Publisher's Note It’s cause for celebration -- Steveston Insider is 10 years old! To honour this milestone the Steveston Insider creative team came out from behind the scenes and took to the water for an anniversary photo shoot, after all, what better place to celebrate our waterfront community? On a gorgeous September afternoon we boarded the Forager, a beautiful vessel, and toasted our beloved village. It all began 10 years ago with my first venture; a magazine you may remember called Steveston Kids. In 2010 that publication “grew up” and shifted direction to become Steveston Insider, which celebrates the unique businesses, personalities and events that contribute to Steveston’s small town charm. Steveston Insider’s photographer Sandra Steier and writer/editor Sarah Gordon joined me early on and we frequently thank our lucky stars for such seamless teamwork.

We regularly receive comments from readers who look forward to each issue where they discover the inside scoop on our local businesses, which are the backbone of our community. Through the years we’ve heard stories of business owners’ hopes, dreams and investment in this location. They describe Steveston as much more than a place to open up shop, it’s a place they fall in love with and more often than not, they also live locally. We thank all of these hardworking independent business owners for their contribution to making Steveston special. I mirror their feelings. As a Stevestonite I take great pride in giving back to my community through sponsorships, supporting many local events and volunteering with the Steveston Merchants Association and other organizations. Many changes have taken place in Steveston

over the last ten years. We’ve seen development as some buildings have been demolished and new ones have sprung up. We’ve witnessed some businesses close while others have opened and begun their journey. We saw the Steveston Merchants Association form in 2010 and bring us some of Steveston’s best-loved events including Trick or Treating in Steveston Village, Girls’ Night Out and Christmas in Steveston Village. The dedicated volunteer board is always hard at work representing the best interests of its members. We’ve watched our little village receive international attention as film crews have transformed it into magical locations like Storybrooke, Maine. We’ve seen it become a full out war zone (remember when army tanks rolled along Moncton Street for the film Godzilla?) and watched Power Ranger superheroes run through the streets. In this anniversary issue we feature two relatively new businesses: the one-year-old Urban Jamaica restaurant, and Browcasso

Micropigmentation, which opened two years ago. Both businesses are perfect examples of owners who love Steveston and were determined to situate their storefronts here. Our third story showcases O’Hare’s GastroPub, which is celebrating an impressive 30th anniversary this month. Browcasso Micropigmentation: Steveston’s Cosmetic Tattoo Specialist Story by Sarah Gordon

Calais Morimoto is a homegrown Stevestonite with an exotic name that originates from the port city of Calais, France. Prior to her birth, her grandmother and aunt were vacationing in France and phoned home to check in. Her mother instantly took a shining to the city’s name and thought it was perfect for her soon to be born baby. Calais is the owner of Browcasso Micropigmentation on First Avenue, which opened two years ago. She comes from a family of local entrepreneurs. Her aunt and uncle own Steveston Seabreeze Adventures, her mother founded Damn Good Soap and her brother is a fisherman. In the 1980s her grandmother ran a children’s clothing boutique called Sunbeams, which was located in the same storefront where Browcasso now resides. Her parents discovered the storefront was for lease while Calais was in Toronto training to become a certified micropigmentation specialist. They thought it would be an ideal space for their daughter to open her own studio. It seemed like it was meant to be, however there was a hitch, other tenants also

wanted it, but fate worked its magic and she secured the shop. Today, Calais feels a sense of pride and connection when she steps inside Browcasso knowing that her grandmother worked in the same location. In January 2015 renovations began. The space was transformed into a beautiful bright and open treatment room with a reception area divided by a partially frosted glass wall allowing plenty of light to flow through. Calais credits her mother, Paula Morimoto, for her exceptional taste and flair for design. The choices of gray laminate flooring and white walls with pale gray moulding are complemented by geometric wallpaper, mirrors, and elegant light fixtures create a relaxing environment appropriate for this waterfront village.
Browcasso offers microblading, eyeliner tattoo, eyelash extensions and lash lifts. All of Browcasso’s services focus on aesthetically framing and enhancing their clients’ overall appearance. Perfectly arched,

face-framing eyebrows are achieved through three methods: microblading (Browcasso’s most popular service), in addition to eyebrow shading and hair strokes. Calais points out, “Microblading is the finest form of tattooing and has the most natural look and outcome.” This semi-permanent tattoo process uses tiny needles that make up a small blade to deposit pigment under your skin. Other services include eyeliner tattoos to accentuate your eyes, lash lifts and eyelash extensions lengthen your lashes. How did Calais get interested in this profession? She explains, “While I was in high school I frequently over plucked my eyebrows and tried every shape imaginable. My mom warned me that my eyebrows would not grow back but I didn’t listen.” She laughs and says, “They didn’t grow back. I only had about 20 hairs left.”
Searching for a solution for her over plucked eyebrows, Calais discovered microblading. Calais has always had an artistic streak. “Since I was a little girl I always gravitated to drawing and the arts. A big part of my work entails drawing so it’s a natural evolution of my creative side to be able to incorporate art into my daily work,” she says. For a peek at Calais’ work visit Browcasso’s
Instagram and Facebook pages for before and after shots. She can take people with sparse eyebrows to a beautiful full and natural look. Customers range from 18 to 85 years old. Although Browcasso’s clients are generally women the service isn’t only for females. In addition to brows that need filling, microblading also does wonders for people who have alopecia, eyebrow scars or have gone through chemotherapy. Customer’s reactions are by far the most satisfying part of her work. Calais says, with a smile, “To able to bring something back that they once had makes me feel very happy. It’s heart warming.”
Colours are custom blended for each client to provide a natural look. Calais mentions, “I work in an industry that is constantly evolving, therefore I believe in continuing my education by taking courses in Toronto on an ongoing basis, which in turn benefits my clients.”

Her best friend, Taylor Ross does eyelash extensions, her cousin Brianne Sameshima also does eyelash extensions and her mother works at the reception desk and does lash lifts. Based in the village where she has lived her entire life, with her friends and family surrounding her, Calais is a Stevestonite through and through. She recently bought her first home and hopes that one day she will raise a family of her own here. Calais is also an advocate of supporting small businesses. “I strongly believe in choosing to support

Competition for condominiums and townhomes pushed Metro Vancouver home sales above typical levels in August by 19.6 per cent.
As detached home prices continue to climb, homes priced between $350,000 and $750,000 have been subject to intense competition and multiple offers across the region as more buyers are competing for more affordable housing. For all property types, the average sales-to-active listings ratio for August 2017 is 34.6 per cent. By property type, the ratio is 16.3 per cent for detached homes, 44.8 per cent for townhomes, and 76.3 per cent for condominiums, which reflects more people competing to buy the relatively more affordable housing types. Urban Jamaica: The Warmth of Jamaica in Steveston Village Story by Sarah Gordon

The turquoise Caribbean Sea, white sandy beaches and the cheerful rhythm of steel drums and Reggae music are all images and sounds that lure people to Jamaica. When visiting the island, they fall in love with the friendly people and the flavourful cuisine.
Canadian born Conrad has Jamaican roots; his parents immigrated to Canada from Port Maria, Jamaica. Lee is originally from Vietnam and moved to Canada when she was a child. The couple met in Surrey and married in 2010; they have three boys under the age of eight.
Take away the tropical setting and drop in the cry of seagulls, the smell of West Coast ocean air, the backdrop of fishing boats and add in Urban Jamaica restaurant in Steveston Village. Whether you have visited Jamaica and are craving a Jamaican meal, or you have never been but wish to experience the home cooked flavours first hand, Urban Jamaica is the place to go.
Lee mentions that her sister owns Xyclo Vietnamese restaurant on Moncton Street and that is how she was introduced to Steveston. She fell in love with the community and suggested to Conrad that they open a Jamaican restaurant in the historic village.

Extensive renovations took place to convert the former business into the restaurant of their dreams. The attractive space is painted chocolate brown with cream wainscoting and features a tin ceiling and a slate tiled wall surrounding a gas fireplace. A painting of Bob Marley is mounted on a wall and above the newly installed bar a big screen TV is set to a tranquil beach scene unless a sporting event takes precedence. The Pearts are not strangers to the restaurant industry. For many years Conrad’s mother Sharon Peart owned the extremely popular Tastes Nice Caribbean restaurant in Surrey and this is where Conrad got his start. Much to her customers’ disappointment, Sharon sold the business four years ago. Fortunately, Conrad and Lee persuaded her to come out of retirement and she is an integral member of Urban Jamaica. Sharon and Lee can be found in the kitchen preparing authentic home cooked cuisine while Conrad manages the business in addition to welcoming guests and serving.

Commenting on the talented family trio Conrad says, “We have the right package.” Bartender Jordan Berry recently joined the family business. He initially came as a guest with his mother on Mother’s Day and is thrilled to be part of team. His charm and bartending talent adds to the overall experience.
“We want our guests to feel at home.” Lee Peart There is a demand for Urban Jamaica as there aren’t many Jamaican restaurants in Metro Vancouver. Former customers have discovered the Steveston restaurant and travel from Surrey, White Rock and Langley to taste the dishes that they loved when Sharon owned her former business. Locals have supported Urban Jamaica since it opened. Word of mouth started to spread and the restaurant has steadily built clientele. Conrad says with gratitude, “It’s the locals that get our name around.”

The menu honours some of the country’s bestknown dishes including goat curry, chicken curry and a delicious oxtail stew. Conrad says, “Jerk chicken is a good rookie dish.” The chicken, beef and vegetarian Jamaican patties are made from scratch daily and sell out quickly. For the adventurous, they suggest trying ackee and saltfish (cod), which is Jamaica’s national dish. Every dish is made to order with an emphasis on quality. Sharon has extremely high standards in the kitchen. For example, she only uses Halal meat. Conrad says, “It is grass fed and tastes so much better.”
“We put a lot of heart into the food we serve.” Conrad Peart The bar serves speciality drinks to accompany the meals. The homemade ginger beer is superb. Forget the tinned versions you have tasted, they simply don’t compare. Another popular drink is the Smokey Caesar, which is a visual delight to see prepared as it is set alight to create the smokey taste. Conrad says, “People love it. It’s different and not traditional.”

Close your eyes as you listen to the steel drums and savour the tastes; you may forget you are 5,000 km from Jamaica.

O'Hare's GastroPub:
Thirty Years of Purveying Good Times Story by Sarah Gordon

Look up as you enter O’Hare’s GastroPub and you will see a sign in Gaelic that reads “Céad Míle Fáilte,” which translates to “one hundred thousand welcomes.” It is difficult to estimate how many people have passed through the door since O’Hare’s opened for business 30 years ago, but it is safe to say that warm welcomes have been plentiful. Jack O’Hare is the patriarch of Steveston’s well-loved pub. Originally from Warrenpoint, Northern Ireland, he left his homeland in 1967 and moved to Canada where he worked his way up with CP Hotels. In 1987 he and his wife Jane became “purveyors of good times” when they opened O’Hare’s, fulfilling Jack’s lifelong dream of owning a pub. Jack retired seven years ago. Continuing in her father’s footsteps, his daughter Erinn Bryan and her husband Grant Bryan operate the family business while Jack and Jane enjoy their well-earned retirement. Jack pops in three to four times a week and has a beer on Friday nights. Erinn jokes, “He is the Chief Quality Control Officer.”
O’Hare’s succeeds in creating the atmosphere of a neighbourhood Irish pub. The beamed ceiling is inscribed with Irish county names and the front room pays homage to Ireland’s numerous well-known artists and poets including Brendan Behan, James Joyce, Flann O’Brien, Oscar Wilde and W.B. Yeats. A few years ago the outdoor patio was renovated and has proven to be a very popular spot to dine and enjoy a drink. A complete renovation of the bar is next on the to-do list. The time has come for an upgrade although Jack mentions it will be a huge job, and must be in keeping with the character of O’Hare’s.

An extensive selection of craft beers can be found on tap. Every Friday night a keg is featured. An impressive 20 beers are represented on tap and 15 of them are rotating local craft beers. Jack says, “It is exceptionally popular and is attracting a lot more ladies to drink beer.” Richmond based Britannia Brewing Company and Fuggles and Warlock are both on tap. Other popular breweries include Driftwood Brewery (Victoria), Four Winds Brewing Co. (Delta) and Strathcona Beer Company (Vancouver). This past summer O’Hare’s collaborated with Britannia Brewing Company and Fuggles and Warlock to produce a limited run of Sea Lion Watermelon Sour. Based on the success of this venture, Erinn says, “We are looking at collaborating with other breweries.” If you are looking for an authentic Irish beer to accompany your meal, Guinness, the famous Irish stout, is the pub’s top seller. Smithwick’s red ale is another long-standing traditional Irish beer that was established in 1710. Much of O’Hare’s food offerings have remained unchanged; customers enjoy the staple dishes that have been offered since the beginning. Some of the menu mainstays include homemade meat pies, beef dip, the O’Hare’s burger, and beef stew in the winter. And while there are tried and true favourites, there is also room for experimentation with the monthly feature sheet.
“We sell a good time.” Jack O’Hare Jack mentions two significant historical turning points for B.C. pubs. The provincial government banned smoking in bars and

restaurants across British Columbia by 2000. Jack says, “There was a high mortality rate for pubs.” This led the business owner to place a higher emphasis on the food menu. Another change came in 2013 when B.C. liquor reforms allowed children to join their parents in neighbourhood pubs up until a designated hour (10:00 p.m. at O’Hare’s). As a result, O’Hare’s is now more like an Irish pub than ever; in Ireland it is commonplace for families to gather for a pub meal. Allowing all ages to dine together has been advantageous for the business. Jack mentions, “In the past couples would meet at the pub. They would marry, have children and then we wouldn’t see them again for 19 years, but now we do!” Erinn adds, “It’s a real family place. We often see three generations come in together.” O’Hare’s is a community hub. Erinn says, “If you come to the pub you are likely to run into

someone you know.” You can also expect a warm welcome. Jack says, “Regulars will walk in the door and we know where they’re going to sit and what drink they will order.” He also points out, “The goal is to not have people wait. We serve them on arrival. Service is the most important thing.” Erinn and Grant value Jack’s years of experience in the food and beverage industry. Erinn says, “He offers us his wisdom.” In the early years O’Hare’s held a pig roast every Sunday and gave away the proceeds to non-profit groups. A party is scheduled for Sunday, October 1 to mark the establishment’s 30th anniversary.
