A Message from DVBA Karen Wyder, President of the Dunbar Village Business Association Welcome to the fall issue of Dunbar Life magazine! I feel honoured to serve as the new President of the Dunbar Village Business Association. As a local business owner (I co-own The Dailey Method fitness studio with my sister Jey) I look forward to working with our Board of Directors on existing and new initiatives to make Dunbar an even more desirable place to be. Many thanks to Stephanie Brooks of Pacific Eye Doctors for her work as President last year! In addition to our volunteer Board of Directors of 12 business members who implement the DVBA initiatives, we also have a group of volunteer “Block Captains” who share information with the businesses and help us create community. It’s inspiring to witness everyone within our community who is willing to contribute to make Dunbar Village a neighbourhood of which we can all be proud. I’m also excited to be working with our new Executive Director, Lisa Clement, who is already generating marvellous ideas and showing a great commitment to the community. We are in the midst of planning another exciting Dunbar Village Harvest Festival! Our street festival takes place one week earlier this year on Saturday, September 20th from 11am to 3pm. We have wonderful things happening in all three areas of Dunbar, and all ages are welcome. Expect to hear live music, view community group displays, attend instructional workshops, and experience games and give-aways presented by the businesses. Our focus has been to ensure

4

that there is something for everyone. See the event brochure “pull out” at the centre of this issue for more details. Back by popular demand is “Passport to Dunbar.” Stamp your passport at all participating businesses during Harvest Fest, and then enter to win a stunning prize package donated by local merchants. Passports can be found printed on the pull out brochure. Additional passports can be found at the event and online at dunbarvillage.ca in midSeptember. Our free dog-friendly buses will whisk you to where you need to go during the event. In this issue of Dunbar Life, rather than profile one or two businesses, we decided to promote entire districts! Dunbar North (Dunbar from West 16th to West 19th) and Dunbar South (West 39th to West 41st and then along West 41st to Collingwood) have much to offer for those who may not be as familiar with these areas. Along with retail, we have many businesses here to serve you! Also in this issue, you may relate to Sue Dvorak’s comical Halloween article. We hope her story will inspire you to whip up a costume and take part in Trick-or-Treat in Dunbar Village. This non-scary event for little ghouls, pirates, princesses and more, takes place on Saturday, October 25 from 3-5pm. Merchants in all three areas of Dunbar Village will hand out candy to costumed kids. Volunteers are needed to help hand out candy and ensure safe street crossings during the event. If you have a non-scary costume and are willing to volunteer, please email Lisa at info@ dunbarvillage.ca Wishing you a happy autumn and looking forward to seeing you at our Harvest Festival & Trick-or-Treat in Dunbar Village events!

“The Garden Pro’s to Call from Spring through Fall”

www.HigherGroundGardens.com Get the Best Value for Your Hedge Trimming Trimming hedges in the fall, after the summer growth slows, is a great time to get long lasting value from your hedge. Trimming in fall allows you to enjoy a tidy, straight or rounded hedge until spring. In fall, plants redirect growth to the roots and away from leaves. In addition to trimming, it is a good time to provide hedges with a broadleaf evergreen fertilizer to ensure strength and vitality during the winter.

Top Hedge Choices for Shade • Hick’s Yew (Taxus x media ‘Hicksii’), be sure to buy full, thick plants for planting in the shade. Scraggly plants will not fill in. • Winter Gem boxwood (Buxus j. ‘Winter Gem’), stays green all winter unlike English boxwood (Buxus suffruticosa) which turns yellow during the colder months. • Himalayan sweetbox (Sarcoccoca ruscifolia), this dark green shrub can

be sheared as a short hedge, has sweet smelling flowers in January and tolerates drought. • Strawberry arbutus (arbutus unedo ‘Compacta’), a unique hedge option that offers year round interest and edible fruit, grow shrubs in a hedgerow for great effect.

Hedges and Boulevard Landscaping Encroachments When trees and bushes are overgrown, they can impede streets, curbs, and boulevards. This is called a boulevard landscaping encroachment. If you receive a notice from the city, it is recommended you hire a professional contractor. The City crew’s priority is to provide a safe passage along the sidewalk, nothing else, and certainly not aesthetics. You can better keep control over the final look of your encroaching hedges.

Back to School Road Safety The Dunbar Parent Action Committee (PAC), in partnership with Genesis Security, City of Vancouver, ICBC, Vancouver School Board, Kerrisdale/Oakridge/Marpole Community Policing Centre, Vancouver Coastal Health, and the Dunbar Residents’ Association, is excited to announce its new program entitled “Keeping it Community & Kid Safe” (KiCKS) designed to heighten awareness in the Dunbar community with regard to the importance of: • Maximizing traffic safety for all schoolground users at all hours (playgrounds, gyms, sport fields, before and afterschool care); • Improving school community awareness of traffic management rules and parking regulations; • Providing in-school communication programs to educate students and parents on alternative travel options to and from school; • Improving health benefits, reducing stress and enhancing the overall learning environment through walk/ride initiatives;

32

• Reducing emissions and pollution by reducing traffic congestion around the school. As part of the launch of this program, we would like to highlight some of the key initiatives that are currently underway and will be ongoing throughout the year. Please check back throughout the school year to learn more about other programs the Dunbar PAC will be launching to help make our schools and community safer for our kids!

DID YOU KNOW? A pedestrian struck by a car travelling at 50km/hr is eight times more likely to be killed than if struck by a vehicle travelling at 30km/hr. Be aware and reduce your speed in school zones and park/playground areas. For each 1.6km/hr reduction in average speed, collisions are reduced by five per cent.

Operation Slow Down: I go to School Here Genesis Security, in collaboration with all local Dunbar schools and the Community Policing Centre, has chosen to take an active role in keeping the Westside of Vancouver safe by providing their Free 24hr Community Patrol since 2005. In the meantime, our Community Patrol is helping to keep the school communities safe by providing advice and traffic controls in the school zone. As part of this initiative, we are launching OPERATION SLOW DOWN: I GO TO SCHOOL HERE, a campaign which involves a postcard that will be distributed to drivers who are not following the rules and regulations of school traffic management. Safety tips include:

keep an eye out! Volunteers of the Community Policing Centre, in conjunction with the Vancouver Police Department and ICBC, will be out in the community with the Speedwatch program. Drivers should be on the lookout for Genesis Security patrollers who will be on the road providing important advice to violators on how to better follow traffic guidelines. Dunbar’s very own Community Patrollers will soon be helping out too, assisting as crossing guards in key school crosswalks.

• Reduced speed in school zones: 30km/ hr; • Following school zone signage: no parking, no idling; • Patience while waiting for children in crossing zones; • Obeying all yield, stop and traffic control signals; • Stopping when a stop sign paddle is up; • Keeping school intersections clear: no stopping on school crosswalks, no U-turns or 3-point turns. Thank you to Genesis Security and its partners for doing such an amazing job at keeping our community patrolled and safe!

NEIGHBOURHOOD PACE CAR PROGRAM With fall approaching, speed reduction is a key element in keeping our community safe. Parachute’s Pace Car Community program speaks to the specific issue of traffic calming. Volunteers in the parent community agree to drive at the posted speed limit. These pace cars become a “mobile speed bump” slowing speeding traffic behind them. Traffic is not only calmed on one street, but throughout the neighbourhood. Watch for a PACE Car in your area!

KEEPING YOUR HOME AND FAMILY SAFE IS OUR #1 PRIORITY The time has come to expect more from your alarm company. ULC Security Monitoring combine with

The Trials of “Trick-or-Treat” by Sue Dvorak The scariest part of Halloween has been putting together six costumes each October. There are two types of parents: those who love collecting and creating Halloween costumes and those who do not. Unfortunately for my children, I do not. But like many quirks of family life they were blissfully unaware of this up until they had other standards to compare to. Long ago an enthusiastic costumecreator gave us two different sized adorable Dalmatian dog costumes she had made. For about ten Halloweens in a row someone in our family was dressed as a dog, as in “who wants to be the Dalmatian?”, again made possible by the fact my kids did not know that some children dress up as different things each year. The black gown and face mask combo was always a reliable basic option, which later became less ideal when our youngest child became terrified of all face masks, let alone intentionally scary ones. It got so bad that I had to keep secret which room I hid the masks in, because she would be unable to enter if she knew. Our daughter’s fear of masks led to some authentically scary Halloween experiences.

44

One year I opened the front door to greet a garden-variety group of trick-or-treaters. As observed by our two year old crouched on the stairs, one was wearing a mask. Our daughter’s continuous blood-curdling screams began and did not stop throughout the greeting and candy exchange. Initially the trick-or-treaters were suitably impressed by our fabulous sound effects but rapidly became alarmed. A bumble bee began to cry. They all ran down the driveway terrified. The entire exercise repeated itself in reverse when we went out later. A gentleman answered his door wearing a mask. He must have thought it quite a “trick” that we greeted him with a happy, polite chorus of “trick or treat!!” combined with incessant terrorized screaming. Savvy kids will notice that it becomes very unlikely you will be asked to sing a song for your candy if one member of your group is screaming without breathing. Just FYI.

www.DunbarLife.com | September 1 - November 15, 2014

The costume deficit was aided by various donations: a pirate hat and accessories, a large duck outfit, a Darth Vader mask/helmet combo ( horrors!). Otherwise we have had some fall-back basics: princess variations and the ever-helpful “which-what-who,” the non-sensical combination of random items creating a unique character. For example our older son mixed the Dalmatian headgear (score one again for the Dalmatian), one boxing glove, a furry vest, heart-covered boxer shorts, leggings and cowboy boots. The answer to the question “what are you?” was simply: “Dressed up for Halloween!” I realize these lame costumes were brought about by maternal apathy but I like to consider them “child-centered creativity.” Some degree of neglect is good for our children: Halloween costumery seemed a convenient place for some neglect. Besides in Vancouver even the most epic costume becomes pathetic when one has to wear a raincoat over top. “Are you kidding?? Of COURSE Batman sometimes wore a raincoat!” Try rationalizing with an irrational fairy bawling because she has to wear rainboots instead of plastic high-heeled slippers with fur. We live on a naturally scary street. It’s a quiet

dead-end and on Halloween night there are few people out, owls hooting on branches and the odd coyote spotted standing silhouetted through light fog against the forest. Actually spooky. Our kids loved it: running down the street in the dark, dressed up, terrible costumes dragging along, collecting candy from SEVEN HOUSES! Imagine the joy upon returning home to sit around the table and regale about the magical evening. But in mid-elementary school our eldest was allowed to join a friend to trick-or-treat in the festive atmosphere found in the heart of Dunbar, on the rows and rows of tree-lined streets swarming with parades of kids in excellent costumes and entire families out, homes and yards lit up and decked out with thrilling decorations... and many, many houses to visit. She arrived back home, struggling under the weight of her heavily laden candy bag, stating in an definite, accusatory tone: “Okay, now THAT’s how you do Halloween!” And thus it all evolved. Halloween falls on a Friday this year: good for schools, worse for parents. The only advice I am qualified to give is to start working on the costume before the Thursday. Happy Halloween!
