BEYOND THE WEATHER by Sarah Gordon
Human social relationships have always interested me. Why is that when you go for an early morning walk people greet each other like morning songbirds, eager to welcome the arrival of a new day, but by lunchtime, which as far as I can determine seems to be the arbitrary cut off, do greetings end? Perhaps mid-day greetings become overwhelming due to the volume of people that you will encounter as the day progresses. Years ago, I worked in an office located in a residential area of Vancouver. On this particular street, there lived a cat named Omar. He was a very handsome Abyssinian and he lived the life of Riley. People would kill to be as popular as he was. Omar was extremely social. I would watch as people paused to address him by name. “Good morning, Omar”, “Hello Omar”, spoke men with briefcases, and women in their office clothes making their way to and from work. Everyone loved him. I am a cat lover so I understood their attraction to Omar, and I must admit he sprang around our office whenever we would let him come in. It seemed that Omar had broken through ‘the time of day barrier.’ Perhaps it was because he was a cat, and he would not engage in conversation, that people stopped to say hello. There is always a chance to move beyond weather-talk and open up the door for a discussion with strangers. The federal election, the Royal Wedding and the Canucks in the Stanley Cup playoffs have all been recent fodder for discussion. Although spectacular events come and go, there are always other generic conversation starters. Thinking again about Omar, it seems that animals help break the ice for humans to engage in conversation, even if it is with a cat. Dog owner friends tell me that it is impossible to go for a walk without stopping to talk to fellow dog owners. They meet an assortment of people who may share nothing or everything in common, and it is thanks to the dog that an introduction is made. Unlike an urban centre where people pass by in a hurry, where you can feel a little lost in the crowd, Steveston is like a breath of fresh air where you can connect with people. Certainly, that is a large part of the success of the farmers market, where you can run into friends as you select your veggies. Ultimately, most people want to feel like they are a part of their community, and living in Steveston invites camaraderie. So the next time you are out for an afternoon walk along the dyke, try greeting someone, and see if you can break the time of day barrier like Omar managed to do!

HOME GROWN BAND IS WORTH CHASING DOWN by Sarah Gordon
What comes to mind when you think about Steveston? Most likely, a historical fishing village, the Fraser River, Fisherman’s Wharf, great boutiques and restaurants, but perhaps a rising rock band on your back door step would not be at the top of the list. In fact, in the future Steveston may receive attention as the place where it all began for The Chase. The Chase is comprised of band members Jeremy Hankins (guitar), Jameson Hankins (drums), Mischa Lowenstein (guitar), Jeek McIntyre (bass) and Kyle Owens (vocals). They are instantly recognizable in their matching black jeans, white v-neck t-shirts and black vests, reminiscent of the early days of British rock when The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks and The Animals wore matching suits. In their own words, The Chase enjoy making fun energized party music, and they are not out to make people cry. In the past five years, with an innovative sound and a charismatic stage presence, The Chase has entered the Metro Vancouver music scene and successfully demonstrated that retro-rock does not have to sound like something you have already heard. Inspired by rock legends including The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and newer bands such as Sam Roberts and Arctic Monkeys, The Chase was raised on a steady diet of music from across the pond, and most of the music that they listen to originates from the United Kingdom. In 2006, while still attending McMath Secondary, twins Jeremy and Jameson met Jeek in a guitar class. They recruited Kyle to be the voice of the band. Kyle is the band’s vocal front man while Jeremy is the key songwriter. After playing countless shows around Metro Vancouver, The Chase added Mischa to the line-up. With a second guitarist, the band was able to expand their musical horizons and rally audiences with their dynamic live performances. Family support in their early years was an integral part of their journey to becoming musicians. When they were young, Jeremy and Jameson enjoyed playing behind the couch where they would make up songs with their mother’s old two-string guitar. Music was always a part of Kyle’s life as his father is a musician and a high school music teacher. Jeek’s guitar playing uncle inspired him to pick up the guitar. There was always a guitar lying around Mischa’s house; however, it was not until he was in Grade 8 and saw grade 12 students Jeremy, Jameson and Jeek perform that he thought it would be cool to learn how to play and be in a band. In the early years, living rooms and garages were converted into jam spaces. All of the band members come from supportive and loving families who attend many of their shows. Indeed the band feels extremely grateful for the support of their parents and closest friends. Jeremy, Jameson and Mischa continue to live in Steveston while Kyle and Jeek live in Vancouver, but they enjoy coming back to their old stomping ground. The Chase enjoys hanging out at Blue Canoe Waterfront Restaurant where Kyle’s photograph hangs on the restaurant’s wall of fame. Garry Point was one of the band’s favourite places to hang out during their teen years. They enjoyed having hot dog roasts on the beach, and beach fires, before fires were banned in the park. photo by Matthew J. Van Deventer

What is their long-term goal? The Chase hope to become established as a top rock and roll band, yet ever loyal to Steveston, they will miss home when they are away on world tours. In the meantime, they will continue to work their way to the top by playing locally, which will include performing for their fourth year at the Steveston Salmon Festival’s Rock Fest on Canada Day. They derive a great deal of satisfaction from playing gigs where nobody has heard of them and by the end of the evening, they have a roomful of new fans. Their fan base may soon be spreading across Canada as The Chase is working on booking their first Western Canada tour, which may also include venturing east to Toronto and Montreal. At this point, they do not have a record label; however, they have succeeded in getting their songs onto i-Tunes, which is an important stepping-stone for making their music widely available. Jay “Juice” Evjen of JuiceMix Productions produced their self-titled CD. The cover photo features The Chase’s black and white ‘uniform’ lying on the beach and the back cover photograph was shot at one of their favourite places, Garry Point. The future looks bright for this young band. Make a point of catching a performance soon as it may not be long before you are chasing down tickets to see them in concert when they return home from a world tour. www.wearethechase.com Steveston Insider Magazine •

THERE’S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOE BUSINESS... by Sarah Gordon
Stepin’ Out Shoes and Accessories Boutique owners Duane and Sue Laviolette are on the move. Have no fear, they are not going far, in fact, the shop is simply trading spaces with neighbouring business Laara’s Vacuums. Stepin’ Out has outgrown its current location and needs a larger space for their customers comfort, as well as for the growth of their successful business. Stepin’ Out has been in business since 2005. In 2008, the couple decided to expand their retail business to children’s clothing, and opened Buttons and Soles Children’s Shoes and Clothing on Bayview Street. Duane operates Buttons and Soles while Sue is a block and a half away at Stepin’ Out. Duane Laviolette owned his first shoe and clothing store in Lumby, B.C. where he trained as a cobbler. He moved to the Lower Mainland in 1989. Originally, from Sussex, New Brunswick, Sue moved to Richmond in 1971. They met in Richmond in 1999 and have lived in Steveston for eleven years. The original location of Stepin’ Out was on First Avenue. Duane worked for the first eight months with Sue’s assistance while she continued to work full-time with a software company. A year later, they moved to the corner of No. 1 Road and Moncton Street. Sue came on board full-time, and they created the corner boutique known for its quality designer footwear, handbags, jewellery, glasses, scarves, hats, belts and gloves. They find Stevestonites to be incredibly supportive of their business; in fact, many of their customers have been regulars since they opened. Personal service is important to Steveston shoppers, and the Laviolettes aim to please by taking time to help their customers find the perfect shoes to match their outfit. Like the shoes they sell, many of their customers come from around the world including Spain, Israel, South Africa, India, China, Romania and Mexico. The Laviolette’s enjoy the excitement and challenge of seeking brands that suit the community, as well as searching for accessories to match their shoe selection. While making a fashion statement is an important part of purchasing shoes, they strive to help their customers find the most comfortable and well fitting pair of shoes. Duane and Sue Laviotte believe Steveston is a unique location and appreciate its rich history and great beauty. They have three grown children living in Vernon, Calgary and Nelson. When not working, the Laviolettes enjoy walking around the village or hopping on their motorcycle. In the summer, they enjoy boating in the Gulf Islands, and on sunny days, Sue motors about in her 1979 red Corvette. Last winter they left the two businesses in the capable hands of their managers Christine Chandler and Michelle Haggerty, and headed for the sunny south. Their hope is that Stepin’ Out will continue to thrive and provide a unique shopping experience for their long term local customers, and for their shoe loving friends from around the world! BEING ACTIVE & BEING HAPPY by Dave Gillis
Being healthy is not only about physical fitness, it is also about your mental health. As a professional coach, I often forget that peace of mind relates not only to my health, but also to the health of my family. For over a decade, I have had the good fortune to be a Richmond resident. I love living in this city, respected as being one of the healthiest cities in Canada. Recently my family and I made a big change when we moved to Steveston. Before living here, we knew that the small town atmosphere defined the community. During many trips to the docks, into the village for fish and chips, or exploring the shops, we found ourselves saying ``wouldn’t it be great to live here?” I remember previous summers when we would visit the village and see happy and healthy families walking, biking and enjoying all of the sights and sounds of the neighbourhood. What I did not know then, but I have quickly learned, is how being a resident of this historic fishing village not only promotes an active lifestyle, but also a healthy mind. Now we are a part of this vibrant community. My family was out walking with new friends and neighbours from the first day we moved here. Driveways and local schools are full of kids playing hockey, soccer, softball and creating chalk masterpieces while the streets create giant highways for those learning to ride a bike safely. Not to deny we had these opportunities before, but I am pleasantly surprised at how it is a way of life in Steveston. I am happy to say my children are more active, and each day my daughter wants to take to the streets on yet another adventure. Morning walks to Garry Point, trips on foot into the village for groceries and a nightly bike ride are all part of our new lifestyle. Living here is like returning to my youth when you never knew what adventure was around the next corner. The Steveston Museum, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery and the library have all become regular walking or biking destinations, and provide excellent opportunities to enrich the mind. As spring turns into summer, I suspect our adventures will only get better. We will raise a flag on Canada Day at the Steveston Salmon Festival, and participate in the parade. I am sure that my family will be regulars at Steveston’s Water Park and Steveston Park playground. What I look forward to most, after busy days at work and out on the field coaching Richmond youth, is taking an evening walk to Garry Point, sitting on a log and watching the sun set over the water with my family and friends. Being active and healthy is very important, but remember to invest in your mental health as well. Enjoy all that this wonderful community has to offer year round. Dave Gillis is the co-ordinator of Sport and Instructional Programming for the University of BC in the Department of Athletics and Recreation and a coach of Soccer, Softball, Football, and Hockey in both Richmond and Vancouver. For over 25 years Dave has been working with adults, youth and children in health, fitness and sports as both a professionally certified coach and master level trainer with IDEA, the International Association of Health and Fitness.

STEVESTON SOCKEYE SPIN CRITERIUM BIKE RACE by Sarah Gordon It’s back! The second annual Steveston Sockeye Spin Criterium Bike Race takes to the streets of Steveston village on Sunday July 31, 2011. What is a criterium you may ask? It is a bike race held on a short course, usually less than 5 km, which takes place on closed-off city centre streets. As Steveston is such a popular destination for cyclists, cycling enthusiasts had discussed the idea of holding a race of this caliber in the village for years. Some of BC’s top-level riders are expected to attend again this year and participate in the fastpaced .9 km race that winds its way through the business district of Steveston village. Many of these riders hope to add to their individual and team points for the season. The race can be very fast and exciting, and sometimes race teams work together to try to push a rider to the front of the race. Turns can be dangerous and sometimes injuries occur. The race circuit is the same as last year, west on Moncton Street with the Start/Finish at Second Avenue, south on Third Avenue, east on Bayview Street and north on No. 1 Road. Races will take place in the late afternoon and continue into the evening. Organized by the Steveston Community Society, the Sockeye Spin receives a great deal of support from the City of Richmond. Months of planning go into this race. Steveston Community Society’s special events committee began working on the 2011 event in January. Sanctioned by Cycling BC, races feature both men’s and women’s category 1,2,3,4 and novice races, depending on the number of registrations. Prize money is awarded to the top three finishers in each of the category 1/2 men’s race and the category 1/2 women’s race. Preregistration is ongoing up until Friday July 29th. Race day registration is available at a higher fee. Consult the Steveston Community Society website for registration and race details. This family friendly event is free for spectators. In its inaugural year, the Sockeye Spin drew a crowd of approximately 2,000 people. As there is limited bleacher seating, consider supporting your favourite business and enjoy prime seating along the race route at restaurants and coffee shops. The entire village will be fenced off and all roads will be closed and free of vehicles. Alternate arrangements for event parking and full details will be in the local papers leading up to the event. Village businesses will be open, and organizers anticipate a festivallike atmosphere. There will be several marshaled crossing areas for shoppers and residents to access businesses. To add to the weekend’s festivities, the Steveston Community Society is bringing back Steveston Starry Nights outdoor movies. The first movie of the summer is scheduled for B.C. Day, Monday August 1, at dusk in Fisherman’s Park. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and snuggle up to watch a family flick. The remaining movie nights will be held August 14 and August 28. It promises to be an exciting long weekend in Steveston village from Start to Finish! www.stevestoncommunitysociety.com/SockeyeSpin 30

Steveston: A Renaissance Village by Sarah Gordon It does not get more picturesque than Steveston Village. The smell of the salt air and the cry of the seagulls make you feel like you are on a seaside holiday. Postcard perfect views of tug boats chugging along the Fraser River, with Mount Baker and the Gulf Islands as magnificent back drops on a clear sunny day (the average rainfall is 30% less than Vancouver!) remind Stevestonites how fortunate they are to live in this coastal setting. Nestled in the southwest pocket of Richmond, this historical fishing village is situated where the Fraser River meets the Pacific Ocean. Steveston was settled as a farming community in the 1880s but soon became the busiest fishing port in Canada, boasting fifteen canneries, six hotels, an opera house, numerous saloons and gambling dens. One century later the canneries had all closed and Steveston began to reinvent itself. Today Steveston is becoming the place to live as families are discovering the magic of small town living while being within hopping (on the Canada Line that is) distance of the Big Smoke, which is now a mere 24 minutes from downtown Richmond to Vancouver. Construction is booming and the local real estate market is at an all time high. The first thing you notice when you enter Steveston is an authentic charm. Friendly locals greet each other on the street. They utilize the services and feel extremely proud to call the village home. The community continues to be an active working-fishing village and is home to Canada’s largest commercial fishing fleet. It is also home to great restaurants, parks, heritage sites, fresh seafood, and one-of-a-kind gift shops. Although fish and chips are synonymous with Steveston, there are over forty diverse restaurants to tempt your taste buds. Kid-friendly restaurants are plentiful and include Blue Canoe Waterfront Restaurant, Sockeye City Grill, Kisamos Greek Taverna, Dave’s Fish & Chips and Pajo’s Fish & Chips. For a special adult’s night out, head to the award winning Tapenade Bistro. One of the hippest spots in Steveston is Gudrun Tasting Room. Tucked away in a little courtyard off Moncton Street, Gudrun draws rave reviews for its delectable tasting plates featuring local and organic products and a superb wine list to accompany the indulgence. Coffee is always close by if a cuppa joe is calling your name. Visit the Steveston Coffee Co. where they hand roast organic beans. Other outstanding coffee spots are Bean and Beyond Café, paired with their delicious menu, and Timothy’s Frozen Yogurt offers great coffee, a mean hot chocolate that kids love, not to mention the best ice cream in town. The bountiful sea and local farms provide plenty of opportunities to eat locally. A favourite destination for both tourists and locals is Fisherman’s Wharf where you can buy salmon, tuna, cod, halibut, shrimp, prawns and crab direct from the fishers. Nearby farms offer organic eggs, an abundance of vegetables and fruits including plump strawberries and blueberries in the summer and terrific pumpkin patches in the fall, and organic beef from Steveston Stock and Seed Farm. continued on p. 33 32

Families gravitate to Steveston for its natural beauty and a wealth of outdoor opportunities. Walking, running and cycling along the boardwalk and dyke trails are favourite local pastimes, with the added bonus of great flatland running. Not far from the village is Garry Point Park, which provides spectacular views of the Gulf Islands, a lovely walking trail, as well as being a terrific spot to fly a kite. It is also a great location to watch container boats and fishing vessels sail along the Fraser River. Heritage sites are plentiful. At the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site, you will learn that Steveston was once the salmon capital of the world. Britannia Heritage Shipyard, the Steveston Museum and London Heritage Farm are other family-friendly locations well worth visiting to learn about Steveston’s rich history. Family friendly events abound in Steveston. The Steveston Merchants Association (SMA) organizes many fabulous events including an annual Easter Egg Hunt, Steveston Trick or Treat and the popular new Scarecrow Crawl where scarecrows overtake the village. Another unique tradition, sponsored by the SMA, is Christmas in Steveston Village. Santa arrives by a whale watching boat at Fisherman’s Wharf, beautifully decorated businesses attract Christmas shoppers and diners, and people delight in riding in a horse drawn carriage around the village. The Steveston Farmers & Artisans Market, which has recently become a year round market, is a popular place to buy produce and crafts. The annual Canada Day Steveston Salmon Festival, attracts a crowd of approximately 100,000 people, and the new Steveston Sockeye Spin will undoubtedly continue to grow and become a important part of the race cycling circuit. The crème de la crème of local playgrounds is located at Steveston Park, next to the Steveston Community Centre. Always a favourite with its large range of playground equipment, the park took a leap in popularity when the nautical themed Steveston Water Park opened in 2007. continued on p. 34

One of Steveston’s oldest buildings, the two storey brick Hepworth Block (circa 1913), survived the great fire of 1918 and is home to three of Steveston’s favourite shops. Nikaido is a lovely store with an array of quality tea, gifts, pens and stationery. Next door is Splash Toy Shop, a little bit of heaven where your kids will want to spend the day! Sit them down at the train table and they will be as happy as clams. On the corner, Pieces gift shop features many Canadian artists and designers. You will find everything from Sid Dickens memory blocks, to a huge selection of jewellery, home decor, and fabulous handcrafted cottage style furniture by Langley artist Jill Hall. The Prickly Pear Garden Centre is well worth a visit and has a great selection of perennials, annuals, ornamental grasses, colourful containers and gorgeous cut flower bouquets. If you are searching for something fabulous to put on the dinner table Heringers Olde Fashioned Quality Meats is much more than a meat shop. Their excellent selection of quality meats, cheese, and deli treats will make any foodie squeal with delight. Clearly, Steveston is experiencing a renaissance. Following a visit to Steveston, Toronto Star journalist Richard Ouzounian concluded “the only thing more fascinating than its past is its present – and its future.” □ A version of this article was published in WestCoast Families Magazine
