Welcome to the North Queensland Baby and Toddler Guide, proudly brought to you by PakMag. This is the essential guide for parents-to-be and new parents who live in North Queensland.

Having a baby is a very exciting time. It means putting someone else first. It means sharing your world with a little one who thinks you are the most important person in the whole wide world. The road to parenthood is different for everyone, but the good news is that there are plenty of great products and services to help you along the way.

So, what’s inside the guide?

This guide gives you a comprehensive look into everything you need to know to make your baby’s first years happy and healthy. It keeps you connected to your community and allows you to get out and about, meet other parents and get to know how family-friendly your local area is. We’ve researched all of the great things Cairns, Townsville, Mackay and surrounds have on offer. We cover all sorts of things like tips to keep your baby healthy, great walks to go on, activites to enrol your baby in, and lots, lots more.

We also have “Your Baby Checklist”. Navigate to the middle of this guide to find your all-important checklist for before and after baby is born. It helps you get organised and keep track of your baby’s significant milestones, and is great to have on hand for both yourself and for the professionals who require the developmental dates and details.

I truly hope this guide helps you on your parenting journey and that, despite the sleepless nights, parental guilt and constant worry, that you look after yourself and enjoy this special time. Cairns is home to a number of great classes run by Queensland Health, including the six-week Parenthood Program (for first time parents), the Refresher Program (for those who have already had a baby), the Young Parents Birth and Parenting Program (for parents under 20 years) and the Indigenous Childbirth Education Program. Start to think about all of the things that you need to do before your little one arrives. Head to page 31 - for our handy checklist.

The Cairns Private Hospital offer private antenatal classes too. Other private options include Childbirth Education Classes with local companies Birth Dance and Hypnobirthing Workshops with Zoe Strickland.

2. ATTEND BREASTFEEDING CLASSES The Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) holds classes every quarter for pregnant women and their partners to develop a support network and prepare for the changes coming into their lives. Google “Breastfeeding Class Cairns”.

6. CHECK OUT YOUR LOCAL EVENTS Make sure you get to Cairns’ best events for new parents and parents-to-be.

The PakMag Expo is held annually in June as well as the Cairns Pregnancy and Baby Expo, which is in March. You should also keep an eye on dates for the Welcoming Babies Ceremonies which occur at various times during the year.

Pre-registration is essential as places are limited so keep an eye on the Cairns Regional Council website for details.

7. SHOP MATERNITY WEAR

After the birth of your baby, you can get breastfeeding support from a lactation consultant available through the Cairns Hospital, Cairns Private Hospital or your chosen obstetrician-gynecologist (ObGyn). You can also seek support from the ABA.

3. CHOOSE YOUR BIRTH OPTION

In Cairns, you have four options when it comes to giving birth; public hospital (Cairns and Hinterland Hospital), the Cairns Birth Centre, private hospital (Cairns Private Hospital) or at home (in some cases).

THE PUBLIC ROUTE If you choose the public route, your first port of call is to see your general practitioner who will schedule your ultrasound scans and any other appointments you may need. Your GP can also refer you for midwifery led care through the public system, if you prefer this option and are accepted into the program. You will give birth in the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital or at the Cairns Birth Centre with this option (sometimes you may be able to choose to give birth at home, but this needs to be discussed with your GP or midwives).

THE PRIVATE ROUTE If you go down this route, you can choose to go direct to the Cairns Private Hospital (where the team will organise everything for your labour, pre and postnatal care) or you can visit your preferred ObGyn such as Dr Elizabeth Jackson or Dr Phoebe Hong.

With either option you will give birth in the Cairns Private Hospital (or home if you prefer – in some cases only), but with the latter, you will visit your chosen ObGyn’s practice for your pre and postnatal care.

DOULAS With either route, you can also choose to engage the services of a qualified doula.

A doula, also known as a labour coach, provides support for mothers before, during and after birth and can attend births at the private hospital, public hospital or at home. Zoe Strickland and Sprout Birthing are amongst the many doula options in Cairns.

4. THINK ABOUT YOUR HEALTH.

There are some great options for baby clothes and baby goods in Cairns including large chains (Target, Kmart, Best & Less, etc.) and small boutiques such as Tully and the Chief and Hello Miss Poppyseed (in Oceana Walk). If you’d like to shop online, head to ElleJ at www.ellej.com.au (Townsville based store) for some gorgeous options.

9. KNOW YOUR OPTIONS AFTER BUB IS BORN Up until now, you may have only been thinking about your pregnancy, but when baby is born, what do you do? Support is available in many forms in Cairns; Facebook groups can be a godsend (try ‘Parents of North Queensland – By PakMag’, ‘Cairns MAMA TRIBE’ and ‘Cairns Mums Meet Group’).

If you’ve had a Caesarean section, Cairns Hospital offers a Birth After Caesarean Section program in Cairns.

Knowing your helpline numbers can really help you when you’re struggling to adjust to this change in your life or you just need some advice. Check out our directory on page 65 and 66 for your handy guide to essential helplines.

There are a number of reasons why your infant might have a rash. It could be something common like heat rash.

Or it could be something serious, like meningococcal, which is considered a medical emergency.

Could your little one have tongue tie? This condition affects 4-11% of newborns and occurs when the thin membrane under baby’s tongue restricts the movement of the tongue. The most common sign that your baby could have tongue tie is problems breastfeeding. Here’s what to look for:

To determine if your baby’s rash does require immediate medical treatment, try the glass test: 1. Press the side of a clear glass firmly against baby’s skin.

2. Check to see if the spot/rash fades from this pressure.

3. If your baby has a fever and the spots/rash are not fading under pressure, then seek medical help immediately.

Seeing your baby’s temperature spike is scary to say the least. Should you treat the fever at home or seek medical help?

For between one to three weeks after bringing baby home, you may notice your little one has a stump where the umbilical cord was attached. This area is going to be a little tender and delicate until the stump falls off.

If your baby is under three months old and has a temperature of 38°C or above, contact your doctor straight away.

If your baby is over three months old and has a temperature of 38°C or above, contact your doctor if: • The fever has persisted for 24 hours • Bub is not taking fluids • Bub is generally acting unwell

1. Keep the stump clean and dry.

2. Fold baby’s nappy down so it doesn’t touch the stump.

3. Gently sponge around the area when bathing bub .

4. Don’t try to pull the stump off.

5. Avoid using medical alcohol or other cleaning solutions to clean the stump unless it gets infected. Try warm salt water first.

If your baby is over six months, contact your doctor if:

Safe Swaddling Hints and Tips Swaddling is an excellent way to provide baby with a safe and secure sleep. It mimics the womb and controls the startle reflex, which often will wake baby up.

However there are a few important things to consider before swaddling your infant: • To swaddle correctly, wrap arms snug, straight at the side, but let the hips be loose and flexed.

• Don’t swaddle when awake. Babies only need to be swaddled during fussy periods and sleep.

• Use a specially designed swaddle blanket. These come with full instructions and fasteners to keep baby secure and safe.

During those first few weeks your newborn will probably go through 8 to 12 nappies a day. Some will be dirty, others just wet. It’s important to change bub often (after every feed or poop) even during the nights. This keeps baby’s skin clean and bacteria-free.

The best way to know which brand is right for your baby? Test them out.

Your Baby Poop Colour Code Guide Baby poop is a strange thing. It can vary depending on your feeding choice and bub’s development. The first poo, known as meconium will be thick, brown and tar-like.

• A spare change of clothes (or two)

• Nappy cream

Breastfed babies will generally have yellow or yellow-green soft, seedy poop.

6. Have plenty of water handy.

1. Accept that breastfeeding is hard for many new mums.

Breastfeeding can make you incredibly thirsty. And hungry! Have a water bottle close by (and some bickies too). And drinks lots of water, or even tea that helps produce more milk (ask the health food shop or your pharmacy).

Yes, breastfeeding is natural but it doesn’t come naturally. Breastfeeding is a learned skill for both you and your baby and one that can take plenty of practice and guidance.

Even if your first baby was easy to feed, your next may not. Ask for assistance during the first few feeds to make sure you’re getting the hang of it.

2. Focus on the latch If baby isn’t latching correctly it can lead to pain and frustration. Check that baby is fully attached to the breast, not just the nipple. You want babie’s lips to be like big fishy lips on the breast, not tucked under.

You’ll need a breast pump, bottles and possibly a breastfeeding pillow. But you may also need nipple cream, a nipple shield, breast pads (buy bulk) and cabbage leaves, which are great for soothing engorged breasts and helping with mastitis.

8. Prepare for excess milk After a feed it’s normal for baby to vomit. It can be a little alarming but this is completely normal. Have a towel handy for excess spills.

For many new mums, the football hold is the most comfortable but this isn’t always the case. Try different positions to find one that feels most natural.

9. Plan for the let down

If baby happens to only want one breast per feed, you can keep track of which breast is up next with a hair tie. Simply place the hair tie on the wrist of the same side that baby last fed on so you don’t get lopsided boobs.

5. Prepare to become a full-time milk machine Most new mums will spend the majority of those first days feeding bub (or expressing your engorged breasts). It can be time-consuming but it will get easier and you and baby will find your feeding grove soon.

SIDE POSITION Although sleeping baby on the back is the only safe position for sleeping, it is hard to calm a fussy baby in this position. Placing baby on the side can help ease the fussiness, allowing you to move your infant to the back-sleeping position after calming down.

SHUSH This S refers to the sounds that baby needs to sleep. Infants are used to the shushing sounds of your heartbeat and thus you might find baby has trouble

TRAVELLING WITH A BABY TRAVELLING WITH A BABY MAY SEEM LIKE A DAUNTING EXPERIENCE. Making travel arrangements, deciding what to pack, and planning the everyday logistics can fill new parents with dread. Whether you’re travelling by car, train, or plane, the change to a baby’s routine can cause distress to both baby and to you. But it’s a great idea to start travelling with your baby from an early age and they will be travelling superstars in no time.

There are things you can do to make your life easier, and your holiday the relaxing or adventurous time it is meant to be. Here are some helpful tips:

1. NECESSARY PREPARATIONS

It’s important to consider some extra things when booking flights. Are there any regulations on bringing fluids and foods through airport security? Will you need to book an extra seat or bassinet for your baby? Are you allowed to take a pram onto the plane? Can you fly with two extra items like a portacot and car seat? Airlines often have different regulations, so it’s a good idea to double-check before booking anything. Also take a sippy cup, or something for your child to suck on like a lollypop if they are older for take off and landing. Pack some activities as not all planes have TV screens. Gift wrap some tiny objects for them to open on the flight which makes it more exciting.

Babies are messy! Baby puke happens, nappy leaks happen. When travelling it’s a good idea to always have easily accessible clothes for both bub and yourself; sitting on a long-haul flight covered in vomit really is no fun! If your baby is eating solids too, then be sure to carry bibs and wipes with you at all times.

2. HOME AWAY FROM HOME When booking accommodation, you need to be mindful of a few things. Look for accomodation that has a door to the bedroom, otherwise nap time means everyone has to have a nap. Check out the facilities on offer at the hotel before booking. Do they have highchairs and portacots with linen supplied? Is there a microwave, fridge, and kettle in the room? Is there a bathtub in the room? Is the room on a quiet floor?

Do they have a laundry you can use? Nothing is worse than turning up for a holiday and what is meant to be supplied, can’t be supplied. So call to ensure it’s all sorted a couple of days before you depart. Also have a hire company on hand just in case for extras like pram hire incase yours goes missing or gets broken during transit. If travelling overseas, or interstate, ensure you pack things that you may not be able to purchase like favourite pre-packaged foods and snacks, formulas and medications.

If travelling by air, try and put these in your carry on, because if your luggage goes missing, this certainly can add a lot of stress to the situation..

6. HAVE YOU CONSIDERED THE ‘TRAVEL NANNA’ OPTION? One out of two Australians are paying their parents or parents-in-law to come with them on holiday with the main purpose of keeping a watchful eye on the kids.

Approximately 59 per cent of parents with kids under four years of age would prefer to take grandparents on holiday with them to watch their child rather than pay a babysitter.

After all, children are generally more comfortable having a carer who is familiar to them rather than a hired babysitter they’ve never met before. It also gives parents peace of mind while they’re travelling knowing their children are under the care of somebody they trust. This is also excellent bonding time for the child and the grandparent.

Enjoy your baby travel adventures, and don’t let the worry of travelling with a baby stop you from enjoying a break away from reality. Travel with a baby is just like being at home, but a little less comfortable… The memories you make will be well worth it, or you’ll have funny stories to reminisce in the future.

3. TAKE BREAKS If you’re travelling by car, while it’s recommended for all drivers to take frequent breaks regardless, with a baby on board, it’s recommended that you take a break every two hours for nappy changes and feeds. Make sure you factor this time into your plans.

4. SLEEP TIGHT Some babies have difficulties falling asleep in an unfamiliar cot. To help them adjust to their home away from home, bring something familiar from home. The aim here is to make their sleeping space feel as cosy and homely as can be, which typically helps them settle and doze off. Still having troubles? Taking your baby for a stroll or a car ride can help lull them off to sleep.

A GUIDE TO CHILDCARE, KINDY, AND SCHOOL The early years are without a doubt the most important when it comes to a child’s development, which is why deciding on your child’s early education is one of the most important choices you’ll make for them. It’s never too early to start thinking about childcare, kindy, and school options. In fact, being prepared will give you peace of mind that you will be giving your child the best start to life.

In the first years of life, your children will learn valuable skills that they will carry with them into adulthood and their career of choice. Being taught the skills they need in a friendly, stimulating, and nurturing learning environment can make a world of difference. However, with so many options out there, making the decision can seem overwhelming.

Many childcare centres, kindergartens, and schools hold open days to allow parents and their kids to come along and get a feel for the place, look around, and ask questions. Many offer tours on request, too. Seeing the centre or school in action can give you a great indication of whether or not you believe the location and atmosphere is right for your child.

CHILDCARE OR KINDY? When it comes to sending your little ones to care, it’s important to choose the right option for you. Childcare centres are usually open for at least 10 hours per day each week day, and often cater for children right from birth. Many have their own fee structure, but offer a variety of services including part time, full time, overnight, and holiday childcare services. Many of these centres run a Government-approved Kindergarten program too.

Unlike a childcare centre, Kindergartens are for children who are at least 4 years of age by 30 June in the year they participate. A Kindergarten program is put in place to help prepare kids for school in the year prior to enrolment into Prep.

These programs usually run for 6 hours per day and 5 days per fortnight during school terms (2 days one week, 3 days the next).

CATHOLIC Catholic education is faith-based and community-minded, and an integral part of the Catholic Church. These schools receive partial government funding, meaning their fees are lower than those of private schools. Many parents believe that like private schools, Catholic schools have more to offer to their children in terms of facilities, opportunities, and even boarding. A child does not need to have Catholic faith in order to enrol at a Catholic school but will be required to participate in Catholic school activities including mass and prayer.

WHEN SHOULD WE START THINKING ABOUT SCHOOL? Realistically, it’s never too early to start researching your child’s education. Even if your child is still a toddler, you can call around different schools to enquire about their enrolment process. Some schools accept applications years in advance, and if they don’t, it doesn’t hurt to put your child on the school’s waiting list to increase your chances of securing a spot.

When thinking about your child’s education, ask yourself what you value the most in a learning environment. Do you want a school that offers a range of facilities, perhaps including a swimming pool or boarding facilities? Are you looking for a large and diverse school, or a smaller and more private school? Would you like your child to attend a school where religious education is a must? Asking yourself these questions will help you narrow down the schools in your region, and therefore bringing you a step closer towards making a decision.

WHERE DO WE START?

While many Kindergartens are government-run and offer lower fees, a few are run by or affiliated with private or Catholic schools. Many of these organise excursions to the affiliated school where the children can get a feel for “big school” and explore prep classrooms. This makes the eventual transition into prep easier.

Public school – If you’re looking at a specific public school, it’s worth checking whether you reside in the school’s catchment area, as some schools will only accept students who reside within their district. You can find an interactive catchment area map at www.qgso.qld.gov.au/maps/edmap.

PUBLIC, PRIVATE, OR CATHOLIC?

From here, you can contact the school of interest or visit their website to enquire about the school’s enrolment process. Usually this involves filling out an application form, returning this to the school’s administration office, and attending an interview with the school’s principal or enrolment officer.

After kindy comes prep, which involves regular school hours five days a week.

Prep is for children who turn 5 years of age by 30 June in the year they enrol.

There are many, many schools to choose from, ranging from public, private, and Catholic schools. They each have their own benefits and downsides, but there’s no doubt each of them can offer incredible opportunities to your child.

PUBLIC Public schools are managed by the Australian Government education system and therefore offer lower tuition fees. Their enrolment process is usually fairly simple and straightforward, and many accept enrolments based on catchment areas (ie. if you reside in a school’s catchment area, they will generally accept you).

PRIVATE While private schools have higher tuition fees, they generally offer more excursions, smaller class sizes, and a larger variety of school facilities, including boarding for some schools. Admission into a private school generally isn’t as straightforward as entering a public school, with many requiring students to sit an exam or test prior to enrolment.

Private school – Many private schools are in high demand and have a lengthy waiting list in place. These lists generally operate on a “first come, first serve” basis, but your child is not always guaranteed enrolment by being on the school’s waiting list. Having said that, getting in earlier rather than later is always recommended.

Be prepared to pay a waiting list fee and for your child to possibly sit a test, if invited for an interview at the school.

Catholic school – If you’re interested in enrolling your child at a Catholic School, you should contact the school directly to enquire about their enrolment process.

Alternatively, contact your local Catholic Education office to enquire about Catholic schools in your area, as unlike public schools, they do not have catchment areas.

You may need to provide additional documentation during the enrolment process, including a certificate of Baptism or religious denomination. At some schools, children who are baptised Catholic are given priority of enrolment.

Encourage your child to be independent by going to the bathroom alone, dressing and undressing, and cleaning up toys.

• What is the process if my child is sick or becomes injured?

• Do I like the teachers?

• Is there Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) available?

INSTRUCTIONS Give your child simple instructions to follow to help prepare for instructions in the classroom. Some simple ones to try include “put your dishes in the sink”, “hang your jacket on the hook”, and “grab your shoes.”

Researching and eventually deciding on childcare, kindy, or school can seem like an overwhelming task for parents, but rest assured knowing your child will be in safe hands either way. TOP TIPS FOR DROP OFF Dropping off your child for the first day of daycare, Kindy, or school can be upsetting for both parent and child. Most daycares recommend two days per week to start with, most Kindys are a five-day fortnight, and of course school is five days per week. Here are some tips to help you manage the transition!

Have lots of discussions with your child in the lead up to the first day. Do some role play and practice the drop off time with your child prepare them. Visit the school in advance and see if they have orientation days or times, or whether you can drop in for a little while before the big day. When you drive past talk about “their school” and how exciting it is that they will be going there soon.

Don’t say to your child how much you will miss them, don’t show them any emotion besides confidence, happiness and positivity. And most of all, don’t linger. It’s best to establish a quick, efficient drop-off routine. If your child is crying, it may feel heartless to leave them, but your trained educator will distract them after you leave and it will be a lot less distressing for all involved if you make a quick exit.

MODEL TO THEM

Most children calm within moments of you leaving. Don’t feel bad, the educators are very used to dealing with this situation, you my dear parent are not. So relax and let them help you deal with it. If the child doesn’t settle after you leave, the educators will call you, don’t worry.

Show your child how you make friends, talk to the teachers, and other parents when you first arrive, help them unpack their bag, and take them to the play area. Set them up with an activity that you know they will enjoy.

LEAVE A COMFORT ITEM If the educator allows it, give your child a comfort item to have during moments of separation anxiety. Telling your child that they can keep it save until you get back to pick them up. This helps children trust and remember that you will always come back to get them.
