Spring has arrived in Steveston Village! The streets are bustling with activity as locals and visitors are enjoying the warmer weather. In early April, the Cherry Blossom Festival at Garry Point Park enchanted all who attended and took selfies among the pink petals.

Fisherman’s Wharf remains a hotspot for fresh seafood enthusiasts, with fishing boats selling their catch of the day straight from our local waters. Meanwhile, our village's charming shops, diverse restaurants, and picturesque scenery continue to make it a favourite destination for travellers and day-trippers alike.

We are preparing to welcome tour operators participating in the Tourism Neighbourhood Challenge, who will explore the village from April 15 to May 31.

As May approaches, we look forward to celebrating Mother’s Day and the annual plant sale at London Heritage Farm. In addition, the Steveston Farmers and Artisans Market opens on May 5. Whether you’re looking for locally grown produce, fresh baked goods, or handmade items, the market is always a great place to shop and meet friends.

Plans for the Steveston Salmon Festival are well underway, coinciding with the construction progress of our new community centre.

In this issue, we feature Doctors Jolene Sun and Mark Aginsky, co-owners of Vision Plus Optometrists. Their clinic has set the standard for personalized eye care for over a decade, boasting state-of-the-art equipment and a commitment to excellence.

Mark your calendars for the Steveston Spot Prawn and Seafood Celebration from mid-May to June 18. This event promises fresh-off-the-boat seafood sales, cooking demonstrations, family-friendly activities, and the eagerly anticipated Dine About—a citywide restaurant promotion highlighting delectable seafood dishes.

VISION PLUS OPTOMETRISTS: Eyecare at its Best

Vision Plus in Steveston first opened its doors 12 years ago as a unique model of eyecare, one owned and operated by Doctors Jolene Sun and Mark Aginsky. While most eyecare clinics are owned by large conglomerate companies, this independently owned clinic provides personalized vision care using state-of-the-art, cutting-edge equipment. Its patients represent a wide spectrum of ages and optical needs, from infants through to octogenarians.

Dr. Sun began working in the clinic as a locum back in 2015, and quickly fell for Steveston’s unique warmth and sense of community. “I felt right at home in this little town, where you can walk down the street and wave to people you know,” she said. She came on board as a co-owner of Vision Plus in Steveston in 2016 and her optometric skill and warm personality have made her a popular, well-known practitioner in the community.

Vision is a crucial element of overall health, but many new parents are unaware that their

child’s first eye exam should happen as early as one year of age. Eye exams for babies are different than for other age groups, as there’s no reading off an eye chart for a child of that age. Nonetheless, optometrists are able to look inside the eye, examine for disease and deliver highly accurate readings of a child’s vision.

Vision Plus in Steveston is also a resource for residents at The Maples and Wisteria, where Dr. Sun conducts presentations on eye health.

A clinic that embraces the latest high technology, one of its key pieces of equipment is the Optos retinal scanner. It allows doctors a 200-degree view into the back of the eye, enabling detection of diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal tears and detachments, as well as other healthrelated problems like diabetes and high blood pressure. Undetected, many of these problems can progress quickly and without evidence of symptoms until treatment may be too late to be viable.

“Using the latest in medical technology allows us to make a difference that can change the quality and trajectory of our patients’ lives,” Dr. Sun said. “There have been cases when we’ve detected cancers, tumours and even an aneurysm. But by timely detection and connecting patients to the right medical professionals, we’ve helped save lives that might otherwise have fallen through the cracks. As a doctor, that’s the ultimate reward.”

An integral part of the community, Vision Plus in Steveston is a strong believer in giving back. “It was important to us to donate to Steveston Sound and Stage’s fundraiser to assist Super Grocer after the devastating fire earlier this year,” Dr Sun said. “We love supporting our local high schools’ dry grads with donations and participating in Steveston Merchant Association-run events such as Girls’ Night Out and Trick-or-Treating in Steveston Village.”

Dr. Sun’s medical team is reinforced by two associate doctors. Dr. Eugene Wong has been

seeing patients at Vision Plus for the past five years. Fluent in Cantonese and English, he performs routine eye exams, ocular disease diagnosis and treatment, co-management of refractive surgeries and contact lens fittings. Dr. Alison She joined the clinic two years ago after completing a residency in primary care and refractive surgery co-management. The Vision Plus team includes opticians Bindi and Inga and assistants Minnie and Carissa.

Vision Plus carries over 1,000 frames ranging from budget-friendly brands to European fashion, as well as contact lenses. Flex Eyewear frames, which are colourful, hinge-free and extremely durable, are particularly attractive to children, while other designs from Barcelona and Denmark are popular among adults.

Understanding Myopia with Dr. Jolene Sun

Myopia (or near-sightedness) is a common vision condition wherein close-up objects are seen clearly, but objects further away are blurry. It worsens with increased screen time and if left unmanaged, can increase the risk of eye diseases like cataracts, glaucoma, retinal detachment and myopic maculopathy. The earlier the intervention, the better.

While traditional glasses and contact lenses can correct myopia and allow your child to see clearly, they do not help slow its progression. At the initial consultation, we establish the optimal myopia treatment and schedule the necessary follow-up appointments to slow down the progression.

Vision Plus uses gold-standard advanced equipment to develop a personalized treatment plan. Non-invasive myopia treatments include customized spectacle lenses, specialty soft contact lenses, orthokeratology lenses, or prescription eye drops.

Once an established treatment plan has been

determined, your prescription has stabilized and the myopia progression has been effectively reduced, we continue to monitor every six months.

Since the pandemic, children have spent much more time focussing on up-close objects such as technology. Encourage your kids to spend more time outdoors to help prevent digital eye strain and aim for two hours outdoors daily. Also, to reduce eye strain caused by screen time, look up from your screen every 20 minutes and focus on something 20 feet away. Focusing on an item in the distance allows eye muscles to relax.

Complete eye exams are fully covered for children 18 years and under, and partial coverage is available through MSP for seniors 65 years and older. Ideally, eyes should be tested once a year between ages 19 to 64. Most insurance providers are billed directly, see in office for details.

So there you have it, 40 years as a Realtor is now in the books! I started in this business back in April 1984, at a time when we filled out all of our contracts by hand and phones still had a cord attached!

I grew up in Steveston and consider myself fortunate to still call this unique and charming place my home. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with many wonderful people, and I am forever grateful for their confidence in referring me to their family and friends.

Third Annual Event Drops Anchor

Spot prawns are like rock stars of the sea; people eagerly await their arrival and line up to purchase the sweet crustaceans during the brief harvesting season.

“Locals and visitors are licking their lips in anticipation for the return of the Steveston Spot Prawn & Seafood Celebration,” says Ceri Chong, Tourism Richmond’s Director of Destination and Industry Development.

From May 16 to June 18*, the Steveston Spot Prawn & Seafood Celebration offers freshoff-the-boat sales of spot prawns and more, a cooking demonstration, family-friendly activities, and Dine About, a delicious seafoodfocused citywide restaurant promotion.

Tourism Richmond has partnered with the Steveston Harbour Authority for the past three years to highlight the abundance of seafood local fishers sell at Fisherman’s Wharf.

“This event is another reason to come to Steveston Village and stay a little longer.”

“It’s a great chance to chat with friendly fishers, check out lots of additional catch-of-the-day seafood and soak up the authentic heritage atmosphere of Steveston Village. The historic home of Canada’s largest commercial small vessel fishing fleet, Steveston has long been the heart and soul of B.C.’s seafood sector.”

“For most visitors, the spot prawn delicacies will be one of the biggest hooks. Before leaving the wharf, pick up a bag of the freshest and sweetest-tasting spot prawns you’re ever likely to try. They’ll only be available here as long as supplies last.”

Local fisher Justin Taylor is the founder and

owner of Steveston Spot Prawns (not to be confused with the event’s name). His boat and numerous other fishers will head out to sea to satisfy the demand for the highly sought-after spot prawns and other seafood delicacies.

“Our motto is the livelier they are, the fresher they are, and the better they’ll taste!”

Most Steveston fishing vessels have fishing grounds ranging from the Gulf Islands to the Sunshine Coast and into Howe Sound, typically two to three hours of travel time away.

“Live wild-caught B.C. spot prawns will arrive daily from our fishing boat. We anticipate the season will open on May 15, so the first live prawns will be available for sale on May 16, but in very limited quantities after the shortened first day of setting gear. A full day's catch will be available on May 17 and every day after until the season ends which is typically a 30-to-40day season. Catches could be limited on certain days due to stormy weather conditions or fishing vessel breakdowns,” Justin says.

“Compared to most prawns, the spot prawn is much firmer and crisper in texture, sweeter in taste and has a clean, cold ocean taste that separates it from all the rest.”

“When it comes to seafood, nothing beats a live product, and the shortest period from that seafood’s natural environment to the dinner table, the purer and more robust it will taste. So, ensure the spot prawns are alive and healthy looking, preferably snapping and jumping in your bag or cooler with a translucent shell colour. If you are unsure, you can see their gills moving and pulsing through the shell at the side of their head.”

Once purchased, keep them as cold and dry as possible. Do not add water or ice to your bag of prawns. Without aeration in water, the prawns can die (drown) in the water and may result in the meat being less firm when cooked. For best results, place your bag of live prawns in a cooler or cooler bag on top of a towel with ice or an ice pack below the towel. Leave the bag open so the prawns can breathe fresh air.

On June 8, a Culinary Stage will be at Fisherman’s Wharf. Local chefs will demonstrate spot prawn and seafood recipes so buyers can purchase and prepare their own dishes at home. Chefs from Blue Canoe Waterfront Restaurant and Steveston Seafood House among others, will perform demonstrations.

Ceri says, “The Dine About promotion in June is a great way to enjoy local seafood and spot prawns. Seafood purchased from Steveston fishers will be featured in dishes, drawing diners to Steveston and Richmond restaurants.” Some of the participating restaurants include Blue Canoe Waterfront Restaurant, Bruno at Versante Hotel, Globe at YVR Fairmont Vancouver Airport and Little Mexico Cantina.

In addition, family-friendly activities are planned for June 8 outside The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site.

Be sure to reserve June 8 and mark your calendar for mid-May when local fishers arrive at Fisherman’s Wharf with the first spot prawns of the season! The Dine About promotion takes place from June 1 to 16.
