Canterbury School, founded in 1915 by Roman Catholic laymen, is a coeducational, boarding and day school of approximately 350 students, grades 9-12, PG. The Roman Catholic commitment of the School remains central.

Canterbury School is a non-profit institution that seeks and admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin, and does not discriminate in the administration of its programs and policies.

The Canterbury Observer is a regular feature of the PALLIUM. It is a forum for any and all alumni, faculty, and friends of Canterbury to share their thoughts and interests. Views do not necessarily express the philosophy of Canterbury School.

PALLIUM A circular band about two inches wide, a pallium is made of white wool and worn over the chasuble around the neck, breast, and shoulders. With its two pendants draping down in the back and front, respectively, a pallium is also marked by six black crosses of silk. The wearing of the pallium dates to the Fourth Century. It was first given to St. Augustine by Pope Gregory the Great, and each successive archbishop has worn one. A representation of the pallium appears in the center of the School seal, as well as in the School’s logotype.

Jim Hayes ’55 gives his acceptance speech in which he talked about his deceased classmate Dick Higgins, who contracted polio while at Canterbury, and, despite having lived the rest of his life with an iron lung, accomplished so much in his life, including having a long teaching career at College of the Holy Cross.

Jim Hayes has enjoyed a distinguished career in a variety of diverse fields: magazine publishing, education, international theater, corporate management, and the independent sector. In 1959, Jim joined Time Inc. and for the next 23 years held various executive positions at Sports Illustrated in New York and Detroit. In 1992, he became Advertising Sales Director of Money magazine and was named Pubisher of Fortune magazine in 1986, a position Jim held until retiring in 1994. Jim has served on various boards, including the Morehouse School of Medicine, where he was Chairman from 1992-1995 and Ashworth, Inc., a leisure wear company. In 1987, Jim began his involvement with Junior Achievement. From 1991-1993, he served as the organization’s Chairman, and he retired as President and CEO in 2001. In 2013, he moved to Michigan to work on the revitalization of Detroit, creating the Detroit Homecoming, a unique initiative that reconnects Detroit’s expat community with their former hometown. After graduating from Canterbury, Jim attended Georgetown University and served for two years with the U.S. Army in Europe.

The Very Rev. Judy Sullivan ’74, reminisced about what it was like to be one of nine of Canterbury’s first female students in 1971.

At Saturday morning’s Convocation, Tom Sheehy talked about Canterbury’s growth in the past 25 years. He also spoke about his retirement and the pride he feels in leading the School to its centennial year.

Canterbury School will proudly celebrate its Centennial anniversay during the 2015-2016 school year.

The June Reunion Weekend initiated Canterbury’s Centennial observations with food, fireworks, and fellowship. The Centennial website (www.cbury.org/ Page/Timeline) which launched this spring provides historical information on various aspects of Canterbury’s first 100 years. But we’re not done yet. We are planning several events involving students, graduates, parents, and friends for the coming year, the first of which will be an All-School Convocation on September 30, the day Canterbury opened 100 years ago. Throughout the 2015-2016 school year, you will receive four special issues of the PALLIUM, one for each quarter century. The first issue, covering the founding in 1915 through 1939, is scheduled for distribution in October.

Canterbury’s 100th year is a milestone giving us an opportunity to celebrate our past with pride as we look to the future with optimism.

On the evening of May 6, Most Rev. Daniel Cronin, S.T.D., Archbishop Emeritus of Hartford, confirmed eleven Canterbury students and three students from St. Francis Xavier parish. During the school year, the students met with Chaplain Fr. Sebastian Leonard, O.S.B., who prepared them for the sacrament, and he presented them to the Archbishop on the night of the ceremony.

Before the ceremony, guests dined in Copley Library and, after the ceremony, enjoyed a reception at the Headmaster’s house.

In a celebration of world cultures represented at Canterbury, the community participated in International Days this spring. Women of Canterbury’s mission is to develop leadership potential in young women and instill an appreciation of the role women can play in local and global communities. To achieve these goals, the organization arranges educational and social events for students that enhance awareness of issues important to women.

Peter Tucker ’78 Addresses Sixth Form The faculty and Sixth Form gathered in Steele Hall Dining Room on the evening of May 19 to enjoy a great meal and hear Peter Tucker ’78, President of the Society of Alumni. Peter urged the Class of 2015 to use their Canterbury connections and to cherish their Canterbury friendships. Peter has three siblings who graduated from Canterbury: Paul ’68, Carlton ’73, and Libby ’76. Their mother, Mary Elizabeth Tucker, served as one of Canterbury’s first female trustees.

The dinner is also when the recipient of the Class of 1987 Citzenship Award is announced.

Bryan Kiefer Receives 2015 Yearbook Dedication

At the school meeting on May 19, Bryan Kiefer, a history and economics teacher, received the 2014-2015 Cantuarian dedication.

The annual Canterbury prom took place on Sunday, May 17. The festivities began with a pre-prom gathering at the Athletic Center. What’s the Buzz, Greg Coleman?

Greg Coleman ’72, President of BuzzFeed, spoke at the school meeting on April 21. BuzzFeed is an internet news media company known for its humorous lists, quizzes, and videos, although, recently, it has been expanding into serious news reporting. Greg described the BuzzFeed work environment as a lab: each employee is constantly testing, failing, testing, tweaking, failing, and testing again. Before a piece goes live, Buzzfeed writers can see how the piece will look on mobile devices, on Facebook, on Pinterest, and a variety of other social media sites.

BuzzFeed uses a content management system, which allows for immediate feedback and editing capabilities to its published pieces. An item uploaded at 10:00 a.m. may look very different by 10:00 p.m. To the delight of the student body, Greg played one of Purina’s “Dear Kitten” videos. Working with BuzzFeed, “Dear Kitten” has had more than 50 million views across multiple distribution platforms and seven episodes. The meeting concluded with a Q&A. Students were curious to know if Greg had always wanted to work in media publishing.

Greg’s answer, “I was not sure what I wanted to do. I was sure that I wanted to somehow graduate Canterbury,” drew laughter from the student body.

In a more serious vein, Greg added that while attending Georgetown University, one of his professors was also the president of Newsweek, which changed his focus and set him on his current path. As President of BuzzFeed, Greg is responsible for the management and growth of all facets of the business including sales, creative services, marketing, ad products and business development.

Before taking the position, Greg was President of Criteo, a global advertising technology and software company. He was formerly the president and Chief Revenue Officer at the Huffington Post.

Centennial Time Capsule Buried

On the night of the Faculty and Sixth Form dinner on May 19, members of the Class of 2015 placed objects into the Centennial Time Capsule. Items included a tee-shirt from the environmental club, a Christmas photo from Havemeyer House, copies of student publications “The Tabard” and “The Carillon,” work by AP Art students, and the teddy bear from the Girls’ Varsity Basketball team. Some Sixth Formers wrote letters to themselves, which were placed in the capsule by Henry Garcia, Student Government President. The capsule also contains a special copy of the yearbook signed by members of the class of 2015 and faculty.

The capsule was buried following the Honors Assembly on May 21. It will be opened in 25 years. Photo shows Sixth Formers Shane Sellar, Gabriella Carioscia, and Will Meyer lowering the capsule.

ailed as a “towering figure on Wall Street” by The New York Times, James B. “Jimmy” Lee, Jr. ’71, a Vice Chairman of JPMorgan Chase, died of a heart attack after working out in his home in Darien, CT, on June 17. He was 62.

Born in Danbury, CT, he joined Chemical Bank in 1975 and worked in a variety of lending businesses until 1980, when he founded and ran Chemical’s merchant bank in Australia. His career skyrocketed upon his return to the U.S. His father, James B. Lee, Sr., a graduate of Canterbury’s Class of 1933, was in 1948 named President of the Danbury-based Frank H. Lee Hat Company, concentrating on advertising and sales. He later moved his family to New Canaan.

During Jimmy’s four years at Canterbury, he excelled in both academics and athletics, earning honors in history and mathematics in his Sixth Form year and spots on the Varsity Football, Varsity Hockey (co-captain), and Varsity Track (co-captain) teams. In addition, he was co-editor-in-chief of the School newspaper, The Tabard, on the staff of the Carillon (literary and arts magazine), and a member of the Press Club. As a Sixth Former, he served on the Student-Faculty Senate. He received the Francis T. Carmody ’25 Award for creative talent in prose and the Harvard Prize Award for academic excellence and contributions to school life.

In his graduation speech to Canterbury’s Class of 2009, Jimmy told the newly-minted Saints, “While at Canterbury, I was early on regarded as a jock, but I also chose to write for The Tabard and became co-editor. It was a very unconventional choice because it went against the grain: a jock hanging out with hippies.”

When he was a Third Former, Jimmy lived on the top floor of North House, in what had been Jack Kennedy’s room when he attended the School in 1930. When it came time for Jimmy to apply to college, he again went against

the grain, dismissed the advice from then college counselor Rod Clarke ’46 and applied to only one school: Williams College. He got in. Jimmy often said throughout his early years and into his career he made “trust your instinct” choices, and that defined who he was. In the late 1990s, Jimmy served on Canterbury’s Board of Trustees.

At Williams College he majored in an unlikely combination of majors: Economics and Art History.

He was a fiercely loyal Eph who began his service on the Board of Trustees in 2012.

According to his obituary, Jimmy was the behind-the-scenes consigliere to the world’s top corporate chieftains, hatching mergers and public offerings for companies as diverse as General Motors, Facebook, and Alibaba. He was a constant presence in the lives of moguls like Rupert Murdoch of the News Corporation and Jeffrey Immelt of General Electric. He was a throwback, part of a different generation of bankers on Wall Street who were trusted advisers to corporate America based on deep relationships and insights, even as much of investment banking had become commoditized. Jimmy was a colorful character who was known for calling clients at all hours and signing emails “your pal.” Behind the trappings of Wall Street culture was a keen intellect.

He was an early pioneer of syndicated loans and became a powerful force in the world of leveraged buyouts and private equity, financing deals for Henry

Kravis of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, Stephen A. Schwarzman of the Blackstone Group, and the late Theodore J. Forssmann of Forssmann Little. Famous on Wall Street for the lengths he would go to woo a client, he bought a Corvette ZRl to demonstrate his dedication to GM during its initial public offering and had hoodies made for Facebook’s I.P.O. as a sartorial homage to its founder, Mark Zuckerberg.

He also looked the part of a high-powered banker, with slicked back hair, pinstriped suits, twotoned shirts, and cuff links. He often played the role of backstage mediator among companies and activist investors helping to end contentious battles between Carl C. Icahn and Dell, for example, and mentoring Daniel S. Loeb, the founder of Third Point. Inside JPMorgan, Mr. Lee was the firm’s rainmaker and one of its longest­ serving executives. He often used the firm’s enormous balance sheet to finance complicated transactions.

He was also a close friend and adviser to the bank’s chief executive, Jamie Dimon, whose office was just doors away from his.

When the bank was under investigation by the Justice Department and Mr. Dimon was

under pressure, Jimmy had Tom Brady, the quarterback of the New England Patriots, call Mr. Dimon to cheer him up and tell him to “hang in there.” On the day of Jimmy’s death, Mr. Dimon called Jimmy “invaluable,” adding, “Jimmy was a master of his craft, but he was so much more, he was an incomparable force of nature.” Jimmy was animated by the pursuit of the big deal, stoked by a competitive fire and a desire to be in the middle of the action.

In 2005, at a party honoring Jimmy, Mr. Dimon told a roomful of chief executives and buyout clients, “Jimmy Lee has probably lent a trillion dollars to the people in this room.” After pausing for effect, he added, “and almost all of it has been paid back.”

As word spread of Jimmy’s death on Wednesday, laudatory statements about him came pouring in from every corner. “Jimmy loved Wall Street more than anyone I’ve ever known,” Mr. Loeb said. “He wasn’t driven by money or deals but by his passion for people.

There was no more loyal friend to be had on Wall Street, nor anyone whose wise counsel I valued more. My last correspondence with Jimmy was a note from him titled ‘Bragging,’ where he told me about his son’s admission into a highly competitive securities analysis program at Columbia Business School. He signed off by telling me that despite his long and successful career, his ‘greatest accomplishment’ was his children” –his son, James, and his two daughters, Elizabeth and Alexandra.

They survive him, as does his wife, also named Elizabeth.

On the day of Jimmy’s death, Mr. Dimon called Mr. Lee “invaluable,” adding, “Jimmy was a master of his craft, but he was so much more – he was an incomparable force of nature.”

“Jimmy was my closest friend in finance,” Mr. Schwarzman said.

“It’s hard to explain. He always gave someone the sense–and it was true–that he cared desperately about you.” He played a key role in starting Chemical’s syndicated loan group in the 1980s, helping fuel a wave of buyouts and built the investment banking business as the bank became a bigger player through mergers with Manufacturers Hanover and Chase Manhattan Bank. He climbed the ladder to run Chase’s investment banking business and eventually rose to become Vice Chairman of JPMorgan Chase after the 2000 merger that created the company.

He advised on some on the biggest deals, including United Airlines’ acquisition of Continental, General Electric’s sale of NBC Universal to Comcast and the News Corporation’s purchase of Dow Jones. He scrambled to help save the American International Group during the financial crisis and later helped underwrite its I.P.O. He was loyal and considered leaving the firm only once. In his top desk drawer, he kept a copy of the term sheet to become the No. 2 at Blackstone. He most likely would have become a billionaire had he

taken the job, because it was not long before that firm went public.

He would occasionally show it to friends, in part to demonstrate his loyalty to JPMorgan and his colleagues. Mr. Schwarzman recounted how he had tried to recruit Mr. Lee away and nearly had a deal. “We had the press release ready,” Mr. Schwarzman said. Jimmy told him he needed he to speak with JPMorgan’s chief executive at the time, Bill Hamson.

He called Mr. Schwarzman back and told him he couldn’t do it.

“I told him, ‘Don’t feel badly.

You’re following your heart,’” Mr. Schwarzman said. “He had so much loyalty to the bank and the people there.”

Needless to say, Jimmy always followed his heart.

Jamie Dimon, in the first eulogy, said of his friend, “In business, you were brilliant, a shining star, one of the best we’ve seen. You were a nuclear power, a sun of positive energy, you had unbridled enthusiasm and optimism. Your dealmaking was legendary. You were simply a huge influence on the success of so many of us.”

Said Jeffrey Immelt in a statement on GE’s website, “Jimmy cared deeply about GE and knew many

of our leaders. He brought ideas and relationships. He was always our biggest cheerleader. He was with us in good days and bad.

He made us better. He was a loyal friend.”

In a statement in Bloomberg News, Jason Kelly wrote, “Jimmy’s success was that he was remarkably old school. He preferred phone calls to emails, and face-to-face meetings most of all.”

His funeral Mass was held at Manhattan’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral, a few blocks from where he worked. According to an article in The New York Times (June 23), “There, [Jimmy] shaped corporate America, and the nation’s biggest bank, through a career that established him as perhaps the pre-eminent deal maker of his generation. Honorary ushers in attendance included Michael R. Bloomberg; the media mogul Barry Diller; Roger Goodell, the National Football League commissioner; the chief executive of General Electric, Jeffrey R. Immelt; the television host Charlie Rose; and Stephen A. Schwarzman, chief executive of the private equity firm Blackstone. Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan presided.

A Remembrance of Jimmy Lee “Jimmy was a Sixth Former when our class arrived at Canterbury in the fall of 1970. The Class of 1971 was impressive, and they were a major influence in our lives. It was a class full of many talented individuals who went on to excel in all walks of life.

Jimmy Lee left us way too early, but his life and legacy will live on through all who knew and loved him. He accomplished much during his life, but what struck me most is that he was one of us, and Canterbury was an important part of his life.

Until Jimmy’s death, I had no idea his father also graduated from Canterbury. Many articles written about him spoke about Canterbury and one, in particular, featured pictures of the School and students during his four years as a student. In his eulogy at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Jamie Dimon spoke from his heart about Jimmy’s life and all the lives he touched, including his own. At the very end of his eulogy, Jamie spoke about Jimmy’s Canterbury graduation speech in 2009, “Shoot the Moon.” Additionally, Jimmy’s best friend, Michael McBride ’71, eulogized Jimmy.

The Class of 1974 has reconnected over the past couple of years, and it has been a wonderful experience for all of us. People talk about the ’70s as being a lost era in society and schools, but I must disagree. Based on the turnout for the Centennial Reunion and the strong turnout of our class two years running, many of us realized there are so many wonderful and talented students, now adults, who went to school during that time period. At the end of the day, we are Canterbury and represent Canterbury to all we meet during the course of our lives.

Jimmy’s death came on the heels of Reunion Weekend and shocked a lot of us, but it also made us realize what amazing individuals from all walks of life we were at school with during those years. Jimmy did not go to Hotchkiss, Deerfield, Groton, St. George’s, Exeter or Andover, he went to Canterbury. In light of our class’s reconnecting, attending the Centennial and seeing where the School is going, I can truthfully say I have never been prouder to be a graduate of Canterbury School.”

Memories of Jimmy Lee

J

immy Lee and I lived together for four years at Canterbury. Early in our Third Form year, Jimmy told me his father had died only a few years prior. My dad knew Jimmy’s father from their college days, so he decided the McBride family would take Jimmy under our wing. He became the fourth son in our family. We did everything together, holidays and vacations. After Jimmy went off to Williams College, he always confided in my dad, Joe, a no nonsense contractor and developer. My family became his surrogate family.

My dad always had a high degree of respect for Jimmy.

I remember in our Sixth Form year, we were playing Westminster in football, and we were behind. It was late in the fourth period, we were driving, and head coach Don Robert called in a play. In the huddle, Jimmy said “What a stupid play. Why don’t we use another play?” Of course, Jimmy’s play was a pass to him down the sideline. So I threw the ball to him, he caught it, and made it across the goal line. Meanwhile, coach Robert was screaming at me for calling the wrong play. At the same time, Jimmy was being mobbed by his teammates and the fans.

He was captain of the hockey team, but he couldn’t skate backwards. However, he was one of the team’s high scorers, and every time a puck went into the corner and he went up against a larger and more skilled player he always came out with the puck. Always.

When my father died, Jimmy started a college scholarship fund in Joe’s honor for the caddies and children of the employees at the National Golf Links of America. For many of these kids, these scholarships have been a game changer.

When Jimmy interviewed these kids, he was tough on them. He forced them to be better. He wasn’t looking for Einsteins. All he wanted was total effort on their part. Many of those kids have accomplished more than they thought they could ever achieve, and they owe it all to Jimmy Over the stone fireplace at Jimmy’s home is a replica of the motto on the Mark Hopkins gate at Williams College. It reads: “Climb High. Climb far.

Your goal the sky. Your aim the star.” That was the motto by which Jimmy lived his life, and that inscription was placed on his casket.

Although Jimmy had two younger sisters, he connected with my older sister Sheila. She died suddenly in 2007 of a head injury, very similar to how Jimmy died. So after Sheila’s funeral, Jimmy wrote an email to his children about the impact her death had on him. He forwarded a copy to me. My daughter found the email while we were looking for photos of Jimmy. She said to me, “You need to incorporate this into your eulogy.” So, I read the email about Jimmy’s commitment to his family during my eulogy at his funeral Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Jimmy’s words in that email were like he was giving his own eulogy. This is what he wrote.

Subject: Reflections-»Five seconds either way» Lex, J, and Izz, yesterday in the church Terry McBride gave the speech for the family as the eldest child. In his remarks he said “five seconds either way and Sheila would be alive and none of us would be in this church today.”

Those words resonated with me for two reasons.

One: it pays to be careful in everything we do, all the decisions we make have ramifications, and cars can kill people. Ask yourself before you act: is this decision putting me in harms way?

Two: life is random. There are no guarantees.

Sheila was simply on her way to a tee time in her golf cart in her own driveway. Five days later she was dead. Who knew when they saw her that morning it would be for the last time?

The lesson here, of course, is to love your family and friends with all the love you have every day, because we cannot control life’s randomness and there are no guarantees that things as we know them will last forever.

I tried my best to show that love to Mike yesterday, as well as his family.

This entire event had a very powerful emotional impact on me. I know Sheila would want me to pass along these thoughts to the ones I love more than anything in the world: you.

During Centennial Reunion Weekend, members of the Class of 1974 planted a red maple tree to the south of Sheehan House to honor their deceased classmates. Mike Buck ’74 sourced, transported, and installed the 800-lbs. granite base from Plattsburgh, NY, to New Milford.

1965 Read McNamara tells the PALLIUM he had a wonderful time renewing old friendships with classmates at his 50th reunion in June. “The celebration was just terrific,” he said. He added that his plans to retire have again been derailed, because he has been named Assistant Dean at Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management.

1998 Sean Lynch graduated as a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine in May 2015 from Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine. He is currently in his first year of residency in Cleveland, OH, practicing podiatric surgery.

2011 Chris Fernandez told guests at a CitySquash fundraiser of his journey to become the first in his family to graduate from college. Said Chris in his remarks, “CitySquash believed in my abilities and pushed me to work harder than I thought was possible.

They never saw the color of my skin, how much money my parents earned, or the neighborhood I was growing up in as barriers to my success. For this, more than anything else, I am eternally grateful.” Chris came to Canterbury through the CitySquash program and graduated from St. Lawrence University. Chris DeNunzio finished a successful water polo career at Washington and Jefferson College, He appeared in 30 contests in 2014, playing 830 minutes in goal and averaging 8.7 saves per game (262 total). He also posted an 11.3 goals against average as the Presidents advanced to their firstever Collegiate Water Polo Association Championship tournament. On June 6, 2015, Chris was named Capital One Academic All-American.

Steve Briggs ’54 Publishes Book Steve Briggs was a carefree youth who loved pleasure boats, pretty girls, and outrageous pranks. But the day came when he awoke to find his entire life capsized, his future beached on precarious shoals. Whereas once he was happy, prosperous, and healthy, now he was defeated, desperate, and doomed.

In his thirties, Steve had everything a successful businessman was supposed to have: a lovely wife, healthy children, a comfortable home, sea and snow vacations, and a promising career.

Then catastrophes struck, one after another. His company passed him over for promotion, His career hopes collapsed. His family fell apart. He was bordering on broke. To top it off, cancer invaded his body, promising just six months to live.

How he got into this terrible place and, more importantly, how he got out of it, are the subjects of his memoir, Navigating a Life. Only when he realized that he, and he alone, could turn his life around did the horizon begin to clear. He was the captain of his own life. He could navigate it or lose it.

Navigating a Life, is the intriguing account of Steve Briggs’s struggle against discouragement and defeat toward success and service to others.

Endowment Fund Established to Honor Rod Clarke ’46

R

ecently, Bob O’Connor ’76, Steve Reynolds ’78, and Larry Fisher ’77 established the Rod Clarke ’46 Endowment to Support Advanced Faculty Degrees to honor the life and career of Canterbury teacher, administrator, and Headmaster Rod Clarke.

During his long tenure, Rod encouraged faculty to obtain advanced degrees in their areas of discipline. He felt strongly that Canterbury should be an active partner in this endeavor and that it was the School’s responsibility to invest financially. In that spirit, these alumni believe the best way to celebrate Rod’s legacy is by creating an endowed fund with the core purpose of supporting advanced degrees for Canterbury faculty.

“Rod believed that Canterbury’s accomplished teachers and the unique classroom experiences they provide are the School’s most important assets,” said Bob. In recent years, the rapid increase in the cost of all graduate degree programs has created a real constraint for faculty and the School’s ability to meet this financial need.

This endowment, when fully funded, will provide financial support to several faculty members each year. It will also serve as a recruiting tool to help the School attract and retain the most talented educators.

At this launch stage, O’Connor, Reynolds, and Fisher have already secured pledges for more than 30% of their $500,000 goal.

“We invite other members of the Canterbury family to join us in taking this moment in the School’s history to support its faculty and pay tribute to our teacher, leader, and dear friend,” said Steve.

Wayne L. Owens ’77 Thomas J. Hughes ’05 Charles B. Reeves Jr. ’41 Charles B. Reeves Jr., a retired attorney and philanthropist recalled as a charming raconteur, died of congestive heart failure at Gilchrist Hospice Care. He was 92 and lived in Guilford, MD. Born in Baltimore, he was the son of Charles B. Reeves Sr. and Emily Fitzgerald Kenny. After graduating from Canterbury, Charles earned his bachelor’s degree at Princeton University, where he was on the staff of the Daily Princetonian. He was a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law. As a first lieutenant in the army, he was stationed in Japan, where he served in the field artillery and was a pilot.

He joined the firm of Cross & Shriver in 1951 and was an assistant attorney general from 1957 to 1959. In 1961, he joined what was then Venable, Baetjer and Howard and remained there until his retirement in 1993. He worked in trusts and estates and in securities law.

Charles served on the board and held the offices of secretary, president, and chairman of the James Lawrence Kernan Hospital near Dickeyville from 1959 to 1996. He was instrumental in establishing the hospital’s affiliation with the University of Maryland Medical System. Mr. Reeves also donated $1 million to the institution.

Charles was also a donor to the restoration of the Basilica of the Assumption. He funded the cleaning of three 19th-century paintings by Constantino Brumidi at St. Ignatius in Mount Vernon, where he also created an art gallery. In 2011, he gave much of the money for a $475,000 restoration of an 1860 pipe organ at St. Ignatius.

At his death, Charles was the longest-tenured resident of Guilford in North Baltimore, having resided in his parents' home for all but brief periods in his life.

Mr. Reeves wrote several volumes of memoirs. In his 1999 work, Carpe Diem, he advised, “Live your life so that whatever you lose, you are ahead.”

Survivors include three nephews and a niece. His brother, David Reeves ’44, predeceased him.

Charles S. Kipp Jr. ’45 Canterbury learned of the death of Charles S. Kipp Jr. ’45 from his son William. Charles was born on August 3, 1926 and died on September 7, 2014. He was a resident of Longmont, CO. While a student at Canterbury, Charles was captain of the football and basketball teams.

Wayne L. Owens ’77 Wayne L. Owens died on June 16, 2015. Born in Queens, NY, he was raised by Thomas and Marjorie Smith. At a young age, he enjoyed playing baseball, softball, basketball, football; performing on the stage, singing, and playing bass violin, bass guitar, and hand bells. Described by his Canterbury classmates as “Ken-Du,” many saw Wayne as larger than life.

Wayne’s family and children always came first.

He and his wife, Pamela, were co-founders of the largest African-American charter school in Palm Beach County. The school serves up to 850 students. His prior profession was in the financial industry at Janney Montgomery Scott, PaineWebber, Prudential, and Xerox Corp. He furthered his education with undergraduate and professional studies at Tufts, Harvard, and the University of Oxford.

His wife Pamela, daughter Samantha, sister Loren Fowlkes, mother Sharlene T. Brisco, and brothers Robert Wright, Timothy Brisco, and Keith Owens survive him.

Thomas J. Hughes ’05 Thomas J. Hughes ’05 died on May 28, 2015, in New York.

After graduating from Canterbury, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics at Northwestern University. Tom worked as an investment banker at Duff & Phelps, UBS, Citibank, and, most recently, Moelis & Co. He is described by family and friends as a popular and outgoing young man who had a great sense of humor. He enjoyed frequent vacations, played golf and squash, and was an expert skier.

While a student at Canterbury, Tom played Varsity Football and Varsity Lacrosse. He was also inducted into the Canterbury Honor Society. After he graduated, he served as a class agent.

His parents, Marypat and John Hughes ’72, two brothers, his grandmothers, and an aunt, Patricia Hughes Barnes ’76 survive him. He was predeceased by his aunt, Katherine Hughes Shelbourne ’80.

discovered Canterbury in the summer of 2004. At the time, Ben ’07 was struggling with his transition from middle school to Ridgefield High School. We learned that a large high school did not offer what Ben needed for personal growth and academic success.

I spoke with several schools, and as a family we visited just one: Canterbury. The unique setting and qualities of the School were immediately apparent. Ben and Alex ’08 both had tremendous experiences at Canterbury.

Ben went on to the University of Connecticut, earned a Civil Engineering degree, and is living the dream (his words) working and living in NYC. Alex went on to the University of Pittsburgh earning a degree in Economics. Alex went back to our family hometown of Chicago after graduating Pitt. He worked for a couple of years and is now back in graduate school earning an MS Accounting degree/CPA. He graduates in December 2015. To say they are doing well is an understatement, and I attribute much of their early life success to their years spent at Canterbury.

As I think about the charitable components of my estate plan, I want some of those dollars to go to educational programs.

Canterbury fits perfectly in my plan, so I am earmarking funds to establish financial assistance for families who couldn’t otherwise afford to send their child to the School.
