Avenue Eyecare: Healthy Eyes For Life Story by Sarah Gordon Photos by Sandra Steier Dr. Sherman Tung and Dr. Jessica Chang are the co-owners of Avenue Eyecare, a family friendly clinic on West 41st Avenue that offers a simple philosophy; they want to help their patients’ eyes stay healthy for life. Associate, Dr. Karen Lee, rounds out the optometrist team.

Avenue Eyecare opened in 2011 and has seen its client base grow steadily as more people discover the business. Drs. Tung and Chang were both born and raised in Vancouver and are very familiar with all of the city’s diverse neighbourhoods.

In 2010 when it came time to set up shop they determined Kerrisdale best suited their neighbourhood wish list. Extensive renovations took place to transform the storefront into a welcoming space that conveys a clean and modern West Coast feel.

This multilingual clinic is right at home in Kerrisdale with an array of languages spoken by the three optometrists including English, Cantonese, French and Mandarin.

Dr. Tung points out they have made a conscious effort to incorporate environmentally friendly features whenever possible such as recycled chairs in the waiting area and a beautiful tabletop made from reclaimed western maple. They have an electronic patient record system to avoid the overuse of paper in the office. In addition, wheelchairs are easily accommodated in all areas of the clinic.

Even if you don’t think you need eyeglasses it is a wise idea to visit an optometrist regularly to screen your eyes for a number of eye and systemic health diseases.

The spacious clinic is equipped with a pre-test room that offers state of the art equipment with cameras to screen patients for a number of eye diseases. A retinal camera takes pictures of the eyes and the autorefractor measures the shape of the eyeball while the autotonometer checks eye pressure for glaucoma.

The two exam rooms feature equipment such as the space age looking phoropter, which determines the exact vision correction needed for your individual eyes. The digital slit lamp allows the optometrist to look at the anterior structure of the eye. An electronic screen has replaced the old school wall chart; this is a wonderful tool for projecting images and videos for eye tests.

Services Plan at Avenue Eyecare. It is recommended children come in annually for an exam beginning with their first appointment as early six months old.

As children mature, but may not yet be reading, the optometrists have a number of tricks up their sleeves to test this age group including the use of animal images instead of letters. Children also enjoy the toy chest rewards following an appointment.

Computer vision syndrome is on the increase as more people, in particular children, prolong screen time use. As the past president of the B.C. Association of Optometrists, Dr. Tung has some valuable tips to share.

He suggests applying the 20/20/20 rule when using electronic devices. The rule of thumb is to follow every 20 minutes of screen time with a 20 second break while focussing your eyes 20 feet away. Parents will likely applaud Dr. Tung’s additional advice to spend at least 14 hours a week outdoors.

To maintain a lifetime of healthy vision adults between the ages of 19 to 64 should have their eyes checked every two years. 75% of vision loss is treatable or preventable if caught early. Just like children, seniors are also advised to have annual exams as changes in eyes accelerate as we age.

For example, one Avenue Eyecare patient accompanied his wife to an appointment and decided on the spur of the moment to have his eyes tested as well. Tests revealed his eye was bleeding inside, an indication that he had early diabetes.

Although sales of frames account for a portion of their business there is no pressure to make a purchase. Lenses are sent out to a lab with a quick one-week turn around. In addition to corrective eyeglasses the store carries prescription sports eyewear (snowboarding and swimming goggles), protective eyewear for job sites and prescription polarization sunglasses for UV protection.

Dr. Tung is very personable and admits that he really enjoys interacting with his patients.

He laughs when he reports his previous work in microbiology and immunology had little human contact.

The three optometrists and their staff are very proud of this community and actively take part in Kerrisdale Business Association (KBA) events including Kerrisdale Days and Carnival Days. Dr. Chang is a KBA board member.

Dr. Tung enjoys meeting patients while out shopping, and he is particularly fond of visits to Moore’s Bakery and Bean Brothers Cafe.

The Avenue Eyecare team has found a unique way to promote the nearby 4Cats Arts Studio and simultaneously add colour to the clinic’s walls by displaying works of art. Dr. Tung

Community outreach is also important and the three doctors like to visit schools and senior centres to discuss the importance of eye health.

Open Door Yoga:

Quiet the Mind and Refresh the Body Story by Sarah Gordon Photos submitted Sometimes you don’t choose a community; it chooses you. Such is the case with Open Door Yoga, a relatively new kid on the block in Kerrisdale.

Georgina Varveris explains the yoga studio’s Westside location was situated in the block where the Ridge Theatre stood. When the building was demolished it was time to find a new home. She and co-owner Hogan Poon polled their students to establish their preference and discovered the majority favoured Kerrisdale.

This worked out well, as there is a relative shortage of yoga studios in the neighbourhood. The business opened in January 2014 and has been attracting an increasing number of students who are interested in hatha yoga.

Open Door Yoga is found on the third floor of the building located beside the big Sequoia tree next to Shoppers Drug Mart. The space is airy with pale moss green walls, laminate flooring, high ceilings, large picture windows 26

and additional natural light streaming through a skylight.

Varveris says, “Open Door Yoga is very approachable and inviting. I would go here if I wasn’t already involved.”

This is a place to learn to relax your body in a non-competitive environment. She invites people to come in and give hatha, restorative, yin and power yoga classes a try. Although some people associate yoga with the fit 20-year-old crowd, at Open Door Yoga age, demographics and fitness levels vary.

She says, “Everyone can do yoga, and practice it safely.” Students are encouraged to work at their own level and are not pushed to go beyond their ability. Varveris points out, “It is all about coming back to your body and connecting with yourself again.”

With the three other locations taken into account, she describes Open Door Yoga as “A big studio with a small studio feel.”

Varveris and Poon went into partnership in 1999 when they met at teachers college.

Their first studio was located at Fraser Street and East 46th Avenue. As start up entrepreneurs they both kept working two jobs as they juggled teaching shifts at Open Door. Two years later their lease expired and while they were initially crushed to leave, they soon found it to be a blessing in disguise.

With the rapid growth of their new Main Street location they were forced out of their comfort zones of managing a small studio. At this time they left their jobs to teach yoga fulltime and subsequently the Commercial Street and second Main Street spaces opened.

“What I realized through this process is when we listen carefully life is always giving us direction and guidance,” Varveris says.

Today Open Door Yoga employees 32 teachers, 16 cleaners and has a client base of approximately 1,200 students. Students are welcome to attend any of the four locations.

What makes this business unique is the connection the teachers share with their students.

Prices are very fair and a variety of passes are available including an eight-week intro pass for only $99. Varveris explains the company’s vision is about commitment and not simply attending drop in classes, therefore they like to offer students affordable prices to ensure September 1 - November 15, 2015

they will make this exercise a regular part of their lives. The longer you commit, the more affordable it becomes.

Varveris confides yoga saved her life. Early on she was diagnosed with osteoporosis. She says, “I knew that was not going to be my sentence. I reevaluated my life and a big part of that was taking on yoga and starting Open Door.”

Not only has her bone density improved it has actually retreated from osteoporosis to osteopenia and as a postmenopausal woman she is still seeing bone improvement.

Varveris says, “To do what I love, what is healing to me, and to be able to offer it to others is the hugest reward.” She finds it very meaningful to cause a “ripple effect” in people’s busy lives by offering them stress reduction through yoga.

Co-Existing with Coyotes Coyotes are well adapted to urban environments and have made Vancouver their home since they first arrived in the 1980’s. Now they are a permanent fixture in the urban landscape, and can often be seen in parks, school grounds, golf courses and neighbourhoods of Vancouver. They are naturally afraid of people but they learn to be comfortable when they are not treated like wildlife, and can become aggressive.

With three simple actions, you can help reduce conflicts between people, pets and coyotes.

Be Big, Brave and Loud – if you see a coyote scare it, it is the most effective way to keep people, pets and coyotes safe. If you see a coyote while walking your small dog: Pick up your dog and yell “Go Away Coyote.” This alerts others nearby that there is a coyote and gives it a scare.

Never Feed – human food is not healthy for coyotes but like any dog, they will eat what you give to them.

Spread the Word – tell your neighbours about co-existing, put up posters in your neighbourhood, and report your coyote sightings
