As autumn’s red, orange and yellow hues give way to holiday lights, Dunbar Village is preparing for the festive season. It was lovely to see families dressed up for the Dunbar Village Business Association’s annual trick-or-treat event on October 24. Thank you to the participating businesses for making this neighbourhood tradition possible.
Holiday traditions run deep in Dunbar, and shopping locally is part of that spirit. Our merchants look forward to welcoming you this season and helping you find thoughtful gifts for the people on your list.
The DVBA also held its annual general meeting in September. Thank you to our members, Board and community partners for their continued work and support throughout the year. One DVBA project celebrated at the AGM was the mural titled “A Bright Afternoon in British Columbia,” painted on the exterior wall of K&K Pet Foods at W 30th and Dunbar Street. The mural celebrates B.C.’s native flora and insects, featuring Pacific tiger lilies, Pacific bleeding hearts, and the Lorquin’s admiral butterfly. Set against a bright, golden sky, the composition captures a sunny afternoon in a vibrant meadow, highlighting the beauty and biodiversity of the Pacific Northwest. Familiar plants and pollinators create a shared sense of place, encouraging residents to appreciate their local environment while fostering community pride, stewardship, and a stronger connection to the landscape. Another bright spot this season in Dunbar is the return of our Winter White Holiday Windows, featuring painted winter scenes in participating storefronts. Together with seasonal street banners, holiday lighting and

IVIDO JEANS: A Celebration of Hips
Story by Sarah Gordon | Photos by Sandra Steier & Carolynne Palla Ivido Jeans opened on Dunbar Street in May 2026, bringing a Colombian denim brand known for its quality and distinctive fit to the neighbourhood. Ivido has its roots in Colombia, a country globally renowned for quality textiles. Before opening the Dunbar store, Ivido operated two locations at Hudson’s Bay in downtown Vancouver and Park Royal. For Colombian-born designer and boutique owner Ivis Gonzalez, the closure of the department store was challenging, but it also enabled Ivido to take a new direction. “It created an opportunity for us to open our own space. Opening our doors in Dunbar allowed us to focus on what matters most: providing a warm, intimate, and personalized shopping experience.” 6
Ivis moved to Vancouver more than 20 years ago, and her family is closely connected to the area. She lives in Dunbar, and opening the boutique here has allowed her to connect with a community she already knows and loves.
The company’s vision goes far beyond simply selling clothes. Designed with built-in tummy control and a natural push-up effect, Ivido jeans feature high-grade stretch fabrics that offer freedom of movement without squeezing the body. “We offer garments with an impeccable cut that enhances the silhouette, providing exceptional comfort and style.”
Rather than relying on standard numbers for sizing, Ivido uses names that celebrate women’s curves from size 0 up to plus sizes. “We call them Tango, Salsa, Merengue, Samba, and Flamenco. Our plus-size line features names like Delicious, Sweet Delicious, Hot Delicious, Just Delicious, and Spicy.” “We always say that there is nothing wrong with a woman's size or shape, it's what you wear. Let’s celebrate your hips!” Ivis adds, “We offer a broad and thoughtful range of options for different occasions and personal styles. Our goal is to make every customer feel like there's something made for her.” Ivido has received attention from major publications including The New York Times, Glamour, NBC, and ABC, with The New York Times calling the signature fit “a miracle.” To keep the collections fresh and dynamic, Ivido works with limited quantities and brings in new arrivals every week. While the denim is crafted in Colombia, the company also collaborates with international suppliers to curate dresses, tops, outerwear, and gifts, giving customers a broader range of options. “Instead of sales, we give back to our customers through gifts, like coupons or gift
cards they can use whenever it works best for them. We prefer it to feel like a genuine thank you, rather than simply marking items down. For the holiday season, we plan to continue this approach by offering special gifts and benefits to our customers.”

Following an enthusiastic response to a live music showcase held to celebrate Ivido’s grand opening, Ivis plans to host cultural events
several times a year, weather permitting, to entertain and bring the community together. “We are incredibly grateful to our fellow local merchants and neighbours who have welcomed and supported us. Our hope is to see this area grow and transform even more, and we invite more unique businesses to invest here.” She adds, “People genuinely want to see local businesses succeed and remain part of the neighbourhood.” Ivis has experienced that sense of community firsthand. Customers recommend Ivido to their friends and family, and she has seen grandmothers bring their daughters and granddaughters to the boutique. She finds that multigenerational connection incredibly meaningful.
Customers value the personalized service and time taken to help them choose the right piece. 8
“Our most popular styles right now are the Gabriela and the Jacqueline. Gabriela is a dressier flare with tummy control, while Jacqueline is a more casual mid-rise flare with a very flattering shape.” “We recently introduced a new style called Maria Bonita, which I created to represent this new chapter of Ivido here in Dunbar.” The most satisfying part of Ivis’ business is the personal connections she has with her customers. “They inspire me every day. I love listening to them, observing what they need, and learning from them. I always say that I’m not really the designer; my customers are. I simply listen and observe, and then I translate their needs into denim. Many of the ideas behind my jeans come from real women and their experiences. That connection is what continues to inspire me to create.” Her two employees, Elizabeth and Silvia, worked with Ivis at Hudson’s Bay; Ivis also works in the store. She says, “That's actually my favourite part of the work, seeing the finished product on my customers’ bodies.”

SKINWORKS: The Next Chapter Begins Story by Sarah Gordon
After more than three decades of caring for patients in Vancouver, plastic surgeon Dr. Nick Carr is preparing to retire, bringing one chapter of his career to a close while opening another for Skinworks and the next generation of his family. Since opening Skinworks in 2004, he has built a practice around a personalized approach, taking the time to listen to patients, explain their options and guide them through each step of their journey. Supported by a dedicated team of physicians, nurses and patient-care staff, he has helped make Skinworks a trusted part of Vancouver’s medical community. Over the years, Dr. Carr has specialized in cosmetic procedures, including breast and abdominal surgery, as well as advanced facial techniques. He is known for his work with endoscopic and minimally invasive surgical approaches. His focus has been on combining technical skill with an understanding of each patient’s individual needs and desired outcomes. Throughout his career, Dr. Carr has taught and mentored future plastic surgeons, sharing his knowledge and experience with those entering the profession. He has served as director of the Plastic Surgery Unit at Vancouver General Hospital, led UBC’s plastic surgery residency training program and later headed the university’s Division of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Carr’s three children have all pursued careers in medicine. His sons, Matthew and Michael, have followed in his footsteps in plastic surgery, while his daughter, Lauren, is an ophthalmologist practising in Vancouver with a particular interest in eyelid surgery. She has also worked alongside her father on cases at Skinworks. 34
Matthew is completing specialty training in Philadelphia and is expected to return next summer to begin a position at Vancouver General Hospital. Michael is already practising at Surrey Memorial Hospital and Peace Arch Hospital. Both will also be working at Skinworks, helping to carry the practice forward. Dr. Carr plans to work alongside his sons during the initial transition. Thank you, Dr. Carr, for your many years of caring for patients and serving the Dunbar community.
