Publisher’s Note As I write this message snowflakes are falling from the sky, like a gentle reminder that the holiday season is fast approaching.

Regardless of whether it is rainy or snowy, Kerrisdale village has an extra special sparkle during the holiday season. The business district is filled with independent businesses that go the extra mile; owners hand pick products for local customers, who they often know by name.

The beautifully decorated store windows add to the festive experience. Take time to slow down from your shopping and enjoy the displays. Judges from the Kerrisdale Business Association (KBA) will be out on December 6 to award the best-decorated window.

We also profile Legato Café. I received an email from a customer who told me owner Winnie Chow is a tea expert, a kind and delightful hostess, and is always ready with a genuine smile and an open ear. It’s a great place to sit and read, or converse with a friend.

Whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas or Kwanzaa, I wish you a wonderful festive season and a happy 2018.

Every weekend in December the KBA provides free horse drawn carriage rides, strolling musicians and visits from Santa. On December 17, strap on your skates as the KBA hosts “Gliding on Ice,” a free skate at Kerrisdale Arena.

This family run fine lingerie boutique has been a fixture in the village for fifty-three years and is a wonderful spot to choose a gift or treat yourself to something special.

Currans of Kerrisdale: Fifty-Three Years of Fine Lingerie Story by Sarah Gordon

There is something charmingly European about the exterior of Currans of Kerrisdale.

The building is designed with a large clock inset above the door, combined with a mansard roof, dormer windows and petite balconies, which creates a small scale Parisian feeling to the structure. Inside the 30-year-old building the store is stocked with beautiful lingerie from Europe and Canada.

Currans of Kerrisdale dates back to 1964 when Jenny Currans, the original owner, established the business across the street where the Royal Bank now stands. She operated the lingerie shop and eventually sold it to her niece Cecile Bartussek in 1990.

During her ownership she shifted the business across the street to its current location.

In 2000 Maria Bastone joined Currans as an employee and in 2012 she was thrilled to purchase the shop.

Maria laughs when asked what she did prior to working at Currans. She was an ICBC employee but after spotting a help wanted sign in the lingerie store’s window she began her journey into the world of retail. She was familiar with the store, as the Bastone family has resided in Kerrisdale for many years.

Maria’s daughter Michelle Bastone is also actively involved with Currans of Kerrisdale.

The mother and daughter duo are a delightful team who complete each other’s sentences and have a wonderful chemistry.

Initially Michelle managed the website and marketing until earlier this year when she became more actively involved on the front end; she can now be found in the shop where she and Maria split their time. Maria enjoys ordering products while Michelle contributes her background as a former fashion sales rep to source new products. She also draws from her early experience working at The Bay’s lingerie department.

Michelle Bastone In addition to the mother and daughter team, Maria’s sister Rita Out is also part of the family business. She works part-time and is responsible for creating the eye-catching window displays.

Sleepwear by Miss B.E.E. Designs is made locally in Vancouver. These colourful, fun and feminine garments are designed with a contemporary twist on classic, ageless designs. Najerika is a Montreal based company, which produces 100% Canadian made lingerie and specializes in pretty lingerie, sleepwear and loungewear.

Some of the shop’s top sellers include Wacoal, a company known for designing exceptional lingerie that combines great fit

and function with design. Chantelle is a world leader in French lingerie with over 130 years of expertise in creating elegant apparel.

Belgian company Marie Jo makes flirty and fun bras with adorable shoulder straps – think daisies and circles.

Hanky Panky is sought after for its lacy panty and camisole collection. Janira shape wear can help you drop one dress size or even more; this underwear is designed to fit all your needs – and curves!

While Currans of Kerrisdale’s merchandise is mainly for women they also carry SAXX underwear for men. Company owner Trent Kitsch from Kelowna is a former baseball player who was looking for more comfortable underwear. Working with a seamstress and designer he came up with the patented SAXX technology to revolutionize men’s underwear.

Maria and Michelle mention that the SAXX line is conveniently displayed at the front of the store so men can pop in quickly without feeling awkward, and it is also a popular item that female clients pick up as gifts for their partners. Currans also recently introduced Sleepwalker pyjama pant collection.

Legato Café:

A Home Away From Home Story by Sarah Gordon Photos by Sandra Steier Coffee loving Kerrisdale residents all have their favourite spots to hang out and sip a cup of java. Customers of Legato Café are extremely loyal to their coffee shop and will often peek in the window to see if owner Winnie Chow is working; they have also been known to call her cell phone if she isn’t there to ensure all is well.

Legato Café is a place where you don’t have to yell across the table to be heard while you drink your latte. Winnie says, “It’s a quieter coffee house. People feel at home here.”

Winnie feels the Italian word legato, which

means ‘smooth and connected’ suits the restaurant’s gentle atmosphere and staff.

Legato Café is known for its friendly service.

Winnie says, “I like talking to my customers.”

Early rising seniors are often the first to visit the coffee shop where they will sit with a newspaper and enjoy breakfast. Office workers pick up a quick meal on the go.

Students are appreciative of the quiet surroundings and Winnie’s willingness to allow them to work on their laptops while they dine. At the same time, she points out they are very respectful if their table is needed for another patron’s use.

Guests order their beverages and food at the counter, however repeat customers will often seat themselves at a table; this is a signal that they would like their regular order and Winnie has a great memory for these details.

Winnie worked at the café while she attended UBC. Five years ago the former owner chose to sell the established business when the building was for sale. Winnie jumped at the chance to purchase the cafe, although it meant finding a new location. It also meant diverting from her degree in forest operations although her minor in commerce has proved to be very useful.

The current space required a major renovation; Winnie had the space gutted and creatively reused the display cases and furniture. With a laugh she recalls questioning how she pulled it off as the purchase of Legato Café coincided with the final critical months of completing her university degree.

This hard working business owner opens the shop at 7:00 a.m. most days (on Sundays and holidays the café opens at 8:00 a.m.) and stays open until 8:00 p.m.

Breakfast and lunch are served all day.

In addition to running the business six days a week Winnie also tutors high school students each evening after work. She explains, “I am driven to work hard now so I won’t have to work so hard later in life. “

A professional baker creates all of the baked goods in house. Winnie has been working alongside him, as she wants to learn this side of the business too. In addition to baking for their needs they also supply other restaurants.

Additionally, catering is offered and to date the café has provided sandwiches and baked goods for functions such as church meetings, funerals and seniors’ events.

Those with a weakness for sweet things will easily be satisfied with the wide selection of goodies. Some of the temptations include apple strudel, carrot cake, cheesecake, cookies, croissants, date squares, a variety of loaves (banana, chocolate banana, lemon), pecan tarts and a delicious tiramisu.

Sandwiches are made fresh every morning, grab and go style, and all soups are made in house. Lavazza Italian coffee is used to make espresso beverages. Local roaster Crown Coffee Company beans are used for brew coffees.

Winnie says, “Legato Café feels like home.”

Winnie mentions that Christmas is one of her favourite holidays. She decorates a Christmas tree and places it in the front window. As well, she hangs stockings with her loyal customers’ names on them.

Several times a year artists’ works are exhibited at Legato Café. Valerie Bremmer’s paintings are currently on display and are available for sale.

What makes this business special? Winnie laughs and replies, “People say it’s me.”

One of the most rewarding parts of her job is seeing customers leave smiling.” Winnie concludes, “It makes me happy knowing I have made someone’s day and relieved some of their stress.”
