Publisher’s Note Hello summer! The time has arrived to take full advantage of our glorious West Coast climate. Summer is synonymous with outdoor living combined with relaxation, whether you choose to dine on a restaurant patio, invite friends over, explore the neighbourhood by bike, or sit in your garden and appreciate the summer flowers and enjoy the bounty of your vegetable garden.

You may recognize our beautiful cover model Erin Shum, owner of She to Shic Boutique Beauty Lounge, photographed enjoying lunch on the patio of the newly named 41 West Restaurant (2279 West 41st Avenue). Read her story in this issue. Kerrisdale welcomes the 2013 Little League BC Provincial Championships at Elm Park from July 20 to 28. Kerrisdale Little League is thrilled to host this prestigious event and shares their story with Kerrisdale Insider. Hilary Feldman uncovers Kerrisdale’s wonderful preschools to help you decide where to enrol your little one this fall. Guest writer Michelle Addison shares her top summer fashion finds at Hill’s in Kerrisdale. Summer is a time for backyard barbecues. Pick up some fresh meat from Shaughnessy Fine Meats, fresh baked buns and dessert from Moore’s Bakery. West Coast Liquor Company has a good selection of wine, craft beer and premium spirits. To really wow your guests, order a custom plate from Benton Brothers Fine Cheese, or specialty chocolates from Gem Chocolates. Tune up your bike at West Point Cycles, pack a picnic and head to one of Kerrisdale’s many beautiful parks. Elm Park offers many recreational opportunities, including lawn bowling, tennis, and field sports. Fraser River Park is one of the most tranquil and inspiring spots in the area with large rolling lawns perfect for picnicking or flying a kite, and offers beautiful views of the Fraser River. With its quiet and shaded plaza, small lawn and children’s playground, Kerrisdale Centennial Park is a nice escape, while being conveniently located next to the Kerrisdale Community Centre. Malkin Park is a largely forested area that shelters a small field and playground.

Located on the banks of the Fraser River adjacent to Vancouver’s only remaining farmland, this golf course is a Vancouver treasure. The Kerrisdale Business Association brings back its annual Concerts Under the Clock on Saturday afternoons. August 17 is the annual Corn Festival. Kerrisdale has plenty of options to keep your kids busy this summer with swimming lessons at Kerrisdale Pool, the summer book club at Kerrisdale Library, classes at Oxford Learning, fun art classes at 4Cats Arts Studio or Cowboys and Angels, an indoor afternoon at Play Palace or an outdoor afternoon at Maple Grove Pool. On July 1st, put on your red and white t-shirt, wave a Canadian flag with pride, and celebrate Canada’s 146th birthday. If you are looking for parking, don’t forget the Kerrisdale Parkade located on Yew Street, just south of West 41st Avenue. This subterranean parking lot offers free 2 hour parking for Kerrisdale Village visitors in a safe, clean and well-lit environment. Relax, unwind and savour all the wonderful and unique moments of a Kerrisdale summer.

STYLE PICKS FOR SUMMER by Michelle Addison Mini Bio -Vancouver Style Maven Michelle Addison is a stylist with over a decade cultivating experience in the fashion and film industry. She has become one of Vancouver’s go-to experts for all things fashion related. Her ability to decipher trends, convey style, and trim closets down to the essential key pieces, led to a thriving personal styling career. Along with dressing local glamorous moms and chic businesswomen, Addison dresses A-list celebrities when they are in town, local television personalities, and is the in-house stylist on the Real Housewives of Vancouver. Summer is finally here. This season usually has my clients scrambling to get their wardrobes ready for the warm weather. Summer is packed with lots of social occasions, from brunch on sunny patios to chic escapes and decadent getaways that demand clothing with a casual vibe and a relaxed silhouette. One of my favourite boutiques is Hills of Kerrisdale. They have a rich style history spanning over three generations. Their
Michelle Addison on location at Hills of Kerrisdale Photos by Chris Thorn collection season after season truly reflects the casual chic vibe of Vancouver.
Hills carries some of my go-to brands for basics like Equipment, Rag & Bone, and James Perse. Investing in a few new key pieces that address the trends can instantly update your wardrobe. Graphic black and white is the season’s hottest trend. You can instantly boost your dramatic factor in classic black and white stripes. This graphic print is so easy on the eye. Maybe it is a French thing, but it is pretty fabulous and it actually works for everyone. Head to toe, vertical, horizontal, thin, thick, I love them all. Don’t believe what they say, that horizontal stripes make you look heavier.

In fact, they’re actually slimming. Throw on some colourful beaded necklaces or a bright neon yellow belt for a little punch and you are good to go. Shorts for summer and boots for winter. Right? Wrong! This look is everywhere among A-listers, and trend-setters, and I have been getting my clients to embrace the trend. Shorts are back, and if you have great legs, show them off. Try a pair of shorts like these by JBrand with a lovely ankle bootie by Rachel Comey. I finished the look with a great slouchy cross-body bag by local accessory designer Erin Templeton. Rock the new denim trends for the season with ease. On my list is the new boyfriend jean. Every girl should buy a pair in a light distressed wash. Although it is still a very relaxed silhouette, it is slimmer from the calf down than the boyfriend jean of seasons past, which makes it more flattering. I am also loving the denim vest for summer. Borrowed from the boys look, it is easy to wear with everything, and brings a touch of cool to what you already own. You also might want to add a great pair of denim cutoffs to your summer wardrobe if you haven’t got a pair. Instant festival chic.

Complete your look with an armful of brightly coloured friendship bracelets with tribal motifs. Aztec prints ruled the runways for spring and this is an easy way to incorporate the trend. Friendship bracelets are a tad
nostalgic, of the girlhood summer camp classic, but have received an edgy makeover. This boho-chic look is equally eye-catching for day or night, and is an easy way to incorporate playfulness into your look.

SHE TO SHIC BOUTIQUE BEAUTY LOUNGE: KERRISDALE’S ECO-FRIENDLY SPA by Sarah Gordon
photos by Sandra Steier
Erin Shum and her mother Betty Shum were well ahead of their time in 2009 when they opened She to Shic Boutique Beauty Lounge, Vancouver’s first natural and organic spa. Erin Shum says that over the last four years she has witnessed people becoming increasingly more concerned about how their choices impact the environment.
In the early 1990s Betty Shum opened a vegetarian restaurant and a vegetarian distribution market. As an adolescent Erin Shum had a health scare and she made the switch to a meat free diet. She had always appreciated nature and environment related studies and sought to merge these interests with her passion for beauty products and services. She and Betty Shum visualized She to Shic, something that they believed Vancouverites needed, and ventured into starting their own business. They sourced unique products that fit their passion for organic beauty services without jeopardizing sanitation. Erin Shum says, “At the end of the day, if you are going to have a pedicure, why not make a better choice by having one at an eco-friendly and organic spa?” She points out that their employees also benefit by working in a healthy environment where they do not inhale harmful noxious fumes.

She to Shic offers a variety of treatments from manicures and pedicures to hair blowouts, eco-friendly makeup applications (including bridal and grad makeup and hair services), threading and eyelash extensions while offering only organic products that do not contain formaldehydes, preservatives or dyes. Facials and massages were also recently introduced. Vegan nail polish is applied so you can have a healthy and ethical experience. What constitutes vegan nail polish, you may ask? Instead of using fish scales to create the sheen found in other polishes, the SpaRitual product line uses crushed rocks to create a metallic look. The spa uses Ola organic body scrubs and lotions that are made in Hawaii. Every ingredient used in these products is found in the tropics. With fragrances like passion fruit citrus, tropical smoothie, pineapple lime and coconut lemongrass, Ola promises the “soothing aromas will transport your mind, body and spirit to paradise.” Nail services run the gamut from express thirty-minute manicures or pedicures, to a luxurious fifty-minute deluxe treatment. Gel nail services are also available. Male clients can enjoy the Metro Man treatment for hands or feet (which includes a scented water soak, nail shape and buff, cuticle cleaning and lotion massage). For the little princesses in the crowd (age 12 and under) She to Shic offers manis and pedis with low odor, vegan nail polish. Your daughter can select her favourite scent for the organic soak and lotion massage. She to Shic is a wonderful place to host a birthday or bachelorette party. Erin Shum suggests considering a threading, mani and pedi party for bridal and baby showers.
Erin Shum describes Betty Shum as the “mother of the business.” She ensures She to Shic runs smoothly by overseeing the dayto-day operations. This includes everything from stocking up supplies to helping pick out the latest trends in nail polish colours, bringing snacks for the staff and ensuring the porcelain floors are spotless. At times Betty Shum plays the role of client, allowing She to Shic staff to test new techniques or perfect their current practices. Erin Shum admires her mom tremendously and credits her for always having been an active and hands on mother. Erin Shum says, “The first year after we opened She to Shic was a true test of the strength and dynamic of our relationship. The second year onward we developed a different relationship, which is why we dedicated Sundays to Mother/ Daughter Manicure and Pedicure day.”

She points out just how alike the pair is by sharing the following story, “We were travelling out of the country and got separated. It turned out that we both visited the same spa at different times that day and even picked out the same nail polish colour. When asked to describe a day in the life of a spa owner, Erin Shum laughs. There is never a dull moment, from early morning meetings
(she is a board member with the Kerrisdale Business Association) to meetings with the She to Shic team, keeping up with beauty trends, hosting events at the salon, purchasing supplies, merchandising products, and most importantly, ensuring that her clients and her team are happy. She says one of the most satisfying aspects of the business is the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people on a daily basis, including mothers and their daughters, wise older women, excited grads and career women. I saw first hand what Erin Shum had described when I visited She to Shic. A little girl was getting a pedicure alongside her mother, while several mature customers were also enjoying the same treatment in the relaxing spa. She to Shic Boutique Beauty Lounge is a place where you leave not only feeling good about yourself, but also feeling that much better for having been gentle and kind to Mother Earth.

THE PLEASURES OF PRESCHOOL by Hilary Feldman
photos submitted
Your little person is past the toddler stage, but not yet ready for “big kid” school – that pretty much sums up the preschooler phase from 3 to 5 years old. At this age, children are enthusiastic learners, budding socialites, and ready for a tiny taste of independence. It’s the perfect time to provide additional opportunities for them to grow and discover. Preschools offer classes for children between 30 months and five years old. The teachers hold Early Childhood Education (ECE) licences and plan an educational program that typically follows the school year from September through June. Most classes are two to three hours long and encourage children to experience all the major learning areas: social, cognitive, emotional, and physical. Early childhood educators balance these opportunities to help young children thrive. Through wide-ranging activities, preschoolers

explore and learn. Socially, children are ready to develop skills such as communication, cooperation, sharing, helping, and taking turns. Cognitive opportunities spark each child’s imagination and promote problem solving, story telling, science exploration, and math concepts. Emotional development includes important life skills such as selfesteem, independence, and empathy. Physically, preschoolers are working on their fine motor abilities through manipulating objects, while building muscles and balance with large motor activities. All preschools strive to give children the joy of learning and a sense of their own competence. Kerrisdale is home to a number of different preschools, each with its own particular character and program. Many local preschools offer a play-based curriculum. Early education research shows that children learn best through play. With opportunities for free play and other self-

directed activities, children follow their own interests, work through any worries or fears, explore new concepts, practice skills, observe their environment, and make connections. This process leads preschoolers to become active and self-directed learners – and these are the basic skills needed for school readiness and further academic success. Typically, preschools have various areas for children to explore. Young artists can draw and paint, with play dough and other creative materials also available. Sand and water tables promote openended tactile discovery along with pouring, scooping, and other popular pastimes. Blocks and other construction supplies encourage engineering and architectural creativity. Puzzles and other manipulatives help develop spatial awareness and grasp math concepts. Dramatic play and dress-up areas allow children to reinvent themselves and take on new roles. A reading nook offers a welcome quiet retreat or a place to share a favourite story. Across the preschool year, activities are varied to keep the classroom fresh and engaging. Bumblebee Preschool has been part of the Kerrisdale community for more than 30 years, offering a stimulating play-based curriculum and supportive environment. Located across from Ryerson United Church, the classroom is bright and spacious. With three teachers, the preschool is proud of its higher teacher-child ratio. The varied program allows

take part in story time at the library each month, as well as go skating at the local rink during the winter. Occasional activities include music and cooking as well as field trips in the community. Monthly special presentations and visitors enhance the program; in the past, these have included dancers, a magician, a clown, plus music and yoga classes. children to try cooking and gardening. As a non-profit and parent-run organization, parents can get involved –– capably guided by Miss Susi, Chris, and Brenda –– to create positive first school experiences for their children. Classes are offered either two mornings, three mornings, or four afternoons each week. Bumblebee Preschool also nurtures a sense of community through assisting local charities and needy families with holiday hampers and other support. The ultimate endorsement? Bumblebee alumni are now bringing their own children to the preschool. Kerrisdale Little Owls Preschool is another local institution, currently marking 40 years of learning through play. The three teachers – Sandra, Rebecca, and Grace – provide a nurturing environment that promotes child development. Conveniently located in Kerrisdale Community Centre, the children

For more than 30 years Little People Preschool has offered a hands-on environment that encourages children to ask questions and find answers. Learning through play is fun and exciting, and every child is supported to develop a sense of self-awareness, curiosity, imagination, and those allimportant social skills. As a nonprofit and parent-run organization, parents and teachers work together to create the optimal first school experience. The preschool is located next to Knox United Church and Kerrisdale Elementary School and offers a bright, spacious, and colourful facility with a high adult-child ratio. Teachers Liz, Alexandra, and April celebrate the fact that every day is full of precious and unique teachable moments. Special guests offer amazing experiences, from flexing muscles with a yoga class to seeing owls up close and even watching a mouth-painter at work. The preschool offers 2-year-old, 3-year-old, and 4-year-old classes. Since 1975, Stepping Stone Preschool has offered children diverse opportunities to learn and explore through play. When planning for each class, the teachers consider the children’s current interests – creating what is known as an emergent curriculum. This child-centred approach, inspired by Reggio Emilia, keeps the program exciting, fresh, and meaningful to each class. Recently, a focus on friendship saw one class make a friendship box to

recognize and promote friendly behaviour among the children; the project culminated in a friendship tea to celebrate their newfound social skills. The children are empowered to develop self-esteem, self-confidence, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, which are all important for future educational success. Classes are offered two, three or five mornings a week with teachers Sharon and Jenna. Located across from Choices Market, the preschool is a non-profit, parentrun organization and boasts an extensive outdoor play area built in 2012. Outside the classroom, the children also enjoy field trips such as picking pumpkins at Southlands Farm and visiting the UBC Botanical Garden.

Various activities, both structured and unstructured, are considered important – from tying shoelaces to using specific math tools. Ivy Montessori School offers both preschool and kindergarten programs. Following the traditional Montessori curriculum, different activity stations provide everyday living skills, sensory materials, language arts, and mathematics. These areas are supplemented by regular exposure to other subjects such as art, music, dance, and science. Occasional
Montessori preschools are based on the educational philosophy set out by Dr. Maria Montessori more than 100 years ago. A key concept is that every child can learn and develop without being taught directly. Teachers observe and support, rather than directing children’s activities. Children can learn at their own pace and follow their individual interests within a carefully designed classroom, known as a “prepared environment,” that includes both the physical space and its contents. Toys are not part of the Montessori

field trips might include exploring a chocolate factory, for example. Learning about countries around the world can provide a taste of geography and an introduction to other cultures. From its start in 1983, the school has expanded and now offers three locations, including Kerrisdale, Dunbar, and Kitsilano. Located in Kerrisdale’s St. Mary’s Church, teachers Kumi and Murvely lead morning and afternoon preschool classes five days a week. Kerrisdale Montessori School, established in 1992, offers a child-centred preschool program. Starting with the belief that children are creative and self-directed earners, teachers Miranda and Gina give each child the freedom to explore and discover through specialized Montessori materials. Within a culturally rich and diverse three-year program, children may learn about the universe, investigate alphabet sounds, or learn the flags of the world, and still have time to create still-life paintings before lunch. Located in Ryerson United Church, the preschool offers a mixedage class four mornings a week, with Fridays open to kindergarten-aged children.

Your child’s first educational experience can set the tone for years to come. Preschoolers learn to trust their teachers, feel supported and nurtured, and develop social relationships. They also learn about school routines, group activities, and how to follow their interests. Most importantly, this step toward independence should be full of fun and excitement.
With so many great preschool choices you can’t go wrong. Ultimately, to find a good

KERRISDALE LITTLE LEAGUE:
Sliding Into Home Plate by Sarah Gordon
photos by Sandra Steier
Kerrisdale Little League (KLL) has hit a home run after a somewhat tumultuous period in the club’s history. It was in 2008 that KLL’s board of directors stepped back and took stock of the situation. With hard work from an exceptionally dedicated group of volunteers and a surge of community support, the 56-year-old baseball league remarkably rebuilt itself to its former glory, and then some. They balanced the books, and increased membership from 400 to 600 players. Jenny Pearson, past president (2008-2010), spoke to me about KLL’s revitalization. KLL is fortunate to have such an extremely positive and enthusiastic spokesperson go to bat for the organization. She has an eight-year history with KLL, having been brought into the volunteer fold as a parent when her oldest son (14) began playing Blastball. Her younger son (12) and daughter (11) still play baseball.

It did not take long for Pearson’s talents to be recognized and she became president of the board (2008-2010). It was during that time that KLL was revived. Subsequently, the hard work that went into saving the club has inspired others to keep it going. Last year the thriving league received gratifying recognition when it was selected by B.C. Little League to host the Little League Provincials this July. Chris Andison, KLL’s past president (2010-2012), was actively involved in helping bring the tournament to the community. Pearson says, “Kerrisdale Little League has been building for this moment for the past several years. We promise to host a tournament that 120 Little Leaguers will never forget.” Current KLL president Chris Hacker says, “We are proud to host the 2013 Provincials. This opportunity has brought our league and community together.”

Cheering will be a frequent sound coming from Elm Park when three games per day are scheduled for the weeklong tournament. As Pearson says, “This is a kid’s dream, the big show in your own park.” In fact, Pearson has to pinch herself to believe they are holding this prestigious event after having come so close to the edge five years ago. She says, “We have been bestowed an honour to host the provincials.” Eight teams from across the province will participate in the tournament. Which teams will be present is dependent on how they perform in their district games leading up to the Provincials. KLL’s nine-week season is short but intense. Scheduling field usage revolves around soccer season; hence baseball season begins in mid-April and continues until near the end of the school year in mid-June. Little Leagues in every community are driven by an incredible number of volunteers, and KLL is no exception. Players’ parents (the age level of Little League is 12 years and under) are required to assist for several hours each week with duties such as set up, installing signs, and prepping the field. In total there are 250 volunteers involved from coaches to game day volunteers, bench parents, and the board of directors.
With sporting grants being cut back KLL is dependent on fees, sponsorships from local businesses, and private donations. For example, one donor came to KLL’s financial rescue when a tree fell, destroying the batting

cage, and it required rebuilding. A huge event such as the Provincials takes plenty of planning. Parking is always an issue in busy Kerrisdale however, through a combination of City of Vancouver special event parking and some local churches stepping in to donate parking spaces the pressure will be eased. In addition, KLL is advising people to walk, take transit or cycle into the area. Pearson envisions Kerrisdale village will be hopping with activity as spectators and players will be dining and shopping in between games. Organizers anticipate as many as 800 people will be in the park each day, providing Kerrisdale with a perfect

opportunity to showcase all of the wonderful businesses and services to eager baseball fans. A big bravo is in order for Kerrisdale Little League’s triumphant recovery and their victory in landing the Little League Provincials. Mark your calendars for the week of July 20 to 28 and head to Elm Park. Slap on some sunscreen, find a plum seat, head to the concession for some game time goodies, warm up your singing voice for a rousing round of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” and prepare to cheer on KLL players as they slide into home plate. Go team!
