Every weekend in December the Kerrisdale Business Association (KBA) provides free horse drawn carriage rides, strolling musicians and visits from Santa and his elf. On December 21 the KBA hosts “Gliding on Ice,” a free skate at Kerrisdale Arena.

Part of the holiday shopping experience is admiring the beautifully decorated store windows. Judges of the KBA will be out in early December awarding the business with the best-decorated window. On the cover, long-time Kerrisdale resident, Marie Palla,

stops to shop at Thomas Hobbs Florist, the winner of last year’s contest.

In this issue we profile Avenue Grill. The restaurant opened in 1929 and has operated continuously for 85 years. Read about Sasha Mirkovic who is both the chef and co-owner of Avenue Grill. His girlfriend and business partner, Zara Sovani, have the pleasure of being the “facilitators” of this Vancouver legacy.

Forero’s Bags and Luggage: For All Your Travel Needs

Mabel (pronounced Ma-belle) Forero, owner of Forero’s Bags and Luggage, is originally from Bogota, Colombia. It was there that she met her Vancouver born husband, Hugh Rose. Forero moved to Canada in 1999 and the couple married several years later.

Upon arriving in Vancouver Forero found the city to be beautiful, multicultural and full of friendly and welcoming people. She says, “It was nice to see how people help each other.

I appreciate how trustworthy and organized Canadians can be.”

She misses aspects of her homeland such as Colombians’ lively and joyful spirits, and the sound of Latin music wherever you go.

Forero points out, “You don’t need a special occasion to celebrate or get together with friends and family.”

Forero became involved in retail in her late 10

teens and subsequently did her postgraduate studies in business administration. Prior to meeting Rose she managed leather goods stores in Colombia. It was a natural fit for Forero to venture into opening her own business in February 2010, especially as it piggybacked nicely with her husband’s busy career in wholesaling luggage.

The Kerrisdale storefront was formerly a franchise luggage store and when it closed down Forero seized the opportunity to open her independent business.

Forero’s Bags and Luggage is one of four shops in B.C. to sell the well-established Rimowa luggage line that originated in Cologne, Germany in 1898. If you purchase Rimowa you can proudly wave your Canadian flag as the company operates a manufacturing plant in Cambridge, Ontario.

Are you attracted to hard-shelled or softsided luggage? Hard-sided rolling uprights are certainly growing in popularity although in Asia they have been the rage for a number of years. Three staff members (Scott Didick, Yvonne Fung and Sylvaine Sirois) work alongside Forero. She says it helps to be versatile in ethnically diverse Kerrisdale and between herself and her staff Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin and French are spoken.

The store is known for its large selection of leather goods, briefcases and purses.

Baggallini is a line of bags that is designed by flight attendants and approved by travellers.

The cross body shoulder bags are a safe choice for keeping your valuables close to you.

Travelon makes a range of anti-theft bags.

If you would like to learn how to pack more efficiently, and perhaps pare down to a carry on bag only, the shop will be offering a packing demo in the new year.

Accidents can happen. If the bag you purchased from Forero’s is damaged on holiday they will be happy to assist with repairs. Bring the bag to the shop and avoid having to dealing directly with the luggage company. They will arrange for repairs and have your bag up and running again.

Forero takes great pride in the excellent customer service offered at her shop.

Avenue Grill:

85 Years Old and Going Strong

The illuminated sign with its distinct pink cursive writing and green arrow pointing down invites you to step inside the door. Neon enthusiasts from across the continent are familiar with the sign, which was installed in the 1950s, and has been included in a North American neon encyclopaedia. The restaurant opened in 1929 and has operated continuously for 85 years.

The couple owes their relationship to the restaurant where they met when they worked as servers. They have been together for 10 years and purchased the business seven years ago. Mirkovic approached his employer and former owner, Harvey Sabre, and expressed interest in purchasing the business, and the rest is history.

It is one of Kerrisdale’s oldest structures, dating back to the turn of the 20th century.

Mirkovic is originally from Knin, a small town in Serbia. He says he knew by the age of eight that he wanted to work in the hospitality industry. His mentor was his uncle who worked at a five star hotel in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Mirkovic recalls being suitably impressed when a cocktail created by his uncle placed second in a world championship for bartenders.

Vancouver after his brother persuaded him to come and give life in this great city a try.

It didn’t take long before Mirkovic realized that he wanted to stay permanently. He began working in the service industry, which eventually led him to the Avenue Grill.

When Mirkovic purchased the business he ensured some of the time honoured staples remained while introducing some of his Eastern European heritage, such as goulash, to the menu. While Mirkovic is busy in the kitchen he says Sovani plays such an instrumental role in the business that “she is pretty much everything.”

When asked how he would describe Avenue Grill’s menu, he says it is a marriage of Mediterranean, old time favourites and Northwest cuisine.

Some of the restaurants most popular dishes include lamb Osso Buco, pecan breaded chicken, and many of the egg dishes on the brunch menu including Eggs Blackstone (poached eggs, bacon, grilled tomato and hollandaise sauce) and Eggs Benedict. In addition, diners can enjoy an array of daily specials listed on the blackboard.

Avenue Grill unique is the fact that it is a neighbourhood fixture.

Avenue Grill has endured decades of changes in Vancouver. The restaurant has survived recessions, changes in ownership, and most impressively, it has been open eight decades, an astonishing accomplishment when some restaurants fold in the first few years of operating. Locals consider it to be their own; they see the restaurant as an extension of their dining table. Some clients are so loyal that Mirkovic and Sovani will give them a call if they haven’t seen them recently to make sure all is well.

As for Mirkovic’s role as chef and owner, he says, “For me, dining is a very intimate setting.

Through human history we have gathered around tables and shared meals with family members and friends. So I take extra care to ensure that my customers experience and take away that feeling, like they have just had dinner at their favorite aunt’s or grandma’s place, and they can’t wait to visit again.”

The busy restaurant employs 15 part-time servers and bussers, along with two chefs who work alongside Mirkovic in the kitchen.

There are countless stories connected with Avenue Grill. Mirkovic says customers frequently share memories of days gone by.

In the 1930s locals would cluster around the restaurant’s radio to hear news stories from Europe. A customer recalls sitting at a bar stool and drinking a milkshake when he heard Pearl Harbour had been bombed.

While the restaurant’s footprint has not altered, the interior has seen plenty of design changes over the years. At one stage Avenue Grill was outfitted with jukeboxes, booths and a soda fountain. It evolved to become what it is today, fine casual dining.

Mirkovic always comes back to the fact that he is a steward of this Kerrisdale legacy.

The dedicated business owner endeavours to give guests as much of a personal experience as possible, and makes every effort to circulate on the floor and greet people.

Mirkovic confesses that he always wanted to be a performer. He sang in a choir, and participated in drama at school, however he never pursued a career on stage. Instead he has found a 17-table stage at Avenue Grill and he couldn’t be happier. He says that on a difficult day there is no better place to be than at work where his spirit can instantly be lifted, as he thrives on interacting with customers.

With the holiday season fast approaching now is the time to book your Christmas party. If you are planning to dine at Avenue Grill over the holidays the menu will reflect the season (roasts and other hearty comfort food). Mirkovic and Sovani enjoy getting in the Christmas spirit so don’t be surprised if carollers drop in while you are enjoying brunch!

Avenue Grill is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In addition, you can enjoy brunch on weekends and holidays. The business only closes one day a year, on December 25.
