Publisher's Note Steveston will soon be bright with twinkling lights, festive windows and oversized ornaments. October was a busy month in the village, with the Steveston Scarecrow Crawl, costumed trick-or-treaters filling the streets on Halloween, and two elections just one week apart. Congratulations to Rob Howard, Richmond’s new mayor, and to the newly elected council. Kelly Greene decided not to seek re-election as Richmond-Steveston MLA; we thank her for her years of service and commitment to our community. On our cover is Steveston Seafood House owner Shane Dagan with his son Anthony and his mother, affectionately known as Nonna. Shane began as a 15-year-old busboy, and now Anthony is following in his footsteps at this community favourite, serving guests since 1978. Inside, read about its longstanding team, connections to local fishing families and the return of Nonna’s Kitchen this January.

Whale Watch chapter, and welcome Prince of Whales to the village. Wander Bike Rentals has closed after a brief time in the village. We look forward to the new Steveston Community Centre and Library as it nears completion. Winter in the Village kicks off with Girls’ Night Out on November 19, a local favourite for shopping, socializing and supporting village merchants. Festivities continue on Sunday, November 29, when Santa arrives by boat. Watch for him coming into the harbour, then visit the Gulf of Georgia Cannery for photos. Later that afternoon, gather at the Steveston Tram for the tree-lighting celebration from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m., with complimentary refreshments at Snack Corner during the same time. Horsedrawn carriage rides return on November 29 and December 6, and the Christmas Dog Parade and dog photos with Santa take place on December 6.

Also in this issue, read about The Bone and Biscuit Company. Their shop specializes in natural pet food, treats and accessories, including many Canadian-made products.

Other seasonal favourites include the Steveston Christmas Craft Fair, and Songs in the Snow. Looking ahead, the Steveston Icebreaker returns on January 17, followed by the Dine Out Vancouver Festival from January 19 to February 12. Chinese New Year falls on February 6, ushering in the Year of the Goat.

Congratulations to Chef Nutcha and the team at Baan Lao Fine Thai Cuisine on being named North America’s Best Restaurant 2026 at the World Culinary Awards.

The Steveston Merchants Association continues its work towards creating a Business Improvement Area, with outreach expected to wrap up over the next few months.

Welcome to Bayview Animal Hospital, now open for business. We also wish Cedric Towers a happy retirement as he closes the Vancouver

Wishing everyone a peaceful and happy holiday season in Steveston, and all the best for 2027.

STEVESTON SEAFOOD HOUSE: A Community Favourite Since 1978 Story by Sarah Gordon | Photos by Sandra Steier & submitted Steveston Seafood House is a landmark business that has been associated with upscale dining in our waterfront community since 1978. The business has adapted many times, and the kitchen is always tinkering with the menu, but changes have been made gradually. Some dishes have been favourites for decades. Owner Shane Dagan says, “I always say that good food is good food, whatever year it is. Fresh ingredients, careful cooking and a meal people look forward to sharing never go out of style.” Shane has spent most of his life at Steveston Seafood House; he purchased the business in 2007, when he was 24. He says, “I started here in 1998, when I was 15, as a busboy. One of my first jobs was making sure the ashtrays were clean and empty. I went on to work as a dishwasher, cook, bartender and server. Those years gave me an appreciation for every part of the restaurant. Today I’m involved with our team, guest experience, purchasing, menus and the direction of the business.”

8

Now, his son Anthony is following in his footsteps. “I’m proud and happy that I get to work with him, just as I’ve had the chance to work with three of my stepchildren. I started here as a teenager, so watching Anthony begin on the floor brings back a lot of memories. I don’t know where his path will take him, but I’m glad we get to share this part of it.”

“Seeing the next generation find its place here means a great deal to me.” Schnitzel Richmond is one of restaurant’s signature dishes. The breaded pork is topped with Pacific crab, baby shrimp and Béarnaise sauce. It and the Mighty Fraser have been guest favourites for years. The miso-marinated sablefish is also popular, and it’s Shane’s personal favourite. A couple of times a year the restaurant has sablefish smoked, which is always a hit.

Local suppliers and fishermen are very important to the business. Some relationships with fishing families span three generations. Whenever it’s possible and practical, they buy directly from Steveston’s Fisherman’s Wharf. “When there’s an opening for spring salmon, we buy what we can and vacuum seal some for the winter. During the summer, we’re at the dock regularly for spot prawns, Dungeness crab, octopus and sablefish. Serving seafood from people working just down the road is one of the pleasures of being in Steveston.”

“I’m most proud of the opportunities the restaurant has given people. Hundreds have earned a living here. For many young people, it was their first job, and I’ve watched former bussers and dishwashers go on to become teachers, police officers, lawyers, judges and nurses. I’m proud of the team that built this place and of the part it has played in their lives.”

Steveston Seafood House currently has a team of about 30. Shane notes that head chef Sushila Narain has been at the helm since 1980. That’s 46 years of cooking for generations of guests. For Shane, longevity comes down to the people behind the restaurant and the experience they create for guests. “The restaurant is only as good as the team behind it, and I’ve been blessed with an amazing one. Many staff have treated the place like their own. I came up in the restaurant in the 1990s, when attentive service was expected, and our experienced staff have passed that tradition on to younger teammates. We want guests to feel that someone is genuinely looking after their evening.” 9

“We host birthdays, anniversaries, family dinners and holiday parties. On a busy Saturday, we might serve many tables, but for one of those tables it could be a dinner their family remembers for years. We try never to lose sight of that.” “People tell us they enjoy the food, but what stays with me is when they say they feel at home here. They know they can bring their family, celebrate something important or simply come in for a good dinner and be looked after. Earning that trust over the years means a great deal.”

“Life moves quickly, and I hope this can still be a place where people take their time together.”

Guests have come to the restaurant on a first date and now return with their children or grandchildren.

10

Shane grew up in Richmond and went to Burnett High School, among others. What he loves most about Steveston is the people. Over the years they’ve supported local schools, nonprofits and community fundraisers. Wigs for Kids BC is especially close to their hearts, and they’re also proud sponsors of the Richmond Sockeyes.

“In January, my mother, whom we call Nonna, will be back in the kitchen for two months for our annual Nonna’s Kitchen menu. It features classic Italian dishes from her hometown in Calabria. We tried it last year and the response was wonderful.” “Above all, Steveston Seafood House has never been the work of one person. It’s the work of an extraordinary team and generations of guests who have supported us. Whether someone has been coming for decades or is walking through the door for the first time, we’d love to welcome them in.”

“I think giving people a place to gather, celebrate, work and feel welcome is part of being involved in the community too.”

Steveston Seafood House 3951 Moncton Street Phone 604-271-5252 stevestonseafoodhouse.com

Some people may not be aware that Shane’s team launched Mr. Cooper’s Pies in 2020. It began as a side project making pies for Steveston’s Best of British, The Fowl Farmer and Seafair Gourmet Meats, then grew to more than 100 retail locations across the province. At one point, they were making 500 pies a day. They have scaled it back to the local market and are planning a new Mr. Cooper’s line for Richmond in the new year. With the holidays approaching, there is much to look forward to, starting with Girls’ Night Out on November 19. The restaurant will also welcome families, friends and work groups, offering set menus and private dining space for festive gatherings. 11

THE BONE & BISCUIT COMPANY: Steveston's Natural Pet Food Shop Story by Sarah Gordon | Photos by Carolynne Palla Dogs and cats, perk up your ears, there’s a new pet food store in the village where you’re welcome to come in, have a sniff and even be offered a treat.

supplements and remedies designed just for cats and dogs, great food and treats, Bailey now has the best tummy in town.” She laughs, “If only her breeder could see me now!”

The Bone and Biscuit Company opened on No. 1 Road on May 22, 2026. There are over 67 locations across Canada, and the company is continuing to grow. Pet owners can feel good knowing The Bone and Biscuit Company originated in Edmonton in 2008 and is 100 per cent Canadian-owned.

The business partners were able to choose which community they would like to locate their shop. It was a no-brainer since they both live in the area. Tara is a long-time Steveston resident and wanted to serve the neighbourhood that she knows, trusts and grew up in.

The natural pet food store specializes in raw dog food, natural baked treats, raw cat food and accessories. Business partners Tara Ichiiwa and Mario Garchitorena previously worked together at The Running Room. Sharing a similar vision of how to operate a retail business, the friends decided to join forces and embark on opening a shop. Ever since Tara was young, she dreamed of owning her own store. When her two-year-old Golden Retriever Bailey experienced stomach issues, Tara knew she had to take action. “With wonderful products like Adored Beast Apothecary, a natural and holistic line of health 14

The bright, nicely laid-out shop catches the attention of both pet owners and their four-legged companions. Some treats are displayed at eye level, including what Tara affectionately calls the “Bark Barn,” making it easy for pets to spot something tasty. A large, refrigerated case runs along the back wall, showcasing the store’s selection of fresh and raw pet food. The rustic-looking floors add warmth to the space and tie in beautifully with the character of the store. Tara says, “The store is run by me and Mario, and Bailey is our assistant manager and the best store mascot. Customers can often see her lounging at the front door or inside greeting people.”

Customers regularly say that the shop owners are so welcoming and helpful. “It’s a wonderful place to build deep-rooted relationships within the community. We meet lots of local dogs and cats, loyal neighbours and seasonal visitors, and we’re excited to continue getting to know everyone.” “Building relationships with customers is our focus. We have created many positive interactions and can’t wait for what’s to come,” Mario says. He shares one example: “A customer told me that on their evening walks their dog must make a quick check to see if our store is closed. They wait by the door for a bit and then head on their way again.”

Community is an integral part of The Bone and Biscuit Company’s philosophy.

They often donate dog and cat food to local shelters. They have helped with neighbourhood cleanups at local dog parks; you can often see them handing out free samples and they’re always open to joining in on community activities. Tara says, “We like our customers to experience a boutique store specializing in natural nutrition that their pets will find is big on taste. Our treats are free from unnecessary fillers and artificial additives.” The Bone and Biscuit Company offers a great selection of both local and Canadian-made products, which include Richmond’s own Super Good Pets, the Granville Island Pet Treatery, Delta-based Wild Vibes Treat Co., and Port Coquitlam’s Only One Treats. Their bestselling products include their Canadian-made treats, a large selection of raw food and treats, and durable toys like Tall

15

Tails. The shop is an authorized dealer for Ruffwear. Dogs are welcome to try on hard-tofind gear in store. Complimentary treats for visiting animals are always offered, but Mario and Tara first make sure to ask about allergies. “We always have samples too. If your furry friend would like to try a treat, just ask us; we would be happy to find a treat your dog likes.” Customers can earn loyalty points while stocking up on pet food, treats and accessories, with one point earned for every dollar spent. Frequent-buyer programs are also available, including buy 12, get one free on selected dry pet foods, raw foods and treats. Best of all, the program is free. In addition to the array of pet foods, the store has a bakery case filled with beautiful dog cookies, as well as a special birthday section and luxurious Bowsers dog and cat beds. During the holiday season they will have weekly promotions, lots of new festive treats and accessories as well as advent calendars from Bosco & Roxy’s and PureBites for both dogs and cats. Mario says, “The most gratifying part of operating the business so far is hearing 16

success stories about pets that are feeling better with more energy simply because we have helped find a good diet that makes them thrive.” Tara, Mario and Bailey invite you and your cat or dog to stop in for a treat, a chat or just to say hello. Your pet’s photo may even end up on the slideshow behind the front desk, where you can see other local friends who have paid a visit! A New Chapter for Cedric Towers Celebrating 28 years of Vancouver Whale Watch After 28 years of connecting visitors with the marine life beyond Steveston, Vancouver Whale Watch founder Cedric Towers is retiring. With the business passing to Prince of Whales, he will help with the transition and remain a familiar face around the village.

Education was part of the experience. Wildlife guides shared their knowledge of marine mammals, local ecosystems and conservation, giving passengers a greater understanding of the coastal environment alongside their photographs and memories.

The company began in 1998 as Captain Zodiac, an eco-tourism business with one 12-passenger Zodiac. Whale watching from the Vancouver mainland was not yet an established industry, but Cedric believed Steveston could become a departure point for these excursions.

Captains, guides and shore staff helped turn Cedric’s idea into an established tourism business. His retirement offers an opportunity to recognize their contribution alongside his vision and commitment.

His vision became Vancouver Whale Watch, recognized by the Pacific Whale Watch Association as the first company to conduct regular whale-watching tours from the Vancouver area. The fleet grew, welcoming thousands of passengers annually and bringing visitors to Steveston’s shops, restaurants and waterfront.

As Prince of Whales takes ownership, the community welcomes the new operator and acknowledges the foundation Cedric and his team have built. Steveston Insider congratulates Cedric on 28 years in business and thanks him for his contribution to the village. Best wishes for a happy retirement, with time to enjoy the coast he helped so many others appreciate. 27
