Summer has arrived in Steveston, bringing long days, meals on waterfront patios, and plenty of reasons to spend time in the village. Stroll the boardwalk, browse the shops, enjoy fresh seafood by the harbour, or relax with a coffee while taking in the view. It’s also a great time to support the local businesses that make Steveston one of Metro Vancouver’s favourite destinations.
This summer also brings the excitement of the FIFA World Cup from June 11 to July 19. Several Steveston restaurants and pubs are setting up their TVs and viewing areas, giving soccer fans plenty of opportunities to catch the action while enjoying great food and hospitality close to home.
Visitors can also take advantage of the free Discovery Shuttle, operating between Richmond and Steveston on weekends throughout the summer, courtesy of Tourism Richmond. Cyclists can enjoy complimentary bike valet service at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery. The Steveston Farmers & Artisans Market returns to Garry Point Park on select dates, while the Steveston Vintage Fair takes place at Town Square Park.
Get ready for Canada Day as the Steveston Salmon Festival returns for its 79th year. Read our feature on Canada’s biggest little birthday party and learn about the activities, entertainment, and community traditions returning on July 1. While construction has
prompted a few changes to the festival’s layout, visitors can still look forward to the parade, Salmon Bake, live entertainment, and family activities.

Inside, learn how the Society has grown from a small volunteer organization into a cornerstone of the community while continuing to preserve the stories, places, and traditions that define Steveston.
There is always something new happening in the village. Recent additions include Vietnamese Alley, Wander Bike Rentals, RH Skin Wellness, Sunrise Counselling, and Bone & Biscuit. Bayview Animal Hospital is expected to open later this year. I am also excited to welcome the new owners of the Steveston Hotel, Café and Liquor Store. As long-time residents with extensive business experience, they bring a strong connection to the community and a vision for the future of this iconic Steveston landmark.
From the Salmon Festival and the FIFA World Cup celebrations to community events and everyday village life, there are plenty of exciting things happening in Steveston. We hope this issue helps you stay informed and connected to all that’s happening in the village.

STEVESTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY: 50 Years of Preserving Steveston's Stories

For 50 years, the Steveston Historical Society (SHS) has been dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of Steveston. The nonprofit organization held its first meeting on July 28, 1976, and was founded by Kathy and Harold Steves. Co-chair Linda Barnes recalls that the Society began with just 20 members, a handful of whom still remain involved in various ways.
The Society was originally created to preserve what is now the Steveston Museum and Post Office, formerly the Northern Bank building. Constructed in 1905, it was Steveston’s first bank. It was absorbed by the Royal Bank of
Canada in 1918 and remained an RBC branch until 1963, when the bank relocated across the street. Visitors can still see the original bank manager’s office and RBC bank vault inside the museum.
From 1966 to 1977, the building served as Dr. James Campbell’s medical clinic. He sold the building to the Municipality of Richmond on the understanding that it would be preserved as a heritage building.
In 1979, the building reopened as the Steveston Museum and Steveston Village Post Office.
In its early years, the Society relied heavily on volunteers, who operated the post office and handled many of the day-to-day responsibilities to keep the site running. Over time, the organization evolved from those grassroots beginnings into a more structured operation, expanding its museum programming and community events while eventually hiring staff to support its growing role in the community.
Linda served as Chairperson for three years before transitioning into her current role as co-chair in 2018. Today, SHS operates both the Steveston Museum and Post Office and employs five part-time staff members. The Society also oversees the Steveston Japanese Canadian Museum, located next door on First Avenue, further extending its role in preserving and sharing the area’s diverse history.
As the Society marks its 50th anniversary, it is looking toward the future.
One important step is the hiring of an Executive Director. “It feels like a natural extension to get more visibility in the community and prepare for the next 50 years,” Linda explains, emphasizing the Society’s commitment to long-term sustainability and growth.
A community celebration will be held on July 26 at Town Square Park in support of a fundraising campaign for the Legacy Mural Project. The project will create a lasting tribute to Steveston’s rich history, reflecting the people and spirit that have shaped the village over the decades. The mural will be installed on the wall of the Pacific Net & Twine shop adjacent to the park.
The Society’s monthly Pop-up Art Shows bring fresh creative energy into the museum space, showcasing the work of local artists. Guests
can browse original artwork while supporting both the artists and the Society, with a portion of all sales helping fund SHS programs and events.
Over the years, community and corporate partners have helped SHS events grow and thrive.
One example is Songs in the Snow: A Vintage Christmas, an annual free holiday concert series hosted in collaboration with the Richmond Arts Coalition. Held in Town Square Park beside the museum, the event brings together live performances, community singing, and holiday crafts, creating a festive gathering space for the community during the holiday season.
The Steveston Vintage Fair has become a favourite seasonal event. Held on select Sundays in July and August at Town Square Park, the fair features vendors offering vintage treasures ranging from china and linens to retro collectibles, toys, and accessories, creating a nostalgic shopping experience in the heart of the village.
The Society continues to offer its popular Saturday summer walking tour vignettes, sharing Steveston’s history with both residents and visitors. In partnership with the drama department at Steveston-London Secondary School, students gain real-life acting experience by performing locally written historical reenactments at key heritage sites. It is a lively and engaging way to bring local history to life.

of the Province of British Columbia, which helps make both Songs in the Snow and the walking tours possible. They also wish to thank Steveston’s merchants and community supporters for their continued generosity, including contributions to fundraising efforts and anniversary initiatives.
Fifty years after its founding, the Steveston Historical Society continues to preserve the stories, places and traditions that define the community, ensuring that Steveston’s history remains alive for future generations.

Pets Hide Pain: Signs Every Owner Should Know

With the old community centre now demolished, Moncton Street has taken on a new look as construction continues on the community’s future hub. Amid the ongoing work, organizers of the Steveston Salmon Festival have adapted their plans to ensure visitors can once again enjoy the activities, entertainment, and community spirit that have made the festival a cherished Canada Day tradition.
Due to ongoing construction and renovations, some festival venues have been relocated, and the annual art show will not take place this year.
Celebrating its 79th year, the Steveston Salmon Festival continues to thrive thanks to the dedication of hundreds of volunteers, local businesses, and partners who help bring the village to life.
The Salmon Festival began in 1944 as a sports day-themed fundraiser to build a playground in Steveston Park. Today, it remains one of the country’s largest volunteer-run Canada Day celebrations.
The festival draws visitors from across Metro Vancouver.
Highlights include the iconic two-hour parade and a full day of programming featuring live music, delicious food, cultural exhibitions, and fun for the entire family.
Start the day bright and early with pancakes hot off the griddle. The Rotary Club’s Pancake Breakfast begins at 8:00 a.m. just east of the Steveston Community Police Station
Spectators arrive early to stake out their favourite spots along the parade route.
The festivities begin at 9:30 a.m. with the kids’ bike parade. Children accompanied by parents or guardians set off on their decorated bikes, wagons, and scooters from the corner of Chatham Street and Third Avenue. The bike parade concludes at the Steveston Community
Police Station. Pre-registration is not required. Arrive between 8:30 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. to sign up. Note: Helmets are mandatory.
Thousands of spectators line the streets each year for the main parade, featuring floats, marching bands, classic vehicles, and the beloved mascot Sammy the Salmon.
Starting at 10:00 a.m., the parade kicks off at Garry Point Park before winding east along Chatham Street, continuing south on Third Avenue, and heading east on Moncton Street before wrapping up at Railway Avenue.
Festival venues are open from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., except for the SOS Zone (Spirit of Steveston), which will remain open until 7:30 p.m. Located in the East Hope parking lot across from the former community centre, the family-friendly zone will feature food trucks and a separate beer garden.
The stage will feature tribute bands throughout the day. Closing out the evening will be Vancouver’s own Barney Bentall and The Legendary Hearts, performing from 6:00 to 7:15 p.m.
The iconic Salmon Bake draws huge crowds annually.
It takes place in the same grassy area as in previous years, northeast of the Steveston Community Police Station near the ball diamond. Arrive early, as the 3,000 meals typically sell out within a few hours. Nearby, a small stage will feature performances by local youth groups.
Located behind the Net Shed, the Salmon Run area features the Catch of the Day stage with ongoing live entertainment. The area also includes the youth activation zone surrounding the lacrosse box and tennis courts.
The main food truck area will be in the Maples Residence parking lot beside the lacrosse box along with Steveston’s own D Original Sausage Haus. The ever-popular chow mein booth can be found close to the Salmon Bake and Catch of the Day stage.
Due to work at the Martial Arts building, it will be closed to the public. As a result, the Japanese Cultural Show and Indoor Marketplace vendors will be relocated to the Net Shed, with additional vendors set up outdoors.
Visit Sammy’s Fun Zone at the Steveston Community Park Playground and enjoy a fun-filled day of buttonmaking, colouring, face painting, and other family-friendly activities.
Returning this year, Sponsors Row will be set up along No. 1 Road south of Moncton Street. Drop by to enjoy samples and participate in hands-on activities.
Stop by the information booth at the playground to purchase raffle tickets for prizes including $500 Gordon Ramsay Restaurants gift cards, a one-night stay in a one-bedroom suite at the River Rock Casino Resort, a paddleboard, and a camping stove courtesy of Coca-Cola Canada.
Festival planners are still recruiting volunteers across multiple zones—from hospitality to event logistics, youth activities, and set-up crews. Those interested in contributing can find more information on the official Steveston Salmon Festival website.
People are encouraged to walk or cycle to the festival whenever possible. Parking will be available at McMath Secondary and Homma Elementary schools, and the City of Richmond will provide shuttle buses departing from City Hall.
Bring your bike and store it in one of two bike valets. No lock is required, as this will be a secured compound operated like a coat check. Strollers can also be checked here. Wheel Watch hours of operation are 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. It is located east of the Community Police Station.
Steveston Bike Valet is open from 10:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and is located at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic site parking lot.
Steveston Salmon Festival Coordinator Mary Ann Pizzinato says, “The Steveston Salmon Festival will look a bit different this year, but nearly everything visitors know and love will be here!”

What is a Business Improvement Area (BIA)?
A Business Improvement Area (BIA) is a non-profit organization representing businesses and commercial property owners within a defined area. A BIA is created through a City bylaw and funded through a shared contribution from commercial properties within the district. The City collects these funds and the BIA uses them to support programs that benefit the area.

Why Form a BIA in Steveston Village?
About 40 businesses currently fund marketing, events, and beautification in the village, supported by volunteer time and effort. This model has worked for many years but is difficult to sustain.
A BIA creates a fair and stable funding model, allowing the district to support marketing, events, beautification, and advocacy that benefits the entire business area. This approach helps strengthen the commercial district and support long-term property value.
What Can a BIA Do for Steveston Village?
• Marketing and promotion that brings more customers to Steveston businesses.
• Events and seasonal programming that attract shoppers, families, and visitors to the village.
• Improved streetscapes and storefronts that strengthen the appearance of the commercial district.

A BIA would provide the structure and resources needed to support the village long term, with coordinated marketing, consistent programming, and a unified voice working with the City.
BIAs support many of Metro Vancouver’s most successful commercial districts, including Kerrisdale, South Granville, and Downtown Vancouver.
How is a BIA Funded?
• A Business Improvement Area is funded through a shared contribution from commercial properties within the district.
• Each property contributes a portion of the annual budget based on its assessed property value.
• For example, if a property represents 1% of the total assessed value within the BIA boundary, it would contribute 1% of the annual budget.
• The City collects these funds and the BIA uses them to support marketing, events, beautification, and district initiatives that benefit the area.
• Important: A BIA can only be established through a City bylaw following a formal notification and approval process with all affected property owners.
