Hello and welcome to our Mother’s Day edition. Being a mum is such an important job and now that I have my own kids I can really appreciate what my own mum did for me as a single mum of four kids. We may have gone without many things but she gave us what mattered most. To celebrate the good work that mums do for families and the community we’re giving away lots of prizes this month. See inside for more details. My own boys are testing my mothering skills at the moment. Everytime I ask Jordan to do something his “tummy’s too sore mummy” and Sean just mimics him of course. On the upside, Sean just accidentally caught his first fish recently!
ROCKING kids parties... without the stress & mess!
Hope to see you for some FREE rollerskating at Cairns Rec on Mother’s Day. Enjoy this edition, and remember to tell everyone you read it in PakMag.

Reading
Benefits by Wendy Manners
While many parents are already busy with running the family household it has been proven time and again that making the time to read with your children has wide ranging benefits.
R
ecent research quantified what we’ve intuitively always known about children and reading. That is, the more adults read to children from an early age, the greater the impact on their reading and thinking skills. It was reported in The Age (3 March 2013) that a longitudinal study by The Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research measured the link between the frequency of reading to a child and his or her development. The study followed 4,000 children, aged four to five years in 2004 through to ages 10 and 11 and found that reading to a child six to seven days a week puts him almost a year ahead of a child who has not been read to. The study also found that children who were read to every day from a young age also have better numeracy skills in primary school. The benefits don’t stop at reading to pre-school aged children. The study found that kids who are read to more often keep doing better as they age than other children. The findings send a clear message to parents, and other carers such as grandparents – reading to children goes beyond a simple fun, bonding experience. It is perhaps the single most important activity you can do to give a child a head start in literacy. As a former primary teacher and literacy consultant I’ve seen the benefits first hand of children who come from language and reading
12

rich environments. Anecdotally, these children are streets ahead of those who come from language and reading deficient environments. So what can you do at home to help your child? • Stock up on your children’s book library at home (ask for books as gifts and look in the sales and op shops for bargain books). • Make your local library a fun place to visit. • Establish a comfortable reading spot so that your kids associate that place with reading and books. • Establish a regular routine for reading together eg. before bedtime • If you’ve got wriggly boys who don’t sit still, keep the reading time short and make sure the books are of interest to boys. The grubbier and gorier the content the better, usually! • Make reading time interesting and fun rather than laborious and boring. That way your kids will always look forward to their reading time with you. • Make sure your kids take plenty of books on visits and sleepovers with grandparents, and other relatives. Let them know how important daily reading is with your children. Wendy Manners is the Principal of Holy Cross School, Trinity Park www.pakmag.com.au

Offset Accounts
The latest news and tips in the world of women, families and finance
Financial Perspective
by Fiona Thorogood
Creating a financial plan is something that everyone should do and its made a lot easier if you understand what your own personal values and priorities are with regards to money.
Did you know that if you have a 100% mortgage offset account and use it effectively you could save thousands over the life of your home loan?
Financial priorities
Here are some simple tips for making
What would you consider to be your biggest financial priorities? Start by writing a list of your biggest priorities followed by a second list of those that are slightly less important. There are no right or wrong answers since everyone is different but this information will help shape your investment choices. The $10,000 question If you were suddenly given $10,000, what would you do with it? This question can be very revealing and is one of the best ways to work out what your attitude to money is. Would you spend it straight away, put it in a savings account or do a bit of both? Putting goals in place Once you have an understanding of your attitudes towards money, you can start to think about what goals you will establish
to keep your financial plan on track. Think carefully about whether your main priorities are in the short or long-term, as this will partly decide where your investments are going to perform best.
• Have a good budget and stick to it. If you don’t

pay off your loan even sooner.
The final step is making the effort to meet your objectives - regular meetings with a financial advisor will help ensure you are staying on track. Reassessing your financial values occasionally is also important, as they could change over time, especially if you go through a major life event such as moving house, getting married or having children.
• Ensure you have allocated sufficient income to

spend more than you earn, your savings will grow in your offset account. This may also allow you to
cover your budgeted expenses. • Deposit all of your income into your mortgage offset account and use a credit card with an interest free period to pay for all your day-to-day expenses. By parking your income in your offset account and using your credit card effectively you can reduce your outstanding loan balance for longer each month and reduce the amount of interest you pay on your home loan. news HEARING Problems?
School Sores By Dr Julia Driscoll
It has been discovered that some children who appear to have normal hearing may struggle in the classroom because they have difficulty switching their listening attention. This means they find it difficult to follow a conversation from one talker to the next. The study by the University of Sydney looked at people with persistent listening difficulties in noisy environments, but no diagnosis of a hearing disorder or attentional disorder (such as ADHD). Associate Professor Simon Carlile said the researchers were determined to find out why some children, with otherwise normal hearing, fell behind in the classroom.
he said. “In our study, we showed that these children were markedly slower to switch their attention compared to their agematched peers. In a noisy conversation with many participants, this means that these children were having trouble following a conversation as it moved from one talker to the next, making it difficult for them to get the gist of what was being said.
“A wide battery of clinical tests indicated that children who complained of listening difficulties had otherwise normal hearing sensitivity and auditory processing skills,”
Associate Professor Carlile said the group are now developing a test that can be easily used by audiologists and GPs in their consulting rooms.

School sores, or impetigo, are bacterial skin infections. Usually a staphylococcal A, or sometimes a streptococcal B, they commonly are weepy sores or a burn-like lesion. They often have a yellow crust and they can grow rapidly. They especially occur when the skin is broken, for example an insect bite or a grazed knee. These bacteria on our skin are in low numbers but they are very contagious and can divide and multiply very quickly in our tropical climate. The germs can be spread easily from touching the hands of someone who has scratched an infected sore that can be itchy. So it is important to cover the sores and keep your child home from school, kindy or daycare until you visit the doctor. Antibiotics in the form of an ointment or medicine are generally prescribed and then they can resume school if the sore is covered. Sometimes it can be advantageous to bathe with an antiseptic soap. Ensure that the affected child has their own towel and washer. Make sure your child takes all of the prescribed antibiotics because we don’t want to breed antibiotic resistant bugs. We run that risk unless we kill all of the bacteria causing the infection. Dr Julia Driscoll is a GP at Apple Tree Medical Centre in Smithfield. She is also the author of “My Story”, an interactive children’s book to reduce sibling rivalry. For more information go to www.juliaschildrensbooks.com www.pakmag.com.au

relationship has been very loving and respectful. However, I have seen friends whose teenage children yell and swear at them and their family life seems to be a battle zone. I’m worried that this could happen in my family. Do you have any ‘tips’ to help me to maintain a good relationship with my daughters during their teen years? I can understand your concern. While some degree of family conflict is a natural and normal part of family life, the level of conflict can escalate as your children go through puberty and make the physical, social and emotional transition from childhood to adulthood. Often teenagers do say they ‘hate’ their parents when in fact what they ‘hate’ is the fact that parents have

I picked up my razor (which, let’s face it, doesn’t see much action when you’re pregnant) and carefully and skillfully started shaving off my eyebrows. One at a time, the hair came off and I looked at myself in the mirror admiring the fact that I now had not one hair between my eyelashes and the top of my forehead. And then...I woke up. In a panic, I instinctively felt my face to make sure my eyebrows were still in their rightful place.
Oops, now where did I leave my brain?

Baby brain has been a handy excuse for pregnant women for years, but new research suggests it’s all in our head, writes Shannon du Plessis
Welcome to the world of the pregnant woman... where dreams seem real and putting the milk in the pantry is a regular occurrence. “Baby brain” has been well documented and one of the common symptoms listed in the classic What to Expect When You’re Expecting guide by Heidi E. Murkoff.
birth and caring for a new baby. You might be worried about labour, family dynamics (if you have other young children to care for), family finances, the baby’s health, and how you will handle motherhood. Sleep will probably also become more erratic. So baby brain is perfectly normal and will probably last for several months after the baby is born due to sleep deprivation. However a team of researchers at the Australian National University said they had debunked the “baby brain” myth. Their 20-year study on health and ageing analysed the mental function of a group of women before and during pregnancy and in the early stages of motherhood. The women were given memory and cognitive speed tests three times over eight years, but

Sleep plays an enormously important role in the mental and physical development of children as well as for their immune system.
Speaking is living Toddlers who stutter are likely to be the targets of bullying and teasing at preschool and kindergarten according to stuttering expert Professor Mark Onslow, Director of the Australian Stuttering Research Centre (ASRC) at the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Health Science. Stuttering typically starts in two to three year old children and can hinder educational and occupational success also causing serious psychological problems later in life states Professor Onslow. Professor Onslow says school can be a terrible time for those who stutter and the general community, parents and

Wardrobe wake up

Janelle’s daughter commented that she thinks her mum would rather buy clothes for the kids than herself. Probably something that many mums suffer from!
Dress Up Time
Janelle’s Makeover Wardrobe
Gerlinda: “Janelle’s style would definitely be described as casual and her lifestyle means she rarely has an excuse to dress up. So we decided to inject a bit of style into her look by swapping faded denim for dark denim and adding a figure-flattering modern top. The addition of a few gold accessories transforms her look whilst being comfortable.”

Cleaning Share the
skills
for Life If you don’t want your kids to turn into ‘KIPPER’s’, young adults who overstay their welcome, then perhaps its time you started sharing the housework and teaching your kids how to clean?
A
ccording to the 2011 Census, women still do the majority of domestic chores in modern family households and, perhaps not surprisingly, teenagers are the least inclined to help out with the housework. Teenage girls did 28 minutes of housework per day compared to mum at 151 minutes, and boys (aged 15-19) barely managed a measly 19 minutes. While it would be easy to dismiss this as typical teenage laziness it seems as though parents are perhaps being their own worst enemies. A national Newspoll survey recently commissioned by leading cleaning brand VIVA® also discovered that 70 per cent of Mums find it easier to do the cleaning themselves rather than having to ask their teens to help out, resulting in a generation lacking in valuable life skills. Interestingly, 96 per cent of Mums believe that domestic skills, such as cleaning, are an important life skill for their children to learn but over two-thirds just find it easier to do it themselves rather than taking the time to teach their kids how to do it. Leading social demographer Bernard Salt, commenting on the results, said, “The bottom line is that parents think their kids should learn cleaning skills but they just can’t quite bring themselves to teach or enforce the share-thecleaning principle.”
42
www.pakmag.com.au
The survey also highlighted that 28 per cent of Mums also consider ‘not cleaningup after themselves’ to be a quality they
dislike most in others, which should provide further motivation for parents to ensure their teenagers develop this key life skill. Given that another finding of the Census was 27 per cent of 20-somethings still live with their parents, it seems this is an issue that isn’t going away anytime soon. More and more young adults are choosing to delay flying the nest and those most likely to stay at home, where they are looked after by their mums, are males. Stay-at-home 20-somethings have been tagged by demographers as KIPPERS or Kids in Parent’s Pockets Eroding Retirement Savings. Bernard Salt says “I suspect that some 50-something parents have created a culture of dependence in their young adults to keep them at home but this runs counter to the thinking and values of parents who believe that the learning of cleaning and other domestic skills is important.” It might be laziness or it might be that they’ve never been taught, but one thing’s for sure, in modern busy households where dad and mum both work, the housework should be everyone’s job. As Bernard Salt says, “The only way a modern household with multiple income earners and multiple teenagers and perhaps kippers can operate is if there is a fundamental shift in who does the domestic housework. Whereas once cleaning was entirely mum’s job it is now everyone’s job. This is a bold new concept: the household of the future will be more of a sharehouse experience rather than a place where one person does the lot!” www.pakmag.com.au

Mother’s Day Gifts Need inspiration for an impressive Mother’s Day surprise? Then why not put a handcrafted spin on the traditional gift and create your own jewellery.
Fabric Ne c k l a c e
What you need • Light to medium weight fabric, enough to cut a 110cm long x 10cm wide strip • 6 x 25cm wooden beads • Sewing thread • Hand sewing needle • Sewing machine • Scissors
44
www.pakmag.com.au
These instructions will create a short necklace measuring approximately 80cm in length before tying. To make a longer length necklace, simply cut a longer fabric strip. [1] Begin by making a fabric cylinder by cutting and measuring a fabric strip 110cm long and 10cm wide. Fold the fabric strip in half lengthways, with the printed side on the inside, and pin. Using a sewing machine, stitch the fabric together, down the length of the pinned side, leaving a 10cm seam allowance. Turn through so the printed side of the fabric is now facing out.
to secure it inside the fabric cylinder. Repeat this process until you have added half the beads into the fabric cylinder, then repeat this process by adding the other half of the beads into the other end of the fabric cylinder. Your finished necklace should be made up of six beads surrounded by seven knots. [4] Finish the two open ends by turning the raw edges inside the fabric cylinder and hand sew the gaps closed. All Mum needs now is a new outfit to match her new necklace!
Hints
[2] Before placing the first bead inside the fabric, identify the middle of your fabric cylinder and tie your first knot in the necklace.
HINT 1: Use smaller beads to make a coordinating bracelet.
[3] Into one end of your necklace, insert a bead. Beside the bead twist the fabric slightly so that the fabric bunches around the bead. Tie a knot, as close to the bead as you can
HINT 2: Buy 10cm of fabric and use the width of your chosen fabric as the length, as most commercially made fabric measure 112cm in width.

M NRL for

Whether its just for fun or with dreams of being the next Jonathan Thurston, Junior Rugby League is launching a new junior recruitment campaign to get more 5-12 year olds involved in the game.
any parents may have been steering their children away from what they perceive as contact sports in recent years but local mum Leisha Kennedy is a strong advocate of NRL as a family sport. She is the mother of ten children, eight of whom play for the Edmonton Storm Junior Rugby League Club, including two girls. Rugby League is currently aiming to drive its recruitment of junior players across the country and in 2012 recorded the highest number of registered participants in the 6-12 year old age group in the history of the game. Rugby League presently has 126,025 registered junior club players who play for one of the almost 8000 teams that make up the 1300 Junior Rugby League Clubs nationwide. According to Tony Quinn, NRL Regional Development Manager for North Queensland, Junior Rugby League clubs are the backbone of the game. “They are where our State Of Origin Stars begin their careers, where so many of the Maroons fans come from, and where our children can have heaps of fun and activity when training and playing the game”. Children can begin playing regular games of Rugby League from as young as five years of age
and junior teams typically range from Under 6s through to Under 18s. Junior Rugby League focuses on a whole-ofgame program so its newest members can enjoy the game itself instead of just practicing drills. From day one of joining a club children start playing Rugby League while developing skills such as try scoring, evasion, passing, and kicking. As with other team sports, local junior clubs are dependent on the parents and community members who volunteer their time and effort to keep the sport operating for children to enjoy. It is very much a family involvement. As the mother of a large family Leisha Kennedy believes Rugby League is a great way for her children to stay active but that it also plays a role in maintaining a family unity. “It has helped provide the kids and myself with a fun social activity where they are still learning teamwork, discipline and ball skills. No matter where we are we end up playing a game of backyard footy! We all just love Rugby League.” For more info on getting your boys and girls involved visit www.playrugbyleague.com sign up with a club and become part of the Rugby League community today. www.pakmag.com.au
