Romero uses automobile tires as a medium, carved into intricate patterns and imprinted onto textiles. The final works are hung to create an immersive environment. Andrea Juan’s enthralling floor to ceiling video installations New Species and Sea Images documents the unexpected effects of a warming planet while blending a Christo-like urge to adorn landscape in vibrant color. China: FUSION China: FUSION showcases emerging artists from China and highlights the artists’ fusion of East and West culture through content and form. The 3600-square-foot exhibition will be designed as a traditional Chinese style “9-Couleurs,” with the core exhibition area highlighting China’s cutting-edge artists of the 1970s and 1980s. Inception to Presentation For the 2013 LA Art Show, LAUNCH LA presents three Los Angeles based artists Todd Carpenter, Marion Lane, and Antonio Pelayo, each of whom will be on site during the fair to support the LAUNCH mission to encourage stronger artist–audience engagement. All three artists will be at the LAUNCH booth throughout the fair to directly engage and discuss in detail their process and execution of drawing and painting techniques from initial inspiration, to application of materials, and finally to the presentation of exhibition-ready work. The LA Art Show is proud to present Letters from Los Angeles: Text in Southern California Art as its featured exhibition of 2013. Conceived and curated by Jack Rutberg, in association with Aldis Browne, this exhibition puts a spotlight on this distinctive aspect of L.A. art. While “text in art” has long been broadly addressed in numerous exhibitions, Letters from Los Angeles may well represent the first time that text in L.A. art has been specifically addressed. It will no doubt serve as the impetus for further discourse and historical reflection. Curatorial Statement: L.A.’s association with typography in the visual arts is unique. Text has historically been ubiquitous on the city’s streets with advertisements, political placards, graffiti, and L.A.’s ever-present billboards that surfaced as far back as the onset of Southern California’s car culture and highway system at the turn of the last century. While other cities are represented by monumental structures such as San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, New York’s Empire State Building, the Acropolis in Athens, Big Ben in London, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, etc., L.A.’s most prominent symbols are text – most iconic is the Hollywood Sign, along with the great movie studio logos of MGM, 20th Century Fox, Warner Brothers, etc., which have been familiar to billions of people in each generation around the world for nearly a century. So it is perhaps understandable that Los Angeles has a pronounced affinity for the usage of text in the visual arts which distinguishes it from its historic precedents.

Typography in modern art first surfaced in the last decades of the 19th century with the invention of the original color lithographic poster, when artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Cheret, and Steinlen portrayed the demi-monde of Paris and in the process celebrated specific cafes, performers, liquors, and other new and essential products. Later, the abstract use of typography appeared in many avant-garde aspects of 20th century art, including the Cubists, Russian Constructivists, Bauhaus, Dada, Surrealists, and Pop artists. The artists featured in this Letters from Los Angeles exhibition have used text in extraordinarily diverse ways: immortalizing L.A.’s signs, streets, and gas stations; using comic book captions to convey dramatic angst, juxtaposing text with appropriated images; framing collages with wry observations and titles; surrealist re-configuring of old prints and clippings with snatches of verse and prose, employing the power of language to pose disquieting comments in conceptual works, often dealing with anti-war, racial, and gender issues. The range of approaches is as individual as the artists themselves. The vast and diverse ways that Southern California artists incorporate words, numerals, and text reflects an aesthetic that might even be seen as a logical antecedent to the current spotlight on contemporary graffiti and tattoo art. Since the 1960s, text in the art of L.A. was most popularized by Edward Ruscha, whose works are included in this exhibition. Letters from Los Angeles also includes works from the artist whose works were most ubiquitous in the 1960s - Corita Kent (1918-1986). Concurrent with the LA Art Show, Corita Kent’s works are the subject of a major retrospective exhibition at the Tang Museum at Skidmore College in New York, presented through the support of the Andy Warhol Foundation. Quoting the Warhol Foundation: “... Sister Corita, who achieved fame in the 1960s as a liberal activist artist nun ...incorporated text borrowed from a wide variety of sources, from advertising to literature to scripture. …their ingenious textual amalgams exhort viewers to create a better society, and mix secular and religious, pop culture and fine art, suffering and joy. As such they are a vibrant expression of the contradictions and enthusiasms of sixties culture.” 17

Theirs was by no means the first extensive use of typography in L.A. contemporary art. For example, from 1955 to 1964, Wallace Berman (1926-1976) brought typography and poetry together in a distinct and provocative way though a loose-leaf, free form art and poetry series entitled “Semina.” This now rare collection of “Semina” would ultimately be reconstructed [shown in this exhibition] by an artist closely associated with Berman, George Herms, one of the most significant collage artists to emerge from that generation.

In painting, while text can be seen in the anti-war canvases of Hans Burkhardt (19041994), as well as in his paintings reacting to the Hollywood labor wars at the end of WW II, this exhibition includes Burkhardt’s Basel Graffiti paintings of 1981, before the term “graffiti” was generally considered in the realm of fine art. Burkhardt’s extraordinary paintings were not graffiti art in and of themselves, but rather, formidable statements about graffiti and the plight of the street markmakers he encountered during travels to Basel, Switzerland. Burkhardt’s paintings are powerful reflections upon the urban landscape he witnessed; however, more directly, they capture the angst, as well as the hope, of a generation five decades younger than Burkhardt. With astounding expressionist verve, Hans Burkhardt’s are the most painterly works in Letters from Los Angeles.

While Los Angeles’ international recognition is acknowledged via text, it must be noted that Angelinos also self-identify with text, as no other city in the world refers to itself in both the written and spoken word so distinctly and interchangeably as we do with the initials: “L.A.” Letters from Los Angeles offers but one aspect of Los Angeles’ history. At a time when many have mythologized the contemporary art of this city into a neat simple equation or school or group of artists, such as those associated with the important Ferus Gallery of the 1960s, we recognize this amazing and expansive realm of L.A. history. It might very well be regarded as “Ferus’ Day Off.” *

A particularly fitting location, The LA Art Show’s exhibition, Letters from Los Angeles: Text in Southern California Art begins immediately upon entering the Los Angeles Convention Center where two monumental works – terrazzo floors by Alexis Smith - reside. The South Hall Lobby of the Convention Center features an expansive map of the Pacific Rim. Spanning 50,000 square feet, this work is inset with medallions depicting cultural motifs from Pacific Rim cultures. The Convention Center’s West Hall Lobby floor reveals Smith’s night sky on its two levels. Whether viewed in close proximity by standing within their space or by engaging them from an upper vantage point, they are remarkable for their beauty. The J. Paul Getty Museum defines its mission as encouraging the appreciation and understanding of visual art and its history, contexts, and meanings. In support of this mission, the Museum’s Education Department works to enhance visitors’ direct experiences with works of art, taking a leadership role in developing high-quality programs, written materials, and educational spaces that strongly connect a broad range of audiences to the Museum, its collections, and special exhibitions. The initiatives and programs of the Department reflect a strong commitment to K–12 students and their teachers, as well as audiences that include children and their families, post-secondary faculty and students, and adults and scholars. Since 2005 the Department has granted fully subsidized bus transportation to Title I schools, annually bringing more than 70,000 students and their teachers for single visits to the J. Paul Getty Museum’s two locations: the Getty Center in Los Angeles and the Getty Villa in Malibu. Additionally, partnerships with school communities and cultural and community organizations provide young people with opportunities for longer-term, in-depth learning experiences.

The Ar t of Elysium is honored to be a participant in the 18th annual Los Angeles Art Show for the 3rd consecutive year. We are thrilled to have their continued support of our efforts to build bridges between the professional arts community, and children whose lives are constrained by illness. Founded in 1997, our “full-circle” mission helps fuel new artistic work and advance careers while bringing improved quality of life and emotional healing through the arts to medically fragile children and their families. We reach into local and national ar ts communities supporting the arts at ever y level. The Art of Elysium’s focused commitment to helping artists build their careers and fulfill their artistic vision, so that they can in turn help ill youth, creates a self-sustaining model of operating that is cost efficient, artistically compelling, and replicable in other communities. Each discipline annually honors a volunteer artist who has dedicated their time to inspire hospitalized children through The Art of Elysium programs.

A “Bon à tirer” is the final definitive proof approved by the artist before the printer starts printing the edition. At the age of 72 and inspired by a postcard sent from Germany by Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, “Portrait de Jeune Fille d’apres Cranach le Jeune” served as the initial composition of a theme, followed days later by this second composition, which remains today one of the most important works in this medium. This is one of the most important prints from Picasso’s entire graphic oeuvre.

We invite collectors to enjoy the concentrated focus presented by our members in the Print Fair in addition to the IFPDA dealers who will showcase prints alongside works in other media in the Show’s larger exhibition area. As one of the oldest IFPDA sponsored Print Fairs, the IFPDA Los Angeles Fine Print Fair adds immeasurably to the LA Art Show’s extensive depth, offering collectors and art enthusiasts access to works of the highest quality and provenance. Exhibitors in the 2013 edition of the Print Fair offer engravings, etchings, woodcuts, and lithographs made by prominent artists over a broad historical spectrum, with prices ranging from under $500 to five-figures and above.

The opportunity to see and acquire works of art dating from 16th century, created by the medium’s earliest European masters can be very exciting. R. E. Lewis & Daughter and Joel R. Bergquist Fine Prints are among the Print Fair’s dealers who specialize in identifying and sourcing rare material from the 16th to 19th centuries for museums and private collectors. Conrad Graeber Fine Art also presents fine examples of 19th and 20th century European works as well as American prints from the early 20th century through the 1950s. Prints made by artists associated with the WPA and in particular, color woodcuts by California artists influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, are plentiful at The Annex Galleries and Roger Genser. Tobey C. Moss Gallery provides a special concentration in Los Angeles modernists from the 1930s to 2007. Susan Teller Gallery, exhibiting outside the Print Fair, features American paintings, prints, and unique works on paper, of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, including the WPA era, Urban and Industrial Realism, and modernism. For those fascinated by Japan’s centuries-long engagement with printmaking, Egenolf Gallery presents artists from 17th century Ukiyo-e to 20th century Shin Hanga, with a special focus on preparatory ink drawings by 19th century artists such as Kuniyoshi. Dealer Allison Tolman/The Tolman Collection features the work of contemporary Japanese printmakers, including Toko Shinoda, whose work merges traditional calligraphy with modern abstract expression. The Verne Collection also concentrates on contemporary prints, emphasizing artists currently living and working in Japan who reinterpret traditional Japanese themes and printmaking techniques. The rich history of printmaking is complemented by IFPDA dealers, both within and outside the Print Fair, offering works by contemporary artists. Jonathan Novak Contemporary Art, with a large booth outside the Print Fair, heads this list with a blue-chip presentation of paintings, drawings, sculpture, and prints by modern and contemporary masters such as Sam Francis, Jim Dine, Richard Diebenkorn and many more. Stoney Road Press, a Dublin-based publisher new to the Fair, presents works by Ireland’s leading contemporary artists. London’s Paul Stolper arrives with new editions by Damien Hirst, Don Brown, and Peter Blake. Kleinprint presents Central and Eastern European printmakers, many of whom are new to American collectors. Since the 16th century, artists have turned to printmaking to express unique ideas. Many of today’s leading artists still use the time-honored techniques of engraving, etching, woodcut, and lithography, in addition to more modern processes such as screenprinting, to create small editions and works of art distinct from those they create in other media. The International Fine Print Dealers Association was formed to recognize art dealers, galleries, and publishers with outstanding expertise and to foster a greater public appreciation and understanding of prints from old master to contemporary. Since its founding in 1987, the Association has grown to over 160 elected members from thirteen countries and includes publishers of new editions by renowned contemporary and emerging artists. In addition to educational lectures and programs, the IFPDA sponsors the IFPDA Los Angeles Fine Print Fair which has a longstanding reputation as an ideal environment in which to learn about and collect prints from all periods. Its dealers are seasoned professionals with a commitment to education and to offering affordable works of the highest quality. Fine Print Fair presented by the International Fine Print Dealers Association (IFPDA). We are delighted and honored to participate in the show and look forward to greeting you at our booth. The Los Angeles Printmaking Society (LAPS) is a national non-profit organization dedicated to the encouragement of printmaking as an art form and the support of artists who make prints and student printmakers in schools. Our exhibitions, print exchanges and events create a forum for artists and the public to engage and learn more about printmaking. We encourage the inclusion of a wide range of printmaking, encompassing both traditional and experimental techniques. LAPS makes resources available to artists, art collectors and the general public through our website and quarterly journal, the Interleaf. We organize regular membership exhibitions, including national and international exchange shows. We are proud to introduce The LA Print Space, our new exhibition venue at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, where you can see our print exhibitions locally and participate in many of our events. Since 1973, LAPS has organized the notable National Print Exhibition. The LAPS National is unique in presenting recent work from many of the celebrated presses of Los Angeles alongside works from individual artists selected from across the United States and Canada. This approach creates an invigorating dialogue on the state of the art of printmaking. Our Nationals are also unique in providing catalogs documenting each of the 20 exhibitions to date. The LAPS National is one of the largest, longest running print biennials in the nation. The 21st LAPS National will be held at California State University Northridge (CSUN), from October 26 to December 14, 2013 and juried this year by Jack Rutberg of Jack Rutberg Fine Arts, a well known and well regarded dealer, curator, collector and consultant for more than 30 years in Los Angeles. he 2013 LA Art Show presents a special exhibitionChina: FUSION- organized by China’s National Base for International Culture Trade, under the commission and guidance of the China Ministry of Culture and Shanghai Municipal Culture Radio and Television Bureau. China: FUSION showcases emerging artists from China and highlights the artists’ fusion of Eastern and Western culture through content and form. The 3600 square feet of exhibition space will be designed as a traditional Chinese style “9-Couleurs,” with the main exhibition area highlighting Chinese artists who were cutting-edge between the 1940s and the 1980s. Flanking this area are eight contemporary art galleries from Beijing and Shanghai, each featuring some of China’s top artists, with a total of over 100 pieces of artwork.
Main Exhibition For decades, Chinese artists have been striving for a conscious blending of Chinese and Western art. In the 1920s, Lin Fengmian became a frontline pioneer of this endeavor and advocated for a synthesis of the traits in Chinese and Western art. Lin claimed to have been the first to incorporate Western art concepts into Chinese artistic expression. This exhibition’s theme is FUSION. Apart from being an endeavor to share creative contemporary artistic expression and lifestyle through a now fearless exchange between Chinese and Western traditions and culture, the exhibition pays special attention to the interpretation of Western and Eastern art. Works were selected from Chinese artists in different age groups in order to cast a spotlight on the relationship between traditional Chinese culture and contemporary art and lifestyle in Western and Eastern worlds in the 40-year-span between 1940 and 1980. With a strong impact on artistic creation, traditional cultural influences are fused seamlessly into inspiring artistic explorations to form the contemporary artistic expression of today.

Liu Yi, an artist, graduated from the Beijing Film Academy after finishing his secondary high school study in the Middle School affiliated with the China Academy of Art. He has been awarded several times for his contributions to art direction in several box-office blockbuster films like The Red Detachment of Women, Xiao Hua, Miao Miao, and Sunset Street. In 1989, Liu Yi and his wife settled in Australia. He became deeply involved in this foreign environment with a completely different cultural background which offered him new insights into the understanding of artistic expression. Attempting to blend into local life, he adopted an intriguing approach of incorporating Chinese painting techniques and colors into his works to express his views and emotions. The painting Luoti Xieyi was created after he arrived in Australia. Li Fuyuan, born in 1942, became a student of Wu Guanzhong, who is perhaps the best-known contemporary Chinese painter in the world, at the age of 16 and was influenced by his teacher’s creation style. He developed a solid understanding of Western modernist painting characteristics and theories, and allowed new art concepts derived from the application of point, line and plane, color composition and comparison, and the composition of repetition and variety to dominate his work. The bold use of black and white, and rich, strong colors are commonly found in Li Fuyuan’s paintings. To ensure the quality of the colors, he never mixed them with black ink, but preferred to put heavy black ink against bright colors to create contrast, allowing them to support, embrace, and complement each other. Li is in pursuit of simplicity, honesty, and strong emotional response via his work. Several of his paintings were auctioned at Sotheby’s Hong Kong. Deng Yonggang, also known as bkra shis dar rgyas, is an ethnic artist. He made a brand new interpretation of specific features in Tangkar and Tibetan paintings. In his search for revolutionary visual experiences to be added into his paintings, he has given new meanings to traditional patterns by image apposition, paste-up, and space arrangement. His mother is the person who has influenced him most during his days in school. Therefore, many of his works can be regarded as high praises directed toward women. His Mother of the Earth series is considered an expression of his wish to love mothers the way we love ourselves. A group of mothers with robust bodies sits down on the earth. Trees grow inside their bodies to serve as the most vivid form of expression of life and vitality. Chang Yan was born in Gansu province. He spent his childhood at the feet of Qilian Mountain. His paintings, the Scarf series, are full of regional characteristics, featuring traditional female characters wearing colorful scarves living at the feet of Qilian Mountain. These paintings are influenced by traditional wall paintings with reduced realism and a focus on the display of each character’s personality. Obedience can be seen from the eyes of female characters in these paintings. They start to work when the sun rises and go to sleep when the sun sets. Their spirits of fortitude are vivid in the paintings. The paintings are created with a monochromatic pattern, which is a blending of Chinese and Western artistic expressions.

Ren Xianyin was born in a small city nearby Dunhuang. He was influenced by Chinese traditional culture while growing up, and he was immersed in stage arts and graphic design. His works, however, are not confined to visible phenomena and rational expressions. He always pays special attention to his works’ spirits and abstraction factors, which is closer to Western logical thinking. Xianyin believes that using abstraction to reflect natural objects, and express complicated personal feelings and emotions will produce visual tension.

Bai Hongwei grew up in Shanghai but his homeland is in northern China. By chance, he learned something about Chinese ink and water painting and was then inspired to paint with traditional water and ink painting using Western oil painting techniques. Pan Xinyi is the only female artist in the main exhibition. Strong color and comparison can be found in her works. Abrupt detail design is her way of expressing her views and thoughts about the current society. The metaphors behind her paintings define her particular style. This type of black humor makes her paintings funny and intriguing; repression is suppressed. It is a wellknown fact that the Chinese economy has maintained rapid growth in the 30 years since 1978. At the same time, from the government to the general public, the Chinese people have developed an addictive chronic dependence on rapid economic growth. Even after 2008, as the Chinese economic growth has slowed due to the impact of the global financial crisis, the government has still proposed an “above 8%” target, which aims to ensure that the rate of economic growth stays over 8%. This painting attempts to explain the contradictory nature of the economy in Chinese people’s minds today. On the one hand, the economy has made remarkable achievements, and is full of temptations, just like a beautiful woman full of allure. On the other hand, it is a wild unforgiving monster whose footsteps have destroyed China’s once pristine environment, changing Chinese people’s carefree pastoral lifestyle into one of “artificial urbanization” plagued by ubiquitous pollution and noise. Pan Xinyi states that her intention for the art piece shown is to “remind the Chinese people today to take a look around themselves and that they should see a lot more than simply “8%.”

These seven Chinese artists, who are being showcased in China: FUSION’s main exhibition and whose works range from the 1940s to the 1980s, are representative of their own age group. Their works intend to offer the audience a chance to understand the connection between Chinese contemporary art and a realistic life, to further emphasize the exhibition’s theme: FUSION.
Wang Xiaosong is trying to integrate this natural and harmonious Chinese poetic beauty with the Western tragic heroic concept. Such attempt brings out works like The Writhe, where there are crowds of miniature human beings, like pouring rain or raging flames. This is a metaphor of the integration of joy and sadness which may express his attempt to combine the tragic heroic and romantic styles.
Artistic Crossroads and Integration Integration between different ethnic groups forms the basis of our society, just as different pieces of information complement each other to form our culture. Society progresses by integration, and culture develops by different cultures coming together. The blending and collision of Eastern and Western cultures have existed for over a century; if we examine the developmental history of painting in China, many artists have effectively integrated and borrowed ideas from Western art both in terms of form, medium, content, and ways of thinking. This form of cultural integration has manifested itself in works of art, and has provided us with a license to think and express our ideas in many different ways. The resulting artistic works are more rich and varied than those from any other period.
Works within gallery spaces that are part of China: FUSION include: At first glance, Wang Xiaosong’s works are crowded with small points and circles, representing garbled codes, symbols, ants, and miniature human beings. All these symbols are pressed out from the back of a special steel plate. Artificial and natural, accidental and inevitable, they exhibit fine technique and cultural concepts. All his works are born out of calculated restrictions, including the concave and convex that influence the choice of symbol, color, and form; the positions and orders that restrict the arrangements of different forms; the numbers that limit the image of the picture, etc., all are situated within extreme restrictions, struggling to expand from boundary to boundlessness, from subtlety to infinity. Looking from a distance, this artist’s work borders the chaotic. 172

Zhou Guangwei’s art road has gone full circle: beginning in China, leading him to the West, and returning again to the Orient. Zhou studied in the Goethe Institute in Frankfurt, Germany in 1988, received his Masters Degree from Dusseldorf Art Institute of Architecture in 1996, and worked in architectural design in Germany until 2008. He is now a German citizen residing in Shanghai.

Zhou decided to focus on contemporary art in 2010, and to be an artist combining Chinese and Western art ideas and ways of presentation, independent thinking, and free creation. Zhou has created a number of German-style works concerning the practical and realistic problems currently in China.

Act rashly and alert the enemy reflects the full dynamics of his artistic style and means a cautious situation. According to the original text: “stirring grass may alert the snake”—an old Chinese saying, one should check out and clarify every doubt, and then move on; by remembering to do this, one can cast a light on the hidden truth. The image fabricated together with ancients not only gets the significance of the so-called pop, but also possesses a power that has passed from mouth to mouth, from generation to generation, since ancient times. Like Monroe painted by Andy Warhol, this power is a history compared to the present, gaining strength to infinitely extend horizontally and vertically.

Zhu Zhe Chi is a well-acclaimed artist whose works have been displayed in numerous prestigious galleries including Beijing’s The National Art Museum of China and the Shanghai Liu Hai Su Art Museum. He has also had several solo exhibitions in Paris, Los Angeles, and New York. Zhu Zhe Chi draws his inspiration from nature, humanity, music, and motherhood. His paintings reflect his vibrant and compassionate personality. Before focusing on painting, he worked as an ice sculptor for more than 10 years and won several international ice sculpting awards. In 2011, Zhe Chi was invited to become a special guest artist member of The International Artists Association of America. Zhe Chi currently shuttles between Shanghai and New York. Wu Aizheng, as well as being an avid artist, is also a member of the Shanghai Artists Association, an art museum curator at Ai Shen, the academy vice president at Dianshan Lake, a deputy president for the Qingpu painting and Calligraphy Association, and a Department of Animation course lecturer at Nanjing Arts Institute Vocational Institute. In Wu Aizheng’s view, Chinese painting is the essence of ancient Chinese culture. It is in the methods of transmitting and techniques, through different periods of continuation and development, that a unique Oriental painting language is formed.

Shi Tao, a well-known Chinese painter is the enlightenment mentor for Fan Xueyi. Shi Tao’s landscape works are always freestyle in language but exquisite in form, expressing a fantastic ancient spirit. Calligraphy is an important element in Fan Xueyi’s life. Fan believes that an artist uses calligraphy as background of a painting, using acrylic to paint as well as leaving some space on the original red lines on the paper. This process mixes the spirit of Chinese painting and Western painting methods, to produce a new expression, a way of “Scene out of the scene” and “Image out of the image.” This mixed media work is filled with emotions and tensions with Shi Tao’s classical words as background. Los Angeles, January 2013. Dear Friends and Art Lovers, On behalf of ADC & BUILDING BRIDGES International Art Exchange, Iam pleased to welcome you to Los Angeles Art Show. We are honored to participate another year alongside with known galleries and organizations from all over the world. We want to give special thanks to LA ART SHOW for the opportunity to participate in this important moment for Los Angeles Art Scene. Since 2005 ADC & BUILDING BRIDGES has organized international art exchanges with the participation of over 25 countries, with traveling exhibitions and artists in residence. The organization developed a focused tactic for cultural exchanges through art in collaboration with several governments, other non-profit organizations and foundations in order to strengthen international cultural relations and engaging local communities while promoting new and emerging forms of artistic expressions. During 2012, we performed exchanges and exhibitions in Antofagasta, Chile, “Artists in Residence Program” in Mexico with five countries and we participated at the International Prize Bice Bugatti at Bugatti Foundation, receiving with our participant artists the first, second and third prizes (Miranda, Romero and Sarsale from Mexico and Argentina) and the participation of our organization as a jury and supporter for the Sharjah International Children Biennial at the United Arab Emirates. We schedule for 2013 our exchanges with Bice Bugatti from Milano, Italy and Qatar. We encourage you to visit two mega installations that will be presented by us at the LA ART SHOW, from our two renowned artists, Andrea Juan from Argentina and Betsabee Romero Mexico. ADC Contemporary & BUILDING BRIDGES International Art Exchange Is a nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to cultivate an understanding among cultures worldwide through international art exhibitions and artist residency programs. The organization has developed a more focused tactic for cultural exchanges through art and international collaborations. ADC & BUILDING BRIDGES currently plays as a nexus between artists, Cultural Art Centers, and countries throughout the world, and acts as an important reference point with the International Art Exchange Program. Building Bridges’ first project was launched in January 2008 in Mexico, under a formal agreement with the Mexican government and in connection with 14 foreign countries. Their main mission is to have powerful programs for exhibitions, workshops, and artist residencies, establishing exchanges among countries in order to strengthen international cultural relations and engage local communities while promoting new and emerging forms of artistic expressions. The program provides the artists of our country’s members the best possible support, information, and opportunities for Art Exhibitions and exposure throughout the world. ADC & BUILDING BRIDGES has an exhibition-rotating system to highlight our shared cultures and establish fresh exchanges; every member country has access to different exhibitions, as well as the participation in International Art Fairs to promote their own culture and artists. ANDREA JUAN ARGENTINA SERIES NEW SPECIES
Curated by Marisa Caichiolo and Laura Pomerantz. BETSABEE ROMERO MEXICO Romero, one of the world’s top Latin-American artists, has shown extensively in both Europe and the Americas. Her current acclaimed body of work uses automobile tires as a medium, which she carves into intricate patterns and imprints onto textiles. The final works are hung to create an immersive environment that has been described by critics as “ingenious.” Betsabee Romero has exhibited at the Neuberger Museum of Art to high praise by art critics from the New York Times and Art in America. Romero’s tire installation will be situated prominently in between the Modern & Contemporary and Historic & Traditional Contemporary sections of the Show. “An observer of human behavior, Betsabée Romero breaks onto the contemporary art scene between memory and oblivion, rootedness and rootlessness, permanence and transience. Parameters enveloped in an aura of tracks that leave their imprint on the depths of urban life, its respective speed and culture of consumption, and amidst the migratory reality, violence and contradictions intrinsic to modernity. Prints made on recycled and engraved tires, on pneumatic strips, car hoods and even toy cars dressed up in cultural traits. Iconography made up of found objects, decontextualized and given new meaning.” Laura Pomerantz. 180
New Species documents the unexpected effects of a warming planet, through changes in the glaciers in the Antarctic Peninsula. As the ice shelves retreat, a treasure-trove of new specimens in the Weddell Sea are uncovered, and a hidden ecosystem revealed. Her second video, Sea Images will accompany New Species. Juan seamlessly blends environmental concerns with a Christo-like urge to adorn landscape in vibrant color. She states, “The idea was to take art to Antarctica and develop short-lived sites-specifics as a praise of sorts, displaying a peaceful presence. And once the exhibition came to an end, the biosphere was to be left just as it had been found. The only trace/work that has remained is a series of video and photographic records plus the recollections of the inhabitants.” Andrea Juan was born in Argentina, she has a degree in Visual Arts. Her work is based in scientific research and has a reflective content about the environment. She works in the disciplines of video, installation, photography, and graphic work. In 2007, she received a grant from the government of Canada and a former Guggenheim fellowship in New York, UNESCO, France, Antorchas Foundation, and National Endowment for the Arts in Argentina. She completed residencies in Art Omi International Art Center in New York, Center for research in Visual Arts at the University of Quebec in Canada, and the the Cultural Center in Vienna, Austria. In 2004 she started with the Antarctica Project making video Installations and performances in Antarctica, Argentina.

Dear Friends, The California Art Club, one of the oldest, largest and most active fine arts organizations in the United States, is honored to participate in this year’s Los Angeles Art Show. We look forward to welcoming you at our booth and hope you will also view our special exhibition at the show – Human Landscape – which spotlights works from our premier figurative painters. Since 1909, the California Art Club has been dedicated to promoting the merits of traditional fine arts and continuing the legacy of the organization’s founding artists, who migrated to the Los Angeles area from the Midwest and East Coast, chiefly drawn to the Golden State’s unrivaled landscapes, natural beauty and year-round sunshine. With conditions ideal for outdoor painting, these artists gave birth to a new artistic movement now known as “California Plein Air” or “California Impressionism.” As a dynamic nonprofit educational organization with more than 2,500 members around the world, the Club strives to expand the knowledge and appreciation of traditional fine arts through our educational programs, award-winning publications, and exhibitions. Our hallmark annual event – the Gold Medal Juried Exhibition – is now in its 102nd year and will be on display in Los Angeles at the USC Fisher Museum of Art from June 2 – 23, 2013. With this display and the many others that we present at museums, galleries and historic sites throughout the state, we support a network of contemporary–traditional fine artists and provide opportunities for art enthusiasts, collectors, students and scholars to interact with these artists in order to better understand the creative process. Mindful of the huge impact that emerging artists make to all aspects of our shared quality of life, LAAA believes that emerging artists, even the most non-traditional talents, require access to a professional exhibition space and the career support to expand and realize their singular artistic visions. The successes and expanded services we provide to local artists and art advocates address important needs not confronted by most civic and cultural agencies. By filling this need LAAA has developed into an essential resource for Los Angeles’ emerging artists. R. Dean Larson’s series of ocean abstracts focuses on the ocean’s movements. From the breaking of the wave, the water rushing up on the sand, to the point where the foam almost stops, Larson has isolated moments of movement in the waves and in the interaction between the water and the shore.

Scott Davis Jones’ work is about intimacy. In The Village, Jones’ tiny landscape requires close inspection but affords the viewer very little concrete information, intensifying the feeling of romance and longing.
Marilyn Lowey Los Angeles-based artist Marilyn Lowey creates installations that investigate the use of light as an optical, sculptural, and psychological spectacle. Drawing on her extensive experience as a professional lighting designer, Lowey utilizes a range of devices, including computerized fixtures and handmade light bulbs, to dynamically cast or embody light. “Translating Transitions #4 (day 1 creation of light & time)” is a dynamic electric light and video sculptural installation that plays with narrative and abstraction, assaulting and disrupting visual perception by totally different but equally beautiful means.
Grafton Tanquary is an LA photographer who is primarily interested in the extraordinary colors available with today’s new printing technology. The Highlands is a more subtle image from his Palisades Series.

Patricia Yossen’s body of work depicts flat lands where the sky holds a prominent place in the composition, emerging from the long horizontal line of the earth and filling the void with puffy cumulus nimbus – a reference to the solitude of endless open space. Yossen’s landscapes become metaphors, expressions of space, physical manifestations of that which is part of the psyche and not, per se, nature. 189

Participation in this event facilitates LAUNCH’s mission to create new platforms and audiences for the next generation of art-makers. Over the past twelve months, LAUNCH produced exhibitions and performance projects for over 150 artists in Los Angeles at five different sites, including galleries, temporary spaces, and art fairs. Thousands of Californians have visited these exhibitions and events to discover, experience, and support important projects by emerging artists in multiple disciplines. LAUNCH began a busy 2012 with the production of two art exhibitions: a solo exhibition featuring Antonio Pelayo and a three-person painting and sculpture exhibition. We then hosted the release of a music video that featured contributions from a painter, an animator, and an alternative rock band. These events took place at 5900 Wilshire Blvd. through our partnership with The Ratkovich Company and the Miracle Mile Chamber of Commerce. In May, LAUNCH returned to ArtPad SF art fair presenting works curated by Merry Karnowsky Gallery. In August, LAUNCH sponsored and facilitated the 2nd annual production of BOOM, a student-produced survey of recent candidates and graduates from 10 local MFA programs in Southern California. Over 100 artists participated in a month-long exhibition at the Pacific Design Center. The tenth annual TARFEST art exhibition in September included 35 artists selected from over 200 participants of the nine previous TARFEST juried exhibitions. This exhibition was curated by Holly Harrison of LACMA. The La Brea Tar Pits was again the site of the TARFEST Music and Art Festival held on September 22nd. Six bands and 4 painters performed for and inspired over 3,000 Angelenos of all ages and backgrounds at this free event. Also in September, Todd Carpenter presented new paintings for the inaugural exhibition at LAUNCH Gallery on LaBrea Avenue. Next, LAUNCH Gallery presented two recent local graduates: painter Fleurette West (Art Center) and ceramicist Thomas Dang (C.S. Northridge) in October, while painter Marion Lane exhibited from November through January 12th. Finally, Claremont Graduate University alumnus Gina Stepaniuk opens the 2013 season on Saturday, February 2nd of this year.
