Foreword I am pleased and honoured to present this guide to the first Palestinian Pavilion in the history of the Festival de Cannes. It is a very special moment for the many Palestinian film professionals around the world, and a milestone in the history of Palestinian cinema. For three decades, Palestinian films have been part of this prestigious festival, where they have been screened, and have been nominated for – and won – awards. Nevertheless, there has never been a pavilion bearing the name Palestine, where visitors could pop by to learn more about Palestinian cinema, and where Palestinian filmmakers and producers could meet with industry professionals, share views, and collaborate on projects. Behind these few pages lie the effort and vision of a very small yet ambitious team of film professionals who conceived the idea, dreamt about it, and have worked tirelessly to turn it into a reality. When, just a few months ago, Rashid Abdelhamid knocked on the doors of the Palestinian Ministry of Culture in Ramallah and the French Consulate in Jerusalem to rally support for this initiative, his idea seemed inviable, as realising it would need considerable planning time and concerted effort. Luckily, the proposal was met with the required enthusiasm and interest. Once Rashid teamed up with the producer and curator Mohanad Yaqubi, the endeavour was injected with tremendous energy and a hands-on approach, and was taken into a whole new level. Shortly after this collaboration began, the Palestine Film Institute (PFI) was born as a platform to support film production from and for Palestine, by providing development and consultancy, increasing accessibility for funding, and connecting film talents and experts. These efforts were met with enthusiastic support across the board as the PFI established connections and created networks by joining forces with Palestinian filmmakers and professionals in Palestine and beyond, furnishing the pavilion with essential information, trailers, posters, and other materials in almost no time. To promote emerging Palestinian films and filmmakers, and to lend them a hand in making headway in terms of funding and distribution, 10 films in progress about Palestine or by Palestinians were chosen to participate in the Cannes Producers Network by a jury assembled by PFI.

This guide brings together essential information about a range of Palestinian film production companies and institutions, as well as pertinent initiatives located in Palestine and abroad. It provides visitors of the Festival de Cannes clear and comprehensive information about the Palestinian film sector, and acts as a mean of connection for Palestinian professionals and delegation attending the festival. The guide also outlines the programme of events arranged at the pavilion, including various consultation sessions, symposiums, and other events. We welcome you all to a reception in co-operation with the Cannes Producers Network, and we hope you are able to attend an event of groovy Palestinian electronic music presented by a group of young talented Palestinian musicians on May 15. This first edition of the Palestinian Pavilion Guide will be updated on an annual basis, and will be posted online for wider access. We hope you will find its contents both useful and informative. We look forward to a fascinating experience as we pursue our hope to contribute meaningfully to shaping an annual presence at Cannes that will find success in promoting Palestinian cinema and talents. At the same time, we foresee the Palestine Pavilion becoming an annual destination for Palestinian and international film professionals alike, where they can engage in discussions and collaborate on new projects. Rana Anani PFI Coordinator
The PFI team has put all its efforts to gather the necessary content for the construction of this catalog, and apologizes for any missing or wrong information that could figure in its pages. With all our love and appreciation to every person involved in the Palestinian cinema scene.

WEDDING IN GALILEE
Michel Khleifi, 1987 (Director’s fortnight ) Following the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, a Galilean Arab village ruled by an Israeli military governor is under a strict curfew, despite which the village mayor wants to celebrate his son’s wedding with the traditional elaborate ceremony. The Israeli governor refuses at first, but finally allows the wedding to take place – on the condition that he and his staff are invited.
CANTICLE OF THE STONES
Michel Khleifi, 1990 (Un certain regard ) Two Palestinian lovers, separated during the 1960s when he is imprisoned for resisting the Israeli occupation and she sorrowfully emigrates to the United States, are reunited in Jerusalem some 18 years later. He works for an agricultural aid organization; she is a scholar researching the meaning of sacrifice in Palestinian society. Around them rages the turmoil of the First Intifada.
CURFEW
Rashid Masharawi, 1994 (Critics week) This drama portrays a day in the life of a Palestinian family during a curfew announced by the Israeli army in a Palestinian refugee camp on the Gaza Strip in 1993. While the curfew is in effect, they must live behind closed doors, barred from their daily lives and needs.

THE TALE OF THE 3 JEWELS
Michel Khleifi, 1996 (Director’s fortnight ) A frontline portrait of Palestinian life on the Gaza Strip during the period between the Hebron events and the withdrawal and new peace initiatives, told from the viewpoint of a -12year-old boy who becomes involved with a “gypsy” girl. Raids by Israeli special forces are powerfully filmed and cleanly integrated into the narrative – as unexceptional to the boy as the activities of the young Palestinian fighters. Writer, director, and producer Michel Khleifi adds an elevating metaphysical/ religious dimension that embraces elements of orthodox Middle Eastern mysticism, the boy’s dream-based intuition, and the girl’s nature-oriented worldview.
HAIFA
Rashid Masharawi, 1996 (Un certain regard) Haifa, nicknamed after the city of his love and hope, comes and goes in a Palestinian refugee camp. Although he is everybody’s fool, there are many things only he knows. He is closely related to the family of Abu Said, a former policeman who finds new hope with the political developments. Oum Said, his wife, hangs her hope on the imminent release from prison of their eldest son, Said. She tries to find him a bride to secure his future. Their youngest son, Siad, is cynical and rebellious. He refuses to believe in anything. Sabah, their -12yearold daughter, sees the future through the eyes of a romantic, searching for what it might hold in store for her.
CYBER PALESTINE
Elia Suleiman, 2001 (Director’s fortnight) Cyber Palestine is a parable about a modern-day Mary and Joseph, two Palestinian returnees living in Gaza, and their trials and tribulations with the Israeli occupation.

RANA’S WEDDING
Hany Abu-Assad, 2002 (Critics’ Week) Rana’s father is going to the airport at 4 p.m., and she can either get married, or leave the country with him. He supplies her with a list of eligible bachelors who have asked for her hand in marriage. But she is in love with Khalil. Can she find him, ask him to marry her, find a registrar, get her hair done, gather the relatives, and get married – all before four o’clock?
DIVINE INTERVENTION
Elia Suleiman, 2002 (Official Competition, Jury Award winner) A black comedy that consists largely of a series of brief interconnected sketches, but for the most part records a day in the life of a Palestinian living in Nazareth whose girlfriend lives several checkpoints away in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
LIKE TWENTY IMPOSSIBLES Annemarie Jacir, 2003 (Cinéfondation)
Occupied Palestine: A serene landscape now pockmarked by military checkpoints. When a Palestinian film crew sidesteps a closed checkpoint by taking a remote side road, the political landscape unravels, and the passengers are slowly taken apart by the mundane brutality of military occupation. Both a visual poem and a narrative, Like Twenty Impossibles wryly questions artistic responsibility and the politics of filmmaking, while speaking to the fragmentation of a people.

ATASH
Tawfik Abu Wael, 2004 (Critic’s week) A family lives in the middle of nowhere, not far from the village. Father and son sell the charcoal the family produces to the village; mother and daughters never leave. While Abu Shukri is building a water pipe and spends his time to protect it from a mysterious danger, his family is generating thirst for water, for food, for freedom, for sex, for eroticism, for love, for desire… Thirst for life.
SALT OF THIS SEA
Annemarie Jacir, 2008 (Un certain regard) The film stars Palestinian-American poet Suheir Hammad as Soraya, an American-born Palestinian woman, who heads to Israel and Palestine on a quest to reclaim her family’s home and money that was taken during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
THE TIME THAT REMAINS
Elia Suleiman, 2009 (Official Competition) A semi-biographical drama film written and directed by, and starring Palestinian director Elia Suleiman. The film also features Ali Suliman, Saleh Bakri, and Samar Qudha Tanus, and is an account of the Israeli state from its creation in 1948 to the present.

FIX ME
Raed Andoni, 2010 (Acid selection) Featuring a colourful array of characters, including members of the director’s own family, Raed Andoni’s film explores the individual memories of Palestinians, whose life experiences have been shaped by military occupation, oppression of the people and continuous erosion of citizens’ rights. In a place so dominated by collective consciousness and identity, finding individuality becomes the focus of this fascinating – and moving – study.
OMAR
Hany Abu Assad, 2013 (un certain regard, Special award) A young Palestinian freedom fighter agrees to work as an informant after he is tricked into an admission of guilt by association in the wake of the killing of an Israeli soldier.
CONDOM LEAD
Mohammed and Ahmad Abunasser, 2013 (Official selection short films) As an echo to the violent military operation called “Cast Lead”, the film shows the difficulty of making love in wartime.

DEGRADE
Mohammed and Ahmd Abunasser, 2015 (Critics week) In Gaza, two hairdressers and 10 customers of various ages and backgrounds spend the day trapped in a beauty salon while Hamas police fight a gang in the street.
AVE MARIA
Basil Khalil, 2015 (Official selection short films) The silent routine of five nuns living in the West Bank wilderness is disrupted when an Israeli settler family breaks down outside a convent just as the Sabbath comes into effect.
A DROWNING MAN
Mehdi Fleifel, 2017 (Official selection short films) Alone and far from home, The Kid makes his way through a strange city looking for the means to get through his day. Surrounded by predators, he is forced to make compromises merely to survive, and his life of exile grows one day longer.

Aanat Films Founded in Ramallah in 2010, and operating from occupied East Jerusalem, Aanat Films is an independent Palestinian film production company that has set the grounds for the development and production of edgy independent Palestinian films. The huge success of Ihab Jadallah’s award-winning debut, The Shooter (2007), which was presented at over 30 festivals around the world, has demonstrated that an alternative workflow and production process can work for talented Palestinian filmmakers, given the obvious lack of resources. It is this innovative workflow, together with the limitation in access to resources, talent, equipment, structure, and process that gave birth to Aanat Film. Contact Ihab Jadallah ihabjad@gmail.com https://aanatfilm.com/new/ Jerusalem Boujabel Production Boujabel Production was established by Salim Abu Jabal in Ramallah in 2011, with the aim of providing production and casting services for his films as well as for other filmmakers. The company organised and produced Film Behind the Wall, a travelling film festival in Palestine. Abu Jabal started working in the cinema field in 2004, and has directed and produced several international documentary and fiction films. He acted as casting manager for films including Najwa Najar’s Eyes of the Thief (2014) and Pomegranates and Myrrh (2008), and Michel Khliefi’s Zindeeq (2009). He has also directed and produced numerous television programmes as well as his own documentaries: Separation Diary (2012) and The Language of Almonds (2011). 5-10 DECEMBER
IT ALL STARTED WITH A FOOTBALL GAME. In 2007, a football team from Bristol visited the West Bank and played the beautiful game with Palestinians living there. They shared many things, including stories, laughter and common understanding. Following this experience one of the players, David Owen was inspired to create a platform that would bring real stories from Palestine to the West of England: the Bristol Palestine Film Festival was born. And it grows stronger every year.

Today, Quds Art is a collective of artists working in a variety of disciplines from Europe and the Middle East. Our goal is to bring together artists from different backgrounds in a more permanent way. We try to transcend boundaries and see beyond walls. We provide our reflections and technologies to what we want to narrate: stories of and from people and places. Quds Art Films is the organisation’s filmmaking branch, which came together when Ramzi Maqdisi, Aurelien Lambert, Juan Meseguer, Seyed Hosseini, and Iyas Jubeh found themselves in the same place sharing similar goals. Palestine Pavilion Media Partners Romman (http://rommanmag.com) is a Palestinian cultural online magazine; an independent, modern, and young magazine edited by Saleem Albeik. It is primarily devoted to arts and literature, be it in the form of creative texts, critique, or commentary, and to politics as a fundamental part of the cultural scene in the Arab Orient in specific, where the Palestinian question is directly affected and effective. The magazine aims to provide a broad platform for expressing opinions; it does not only provide cultural coverage to its readers, a neutral introduction to Palestinian, Arab, and international cultural production; it also focuses on producing its own opinions. What the magazine represents, or what it tries to embrace, are the Palestinians of Syria, Lebanon, and of all refugee camps and the diaspora, and the Palestinians who live inside Palestine, the entirety of historic Palestine. It tries to be their dispersed voice, or one of their voices.
Hamza Abu Ayyash A Palestinian activist artist born in Lebanon. He lived his early life between Tunisia and Jordan and settled in Palestine in 1997, few year after the Oslo agreement, where he graduated from the faculty of Fine Arts in Nablus in 2004. As a multimedia artist, Hamza is using a variety of art forms such as graphic design, painting, sculpturing, video, photography, projections and graffiti in order to express his topics that orbit around the regional identities and mythical heritage of the areas he is working at. His artworks mostly include calligraphy in adjusted forms as expressive force. http://7mz.me
