three winners.

Prelude Society

With a 30% increase from the previous year, members enjoyed pre/ post-concert dinners, and other exclusive VIP events.

For the 2022-23 season, we introduced the Prelude Society, a newly formed membership level in support of Palm Beach Symphony. Jeff Lichtenstein and Echo Fine Properties, as well as Stephen LaForte and Fifth Third Bank were the primary sponsors for Prelude Society’s Founding Season. Members also enjoyed a delightful evening at the Benzaiten Creative Arts Studios with music and a specially curated glass-blowing demonstration by internationally recognized artisans.

Sixth Annual Holly Jolly Symphony Fête Through the combined efforts of the Palm Beach Symphony Ladies Guild, Chairs Karen and Kenneth Rogers, Holly Jolly Host Committee and Music Men, the Holly Jolly Symphony Fête was a sold-out event with 370 guests in attendance, all thrilled to be helping dozens of students and school music programs with muchneeded instruments. The event raised more than $235,000 and presented 43 instruments to deserving students and school music programs. We also honored the 2022 Instrumental Music Teacher of Year, Paul Destito of Bak Middle School of the Arts.

Swings for Strings

Baton Society. Over one hundred guests joined the evening to honor former board chairman Leslie Rose as the fourth recipient of the Golden Baton Society Award; an award presented yearly to a patron who has given, accumulated over the years, more than $250,000.

Impresario Society Dinner Lugano Diamonds sponsored an exquisite one-of-a-kind dinner experience at a picturesque oceanfront home. Guests enjoyed a magical evening with fine music, gourmet cuisine, and good company.

Palm Beach Symphony had its most successful golf tournament, with nearly $75,000 raised and sold-out attendance. Significant support from Deutsche Bank, Findlay Galleries, HSS Florida, iThink Financial, NFP, PNC Wealth Management, Risk Strategies, and Wellington National fueled the tremendous achievement of the event.

Young Friends of Palm Beach Symphony Young Friends of Palm Beach Symphony members re-ignited with in-person social events to support the Symphony’s education initiatives.
