A Message from DVBA Karen Wyder, President of the Dunbar Village Business Association Welcome to the winter issue of Dunbar Life! The magic of the holiday season is upon us! We have waved a fond goodbye (until next year) to Dunbar Village Harvest Festival and Trick-or-Treat in Dunbar Village, and now we dive into our favourite time of the year. Inside, our largest ever Dunbar Village Gift Guide features local merchants’ suggestions on how to shop locally for your holiday needs. Dunbar Village for the Holidays takes place on Saturday, December 19th from 10:00am to 3:00pm. See page 59 for carriage pick-up times in all three areas of Dunbar. Bring your family out to enjoy the charm of oldfashioned horse carriage rides sponsored by the Dunbar Village Business Association. Contributing to the festive fun, DVBA’s elves will serve complimentary hot chocolate and the sounds of carolling will once again be heard throughout Dunbar Village from the a cappella trio Musically Yours. You can also get a head start on Christmas shopping at the Dunbar Holiday Craft Fair where you will discover unique handcrafted gifts. Now in its 33rd year, the Craft Fair takes place on November 28th at the Dunbar Community Centre.

4

In this issue, read about Farhan Haider, the proud owner of Mac’s Convenience Store on Dunbar. This merchant always has a big, welcoming smile for his customers. We also feature Martin Brothers Funeral Services that opened in North Dunbar in August 2013. Although new to Vancouver, the company dates back to 1907 in Lethbridge, Alberta. Customers are always impressed by the attractive, modern, corner location and Martin Brothers’ warm and professional staff. We shine the spotlight on Carolyn Klaassen and Andrea Sara, this month’s Champions of Dunbar. A campaign to slow down speeding cars, spearheaded by these two dynamic women, has snowballed into a community building exercise. Enjoy a humorous article by Sue Dvorak about the trials and tribulations of taking a large family on a downhill skiing holiday. It was November 28, 1950, when the Dunbar Branch of the Vancouver Public Library opened. We look forward to the celebration of their 65th anniversary with special events and activities. Dunbar merchants have so much to offer and they are ready to make your holiday shopping and dining memorable. We encourage you to support your community and shop locally. On behalf of the Dunbar Village Business Association, we wish you all the joy the holiday season brings and a very happy 2016.

Martin Brothers Funeral Services: There When You Need Them Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

Death is a difficult topic for many of us to broach. When your family is faced with a loss, the caring and compassionate professionals at Martin Brothers Funeral Services are there to help get you through one of life’s most challenging times. Martin Brothers is a well-established funeral provider although it is relatively new to Vancouver. The company dates back to 1907 when Benjamin Martin founded the company in Lethbridge, Alberta. In 1922 he and his brother Harry purchased the T.S. Fetterly firm, which then became Martin Brothers. In 1961 Ben’s sons Derek and Dale Martin purchased the funeral home from their father and uncle. Dale Martin Sr.’s son, Dale Martin Jr., resides as President and CEO of Martin Brothers. Director of Operations, Valerie Martell indicates this is not a traditional funeral home; 8

there is no chapel on site as there are so many churches and other venues to choose from in the community.

Martell explains, “We did not want to pigeon hole ourselves by having a chapel internally, instead we go to our client’s church or other venue and bring the service to them.” Located inside an attractive, modern glass fronted corner location at Dunbar Street and West 18th Avenue, Martin Brothers opened in August 2013. “Martin Brothers has been well accepted and people are pleasantly surprised when they walk through the door,” Martell says. The staff throws open the glass doors as often as possible to remove the mystery of funeral

services. Martin Brothers staff is pleased by how welcoming the community has been. How did a Lethbridge based funeral provider open a location on Dunbar Street? Dale Martin Jr. was educated on Vancouver Island and his family spent much of their time in Vancouver.

He was aware a funeral provider was not serving Dunbar and expanding to Vancouver was a natural fit for his family business. They were convinced Martin Brothers’ services would be of value to Dunbar’s established, multi-generational population. Martell has been with Martin Brothers for eight years. Three years ago she came from Lethbridge to launch the Dunbar location. Vancouver is now her home, although she returns to her native Alberta as often as possible. She meets all of the families who pay Martin Brothers a visit and she is also an embalmer. One doesn’t often meet a funeral director and questions inevitably arise in social situations. She is happy to shatter stereotypes and educate people about the importance of this job. She says there are not enough people going into this profession yet it is an essential service and she encourages people to explore it. When Martell was a preschooler her aunt died and she recalls caring deeply. At the viewing she wanted to adjust the sleeve on her aunt’s dress to make her look perfect. With this innate attention for fine details and no fear of death, she knew she wanted to be a funeral professional but it was unheard of for a woman to consider this career option. She came to the job later in life as a second career after going back to funeral service school for two years.

Interestingly, career aptitude tests indicated she was best suited for a career as a funeral director or a comedian (even though she says she isn’t funny, she really is). A death can leave family members shocked and reeling. This is where Martin Brothers staff is at their best. As professionals they step in and plan a full service. They have the connections to pull it all together – from arranging an emcee and musicians to catering and flower arrangements, all of the details are left in their capable hands so that you and your family are able to pause and reflect on the person you lost. They know the value of this. Martin Brothers discovers what is important to the family and works with their style and

budget. They can help determine if you would like a public reception and a second reception at home. Pre-planning a funeral is always an option and it makes it easier when a loved one’s wishes are set down in advance. Some people even choose to prepay and the payment is held in an insurance policy. The amount is guaranteed at today’s rate, so even if a death occurs many years from now the price is fixed. Unique to this funeral provider is the opportunity to book a ceremony at sea to scatter ashes from Martin Brothers privately owned 70-foot yacht, the Pacific Ceremony. They will take friends and family out to English Bay where your loved one’s ashes will be gently scattered. The GPS location will be marked so if you ever visit that spot again you will know where your loved one was put to rest. Watch the beautiful ceremony at sea video on Martin Brothers website. It is extremely moving to witness passengers simultaneously release white balloons from the back of the yacht (and a little hard not to shed a tear). It is those moments of beauty that will be remembered in years to come. What is most fulfilling about her line of work? Martel says, “I am amazed at the number of gracious people I encounter in my profession.” It warms her heart that people

10

share their gratitude when that they should be devoting their energy to care for themselves. She remarks, “I see the goodness in people and it surprises me every day.” Martin Brothers is dedicated to making things easier for people by providing comfort in death by being honest, authentic and approachable. At the end of the day these trained funeral professionals are able to take the worry out of a family’s hands and offer a beautiful and meaningful service so you can celebrate a life well lived. Maximize Enjoyment of Your Garden in Winter Bulbs and Winter Flowering Plants

Add a Blanket of Mulch

• Plant daffodils for bright yellow colour come spring. I recommend daffodils because they are so hardy. Tulips are often dug up by squirrels, so be prepared to plant them in cages or other protective ways. • To enjoy some colourful shrubs and evergreens in winter, plant low-growing wintergreen for bright red edible berries that taste like, well, wintergreen gum. Winter heather (Erica carnea), Japanese skimmia and coral bells (Heuchera) add colour with flowers, berries or foliage. • For a big show on shrubs, try Callicarpa (beauty berry) for it’s bright purple berries and ‘Dawn’ Viburnum for pale pink blooms that start in January. • Winter annuals are always fun and colourful. Tried and true pansies, kale, Swiss chard and Cyclamen add a touch of charm. • Be sure to get any new plants into the ground by the end of November.

Cover your garden beds with composted mulch. This can be done anytime through late fall or early winter, once you’ve raked away all the fallen leaves. You will reduce plant loss and keep roots warm in winter.

Prune and Trim your Hedges and Trees in Winter Winter pruning is an effective way to invigorate fruit trees, or prune ornamental trees for shape and structure. January and February are excellent months to have your laurel hedges trimmed to keep them tidy, or to hard prune to re-define the shape. It is beneficial to prune during the dormant period as this will encourage growth once the warmer spring and summer weather settles in.

Mac’s: Canada’s Convenience

Store Since 1962 Story by Sarah Gordon

Photos by Sandra Steier

Mac’s has been a fixture on Dunbar Street since 1997. The Canadian convenience store franchise got its start in 1962 under the name Mac’s Milk, represented by the mascot “MacIntosh” the grinning cat, who sported a tam o' shanter hat and kilt.

Originally from Lahore, the capital city of the Pakistani province of Punjab, Haider holds a Masters degree in business administration and learnt how to run a successful business from his 11-year background in marketing.

In 1975 the company underwent a name change to Mac’s Convenience Stores. In 1999 the company was bought by Montreal based Alimentation Couche-Tard and the new logo “Hibou” the winking owl was introduced, welcoming customers at over 850 storefronts across Canada.

His new life in Canada began in 2008 when he moved to Canmore, Alberta. While working for another franchise, Shell Canada, he determined he would like to explore this line of work and submitted an application to see what opportunities existed with Mac’s. In 2011 his effort yielded the chance to move to Vancouver to run the Dunbar Street Mac’s.

Farhan Haider is the proud owner of Dunbar’s Mac’s and like the winking owl, he has a spark with his big, welcoming smile.

He takes pride in serving people and it is a priority to make customers feel happy when they come in the door. 20

While product buying is managed centrally by head office, all of the ordering for the Dunbar store is left to Haider. Recently he earned a feather in his cap when headquarters deemed, based on his location’s excellent sales, the Dunbar store would receive a large renovation, which took place this past summer.

www.DunbarLife.com | November 15, 2015 - February 15, 2016

New flooring, lighting, a variety of new equipment and a shift in the floor plan transformed Mac’s. Throughout the construction process the business remained open, as Haider did not want to inconvenience his customers. Today clients have even more selection from the new and upgraded equipment, which offers some of Mac’s mainstay products such as Frosters, Polar Pop, soft ice cream, milkshakes and coffee. Flavours have been added to the Polar Pop soda fountain station (with 20 flavours to choose from at an affordable 79 cents each). There are now 12 Frosters’ on tap, and nine flavours of soft ice cream and milkshakes. Simply Great, a European brand, is the house coffee which is paired with a state of the art machine that can whip up a cappuccino, latte or mochaccino with one touch of a button. Coffee drinkers are responding favourably and there has been a substantial increase in sales.

Open 24 hours a day, year round, the store’s top selling items include Frosters, milk, candy and coffee. Other popular services include an ATM, and the sale of both transit and lottery tickets. Mac’s has recently introduced their own economical brand of spring water, soft drinks, potato chips, nuts and trail mix (look for the owl logo). He and his wife Saba, who assists with the business, have a young family (two children ages 5 and 7). They enjoy seeing the shop as a family destination and mention children will drop in for a treat while their parents pick up supplies and look at the magazines. Mac’s clientele is diverse. The morning tends to bring in older clients who pick up a newspaper and coffee. The afternoon sees working people, school kids and families walking through the door, while night owls (including university students) often come in to refuel with snacks and coffee. Mac’s Roller Grill offers quick snacks for people on the go such as hot dogs, smokies, corn dogs, taquitos, spring rolls, breakfast burritos and chili cheese nachos. If you are looking for a fresh baked good to accompany a beverage the new Bakery to Go case offers muffins, cream cheese strudels, apple turnovers and chocolate chip cookies.

As a 24/7 business Mac’s is a go to store when other businesses are closed. Christmas and New Year’s Day are always exceptionally busy. Traditionally the convenience store offers customers free coffee on these special holidays. As a marketing specialist Haider points out that Mac’s is a wonderful place for gift buying. Two racks are loaded with gift cards with something to please everyone on your list including Mac’s gift card (good for students and teachers), Canadian Tire, Cineplex, Facebook, Indigo, iTunes, Old Navy, SportChek, Starbucks, Subway, prepaid credit cards, and a variety of popular game cards.

22

Haider appreciates the value of marketing tools such as social media and has created a Mac’s at Dunbar Facebook page so customers can interact with their neighbourhood convenience store. Going the extra mile for his customers is always at the top of Haider’s list. He mentions making home deliveries for a customer who was temporarily unable to leave the home, and he also recollects making a client’s day when she lost her wallet and never thought she would see it again. It’s all in a day’s work for this friendly business owner. Mac’s 4470 Dunbar Street Vancouver BC V6S 2G5 Telephone 604-736-9528 www.mymacs.ca

A Ski Trip Story by Sue Dvorak Some Dunbarites will be lucky enough to partake in a ski holiday this winter. From our location in Vancouver we can easily zip up to the North Shore mountains, trek to Whistler or make the trip in province to one of the fabulous ski resorts we are blessed with in B.C. For some families this experience is not an event, it is a lifestyle. These people are easily spotted on the hill: they know what they are doing and they look like it, appearing relaxed and competent, wearing suitable clothing and sporting current ski gear.

And then there are people like us. We are the awkward, poorly-outfitted visitors. We don’t ski often and when we do, it strikes me that designing a family outing more exhausting than a ski trip does not seem possible. Granted my memory is scarred by the Herculean effort required for outings back when the youngest two members of our group of eight had barely mastered walking let alone skiing. “What do you mean, you can’t carry any equipment...?”

Organizing a ski holiday was somewhat akin to executing a ground war or winter expedition of epic proportions. What with the ski equipment, the winter wear, the food, the activities, heck, just the mittens or boots, it was enough to just about push me over the edge. 40

Originally we had begun to half-heartedly buy ski equipment for the family but eventually gave up when we somehow ended up with three children all wearing size two boots at the same time. But then the renting of equipment seemed to take a whole day of its own to organize. And there were other nagging questions that read like elementary arithmetic problems: how many pairs of gloves do sixteen hands require for a five day trip with a loss rate of one glove per day? Still, the lead up to these trips was associated with much anticipation and excitement for the kids. During the planning of one trip, we frequently made mention of our fairly-tale sounding destination of “Silver Star,” a phrase that embedded itself in the imagination of our four year old daughter. So when she became very ill on our way to said destination, and was later lying in a feverish state in a little nest next to our bed in the mountain chalet she was still not deterred from her fixation, exclaiming in the night, “No matter what, I just want to get to Silver Star!” I did not have the heart to tell her she was already there. But once clothing and equipment and accommodation and food is sorted, you get out on the hill. For families with children who are absolute beginners, as ours all once were, ski lessons seemed a natural choice. Unless of course, you have kids who detest lessons of all sorts and rebel against enrollment in such a thing. So while other kids are dutifully riding up the moving carpet to practice their sliding V-turns, some kids might end up just playing in the snow with skiis, like digging snow with skiis, drawing in the snow with skiis, making paths and sitting sliding on skiis. Not at all what the instructor had in mind or what you paid for. But play happens. Later though, lessons were occasionally crucial, for example a trip when the whole family could ski except for the youngest two. Their unsuspecting instructor asked me vaguely if we had any goals; I said yes, that

www.DunbarLife.com | November 15, 2015 - February 15, 2016

these students needed to be able to ski green and blue runs by the end of the lesson. He laughed. I did not. Later that morning, as our youngest tried to follow a lengthy set of instructions for completing a turn, someone just yelled “TURN!” and she did. Perfectly. So off we all went skiing, that family with members hollering “turn!” while children raced ahead, wearing the oddest assortment of winter coats and random snow pants or layered soccer warmups. Sometimes the lessons happened spontaneously, as on the trip when our eight year old became separated from the group. We were all frantically searching for him along the run, and back to the top, while others in our group circled around to the chalet. And somehow that dear beginner, who had found himself perched at the top of a Black Diamond run, managed to patiently “pizza turn” his way down in the gullies between huge moguls and then all the way back to the place we were staying. A child in this situation must wonder

“First they have me do gradual entry Kindergarten, and now I do this??” But he survived.

All things considered though, even given the work-to-fun ratio, there is more than enough fun to make a ski trip worthwhile. The “apres-ski” alone is often worth the trip, what with outdoor hot-tub soaks, relaxation next to a fireplace, big shared group dinners, and after dinner dancing with whole family bustin’ a move with friends. But of course the best part of all are moments on the mountain, carving or sliding down a hill or paused on the side of one, in the beautiful muffled quiet between skiiers, in a place like no other, with snow covered vistas and wide open spaces. Lucky you if you get to go skiing this winter! May it be magical.

Champions of Dunbar Village: Two Extraordinary Women Commit to Building a Safer Community Story by Sarah Gordon

It is remarkable how teamwork can bring about big changes. A little more than a year ago, Andrea Sara, board member of Dunbar Residents’ Association (DRA) who acts as the Schools’ Liason joined forces with Carolyn Klaassen, Genesis Security Group’s Community Patrol Liason and Southlands Elementary School to address the issue of Dunbar’s road safety. In 2005 Genesis Security Group, one of Vancouver’s top security firms, started Canada’s first free community patrol program in Kerrisdale. After a few years they expanded to Dunbar and subsequently now cover the entire westside of Vancouver.

Klaassen recalls suggesting to her boss, “Community patrols need to do more than just be the eyes and ears and to get more involved with the schools and community.” Eighteen months ago Klaassen got involved with Dunbar’s Parent Advisory Committees (PAC) when she was invited as Genesis Security’s community patrol representative to attend a Dunbar joint PAC meeting. Sara explains, “I facilitate an annual meeting of the PAC Chairs of Dunbar’s elementary schools. Right now our focus is road safety and active transportation. We also have a group of supportive stakeholders who attend our annual meeting. The road safety stakeholders include: ICBC, Kerrisdale/Oakridge/Marpole (KOM) Community Policing Centre, Genesis Community Patrol and City of Vancouver Engineering. Southlands Insurance is also a sponsor as an ICBC Autoplan provider.” The roots of this community safety campaign stem back to the spring of 2014 when the neighbourhood schools and the DRA launched the KICKS campaign: Keeping it Community and Kid Safe. 44

Sara says, “We are proud to say every elementary school in the neighbourhood has participated in one way or another over the past 18 months, including the three private schools: St. George's, Crofton House and Immaculate Conception.” Each school focused on different aspects of “KICKS.” For example, Lord Kitchener Elementary encouraged biking and bike safety skills, Southlands Elementary focused on Speedwatch and Jules Quesnel Elementary concentrated on connecting with nature (stopping to smell the roses when you walk to school). The concern for school zone safety stems back five years ago when Camosun Street was repaved to eliminate potholes and speed bumps were removed. Klaassen remembers a lot of drivers speeding down Camosun Street, especially in front of Southlands Elementary. The street had become like a freeway for drivers to cut through to avoid Dunbar Street and make their way to U.B.C. since there are no traffic lights.

Klaassen says, “Even though it’s a school zone drivers just flew by! This caused concern for me; just thinking this is an accident ready to happen. The thought of a child getting hit or killed by a speeding driver in a school zone bothered me so much I took action.” Klaassen is grateful for the help of KOM Community Policing Centre who allowed her

www.DunbarLife.com | November 15, 2015 - February 15, 2016

Carolyn Klaassen and Andrea Sara

to use their speed watch equipment, which made it possible to collect statistics and show there was a problem. Shockingly, she clocked some drivers speeding at 80 km. After meeting with the Dunbar PAC Klaassen realized she was not the only one concerned about speeding drivers. It was also an issue for most of Vancouver’s west side schools.

“Since I patrol the whole westside, I knew this was a problem and it became a pet peeve of mine. Day in and day out I would see this and I wanted to do something. The VPD could only do so much. One officer thanked me that I am their eyes and ears to make these drivers slow down.” Carolyn Klaassen In her opinion, the situation at Southlands Elementary was the worst. After a few meetings with school representatives, parents and others from the City of Vancouver and ICBC, she says,” I was able to see that maybe change could actually happen.”

The next initiative was brainstorming traffic calming ideas to slow drivers down and create awareness of the 30 km speed limit in school zones. Operation Slow Down I Go to School Here was born. Klaassen proposed a plan to the group and requested their feedback. She read that Surrey was tired of speeders in their schools zones and got kids involved in an awareness campaign. That was a lightbulb moment. A kids’ colouring contest was created to get Dunbar elementary students directly involved in school zone safety. Last year the winners’ drawings were displayed on a postcard and the back of the card featured school zone safety tips for drivers. Klaassen smiles when she reports, “We got the schools on the west side involved and it was awesome!” What other changes have taken place? With the statistics from Klaassen’s speed watch campaign the City of Vancouver granted speed bumps in front of Southlands Elementary last August. She says, “That was a great accomplishment and gave me hope that with perseverance change will happen!” Sara says, “It has been absolutely fascinating watching how a simple campaign to

encourage more Walking n Wheeling and slowing down cars has snowballed into a community building exercise.” Today kids are walking with neighbours, who prior to this campaign, used to predominantly drive to school. Sara is thrilled to see fathers biking their kids to school, parents getting involved who haven't been previously and asking what more they can do to build a greater sense of community in school and playground settings.

It's been very inspiring to see how an initial concern for speeding cars has become a rallying point for community development,” Sara says. She says, “Principals are engaging with each other; we even had one principal speak at a City Hall meeting to voice her road safety concerns for her students. Other schools have formed neighbourhood traffic committees to work together with surrounding neighbours

to solve traffic management issues.” Sara believes, “There's a lot more work to be done but we've got a great core group of neighbourhood change agents and supportive stakeholders. Our next steps will involve formalizing the campaign into a more permanent Walk n Wheel club, increasing visibility especially as we move into darker months, and I'd really like to see the formation of an adult crossing guard program with our Dunbar Patrollers.” She concludes, “I don't think it has yet been recognized that grandparents are a big part of our schools, who are actively involved with their grandchildren, especially when they are in preschool, so we're working on ways to move the focus now to Safe routes for Seniors, which includes churches, community centres and local businesses.” Congratulations to Carolyn Klaassen and Andrea Sara, Champions of Dunbar, whose excellent, inspired teamwork and drive to take action continues to make Dunbar Village a safer place.
