Every weekend in December the Kerrisdale Business Association (KBA) provides free horse drawn carriage rides, strolling musicians and visits from Santa and his elf.

On December 20, strap on your skates as the KBA hosts “Gliding on Ice,” a free skate at Kerrisdale Arena.

Part of the festive experience is admiring the beautifully decorated store windows. Judges from the KBA will be out on December 9 to award the best-decorated window.

On the cover we feature Blake & Riley business owner Hey-Sun Baek and her children, the namesakes behind this new boutique.

Read about this “family concept store” which is very popular in Scandinavia and some of Asia’s forward-leaning metropolises but is relatively new to Canada.

In this issue we also profile Crofton Manor, which has been part of the community for over 40 years. This residence offers seniors a complete continuum of care. The elegant environment, caring staff and excellent programming make residents feel at home the moment they move in.

Blake & Riley: A Family

Business With an International Flair Story by Sarah Gordon Photos by Sandra Steier Earlier this year a new boutique sprouted up on West 41st Avenue next door to Caffe Artigiano. Hey-Sun Baek and her husband Rich Scott-Ashe are the owners of Blake & Riley, a business they dreamed of opening for years.

The couple describes Blake & Riley as “a whole-family concept that’s growing popular in Scandinavia and some of Asia’s forwardleaning metropolises but is relatively new to Canada.”

They started out focusing on children’s fashion and home décor, but after receiving requests from clients who they describe as “design-savvy women looking for something new,” they expanded to include mommy fashions.

You will find bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room and even baking products at Blake & Riley. That is what they mean by a whole family concept and it is what sets this store apart from others.

Hey-Sun Baek Naming the shop after their two little boys (ages 3 and 5) seemed like a natural fit. Baek says, “We want to bring as much warmth and happiness to our clients’ homes as our kids have added to ours.”

Baek is originally from Korea and this is where the couple met when Scott-Ashe was living and working in the country. Her background is in children’s fashion and she has a natural gift for sourcing, buying and design while her husband assists behind-the-scenes with marketing and he jokes, janitorial duties.

surrounding areas for the best location. In the end, Kerrisdale was the best fit for many reasons. Baek explains, “The neighbourhood is experiencing a revival that we wanted to be a part of. And some of Vancouver’s best brands got their start here, like Aritzia, Blue Ruby and Faubourg, so it can’t hurt to follow that tradition.”

As first time business owners they have been made to feel right at home by customers and fellow merchants. Baek says, “Our neighbours have been eager to help us as we get off the ground and to share the secrets of doing business here.”

Blake & Riley takes pride in carrying difficult to find, iconic Scandinavian décor brands like Ferm Living, Muuto and String.

Amongst the treasures you will find oversized animal heads (think trophy heads but in a comical, soft and fuzzy children’s bedroom sort of way)! They include an elephant, bear, moose, tiger, unicorn and zebra. These friendly show stealing pieces almost cry out look at me as soon as you walk into the store.

According to Baek, fashion moves at breakneck speed in Seoul, where she sources the clothing. She says, “We work very hard to bring that dynamism to Vancouver, bringing in only a few of each piece to ensure that everything we have is special.”

Crofton Manor is part of the Revera family, one of North America’s leading and most trusted providers of seniors’ accommodation, care and services for over 50 years in over 200 locations. Crofton Manor is the company’s largest facility in western Canada with 100 independent living suites and 87 private pay complex care suites.

Executive Director Shawn Ouellette graciously took time from his busy schedule to discuss the unique services available.

Ouellette’s experience as a nurse practitioner dovetails nicely with his role as executive director. He joined Crofton Manor’s staff two 18

years ago and the residents are very fond of him. John Ellis, Crofton’s longest resident says, “Shawn is running a very good show here.” Based on his attentive interaction with the residents it is apparent he is passionate about his work.

What makes Crofton Manor stand out is the higher than average staffing ratios and large suites. The expansive living quarters accommodate independent living suites on one side and complex care suites on the other.

Ann Den Hertog and her husband moved to Crofton Manor at the beginning of 2015. She is enjoying life at Crofton Manor and their independent living suite. She was initially attracted to the gardens, the light and the spacious, well-designed floor plan. Den Hertog has warm words of appreciation for the staff and other residents and is a big fan of the meals. She laughs when she reports, “The food is so good I found myself eating more and had to cut back.”

The highly praised menu changes several times a year. There is even a wine club and residents can help select wines they would like to see on the menu. A card room for playing cards, bridge and Scrabble, a media room decorated with nostalgic movie posters, and a spacious, bright lounge adorned with beautiful artwork create the feeling of an elegant resort.

While the average age at Crofton Manor is 86, some residents are as young as their late 60s. Others, like John Ellis, have celebrated their 100th birthday on site. He has lived independently for 16 years. When asked how he enjoys living at Crofton Manor he says, “It is the closest thing to paradise I will experience in my lifetime.”

Both charming and youthful, Ellis appears 20 years younger than his age. He is an active community member.

He mentions that he spearheaded Crofton’s glee club, as he believes in plenty of singing and laughter. In addition, he brainstormed the very popular laughter yoga class.

Ellis enjoys being able to pop out on his electric scooter to visit local shops. He also likes to utilize Crofton’s concierge driver service to take him on errands.

The complex care side of Crofton Manor offers health care, medication administration, bathing and dressing and companion services around the clock.

One hour each day at Crofton Manor is dedicated to entertainment choices, whether it is a visit from a guest, a movie or music.

Legendary local musician Dal Richards makes an annual appearance and his concerts are always met with with great response.

Recreational opportunities include a daily Rev it up program, a well-equipped gym, yoga and tai chi classes.

Residents who reside on the patio level have the option to tend to their own garden beds.

Or as Den Hertog discovered, she had her fill of gardening over the years and enjoys leaving that job to the gardeners.

Family involvement is always welcome and encouraged at Crofton Manor. Guest suites are available for overnight stays.

While some residents leave to visit their families on Christmas Day, Crofton Manor also sees a large number of visitors who come to enjoy the day and partake in the very popular festive dinner.

The holidays are a special time at the residence.

Twelve professionally decorated trees are placed throughout the complex.

Residents are also invited to decorate a special tree and adorn the door to their room with seasonal décor.

In addition, carollers and other performers provide seasonal entertainment.

For those residents who are not able to make it out to the shops, local vendors come to visit and bring everything from Purdy’s Chocolates, to clothing, shoes and gift cards.
