Each year, this annual report offers more than a record of philanthropy; it is a testament to what this community makes possible together. The 2024–25 year stands as a powerful example of that shared commitment, reflecting the generosity, vision, and care that have long defined life on our hilltop.
Though I arrived after this year had concluded, I quickly came to see the impact of your belief in Canterbury. Through your generosity, you sustained the daily work that shapes young people: engaged teaching, caring advising, and the quiet encouragement that builds confidence and character. You expanded opportunity through financial aid, ensuring that deserving students from near and far could call Canterbury home.
You also strengthened the programs and places that define a Canterbury education, from classrooms and labs to athletic fields and arts spaces alive with creativity and spirit. Your investment in professional development empowered our teachers to grow in their craft and bring new ideas and energy to their students. And your continued support of the endowment helped secure the School’s future, ensuring that Canterbury’s mission will continue to thrive for generations to come.

When Jack Elsas ’14 returns to campus, he notices how much has evolved—the Steers Center, the Academic Hub, even the cobblestone crosswalks across Aspetuck Avenue. But what stands out most to him isn’t what’s new. It’s what endures.
“You still see such a deep connection between all the students—that’s something unique to Canterbury,” Jack reflects. “Everyone grows together, on teams, in class, through activities. And on top of that, we had fantastic teachers and a very warm, welcoming environment where everyone can thrive in whatever path they chose.”
Jack has not only maintained but deepened those bonds over the past 11 years. As an active member of the alumni community, holding leadership positions in both the New York Regional Chapter and the Society of Alumni Executive Committee, he has come to understand just how far Canterbury’s reach extends. “It’s been so rewarding, not just professionally, but personally,” he says. “You realize how strong a connection you have to old friends and new because of Canterbury.”
Jack’s commitment to Canterbury extends beyond leadership. He also honors those friendships and formative experiences by giving back, becoming a regular donor to the Annual Fund just six months after his graduation.
The Annual Fund fuels everything that makes a Canterbury education extraordinary: rigorous academics, spirited competition, creative expression, service, and faith. Its flexible support keeps the School agile and forward-looking, providing the same foundation of opportunity and belonging that defined Jack’s own time on the hilltop.
”Canterbury was always a special place to me, so it was always important for me to find ways to be involved and give back,” he says. Jack connects his philanthropy to the Annual Fund to a concept he first learned as a student: a collective action problem. “Everybody assumes someone else will take action, so they don’t. With giving, you have to reverse that mindset: everyone has to do something. That’s when you create the best outcomes, and you can take pride in knowing you contributed to the growth and future of the School.”

Kim (Moffitt) ’90 and Sean Hehir P ‘26 have a powerful and long-standing connection to Canterbury that only became more meaningful when they were choosing the right school for their son, Andrew ‘26. At the time, the family was living in Honolulu, where Andrew attended one of the largest private schools in the country. As high school approached, the Hehirs knew they wanted a more intimate community with small classes, good college placement, strong athletics, and a reputation for nurturing and supporting students on a personal level.
“We spoke with a consultant who said they knew of a great school,” Kim says, “One that met all of our requirements, but that it was above all a very kind, close-knit community: a small school in Connecticut called Canterbury.”
Without realizing it, the consultant had recommended the very school that was already an important part of their lives. Kim and her siblings had attended Canterbury. The couple had been married in the Chapel of Our Lady, where they returned to baptize their son and hold a funeral for Kim’s father. “We’ve really experienced the full life cycle at Canterbury,” Sean reflects.
Not only did Canterbury provide everything the Hehirs were looking for—including a strong spiritual foundation—they were also impressed with the breadth of the School’s co-curricular programming.
“Another aspect of Canterbury that I love is that there are opportunities to try a lot of different things,” Kim says. “It’s a safe community where you can take risks, and if you fall, someone’s there to catch you. I think that whenever you can create opportunities for people that they wouldn’t necessarily have otherwise, it’s very rewarding, and Canterbury has always created these opportunities.”
When the Hehirs learned of the School’s plan to create the Academic Hub—a space comprising The Donovan Center for Learning, the Keefe Center for College Counseling, and the David C. Copley ’70 Library—they personally recognized the value of such an ambitious project.
“The Academic Hub became a philanthropic priority for us because the Donovan Center for Learning has been such a tremendous resource to our son,” says Sean. “Giving back isn’t optional; it’s something we all have a responsibility to do. You gain far more from helping others than from anything else.”

As students at Canterbury, Peter Kiernan ’71 and Joe O’Brien ’71 were the best of friends. But their bond began long before their time on the hilltop. Peter’s family was one of six to found St. Gregory’s School in Loudonville, New York, and Joe’s father was its first headmaster. When both boys later arrived at Canterbury, their friendship deepened into something lifelong.
“It takes a very, very long time to make an old friend,” Peter reflects. “It cannot be rushed. Growing up at Canterbury, every time I faced an issue, Joe was in my corner, and I would hope he would say the same of me. We were there for each other as boys, and we were there for each other as men.”
After graduation, their friendship endured across decades and milestones. Joe even collaborated with Peter in writing his second book, which went on to become a New York Times bestseller. But in April of last year, Peter learned that Joe was in the last stage of a prolonged illness. He rushed to his side, and the two had a meaningful final visit before Joe passed away the next day.
Peter remembers Joe not only as a dear friend but as a brilliant teacher and gifted writer who approached his craft from a unique perspective. “He firmly believed that good writing could be taught, and that it can show up anywhere,” he says. “In a science paper, a history paper, an art paper. You don’t need to be Ezra Pound or Herman Melville to write well. You can take anyone and teach them, in a partnership, how to be a great writer.”
And so, in that last conversation, Peter told his friend about a special project he was working on at Canterbury: the Joseph O’Brien ’71 Fund. “I told Joe that I intended to carry on his spirit,” he says. “This friendship is going to carry on with this endowment. So, this is far more than an award to me.”
With support from members of the Class of 1971, Peter endowed a prize to be given to both a Fifth Form student who shows exceptional promise in writing—from creative writing and poetry to science writing or history essays— and a faculty member from any academic discipline who nurtures that growth. Peter worked with the Advancement team to ensure that the endowment would reflect Joe’s philosophy: that great writing is born through mentorship, persistence, and shared effort.
The endowment honors not only Joe’s legacy but also the enduring relationship between student and teacher that defines Canterbury. “I applaud the School for letting me craft this endowment; they listened to me describe the idea in its completeness,” Peter says. “There’s no gift I’ve made that means more to me than this one. I promise I’m getting more out of it than Canterbury.”
