On the cover is James Iranzad who grew up in the Kerrisdale area and owns Pizzeria Bufala with his friend and business partner Josh Pape. Bufala opened in 2014 and was born out of a passion for pizza and the belief that all communities need a gathering place.

Kerrisdale is turning 112 years old and in celebration the Kerrisdale Business Association is hosting its annual Kerrisdale Days on September 8 and 9. Come out and enjoy free horse drawn carriage rides, great sidewalk sales, clowning, face-painting, inflatable slides, live music and Moore’s Bakery’s super sized birthday cake. May the force be with you as Elm Park transforms into an outdoor movie theatre for a showing of “Star Wars.” Kerrisdale Idol contest returns for its 14th year and will be held on September 9 — if you’ve got the voice, consider entering! The talented winner will receive $1,000.

Kerrisdale Antiques Fair takes place over the Labour Day long weekend before Kerrisdale Arena transforms back into an ice rink. The Kerrisdale Business Association encourages you to dress up for the annual free Halloween Skate on October 29. Attention

In this issue we introduce you to the Academy of Modern Art, a new business at W. 41st Avenue on the corner of Balsam Street. The Academy’s team of professionals train and guide art students on their path to top art and design post secondary programs.

We say goodbye to the businesses lost in the fire (see p. 35). We also say goodbye to Kerfoot Burroughs Law Firm and Anti-Aging Medical Clinic; both businesses have relocated their offices outside of Kerrisdale.

Pizzeria Bufala:

A Neighbourhood Gathering Place Story by Sarah Gordon Photos by Sandra Steier From the exterior, Pizzeria Bufala is aesthetically eye-catching. Impressively, the front window is half full of wine corks which raises the question, just how many are in there?

Indoors, the bright open space has a West Coast meets Italy feel with wood details and ledges filled with collections of olives and olive oil. The room features booths around the perimeter to cozy up in and two long communal centre tables with string lights overhead, conjuring up thoughts of dining outdoors on a warm night as you gather with a group of friends to feast, laugh and raise a glass.

Commenting on his friendship with Josh, James says, “We met through the industry and clicked. We became fast friends.”

James’ excitement and passion for what he does is obvious. He mentions how fulfilling it is to operate a variety of unique restaurants and points out the creative element always keeps things interesting.

James Iranzad and Josh Pape are the industrious business partners behind Bufala, which has been part of the community since 2014.

“With Bufala we wanted to offer something contemporary, something a little unexpected.

The design brings a clean, fresh atmosphere.

I love this corner restaurant with natural light overlooking the greenery of West Boulevard which is quintessential Kerrisdale,” James remarks.

Their company Gooseneck Hospitality operates two other very distinct restaurants in Vancouver (Lucky Taco in Kitsilano and Wildebeest in Gastown). Next up to bat is Bells & Whistles, opening in September in East Vancouver’s Fraserhood district.

As owners/operators they support the establishments from the business side. James describes them as, “Passionate eaters and passionate cooks at home.” James oversees operations (he admits to spending a lot of time on the phone), while Josh spends his

time hands on at all of the restaurants. He was originally a bartender and worked at prestigious restaurants; he has earned numerous accolades including bartender of the year.

James and Josh both grew up in the Kerrisdale area. James says, “I always had a fantasy about opening a restaurant here and Kerrisdale has embraced Bufala.”

Bufala was born out of a passion for pizza and the belief that all communities need a gathering place.

Fresh, made from scratch pizzas in the traditional Napolitana style take centre stage. Blistered to perfection in an 800-degree stone oven, James describes the pizzas as “Not fussy. We let the ingredients speak for themselves.”

The menu rotates throughout the year but you can always count on finding a half a dozen classic pizzas and another six options with a contemporary twist. For example, on the summer menu sausage pairs with zucchini ribbons.

The twelve-inch pizzas slice into six pieces and share beautifully. Intended as a family experience, order a few and sample different tastes. “We encourage sharing. Pizza brings out the best in people. Everyone likes pizza,” James says with a smile.

Currently James’ favourite menu items are the Calabria pizza with spicy sausage, red peppers, garlic, manchego, and marinara.

To top it off he likes to add white anchovies. He mentions the salads are also beautiful and he loves Bufala’s meatballs.

He and Josh like to support local growers. “Due to the unseasonal wet and late spring everything is late this year. Tomatoes will still be amazing in September and the Caprese salad is not to be missed,” James says. This highlight of September features buffalo milk mozarella, heirloom tomatoes, fresh basil and olive oil with flaky sea salt.

“The wine and beer selection is excellent — we are so proud of it.”

“Josh’s cocktail menu is amazing — he puts so much thought into it,” he says. Bufala serves beer brewed by friends in East Vancouver, so you can count on it being fresh and tasty. James adds, “We like to support our community. The wine list is equally well considered and is appropriate for the menu.”

Italian wines are the star attraction to marry with the Napolitana pizzas.

Patrons often visit once or twice a week.

Some come from the neighbourhood, while others come from across Metro Vancouver to experience the restaurant that took home gold in Vancouver’s Magazine’s 27th Annual Restaurant Awards in the category of Best Pizzeria.

James concludes, “Kerrisdale has embraced our restaurant and it’s an honour we do not take for granted. We are happy to be part of the community.”

Academy of Modern Art: Kerrisdale’s Art Preparatory Academy Story by Sarah Gordon

Last December during the numerous winter snowstorms a creative new business sprung up in Kerrisdale.

Long time friends Maggie Li and Jade Su, owners and founders of Academy of Modern Art (AOMA), had been searching to find the perfect spot to locate their new business.

The warm and enthusiatic business partners are originally from the beautiful coastal city Hangzhou, China where the 2016 G20 Summit was held. Maggie immigrated to Canada in 2004 and Jade came to the country in 2012.

“Opening an art school was our dream.” Maggie Li Maggie lives in Kerrisdale. She knew basing AOMA in this academic oriented neighbourhood near UBC and so many 16

excellent primary and secondary schools would be a perfect fit. Maggie immediately contacted Jade when she discovered the corner location at West 41st Avenue and Balsam Street. They were drawn to the abundance of natural light and the layout.

Jade reports with a smile, “People regularly pop open the door to take a peek to find out what goes on inside.”

“We train and guide passionate art students on their path to top art and design post secondary programs across North America and Europe. Our instructors include university professors, designers, artists and curators.

There is nothing else like it in the city,“ Jade says.

Maggie is responsible for business operations while Jade is the director of art and also teaches.

Maggie laughs when she says, “AOMA has become like my second home.” It is hard to believe that the business has been open less than a year with the amount the pair has accomplished.

AOMA’s vision is to be Vancouver’s premier art preparatory academy.

What makes the Academy special is its calibre of instructors. Each is an expert in his or her field, and it is a wonderful opportunity for young people to learn from professionals.

In addition, class sizes are small with a maximum of eight students.

The Mini Arts program and the Portfolio program coexist and enhance one another.

Mini Arts sets the foundation while Portfolio focus on creation and design. Students are able to begin with Mini Arts and eventually move on to studio if they wish to pursue preparation for fine arts or design schools. If a student wishes to take Portfolio but lacks fundamentals, they can improve through Mini Arts classes.

The Mini Arts program offers group classes for children ages six and up. Greg Stainton teaches the Fun Cartoon Characters class (ages 6 to 12) and introduces children to the art of cartoon drawing skills and techniques in the style of Disney and North American animation. Students learn to construct bodies from head to toe and draw human characters, animals and robots — the possibilities are endless!

Instructor Jonathan Holland teaches drawing and painting (ages 9 and up). Creativity is explored through a variety of sketching techniques as well as the basic elements of

how to draw in a friendly and supportive environment.

Andrew McDermott teaches life drawing classes (ages 13 and up). Students gain an increased understanding of the complexities of anatomy and proportion as it relates to visual art.

Architect Nicholas Waissbluth teaches two youth architecture classes. Architecture Model Making (ages 9 to 12) is an introduction to architecture through hands on 3D modelling exercises. From skyscrapers to houses, students explore geometry, form and space.

Architecture and the City (ages 13 and up) looks at how buildings relate to each other and to the people that use them. Working within the AOMA studio as well outdoors in the Kerrisdale community, students delve into architecture through drawing and physical modelling exercises.

Both Andrew McDermott and Jonathan Holland also teach Acrylic Techniques classes to young artists ages 13 and up.

class taught by Huang Binbin. Nature themes inspire students as they learn the art of drawing, painting techniques and create work a work in either oil or acrylic.

A vital member of AOMA’s team is Master of Architecture (UBC) student Arkgo Chen who has been with the Academy since it opened.

His key role is to assist the team of Portfolio experts and he also provides valuable administrative assistance.

The Academy offers professional guidance to students preparing portfolios to accompany their post secondary school applications.

A huge feather in the cap of Kerrisdale’s new art academy, one of their portfolio students received an invitation to study at Cornell University’s top ranked College of Architecture, Art and Planning.

Jade’s extensive experience as a fashion designer and university professor in China comes into play as she guides portfolio students on the road to successful applications along with the team of portfolio instructors who also teach Mini Arts classes.

University Planning range from architecture to fashion design, industrial design and digital media.

An exhibition in September will showcase students’ artwork. This is a wonderful opportunity for the public to drop in and see what takes place in the vibrant studio.

Ultimately, the goal of AOMA is to have fun in an academic setting while offering students the opportunity to shoot for the stars and attain their artistic dreams. In turn, Maggie and Jade are sharing their passion and dream and they couldn’t be happier.

Kirkland Metal Shop Ltd A Family Business Story by Christa Andersen

Christa Andersen, established 1984. The year I became a daughter, a sister, and future employee of Kirkland Metal Shop.

followed. Years later, the torch would be passed and the Andersen family would continue the Kerrisdale legacy.

Barney and Nancy Andersen (aka my heroes…aka my bosses) are the definition of grit, perseverance and love. They didn’t just pass on these qualities to their four children; they poured every ounce of it into their business and community.

Nancy and Barney made their own mark in Vancouver’s history. They roamed the halls of Prince of Wales Secondary School, ice skated at Kerrisdale Arena, and grew up in Vancouver Specials. I consider them the OG’s (#GoogleIt) of Dunbar. For them Kirkland was never just a business opportunity, it was a dream, a chance to honour history while making a future.

I was too young to remember my dad and his one employee hauling furnaces from our garage to jobs. I was crawling between my mom’s feet as she ran the business from our kitchen table, crunching numbers on her word processor. But I do remember when they took their modest home based business and their unwavering passion and took over a historic and respected heating company.

As their daughter, their employee, and a Vancouverite to the core, I am never more proud than when I meet people and they say they know Kirkland Metal Shop. Better yet, when they tell me we’ve been in their house, serviced their furnace, installed their fireplace, and they know my dad! My favourite is; “Barney’s your dad?! Ah man, he’s awesome, he installed our furnace, that’s so cool!” It never gets old. The kid in me thinks, “Yep, my dad’s the coolest!” The adult

in me is so grateful to have worked in my family business for the last 13 years (not counting the years I only coloured on work orders and spun around on office chairs with my sister).
