Kerrisdale Publisher’s Note As I am looking out my window it is apparent that autumn has arrived. The leaves are changing colour which is always a beautiful sight, lawns and car windshields are damp with morning dew, neighbours are tidying up their gardens, the Kerrisdale Farmers Market had its last market of the season, and all the while the sun continues to shine. Autumn is such a cozy season. The days are getting shorter as clocks fall back in November. The chill in the air will soon have us reaching for a sweater, scarf, and yes; eventually we will be forced to pop up an umbrella as we all know this sunny streak can’t last forever! It will be time to light a fire and curl up with a good book under a warm throw.
During the summer we had the pleasure of visiting Tom Hobbs at his beautiful Southlands Nursery and asked him to be the October cover model for Kerrisdale Insider. In this issue we feature his and Brent Beattie’s shop Hobbs, which is one of our favourite places to find exquisite gifts. While photographing Tom, we met Girlie Koo, a long time resident of Kerrisdale, who graciously agreed to let us publish her story. Kerrisdale Business Association had a successful Kerrisdale Days on September 8th and 9th with the outdoor movie at Elm Park and the crowning of Kerrisdale Idol 2012! See some of the photos we took and learn about the new Idol winner, Frankie Cena. We are excited to spotlight Kathy Wyder and Erin Wyder’s business, the Secret Garden Tea Company, which is celebrating its seventeenth anniversary this month. The pictures alone tell a beautiful story of a successful business.
October is a time when families gather together to feast and honour their Thanksgiving traditions. Imagination comes to life as costumes are assembled for Halloween and houses are dressed up for this most “haunting” night of the year.

Kerrisdale Memories by Girlie Koo When we were photographing Tom Hobbs for the cover of the magazine, we met the most lovely woman named Girlie Koo. It was apparent that she has a rich knowledge of Kerrisdale’s history and is well loved in this community. I had to know more! With permission from Kerrisdale Collective Memory, we are printing Girlie’s story. I was born at 817 Keefer Street in 1921, the third child of six and, the second child of the family born in Vancouver. My father named me Girlie after a little girl whose parents he delivered produce to on his truck. My father built a store at 2138 W 41st Avenue to start his produce business: JB Hoy Produce. I was four years old. My father felt his shop was on the wrong side of the street, so he bought the building across the street, on the sunny side, 2171 W 41st Avenue around 1930. It used to be Buckerfield’s Chicken Feed and Seed store and it smelled so bad that my father had to tear down all the plaster and replaster the whole inside. We all lived upstairs. I can remember the street car running down the middle, and on the south side of the street would be wooden boards for the cars and the north side of the street would be gravel for horses! I used to stand and watch the horses go by. When my father passed away in 1931, my mother and my older brother ran the store. I dropped out of school in grade 7 or 8 so I could help in the store full time. In 1936, my mother wanted to retire and go back to China so she put the store up for sale. My brothers and sisters and I would go with her and get her settled. A fellow named Allen Koo ended up buying JB Hoy Produce and I helped him out for the month of October showing him the ropes. We fell in love ... and my mother approved! We were engaged on the 5th of December and I left for China on the 12th of December. When the Japanese war started and it became unsafe in China, all of us, including my mother, came back to Vancouver in September 1937. I got married in 1938, and I moved back upstairs

where I raised my own family, while Allen took care of the store. Everything was the honour system – right until the day I retired – people would pay for their groceries on a monthly bill. We kept a tally for each family in their own account book. Our son Ted eventually worked with my husband and my son Bob came to work with us in 1989. We became known for having very special produce like white asparagus and truffles from France and avocados from Hawaii. Customers had to ask for avocados from the back since we didn’t want anyone bruising them! We had gem lettuce and strawberries in winter before people could get them. We took special orders for Dover sole and lobsters once a year as well. We took pride in sourcing the very best and tried new produce at home. When my husband passed away in December 2001 we decided to retire in September 2002. What I miss most about the store besides all the delicious special produce that I can’t seem to find anywhere it would be all our friends that we would see every day! Kerrisdale Idol Frankie Cena A 21-year-old University of British Columbia student, Frankie Cena began singing at the age of 6, and was fortunate to travel the world with the British Columbia Boys Choir. He is now a solo R&B/Soul Artist. Cena has won numerous titles including Tri City Idol, Port Moody Idol, Lougheed Sings, Lougheed's Got Talent, and advanced to the TV round on Canadian Idol. During the Glee open casting call, Cena got to meet and perform for casting director, Robert Urlich.
In early September Cena was crowned Kerrisdale Idol. Three years earlier he had hoped to audition for this competition, however he did not arrive early enough to register to earn a spot in this popular contest. This year he was determined to show up extra early! The esteemed panel of judges commented that Cena needed a bigger stage based on his comfortable and polished style. He says the judges “really felt the words of the song” that he performed, “I Don’t Wanna Be” by Gavin Degraw. After his first performance, Cena advanced to the final six. He was first up in the finals, a dreaded spot for singers who fear they will be forgotten by subsequent performances. He poured his heart out with his rendition of Jay Sean’s “Down”. Cena had no idea what to expect as there were not judges’ comments in the final round. It came down to the anticipated moment where he was in the top two and Cena was declared the 2012 Kerrisdale Idol.
“I was absolutely elated. I had just come off of a huge win two weeks earlier and I couldn’t believe I won”. This win was particularly timely as Cena had recently decided to focus his efforts on singing and acting, rather than attending law school. In addition to his singing career, Cena is an actor with Evangelista Talent Management and next spring will complete his Bachelor of Commerce degree. Cena has been a coach of high school speech and debate for five years. He coaches students privately and is the head coach of Crofton House School. Cena’s students have received numerous accolades including being featured on CBC National News, placing second at a world level tournament in the Czech Republic, and travelling to various places both inside and outside Canada to debate and speak. Cena has been booked for several private gigs, including a fundraising concert and a financial institution opening in Burnaby. He has also been selected as a finalist for the 2012 Central City Model Search, where he will be competing to become the face of Central City Mall in Surrey on October 6th from 1pm-3pm.

Hobbs: A Jewel in Kerrisdale’s Crown by Sarah Gordon

Brent Beattie welcomed me with a strong handshake and a huge smile which set the tone for a wonderful Hobbs experience. We sat outside on the shady patio which was a peaceful haven. The rooftop is covered with wisteria, which he was in the process of cutting back upon my arrival. Tom Hobbs opened his original Kerrisdale business, Thomas Hobbs Florist, in 1975. He met partner Brent Beattie in 1981 and in 1986 they opened the Well-Furnished Garden which was located on West Boulevard. After three years they closed the business. They had a vision to open Hobbs, and had their eyes on the former home of Superior Produce, located next door to Thomas Hobbs Florist. They expressed interest in the retail space, should the day come that the business cease operating. It did, and for 23 years Hobbs has been enjoying this spot on W. 41st Avenue. For a short time Brent Beattie and Tom Hobbs were running the florist and Hobbs simultaneously, however they sold Thomas Hobbs Florist fifteen years ago and turned their

attention to Southlands Nursery which opened in 1991. They felt three businesses was simply too many. Hobbs is what Brent Beattie refers to as a “personal point of view store.” Inside this treasure trove you will find items that have been selectively chosen for the customers who love and support this business. They are very grateful for their loyal clients who are a combination of locals and others from further afield including West Vancouver, Langley, Delta, Tsawwassen, and the United States. The merchandise is original and eclectic. When they opened the store they were trail blazers and it is apparent that this is still very much the case. This shop is unique, independent, and far from generic. It has a European feel and exudes tastefulness. You will find everything from Vietri Italian china and glassware which is stylish, casual and is a quality product (and also happens to be their top seller). In nooks and crannies you will find cook books and other assorted original books, Cavallini and Co. rubber stamps, baby gifts,

candles, picture frames, door mats, pillows, vases, linen, and this list barely scratches the surface. Hobbs merchandise is frequently changing and you are bound to find something that has been selected by Brent Beattie and Tom Hobbs on their buying trips in Canada, Europe and the United States. Where do they get such exquisite taste? Their attraction to the eclectic is a reflection of their personalities, and the merchandise that they sell has evolved as they themselves have evolved. Brent Beattie told me that they have “symbiotic and complementary interests” which certainly must help on buying trips. Their three staff members, Monique Hanna, Charo Navarro and Marty Van Kessel, have all been with the business for a long time and know the customers well. Marty Van Kessel is responsible for some of the amazing window displays and also does much of the work to transform Hobbs for the holiday season. Tom Hobbs enjoys creating displays and it is these special touches throughout the store that draw your eye to the merchandise. I was captivated by the beauty of a full scale bird bath filled with bird egg soaps perched on top of nesting material. Small retailers are fighting a number of challenges with online shopping and cross border shopping being two of the largest threats. It is a great concern to many independent shops. Brent Beattie says that shopping is a “tactile experience” and that objects need to be seen and held to truly
appreciate what you are buying. Ardent supporters of independent stores, and willing to take a stance, Brent Beattie and Tom Hobbs have posted chalkboards in the shop listing businesses that have disappeared from Kerrisdale and encourage people to “support independent retailers before we’re all gone.” The absolute shame is that if we do not support these one of a kind businesses that make Kerrisdale village unique, all that will be left is chains and big box stores. Brent Beattie and Tom Hobbs are originally from Winnipeg, however they met in Vancouver while picking up terra cotta pots for a gallery show. They have two properties, a farm in Langley and a condo in Vancouver. They enjoy their time in both places which couldn’t be more diverse from one another. Brent Beattie appreciates having their business situated in this village. He thinks Kerrisdale is charming, and likes the particular block where the shop is located and notes how the brick sidewalk exudes a charm of its own. He enjoys greeting people on the street, and finds the community to be dynamic, personal and friendly. Between their two businesses, Brent Beattie and Tom Hobbs work seven days a week, and when I expressed concern, Brent Beattie told me not to feel sorry for them in the slightest. Secret Garden Tea Company Where Tea is an Experience by Sarah Gordon

It is no secret that the Secret Garden Tea Company has been a favourite spot to sit and relax since it opened in October 1995. During this time the Secret Garden has served countless pots of tea along with miniature pastries, sweets, scones and sandwiches while creating lasting memories for its customers. Grandmothers typically offer many wonderful words of wisdom, and it is in large part due to Kathy Wyder’s grandmother, Gammy Bentall, that the Secret Garden planted its roots in Kerrisdale. She often mentioned that there was no place to go for tea in the neighbourhood, so Kathy Wyder and her former business partner, Andrea Wadman, set out to fill this void. Within months the business opened, her grandmother’s dream was fulfilled, and tea was served. How did Gammy Bentall react? She was so thrilled that she would stand outside and invite people to come into the establishment. Kathy Wyder came from a background in catering and restaurants. With this past

experience she manages the “big picture” for the business including development, packaging, purchasing and donation requests. In 2000, after five years with the business, Andrea Wadman left to concentrate on her family full-time. Erin Wyder joined the Secret Garden team in 1999 after completing Pacific Culinary School. She shared a family tradition of afternoon tea with her own grandmother Nan, which made her feel right at home. Originally she worked in the kitchen but now oversees the day to day operations. In 2002 she became the new co-owner of the business with Kathy Wyder. Because they share a common last name many people think that they are actual sisters, in fact they are sisters-in-law as Erin Wyder is married to Kathy’s brother John. With over 50 selections of tea to choose from (black, herbal and decaffeinated) their top sellers include Creamy Earl Grey, Buckingham Palace and Secret Garden’s Secret. One male customer comes for lunch every day, while another customer visits each morning during the summer and treats the Secret Garden like a second home. For the last seventeen years another customer has stopped by after work for tea and quiet time. Erin Wyder and Kathy Wyder are deeply satisfied knowing that they have created an atmosphere that feels so comfortable.

Christmas is a busy and magical time at the Secret Garden. Special events take place throughout December including live music; the restaurant is dressed in holiday finery with greenery and twinkle lights, and of course festive baking. You will want to make this a destination to relax amidst the holiday bustle! It all begins at the top, and the sistersin-law exude a genuine chemistry and ease, so much so that they complete each other’s sentences. Although they have had many opportunities to expand the business, they say “small is beautiful”, and choose to focus on making their business a hands on experience. They describe the Secret Garden as a place that leaves people feeling better for having been there. There is an adage “where there is
