October is one of those months when Steveston begins to shift gears. Summer is behind us, fall is underway, and the calendar starts filling with events that will take us right through the holiday season.

October brings the annual Scarecrow Crawl, Thanksgiving and Halloween trick-or-treating.

November follows with Girls’ Night Out and the start of Winter in the Village, including the tree lighting in front of the Steveston Tram, Santa’s arrival by boat, horse-drawn carriage rides, the Christmas dog parade and dog photos with Santa.

This issue arrives just ahead of Richmond’s October 17 municipal election. On our cover are Andy Hobbs and Dr. Mike Gill, candidates for Richmond City Council. Throughout this issue, you’ll find advertising and information from other local candidates, giving readers an opportunity to learn more about some of the people seeking your vote.

As Richmond prepares to elect a new mayor, we say goodbye to Mayor Malcolm Brodie after 25 years leading our city. Thank you, Mayor Brodie, for your many years of public service and commitment to Richmond. We wish you all the best in your retirement.

We are pleased to introduce readers to Snack Corner, one of Steveston’s newest businesses.

Rodriguez turned a shared idea into a familyrun restaurant at Moncton Street and No. 1 Road, where they serve burgers, hand-cut fries, poutine and a touch of their Mexican heritage.

Their story is one of friendship, family and finding a welcoming place in the Steveston community.

There are changes coming to Second Avenue.

The building at 12220 Second Avenue has been sold, and its tenants are moving out, including B&P Ice-Cream, Steveston European Food Market, RH Skin Wellness, Beauty Within and Kim’s Electronics. Steveston European Food Market will be moving to the current Balloon Place location on First Avenue, while Balloon Place will move next door within the same building. Stay tuned for updates on where the remaining businesses will be relocating.

We’re pleased to welcome the new owners of Steveston’s Best of British and Steveston Sweet Shoppe to the local business community.

As we move through fall and toward the holiday season, there will be plenty happening around Steveston. It’s a great time to visit familiar favourites, check out some of the newer businesses and take part in the events that bring the community together at this time of year.

ANDY HOBBS & MIKE GILL: A Shared Commitment to Richmond Story by Sarah Gordon | Photos by Sandra Steier Andy Hobbs and Dr. Mike Gill share a lifelong connection to Richmond that goes beyond politics. Both have deep roots in the community and years of experience giving back through their professional and volunteer work.

Hobbs, an incumbent Richmond city councillor seeking re-election, and Gill are running together with the Richmond United Voters Association, or Richmond United, in the October 17, 2026, Richmond municipal election. Their campaign focuses on building a safe, inclusive and forward-looking city where families can find housing, local businesses can thrive and residents feel represented at City Hall.

Hobbs is a retired Vancouver Police Department superintendent with over 35 years of service, including a year as Transit Police Chief. Public safety and security have always been priorities; he recognizes that the peace, prosperity, and stability we enjoy as Canadians require vigilance.

His community involvement has included the Richmond Kigoos Swim Club, the Steveston Salmon Festival, the Richmond Hospital Foundation and the Richmond Intercultural Advisory Committee. He also served two terms as a Richmond School Board trustee and, before joining city council, chaired the Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site Society and served on the boards of Tourism Richmond and the Fraser Marine Rescue Society.

“Service is ingrained in me.

It’s what I do. It’s what I have always done,” Hobbs says.

Gill's path into community service has taken a different route. He is an optometrist and smallbusiness owner, vice-president of Richmond Raiders Minor Football and a volunteer coach.

Through youth sports, he has seen how athletics can bring people together.

“When we invest in kids, we invest in confidence, teamwork, friendships, and a strong community,” Gill says.

Their shared connection to Richmond is also reflected in the way they talk about the city's future. Both remember growing up with access to parks, recreation facilities and community centres, and they want future generations to have similar opportunities. For Hobbs and Gill, that means thinking about Richmond as a whole: how public safety, housing, recreation, businesses, the arts, and the environment all contribute to a community where people can build their lives.

Public safety remains an important part of that vision. Hobbs says Richmond needs to continue supporting police, firefighters, emergency personnel, search and rescue teams and volunteer services. He also points to the city's dike system and continued investment in flood protection as important to Richmond's long-term resilience, particularly as the city faces the effects of climate change.

Road safety is another top priority. Hobbs says partnerships with organizations such as ICBC, City Engineering, the Richmond School District, Richmond Fire-Rescue and the RCMP are important relationships and funding sources to improve efficiency and safety, particularly with traffic patterns, and high collision intersections. Measures such as lower speed limits in residential areas are intended to make streets safer for pedestrians, while roadsafety programs can help electric scooters, bicycles and motor vehicles more safely share the roads.

“We have to continue to work hard with community safety partners,” Hobbs says, pointing to the recent tragic sinking of a chartered fishing boat off Roberts Bank as an example where multiple agencies including the Canadian Coast Guard, the RCMP and the volunteer Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue worked together under very challenging circumstances.

Crime is also an issue the candidates want to address. Hobbs points to shoplifting and property crime as concerns for local businesses, October 1 - November 15, 2026

noting that losses can ultimately contribute to higher costs for consumers and even cause businesses to close up shop. He says Richmond RCMP efforts to target property and violent offenders are important, along with ensuring police have adequate resources. The Richmond RCMP’s continued participation with the integrated teams like IHIT, collision investigation, emergency response (ERT) are also crucial for community safety.

Hobbs and Gill support involuntary care and treatment for people experiencing mental illness, addiction, or other complex issues who are unable to care for themselves or seek treatment voluntarily and may pose a danger to themselves or others.

“It is not kind to leave people on the street who cannot care for themselves,” Hobbs says.

Housing remains another major concern.

Hobbs says Richmond needs a range of housing options, including affordable rental housing, homes for families and independent and assisted living for seniors. He is particularly concerned about affordability for young people and says the city needs to make its buildingapproval processes and policies as efficient as possible.

Rather than focusing only on smaller units, he says the city should encourage housing where families can stay and grow over many years.

“We need to build family friendly housing where families can live for 25 or 50 years. This means, for example, three or four bedrooms rather than one-bedroom suites.”

A livable Richmond also needs recreation opportunities that keep pace with population growth and Hobbs believes city council needs to plan strategically for the future. “As a kid and as a young parent, I always found Richmond’s facilities to be ahead of other communities, but other communities have closed the gap,” says Hobbs.

“Recreation, sports and arts facilities are cornerstones for thriving, family friendly and liveable communities,” say Hobbs and Gill.

They see recreation, parks and arts planning as a long-term investment.

“Park and recreation equity and the arts are not just a quick fix,” Gill says. “We need a strategic outlook that meets our needs for the next 30 years.”

A vibrant community also depends on strong local businesses and a healthy economy, the candidates say. Richmond's proximity to Vancouver, Surrey and Vancouver International Airport gives the city an economic advantage, while a strong economy provides jobs and supports other areas of community life. Gill's experience with youth sports has also shown him how community events can benefit restaurants, food trucks and other small businesses.

Agriculture is another important part of Richmond's identity. The city combines a highly urban environment with agricultural land, including areas within the provincial Agricultural Land Reserve. Hobbs says Richmond must continue working with farmers to find ways to keep both small- and large-scale agricultural operations viable.

“We will find as many ways as we can to work with farmers to make things viable,” he says.

“We will listen to the farmers within our city.”

Financial management is part of that larger picture. Hobbs points to Richmond's financial

management record and says keeping tax increases as low as possible requires careful decisions during the budget process. He says council needs to weigh projects and services against other community needs while maintaining a long-term financial strategy.

For Hobbs and Gill, the challenge is finding the right balance as Richmond grows.

That means enhancing what works while preparing for what comes next, from housing for families and seniors, to parks and recreation opportunities, the arts, support for local businesses and farmers, public safety and protection from flooding and overall environmental sustainability.

Both are also looking forward to projects already underway, including the West Richmond Pavilion and the opening of the new Steveston Community Centre and Library later this year. For them, these projects are part of a larger vision for a city that continues to grow while remaining safe, livable and welcoming.

At the centre of their campaign is the belief that Richmond's future should be shaped by the people who live here, including longtime residents, newcomers, business owners, students and families, and that listening to those different perspectives is essential.

“Continuing to have a growing community that attracts people to Richmond is key,” Hobbs says. “This is your Richmond and your voice matters. Richmond United is here to listen, to lead, and to stand united with you.”

SNACK CORNER:

Built on Friendship and Family Story by Sarah Gordon | Photos by Carolynne Palla What began as a friendship between two mothers has grown into Snack Corner, one of Steveston’s newest businesses.

Karina Zaragoza and Marcela Rodriguez first met through their daughters, who attended elementary school together. Their daughters insisted they meet because they are both from Mexico. It was an instant connection, one that soon grew into a close friendship between Karina and Marcela, as well as between their families.

Over time, their families have become like one.

They celebrate holidays such as Thanksgiving together and their children have grown up side by side. Along the way, the idea of starting a business together, “a crazy idea,” as Marcela puts it, began to take shape.

Both women had spent many years raising their children, who are still in school but are growing up quickly. They began thinking about what they might do next, something 14

of their own that they could eventually share with their children.

“We want to offer them something where they can work and learn from us,” Marcela says.

Karina lives in the area, and when she spotted the vacant storefront at the gateway to Steveston Village, she knew they had found the ideal spot.

On June 1, 2026, that idea became a reality when Snack Corner opened at the corner of Moncton Street and No. 1 Road. The cozy shop occupies the longtime former home of Laara’s Vacuums. The change has occasionally caught some people by surprise.

“More than one customer has come in looking for a vacuum and ended up staying for a meal!” Karina says with a laugh.

However, getting to opening day was far from easy. The heritage building required extensive work to transform it into a restaurant. Karina, Marcela and their families tackled as much of the renovation as they could. The project began in June 2025 and involved everything from breaking concrete for the installation of a grease trap to painting the building’s interior and exterior.

Although it was a long, drawn-out process, the friends say, “We enjoyed every stage. We had the advantage of time to get things done.”

Marcela laughs when she recalls how people would stop them outside to ask if they could hire them as painters. She jokes, “We know we always have another career if we need it!” They also laugh when they recall carting off heavy rocks in their cars.

That hands-on approach reflects the spirit behind Snack Corner. The business was created by two families coming together, with their daughters now lending a hand and working at the front counter. Karina and Marcela are also extremely grateful for the support of their husbands throughout the project.

The response from the community has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.

Karina says, “Steveston is like a big family.

Everyone knows each other. We feel at home here. Our customers are super kind. They know our names and say hi. Some will even pop in as they pass by just to say hello.”

The location has quickly become a convenient stop for the neighbourhood. Families have spotted Snack Corner from Steveston Park, making it an easy place to pick up food. High school students have discovered it as a lunch and after-school spot, while seniors have begun making it a regular hangout, with the hand-cut fries and poutine proving especially popular.

Students find the prices very affordable, and some customers are already coming in three or four times a week. Karina reports that a former restaurant owner has become a regular. “She loves our burgers and fries. We know we are doing something right.”

For Karina and Marcela, Snack Corner is about more than simply serving food. They enjoy interacting with customers and creating a welcoming place through conversation, laughter and learning people’s names. Even hugs are available, and they come for free.

“Customer service is part of our culture,” says Karina.

The pair are grateful for the many people who have supported and helped them along the way, including a family member who has taken on the role of mentor. With a background in the food industry, he is involved in everything from developing the menu and handling the graphic design to advising them on all aspects of running the business and continues to guide them along the way.

Customers have been quick to lend their support and words of encouragement. They are spreading the word and telling the business partners that Snack Corner will succeed, and that it is needed in the community. Marcela says with gratitude, “Angels are everywhere.”

They are also hearing feedback about how great the place looks and smells. Cheerful, beachy colours give Snack Corner the feeling of a seaside getaway, adding to its casual and welcoming atmosphere. And, of course, there is the food.

The menu includes seven types of chicken burgers, poutine (including a Mexican version called Salchi Pulpos), hand-cut fries, chicken tenders, chicken wraps and Caesar salad.

The mouthwatering dessert menu features a Mexican specialty: Choco Bananas. Frozen bananas are dipped in chocolate and finished with a choice of four sprinkle toppings.

Customers love taking photos with the colourful treats.

“Without his knowledge, this would not have been possible. We are extremely grateful for his kindness,” says Karina.

Above all, Karina and Marcela are deeply appreciative of the warm reception they have received. “The community has welcomed us.

They wish us all the best. That means a lot.

What makes a great community is the people,” says Karina.

For two friends who came together with a “crazy idea,” Snack Corner has become much more than a business. It has brought their families together in a new way and given Karina and Marcela a place to share their love of food, community and Mexican hospitality.

Looking ahead to the cooler months, the pair are busy dreaming up new menu additions, including tortilla soup and Mexican hot chocolate. Hot dogs, beef burgers and Taco Tuesdays will also be coming soon.

Alexa Loo Sets Her Sights on Richmond’s Mayor’s Chair Story and photos submitted

After more than a decade around the council table, Richmond City Councillor Alexa Loo is stepping forward this fall to run for mayor in the October 17 civic election.

First elected in 2014 and currently serving her third term, Loo brings extensive experience in community safety, finance, transit, and regional infrastructure. But Richmond is more than a jurisdiction for Loo; it is home. She grew up here, earned her Bachelor of Commerce from UBC, and built a professional foundation as a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA), bringing sharp financial discipline to municipal budget debates.

Before public office, Loo represented Canada at both the 2006 Torino and 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games as a seven-time national alpine snowboard champion, earning multiple World Cup podiums. Today, she is raising two sons in the same community where she grew up, staying closely involved with youth athletics through more than a decade of work with KidSport Richmond.

For Loo, Steveston holds a deeply personal place. During her Olympic training, the community rallied behind her through local fundraisers, a generosity she has never forgotten. That connection comes full circle today: having grown up swimming with a local Richmond swim club, she championed expanding pool hours on council so more families could access lane time. Now, watching her two sons train with that same club, she sees daily why local neighbourhood spaces matter.

Her mayoral platform focuses on four actionable priorities: Cultural Harmony and Accessibility: Richmond is one of Canada’s most diverse cities. To ensure every resident feels included, Loo will introduce live AI translation and transcription services at City Hall and community centres, enabling residents to follow council debates, ask questions, and engage in civic decisions without language barriers.

Safer Neighbourhoods and Youth Hope: Loo stands firmly for street-level security, clean parks, and thriving family businesses.
